Special delivery: payloads arrive for Arianespace's fifth Soyuz mission carrying O3b satellites

The latest batch of O3b satellites for launch by Arianespace are unloaded from a chartered IL-76 cargo aircraft at French Guiana's Félix Eboué Airport. They will be orbited by a medium-lift Soyuz on Flight VS22.

French Guiana has welcomed the four passengers for Arianespace's second Soyuz mission in 2019, which will further expand the SES-owned O3b satellite constellation delivering low-latency, fiber-like connectivity to customers in more than 40 countries.

This spacecraft quartet – built by Thales Alenia Space – arrived this week aboard a chartered cargo jetliner that landed at Félix Eboué Airport near the capital city of Cayenne, enabling them to be transferred by road to the Spaceport's preparation facilities.

The O3b fleet of Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites is a proven non-geostationary constellation that provides commercial broadband services today, delivering carrier-grade services. The first 16 spacecraft for O3b were successfully orbited by four Soyuz vehicles operating from the Guiana Space Center in 2013, 2014 and 2018. Each satellite weighs about 700 kg. at launch and provides more than 10 Gbps of capacity.

4 LATEST O3B SATELLITES ARRIVE AT LAUNCH BASE

February 7, 2019 – The four latest O3b satellites arrived at the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana on February 2, after being shipped from Thales Alenia Space's facility in Rome. Built by Thales Alenia Space as prime contractor for SES, these communications satellites will be launched by a Soyuz rocket in March 2019, joining the current constellation of 16 satellites. The O3b system has been operational in orbit since 2014.

With the four latest satellites up and running in medium Earth orbit (MEO), the O3b constellation will offer greater capacity, better coverage and more efficient operation, along with higher reliability. SES Networks, SES' provider of global managed data services, will call on these high-performance satellites to offer communications services to telecommunications, maritime, aeronautical, and energy markets, as well as governments and institutions across the world.

These Ka-band satellites are positioned at an altitude of 8,000 kilometers along the equator, providing low-latency, fibre-like connectivity.

As prime contractor for a total of 125 satellites in three constellations, Globalstar 2 (24), O3b (20) and Iridium® NEXT (81), Thales Alenia Space is clearly the benchmark partner in the development and deployment of low and medium orbit telecom satellite constellations.

МОСКВА, 27 фев - РИА Новости. Запуск четырех британских спутников связи O3b с помощью ракеты-носителя "Союз-СТ-Б" с разгонным блоком "Фрегат-МТ" с космодрома Куру, планировавшийся на 26 марта, отложен на три дня, сообщил РИА Новости источник в ракетно-космической отрасли.

Ранее другой источник в отрасли говорил РИА Новости, что старт намечается на 26 марта.

Запуск шести спутников OneWeb планировался на 20 февраля, но был перенесен на 27 февраля из-за того что в конце января при подготовке на космодроме Куру на магистрали подачи гелия в разгонном блоке "Фрегат" была обнаружена трещина, которую позже заварили прибывшие из России специалисты. Затем старт был отложен на 28 февраля вследствие нештатного поведения третьей ступени ракеты "Союз-2.1б" при запуске египетского спутника EgyptSat-A 21 февраля.

В 2013–2018 годах с помощью четырех ракет "Союз-СТ" с космодрома Куру на орбиту были выведены 16 британских спутников связи O3b, предназначенных для недорогого высокоскоростного доступа в интернет. Они были построены европейской компанией Thales Alenia Space по заказу британской компании O3b Networks — 100% "дочки" европейского спутникового оператора SES.

В июне 2015 года Роскосмос подписал контракт с Arianespace и британской OneWeb на 21 коммерческий запуск 672 спутников на ракетах-носителях "Союз" с разгонными блоками "Фрегат" с космодромов Куру, Байконур и Восточный. OneWeb планирует создать группировку спутников, которая позволит обеспечить широкополосный доступ в интернет для пользователей по всему миру благодаря полному охвату поверхности Земли.

"Компания Arianespace проинформировала российскую сторону о переносе по техническим причинам запуска итальянского спутника дистанционного зондирования Земли PRISMA ракетой-носителем Vega с 14 на 21 марта. После пуска Vega для подготовки средств космодрома к старту ракеты "Союз" с космическими аппаратами O3b потребуется две недели", - сказал собеседник агентства.

В связи с этим, отметил он, пуск ракеты "Союз" отложен на 4 апреля. "Время старта - 19:31 мск", - добавил источник.

Arianespace reaches key preparation milestones for the next two flights on its 2019 manifest

The Spaceport is busy with activity as preparations advance for the next Vega and Soyuz missions – which will mark Arianespace's third and fourth flights of 2019, respectively, as the company builds upon its two launch successes performed earlier this year.

Encapsulated in its protective payload fairing, PRISMA is positioned atop Vega during activity at the Spaceport's SLV launch complex.

First in line is the Vega launch, designated Flight VV14 in Arianespace's numbering system, which will deliver the PRISMA (PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa) Earth observation satellite to Sun-synchronous orbit on a mission targeted for March 21.

The launcher has completed its build-up at the Spaceport, allowing final checkout to begin. This assembly process concluded with integration of Vega's "upper composite," consisting of PRISMA and its protective payload fairing. Installation took place at the Spaceport's SLV launch site, inside the facility's protective mobile gantry.

PRISMA: An Earth observation mission for Italy

PRISMA – was built for the ASI Italian space agency by OHB ITALIA as prime contractor, with LEONARDO responsible for the payload. Once operational, it will provide major applications to protect both our planet and Italy's national environmental safety.

Fitted with a state-of-the-art electro-optical instrument, made by a medium resolution photo camera sensitive to all the visible range (panchromatic) and by an innovative hyperspectral sensor, it will employ these capabilities for environmental monitoring, resources management, identification and classification of crops, fight against pollution, etc.

PRISMA will be the third satellite launched at the service of ASI by Arianespace, whose backlog comprises two other spacecraft for the Italian space agency.

The PRISMA satellite was designed and manufactured by a consortium of Italian companies led by OHB ITALIA which provided a dedicated platform hosting the payload supplied by LEONARDO.

Expanding the O3b satellite constellation

As key progress is made for Flight VV14, payload integration is underway for Arianespace's second Soyuz mission of 2019 – Flight VS22 – which will further expand the SES-owned O3b satellite constellation delivering low-latency, fiber-like connectivity to customers in more than 40 countries.

The second of four O3b satellites to be orbited on Arianespace's upcoming Soyuz mission is integrated on the dispenser system during activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation building.

This integration involves a step-by-step installation of the spacecraft on a tube-shaped dispenser system, with the activity taking place inside the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility.

Continuing the 2019 launch cadence

Arianespace has a busy launch schedule in 2019, targeting up to 12 missions from the Spaceport using its heavyweight Ariane 5, medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

The company kicked off its launch calendar with the Ariane 5 flight that orbited Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1/Hellas Sat 4 and GSAT-31 on February 5; which was followed by the history-making first launch of OneWeb satellites, performed February 27 by Soyuz.

For its fourth mission of 2019 — and the second this year with the Soyuz medium launcher from the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in French Guiana, Arianespace will be launching four more O3b satellites for SES.

By performing the 22nd Soyuz flight from the CSG, Arianespace is supporting — for the fifth time — SES in the expansion of its successful Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) satellite constellation.

Operational since 2014, the O3b medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellation delivers fiber-equivalent connectivity, and is part of SES's bold vision of connecting people and empowering them with opportunities.

Flight VS22 will be performed from the Soyuz Launch Complex (ELS) in Sinnamary, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 in Kourou to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

The O3b satellites lofted by Arianespace on Flight VS22 are the 58th, 59th, 60th and 61th satellites to be launched by Arianespace for the global satellite operator SES.

SES is the world-leading satellite-enabled service operator and is the first to deliver a differentiated and scalable GEO-MEO offering worldwide, with more than 50 satellites in Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and 16 in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

The O3b satellite quartet gets its "kick" for Arianespace's next Soyuz launch

Preparations for Arianespace's upcoming Soyuz mission from French Guiana at the service of SES have marked a new milestone as the payload of four O3b satellites and their dispenser have been integrated on the medium-lift launcher's Fregat upper stage.

During activity in the Spaceport's S3 payload integration building, the quartet of O3b satellites and their tube-shaped dispenser system were installed atop Fregat – which is to perform three propulsive burns before deploying the spacecraft into circular orbit during Soyuz' mission duration of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 51 seconds.

Scheduled for a midday liftoff on April 4, Soyuz will deliver a total payload lift performance of 3,198 kg.

Flight VS22 will be Arianespace's fifth in supporting SES' expansion of its satellite constellation. Operational since 2014, the O3b network delivers fiber-equivalent connectivity, and is part of SES' vision of connecting people and empowering them with opportunities.

В Гвианском космическом центре состоялся вывоз на стартовую позицию ракеты-носителя «Союз-СТ-Б» с разгонным блоком «Фрегат-МТ» и четырьмя европейскими аппаратами O3b.

Завершив вертикализацию, специалисты предприятий Роскосмоса провели операции по стыковке коммуникаций «пакета», сборке схем термостатирования, стыковке заправочных коммуникаций и другие операции, предусмотренные графиком подготовки. 

Особенностью подготовки пуска в Гвиане является раздельная транспортировка трех ступеней ракеты-носителя и космической головной части с последующей их сборкой на пусковой установке с использованием мобильной башни обслуживания.

ARIANESPACE FLIGHT VS22: A FIFTH LAUNCH FOR THE OPERATOR SES AND ITS O3b CONSTELLATION
For its fourth mission of 2019 — and the second this year with the Soyuz medium launcher from the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in French Guiana, Arianespace will be launching four more O3b satellites for SES.
By performing the 22nd Soyuz flight from the CSG, Arianespace is supporting — for the fifth time — SES in the expansion of its successful Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) satellite constellation.

В Гвианском космическом центре состоялись вывоз и установка на ракету-носитель (РН) «Союз-СТ-Б» космической головной части в составе разгонного блока «Фрегат-МТ» и четырёх европейских спутников O3b.

РН «Союз-СТ-Б» была установлена на стартовый комплекс 1 апреля. Специалисты Роскосмоса провели операции по механической, электрической и пневматической стыковке космической головной части с ракетой-носителем.

В предстартовые дни также запланированы автономные проверки разгонного блока «Фрегат-МТ» и ракеты-носителя «Союз-СТ-Б», контрольные и генеральные испытания, а также работы по контрольному набору стартовой готовности разгонного блока.

Пуск запланирован 4 апреля в 19:30 мск.

The launch vehicle for Arianespace's second Soyuz flight of 2019 is now complete following integration of its "upper composite" – containing the next four satellites to join SES' O3b constellation, which delivers low-latency, fiber-like connectivity around the world.

This activity occurred at the Spaceport in French Guiana, beginning with the workhorse launcher's rollout from its MIK integration hall to the launch zone.

Using procedures that date back to the origins of the space age, the Russian-built Soyuz was transferred horizontally, followed by its erection on the launch pad.

Once this action was completed, the upper composite was hoisted in the ELS launch zone's purpose-built mobile gantry – which provides a protected environment for the vertical installation atop Soyuz.

Expanding the O3b constellation (again)

Designated Flight VS22 in Arianespace's numbering system, the Soyuz mission will begin with a liftoff at exactly 1:30:37 PM local time in French Guiana on April 4. The four O3b passengers on board will be deployed into a circular orbit during a mission lasting 2 hours and 23 minutes.

The O3b fleet of medium-Earth orbit (MEO) satellites – operational since 2014 – is a proven non-geostationary constellation that provides commercial broadband services today, delivering carrier-grade services. The first 16 spacecraft for O3b were successfully orbited by four Soyuz vehicles operating from the Guiana Space Center in 2013, 2014 and 2018. Each satellite weighs about 700 kg. at launch and provides more than 10 Gbps of capacity.

By increasing the size of the O3b constellation from 16 to 20 satellites, SES Networks will offer enhanced coverage while providing greater service availability and reliability – responding to increasing demand for bandwidth from governments, as well as the telecom, cloud, maritime and energy markets.

Russian ground crews working in starkly different environments on the barren steppes of Kazakhstan and in the lush jungles of South America are readying a pair of Soyuz rockets for two launches Thursday, one to resupply the International Space Station, and another to broaden the capacity of SES's O3b Internet network.

The two launches are scheduled five-and-a-half hours apart, beginning with the blastoff of a Soyuz-2.1a rocket fr om the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 1101:35 GMT (7:01:35 a.m. EDT) carrying the Progress MS-11 cargo freighter with several tons of fuel, food and supplies for the space station and its six-person crew.

A Soyuz ST-B rocket at the Guiana Space Center on the northeast coast of South America will be filled with its kerosene and liquid oxygen propellant supply soon after the Soyuz launch in Kazakhstan, with clocks there ticking down to a liftoff at 1630:37 GMT (12:30:37 p.m. EDT) with four O3b broadband satellites.

It won't be the first time two Soyuz rockets will launch on the same day. A pair of Soyuz boosters blasted off less than two hours apart on June 25, 2013, fr om Kazakhstan and French Guiana.

Separate teams prepared the Soyuz rockets inside similar hangars at the spaceports in Central Asia and South America.

Both rockets rolled to their launch pads Monday, beginning with the emergence of the Soyuz rocket at Baikonur from its integration building. Riding behind a train engine, the rocket arrived at Launch Pad No. 31 at Baikonur, wh ere hydraulic lifts raised it vertical. Ground teams moved folding gantry arms into place around the rocket and the Progress MS-11 cargo craft for final pre-launch processing.

Hours later, Russian technicians in French Guiana transferred a three-stage Soyuz ST-B rocket to its launch pad.

Unlike the Soyuz launch pads at Baikonur, the launch facility in French Guiana has a mobile shelter that moved around the rocket after rollout. Another major difference between Soyuz launch campaigns at the different launch sites is that satellite payloads at the Guiana Space Center are installed atop the rocket vertically — after it is erected on the launch pad — while spacecraft are attached to Soyuz boosters horizontally at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The Soyuz-2.1a rocket set for launch Thursday from Baikonur will be fourth flight of a Soyuz booster this year. The Soyuz ST-B launch from the Guiana Space Center five-and-a-half later will mark the fifth Soyuz flight of 2019.

The two types of Soyuz rockets use the same basic design, which dates to the 1950s.

The Soyuz-2.1a configuration includes an upgraded digital guidance computer. The Soyuz ST-B uses the same digital control system, but the rocket's third stage is powered by an RD-0124 engine based on a newer design. Soyuz rockets shipped from their factory in Samara, Russia, to French Guiana also include changes to adapt the rocket to the tropical climate at the Guiana Space Center, and the four first-stage boosters and core stage are equipped with pyrotechnic charges to ensure the components sink after falling into the sea.

Jettisoned rocket stages fall on land after launches from Russian-operated spaceports.

Soyuz rockets have launched 1,901 times since the dawn of the Space Age, more than any other type of launch vehicle.

The Russian Progress MS-11 supply ship scheduled for launch Thursday from Baikonur will reach the International Space Station at 1425 GMT (10:25 a.m. EDT), less than three-and-a-half hours after liftoff. The automated freighter will dock with the space station's Pirs module after an expedited, fast-track rendezvous profile.

The Soyuz launch with the four O3b broadband satellites will be the 22nd Soyuz flight from French Guiana since 2011, wh ere missions are managed by Arianespace, the French launch service provider.

The Soyuz ST-B will depart the Guiana Space Center toward the east over the Atlantic Ocean, and deploy a Fregat upper stage nine minutes after liftoff. The Fregat's main engine will fire three times to place the four O3b satellites, built by Thales Alenia Space in France, into a circular orbit about 4,865 miles (7,830 kilometers) over the equator.

The O3b spacecraft each weigh around 1,543 pounds (700 kilograms) fully fueled at launch, and they will release from the Fregat upper stage in pairs beginning around two hours after liftoff.

The O3b satellites set for launch Thursday will join 16 similar spacecraft launched since 2013 to beam broadband Internet signals to areas outside the reach of terrestrial networks, such as island nations, cruise ships, oil and gas fields, and other remote outposts. The addition of four new satellites will expand the O3b network's capacity, according to SES, the fleet's owner and operator.

Lifting off mid-day from the Spaceport in French Guiana, the workhorse launch vehicle delivered the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th O3b satellites into a circular orbit during a flight lasting 2 hours and 22 minutes until final separation. Total payload lift performance was estimated at 3,198 kg.

After an initial powered phase of Soyuz' three lower stages, the flight – designated VS22 in Arianespace's numbering system – included three burns of the Fregat upper stage to place its passengers at their targeted deployment point.

Today's success is the fourth of Arianespace's missions targeted for 2019 using its full launcher family, and the second this year with Soyuz.

Flight VS22 continues the busy mission pace for the company, which has now performed a total of nine launches in a six-month span (beginning with Ariane 5's October 19 launch that sent BepiColombo on its way to explore Mercury).

The launch took place on Thursday, April 4, at 2:03 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America).

This was the fifth O3b mission by Arianespace, which has now orbited all 20 satellites in the first phase of this medium Earth orbit (MEO) constellation. Arianespace has launched a total of 61 satellites overall for SES since 1988, both geostationary and non-geostationary.

With this fourth successful launch of the year, and the second Soyuz mission for constellations in 2019, Arianespace continues to prove that its family of launchers is perfectly suited to all types of missions into all orbits.

Following the launch, Stéphane Israël, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, said: "With this fifth successful launch for the O3b constellation, Arianespace is proud of deploying the entire first phase of this innovative system. Arianespace: A key partner for SES, supporting its ambitious vision of global connectivity

SES is the world's first operator to provide a differentiated and scalable GEO-MEO offering worldwide, with more than 50 satellites in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) and – including this launch – 20 in medium Earth orbit (MEO).

The four new Ka-band satellites built by Thales Alenia Space and orbited today by Arianespace will join SES's existing constellation of O3b MEO satellites, operating at an altitude of approximately 8,000 km. and serving customers in nearly 50 countries. They will improve connectivity, increase performance and also seamlessly scale the existing O3b constellation.

Combining performance comparable to fiber-optics and global coverage, the O3b constellation will deliver high-performance solutions worldwide and help SES meet its ambitious goal of connecting the world by reducing the digital divide and offering new commercial models.

The first phase of this innovative space system started commercial service in September 2014. All satellites were deployed by Arianespace, using its Soyuz launcher. Each of the five launches lofted four satellites, performed in June 2013, July and December 2014, March 2018 and April 2019.

Arianespace: A major player in the constellation market

With today's launch, which is the second of the year for satellite constellations, Arianespace once again shows its ability to deploy these systems in either low or medium Earth orbit.

Since 1999, Arianespace has deployed a total of 113 constellation satellites (87 commercial and 26 institutional) for telecommunications and connectivity, Earth observation and navigation applications.

Constellations demand launch vehicles capable of deploying a large number of satellites during short periods of time, as well as replacing portions of the constellations over time as required. Arianespace's current launcher family addresses all these needs, making it perfectly suited to these innovative space systems. Europe's next-generation launchers – Ariane 6 and Vega C – also will offer the flexibility needed to meet these requirements.

In fact, several institutional and commercial customers have already signed launch contracts to deploy their constellations using Ariane 6 and Vega C.

A sustained high launch rate for Arianespace and its launchers

With nine launches in just six months (from October 19, 2018 to April 4, 2019), Arianespace continues to show its high availability and the capability of its family of launchers to perform all missions into all orbits.

Today's launch also signals the fourth Soyuz mission in less than five months from the Guiana Space Center (from VS19 on November 6, 2018 to VS22 on April 4, 2019). This impressive rate for Arianespace's launcher was made possible by the use of FCube (Fregat Fueling Facility), a building at the Guiana Space Center dedicated to fueling the Fregat upper stage. Inaugurated in 2015, it reduces the number of steps needed in Soyuz launch campaigns and optimizes this process.

Из строя вышла наземная станция слежения "Бретань-1"

МОСКВА, 4 апреля. /ТАСС/. Запуск российской ракеты-носителя "Союз-СТ-Б", которая должна вывести на орбиту четыре спутника O3b, с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане перенесен из-за поломки станции слежения "Бретань-1". Об этом ТАСС сообщил источник в ракетно-космической отрасли.

"Вышла из строя наземная станция слежения "Бретань-1", - сказал собеседник агентства, уточнив, что с ракетой все в порядке.

Старт "Союза-СТ-Б" был запланирован на 19:30 мск. Ранее Роскосмос на своей странице в Twitter сообщил о переносе запуска ракеты на полчаса.

"Союз-СТ-Б" должен вывести на орбиту спутники O3b, которые войдут в одноименную систему, принадлежащую люксембургскому оператору SES. Она предназначена для обеспечения высокоскоростной мобильной и стационарной связи. Последний вывод этих спутников на орбиту при помощи ракеты "Союз" состоялся в марте 2018 года. Тогда число аппаратов в группе достигло 16.

РН «Союз-СТ-Б» успешно вывела спутники O3b на орбиту

Сегодня, 4 апреля 2019 года, ракета-носитель (РН) «Союз-СТ-Б» с разгонным блоком (РБ) «Фрегат-МТ», успешно стартовав в 20:03 мск с Гвианского космического центра, вывели на расчетные орбиты четыре европейских телекоммуникационных космических аппарата (КА) О3b производства компании Thales Alenia Space по заказу люксембургского оператора SES.

Запуск осуществлён в рамках контракта «Главкосмоса» с компанией Arianespace в тесной кооперации с российскими предприятиями РКЦ «Прогресс», НПО Лавочкина и ФГУП «ЦЭНКИ».

Отделение двух пар космических аппаратов от разгонного блока прошло штатно. Спутники O3b выведены на расчетные орбиты и взяты на управление заказчиком.

Cпутники O3b пополнят масштабную группировку одноимённых космических аппаратов. Сейчас их число на орбите составляет 16 спутников, и они обеспечивают высокоскоростной мобильной и стационарной связью жителей удаленных и развивающихся регионов.

Данный пуск стал 75-м для разгонного блока «Фрегат» и 22-м из Гвианского космического центра.

4 апреля в 20:03 мск со стартовой площадки Гвианского космического центра (Куру, Французская Гвиана) состоялся успешный пуск ракеты-носителя «Союз-СТ-Б» с разгонным блоком «Фрегат-МТ» производства АО «НПО Лавочкина» и четырьмя европейскими космическими аппаратами «O3b» производства компании Thales Alenia Space по заказу люксембургского оператора SES.

Отделение двух пар космических аппаратов от разгонного блока прошло штатно в строгом соответствии с циклограммой полета в 22:04 и 22:26 мск соответственно. Космические аппараты «O3b» выведены на расчетные орбиты.

Cпутники «O3b» пополнят масштабную группировку одноимённых космических аппаратов. Сейчас их число на орбите составляет 16 спутников, и они обеспечивают высокоскоростной мобильной и стационарной связью жителей удаленных и развивающихся регионов.

Данный пуск стал 75-м для разгонного блока «Фрегат» и 22-м из Гвианского космического центра.
