CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. --
The U.S. Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center successfully delivered the third GPS III satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, Feb. 5, 2020.

GPS III Space Vehicle (SV) 03 was safely transported from the Lockheed Martin facility in Waterton, Colorado to Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, Florida. The satellite named "Columbus" in honor of Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who completed four transatlantic voyages and explored the Americas,, was carried aboard a C-17 Globemaster III originating from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

The delivery of GPS III SV03 starts the clock for final testing and checkout prior to launch. The satellite will be processed at the Astrotech Space Operations facility in Florida to ensure the full functionality of the satellite, prepare the satellite for propellant loading, and encapsulate the satellite in its protective fairing. At the completion of these activities, the satellite will be horizontally integrated with the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

"The arrival of the third GPS III satellite is another landmark for the program and is a testament to the professionalism, hard work and dedication of GPS team members from all parts of the country," said Col. Edward Byrne, chief of Production Corps' Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division. "The delivery of SV03 marks the start of our second GPS III launch campaign on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and brings us another step closer in advancing the GPS constellation with more capable satellites."

GPS III SV03 is slated to launch in April 2020. Once on-orbit, it will join the operational constellation of 31 GPS satellites, delivering enhanced resiliency, better accuracy, and advanced anti-jam capabilities. GPS delivers the gold standard in positioning, navigation, and timing services supporting vital U.S. and allied operations worldwide, and underpins critical financial, transportation, and agricultural infrastructure, supporting billions of users around the globe.

The U.S. Space Force's third new-generation GPS 3-series navigation satellite has arrived in Florida for final processing and fueling ahead of a launch currently targeted for April 29 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft landed Feb. 5 at Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, Florida, after a ride aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo plane fr om Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, near the satellite's Denver-area Lockheed Martin factory.

The navigation satellite was trucked to the nearby Astrotech payload processing facility, wh ere Lockheed Martin teams will configure the craft for launch, fill it with maneuvering propellant, and encapsulate the satellite inside a SpaceX payload fairing before moving to a nearby SpaceX launch facility.

Teams there will mount the payload horizontally to a Falcon 9 rocket before rollout and launch.

Liftoff of the GPS SV03 spacecraft is currently scheduled for April 29 some time during a four-hour launch period opening at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT). An exact launch time will be announced later.

The GPS SV03 satellite is the third in the newest series of GPS navigation spacecraft, following the launch of the GPS 3 SV01 satellite in December 2018 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, and the deployment of the SV02 platform in August 2019 by a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket.

Both missions were successful, and the satellites are operating normally in orbit roughly 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers) above Earth.

The GPS SV03 satellite is named "Columbus" after Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who visited the Americas on four expeditions beginning in 1492. The SV01 and SV02 spacecraft were named Vespucci and Magellan.

The GPS network provides positioning and timing services worldwide for military and civilian users, beaming signals relied upon by airliners, ATMs, drivers and smart bombs, among numerous other users.

The Space Force says GPS SV03 will join 31 operational satellites in the GPS fleet providing non-stop positioning, navigation and timing services.

The GPS 3 satellites offer more accurate navigation signals and boast longer design lifetimes. The new GPS 3 satellites provide a new L1C civilian signal that is compatible with Europe's Galileo navigation network.

Like the previous line of Boeing-built GPS 2F satellites, all GPS 3-series spacecraft broadcast a dedicated L5 signal geared to support air navigation. The GPS 3 satellites also continue beaming an encrypted military-grade navigation signal known as M-code.

Lockheed Martin is on contract with the Air Force to build up to 32 satellites, including 10 GPS 3 spacecraft and 22 upgraded GPS 3F satellites.

The United States Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) has decided to reschedule the launch of GPS III SV03 (GPS III-3) fr om Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to minimize the potential of COVID-19 exposure to the launch crew and early-orbit operators.

The current GPS constellation is healthy, allowing for a strategic pause to ensure the health and safety of our force without operational impact.

Originally scheduled for late April 2020, the launch is now projected for no-earlier than June 30, pending a re-evaluation in May.

"We do not make this decision lightly, however, given our GPS constellation remains strong, we have the opportunity to make a deliberate decision to maintain our mission assurance posture, without introducing additional health risk to personnel or mission risk to the launch," said Lt. Gen. John F. Thompson, SMC commander and program executive officer for space.

GPS III-3 brings the third modernized GPS III satellite to the operational GPS mission, and the team remains ready to execute. GPS III will bring three times better accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capability than its predecessor.

The current constellation is healthy with 31 satellites on orbit, allowing the team to take this strategic pause without gaps in coverage or capability.

"The GPS system supports vital U.S. and allied operations worldwide, unabated. As the COVID-19 pandemic is a threat to national security, likewise, rescheduling the launch is in the interest of national security," said Gen. Thompson. "We have to get it right the first time, and protecting our people is just as important as cost, schedule, and performance."

SMC still plans to complete the next three GPS launches in 2020. The team is taking the necessary steps to protect the health of personnel to allow a swift return to the mission.

"Some of the steps include procedural and facility modifications at the GPS III Launch and Checkout Capability (LCC) operations center and reducing the onsite crew size to provide adequate physical distancing, per CDC guidelines," said Col. Edward Byrne, chief of Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division. "Once these efforts are completed, and the crews have rehearsed and are deemed proficient and ready to execute under these modified conditions, we fully intend to return to our launch cadence for deploying GPS III satellites."

A leader of GPS III acquisition, SMC's Production Corps is the United States Space Force's acquisition office for producing and delivering GPS satellites, ground systems and military user equipment. The Production Corps' agile program management techniques, smart business approach and close teaming with Lockheed Martin Space are enabling the production and delivery of GPS III's new civil and warfighting capabilities by 2023. GPS delivers the "gold standard" of space-based positioning, navigation, and timing services vital to U.S. and allied operations worldwide, and underpins critical financial, transportation, and agricultural infrastructure that more than four billion users have come to depend on daily.

SMC's Launch Enterprise, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, is responsible for the acquisition and operation of launch vehicles, which includes mission assurance and launch safety. The Launch Enterprise is also responsible for leading the effort to certify new entrants to provide launch services for National Security payloads.

GPS III SV03 will be launched into operational orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. GPS III SV03 will be the second National Security Space Launch (NSSL) mission to be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and the first NSSL mission wh ere a Launch Service Provider is recovering a booster.

The Space and Missile Systems Center is the U.S. Space Force's center of excellence for acquiring and developing military space systems. SMC's portfolio includes space launch, global positioning, military space vehicle communications, defense meteorological space vehicles, range systems, space vehicle control networks, space-based infrared systems, and space situational awareness capabilities.

SMC continues to deliver vital capabilities to the warfighter and the world, despite the challenges of COVID-19.  Recent examples include the successful launch of AEHF-6 on March 26, Operational Acceptance of GPS III SV02 by Space Operations Command on March 27, and the inclusion of SV02 into the operational GPS constellation on April 1.

U.S. military officials said Tuesday the launch of the satellite for the GPS navigation network — planned for April 29 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket — has been delayed to no earlier than June 30 to avoid exposing launch crews to the COVID-19 viral disease.

However, the next launch of the military's X-37B spaceplane remains on track for liftoff in May on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket, officials said.

The U.S. Space Force said Tuesday that the launch of the next Global Positioning System satellite from Cape Canaveral would be delayed from late April "to minimize the potential of COVID-19 exposure to the launch crew and early-orbit operators."

The Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center, which oversees the military's launch and satellite programs, said the two-month delay in the next GPS satellite launch would have no impacts on the overall health of the GPS network, which is used by military forces and civilians around the world.

"The current GPS constellation is healthy, allowing for a strategic pause to ensure the health and safety of our force without operational impact," SMC said in a press release.

SMC said it will re-evaluate the launch schedule for the next GPS satellite in May.

"We do not make this decision lightly, however, given our GPS constellation remains strong, we have the opportunity to make a deliberate decision to maintain our mission assurance posture, without introducing additional health risk to personnel or mission risk to the launch," said Lt. Gen. John F. Thompson, SMC commander and program executive officer for space, in a press release.

GPS satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers), with an inclination of 55 degrees to the equator. The network broadcasts global positioning and timing signals, supporting applications ranging from guided bombs to billions of smartphones used by civilians around the world.

Military officials said there are 31 GPS satellites currently in the fleet, and they expect no gaps in coverage or capability caused by the launch delay.

"The GPS system supports vital U.S. and allied operations worldwide, unabated," Thompson said. "As the COVID-19 pandemic is a threat to national security, likewise, rescheduling the launch is in the interest of national security. We have to get it right the first time, and protecting our people is just as important as cost, schedule, and performance."

The next GPS satellite to launch is currently in a processing facility near Cape Canaveral after shipment from its Lockheed Martin factory in Colorado earlier this year. It's the third spacecraft in the newest generation of GPS satellites, called the GPS 3-series.

Space Force officials said they still expect to launch three GPS satellites this year. All of the GPS satellites planned for launch this year will fly on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets from Cape Canaveral.

The launch of the GPS 3 SV03 satellite — now planned in late June — will be SpaceX's first launch on a mission for the Space For since the new military service was established in December. The next GPS launch will also mark the first time SpaceX will attempt to recover the Falcon 9's first stage booster on a National Security Space Launch mission, the designation for the military's highest-priority space launches.

In preparation for the launch in late June, SMC said teams will introduce procedural and facility changes at the GPS 3 launch and checkout facility, located at a Lockheed Martin facility near Denver, to reduce the size of the crew onsite to ensure "adequate physical distancing."

"Once these efforts are completed, and the crews have rehearsed and are deemed proficient and ready to execute under these modified conditions, we fully intend to return to our launch cadence for deploying GPS 3 satellites," said Col. Edward Byrne, chief of SMC's Medium Earth Orbit Space Systems Division.

As of Monday, CNBC reported that six SpaceX employees have tested positive for the coronavirus. ULA confirmed Monday that one of its employees at a facility near Denver tested positive for the virus.

Other Space Force operations are proceeding according to plan, SMC said.

The U.S. military's next GPS navigation satellite moved to a SpaceX launch facility late Thursday at Cape Canaveral, ready for attachment with a Falcon 9 rocket for liftoff June 30 to take the place of an aging GPS spacecraft launched from Florida's Space Coast more than 20 years ago.

Built by Lockheed Martin, the spacecraft was closed up inside the payload shroud of its Falcon 9 rocket Sunday inside the Astrotech payload processing facility in Titusville, then trucked to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station late Thursday. Once in position inside a SpaceX rocket hangar, ground teams planned to mount the spacecraft and payload fairing to the Falcon 9 launcher that will carry the GPS satellite into orbit.

The third in the military's new GPS 3-series of navigation satellites is scheduled for launch from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad during a 15-minute window opening at 3:55 p.m. EDT (1955 GMT) Tuesday, June 30.

The GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft follows the launch of SV01 and SV02 in December 2018 and August 2019. Those satellites launched on SpaceX Falcon 9 and United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rockets, respectively.

Both of the previous GPS 3-series satellites are healthy, according to the U.S. Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center. They were "set healthy" and officially entered the operational GPS constellation Jan. 13 and April 1, an SMC spokesperson said.

The GPS 3 SV03 satellite will launch into an elliptical transfer orbit aboard the Falcon 9 rocket. After deployment from the launch vehicle, the GPS satellite will use its own propulsion system to reach a circular orbit inclined 55 degrees to the equator at an altitude of about 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers).

The launch June 30 is timed to place the GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft into Plane E, Slot 4 of the GPS constellation. That position is currently occupied by a GPS satellite launched May 10, 2000 (https://spaceflightnow.com/delta/d278/000511launch.html), from Cape Canaveral on a Delta 2 rocket. Military officials did not say whether that satellite, which was originally designed for a 10-year mission, will be decommissioned or moved to another slot in the GPS network.

The GPS satellites are spread among six orbital planes, each with four primary spacecraft, plus spares.

The GPS network provides positioning and timing services worldwide for military and civilian users, beaming signals relied upon by airliners, ATMs, drivers and smart bombs, among numerous other users.

The GPS 3 satellites provide more accurate navigation signals and boasting longer design lifetimes of 15 years. The new GPS 3 satellites also broadcast e a new L1C civilian signal that is compatible with Europe's Galileo network and Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System.

Other space-based navigation networks operated by Japan and China are also adopting similar compatible signals.

Like the previous line of Boeing-built GPS 2F satellites, all GPS 3-series spacecraft broadcast a dedicated L5 signal geared to support air navigation. The GPS 3 satellites also continue beaming an encrypted military-grade navigation signal known as M-code.

The M-code signal allows GPS satellites to broadcast higher-power, jam-resistant signals over specific regions, such as a military theater or battlefield. The capability provides U.S. and allied forces with more reliable navigation services, and could also allow the military to intentionally disrupt or jam civilian-grade GPS signals in a particular region, while the M-code signal remains unimpeded.

The launch June 30 will be the first dedicated flight by SpaceX for the U.S. Space Force since the new military branch was established in December.

It comes four days after the scheduled launch Friday of a different Falcon 9 rocket from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a few miles to the north of pad 40. That mission was set to loft 57 satellites for SpaceX's Starlink broadband Internet constellation, along with a pair of commercial Earth-imaging microsatellites for BlackSky.

SpaceX test-fired the Falcon 9 rocket assigned to the GPS launch Thursday, less than a day after a similar static fire test of the Falcon booster for the Starlink/BlackSky mission.

Unlike SpaceX's launch of the first GPS 3-series satellite in 2018, military officials overseeing the flight have allowed SpaceX to set aside enough propellant reserve on the Falcon 9 booster to attempt a landing on an offshore drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. SpaceX flew the Falcon 9 rocket in a fully expendable configuration for the GPS 3 SV01 launch in 2018.

The Space and Missile Systems Center's Lockheed Martin-built GPS III SV03 satellite was encapsulated within a SpaceX payload fairing at Astrotech on June 21 in preparation for its upcoming launch on June 30 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

Encapsulation of the satellite within the payload fairing protects the satellite against the impact of dynamic pressure and aerodynamic heating during its harrowing journey through the earth's atmosphere, and supports the ability to communicate with the satellite until separation from the launch vehicle on-orbit.

Originally scheduled to launch on April 29, the GPS III-3 mission took a 60-day tactical pause in order to implement new health and safety measures to protect launch and operations crew during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This pause allowed SMC to design and implement these measures in collaboration with contractor and launch provider partners as well as medical professionals. There were no impacts to the readiness and availability of the GPS constellation, which remains healthy. The impact to cost and launch schedule was minimal.

GPS III SV03 is now ready to be rolled out to its pad at Space Launch Complex-40, where it will be mated with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It is scheduled for launch on June 30. The 15-minute launch window opens at 3:55 p.m. EDT.

SV03 will join the current 31-satellite operational constellation to continue to provide the "gold standard" in positioning, navigation, and timing services for more than four billion users worldwide.

As the U.S. enters a new era with space as a warfighting domain, SMC is re-architecting efforts which will manage other significant U.S. acquisition agility initiatives to drive innovation within the space enterprise and speed the delivery of new capabilities to warfighters.

Космический аппарат GPS III весом 3,8 тонны станет очередным элементом в планируемой орбитальной группировке из 32 спутников глобального позиционирования третьего поколения. SpaceX is preparing for liftoff Tuesday of its first mission for the U.S. Space Force, a launch from Cape Canaveral that will deploy a new GPS navigation satellite using a redesigned profile to allow the Falcon 9 rocket's first stage booster to reserve enough propellant for landing on SpaceX's drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The launch profile adjustment to make landing of the Falcon 9 booster possible ended up saving "several million dollars" for the military from the original SpaceX launch contract value of $96.5 million, according to Walter Lauderdale, mission director for the GPS SV03 launch from the Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center.

The U.S. Space Force's third GPS 3-series navigation satellite is set for liftoff from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad during a 15-minute launch window opening at 3:55 p.m. EDT (1955 GMT) Tuesday. There's a 60 percent chance of favorable weather, according to a forecast issued by the Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron.

Built by Lockheed Martin, the spacecraft will join two previous GPS 3 satellites launched by SpaceX in 2018 and by United Launch Alliance last year.

Tuesday's mission is the first by SpaceX for the Space Force since the establishment of the new military branch in December.

"This is our first U.S. Space Force launch, and we're really excited about it and hope this is the first of many, many of those launches in the future," said Lee Rosen, SpaceX's vice president of customer operations and integration.

During a nearly 90-minute launch sequence, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket head northeast from Cape Canaveral and propel the 9,505-pound (4,311-kilogram) GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft into an elliptical transfer orbit ranging between about 250 miles (400 kilometers) and 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers) in altitude. The Falcon 9's on-board computer will aim to release the GPS 3 SV03 satellite into an orbit inclined 55 degrees to the equator.

On SpaceX's first launch of a GPS navigation satellite in December 2018, military officials required the launch company to devote all of the Falcon 9 rocket's capacity to placing the spacecraft into orbit. That meant SpaceX could not install landing legs on the Falcon 9's first stage or attempt recovery of the booster.

SpaceX lands, refurbishes and re-flies Falcon 9 first stages to reduce costs, and it is the only launch company that currently reuses rocket hardware.

The launch of the GPS 3 SV03 mission Tuesday is the first flight with a high-priority national security satellite that will reserve propellant for landing of the rocket. SpaceX has recovered rockets on previous launches with military payloads, such as a Falcon Heavy mission last June, but those missions carried experimental technology demonstration and research satellites — not operational spacecraft like a GPS satellite.

On SpaceX's first GPS launch in 2018, the military required the Falcon 9 rocket to place the spacecraft into an orbit with a higher perigee, or low point, of more than 740 miles, or about 1,200 kilometers. Teams also loaded extra fuel into the GPS spacecraft as an extra precaution.

It was the first high-priority national security payload to launch on a SpaceX rocket, and it was also the first satellite in a new design of GPS spacecraft.

"Simply put, there was insufficient performance given the mission trajectory and payload weight, combined with the uncertainties associated with this demanding mission," Lauderdale said.

"Our evaluation of that mission's performance, combined with additional work with SpaceX, reduced uncertainty in many areas," Lauderdale said. "When we approached SpaceX to revise some spacecraft requirements for this mission ... they responded with an opportunity to recover the booster in exchange for adding these requirements, as well as other considerations."

Officials are now more comfortable with the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket and the new GPS 3-series satellite design. That allowed engineers to load less propellant into the third GPS 3 satellite.

Mission planners also changed the perigee of the spacecraft's initial orbit after launch from around 740 miles to 250 miles, according to Col. Edward Byrne, senior materiel leader at SMC's Medium Earth Orbit space systems division.

"All that required from us was to reassess our burn profile, so we made some slight modifications to that burn profile, but there's been no mission impact associated with the booster recovery option," Byrne said in a pre-launch conference call with reporters.

One change to the Falcon 9 rocket requested by the Space Force for the GPS SV03 mission is a gray band of thermal insulation on the launcher's upper stage. The thermal layer will help maintain kerosene fuel at proper temperatures during a nearly one-hour coast phase between the first and second burns of the upper stage's Merlin engine.

SpaceX has tested the thermal layer before, but it did not fly on the first GPS 3 launch in 2018. The company has experimented with long-duration coasts of the Falcon upper stage to gather data before the first dedicated launch of a national security payload on SpaceX's triple-core Falcon Heavy rocket late this year.

Military engineers charged with overseeing the design and production of SpaceX rockets for national security missions assessed numerous configuration changes since the Falcon 9's first launch of a GPS satellite in 2018.

"Since the GPS 3 launch in December 2018, we've worked with SpaceX to stay current on the configuration of the Falcon 9, evaluating 665 changes," Lauderdale said. "This enabled us to maintain the vehicle technical baseline that is the foundation of our independent mission assurance."

The military has contracted with SpaceX to launch the fourth, fifth and sixth GPS 3 satellites. Assuming the launch of GPS SV03 goes according to plan, the SV04 mission could launch from Cape Canaveral on a Falcon 9 rocket as soon as Sept. 30, according to the Space and Missile Systems Center.

The GPS SV05 spacecraft is scheduled for launch on a Falcon 9 rocket in January.

Space Force officials have not yet approved SpaceX to launch critical national security satellites using previously-flown boosters. SpaceX has re-launched Falcon boosters 37 times to date with a 100 percent success record.

Lauderdale said the SMC mission assurance team is becoming more familiar with how SpaceX refurbishes rockets in between flights.

"I can't commit to when we'll be ready," he said Friday, referring to when the military could launch a national security payload on a reused Falcon 9 booster.

SpaceX is building an all-new Falcon Heavy rocket for a national security launch late this year, and the company is expected to use a brand new booster for the next GPS launch no earlier than Sept. 30.

The military is currently considering proposals from four companies — SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin and Northrop Grumman — in the next round of launch service procurements. Lauderdale said the military will allow launch service providers who win the the so-called "Phase 2" contracts to bid reused rockets for national security space launches in an effort to reduce costs.

"As a program, we are open and ready and looking forward to whatever industry wants to make available to us, but predominately we've been looking at the Phase 2 competition as that opportunity," Lauderdale said.

The GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft awaiting launch Tuesday will use its on-board propulsion system to circularize its orbit after separation from the Falcon 9 rocket. It's expected to enter service later this year.

Both of the previous GPS 3-series satellites are healthy, according to the U.S. Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center. They were "set healthy" and officially entered the operational GPS constellation Jan. 13 and April 1, an SMC spokesperson said.

The launch of the GPS 3 SV03 spacecraft is timed to inject the satellite into Plane E, Slot 4 of the GPS constellation. That position is currently occupied by a GPS satellite launched May 10, 2000, from Cape Canaveral on a Delta 2 rocket. Military officials did not say whether that satellite, which was originally designed for a 10-year mission, will be decommissioned or moved to another slot in the GPS network.

The GPS satellites are spread among six orbital planes, each with four primary spacecraft, plus spares. Byrne said Friday the GPS constellation currently consists of 31 satellites.

The GPS network provides positioning and timing services worldwide for military and civilian users, beaming signals relied upon by airliners, ATMs, drivers and smart bombs, among numerous other users.

"The Global Positioning System has become part of our critical national infrastructure, from transportation to financial markets to energy grids to the rideshare industry," said Tonya Ladwig, acting vice president of Lockheed Martin's navigation systems division. "It's no longer a matter of did you use GPS today. It's a matter of how many times did you actually use it."

The GPS 3 satellites provide more accurate navigation signals and boasting longer design lifetimes of 15 years. The new GPS 3 satellites also broadcast e a new L1C civilian signal that is compatible with Europe's Galileo network and Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System.

Other space-based navigation networks operated by Japan and China are also adopting similar compatible signals.

Like the previous line of Boeing-built GPS 2F satellites, all GPS 3-series spacecraft broadcast a dedicated L5 signal geared to support air navigation. The GPS 3 satellites also continue beaming an encrypted military-grade navigation signal known as M-code.

The M-code signal allows GPS satellites to broadcast higher-power, jam-resistant signals over specific regions, such as a military theater or battlefield. The capability provides U.S. and allied forces with more reliable navigation services, and could also allow the military to intentionally disrupt or jam civilian-grade GPS signals in a particular region, while the M-code signal remains unimpeded.

L3Harris Technologies builds the navigation payloads for the GPS 3 satellites.

Ladwig said the GPS 3 SV04 and SV05 spacecraft are complete and in storage awaiting launch, and the next three satellites are fully assembled and undergoing environmental testing. SV09 and SV10 are currently being assembled at Lockheed Martin's GPS satellite factory near Denver.

Lockheed Martin is on contract with the Defense Department to build 10 GPS 3 satellites — two of which have launched — and up to 22 upgraded GPS 3F-series satellites.

The Lockheed Martin-built GPS 3 SV03 satellite mounted atop the rocket is the third member of an upgraded generation of GPS navigation spacecraft, featuring higher-power signals that are more resilient to jamming, and additional broadcast frequencies to make the GPS network more interoperable with other navigation satellite fleets.

Запуск ракеты был осуществлен в 16:10 по американскому времени (23:10 мск) с 40-го стартового комплекса на космодроме на мысе Канаверал (штат Флорида).

Космический аппарат GPS III весом 3,8 тонны станет очередным элементом в планируемой орбитальной группировке из 32 спутников глобального позиционирования третьего поколения. Эти аппараты постепенно должны будут заменить собой устаревшие спутники, которые в настоящее время обеспечивают сигнал GPS по всему миру.

Спутники GPS III имеют большую мощность сигнала, позволяют определять местоположение гражданских объектов в три раза точнее, чем используемые в настоящее время спутники, у которых она составляет от 3 до 10 метров. Точность определения местоположения военных объектов будет еще выше.
       При этом GPS III располагает значительно улучшенными возможностями по борьбе с помехами в сравнении с более ранними аппаратами. Они будут в восемь раз более защищенными от подавления противниками США.

В настоящее время услугами системы GPS, оператором которой являются ВВС США пользуются более 4 млрд человек в мире.

Созданием новых спутников занимается корпорация Lockheed Martin. Стоимость одного аппарата оценивается в $577 млн. Срок эксплуатации спутника нового поколения составляет 15 лет.

Первые 10 аппаратов GPS III в версии Space Vehicle (Block IIIA) запустят до 2023 года включительно, остальные 22 в версии Follow On (Block IIIF) начнут размещать на орбите с 2025 по 2034 годы. Обновляемая система полнофункционально заработает не ранее чем в 2022 году в связи с задержкой в модернизации наземных систем управления спутниками.

Первый спутник GPS III был выведен на орбиту 23 декабря 2018 года с помощью ракеты-носителя Falcon 9 компании SpaceX, которая выиграла тендер на запуск пяти из первых шести аппаратов данного типа.

DENVER, June 30, 2020 /PRNewswire (http://www.prnewswire.com/)/ -- After a successful launch this afternoon, the third Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT)-built GPS III satellite is now headed to orbit under its own propulsion. The satellite has separated from its rocket and is using onboard power to climb to its operational orbit, approximately 12,550 miles above the Earth.

GPS III Space Vehicle 03 (GPS III SV03 (https://c212.net/c/link/?t=0&l=en&o=2845940-1&h=3417998078&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Flockheedmartin%2F38667516981%2Fin%2Falbum-72157625171465765%2F&a=GPS+III+SV03)) is responding to commands from U.S. Space Force and Lockheed Martin engineers in the Launch & Checkout Center at the company's Denver facility. There, they declared rocket booster separation and satellite control about 90 minutes after the satellite's 4:10 p.m. EST launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

"In the coming days, GPS III SV03's onboard liquid apogee engines will continue to propel the satellite towards its operational orbit," said Tonya Ladwig, Lockheed Martin's Acting Vice President for Navigation Systems. "Once it arrives, we'll send the satellite commands to deploy its solar arrays and antennas, and prepare the satellite for handover to Space Operations Command."

After on-orbit testing, GPS III SV03 is expected to join the GPS constellation – including GPS III SV01 and SV02, which were declared operational in January and April – in providing positioning, navigation and timing signals for more than four billion military, civil and commercial users.

GPS III also continues the Space Force's plan to field M-Code, a more-secure, harder-to-jam and spoof GPS signal for our military forces. GPS III SV03 brings the number of M-Code enabled satellites to 22 in the 31-satellite GPS constellation.

GPS III SPACE VEHICLE 03 MISSION

On Tuesday, June 30th at 4:10 p.m. ET, 20:10 UTC, SpaceX's Falcon 9 successfully lifted off, carrying the Space Force's GPS III Space Vehicle 03 mission from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Following stage separation, SpaceX landed Falcon 9's first stage on the "Just Read the Instructions" droneship, stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft deployed approximately 1 hour and 29 minutes after liftoff.

У нас и спутники ГСО умеют сразу на целевую орбиту. ЕМНИП крайний был Ангосат.

Так и у них это Дельты и Атласы проделывали неоднократно, но только в военных запусках. Все гражданские телекомы ползут туда сами, чтобы не засорять разгонными блоками окрестности ГСО.

Имеет. Не хватает. Двухразового с хватило как раз для обеспечения переходной 400х20200

2 of the 4 landing legs have already been retracted. The crane has been detached meaning that - once all legs are stowed - Octagrabber will be the only thing keeping Falcon 9 vertical.

Per visual reports from @derekiswise (https://twitter.com/derekiswise) and webcams: Whilst recovery operators were retracting the third landing leg on B1060, the cable snapped and the leg smacked back down onto the deck of the droneship.

Nobody was reportedly near the leg during the operation.

Cable reattached to the landing leg and it looks like it's raised ever-so-slightly off the deck.
