NEW DELHI: India is se t to get another 'eye in the sky' as Indian Space Research Organisation (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/ISRO) (Isro) will launch its latest radar imaging satellite (Risat-2BR1) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on May 22.

Risat-2BR1 is much more advanced than the previous Risat-series satellite. "Its launch is due on May 22. Though the new satellite looks same as the old one from outside, its configuration is different from the earlier one launched. The new satellite, therefore, has enhanced surveillance and imaging capabilities," a source in Isro told TOI. Risat's X-band synethic aperture radar (SAR) possesses day-night as well as all-weather monitoring capability. The radar can even penetrate clouds and zoom up to a resolution of 1 metre (means it can distinguish between two objects separated by 1 m distance).

"The Risat satellite can take images of a building or an object on the earth at least 2 to 3 times a day," the source said. Therefore, it can help keep an eye on the activities of jihadi terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and infiltrators at terror launchpads along the LoC.

The new imaging satellite will boost all-weather surveillance capabilities of Indian security forces and will help detect any potential threat around the Indian borders. As the satellite can also track hostile ships at sea, it can be used to keep a hawk-eye on Chinese naval vessels in the Indian Ocean and Pakistani warships in the Arabian Sea. The images from old Risat-series satellites were earlier used to plan the surgical strike in 2016 and the air strike on a Jaish camp in Pakistan's Balakot this year. Risat also enhanced Isro's capability for disaster management applications.

After the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008, Risat-2 satellite programme took priority over Risat-1 because of the advanced radar system, manufactured in Israel, and was launched in April 20, 2009 to boost surveillance capabilities of security forces. From 536km altitude, the satellite monitors Indian borders 24x7 and helps security agencies keep an eye on infiltrators.

The synethic aperture radar uses the motion of the radar antenna over a target region to provide finer spatial resolution than conventional beam-scanning radars. The distance the SAR satellite travels over a target in the time taken for the radar pulses to return to the antenna creates the large synthetic antenna aperture. Typically, the larger the aperture, the higher the image resolution will be, regardless of whether the aperture is physical (a large antenna) or synthetic (a moving antenna) - this allows SAR to create high-resolution images with comparatively small physical antennas.

New Delhi: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch an advanced Radar Imaging Satellite (Risat-2BR1) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on May 22. The configuration of the new satellite is different from the one launched earlier.

The latest Risat-2BR1 comes with enhanced surveillance and imaging capabilities, stated a report. For instance, the X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) of the satellite can monitor in all-weather and both in day and night time. Further, the satellite's radar can distinguish two objects that are 1 m apart and can even penetrate clouds.

The RISAT 2BR1 will be launched on one of the variants of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket, stated sources. The rocket that would carry RISAT 2BR1 is designated as PSLV-C46 as per ISRO's numbering system and will blast off from the first launch pad at the country's rocket port in Sriharikota. ...

PSLV-C46 mission on 22nd May 2019 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR

PSLV-C46 which is the 48th mission of PSLV, will launch RISAT-2B, a Radar imaging earth observation satellite, from the First Launch Pad (FLP) of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. The launch is tentatively scheduled at 0527 hrs IST on May 22, 2019, subject to weather conditions.

PSLV-C46 is the 14th flight of PSLV in 'core-alone' configuration (without the use of solid strap-on motors). This will be the 72nd launch vehicle mission from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota and 36th launch from the First Launch pad.

RISAT-2B will be placed into an orbit of 555 km at an inclination of 37 degree.

As done in PSLV-C45 launch, ISRO has also made provision for public to view the launch from recently opened Viewer's gallery at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. Online registration for the same will start 5 days before the launch.

భారత అంతరిక్ష పరిశోధన సంస్థ (ఇస్రో) మరో భారీ శక్తివంతమైన భూ పరిశీలన ఉపగ్రహ ప్రయోగానికి సన్నాహం చేస్తోంది. శ్రీ పొట్టి శ్రీరాముల నెల్లూరు జిల్లాలోని శ్రీహరికోటలోని భారత అంతరిక్ష ప్రయోగ కేంద్రం సతీష్ థావన్ స్పేస్ సెంటర్ (షార్) నుంచి ఈ నెల 22న పీఎస్‌ఎల్‌వీ-సీ 46 రాకెట్ ప్రయోగం చేపట్టేందుకు ఇస్రో శాస్తవ్రేత్తలు సర్వం సిద్ధం చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ రాకెట్ ద్వారా రోదసీలోకి పంపే రీశాట్-2బి ఉపగ్రహం ఆదివారం బెంగళూరు నుంచి అత్యంత భారీ భద్రత నడుమ రోడ్డుమార్గాన షార్‌కు చేరింది. 300కిలో బరువు గల ఈ ఉపగ్రహాన్ని వాతావరణ స్థితి గతులను, భూ పరిశీలన నిమిత్తం ఇస్రో రూపొందించి పీఎల్‌ఎల్‌వీ-సీ 46 రాకెట్ ద్వారా కక్ష్యలోకి పంపనున్నారు. భారత సైనిక రంగానికి ఈ ఉపగ్రహం విలువైన సేవలు అందించనుంది. ఇప్పటికే షార్‌లోని ప్రథమ ప్రయోగ వేదిక వద్ద రాకెట్ మూడు దశల అనుసంధాన పనులను శాస్తవ్రేత్తలు పూర్తి చేశారు. సోమవారం నుంచి రాకెట్‌లోని నాలుగో దశ చివరిభాగంలో ఉపగ్రహాన్ని అమర్చి రాకెట్‌ను ప్రయోగానికి సిద్ధం చేయనున్నారు. ప్రయోగానికి సంబంధించిన మిషన్ రెడీనెష్ రివ్యూ సమావేశం (ఎంఆర్‌ఆర్) ఈ నెల 18న లేదా 19న షార్‌లో జరగనుంది. భారత కాలమానం ప్రకారం ఈ నెల 22న తెల్లవారు జామున 5:27గంటలకు షార్‌లోని మొదటి ప్రయోగ వేదిక నుంచి పీఎస్‌ఎల్‌వీ రాకెట్ నింగిలోకి ఎగరనుంది. ఇప్పటికే రీశాట్ సిరీస్ సంబంధించి రీశాట్-1, రీశాట్-2. స్కాట్‌శాట్ మూడు ఉపగ్రహాలను ఇస్రో విజయవంతంగా ప్రయోగించింది. రీశాట్-2బి సిరీస్‌లో నాలుగోవది కావడం విశేషం. ఎంతో శక్తిమైన ఈ ఉపగ్రహంలో అద్యాధునికి సాంకేతిక పరిజ్ఞానం గల కెమెరాను అమర్చనున్నారు. ఇది భూమి మీద జరిగే మార్పులను, ప్రకృతి వైపరిత్యాలు సంబవించినప్పుడు హై రిజుల్వేషన్ కూడిన ఛాయ చిత్రాలను తీసి పంపే విధంగా రూపకల్పన చేశారు. భూమికి 555కి.మీ దూరంలో సూర్యనువర్తమాన కక్ష్యలోకి ఉపగ్రహాన్ని పంపనున్నారు. ఇప్పటి వరకు షార్ నుంచి 47పీఎస్‌ఎల్‌వీ ప్రయోగాలు చేపట్టారు. పీఎస్‌ఎల్‌వీ సిరీస్‌లో ఇది 48వది కావడం విశేషం.

Ученые ISRO готовятся к пуску ракеты PSLV-C46 22 мая из Индийского космического центра имени Сатиша Дхавана (SDSC SHAR) в Шрихарикоте, округ Неллор. Эта ракета отправит в космос спутник RISAT-2B, который в воскресенье под самой большой охраной был доставлен на космодром по автодороге из Бангалора. Ракета PSLV-C46 должна вывести на орбиту спутник массой 300 кг, предназначенный для изучения погодных условий и наблюдения за земной поверхностью. RISAT представляет серию из спутников RISAT-1 и RISAT-2. ISRO ранее успешно запустила три спутника серии. RISAT-2B - четвертый в серии RISAT. Спутник оснащен мощной высокотехнологичной камерой. Камера разработана для получения высококачественных снимков поверхности Земли для применения в землепользовании или при стихийных бедствиях. Спутник должен быть выведен на орбиту высотой 555 км. К настоящему моменту с космодрома в Шрихарикоте было произведено 47 пусков ракет серии PSLV. Предстоящий пуск должен стать 48-м для ракет серии PSLV.

An Indian satellite designed to collect all-weather, day-and-night radar imagery for military and intelligence authorities is scheduled for launch Wednesday on top of a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.

The RISAT 2B radar imaging satellite is mounted atop the Indian PSLV in preparation for liftoff at 0000 GMT Wednesday (7 p.m. EDT Tuesday) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, India's launch base on the country's southeastern coast with the Bay of Bengal.

Launch preparations Tuesday were running smoothly, with final countdown activities and fueling underway, according to the Indian Space Research Organization. The PSLV's second and fourth stages, which burn a mix of liquid propellants, were being filled Tuesday. The PSLV's first and third stages burn pre-packed solid propellants.

The launch, which is timed for 5:30 a.m. local time in India, will mark the 48th flight of a PSLV since 1993, and the 14th mission to use the PSLV's "Core Alone" configuration without any strap-on solid rocket boosters. It will also be the third PSLV launch of the year.

After firing off its launch pad on Sriharikota Island, located around 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the Indian coastal city of Chennai, the PSLV will heard toward the southeast. The PSLV's first stage, producing more than a million pounds of thrust at maximum power, will burn out and jettison nearly two minutes after liftoff.

A liquid-fueled Vikas engine on the rocket's second stage will fire next, followed by separation of the PSLV's two-piece, clamshell-like payload fairing at T+plus 2 minutes, 57 seconds. After second stage shutdown and separation, the PSLV's third stage solid rocket motor will ignite at T+plus 4 minutes, 23 seconds, for a nearly two-minute burn.

Following a brief coast period, the PSLV's fourth stage will ignite at T+plus 9 minutes, 34 seconds. Powered by two liquid-fueled thrusters, the fourth stage will fire more than five minutes to inject the RISAT 2B satellite into a 346-mile-high (557-kilometer) orbit, inclined 37 degrees to the equator.

Separation of the RISAT 2B payload is scheduled for T+plus 15 minutes, 29 seconds, to conclude the launch sequence.

Designed for a five-year mission, RISAT 2B carries an X-band radar imaging instrument capable of peering through clouds and darkness to resolve structures and features on Earth's surface. Earth-looking optical telescopes are inhibited by cloudy weather, and only produce imagery during daytime.

The satellite was developed by ISRO — the Indian space agency — and weighs approximately 1,355 pounds (615 kilograms) at launch. RISAT 2B's dish-shaped radar antenna, folded up to fit inside the rocket's payload compartment, will be unfurled after the satellite arrives in space.

According to an information kit released by ISRO, RISAT 2B will provide imagery to support applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management.

Orbiting radars can also detect features, such as camouflaged military assets, on the ground that can escape detection with optical Earth observation satellites. The enhanced observing capability of radar satellites makes them useful for military and intelligence agencies.

The orbit selected for the RISAT 2B satellite does not provide global radar observation coverage, but it offers regular passes over Indian territory and neighboring Pakistan, a longtime strategic rival to India in the region.

At least four Indian radar observation satellites are currently scheduled for launch this year, beginning with RISAT 2B. The first in a new generation of high-resolution optical surveillance satellites, known as Cartosat 3, will launch on a PSLV mission as soon as June, according to Indian news reports.

RISAT 2B is the first Indian radar satellite to launch since 2012.

The predecessor RISAT 2 satellite has been in space since 2009, and remains operational, according to the Hindu, an English-language Indian news paper. RISAT 2's X-band radar was supplied by Israel.

The RISAT 1 Earth-imaging craft was launched in 2012 with an Indian-produced C-band radar, and is no longer collecting data, the Hindu reported.

An Indian rocket fired into space Wednesday with a high-power radar imaging satellite designed to peer through clouds and darkness to resolve signs of pollution, natural disasters and foreign military movements.

The 145-foot-tall (44.4-meter) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle lifted off with more than a million pounds of thrust at 0000 GMT Wednesday (8 p.m. EDT Tuesday) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, a spaceport on India's southeastern coast with the Bay of Bengal.

The launcher's solid-fueled first stage steered the rocket on a southeasterly course from the coastal space base, propelling the PSLV into a clear morning sky a few minutes before sunrise.

Liftoff occurred at 5:30 a.m. local time in India, marking the country's third space launch of the year. Wednesday's launch, designated PSLV-C46, was the 48th flight of India's workhorse PSLV since its debut in 1993.

After a two-minute firing, the PSLV's first stage burned out and jettisoned to fall into the sea. A second stage Vikas engine, consuming liquid propellants, ignited to continue the push into orbit, followed by burns of the rocket's third and fourth stages.

Telemetry downlinked from the rocket indicated it hit its marks, and live video streaming from the PSLV's fourth stage showed the 1,355-pound (615-kilogram) RISAT 2B radar observation satellite separating from the launcher less than 16 minutes into the mission.

Officials from the Indian Space Research Organization confirmed the PSLV placed the RISAT 2B spacecraft into an on-target 346-mile-high (557-kilometer) orbit, with an inclination of 37 degrees to the equator. Moments after separating from the rocket in space, RISAT 2B began transmitting its status to ground controllers, and ISRO officials declared the launch a success.

"I am extremely happy to announce that PSLV-C46 has successfully injected RISAT 2B precisely in the designated orbit," said K. Sivan, ISRO's chairmen, in a post-launch speech at the launch control center.

Designed for a five-year mission, RISAT 2B carries an X-band radar imaging instrument capable of resolving structures and features on Earth's surface, regardless of daylight or weather conditions. Earth-looking optical telescopes are inhibited by cloudy weather, and only produce usable imagery during daytime.

The satellite was developed by ISRO — the Indian space agency — and carries a dish-shaped radar antenna that was folded up to fit inside the rocket's payload compartment. Now that the satellite is in space, its radial band antenna will be unfurled to its full diameter of 11.8 feet (3.6 meters).

"This has been a much-awaited satellite with complex new technologies, X-band synthetic aperture radar, and one of the most cutting edge technologies in the world — one that is world-class — the 3.6-meter radial band antenna," said P. Kunhikrishnan, director of ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Center in Bangalore.

The spacecraft will supply 2 kilowatts of power to the radar instrument, which is able to collect imagery in spotlight, strip and mosaic modes. The imaging resolution of RISAT 2B's radar has not been disclosed by ISRO.

PSLV-C46 successfully launches RISAT-2B

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C46) today successfully launched RISAT-2B satellite from Satish Dhawan Space Centre(SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. This was the 72nd launch vehicle mission from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota and 36th launch from the First Launch pad.

PSLV-C46 lifted-off at 05:30 Hrs (IST) from the First Launch Pad and injected RISAT-2B into a orbit of 556 km, about 15 minutes and 25 seconds after lift-off. After separation, solar arrays of RISAT-2B were deployed automatically and ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bengaluru assumed control of the satellite. In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration.

RISAT-2B is a radar imaging earth observation satellite weighing about 615 kg. The satellite is intended to provide services in the field of Agriculture, Forestry and Disaster Management.

ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan congratulated the launch vehicle and satellite teams involved in the mission. "With this launch, PSLV lofts 50 tonnes to space by launching 354 satellites, including national, student and foreign satellites."

Dr. K Sivan also commended the efforts of the team involved in the realization of the piggyback payload carried onboard this mission namely, Vikram processor and low cost MEMS based Inertial Navigation System (INS) developed by SCL, Chandigarh and IISU, Trivandrum respectively. He also quoted "RISAT-2B is an advanced Earth Observation satellite with an advanced technology of 3.6m radial rib antenna"

A total number of 5000 visitors witnessed the launch live from the Viewer's Gallery, which is opened to the public.

ISRO is now gearing up for the launch of Chandrayaan-2 onboard GSLV MkIII during the window of July 09, to July 16, 2019, with an expected Moon landing on September 06, 2019.

Индийская организация космических исследований (ISRO) успешно вывела в среду на орбиту спутник RISAT-2B, способный вести наблюдение за земной поверхностью даже в условиях густой облачности. Как сообщает телеканал NDTV, старт ракеты-носителя PSLV-C46 с 615-килограммовым спутником на борту состоялся в 05:30 утра (03:00 мск) с космодрома на острове Шрихарикота в Бенгальском заливе.

Аппарат затем был успешно выведен на заданную орбиту. Спутник сможет вести наблюдение за Землей днем и ночью при любой погоде и "не оставит возможностей для сомнений" в случае, если индийские Вооруженные силы будут проводить операцию, подобную авианалету на пакистанский город Балакот, указывает телеканал.

26 февраля текущего года группа истребителей-бомбардировщиков "Мираж-2000" ВВС Индии нанесла удар по лагерю экстремистской группировки "Джаиш-е-Мухаммад" ("Армия Мухаммеда") на пакистанской территории близ Балакота. Индийская сторона тогда сообщила об уничтожении большого числа террористов, но Исламабад со своей стороны заявил, что никакого лагеря в этом месте не было и что индийские самолеты отбомбились по заросшим лесом склонам гор, нанеся ущерб природе. Густая облачность не позволила тогда Индии предоставить спутниковые фотоснимки, доказывающие результаты атаки.

Новый спутник, оборудованный самым современным радаром, позволит Вооруженным силам Индии получать точную информацию и отслеживать их действия в любых погодных условиях. RISAT-2B также сможет применяться для нужд сельского хозяйства, лесоводства и для отслеживания стихийных бедствий.

RISAT-2B: Radial Rib Antenna

Radial Rib antenna (RRA) is a world class technology demonstrated in-orbit today at 2:20 pm IST in the RISAT-2B spacecraft. This 3.6 metre antenna was folded & stowed during launch and later successfully unfurled & deployed in-orbit. The deployment was completed in 7 mins and 20 seconds.

Development of light weight structure, hinge mechanism, design of newer mesh, actuators etc., were some of the challenges involved in the realisation of this antenna. All such key technological elements require very high level of expertise in handling space based antenna system, excellent workmanship and building redundancy apart from managing the deployment in-orbit.

This antenna was realised indigenously by ISRO team in a record time of 13 months. Alternate import option would have taken about 3-4 years. Successful deployment of RRA in RISAT-2B establishes the combination of all skills mastered by ISRO indigenously.
