Nagoya, March 17, 2020 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) shipped the core of the last H-IIB Launch Vehicle (No. 9) from the Tobishima Plant of the Nagoya Aerospace Systems Works in Aichi Prefecture to the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture. All nine H-IIB Launch Vehicles have been shipped from the Tobishima Plant over the course of 11 years, tracing back to the first shipment in February 2009. Their outstanding quality has contributed significantly to the vehicles' 100% successful launch rate.

The H-IIB is Japan's primary large-scale launch vehicle. Based on the technology of the H-IIA, the H-IIB has offered significantly enhanced launch capacity enabled by increased engine propulsion and large-scale satellite fairings protecting the payload. The H-IIB Launch Vehicles have served to launch the H-II Transfer Vehicles "KOUNOTORI" (HTVs) the cargo transporter to the ISS. The ISS functions as an internationally operated, manned experimental space facility located some 400 kilometers above the Earth's surface. The Tobishima Plant has undertaken assembly, parts installation and functional testing of all H-IIB Launch Vehicles.

Going forward, MHI will continue to focus on maintaining the outstanding strength and quality of its space-related technologies while also pursuing ever-higher productivity, making further contributions to the aerospace industry through its H-IIA launch services and development of the H3 Launch Vehicle.

The duo practiced the robotic capture techniques they will use when they command the Canadarm2 robotic arm to grapple Japan's ninth H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-9) when it arrives on May 25 at 8:15 a.m.

The HTV-9 is delivering over four tons of food, fuel and supplies including new lithium-ion batteries to finish updating the station's power systems. Ранее в 2020 году уже состоялись три выхода по американской программе.
В материалах НАСА говорится, что в июне планируются четыре выхода для замены аккумуляторных батарей в системе электропитания американского сегмента МКС.
Шесть новых батарей должен доставить японский грузовой корабль HTV-9, запуск которого намечается на 20 мая.

Кроме того, в июне намечается еще один выход с целью подключения платформы Bartolomeo для коммерческих экспериментов и установки оборудования для связи в Ka-диапазоне на европейском модуле Columbus.
Для выходов по американской программе подготовлены астронавты НАСА Кристофер Кэссиди, который сейчас работает на МКС, и Роберт Бенкен, которому предстоит в конце мая прилететь на станцию на корабле Crew Dragon, а также российский космонавт Анатолий Иванишин.

The Expedition 63 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition63/index.html) crew continues prepare for its arrival and robotic capture on Memorial Day.

Commander Chris Cassidy (https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/christopher-j-cassidy) of NASA will be in the cupola (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/cupola.html) on May 25 to command the Canadarm2 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/mobile-servicing-system.html) robotic arm to reach out and grapple the Japanese resupply ship at 8:15 a.m. Roscosmos Flight Engineer Ivan Vagner (http://www.gctc.ru/main.php?id=164) is backing up Cassidy and will monitor the H-II Transfer Vehicle-9 (HTV-9) as it approaches the orbiting lab. The duo continued their HTV-9 mission training and practiced capture techniques on a computer during the afternoon.

NASA TV will be live broadcasting the HTV-9 launch and capture activities (https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-tv-to-air-launch-capture-of-cargo-ship-to-international-space-station). HTV-9 is delivering over four tons of crew supplies, station experiments and lithium-ion batteries. The new batteries will be installed during a spacewalk at a later date to continue upgrading station power systems.

A Japanese cargo spacecraft loaded with experiment hardware, supplies and spare parts is scheduled to launch from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan to the International Space Station (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/index.html) at 1:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday, May 20 (2:30 a.m. May 21 in Japan). The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) unpiloted H-II Transport Vehicle-9 (HTV-9) carries investigations testing a new livestreaming educational tool, microscope and telescope.

Here are details about some of the scientific investigations and facilities heading to the orbiting lab on HTV-9.

Coming to you live and interactive from space

A broadcasting studio is opening up in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), also known as Kibo (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/kibo.html). The JAXA-sponsored education-focused experiment known as THE SPACE FRONTIER STUDIO - KIBO (https://iss-kibo.studio/en/) enables new livestreaming capabilities on station. Terminals set up next to a window overlooking Earth in the JEM module are to be used for communication. The first round of demonstrations of the technology are set to occur this summer, testing out two-way livestreaming that allows people on the ground to communicate with the astronauts.

Looking back at Earth

Rather than looking out at the stars, this telescope points at our planet. The integrated Standard Imager for Microsatellites (iSIM (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/experiments/explorer/Investigation.html?#id=8028)), a very high-resolution optical binocular telescope developed by Spanish company SATLANTIS MICROSATS S.L., takes images of Earth at less than one meter of resolution. A combination of technologies including optics, mechanics, electronics and artificial intelligence algorithms achieves a high spatial resolution at significantly lower cost compared with traditional imaging systems of similar performance. This experiment demonstrates the technology and its functionality in the low-Earth orbit environment. The prototype is mounted to the JAXA External Facility platform on the space station, which provides sample environment and operational conditions for testing the device.

A clearer picture of biology in microgravity

The Confocal Space Microscope (Confocal Microscope (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/experiments/explorer/Facility.html?#id=7428)) is a JAXA facility launching on HTV-9 that enables fluorescence live imaging of biological samples aboard the station. Confocal microscopy eliminates out-of-focus light or glare in specimens whose thickness is greater than the immediate plane of focus. The microscope can produce data on the fundamental nature of cellular and tissue structure and functions in real-time. When combined with the heating chamber system, the microscope enables long term 3D observation of living cells. While biological experiments are the first area of concentration, the microscope could be used for chemical studies as well.

NASA will broadcast the launch of a Japanese cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station (https://www.nasa.gov/station) beginning at 1 p.m. EDT Wednesday, May 20, live on NASA Television and the agency's website (https://www.nasa.gov/live).

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are scheduled to launch the unpiloted  H-II Transport Vehicle-9 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/htv.html) (HTV-9) on a Japanese H-IIB rocket at 1:30 p.m. (2:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, Japan time) fr om the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan.

The spacecraft will arrive at the station Monday, May 25. Live coverage of rendezvous and grapple will begin at 6:45 a.m. Capture of HTV-9 is scheduled to occur around 8:15 a.m. HTV-9 will approach the station from below and slowly make its way toward the orbital outpost. Expedition 63 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition63/index.html) Commander Chris Cassidy (https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/christopher-j-cassidy) of NASA, with assistance from Russian Flight Engineer Ivan Vagner of Roscosmos, will operate the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm from the station's cupola (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/cupola.html) and grapple the 12-ton spacecraft.

Coverage of HTV-9's final installation will resume at 9:30 a.m., when flight controllers in mission control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will take over robotic arm operations and berth HTV-9 to the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module, wh ere it will remain for two months.

The cargo craft will carry more than four tons of supplies, water, spare parts and experiment hardware for the station crew, including six new lithium-ion batteries needed to complete an overall upd ate of the station's electrical system. The batteries and corresponding adapter plates will replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for two power channels on the station's far starboard truss segment (S6) through a series of spacewalks by the station's crew members planned for later this year. This is the final se t of new batteries to be launched to the station as part of an overall upgrade of its power system that began in January 2017.

This also will be the final flight of this class of resupply spacecraft, named "Kounotori" – the Japanese word for white stork. The cargo craft launched on its maiden mission to the orbiting laboratory in September 2009. JAXA is developing a new class of HTV vehicles that will provide a reusable pressurized cargo section and the ability to carry more cargo due to its lighter weight. The new HTV-X vehicles will dock automatically to the station's International Docking Adapters with the first flight scheduled in 2022.

For nearly 20 years, astronauts have continuously lived and worked on the space station, testing technologies, performing science and developing the skills needed to explore farther from Earth. Through NASA's Artemis program, the agency will send astronauts to the Moon by 2024 (https://www.nasa.gov/specials/moon2mars/), with eventual human exploration of Mars. Inspiring the next generation of explorers – the Artemis Generation – ensures America will continue to lead in space exploration and discovery.

Токио. 20 мая. ИНТЕРФАКС - Грузовой космический корабль HTV-9 в среду стартует к Международной космической станции (МКС), сообщает Японское агентство аэрокосмических исследований (JAXA).

Запуск автоматического космического корабля на орбиту с помощью ракеты-носителя H-IIB будет осуществлен в 20:30 мск с космодрома на острове Танэгасима, расположенного на юго-западе Японии.

Корабль доставит на станцию около 5,5 тонн груза, в том числе продовольствие, а также оборудование и материалы для проведения десятков научных исследований.

Стыковка японского грузового корабля с МКС запланирована на 25 мая. Она будет осуществлена с помощью захвата сблизившегося со станцией "грузовика" автоматической рукой-манипулятором Canadarm-2 и последующим подведением его к стыковочному узлу американского модуля МКС Harmony.

ЦитироватьГрузовой космический корабль HTV-9 в среду стартовал к Международной  космической станции (МКС), сообщило Японское агентство аэрокосмических  исследований (JAXA).
Запуск автоматического космического корабля на орбиту с помощью  ракеты-носителя H-IIB был осуществлен в 20:31 по московскому времени с  космодрома на острове Танэгасима на юго-западе Японии.


Корабль доставит на станцию около 5,5 тонн груза, в том числе  продовольствие, а также оборудование и материалы для проведения десятков  научных исследований.


Стыковка японского грузового корабля с МКС запланирована на 25 мая.  Она будет осуществлена с помощью захвата сблизившегося со станцией  "грузовика" автоматической рукой-манипулятором Canadarm-2 и последующего  его подведения к стыковочному узлу американского модуля МКС Harmony.

Japan's HTV-9 cargo craft moments after liftoff from the at the Tanegashima Space Center

Carrying four tons of supplies, water, spare parts and experiment hardware for the Expedition 63 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition63/index.html) rew aboard the International Space Station (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html), HTV-9 launched from Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan on Wednesday, May 20 at 1:31 p.m. EDT (2:31 a.m. Thursday, May 21, Japan time).

The cargo vehicle will arrive at the station Monday, May 25. Live coverage of rendezvous and grapple will begin at 6:45 a.m. and capture of HTV-9 is scheduled to occur around 8:15 a.m. and coverage of HTV-9's final installation will begin at 9:30 a.m.

HTV-9 will approach the station from below and slowly make its way toward the orbital outpost. Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA, with assistance from Russian Flight Engineer Ivan Vagner of Roscosmos, will operate the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm from the station's cupola and grapple the 12-ton spacecraft.

The cargo includes six new lithium-ion batteries needed to complete an overall upd ate of the station's electrical system. The batteries and corresponding adapter plates will replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for two power channels on the station's far starboard truss segment (S6) through a series of spacewalks by the station's crew members planned for later this year. This is the final se t of new batteries to be launched to the station as part of an overall upgrade of its power system that began in January 2017. (hereafter "ANAHD"), avatarin Inc. of the ANA Group (hereafter "avatarin"), and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (hereafter "JAXA") have announced a new project on the International Space Station(ISS) to release the world's first space avatar¹ (https://global.jaxa.jp/press/2020/05/20200520-1_e.html#anchor01) experience. 
 This project is a direct output of the "AVATAR X" program² (https://global.jaxa.jp/press/2020/05/20200520-1_e.html#anchor02) which was launched by ANAHD and JAXA in September of 2018 under the JAXA Space Innovation through Partnership and Co-creation initiative ("J-SPARC³ (https://global.jaxa.jp/press/2020/05/20200520-1_e.html#anchor03)").
 avatarin will deploy the space avatar inside the Japanese experiment module "Kibo" on the ISS which is orbiting the globe at an altitude of 400km and speed of 8km per second. In a world's first, the general public will be able to remotely operate this onboard system and view its real-time video stream from a public, non-JAXA facility in Tokyo.

 With the cooperation of JAXA, using the Kibo's paid utilization program⁴ (https://global.jaxa.jp/press/2020/05/20200520-1_e.html#anchor02), the space avatar will launch to the ISS aboard the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV9) "KOUNOTORI9" in May 2019 and be installed near a window on the Kibo module. Individuals operating the system from the ground will have the unique experience of viewing the Earth from aboard the ISS.
 Operation of the space avatar system will be made available at an event to be announced and held later this year in Tokyo. Detailed information and updates regarding this event will be made available on avatarin's website (https://avatarin.com/ (https://avatarin.com/)).
 JAXA will provide launch logistics, safety evaluations, and on-station support for this program. This is one of many programs aimed at making the Kibo module available for more commercial applications in the future. JAXA believes that robotic avatar technology will enable more space-based businesses and will continue to collaborate with avatarin, under the J-SPARC initiative, to make this a reality.

1. Avatar
A real-world robot controlled by a human that will enable the operator to see, hear, feel and interact freely in a remote environment in real-time. The intentions of the operator are transmitted to the remote Avatar and resulting sensations such as sight, sound and touch detected by the system are fed back to the operator.

2. AVATAR X program
AVATAR X is a program jointly launched in September 2018 by ANAHD and JAXA, in cooperation with 30 public and private partner organizations. The objective of the program is to explore the use of robotic avatar technology to catalyze new space-based businesses that will provide key services and an unprecedented new-level of human access to space.

Нынешний старт (https://tass.ru/kosmos/8524031) проходил в условиях, когда многие сотрудники агентства были переведены на удаленную работу из-за пандемии, и коммуникация между ними в процессе запуска осуществлялась в режиме видеоконференции. Перед запуском стартовая площадка была подсвечена синим цветом в знак поддержки медицинских специалистов, которые борются с инфекцией.


Аппарат отделился от ракеты-носителя на высоте 280 км и продолжил движение по заданной траектории. К МКС корабль приблизится 25 мая вечером по японскому времени, после чего его захватит роботизированный манипулятор для последующей стыковки. Обычно весь процесс занимает несколько часов. "Конотори-9" доставит на МКС около 6 тонн продуктов, оборудования и других полезных грузов, необходимых экипажу станции.

Первый запуск корабля "Конотори" был осуществлен в 2009 году. Аппарат имеет длину 10 м и диаметр 4,4 м. После доставки грузов на МКС грузовик забирает оттуда мусор, а на обратном пути к Земле сгорает в атмосфере. С 2011 года, когда прекратилась американская программа Space Shuttle, "Конотори" стал главным космическим кораблем, способным перевозить крупное оборудование.

Это последний запуск нынешней версии "Конотори". С 2021 года Япония будет использовать модернизированную версию грузовика с большей вместимостью.

Вашингтон. 25 мая. ИНТЕРФАКС - Японский грузовой космический корабль HTV-9 в понедельник должен будет совершить стыковку с Международной космической станцией (МКС), сообщает Национальное управление США по аэронавтике и исследованию космического пространства (NASA).

Корабль доставит на станцию около 4 тонн груза, в том числе продовольствие, а также оборудование и материалы для проведения десятков научных исследований.

Стыковка будет осуществлена с помощью захвата сблизившегося со станцией "грузовика" автоматической рукой-манипулятором Canadarm-2 и последующим подведением его к стыковочному узлу американского модуля МКС Harmony.

Five days after launching from Japan, the HTV cargo freighter is on final approach to the International Space Station.

Japan's ninth automated logistics vehicle is packed with 6.2 metric tons of supplies, and it's approaching the International Space Station for a laser-guided rendezvous, culminating with grapple of the HTV cargo craft by the station's robotic arm at 1215 GMT (8:15 a.m. EDT).

The H-2 Transfer Vehicle is in the last phase of its five-day pursuit of the space station following launch Wednesday from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan.

In the last few hours, the HTV arrived at an approach initiation point 5 kilometers, or about 3.1 miles, behind the space station, then headed to a rendezvous insertion point about 500 meters, or 1,640 feet, directly beneath the complex.

The flight plan called for the HTV to arrive there, then continue on to a hold point 250 meters (820 feet) under the space station, where the spaceship paused its approach.

The HTV then conducted a "yaw around" maneuver to position the ship for potential contingency abort modes, then resume its approach to the station after about an hour of stationkeeping.

Another hold point was built into the rendezvous plan at 30 meters (98 feet), where the HTV just arrived.

The HTV's slow, laser-guided rendezvous will continue on to a final pause point about 9 meters, or 30 feet, directly below the space station's Kibo laboratory module.

Astronaut Chris Cassidy, assisted by Russian flight engineer Ivan Vagner, will take control of the lab's Canadian-built robotic arm to capture the free-floating cargo ship at 1215 GMT (8:15 a.m. EDT), then the robot arm will maneuver the HTV to a berthing port on the station's Harmony module a couple of hours later.

After a five-day journey, the H-II Transport Vehicle-9 (HTV-9) was captured by Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA using the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm from the station's cupola to grapple the 12-ton spacecraft.

Coverage of HTV-9's final installation will begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT when flight controllers in mission control at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will take over robotic arm operations and berth HTV-9 to the Earth-facing port of the station's Harmony module, where it will remain for two months.

После разгрузки корабль будет заполнен отходами, отведен от МКС и по команде из центра управления полетом сойдет с орбиты.

Первый запуск корабля "Конотори" был осуществлен в 2009 году. Аппарат имеет длину 10 м и диаметр 4,4 м. С 2011 года, когда прекратилась американская программа Space Shuttle, "Конотори" стал главным космическим кораблем, способным перевозить крупное оборудование. Операция по присоединению 12-тонного грузовика к американскому сегменту станции - модулю Harmony была завершена в 10:46 по времени Восточного побережья США (17:46 по Москве), отметили в Центре управления полетами НАСА в Хьюстоне (штат Техас). Успешное присоединение подтверждено.

Ранее сблизившийся с МКС корабль в 8:13 по времени Восточного побережья США (15:13 по Москве) был захвачен с помощью 17-метровой руки-манипулятора Canadarm-2, которой управлял американский астронавт Крис Кэссиди. Последующая подводка корабля Cargo Dragon дистанционной рукой-манипулятором к станции и сам процесс пристыковки осуществлялись по командам с Центра управления полетами НАСА в Хьюстоне.

Корабль привез на МКС около 4 тонн груза, в том числе продовольствие, а также оборудование и материалы для проведения десятков научных исследований и шесть новых мощных литий-ионных аккумуляторов для продолжения модернизации системы энергообеспечения станции.

HII Transfer Vehicle (HTV)9 Cargo Operations:
Today, the crew began HTV9 cargo transfer operations by unloading cargo from the HTV corridor. The vehicle delivered four tons of supplies, parts, and experiment hardware.

HTV Rendezvous Hardware Tool Cleanup:
As part of closeout ops from HTV9 capture/berthing, the crew returned the Centerline Berthing Camera System (CBCS) and Vestibule Outfitting Kit (VOK) today to their appropriate stowage locations. The CBCS supports Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) mating alignment operations necessary to berth a vehicle to Node 2. The VOK is a toolkit the crew uses during berthing operations.

Columbus Zero-G Stowage Rack (ZSR) Transfer:
As the initial steps in the choreography sequence to transfer newly arrived racks from HTV9, the crew transferred the Zero-G Stowage Rack (ZSR) from Columbus to a temporary location in Node 1. Prior to the transfer, the crew prepared the rack by removing stowage from Columbus Overhead 2 (COL1O2) and then collapsing the ZSR. Stowage removed from the ZSR was placed into the empty COL1O2 Rack Bay. The ZSR will eventually be transferred into HTV9 for disposal.

The EP-8 was filled with old batteries during spacewalks in January. On Jan 21 it was stowed on the MBS POA (a storage point on the station truss).

On Jun 1 Canadarm-2 grabbed EP-8 and then handed it to the JRMS (the Kibo module's robot arm). Then it removed EP-9, with new batteries, from Kounotori-9 and stowed EP-9 on the MBS POA. Finally it took back EP-8 from the JRMS and inserted it in Kounotori-9.

The ISS crew will carry out spacewalks in June to install EP-9's new battereies on the S6 truss, replacing old batteries which will be EP-9's new cargo. Still unclear how they will get rid of EP-9 since there are no more HTVs to carry them off for safe disposal

Rack Transfer Preparations:
Two new payload racks, Express Rack-11B (ER11B) and the European Drawer Rack 2 (EDR2), were delivered on H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)9. Today, the crew staged the Columbus module in preparation for the transfer of the new racks from HTV9. Preparations included relocating cargo from the Columbus module, emptying out and deinstalling the European Transport Carrier (ETC) locker, and clearing out payload cargo from the Columbus Overhead 2 (COL1O2) rack. The two racks will be transferred from HTV9 tomorrow and the ETC will be transferred to HTV9 for disposal.

Today the crew transferred ExPRESS Rack-11B (ER11B) and the European Drawer Rack 2 (EDR2) from HTV9 to the ISS. Prior to the transfers, the crew moved the Light Ions Detector so the hardware was not in the translation path of the rack transfers in the Columbus module. The ER11B rack was relocated from HTV9A2 to COL1O2. Before the EDR2 rack could be relocated to its final location, the European Transport Carrier (ETC) rack was relocated from COL1D4 to HTV9A2. EDR2 was then relocated from HTVF2 to COL1D4.

HTV9 Rack Transfers:
After relocating payload racks out of HTV earlier this week, the crew performed stowage rack transfers. Prior to the first transfer, the crew staged the Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) by temporarily stowing items from the PMM in the Airlock. The crew transferred the Rack Resupply Stowage Rack (RSR) from PMM1P4 to HTV for disposal. The Zero-G Stowage Rack (ZSR) was then relocated from its temporary tie-down location of NOD1D2 to PMM1P4 to complete all rack transfers required prior to HTV9 departure. Finally, the crew completed the transfers by returning the temp stowed items from the Airlock to the PMM.

This is a video of a technical demonstration conducted during the approach of the International Space Station (ISS) supply vehicle HTV developed by Japan.

The objective of the demonstration was to test transmitting the video capturing the ISS from the camera fixed on the HTV9 to the crew inside the ISS for their situational awareness.

The result of this demonstration will be applied to the next generation transport vehicle HTV-X which is under development.

On May 25, 2020, videos taken by the camera installed on the H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI9" (HTV9) were successfully transferred to the ISS using wireless LAN (WLAN) in the vehicle's upward approaching phase for capture. This is the world's first successful image transmission using WLAN between two spacecraft in space.

The demonstrative experiment "Wireless LAN Demonstration" (WLD) comprises taking of videos of the ISS coming closer or departing with a camera installed in a spacecraft and transmission of these videos to the ISS on a real-time basis using WLAN so that onboard astronauts in the ISS can be aware of the spacecraft's current conditions. It is conducted with a view to achieving automatic docking in the future.

During the mission conducted on May 25, the WLAN communication with the ISS were established at around 600m beneath the ISS, earlier than initially planned (250m beneath), and the images taken with a camera installed on the HTV9 were uninterruptedly transmitted to the ISS in a stable manner for four hours.

When the HTV9 was positioned at 30m beneath the ISS, correct switching between the JAXA system on the tip of the robotic arm of the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" with which communication had been established and the NASA system was successfully performed as a demonstration test of switching of the WLAN access point on the ISS.

Thus, the targeted goal of the WLD mission has been attained: correct operation of the system required for the automatic docking experiment of the new ISS transfer vehicle "HTV-X2" has successfully been demonstrated.
A similar demonstrative experiment is planned for the HTV9 during its return journey from the ISS.

H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI" (HTV)

The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) also known as "KOUNOTORI" is an unmanned cargo transfer spacecraft developed and operated by JAXA for delivering supplies to the International Space Station (ISS). KOUNOTORI is capable of delivering up to six tons of cargo and has the world's largest transportation capacity. It also has the world's unique capability of carrying foods, clothes and large-sized extra- and intravehicular experimental devices including ISS batteries on one flight.

Eleven years after the launch of the first H-II Transfer cargo vehicle (HTV) to the International Space Station (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA's) HTV-9 will depart the orbital laboratory Tuesday, Aug. 18, with live coverage beginning at 1:15 p.m. EDT on NASA Television and the agency's website (https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive).

Expedition 63 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition63/index.html) Commander Chris Cassidy (https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/christopher-j-cassidy) of NASA will use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to release the spacecraft from the station at 1:35 p.m., ending its three-month stay. To prepare for release, flight controllers operating from NASA's Mission Control Center at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston will send commands to unbolt and detach the uncrewed cargo craft from the station's Harmony module and remotely operate Canadarm2 to move it into place for departure.

This will be the final station departure of JAXA's Kounotori, or "white stork," model cargo craft, nine of which have delivered more than 40 tons of supplies to space station crews. JAXA is developing a new fleet of HTV cargo craft, the HTV-X, which is targeted for its first launch in 2022.

The spacecraft, which launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on May 20, delivered about four tons of supplies and experiments to the orbital complex, including new lithium-ion batteries that were used to upgrade the station's power systems. The new-technology batteries were installed through a series of spacewalks along the far port truss "backbone" of the station.

HTV-9 will be commanded by JAXA flight controllers at its HTV control center in Tsukuba, Japan, to move away from the station and, on Aug. 20, to fire its deorbit engine in a burn that will send it back into Earth's atmosphere. Loaded with trash from the space station, the spacecraft will burn up harmlessly over the Pacific Ocean.

The crew closed the HTV hatch and configured the vestibule for unberthing by removing the Intramodular Ventilation (IMV) supply jumper and power/data jumpers. They installed the Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) Controller Panel Assemblies (CPAs) and partially installed a hatch thermal blanket. The crew also worked ahead of today's timeline and mounted the Pressure Management Device (PMD) and connected associated power and data cables. The PMD setup was originally scheduled on the timeline tomorrow. HTV9 is scheduled for unberth and release tomorrow.

The last of Japan's first series of HTV supply ships will leave the International Space Station on Tuesday with several tons of trash, old batteries, and unneeded equipment, heading for a destructive re-entry before the debut of an upgraded cargo freighter design.

The HTV cargo ship will be released from the space station's Canadian-built robotic arm at 12:35 p.m. EDT (1635 GMT) to wrap up an 85-day stay at the orbiting research outpost.

Astronauts closed the hatches between the HTV and the station's Harmony module Monday in preparation for the spacecraft's departure. Ground teams then planned to use the robotic arm to detach the HTV from its space station berthing port and maneuver it to a location roughly 30 feet, or 9 meters, below the complex.

Space station commander Chris Cassidy will send the command for the robotic arm to release the HTV Tuesday. Russian cosmonaut Ivan Vagner will assist Cassidy at a robotics work station in the space station's windowed cupola module.

The HTV will fire thrusters to depart the vicinity of the space station, then perform burns to re-enter the atmosphere around 3:07 a.m. EDT (0707 GMT) Thursday. Serving as a trash disposal vehicle, the spacecraft will burn up on re-entry targeted to occur over the South Pacific Ocean.

Japan's ninth HTV supply carrier arrived at the station May 25, five days after launch from the Tanegashima Space Center aboard a Japanese H-2B rocket. The HTV 9 mission delivered more than 13,600 pounds, or 6.2 metric tons, of cargo, supplies and experiments in its pressurized module and on its external payload bay, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The barrel-shaped H-2 Transfer Vehicle is nicknamed Kounotori, which is Japanese for "white stork," and stretches around 33 feet (10 meters) long and 14 feet (4.4 meters) wide.

The HTV 9 mission carried six new lithium-ion batteries to the station inside its unpressurized cargo compartment. NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Bob Behnken installed the upgraded batteries on the space station's solar power truss, completing a multi-year upgrade to the research lab's electrical system.

A cargo pallet loaded with eight obsolete nickel-hydrogen batteries was robotically installed into the HTV 9 spacecraft for disposal. Astronauts also placed a no-longer-needed resupply rack and a European stowage rack into the HTV ahead of its departure from the space station Tuesday.

The last set of disused nickel-hydrogen batteries will be jettisoned from the space station by its robotic arm later this year to naturally fall out of orbit due to aerodynamic drag.

The HTV 9 mission marks the final flight of Japan's current HTV spacecraft design, which first reached the space station in 2009. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is developing an upgraded cargo vehicle named the HTV-X, which is slated to fly to the space station for the first time in 2022.

Unlike the HTV, which is grappled by the robotic arm and berthed with the space station, Japan's HTV-X is designed to directly dock with the orbiting outpost, using the same docking ports as SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's Starliner crew capsules.

JAXA provides resupply services to the space station to help pay for Japan's share of the the research lab's operating costs. In addition to space station missions in low Earth orbit, Japanese officials say the HTV-X spacecraft could haul logistics to the future Gateway mini-space station near the moon.

Japan's H-2B launcher is also being retired with the final HTV flight. The HTV-X missions will launch on Japan's next-generation H3 rocket.

Other equipment delivered to the station in May by Japan's HTV 9 mission included a module to support a Japanese combustion experiment, a camera from a Spanish company that will be tested to gauge its usefulness on small satellites and CubeSats, new science racks for to the space station NASA and the European Space Agency, plus a water tank and fresh food for the research lab's crew.

Japan's HTV-9 resupply ship is on its own after being released from the Canadarm2 robotic arm completing a three-month cargo mission at the station.

Eleven years after the launch of the first H-II Transfer cargo vehicle (HTV) to the International Space Station (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA's) HTV-9 departed the orbital laboratory today at 1:36 p.m. EDT.

Earlier today, flight controllers operating from NASA's Mission Control Center at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston used the space station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to detach the cargo spacecraft from the station's Harmony module, then moved the spacecraft into its release position. Expedition 63 (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition63/index.html) Commander Chris Cassidy (https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/christopher-j-cassidy) of NASA used the Canadarm2 robotic arm to release the spacecraft from the station at 1:35 p.m., ending its three-month stay.

This was the final station departure of JAXA's first-generation Kounotori, or "white stork," cargo craft, nine of which have delivered more than 40 tons of supplies to space station crews.  JAXA is developing a new fleet of HTV cargo craft, the HTV-X, which is targeted for its first launch in 2022.

The spacecraft launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on May 20, arriving May 25 (https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacestation/2020/05/25/japans-resupply-ship-installed-on-stations-harmony-module/) to deliver about four tons of supplies and experiments (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/news/jaxa-htv-9-spacecraft-carries-science-technology-to-the-international-space-station-iss) to the orbital complex, including new lithium-ion batteries that were used to upgrade the station's power systems. The new-technology batteries were installed through a series of spacewalks along the far port truss "backbone" of the station.

HTV-9 will be commanded by JAXA flight controllers at its HTV control center in Tsukuba, Japan, to move away from the station and, on Aug. 20, to fire its deorbit engine in a burn that will send it back into Earth's atmosphere. Loaded with trash from the space station, the spacecraft will burn up harmlessly over the Pacific Ocean.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI9" (HTV9) successfully re-entered the atmosphere after the third de-orbit maneuver at 3:40 p.m. on August 20, 2020 (Japanese Standard Time, JST).

The "KOUNOTORI9" has successfully accomplished its main objective to ship cargo to the International Space Station (ISS).

The estimated date/time of "KOUNOTORI9" re-entry and splashdown are as follows (Japanese Standard Time, JST):

Estimated splashdown:		August 20, 2020 / 4:19 p.m. ~ 4:57 p.m.

Today, on August 20, 2020, the 9th H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI9" ("HTV9") left the orbit and reentered Earth's atmosphere as scheduled. Launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on May 21, 2020, "KOUNOTORI9" successfully docked to the International Space Station (ISS) and transferred onboard resupply items and utilization cargoes to it. Then, loaded with trash materials from the ISS, "KOUNOTORI9" departed from the ISS and completed Today's reentry into the atmosphere to finish its mission.

The nine "KOUNOTORI" transfer vehicles have been transporting not only Japanese cargo but also those of the ISS international partners since its first launch in 2009, and have played an important and indispensable role for operations and utilization of the ISS as the only spacecraft capable of transporting large-sized experiment racks to the ISS. In particular, we believe that we were able to make a significant contribution to the future stable operation of the ISS by continuously transporting the ISS's new batteries from "KOUNOTORI6" to "KOUNOTORI9" which replaced the old ones that had been used beyond their design life.

JAXA has acquired various new technologies and knowledge through the development, launch and operations of "KOUNOTORI". In order to meet the strict safety standards imposed on spacecraft flying and approaching manned space facilities, JAXA developed the rendezvous and capture technology and applied it to "KONOTORI". This new technology has also been adopted by the U.S. resupply vehicle, and we believe it has become and international standard. Moreover, we have also achieved many results that might lead to progress of future manned space activities through technical demonstrations making use of opportunities of "KONOTORI" operation, such as demonstration of the Small Re-entry Capsule (HSRC) on "KOUNOTORI7" and Wireless LAN Demonstration (WLD) on "KOUNOTORI9".

JAXA is currently developing a new resupply vehicle, the HTV-X, as a successor to the KOUNOTORI. Based on our accumulated technologies and knowledge, we will steadily develop the HTV-X as a new resupply vehicle with improved transport capability and operability, as well as a spacecraft that can be used for cargo resupply to the manned cislunar station, Gateway.

Finally, we would like to express here our heartfelt gratitude to many officials from domestic and international organizations and many individuals who provided us with precious support and assistance to "KOUNOTORI" missions. We would like to ask you for continued attention and support to us.

В среду цилиндрический аппарат "Конотори-9", запущенный 21 мая, забрал с МКС мусор и, отделившись от станции, прекратил свое существование.

Грузовики этой серии грузоподъемностью 6 тонн снабжают МКС всем необходимым с 2009 года.

Запуск нового грузовика HTV-X, который разрабатывает JAXA, намечен на 2021 год.

Japan's 16-tonne Konoutori-9 cargo ship, which left the ISS on Aug 18, has been deorbited. After orbit lowering burns at 0040 and 0211 UTC it performed the deorbit burn at 0640 UTC Aug 20 and entered the atmosphere at about 0707 UTC over the Pacific. It burnt up on reentry.

Destroyed along with HTV-9 was EP-8, a pallet of discarded ISS batteries.  One more pallet, EP-9, remains aboard ISS and is expected to be jettisoned into orbit.
