Rocket Lab's Next Mission to Launch Satellites for NASA, NRO and the University of New South Wales

Rocket Lab's next rideshare mission will enable university research into Earth's magnetic field, support the testing of new smallsat communications architecture and demonstrate a streamlined, commercial approach for getting government small satellites into space.

Long Beach, California. 9 March 2020 – Rocket Lab, a space technology company and the global leader in dedicated small satellite launch, has announced today that its next mission will deploy payloads for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra Space.

The launch will take place from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula, with a 14-day launch window scheduled to commence from 27 March 2020 NZT. The mission will be Rocket Lab's 12th Electron launch since the company began launches in May 2017.

The rideshare mission will launch several small satellites, including the ANDESITE (Ad-Hoc Network Demonstration for Extended Satellite-Based Inquiry and Other Team Endeavors) satellite created by electrical and mechanical engineering students and professors at Boston University. The satellite will launch as part of NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI) and will conduct groundbreaking scientific study into Earth's magnetic field. Once in space, the ANDESITE satellite will initiate measurements of the magnetosphere with onboard sensors, later releasing eight pico satellites carrying small magnetometer sensors to track electric currents flowing in and out of the atmosphere, a phenomenon also known as space weather. These variations in the electrical activity racing through space can have a big impact on our lives here on Earth, causing interruptions to things like radio communications and electrical systems. The ANDESITE satellite follows on from Rocket Lab's first ELaNa (Educational Launch of Nanosatellites) launch for NASA, the ELaNa-19 mission, which launched a host of educational satellites to orbit on Electron in December 2018.

The mission also carries three payloads designed, built and operated by the NRO. The mission was procured under the agency's Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR) contract vehicle. RASR allows the NRO to explore new launch opportunities that provide a streamlined, commercial approach for getting small satellites into space, as well as provide those working in the small satellite community with timely and cost-effective access to space. This mission follows Rocket Lab's first dedicated mission for the NRO, Birds of a Feather, which was launched on 31 January 2020 NZT from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1.

The ANDESITE and NRO payloads will be joined on the mission by the M2 Pathfinder satellite, a collaboration between the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra Space and the Australian Government. The M2 Pathfinder will test communications architecture and other technologies that will assist in informing the future space capabilities of Australia. The satellite will demonstrate the ability of an onboard software-based radio to operate and reconfigure while in orbit.

Rocket Lab founder and chief executive, Peter Beck, says the mission is a great example of the kind of cutting-edge research and fast-paced innovation that small satellites are enabling.

"It's a privilege to have NASA and the NRO launch on Electron again, and we're excited to welcome the University of New South Wales onto our manifest for the first time, too," he says. This initiative provides university teams like ANDESITE with real life, hands-on experience in conducting an actual space research mission in conjunction with NASA. The students grow as professionals and NASA benefits from the research. We are truly excited about this collaborative mission."

The mission has been named 'Don't Stop Me Now' in recognition of Rocket Lab board member and avid Queen fan Scott Smith, who recently passed away.

Rocket Lab will not be carrying out any recovery testing on the Electron launch vehicle during this mission.

An update on Rocket Lab's response to COVID-19

As the COVID-19 situation has developed globally, we've been collaborating with our team members, customers, and health officials to ensure we're doing all we can to protect our people and play our part in reducing the spread of the virus.

The health of our team, our families, and the wider communities we're a part of is and always will be our top priority. For this reason, all non-production Rocket Lab team members who can work fr om home have been doing so this past week and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. This includes teams at our headquarters in Long Beach, California, as well as at our launch sites and facilities in Wallops Island, Virginia, and in New Zealand.

Following yesterday's decision by the City of Long Beach and State of California to issue "Safer At Home" orders that close all non-essential businesses, we have furthered our precautionary efforts and now the majority of our Long Beach team is working from home. Because our work in aerospace manufacturing is categorized as a critical infrastructure sector under The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) directive, a significantly reduced number of mission critical personnel will remain operating from our facilities. We are committed to safely providing this essential service to our United States Government customers during these challenging times.

We're taking additional precautions to care for these team members, including physical distancing and increased cleaning and sanitization of our work environment.

Our next mission is still on track, with lift-off currently scheduled for no earlier than 30 March UTC. We are also working with our customers and local government authorities to minimize any potential disruption to our future missions planned in the months ahead. In recent years, we have placed an increased emphasis on delivering responsive launch capability for our customers, which means having launch vehicles and pads ready for rapid call up launch capability. As a result of this approach, we're fortunate to have enough launch vehicles ready that we can effectively manage a pause in production with minimal impact to our scheduled manifest.  

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, so will we. In the uncertain days, weeks and months ahead we'll be heeding the advice of health and government authorities to keep our team and communities safe. We are grateful to city and state leaders for making the difficult but necessary decisions to lim it the spread of COVID-19. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the healthcare workers, supermarket employees, and researchers who are supporting us all through these uncharted waters.

WASHINGTON — Rocket Lab is continuing with preparations for a launch later this month despite the coronavirus pandemic, although another small launch company's plans for a launch this month remain unclear.

Rocket Lab spokesperson Morgan Bailey said March 19 that the company was still planning to launch an Electron rocket from New Zealand later this month. The launch is currently scheduled for no earlier than March 30, a few days later originally announced.

That mission, called "Don't Stop Me Now" by the company, will carry three payloads for the National Reconnaissance Office. It will also place into orbit ANDESITE, a cubesat built by students at Boston University and whose launch is being provided by NASA, as well as a cubesat from the University of New South Wales in Australia.

The launch is proceeding despite an order by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to close the country's borders to those who are not citizens or residents of the country, effective March 20. The move is intended to stem the growth of cases of the coronavirus disease COVID-19, which reached 39 in New Zealand as of March 20.

Bailey said the launch teams, as well as all the payloads for the mission, are already at the company's Launch Complex 1. Payload integration and a wet dress rehearsal of the rocket are scheduled for early next week.

Rocket Lab hasn't disclosed if the pandemic and restrictions on travel will affect future launches, either in New Zealand or the United States. The company had been planning its first Electron launch from Launch Complex 2 at Wallops Island, Virginia, for the second quarter of this year.

In response to the evolving COVID-19 situation, we have paused launch preparations for our next mission to protect the health and safety of Rocket Lab team members, our families, and the wider community.

The mission was scheduled to lift off fr om Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand on 30 March UTC. Launch preparations have been paused, however, following the New Zealand Government's announcement on 23 March NZDT to implement the Level 4 COVID-19 response which requires most businesses to close and instructs people to stay at home. We commend the government for taking this drastic but necessary step to lim it the spread of COVID-19.

We have the full support of our customers in pausing operations and we are grateful for their understanding in these challenging times. We are working with the government, health officials, and our customers to determine when launch operations can resume. The launch vehicle and ground systems will remain in a state of readiness for launch as the evolving situation allows it. The majority of our team is working from home with the exception of a few essential personnel who are monitoring and maintaining critical systems.

In recent years, we have placed an increased emphasis on delivering responsive launch capability for our customers, which means having launch vehicles and pads ready for rapid call-up launch capability. As a result of this approach, we're fortunate to have enough launch vehicles ready that we can effectively manage a pause in production and still have vehicles available for launch as soon as conditions allow.

In the days, weeks, and months to come, we'll be following the advice of the government and health authorities to protect our teams in the United States and New Zealand.

Our deepest thanks go to the medical professionals, scientists and researchers, supermarket workers, and all those providing essential services in these trying times. We are grateful for all that you do.

Представители компании сообщили в четверг, что наземные системы ракеты-носителя и стартового комплекса остаются в состоянии готовности, и будут внедрены усиленные процессы охраны здоровья и безопасности, включая физическое дистанцирование, разделение смен, ведение регистров отслеживания контактов, ограничение взаимодействия между членами команды, усиленную очистку и строгие гигиенические стандарты.
В ходе предстоящего пуска на орбиту будут выведены следующие космические аппараты: NASA ANDESITE, три нагрузки NRO и спутник M2 Pathfinder (построен при участии университета Нового Южного Уэльса и правительста Австралии).

       Запуск двухступенчатой ракеты Electron с миссией, получившей название Don't Stop Me Now, будет осуществлен со стартовой площадки компании Rocket Lab на полуострове Махия в Новой Зеландии во временное окно с 04:43 до 06:32 по Гринвичу (с 07:43 до 09:32 мск).

After a delay of more than two months caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Rocket Lab is set to launch five payloads from its New Zealand spaceport for the National Reconnaissance Office, NASA and the University of New South Wales at Canberra in Australia.

The launch window for Rocket Lab's light-class Electron launcher opens at 0443 GMT (12:43 a.m. EDT) Thursday and extends to 0632 GMT (2:32 a.m. EDT).

The mission will mark the 12th flight of an Electron rocket since its debut in 2017.

Rocket Lab named the mission "Don't Stop Me Now," in honor of a company board member and avid band of the rock group Queen who recently died.

The mission was previously on track to launch March 30, but Rocket Lab paused launch operations after the government of New Zealand ordered most businesses closed and urged people to stay at home in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Rocket Lab, which is headquartered in Southern California and launches rockets from New Zealand, said it made the decision "to protect the health and safety of Rocket Lab team members, our families, and the wider community."

Rocket Lab's primary launch site is located on Mahia Peninsula, a region on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island. The commercial space company developed a privately-owned spaceport at the site, which is home to one operational launch pad and another under construction.

Made of carbon composite materials, the two-stage Electron rocket stands around 55 feet (17 meters) tall. It's design to loft light payloads into orbit, such as microsatellites and CubeSats.

Rocket Lab will not perform another experiment to test a re-entry of the Electron rocket's first stage on this mission.

Rocket Lab performed guided re-entry experiments on the first stage during the company's two most recent launches, demonstrating the booster could survive a plunge back through the atmosphere after releasing the Electron's second stage and satellite payloads to continue into orbit.

The Electron boosters on those missions — which occurred in December and January — carried guidance and navigation equipment, an independent S-band telemetry system, an on-board flight computer and sensors to gather data during the stage's re-entry back into the atmosphere.

Rocket Lab aims to recover future Electron first stages, beginning as early as the 17th Electron flight scheduled later this year. After initial efforts to recover the stage after parachuting into the sea, Rocket Lab eventually wants to catch boosters by helicopter as they drift toward the ocean under a parafoil.

INTERFAX.RU - Ракета Electron в субботу стартовала на орбиту с тремя спутниками Национального управления военно-космической разведки США (NRO), а также малыми космическими аппаратами NASA и австралийского университета, сообщила американская компания-разработчик носителя Rocket Lab.

Запуск трехступенчатой ракеты Electron с миссией, получившей название Don't Stop Me Now, был осуществлен со стартовой площадки компании Rocket Lab на полуострове Махия в Новой Зеландии в 05:12 UTC (08:12 мск).

Запуск для NRO проведен в рамках программы вывода на орбиту малых спутников коммерческими операторами (Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR)), инициированной ведомством в 2018 году. Ее основная цель - использование американскими военными малых носителей частных компаний для оперативного вывода в космос небольших грузов и развертывания группировок дешевых миниспутников на низких орбитах.

Это уже второй запуск ракеты Electron компании Rocket Lab с разведывательными спутниками NRO. Первый был осуществлен в январе нынешнего года.

В интересах NASA на орбиту выводится спутник ANDESITE, который предназначен для исследования магнитного поля Земли. Он создан студентами и преподавателями центра космической физики Бостонского университета.

Что касается австралийского аппарата - M2 Pathfinder, то это спутник Университета Нового Южного Уэльса (UNSW), который запущен для испытания коммуникационной архитектуры и других технологий.

Ракета Electron аэрокосмической компании Rocket Lab может выводить на низкую опорную орбиту до 250 кг груза. Стоимость пуска ракеты составляет от 4,9 до 6,6 млн долл., что чрезвычайно мало по сравнению со стартом ракет среднего и тяжелого классов. Таким образом, Rocket Lab стремится произвести революцию на рынке ракетно-космических услуг.

Rocket Lab confirms the Electron's second stage placed the Curie kick stage and the mission's five satellite payloads into the planned transfer orbit. The Curie kick stage was confirmed to have separated from the Electron second stage.
The Curie engine will ignite around 51 minutes after liftoff for a 96-second burn to place the payloads into the proper orbit for deployment.

Separation of the satellites from the Curie kick stage is expected around an hour after liftoff, but Rocket Lab is ending its live webcast at this time. The company says it will update the progress of the mission on social media.

ANDESITE is a 6U cubesat containing eight  0.5U (0.20 x 0.10  x 0.025m) magnetometer subsatellites,  Node 1 to Node 8. The parent satellite is called ANDESITE Mule.

The objects from the Electron launch have been added to the Space-Track catalog, but with no orbital data. It is to be hoped that they will eventuallyrelease orbital data for the second stage and for the civilian ANDESITE satellite once they are no longer close to the NRO sats

Radio observations have located payloads of the 'Don't Stop Me Now' launch from this morning in a 590 km orbit:

That's some 90 km higher then my pre-flight estimate, so I have removed the elset from the Launchtower again.

Based on the 590 km reported figure, here is my estimate of the initial Electron ground track through kick stage burn which would have been at 0602 UTC Jun 13 off the coast of Portugal

n Australian-made miniature satellite was launched in New Zealand on June 13 to test communications architecture and technologies that will help inform future space capabilities in Australia.

The M2 Pathfinder, developed by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra in partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force, is a significant step in developing Defence space systems.

Small satellites such as the M2 Pathfinder - also known as CubeSats and about the size of a loaf of bread - allow high-tech capabilities to be tested in space at a lower cost than larger satellites.

Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said the satellite would help inform future capability designs for the Australian Defence Force.

"The collaboration between UNSW Canberra and Air Force allows small satellites to be used for evaluating technologies on more complex space systems, such as communications or Earth observation satellites," Senator Reynolds said.

"The collaboration, which started in 2017, has enabled UNSW Canberra to develop a number of space courses and programs to benefit Defence personnel.

"The experience gained in the development and operation of these spacecraft also offers educational benefits for Defence personnel studying space programs at UNSW Canberra. This further enhances the future Defence space workforce."

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said multiple Australian suppliers and industry partners contributed to build and testing activities for the M2 Pathfinder, including the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre, operated by the Australian National University.

"The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre is an example of the world-class space capabilities on offer by Australian industry and academia," Ms Price said.

Staff at UNSW Canberra will conduct a series of communications tests with the M2 Pathfinder satellite over the coming months. Results of the tests will improve the design of future satellites and provide valuable experience to the engineering and flight operations teams.

RAAF M2 Pathfinder and ANDESITE, launched on Jun 13, now have public TLEs, tracked in 586 x 602 km x 97.7  deg and 583 x 601 km x 97.7 deg sun-synch orbits with 1733 local time descending node.
