Paris, Cannes, November 19, 2019 – The all-electric KONNECT communications satellite built by Thales Alenia Space, the joint company between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), for the international operator Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) is now undergoing final preparation prior to being shipped to the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, for a launch planned mid-January 2020.

KONNECT will provide high-speed Internet services for markets in Africa and Western Europe. Offering total capacity of 75 Gbps, by next autumn this satellite will allow the operator to provide Internet access services for both companies and individuals at up to 100 Mbps. In Africa, it will also allow several users to share an Internet connection via public Wi-Fi hotspots; a service sold via coupons that can be paid on their mobile phones.

A pivotal part of Eutelsat's strategy to restore its growth, centered around connectivity, the KONNECT satellite will also play a lead role in bridging the digital divide in Africa and Europe. The next major step forward will come in 2022 with the introduction of the KONNECT VHTS (very high throughput satellite), also under construction by Thales Alenia Space.

The new KONNECT satellite features all-electric propulsion and operates in Ka-band. It is the first to use Thales Alenia Space's all-electric Spacebus NEO platform, developed under the Neosat Partnership Project conducted by the European and French space agencies (ESA and CNES).

KONNECT and GSAT-30 are readied for Arianespace's first Ariane 5 mission of 2020

The two satellite passengers for Arianespace's year-opening Ariane 5 mission of 2020 are undergoing checkout at the Spaceport in preparation for their flight to geostationary transfer orbit.

During activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility, GSAT-30 undergoes its fit-check with the Ariane 5 adapter (at left), while KONNECT is installed on a dolly for its pre-launch preparations (photo, right).

Riding in the upper position of Ariane 5's dual-payload dispenser system will be KONNECT, a new-generation high-throughput satellite that will deliver services across Europe and Africa – which was produced by Thales Alenia Space based on its Spacebus NEO platform.

India's GSAT-30 – which was designed, assembled and integrated by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) – will be the second passenger deployed during the mission. Built using an I-3K satellite platform, it is to provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services.

Both spacecraft currently are undergoing their preparation activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility.

The launch of KONNECT and GSAT-30 is designated Flight VA251 in Arianespace's mission numbering system – signifying the 251st liftoff of an Ariane-series vehicle from Europe's Spaceport in French Guianaю

Preparations for Arianespace's year-opening Ariane 5 mission enter the payload integration phase

Payload integration is underway for Arianespace's first mission of 2020 – designated Flight VA251 – which will orbit satellites at the service of two long-time partners using an Ariane 5 launch vehicle.

GSAT-30 (photo at left) is positioned on the adapter that will serve as its interface with Ariane 5 prior to installation atop the launch vehicle. At right, KONNECT is lowered for its integration on the SYLDA dispenser.

Recent activity at the Spaceport in French Guiana included initial steps in creating the dual-payload configuration, with Eutelsat's KONNECT satellite riding in the upper position. This involved installing the spacecraft atop Ariane 5's SYLDA dispenser system during activity inside the launcher's Final Assembly Building.

KONNECT will now be encapsulated by Ariane 5's protective fairing, completing the payload configuration's upper portion and readying it for positioning over co-passenger GSAT-30 once this spacecraft from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is installed atop the heavy-lift launcher.

One launcher, two satellites

Following Ariane 5's liftoff from the Spaceport on January 16, KONNECT will be released into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) first, followed by the separation of SYLDA – enabling GSAT-30's subsequent deployment to GTO.

KONNECT – which was produced by Thales Alenia Space – is a new-generation high-throughput satellite that will deliver services across Europe and Africa. Featuring all-electric propulsion and configured for operation in Ka-band, it is the first to use Thales Alenia Space's Spacebus NEO platform developed under the Neosat Partnership Project conducted by the European and French space agencies (ESA and CNES).

ISRO's GSAT-30 was built using an I-3K satellite platform, and is to provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services. It will have a liftoff mass of some 3,450 kg. and is to ensure continuity of service for India's INSAT 4A, positioned at 83 deg. East longitude.

Arianespace will confirm its leadership in the geostationary launch services market segment through this 107th Ariane 5 mission, to be performed as the company celebrates 40 years since its creation.

Flight VA251 will be performed from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 in Kourou to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

EUTELSAT KONNECT will be the 34th Eutelsat satellite launched by Arianespace since its first mission for this operator, which deployed EUTELSAT-1 F1 in 1983.

EUTELSAT KONNECT will offer total capacity of 75 Gbps and by next autumn will allow the operator to provide Internet access services for companies and individuals alike at up to 100 Mbps. The satellite will help to fight against the digital divide by bringing broadband Internet across 40 countries in Africa and 15 countries across Western Europe.

In Africa EUTELSAT KONNECT also will, through the establishment of public Wi-Fi terminals, share Internet access between several users, marketed in the form of coupons that can be paid via mobile phone.

To be installed as flight VA251's lower passenger, GSAT-30 is a telecommunications satellite designed and manufactured by ISRO. To be positioned at a longitude of 83° East, it will provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services over Indian mainland and Islands.

GSAT-30 is configured on ISRO's enhanced I-3K platform to provide communications services from geostationary orbit in C- and Ku-band for a lifetime greater than 15 years.

Since the launch of India's APPLE experimental satellite on Ariane Flight L03 in 1981, Arianespace has orbited 23 satellites and signed 24 launch contracts with the Indian space agency.

Final payload integration has begun for Arianespace's year-opening mission on January 16, with GSAT-30 now installed atop its Ariane 5 launcher at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

GSAT-30 is lowered for installed atop the Ariane 5's core stage section during activity at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

This satellite was positioned on the assembled Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage during activity inside the Spaceport's launch vehicle Final Assembly Building – placing it as the mission's lower passenger, to be released second in the flight sequence after its co-passenger, EUTELSAT KONNECT.

GSAT-30 was produced by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) using an I-3K platform, and is to provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services. It will have a liftoff mass of some 3,357 kg. and is to ensure continuity of service for India's INSAT 4A, positioned at 83 deg. East longitude.

Connecting EUTELSAT KONNECT

With GSAT-30 affixed to the Ariane 5, all is clear for EUTELSAT KONNECT's integration over it as part of the launcher's "upper composite" – which also includes the SYLDA dispenser system and protective payload fairing as a combined unit.

EUTELSAT KONNECT is a new-generation high-throughput satellite that will deliver services across Europe and Africa. Produced by Thales Alenia Space, it is the first to use the company's Spacebus NEO platform developed under the Neosat Partnership Project conducted by the European and French space agencies (ESA and CNES). EUTELSAT KONNECT will weight approximately 3,620 kg. at liftoff and is to operate from an orbital slot at 13 deg. East.

Next week's mission is designated Flight VA251 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, signifying the 251st launch of an Ariane-series vehicle.

Arianespace has identified a total of 12 flight opportunities from French Guiana this year using its full launcher family – which also includes Soyuz and Vega.

The first satellite developed under an initiative to help European industry deliver competitive satellites for the commercial telecommunications market has entered its final phase before launch.

Konnect will provide broadband services for Europe and Africa, and was built by Thales Alenia Space for Eutelsat, its commercial operator, under an ESA Partnership Project.

After a long flight on board an Antonov cargo plane from Nice airport in France, the satellite was delivered to the launch site in French Guiana inside its large transport container (https://www.esa.int/Applications/Telecommunications_Integrated_Applications/Huge_satellite_shipping_container_arrives_in_Cannes).

The satellite has completed its short and efficient launch campaign. Teams at the launch site have conducted all tests and inspections, and confirmed that sub-systems are flight ready.

The satellite was placed on the upper position of the secondary payload adapter and then within the fairing. These assembled parts have now been fitted on top of the launcher, during the last major step of the mechanical integration of the Ariane 5 rocket.

The satellite is now ready to be launched on 16 January, for the first Ariane launch of 2020, flight VA251.

After the launch of Konnect, the Spacebus Neo programme will continue to introduce further innovative technologies to the next satellites to be launched.

So far Thales Alenia Space has sold seven Spacebus Neo satellites. The next six missions will be: the French government's Syracuse-4; SES-17; another two Eutelsat missions called Konnect Very High Throughput Satellite and Eutelsat 10B, which will provide connectivity services for aviation and maritime transport; Satria, which will be operated by the Indonesian operator Pasifik Satelit Nusantara; and Amazonas Nexus for Hispasat, a Spanish operator, which will deliver high-capacity mobility services for aviation and maritime transport.

The Spacebus Neo product line is developed in the frame of ESA's programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) (https://artes.esa.int/) and the French PIA ("Programme d'Investissement d'Avenir"), in cooperation with ESA Member States, and managed jointly by ESA and the French Space Agency, CNES.

It has generated an exceptional return on investment to European industry and ESA Member States.

The Neosat programme comprises both Spacebus Neo by Thales Alenia Space and Eurostar Neo by Airbus. It includes development and in-orbit validation of the new satellite product lines for both companies, allowing the two European satellite prime integrators to deliver competitive satellites for the commercial market.

The two passengers are to be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit during a mission lasting approximately 38 minutes.

Ariane 5 reaches the launch zone for tomorrow's dual-satellite mission

Arianespace has delivered another Ariane 5 to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, positioning the vehicle for liftoff on January 16 with two satellite passengers on board: EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, Ariane 5 was transferred to the ELA-3 launch zone from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere its two passengers had been integrated as part of pre-flight preparations.

With the rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for Thursday's liftoff at the start of a 1-hour, 55-minute launch window scheduled to open at 6:05 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Sending satellites to GTO

For this 251st launch of an Ariane-series vehicle – designated Flight VA251 in Arianespace's numbering system – the payload lift performance to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) is approximately 7,888 kg. This combined total factors in EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30, plus the dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

EUTELSAT KONNECT – which was produced by Thales Alenia Space for Eutelsat – is riding in the upper position of Ariane 5's payload arrangement, to be released first in the flight sequence at 27 minutes following liftoff.

GSAT-30 was designed and manufactured by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and will be deployed from Ariane 5's lower passenger position 38 minutes into the flight – completing the mission.

A broadband communications satellite for Paris-based Eutelsat — built on a new Thales Alenia Space all-electric design with xenon plasma thrusters — and an Indian broadcasting spacecraft are fastened to the top of an Ariane 5 launcher for liftoff Thursday fr om French Guiana.

Liftoff is scheduled during a launch window opening at 4:05 p.m. EST (2105 GMT) and closing at 6 p.m. EST (2300 GMT) Thursday.

The mission will mark the 107th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since 1996, and the 251st flight of a launcher in the European Ariane family since 1979. It will be the first of up to 22 launches this year for Arianespace, the French launch services provider, using Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega boosters from launch sites in French Guiana, Kazakhstan and Russia.

After lifting off from the tropical space base on the northeastern coast of South America Thursday, the Ariane 5 will deliver the Eutelsat Konnect and GSAT 30 satellites to an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit ranging between 155 miles (250 kilometers) and 22,220 miles (35,761 kilometers), with an orbit tilted 6 degrees to the equator.

Separation of the two satellites from the Ariane 5 launcher's upper stage is planned around a half-hour after liftoff.

Each satellite will use its own propulsion to circularize its orbit at geostationary altitude more than 22,000 miles over the equator, wh ere their velocities will match the rate of Earth's rotation, giving each spacecraft a fixed geographic coverage zone.

The Eutelsat Konnect satellite is the largest of the two payloads on Thursday's mission.

Built by Thales Alenia Space, the Eutelsat Konnect spacecraft will provide broadband connectivity over Europe and Africa during a mission slated to last at least 15 years.

Eutelsat Konnect is the first spacecraft built on the new Spacebus Neo satellite bus, which was developed by Thales with funding from the European Space Agency and the French government, including the French space agency, CNES.

"Creating Spacebus Neo, a completely new product line, and in parallel meeting the schedule of the first satellite Konnect has been quite a challenge, which Thales Alenia Space and its consortium have brilliantly mastered," said Magali Vaissiere, director of ESA's telecommunications programs.

"This has only been possible through the successful cooperation between Thales Alenia Space and the agencies ESA and CNES, who have co-managed this project, the excellent coordination with Eutelsat, and the continued support of our European member states.

ESA helped fund development through the space agency's Neosat program, which aims to develop new European satellite designs with reduced cost and increased capabilities, ensuring Europe's large satellite manufacturing base remains competitive in the global market.

ESA's Neosat program supported the development of new satellite platforms by Thales and Airbus Defense and Space. Eutelsat, the largest commercial European satellite operator, agreed to be the first customer for both of the new satellite designs.

The Thales Spacebus Neo satellite platform will debut with Thursday's launch, and the Airbus Eurostar Neo platform will launch for the first time in 2021.

The Spacebus Neo platform features an all-electric propulsion system with xenon-fueled ion thrusters to perform all the satellite's post-launch maneuvers.

The low-thrust, high-efficiency xenon jets mean it will take several months for the Eutelsat Konnect satellite to reach its final operating station in geostationary orbit, but the all-electric propulsion system comes with major benefits.

"Eutelsat Konnect is the first satellite to use the Spacebus Neo electric propulsion platform from Thales Alenia Space," said Peter Newell, Eutelsat Konnect's program manager at Eutelsat. "Satellites using electric propulsion provide effective solutions for satellite operators, allowing them to maximize the payload capability of the satellite while maintaining a low overall spacecraft mass.

"As the first of its kind, there have many challenges during the development, qualification, manufacturing and test phases, but thanks to the skill and expertise of the Thales, Eutelsat and ESA/CNES teams, the satellite has been brought conception to today's launch in just four years, which is a great achievement."

The Eutelsat Konnect spacecraft, which rides in the upper position of the Ariane 5 launcher's payload bay, weighs 7,978 pounds (3,619 kilograms) at liftoff, significantly less than a similarly-capable communications satellite that used conventional chemical hydrazine fuel.

The Spacebus Neo satellite platform joins other all-electric geostationary satellite buses currently flying from other satellite manufactures, including Boeing, Maxar and Northrop Grumman.

The xenon propulsion package was developed by Thales teams in the United Kingdom, and the payload module comes from a facility in Toulouse, France. Final assembly of the Eutelsat Konnect satellite occurred at a Thales site in Cannes, France.

Eutelsat Konnect is expected to enter commercial service this fall after the slow, multi-month orbit-raising campaign.

The high-power satellite hosts a Ka-band communications payload with a total capacity of 75 gigabits per second, providing Internet services for individuals and companies in Europe and Africa. Eutelsat Konnect will also link with public WiFi hotspots in Africa to provide Internet service to mobile phones and other devices.

"Thanks to its 92 user beams with four deployable antennas, the satellite provides coverage to 15 countries in Europe and 45 countries in Africa," Newell said. "In bringing broadband Internet to Africa and Europe with state-of the-art satellite telecommunication technology, Eutelsat Konnect will make a major contribution in bridging the digital divide.

"Initially, Eutelsat Konnect will operate in both Europe and Africa combined, but thanks to the high flexibility... it will be possible in the future to reallocate all of the satellite capacity to the African market," Newell said.

After releasing the Eutelsat Konnect spacecraft, the Ariane 5's upper stage will re-orient itself for separation of GSAT 30, the smaller of the two payloads on Thursday's launch.

The 7,400-pound (3,357-kilogram) GSAT 30 spacecraft, built and operated by the Indian Space Research Organization, will replace the aging Insat 4A spacecraft, which launched in 2005 on a previous Ariane 5 mission.

GSAT 30 will operate from a position in geostationary orbit at 83 degrees east longitude over the equator.

"GSAT 30 will provide continuity of direct-to-home TV services from this slot, as well as digital satellite news-gathering and very small aperture terminal services," said K. Sivan, ISRO's chairmen. "The Ku-band transponders will provide services over the Indian mainland and islands.

"The satellite employs high-power amplifier and state-of-the-art antenna systems to meet the requirements of multiple users," Sivan said.

"The GSAT 30 communications payload is equipped with 12 C-band transponder and 12 Ku-band trapsonders," said D.K. Das, director of ISRO's Satellite Applications Center. "The C-band transponders are designed for two-way communications using VSAT terminals over a vast geographic region extending up to Australia in the east and Europe in the west."

The countdown officially commenced at 0942 GMT (5:42 a.m. EST), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2105 GMT (4:05 p.m. EST; 6:05 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends for 105 minutes.

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 began at 1132 GMT (6:32 a.m. EST).

Workers also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for today's launch was also be loaded into the rocket's computer.

After a weather status report, the launch team began the process to fuel the rocket shortly with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1627 GMT (11:27 a.m. EST). First, ground reservoirs and the rocket's helium tank were pressurized, then the fuel lines were chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It was expected to take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage commenced at 1737 GMT (12:37 p.m. EST).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine began at 1747 GMT (12:47 p.m. EST), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems was for 1950 GMT (2:50 p.m. EST).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison nearly two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers -- at Plus+3 minutes, 19 seconds. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 33 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,761 kilometers (22,220 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 6 degrees.

The release of the Eutelsat Konnect satellite will come first at Plus+27 minutes, 30 seconds.

Once Eutelsat Konnect is deployed, the Ariane 5 rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned at Plus+29 minutes.

GSAT 30 will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 38 minutes, 25 seconds.

Minus-40 minutes. The Ariane 5's first and second stages are fully loaded loaded with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Ariane Group's facility in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Ariane Group in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Ariane 5 orbits satellites to "bridge the digital divide" on Arianespace's first flight of the year

Arianespace opened its 2020 launch activity with a dual-satellite Ariane 5 mission from French Guiana that successfully placed EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 into geostationary transfer orbit.

The Ariane 5 for Flight VA251 departs the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone with its EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 satellite passengers.

Conducted from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch pad, today's mission delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 7,888 kg. EUTELSAT KONNECT was released first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 at 27 minutes after liftoff, followed 11 minutes later by GSAT-30.

Today's success – designated Flight VA251 – continued long relationships of trust between Arianespace and the mission's customers: Eutelsat and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

"For the first Ariane 5 launch of the year, our heavyweight vehicle has once more performed flawlessly," said Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël, who provided his post-flight comments from the Spaceport's mission control center. "Congratulations to all!"

Bridging the digital divide with EUTELSAT KONNECT

Arianespace's successful Flight VA251 marked the 251st flight of an Ariane-series launch vehicle.

EUTELSAT KONNECT – which was produced by Thales Alenia Space – is a new-generation high-throughput satellite that will help bridge the digital divide by bringing broadband Internet across 40 countries in Africa and 15 countries across Europe. In Africa, EUTELSAT KONNECT also will – through the establishment of public Wi-Fi terminals – share internet access between several users, marketed in the form of coupons that can be paid via mobile phone.

Featuring all-electric propulsion and configured for operation in Ka-band, EUTELSAT KONNECT is the first satellite to use Thales Alenia Space's Spacebus NEO platform, developed under the Neosat Partnership Project conducted by the European and French space agencies (ESA and CNES). It weighed an estimated 3,619 kg. at liftoff.

EUTELSAT KONNECT is the 34th Eutelsat satellite launched by Arianespace since its first mission for this operator. It also is the 163rd Thales Alenia Space-produced satellite orbited by the company to date.

Lofting GSAT-30 for India telecommunications

GSAT-30 was produced by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) using an I-3K platform, and is to provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services. It had an estimated mass of 3,357 kg. at liftoff and will ensure continuity of service for India's INSAT 4A, positioned at 83 deg. East longitude.

By operating GSAT-30, ISRO will – once again – use space to help bridge the digital divide in the Indian subcontinent as part of its ambitious space program. These objectives are to develop India by focusing on all types of space applications, including navigation, Earth observation, telecommunications and broadcasts of educational programs, while pursuing science research and planetary exploration.

GSAT-30 was the 24th ISRO satellite orbited by Arianespace and Ariane-series launchers, tracing the relationship back to India's APPLE small experimental communications spacecraft, lofted in 1981 by an Ariane 1 version.

Targeting a record mission pace

Today's success kicks off Arianespace's busy launch schedule in 2020, which targets a record mission count – with up to 12 opportunities identified from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana using Ariane 5, Soyuz or Vega; along with the maiden flights of Ariane 6 and Vega C; plus eight more from the cosmodromes at Baikonur and Vostochny.

Flight VA251 – first Arianespace mission of 2020 a success: EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 in orbit

For its year-opening flight of 2020, Arianespace successfully placed two communications satellites into geostationary orbit: EUTELSAT KONNECT for the operator Eutelsat; and GSAT-30 for ISRO, the Indian space agency.

The launch took place onboard Ariane 5, on Thursday, January 16 at 06:05 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana (South America).

With this latest launch, Arianespace continues to help reduce the digital divide worldwide, while confirming its leadership in the geostationary orbit launch market.

Today's launch, designated Flight VA251, was the 315th mission by the Arianespace launcher family and the 107th by an Ariane 5 version.

Following the launch, Arianespace Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Israël said: "As we enter the year of our 40th anniversary, Arianespace is targeting a record pace in 2020. It begins with this initial success of Ariane 50 at the service of two long-standing customers and partners: the French operator Eutelsat, and ISRO, the Indian space agency. The launch orbited EUTELSAT KONNECT, the first satellite based on the Spacebus NEO platform of Thales Alenia Space, developed with the support and expertise of ESA and CNES. EUTELSAT KONNECT will help reduce the digital divide in Europe and Africa; as will our second passenger on today's flight, GSAT-30, designed, manufactured and operated by ISRO to enhance communications on the Indian subcontinent. With EUTELSAT KONNECT's launch, Arianespace contributes to connectivity access and European innovation

The all-electric Ka-band EUTELSAT KONNECT satellite is the 34th Eutelsat relay platform to be launched by Arianespace since its initial mission for this operator in 1983. EUTELSAT KONNECT is the first satellite to use the Spacebus NEO platform from Thales Alenia Space. This project has been developed within the scope of the Neosat program set up by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the French CNES.

EUTELSAT KONNECT will offer total capacity of 75 Gbps. It will enable Eutelsat to provide Internet access services for companies as well as individuals at rates up to 100 Mbps. It will contribute to reducing the digital divide by bringing broadband connectivity to 40 countries in Africa and 15 countries in Europe.

In Africa, EUTELSAT KONNECT also will provide shared Internet access between several users based on the creation of public Wi-Fi terminals, with users able to buy coupons that can be paid via their mobile phones.

More than half of all Eutelsat satellites have been orbited by Arianespace. Having six more satellites booked with Arianespace, Eutelsat also is the first commercial customer to order an Ariane 6 launch.

EUTELSAT KONNECT is the 163rd satellite built by Thales Alenia Space to be launched by Arianespace. Five more satellites from this manufacturer currently are in Arianespace's backlog.

GSAT-30: Arianespace continues its collaboration with ISRO

GSAT-30 is the 24th Indian geostationary satellite to be launched by Arianespace. This mission once again illustrates the exceptional relationship between Arianespace and the Indian space agency, starting with the launch of the country's APPLE experimental satellite in 1981, using the third Ariane launcher on Flight L03.

Designed and built by ISRO, using the enhanced I-3K platform, it will deliver high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services to all of India, including islands, with a design life exceeding 15 years.

A year after the launch of GSAT-31, GSAT-30 will replace the Insat 4A satellite as ISRO continues to use space to bridge the digital divide on the Indian subcontinent, as part of its ambitious space program. This program calls on all types of space applications, including navigation, Earth observation, communications and the broadcast of educational programs, while also contributing to scientific research and planetary exploration.

Press Release: India's communication satellite GSAT-30 launched successfully

India's latest communication satellite GSAT-30 was successfully launched from the Spaceport in French Guiana during the early hours today.

The launch vehicle Ariane 5 VA-251 lifted off from Kourou Launch Base, French Guiana at 2:35 am IST carrying India's GSAT-30 and EUTELSAT KONNECT for Eutelsat, as scheduled.

After a flight lasting 38 minutes 25 seconds, GSAT-30 separated from the Ariane 5 upper stage in an elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.  

With a lift-off mass of 3357 kg, GSAT-30 will provide continuity to operational services on some of the in-orbit satellites. GSAT-30 derives its heritage from ISRO's earlier INSAT/GSAT satellite series and will replace INSAT-4A in orbit.

"GSAT-30 has a unique configuration of providing flexible frequency segments and flexible coverage. The satellite will provide communication services to Indian mainland and islands through Ku-band and wide coverage covering Gulf countries, a large number of Asian countries and Australia through C-band" ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan said.

Dr. Sivan also said that "GSAT-30 will provide DTH Television Services, connectivity to VSATs for ATM, Stock-exchange, Television uplinking and Teleport Services, Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) and e-governance applications. The satellite will also be used for bulk data transfer for a host of emerging telecommunication applications."

ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka took over the command and control of GSAT-30 immediately after its separation from the launch vehicle. Preliminary health checks of the satellite revealed its normal health.

In the days ahead, orbit-raising manoeuvres will be performed to place the satellite in Geostationary Orbit (36,000 km above the equator) by using its on-board propulsion system.

During the final stages of its orbit raising operations, the two solar arrays and the antenna reflectors of GSAT-30 will be deployed.  Following this, the satellite will be put in its final orbital configuration.  The satellite will be operational after the successful completion of all in-orbit tests.

Cannes, January 17, 2020 – The all-electric EUTELSAT KONNECT telecommunications satellite has been successfully launched by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America). EUTELSAT KONNECT was built by Thales Alenia Space, the joint company between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), acting as prime contractor for Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL). From geostationary orbit, this satellite will provide large-scale coverage of high-speed Internet markets across Africa and Europe.

Operational this autumn, EUTELSAT KONNECT will offer a throughput capacity of 75 Gbps, and provide high-speed Internet access up to 100 Mbps for both companies and individuals. In Africa, it will also be used in conjunction with public Wi-Fi terminals so that several users can share Internet access, which will be marketed as coupons that can be paid using a mobile phone.

Key to Eutelsat's growth strategy based on connectivity, EUTELSAT KONNECT will take a lead role in bridging the digital divide within Africa and Europe. The program will shift into a higher gear in 2022 with the presence of the EUTELSAT KONNECT VHTS (very high throughput satellite), currently under construction by Thales Alenia Space.

Featuring all-electric propulsion and operating in Ka-band, EUTELSAT KONNECT is the first satellite to use Thales Alenia Space's all-electric Spacebus NEO platform, developed within the scope of the Neosat project partnership set up by the European Space Agency (ESA) and its French counterpart CNES. The satellite weighed 3.6 metric tons at launch. It offers a design life exceeding 15 years.

Paris, 17 January, 2020 – The EUTELSAT KONNECT satellite was successfully launched into Geostationary Transfer Orbit by Arianespace using an Ariane 5 rocket that lifted off from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, at 9.05 pm Universal Time (10.05 pm CET) on January 16.

The separation of the all-electric satellite occurred after a 27-minute flight and the spacecraft systems checkout was successfully completed over a period of 3 hours.

Built by Thales Alenia Space, the EUTELSAT KONNECT communications satellite, features all-electric propulsion and operates in Ka-band. It is the first satellite to use Thales Alenia Space's all-electric Spacebus NEO platform, developed under the Neosat Partnership Project conducted by the European and French space agencies (ESA and CNES).

EUTELSAT KONNECT will assure full or partial coverage for up to 40 countries across Africa and 15 over Europe. GSAT-30 update

After the injection of GSAT-30 communication satellite into an elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) on January 17, 2020, all the three orbit raising manoeuvers have been completed successfully as planned using the satellite's propulsion system.
The cumulative duration of operation of the propulsion system for these manuoeuvres is 2 hours 29 minutes.

The satellite solar panels and antennas have been deployed and the satellite is placed in an orbit with a perigee (nearest point from Earth) of 35, 826 km and an apogee (farthest point from Earth) of 35,913 km with an inclination of 0.11 deg which is very close to its operational orbit.
