Kourou, French Guiana, June 21, 2019. The telecommunications satellite EDRS-C is the second node of the 'SpaceDataHighway' network (also known as EDRS). The SpaceDataHighway has arrived at the European launch site in Kourou, French Guiana. The EDRS-SpaceDataHighway is the European laser-based data relay system will establish a new standard in space-based communication. It is a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus Defence and Space.

OHB System AG was sel ected as the principal contractor for the development and manufacturing of the telecommunication satellite EDRS-C. EDRS-C will become part of the satellite constellation for the world's first "optical fibre in the sky" that is based on cutting-edge laser technology.

The satellite EDRS-C is based on OHB's proven SmallGEO satellite platform developed as part of ESA's programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) program. "We adjusted the satellite design in order to meet the special and demanding requirements of the optical payload and extended the modular TM/TC subsystem to allow operation in the S and Ka bands. In addition, we installed secure encryption electronics," explained Dr Stefan Voegt, EDRS-C project manager at OHB System AG.

The first major leg of a rather long journey to work

Securely stowed in a container, EDRS-C has completed the first legs of its journey to its destined place in space some 36,000 kilometres above Earth: On June 17th, the satellite was placed in the special air-conditioned container that protected the satellite during its journey from Munich to Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French-Guiana. Further containers were loaded with equipment (e.g. electrical and mechanical ground support equipment and many other tools) which the OHB experts will need to complete their work during the remaining weeks up to launch. Means of transportation was an Antonov-124 aircraft. After a stop-over at Cabo Verde, the Antonov touched down at Cayenne airport in French Guiana on the evening of June 19. The containers arrived at the European launch site in Kourou on June 20, 2019. Of course, some of the OHB engineers were on board the Antonov to accompany the precious freight to Kourou. Others arrived earlier to make preparations for a smooth entry and to unpack the satellite in the clean room at the launch site.

Testing continues

Over the past months, the satellite was thoroughly checked in the course of the comprehensive environmental test campaign – e.g. in a space simulation chamber, in vibration and acoustic laboratories and in a CATR facility. All this is to ensure that the satellite will withstand the stresses and strains that it will be subjected to during launch and the harsh conditions in space.

There is more testing planned for EDRS-C: "First of all, we want to make sure that our satellite survived the voyage well; that's why we will continue to carry out various tests" says Roberto Montedori from OHB System AG who is responsible for the EDRS-C launch site activities. "Accommodating our satellite on the launcher will be another very special moment for us prior to launch. We have a tight schedule until then, but we are familiar with the proceedings at the launch site and can rely on the experts here."

Leaving Earth for good in July

The satellite is scheduled for launch on 24th July 2019 on an Ariane 5. The satellite's operational position is at 31° East. The geostationary position allows data from LEO satellites equipped with dedicated laser terminals to be accessed by the end users in close to real time.

About EDRS-SpaceDataHighway

It will be a unique system of satellites in an orbit that makes them appear to be permanently "fixed" over a network of ground stations. The system is designed to relay data between Earth Observation satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) as well as drones and aircrafts and the EDRS satellites in geostationary orbit using innovative laser communication technology. It then sends the data down to ground stations based in Europe. For the inter-satellite link between LEO satellites and the EDRS satellites, laser communication terminals are used for high data rate requirements, while a set of Ka-band RF terminals is used for the high data rate links between the EDRS satellites and the ground stations.

Team effort

OHB developed and built the satellite under a contract with Airbus Defence and Space. Aboard the satellite is a data relay payload with a laser communications terminal for satellite-to-satellite links supplied by the German partner Tesat-Spacecom. In addition, a hosted payload HYLAS 3 was provided by Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA as a customer-furnished item to OHB. EDRS-SpaceData-Highway is supported by the German Space Administration at DLR with funding fr om the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal State of Bavaria. Three sister companies were involved in EDRS-C: OHB Sweden was in charge of the AOCS subsystem, LuxSpace contributed to the TT&R subsystem which transmits information on the conditions of vital satellite systems to the ground stations and MT Aerospace delivered the satellite structure panels.

SmallGeo – a versatile satellite platform

Further SmallGEO projects in the conventional telecommunications segment include Heinrich Hertz (in-orbit verification of numerous national scientific and technical innovations as well as satellite communications for the German federal armed forces). Europe's future fleet of weather satellites, the Meteosat Third Generation EUMETSAT satellites, is also based on the SmallGEO satellite platform.

The Intelsat 39 geosynchronous communications satellite has safely arrived at the Arianespace (http://www.arianespace.com/) launch base in Kourou, French Guiana, after completing final delivery checkouts at Maxar's Palo Alto, California manufacturing facility. Intelsat 39 is the 52nd satellite built by Maxar for our long-term customer, Intelsat (http://www.intelsat.com/). The Intelsat, Arianespace and Maxar teams in Kourou will now prepare the satellite for launch on an Ariane 5 rocket, which is currently scheduled for July 24.

Once it reaches its final destination at 62 degrees East, the satellite will provide broadband and video distribution services across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The satellite will also enhance mobile connectivity for aero, maritime and government users operating in the Indian Ocean region.
Intelsat 39 will replace the Intelsat 902 satellite, which was also built by Maxar and launched in 2001. By the time of its replacement by Intelsat 39, Intelsat 902 will have exceeded its expected 13-year design life by six years, or 45%.

Intelsat 39 is based on Maxar's decades-proven 1300-class (http://sslmda.com/html/1300_series_platform.php) platform, which offers high power, reliability and flexibility to support a broad range of applications and technology advances.

The satellite has both C-band and Ku-band transponders, and will use hybrid electric and chemical propulsion to reach its desired orbit, where it is designed to provide service for a minimum of 15 years. Once on-orbit, the satellite will maintain its position using all-electric propulsion, which provides efficiency for satellite operators by reducing launch mass while increasing spacecraft flexibility and performance.

Flight VA249: Arianespace will orbit Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C with Ariane 5

For its third flight with Ariane 5 this year, Arianespace will orbit two telecommunications satellites for long-term customers: Intelsat 39, for the operator Intelsat; and the EDRS-C satellite, based on a public–private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus.

Through this mission, Arianespace highlights its ability to be at the service of innovative satellite solutions for commercial and institutional needs.

Flight VA248 will be performed from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, August 2, 2019 in Kourou to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Intelsat 39 will be the 61st satellite launched by Arianespace for Intelsat since the first mission at its service in 1983. It will replace Intelsat 902 (launched by Arianespace in 2001) at 62 degrees East.

The Intelsat 39 telecommunication satellite is designed with both wide and high-powered steerable spot beams to meet the needs of broadband networking, video and government customers across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Indian Ocean region. The steerable spot beams provide flexibility within the payload and enable customers to rapidly and efficiently respond to shifts in geographic or application requirements.

The satellite features C-and Ku-band capabilities to provide additional scale for Intelsat's Flex managed service and enhance mobile connectivity for aero, maritime and government users operating across these regions.

Intelsat 39 was built by Maxar in Palo Alto, California.

The EDRS-C satellite is the second node of the SpaceDataHighway network. The SpaceDataHighway is the world's first "optical fiber" network in the sky based on cutting-edge laser technology. It will help to improve environmental and security monitoring, disaster response and crisis management.

Launched into a geostationary orbit at 31° East, EDRS-C will be able to connect low-orbiting observation satellites via laser at a distance up to 45,000 km., as well as intelligence UAVs or mission aircraft.

The SpaceDataHighway is a public–private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus, with the laser terminals developed by Tesat-Spacecom and Germany's DLR Aerospace Center. Airbus owns, operates and provides services for the SpaceDataHighway. The EDRS-C satellite platform is supplied by OHB System AG.

In addition, a hosted payload – HYLAS 3 – was provided by Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA as a customer-furnished item to OHB.

"В третий за этот год полет Ariane 5 Arianespace выведет на орбиту два телекоммуникационных спутника своих давних клиентов: Intelsat 39 оператора связи Intelsat и EDRS-C, основанный на государственно-частном партнерстве Европейского космического агентства (ЕКА) и Airbus", - говорится в сообщении для прессы.

Согласно опубликованному графику, окно запуска назначено на 16:30 - 18:51 по местному времени (22:30 - 00:51 мск). Ожидается, что 2 августа будет составлен отчет о готовности миссии, на основе которого будет приниматься решение о своевременном старте или его переносе.

Ранее запуск Ariane 5 с этими спутниками, запланированный изначально на 24 июля, был отложен в связи с неудачным запуском ракеты Vega. Она должна была вывести на орбиту военный спутник Falcon Eye 1 Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов (ОАЭ), но из-за сбоя в работе двигателя второй ступени не смогла выйти на расчетную высоту и упала в Атлантический океан.

Спутник Intelsat 39 призван обеспечивать широкополосный доступ в интернет, а также передачу видеосигнала для трансляций в Африке, Европе, Азии, а также на Ближнем Востоке. Он придет на смену Intelsat 902, который был выведен на орбиту в 2001 году. Оснащенный передатчиками C- и Ku- диапазонов, он расположится на 62 градусе восточной долготы.

Аппарат EDRS-C станет вторым звеном в системе космической связи SpaceDataHighway, разработанной Airbus Defence and Space. Она подразумевает оптическую передачу данных при помощи лазерного терминала со скоростью 1,8 гигабита в секунду.

The upper payload component – containing Intelsat 39 mounted on the SYLDA dispenser system, both of which are enclosed in an ogive-shaped fairing – is ready for installation atop Ariane 5.

Payload integration is underway for Arianespace's third Ariane 5 mission of 2019, which will orbit telecommunications satellites at the service of long-time customers: Intelsat 39, for global operator Intelsat; and EDRS-C, based on a public-private partnership between Airbus and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Recent activity at the Spaceport included initial steps in creating the dual-payload configuration, with Intelsat 39 riding in the upper position. This involved installing the relay platform atop Ariane 5's SYLDA dispenser system inside the launcher's Final Assembly Building.

Intelsat 39 – which was produced by Maxar Technologies – was then encapsulated by Ariane 5's protective fairing, completing the payload configuration's upper portion and readying it for positioning over EDRS-C once this spacecraft is installed atop the launcher.

Following Ariane 5's liftoff during the afternoon hours of August 6, Intelsat 39 will be released first into geostationary transfer orbit, to be followed by the separation of SYLDA – enabling EDRS-C's subsequent deployment to geostationary transfer orbit.

Final payload integration for Arianespace's Flight VA249 was performed in the Spaceport's Ariane 5 Final Assembly Building.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's upcoming mission from French Guiana is now fully-assembled following integration of its two satellite passengers: Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C – both of which will be delivered to geostationary transfer orbit on a flight scheduled for August 6.

Encapsulated in an ogive-shaped protective fairing, Intelsat 39 has been positioned atop its EDRS-C co-passenger – which was installed on the launcher's cryogenic core stage during previous activity inside the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for Ariane 5.

These successive integration steps enable a new series of preparation milestones to begin. They include tomorrow's launch readiness review, which will be followed by Ariane 5's August 5 rollout to the ELA-3 launch zone.

Liftoff is scheduled during a 2-hr., 21-min. launch window that opens August 6 at 4:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with the two spacecraft to be deployed to orbit on a flight lasting 33 minutes.

Intelsat 39: Faster, more efficient connectivity

Built by Maxar Technologies, Intelsat 39 is designed with both wide and high-powered steerable spot beams to meet the needs of broadband networking, video and government customers across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Indian Ocean region. The steerable spot beams provide flexibility within the payload and enable customers to rapidly and efficiently respond to shifts in geographic or application requirements.

The satellite features C-and Ku-band capabilities to provide additional scale for Intelsat's Flex managed service and enhance mobile connectivity for aero, maritime and government users operating across these regions.

Intelsat 39 will be the 61st Intelsat spacecraft launched on an Arianespace mission, continuing a partnership that extends back to 1983. The satellite will replace Intelsat 902 – lofted by Arianespace in 2011 – at an orbital position of 62 deg. East.

EDRS-C: Expanding the SpaceDataHighway

EDRS-C – based on a satellite platform supplied by OHB System – is the second node of the SpaceDataHighway, which is the world's first "optical fiber" network in the sky based on cutting-edge laser technology. Permanently fixed over a network of ground stations, the SpaceDataHighway will help improve environmental and security monitoring, disaster response and crisis management.

To be positioned at 31 deg. East, EDRS-C will be able to connect low-orbiting observation satellites via laser at a distance up to 45,000 km., as well as unmanned aerial vehicles or mission aircraft.

The SpaceDataHighway is a public–private partnership between Airbus and the European Space Agency (ESA), with the laser terminals developed by Tesat-Spacecom and Germany's DLR Aerospace Center. Airbus owns, operates and provides services for the SpaceDataHighway. EDRS-C will be the 132nd satellite launched by Arianespace at the service of Airbus, as well as its 52nd mission for ESA.

EDRS-C also carries a hosted payload – HYLAS 3 – which was provided by Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA as a customer-furnished item to OHB.

Arianespace's third Ariane 5 flight of 2019 has been given the "green light" for liftoff next week following today's launch readiness review, which was conducted at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

⁠This milestone confirmed that the launch vehicle and its dual-satellite payload – comprised of Intelsat 39, for global operator Intelsat; and EDRS-C, based on a public-private partnership between Airbus and the European Space Agency – are flight-ready, along with the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

The next steps for Ariane 5

With approval granted, Ariane 5 is cleared for Monday's rollout from its Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone. Liftoff will occur on August 6, during a 2-hr., 21-min. launch window that opens at 4:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Ariane 5 will deliver a total payload lift performance of approximately 10,661 kg. on the mission to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), which is designated Flight VA249. This total includes the two satellite passengers, plus the workhorse vehicle's dual-payload deployment system and integration hardware.

With Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C under its payload fairing, Ariane 5 approaches the launch pad to complete today's rollout.

Arianespace has delivered another Ariane 5 to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, positioning this workhorse vehicle for its August 6 liftoff with two telecommunications satellites: Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, Ariane 5 was transferred to the ELA-3 launch zone fr om the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere its two passengers were integrated as part of pre-flight preparations.

With the rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for a Tuesday liftoff at the start of a 2-hr., 21-min. launch window opening at 4:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

For this 105th flight of an Ariane 5, the payload lift performance to geostationary transfer orbit is approximately 10,661 kg. – a total that factors in Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C, plus the launch vehicle's dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

Delivering connectivity with Intelsat 39
Intelsat 39 – built by Maxar for global operator Intelsat – is the mission's upper passenger and will be released first in the flight sequence 29 min. after liftoff.

It was designed with both wide and high-powered steerable spot beams to meet the needs of broadband networking, video and government customers across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Indian Ocean region. The steerable spot beams provide flexibility within the payload and enable customers to rapidly and efficiently respond to shifts in geographic or application requirements.

The satellite features C-and Ku-band capabilities to provide additional scale for Intelsat's Flex managed service and enhance mobile connectivity for aero, maritime and government users operating across these regions.

EDRS-C: enhancing the SpaceDataHighway
EDRS-C – to be deployed from Ariane 5's lower passenger position – is the second node of the SpaceDataHighway network, a public-private partnership between Airbus and the European Space Agency. This spacecraft's separation will occur 33 min. after liftoff, completing the August 6 mission.

Permanently fixed over a network of ground stations, the SpaceDataHighway will help improve environmental and security monitoring, disaster response and crisis management. EDRS-C – based on a satellite platform supplied by OHB System – will be able to connect low-orbiting observation satellites via laser at a distance up to 45,000 km., as well as unmanned aerial vehicles or mission aircraft.

EDRS-C also carries a hosted payload – HYLAS 3 – which was provided by Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA as a customer-furnished item to OHB.

Париж. 6 августа. ИНТЕРФАКС - Тяжелая ракета-носитель Ariane 5 Европейского космического агентства (ЕSА) в ночь со вторника на среду должна вывести на орбиту два телекоммуникационных спутника, сообщила ее французская компания-разработчик Arianespace.

Для старта ракеты с космодрома "Куру" во Французской Гвиане запланировано временное "окно" с 22:30 мск во вторник до 00:51 мск в среду.

По сообщению компании, Ariane 5 выведет на орбиту спутники Intelsat 39 оператора связи Intelsat и EDRS-C ЕКА и компании Airbus.

Старт ракеты с европейскими спутниками первоначально планировался 24 июля, однако он был отложен в связи с неудачным пуском легкой французской ракеты-носителя Vega с разведывательным спутником Falcon Eye 1 (оптико-электронным спутником дистанционного зондирования Земли) Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов. Аппарат заменит исчерпавший свой ресурс Intelsat 902, выведенный на орбиту Земли в 2001 году.

Что касается спутника EDRS-C, то он станет вторым составным элементом первой системы оптической космической связи в Европе SpaceDataHighway. Ее разработчиком выступает аэрокосмическая компания Airbus Defence and Space. Система предназначена для оптической передачи данных с использованием лазерного терминала. A German-built satellite designed to relay data between other orbiting spacecraft and ground stations using laser beams is set for launch in tandem with an Intelsat communications craft Tuesday fr om Kourou, French Guiana, aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.

The second node in the European Data Relay Satellite, or EDRS, network is set for launch at 1930 GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT) Tuesday from the Guiana Space Center. The spacecraft, named EDRS C, will ride into orbit with the Intelsat 39 commercial communications satellite.

EDRS C will join the EDRS A node in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator. EDRS A is a hosted laser relay package on the commercial Eutelsat 9B communications satellite, which launched in 2016.

The EDRS network relays data and imagery from satellites in lower orbits, including the European Sentinel Earth observation fleet.

The EDRS system is similar to NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, or TDRS, network, which began operations in the 1980s to close communications coverage gaps for spacecraft passing between ground stations. But unlike the U.S. system, the European data relay satellites carry laser communications links to enable super-fast transfers of information and imagery.

The EDRS network can transmit up to 40 terabytes of data per day, at a rate of 1.8 gigabits per second.

The European Commission's Sentinel 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B Earth-imaging satellites are the anchor users of the European data relay system, which was developed in a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency and Airbus.

A new European laser terminal will launch to the International Space Station on a SpaceX resupply ship next year to be attached outside the station's Columbus module. The arrival of the laser system will enable the EDRS network to connect with the space station, opening the door for faster data links for experiments hosted on the orbiting research complex.

Airbus owns and operates the EDRS nodes in orbit, and sells access to the network — which it calls the "SpaceDataHighway" — on the commercial market. The EDRS control center is located in Ottobrunn, Germany.

"ESA is investing a chunk of money, and Airbus is putting some money on the table as well," said Michael Witting, ESA's EDRS project manager. "The logic behind it is ESA has covered most of the technical risks in the development phase, and Airbus has invested money, and they, in a sense, cover the market risk."

Airbus's four high-resolution Pléiades Neo optical reconnaissance satellites — the first two of which could launch in 2020 — will also link up with the EDRS network to transmit Earth imagery to the ground at high data rates.

Airbus announced earlier this year a cooperation agreement the SKY Perfect JSAT, a Japanese communications satellite operator, to co-finance design and development studies for a third EDRS node over the Asia-Pacific for launch before 2025.

The 7,023-pound (3,186-kilogram) EDRS C spacecraft was built by OHB in Bremen, Germany. The 14,550-pound (6.6-metric ton) Intelsat 39 communications satellite will join EDRS for the ride into space Tuesday.

An Ariane 5 rocket, operated by the French company Arianespace, will lift the two satellites into a highly elliptical, equatorial geostationary transfer orbit stretching 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth about a half-hour after liftoff.

The launch window for the Ariane 5 rocket extends until 2151 GMT (5:51 p.m. EDT) Tuesday.

Arianespace delayed the Ariane 5 mission from July 24 to clear the launcher of any faults related to the failure of a European Vega rocket July 10. The Vega rocket is a light-class launch vehicle — much smaller than the Ariane 5 — but the Avio, the Vega's prime contractor in Italy, also supplies components for the Ariane 5's two solid rocket boosters.

During a launch readiness review Friday, Arianespace officials approved the mission for launch Tuesday. The Ariane 5 rolled out of its final assembly building Monday at the spaceport in South America for the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) trip to the ELA-3 launch zone along dual rail tracks.

Countdown preps began early Tuesday, and Arianespace teams will oversee the loading of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into the two-stage Ariane 5 in the final hours before liftoff.

The mission launching Tuesday will mark the 105th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since 1996, and the third Ariane 5 flight this year.

The Ariane 5 launcher will deploy the Intelsat 39 spacecraft, which is riding in the upper position inside the rocket's fairing, at Plus+29 minutes, 9 seconds. After jettisoning a Sylda dual-payload adapter, the Ariane 5's upper stage will release the EDRS C satellite at Plus+33 minutes, 31 seconds.

The two payloads will use their own engines to maneuver from the Ariane 5's elliptical drop-off orbit into a circular geostationary orbit, wh ere their movement around Earth will match the rate of the planet's rotation.

Built by Maxar Technologies, Intelsat 39 will park itself over the equator at 62 degrees east longitude to begin a 15-year mission providing C-band and Ku-band services across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Intelsat 39 will replace the aging Intelsat 902 satellite at the 62 degrees east orbital location. Intelsat 902 launched on top of an Ariane 4 rocket from French Guiana in 2001.

Officials said Intelsat 39 will provide video and broadband services from its perch high above the equator. The new Intelsat spacecraft will also provide connectivity for airplanes and ships traveling in the Indian Ocean region.

Myanmar's Ministry of Transport and Communications will be one of the main users of Intelsat 39's capacity. Intelsat announced last year the the ministry signed a multi-year, multi-transponder agreement to use Intelsat 39 to provide broadband Internet services to government agencies, businesses and communities throughout Myanmar.

Minus-80 minutes. Today's mission is numbered VA249 in Arianespace's flight sequence. It's the 249th launch of an Ariane rocket since 1979, and the 105th flight of an Ariane 5 since its debut in 1996.

Liftoff is set for 1930 GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT; 4:30 p.m. French Guiana time).

The Intelsat 39 spacecraft, designed for video and broadband services across Africa, Europe and Asia,, is riding in the upper berth of the Ariane 5's payload fairing today. The EDRS C data relay satellite for Airbus and the European Space Agency will be in the lower position inside the fairing

The 14,550-pound Intelsat 39 satellite was assembled by Maxar in Palo Alto, California, and will use a hydrazine-fueled main engine to conduct most of the maneuvers necessary to reach a perch at geostationary altitude over the equator some 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 62 degrees east longitude following today's launch.

Intelsat 39 also carries electric thrusters to conduct the final maneuvers to reach geostationary orbit.

The EDRS C satellite, owned by Airbus and built by OHB, will head to a geostationary position at 31 degrees east longitude, where it will activate a laser relay system to link satellites in low Earth orbit with ground stations. The new spacecraft will join the European Data Relay System network, which supports Europe's Sentinel environmental satellite fleet, and will provide high-speed laser data links with the International Space Station beginning next year.

The EDRS C satellite also hosts a Ka-band communications payload named Hylas 3 for the British company Avanti. EDRS C's main propulsion is provided a liquid-fueled chemical rocket engine.

The EDRS C satellite will launch in the lower berth of the Ariane 5's dual-payload accommodation. Once the Intelsat 39 satellite deploys from the rocket, a Sylda adapter structure will jettison to reveal the roughly 7,023-pound (3,186-kilogram) EDRS C spacecraft for release.

The final countdown commenced at 0807 GMT (4:07 a.m. EDT), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 1930 GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT; 4:30 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends for 2 hours, 21 minutes.

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 began at 0857 GMT (4:57 a.m. EDT).

Workers have also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for today's launch was also be loaded into the rocket's computer.

The launch team began the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1452 GMT (10:52 a.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs and the rocket's helium tank were pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It was expected to take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage commenced at 1602 GMT (12:02 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine was scheduled to occur at 1612 GMT (12:12 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 1815 GMT (2:15 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison nearly two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers -- at Plus+3 minutes, 17 seconds. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 32 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,756 kilometers (22,218 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 4.5 degrees.

The release of the Intelsat 29 satellite will come first at Plus+29 minutes, 9 seconds.

Once Intelsat 39 is deployed, the Ariane 5 rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned at Plus+31 minutes, 6 seconds.

EDRS C will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 33 minutes, 31 seconds.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Ariane Group's facility in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Ariane Group in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Flight VA249: Ariane 5 lifts off from French Guiana

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launcher has lifted off from the Spaceport in French Guiana, carrying Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C – which will be deployed during a sequence lasting 33 minutes from liftoff to final separation.

Payload lift performance for today's mission to geostationary transfer orbit – designated Flight VA249 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – is approximately 10,660 kg. This total includes the two satellite passengers, plus the workhorse vehicle's dual-payload deployment system and integration hardware.

The Ariane 5 for Flight VA249 departs the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone with its Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C satellite passengers.

Arianespace marked another success for global telecommunications with launch of the Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C satellites, which were deployed to geostationary transfer orbit on its latest flight using a workhorse Ariane 5.

This mission – designated Flight VA249 in Arianespace's numbering system – was performed from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone in French Guiana, with Ariane 5 deploying its passengers during a mission lasting 33 minutes from liftoff to final separation.

A daytime liftoff for the ArianeGroup-supplied Ariane 5
The Ariane 5 lifted off as scheduled at 4:30 p.m. (local time in French Guiana), providing an excellent view of the launcher's initial trajectory during its daytime launch – including separation of the two solid propellant boosters at just over two minutes into the flight.

Ariane 5 – which is delivered to Arianespace by ArianeGroup as production prime contractor – delivered an estimated total lift performance of 10,260 kg. on today's mission, factoring in Intelsat 39 and EDRS-C, plus hardware for the dual-payload deployment system.

"With this third Ariane 5 of the year orbiting our fifth and sixth Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit satellites, our heavy-weight launcher reasserts its leading position on the GEO market," said Luce Fabreguettes, Arianespace's Executive Vice President – Missions, Operations & Purchasing. "Indeed, VA249 marks the 377th and 378th GEO satellites orbited by Arianespace! Let me congratulate all our partners who played their part in this success."

Another success for Intelsat
Deployed first in the flight sequence, Intelsat 39 is designed with both wide and high-powered steerable spot beams to meet the needs of broadband networking, video and government customers across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Indian Ocean region. The steerable spot beams provide flexibility within the payload and enable customers to rapidly and efficiently respond to shifts in geographic or application requirements.

Built by Maxar Technologies, the satellite features C-and Ku-band capabilities to provide additional scale for Intelsat's Flex managed service and enhance mobile connectivity for aero, maritime and government users operating across these regions.

Intelsat 39 is the 61st Intelsat spacecraft launched on an Arianespace mission, continuing a partnership that extends back to 1983. The satellite will replace Intelsat 902 – lofted by Arianespace in 2011 – at an orbital position of 62 deg. East.

Expanding the SpaceDataHighway
EDRS-C – released next in the flight sequence, four minutes after Intelsat 39 – is the second node of the SpaceDataHighway, which is the world's first "optical fiber" network in the sky based on cutting-edge laser technology. Permanently fixed over a network of ground stations, the SpaceDataHighway will help improve environmental and security monitoring, disaster response and crisis management.

Based on a platform supplied by OHB System, EDRS-C will be able to connect low-orbiting observation satellites via laser at a distance up to 45,000 km., as well as unmanned aerial vehicles or mission aircraft – operating from an orbital position at 31 deg. East.

The SpaceDataHighway is a public–private partnership between Airbus and the European Space Agency (ESA), with the laser terminals developed by Tesat-Spacecom and Germany's DLR Aerospace Center. Airbus owns, operates and provides services for the SpaceDataHighway. EDRS-C was the 132nd satellite launched by Arianespace at the service of Airbus.

EDRS-C also carried a hosted payload – HYLAS 3 – which was provided by Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA as a customer-furnished item to OHB. It is this operator's fourth satellite to be launched by Arianespace.

Ariane 5 by the numbers
As Arianespace's third Ariane 5 launch in 2019, Flight VA249 follows the company's other heavy-lift missions performed this year on February 5 (carrying Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1/Hellas Sat 4 and GSAT-31) and June 20 (T-16 and EUTELSAT 7C).

Flight VA249 also marked the 249th launch of an Ariane-series vehicle overall, and the 105th using Ariane 5.

Arianespace has successfully orbited two geostationary telecommunications satellites: Intelsat 39 for the international operator Intelsat, and EDRS-C for Airbus, as part of a public-private partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA).

The launch took place on August 6, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. (local time) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America).

With this third successful Ariane 5 mission in 2019, Arianespace continues to prove its ability to meet the requirements of today's most innovative players in both the commercial and institutional markets.

Arianespace orbits Intelsat 39 for Intelsat, a partner since 1983

Arianespace: a catalyst for innovative satellite solutions serving Europe

The EDRS-C satellite is the second node in the SpaceDataHighway network. Based on state-of-the-art laser technology, EDRS, the SpaceDataHighway is the first fiber-optic network in space. Supported by a public-private partnership between Airbus and ESA, it will help improve environmental monitoring and security services, disaster response and crisis management. The European commission will be a key customer of the EDRS system at the benefit of the Copernicus program. Once again, Arianespace has fulfilled its primary mission of offering independent access to space for Europe's flagship programs.

The SpaceDataHighway is the most sophisticated laser communications network ever designed. From a position in geostationary orbit, it relays data collected by observation satellites to Earth in near real time, thus tripling the volume of data, images and videos transmitted by these satellites and also being capable of reprogramming their mission plan at any given moment in just a few minutes.

The laser terminals were designed by Tesat-Spacecom and Germany's DLR aerospace research center. Airbus owns, operates and services the SpaceDataHighway. The EDRS-C satellite platform is supplied by OHB System AG, while the HYLAS 3 hosted payload was provided by the operator Avanti Communications under a contract with ESA.

EDRS-C is the 132nd satellite launched by Arianespace for Airbus, as well as the 26th satellite using an OHB platform and the fourth Avanti payload to be launched by Arianespace.

EDRS-C является частью совместного проекта Европейского космического агентства и корпорации Airbus по космической лазерной связи. После успешного отделения спутников от головной части ракеты управление ими передано компаниям-владельцам.

"Новая миссия Ariane 5 блистательно завершена", - подчеркнула, выступая в центре управления полетом исполнительный вице-президент корпорации Arianespace Люс Фабрегетт. Она сообщила также, что корпорация Arianespace заключила с Airbus контракты в целом на вывод на орбиты 21 аппарата.

Нынешний пуск ракеты Ariane 5 стал третьим в этом году для данного носителя и седьмым по счету, проведенным "Арианспейс" из Гвианского космического центра.

Москва. 6 августа. INTERFAX.RU - Тяжелая ракета-носитель Ariane 5 Европейского космического агентства (ЕSА) во вторник успешно вывела на орбиту два телекоммуникационных спутника, сообщила ее французская компания-разработчик Arianespace.

Запуск был осуществлен в 22:30 мск с космодрома "Куру" во Французской Гвиане. Это уже третий пуск Ariane 5 в текущем году.

По сообщению компании, через 33 минуты после старта Ariane 5 вывела на орбиту европейские спутники Intelsat 39 оператора связи Intelsat и EDRS-C ЕКА и компании Airbus. Стартовая масса выведенного ракетой на орбиту груза составила 6,6 тонн.

Спутник Intelsat 39, оснащенный передатчиками C- и Ku- диапазонов, предназначен для обеспечения широкополосного доступа в интернет и спутникового телевещания в Африке, Европе, на Ближнем Востоке и в Азии. Он будет размещен на 62-м градусе восточной долготы. Аппарат заменит исчерпавший свой ресурс Intelsat 902, выведенный на орбиту Земли в 2001 году.

Что касается спутника EDRS-C, то он станет вторым составным элементом первой системы оптической космической связи в Европе SpaceDataHighway. Ее разработчиком выступает аэрокосмическая компания Airbus Defence and Space. Система предназначена для оптической передачи данных с использованием лазерного терминала. Система EDRS может передавать примерно около 50 терабайт данных ежедневно со скоростью до 1,8 гигабит в секунду.

Он был отложен в связи с неудачным пуском легкой французской ракеты-носителя Vega с разведывательным спутником Falcon Eye 1 (оптико-электронным спутником дистанционного зондирования Земли) Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов. Bremen/ Kourou, August 06, 2019. The telecommunications satellite EDRS-C, which is the second node of the SpaceDataHighway system (also known as European Data Relay System, EDRS), lifted off from the European Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana at 21:30 CEST on August 06, 2019. The 3.2 ton satellite was engineered and manufactured by space systems specialist OHB System AG, a subsidiary of listed company OHB SE. It separated from the Ariane 5 launch vehicle on schedule after an ascent lasting about 30 minutes. A few minutes later, the EDRS-C satellite transmitted its first "signs of life" from space.

"I would like to thank Airbus and ESA for the trust they have placed in OHB and all those involved at OHB as well as our many subcontractors for their valuable contributions. I am eagerly awaiting the day on which our second SmallGEO satellite goes into operation and supplements the SpaceDataHighway," said Guy Perez, company CTO and member of the Management Board of OHB System AG responsible for telecommunications.

Europe's laser-based data relay system is being implemented as a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus. A constellation of geostationary satellites will be linked to a network of ground stations and, using innovative laser communication technology, will receive data from Earth observation satellites from lower orbits and relay it to ground stations in Europe, in near real-time and at a rate of 1.8 Gbit/s. Specifically designed for optical communications, the EDRS-C satellite developed, manufactured and tested by OHB on the basis of the SmallGEO platform forms the second node of the system. It also incorporates the HYLAS 3 Ka-band payload delivered to OHB System AG by ESA on behalf of Avanti Communications as a customer-furnished item.

OHB's contractual partners include international suppliers and service providers as well as other OHB Group companies. The ESA EDRS programme is being supported by the German Space Administration at DLR (German Aerospace Center), which has received funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Bavaria state government for the development of the system.

Kourou, French Guiana, at Europe's spaceport the EDRS-C satellite is being prepared for launch. Soon this second node of the European Data Relay system will join the EDRS-A node already in orbit, as the first dedicated EDRS satellite. EDRS has been designed to enable fast and reliable optical data transfer from low earth orbiting satellites to the ground. To achieve this the EDRS system uses state-of-the art laser link communication terminals and in combination with the longer data transmission offered EDRS, much more data can be transferred to the ground in Quasi Real Time, thus creating a real SpaceDataHighway

The second satellite in the European Data Relay System has reached its intended orbit and completed its in-orbit tests.

Dubbed the "SpaceDataHighway" by its commercial operator Airbus, EDRS uses innovative laser technology to enable Earth-observation satellites to deliver their information to users on the ground in near real-time, accelerating responses to emergency situations and spurring the development of new services and products.

EDRS-C is the second satellite in the system and was launched on 6 August.

After being delivered into its initial orbit by an Ariane 5 launcher, EDRS-C made its way to its final geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometres above Earth through five liquid apogee engine burns and a few relocation manoeuvres.

It has been thoroughly tested to ensure that all its components are operating as expected.

Control of the satellite has now been handed over to Airbus. In the coming months, the performance of its laser communication terminal will be fine-tuned as part of the nominal test sequence. To do so, several links are scheduled with the Copernicus programme's four Sentinel Earth observation satellites.

Commercial service is expected to begin in the spring.

The satellite also hosts a commercial payload operated by British satellite operator Avanti that is about to start delivering communications services.

EDRS is a public–private partnership between ESA and Airbus as part of ESA's efforts to federate industry around large-scale programmes, stimulating technology developments to achieve economic benefits.

The first satellite in the EDRS network, EDRS-A, was launched in January 2016.

Since then it has transmitted 1.7 petabytes of data, equivalent to binge watching almost 20 000 ultra high definition 4k films 24 hours a day for nearly four-and-a-half years.

The data was transmitted via almost 30 000 optical inter-satellite links established with the Copernicus programme's four Sentinel Earth observation satellites.
