Our Radio Frequency Risk Reduction Deployment Demonstration (R3D2) is set for #launch (https://twitter.com/hashtag/launch?src=hash) in late February to space-qualify new type of membrane reflectarray antenna. Made of a tissue-thin Kapton membrane, antenna deploys to 2.25 meters diameter once in LEO.

The RF Risk Reduction Deployment Demonstration (R3D2) made it to New Zealand this week. Payload integration has begun for its ride into low-Earth orbit on @RocketLab (https://twitter.com/RocketLab) Electron, targeted for later this month.

Following a delay to payload arrival, the R3D2 spacecraft is now at LC-1 & integration is underway! The launch window has been adjusted to the second half of March to provide the prime contractor with additional time to complete payload and spacecraft validation & verification.

ЦитатаHuntington Beach, California. 5 November 2019 - Rocket Lab, the global leader in dedicated small satellite launch, announced today that its next mission will launch multiple microsatellites in a rideshare mission representing five different countries. The launch window for Rocket Lab's tenth flight, named 'Running Out Of Fingers,' will open 25th November NZDT and take place from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula.

Onboard this rideshare mission are six spacecraft comprised of 5cm PocketQube microsatellites from satellite manufacturer and mission management provider Alba Orbital. The final payload on board was procured by satellite rideshare and mission management provider Spaceflight for ALE Co., Ltd (ALE), a Tokyo-based company creating microsatellites that simulate meteor particles.

Rocket  Lab's next rideshare mission will enable university research into  Earth's magnetic field, support the testing of new smallsat  communications architecture and demonstrate a streamlined, commercial  approach for getting government small satellites into space.
Long Beach, California. 9 March 2020  - Rocket Lab, a space technology company and the global leader in  dedicated small satellite launch, has announced today that its next  mission will deploy payloads for the National Aeronautics and Space  Administration (NASA), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the  University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra Space.


The launch  will take place from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia  Peninsula, with a 14-day launch window scheduled to commence from 27  March 2020 NZT. The mission will be Rocket Lab's 12th Electron launch since the company began launches in May 2017.


The  rideshare mission will launch several small satellites, including the  ANDESITE (Ad-Hoc Network Demonstration for Extended Satellite-Based  Inquiry and Other Team Endeavors) satellite created by electrical and  mechanical engineering students and professors at Boston University. The  satellite will launch as part of NASA's CubeSat Launch Initiative  (CSLI) and will conduct groundbreaking scientific study into Earth's  magnetic field. Once in space, the ANDESITE satellite will initiate  measurements of the magnetosphere with onboard sensors, later releasing  eight pico satellites carrying small magnetometer sensors to track  electric currents flowing in and out of the atmosphere, a phenomenon  also known as space weather. These variations in the electrical activity  racing through space can have a big impact on our lives here on Earth,  causing interruptions to things like radio communications and electrical  systems. The ANDESITE satellite follows on from Rocket Lab's first  ELaNa (Educational Launch of Nanosatellites) launch for NASA, the  ELaNa-19 mission, which launched a host of educational satellites to  orbit on Electron in December 2018. 


The mission also carries  three payloads designed, built and operated by the NRO. The mission was  procured under the agency's Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR)  contract vehicle. RASR allows the NRO to explore new launch  opportunities that provide a streamlined, commercial approach for  getting small satellites into space, as well as provide those working in  the small satellite community with timely and cost-effective access to  space. This mission follows Rocket Lab's first dedicated mission for the  NRO, Birds of a Feather, which was launched on 31 January 2020 NZT from  Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1.


The ANDESITE and NRO payloads will  be joined on the mission by the M2 Pathfinder satellite, a collaboration  between the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra Space and the  Australian Government. The M2 Pathfinder will test communications  architecture and other technologies that will assist in informing the  future space capabilities of Australia. The satellite will demonstrate  the ability of an onboard software-based radio to operate and  reconfigure while in orbit.


Rocket Lab founder and chief  executive, Peter Beck, says the mission is a great example of the kind  of cutting-edge research and fast-paced innovation that small satellites  are enabling.

NASA Launch Services Program (LSP) ELaNa Mission Lead,  Scott Higginbotham, said "Through the CSLI, NASA engages the next  generation of space explorers. This initiative provides university teams  like ANDESITE with real life, hands-on experience in conducting an  actual space research mission in conjunction with NASA. The students  grow as professionals and NASA benefits from the research. We are truly  excited about this collaborative mission."


"We're very excited to  be launching M2 Pathfinder with Rocket Lab who have been so very  flexible in accommodating our spacecraft specific needs, let alone the  ambitious nine month project timeframe," said Andrin Tomaschett,  Spacecraft Project Lead at UNSW Canberra. "The success of this  spacecraft will unlock so much more, for our customers and for  Australia, by feeding into the complex spacecraft projects and missions  our team are currently working on."


The mission has been named  'Don't Stop Me Now' in recognition of Rocket Lab board member and  avid Queen fan Scott Smith, who recently passed away.


Rocket Lab will not be carrying out any recovery testing on the Electron launch vehicle during this mission.

In response to the evolving COVID-19 situation, we have paused launch preparations for our next mission to protect the health and safety of Rocket Lab team members, our families, and the wider community.

The mission was scheduled to lift off fr om Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand on 30 March UTC. Launch preparations have been paused, however, following the New Zealand Government's announcement on 23 March NZDT to implement the Level 4 COVID-19 response which requires most businesses to close and instructs people to stay at home. We commend the government for taking this drastic but necessary step to lim it the spread of COVID-19.

Synspective's  StriX-α satellite will be launched on an Electron launch vehicle as a dedicated mission from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand.

The missions were awarded through the NRO's Rapid Acquisition of a Small Rocket (RASR) contract, an initiative that enables the agency to explore new opportunities for launching small satellites through a streamlined, commercial approach. The RASR-3 and RASR-4 missions are scheduled for launch within weeks of each other in late spring 2021 from two separate pads at Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1.

«Я безумно люблю Венеру», -- говорит исполнительный директор Rocket Lab Питер Бек (Peter Beck). «Я много работаю над тем, чтобы подготовить частную миссию к Венере в 2023 году».
Способность осуществлять межпланетные миссии появилась у Electron благодаря росту производительности с 225 до 300 кг на низкую орбиту, который произошёл за счёт прогресса в технологиях изготовления электробатарей (они используются для питания насосов обоих ступеней). А также благодаря разработке 3-й ступени ракеты, которая будет базироваться на их спутниковой платформе «Photon».
«Это открывает окно к Венере и окно для повторного использования [1-й ступени]» -- говорит Бек. «Photon, который ещё не выполнил своё дебютный полёт, не будет спускаться в сернистую атмосферу Венеры в предстоящей миссии. Текущий план предполагает сброс в атмосферу одного или нескольких меньших аппаратов», -- написал он в Твиттере.
«Конечно, нет никакой гарантии, что жизнь существует в венерианских облаках. Или что планируемая Rocket Lab миссия найдёт её, если она там есть. Но эта миссия может стать реальным переворотом в космических исследованиях, независимо от её научных результатов», -- добавил Питер.
Примечательно, что в 2010 году вместе с зондом Акацуки к Венере запускался небольшой 20-килограммовый аппарат «Shin'en», который создавался коллаборацией японских университетов. Однако на следующий день после запуска с ним была потеряна связь. Так что отчасти это может стать уже не первой частной миссией к Венере, но вполне может стать первой успешной.

Ещё из новостей о Rocket Lab: в этом году фирма планировала провести 12 запусков, но пандемия помешала этим планам. Установка на 1-ю ступень парашютов для её спасения сократила полезную нагрузку на 15 кг. Обтекатель стоит порядка $20 тыс. и у них нет планов его спасать. Также они не планируют создавать более тяжёлую ракету-носитель, так как эти ниши рынка уже заняты другими компаниями. Логотип Rocket Lab может появиться в игре Kerbal Space Program.

«Обычно, если вы хотите выполнить научную миссию к Луне, вам нужно начинать выписывать чек на $50-100 млн», -- говорит Бек. Но когда Photon выйдет на сцену, «за $10-20 млн вы реально сможете делать какую-нибудь хорошую науку: межпланетную или лунную. Вот что меня будоражит!».

Long Beach, California. 21 September, 2020 - Leading space systems company, Rocket Lab, has today announced its next Electron launch will be a rideshare mission to low Earth orbit for Planet and Spaceflight Inc.'s customer Canon Electronics.
The mission - named 'In Focus' in a nod to the Earth-imaging satellites onboard - will lift-off in October from Rocket Lab's private orbital launch site, Launch Complex 1, in New Zealand. The mission will deploy a total of 10 satellites to precise and individual orbits. The mission will be Rocket Lab's 15th launch overall and fifth mission of 2020, making Electron the second most-frequently launched United States orbital rocket this year.
Earth-imaging company Planet has nine of their latest generation SuperDove satellites booked on the mission for deployment to a 500km morning-crossing Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). Each of the nine SuperDoves will be integrated with and deployed from Rocket Lab's Maxwell dispensers, the industry's lightest CubeSat dispenser in its class. Planet's Flock 4e' of SuperDoves will join the company's constellation of Earth-observation satellites already on orbit providing medium-resolution global coverage and near-daily revisit.
The 10th and final payload aboard this mission, Canon Electronics Inc.'s CE-SAT-IIB, was arranged by satellite rideshare and mission management provider Spaceflight Inc. CE-SAT-IIB is a technical demonstration microsatellite developed by Canon Electronics Inc. It has a middle-size telescope equipped with an ultra-high sensitivity camera to take night images of the Earth and small size telescopes which are suitable for CubeSat use.
Rocket Lab's founder and CEO, Peter Beck, says the mission demonstrates the industry-leading flexibility Electron provides to small satellite operators by deploying multiple spacecraft to their various target destinations even when flying as part of a rideshare.
"With Electron, we designed a launch system that makes access to space easy and puts our customers in the driver's seat of their missions, and we're proud to be delivering on that even through times of global disruption."
Rocket Lab has multiple missions scheduled for the remainder of 2020, including an upcoming launch in Q4 earmarked for the company's first Electron first stage recovery attempt. The Electron's first stage will be equipped with new hardware, including a reaction control system and an in-house designed parachute system, to orient the booster during its re-entry descent and slow down the first stage before a soft landing in the ocean where it will be collected by a ship.

Long Beach, California. November 2, 2020 - Leading space systems company, Rocket Lab, has today announced its next Electron mission will feature a diverse range of payloads from the United States, France and New Zealand.
The mission, which will be Rocket Lab's 16th Electron launch, will lift-off from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Māhia Peninsula during a 14-day launch window that opens on November 16 NZT / November 15 UTC.
Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle will loft 30 satellites to a sun-synchronous orbit at 500 km altitude for a range of customers, including TriSept, Unseenlabs, Swarm Technologies, Te Pūnaha Ātea - Auckland Space Institute, and Gabe Newell, co-founder of global gaming software company Valve. The satellites span a range of operations, from TriSept's tech demonstration of new tether systems designed to accelerate spacecraft reentry and reduce orbital debris, through to the next generation of maritime surveillance satellites for Unseenlabs, as well as communications satellites for Swarm Technolgies. The mission will also deploy New Zealand's first student-built satellite, the APSS-1 satellite for Te Pūnaha Ātea - Auckland Space Institute at The University of Auckland.
A mass simulator will also be fixed to this mission's Kick Stage in the form of a 3D printed gnome created for Valve's Gabe Newell by multi-award-winning design studio Weta Workshop, the creative studio behind Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and Mulan. The unique space component is additively manufactured into the shape of Half-Life gaming icon Gnome Chompski. The mission serves as an homage to the innovation and creativity of gamers worldwide, and also aims to test and qualify a novel 3D printing technique that could be employed for future spacecraft components. ...

The DRAGRACER mission will test the effectiveness of new tether technologies designed to accelerate spacecraft reentry and reduce orbital debris at the conclusion of space missions. TriSept has completed the integration of a pair of qualified Millennium Space Systems 6U small satellites, one featuring the tether drag device and one without. The controlled spacecraft should deorbit in approximately 45 days, while the second spacecraft is expected to remain in orbit for seven to nine years, according to Tethers Unlimited, developer of the 70-meter-long (230 feet) Terminator Tape aboard the control satellite.

BRO-2 and BRO-3 are the second and third satellites in French company Unseenlabs' planned constellation of about 20 satellites dedicated to maritime surveillance. The first BRO satellite was launched to orbit by Rocket Lab in August 2019. Unseenlabs' constellation enables improved monitoring of activities at sea, such as illegal fishing and anti-environmental behavior. Thanks to a unique proprietary technology, the BRO satellites are the first to be able to independently and precisely locate and fingerprint Radio Frequency (RF) emitters all around the globe, day or night, in any weather condition, and without requiring any special embarked tracking device. With three satellites in orbit, Unseenlabs' clients can now benefit from the shortest revisit time available on the satellite RF geolocation market.

The student-built Waka Āmiorangi Aotearoa APSS-1 satellite is designed to monitor electrical activity in Earth's upper atmosphere to test whether ionospheric disturbances can predict earthquakes. The data from this mission will deliver deeper knowledge of these hard-to-access altitudes and drive understanding of how phenomena such as solar wind and geophysical events affect this atmospheric region.

Swarm will launch the latest 24 1/4U SpaceBEE satellites to continue building out its planned constellation of 150 satellites to provide affordable satellite communications services to IoT devices in remote regions around the world. Swarm's uniquely small satellites enable the company to provide network services and user hardware at the industry's lowest cost and deliver maximum value to customers across a range of industries including maritime shipping, agriculture, energy, and ground transportation. The SpaceBEES will be integrated into two of Rocket Lab's 3U Maxwell CubeSat dispensers for orbital deployment.

Manufactured with support from multi-award-winning design studio Weta Workshop, the unique space component is additively manufactured from titanium and printed in the shape of Half-Life gaming icon Gnome Chompski. The mission serves as an homage to the innovation and creativity of gamers worldwide, and also aims to test and qualify a novel 3D printing technique that could be employed for future spacecraft components. The 150 mm gnome will remain attached to the Kick Stage during all mission phases and will burn up upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere during the de-orbiting process.

The mission is named 'The Owl's Night Begins' in a nod to Synspective's StriX family of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) spacecraft developed to be able to image millimeter-level changes to the Earth's surface from space. Strix is also the genus of owls.

The CAPSTONE mission will see Rocket Lab extend its reach far beyond Earth orbit for the first time to deploy an in-house designed and built Photon spacecraft to the Moon.

Long Beach, California. December 11, 2020 - Rocket Lab has reached a key milestone ahead of the company's first launch to the Moon, with spacecraft qualification underway for the Photon spacecraft that will transport a NASA satellite into a unique lunar orbit that no other spacecraft has explored before.
NASA's Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) will be launched by Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle and Photon in Q2 2021. The CAPSTONE satellite will act as a pathfinding precursor for lunar missions, including Gateway, a Moon-orbiting outpost that will provide vital support for a sustainable, long-term human return to the lunar surface under NASA's Artemis program. Rocket Lab's Photon spacecraft, which will act as a trans-lunar injection stage for this mission, has now entered a rigorous qualification test campaign at Rocket Lab's Production Complex, one of the final development milestones before lift-0ff in the new year.
To travel more than 380,000 km to the Moon, CAPSTONE will lift-off on an Electron launch vehicle to an initial low Earth orbit. From there, Rocket Lab's in-house designed and built Photon spacecraft, will take the reins to provide in-space transportation, power, and communications for NASA's satellite until separation, when CAPSTONE will continue on its own trajectory to lunar orbit. Photon will also continue to the Moon to conduct a lunar fly-by as a secondary mission. In preparation for the mission, Photon has entered a rigorous test and qualification campaign to subject the spacecraft to conditions similar to those it will experience during launch and in space. This qualification process will see Photon undergo thermal vacuum tests to recreate the extreme variations in temperature experienced in space, as well as vibration tests and acoustic tests to replicate the conditions during launch. Development and testing of the CAPSTONE satellite platform and propulsion system is being undertaken simultaneously by Advanced Space in Boulder, Colorado, Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems in Irvine, California, and Stellar Exploration in San Luis Obispo, California. The satellite is scheduled for integration with the Photon spacecraft in the new year.
Though modelers on the ground have studied the unique near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO) that CAPSTONE is destined for, no spacecraft has actually maneuvered into it to date. By testing out this halo-shaped orbit, CAPSTONE will help reduce risk for future spacecraft by verifying the orbit's dynamics, while also validating innovative navigation technologies. The NRHO is a gravitationally balanced orbit between the Earth and the Moon, offering stability for long-term missions like Gateway and requiring minimal energy to maintain, making it a perfect staging point for lunar and deeper space missions.
Lunar missions have historically required decades of planning, hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, and have been carried out by large spacecraft that require launch on huge rockets. By contrast, the CAPSTONE mission will lift-off less than two years since the project's inception, and at a launch cost of less than $10 million. The launch is supported by the Launch Services Program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission development is funded by the agency's Space Technology Mission Directorate and managed by the Small Spacecraft Technology Program at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley.

With CAPSTONE we're demonstrating that lunar and interplanetary missions can be fast, cost-effective, and highly tailored," said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab founder and CEO. "Providing launch, in-space transportation, and satellite buses as a single, integrated mission solution was an ambitious program, but one we're proud to have brought to market. Electron and Photon have unlocked the door for small satellite missions beyond low Earth orbit, enabling an exciting future for easier and cheaper scientific research missions to other planets, asteroids, moons, and more."

MISSION OVERVIEW
Rocket Lab's 19th Electron mission will deploy a range of satellites for commercial and government satellite operators, as well as place a next-generation Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft in orbit to build spacecraft heritage ahead of Rocket Lab's mission to the Moon for NASA later this year.

 Seven satellites feature on the mission manifest, including:
- An Earth-observation satellite for BlackSky via launch services provider Spaceflight Inc.;
- Two Internet-Of-Things (IoT) nanosatellites for companies Fleet Space and Myriota, procured by Tyvak;
- A technology demonstration satellite for the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra Space;
- a weather satellite pathfinder technology demonstration from Care Weather technologies;
- A technology demonstrator for the U.S. Army's Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) through launch integration and program management services provider, TriSept.
The final payload on this mission is Rocket Lab's in-house designed and built Photon Pathstone. The spacecraft will operate on orbit as a risk reduction demonstration to build spacecraft heritage ahead of Rocket Lab's mission to the Moon for NASA later this year, as well as Rocket Lab's private mission to Venus in 2023. Photon Pathstone will demonstrate power management, thermal control, and attitude control subsystems, as well as newly-integrated technologies including deep-space radio capability, an upgraded RCS (reaction control system) for precision pointing in space, and sun sensors and star trackers. The multi-launch agreement with launch services provider Spaceflight Inc., who will manage the integration and launch services for BlackSky, includes the launch of nine BlackSky satellites across five Electron missions this year. The deal represents the largest number of satellites BlackSky has committed to a single launch provider to date and includes the successful launch of BlackSky's latest spacecraft on Rocket Lab's "They Go Up So Fast" rideshare mission earlier this week. 
Eight of BlackSky's 130 kg class satellites will be launched across four dedicated missions on Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle throughout 2021 in a demonstration of rapidly-acquired  launch services. This responsive launch capability supports the aggressive scaling of BlackSky's satellite constellation to meet the demand for real-time global monitoring and analysis services for public and private organizations. These satellites will join three existing BlackSky satellites launched by Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle across 2019 and on the most recent mission this week. The agreement also includes options for an additional two dedicated missions on Electron in Q4 2021. 
Rocket Lab Founder and CEO, Peter Beck, says Electron's dedicated launch service provides the reliability and speed to space that is critical for companies like BlackSky building out their satellite constellations and growing their businesses.

The BlackSky satellites join a busy launch manifest for Rocket Lab in 2021 which includes a scheduled dedicated mission for the U.S. Space Force, a mission to the Moon for NASA, and launches for a range of commercial customers. Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle is the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually since 2019, having deployed more than 100 satellites to space for commercial and government customers across 17 orbital missions. Electron has become a workhorse launch vehicle for the small satellite industry and provides uniquely targeted access to orbit for constellation satellites.   

The launch agreement follows on from a March 1 announcement that Rocket Lab USA, Inc. ("Rocket Lab") and Vector Acquisition Corporation (Nasdaq: VACQ) ("Vector"), a special purpose acquisition company backed by leading technology investor Vector Capital, have entered into a definitive merger agreement that will result in Rocket Lab becoming a publicly traded company. The transaction is estimated to be completed in Q2 2021 and, at that time, Vector will change its name to Rocket Lab USA, Inc. and the combined company is expected to trade under the Nasdaq ticker symbol RKLB.

Насколько можно судить по видео, двигатель второй ступени заработал, но тут же погас. Вскоре после этого оператор сообщил о потере телеметрии. Спустя несколько минут компания прервала трансляцию из центра управления полетом.

По задумке, система управления должна была переориентировать первую ступень на 180°и разместить ее под идеальным углом для повторного входа в атмосферу, чтобы выдержать пиковую температуру в 2400°С и нагрузки на скорости, в восемь раз превышающей скорость звука. На 7 минуте 20 секунде после старта на падающую ступень ожидалась максимальная динамическая нагрузка.
Через 16 секунд после этого (и снижения до скорости <2 Мах) ее должен был начать замедлять вытяжной парашют. На 8 минуте 44 секунде планировалось раскрытие основного парашюта для контролируемого приводнения в определенную точку в Тихом океане - на 12 минуте 16 секунде после старта.

Вся миссия была рассчитана на 55 минут 33 секунды (https://www.liga.net/images/general/2021/05/15/20210515110351-6791.jpg). Спутники должны были вывести на круговую солнечно-синхронную орбиту высотой 420 км с наклонением 50°.
Это был юбилейный 20-й запуск частной американо-новозеландской компании, основанной Питером Беком (https://twitter.com/peter_j_beck). ESCAPADE is being developed under NASA's Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx) program in the Science Mission Directorate (SMD). The two spacecraft are planned for launch in 2024 to Mars ridesharing aboard a NASA-provided commercial launch vehicle.

Following an 11-month interplanetary cruise, the two Photons (named Blue and Gold) will insert themselves into elliptical orbits around Mars and conduct a 1-year primary science mission. ESCAPADE's Photons will use the flight-proven Curie propulsion system to perform Mars orbit insertion and will be equipped with other subsystems that enable planetary science, including star trackers and reaction wheels for precision pointing from Rocket Lab's Sinclair Interplanetary team, as well as ranging transceivers for deep space navigation.

От Рокетлаба требуется на основе платформы «Фотон» (она же служит РБ, она же хост для разнообразной ПН) сделать две АМС. Смысл, очевидно, проверить пригодность Фотона как стандартизированного хоста, куда любой университет может ставить сенсоры, не заморачиваюсь со всем прочим.

Long Beach, California. August 6, 2021 - Rocket Lab, the leading launch and space systems company, today announced it will launch the CAPSTONE mission to the Moon from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand from Q4 2021. It will be Rocket Lab's first launch to the Moon. CAPSTONE (the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment) aids NASA's Artemis (https://www.nasa.gov/specials/artemis/) program, which includes landing the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon and establishing a long-term presence there.
Launching on an Electron launch vehicle and deploying from Rocket Lab's Photon spacecraft platform, CAPSTONE is a 55-pound satellite created by Advanced Space that will serve as the first spacecraft to test a unique, elliptical lunar orbit. As a precursor for Gateway and other Artemis elements, an international and commercial Moon-orbiting outpost that is part of NASA's Artemis program, CAPSTONE will help reduce risk for future spacecraft by validating innovative navigation technologies and verifying the dynamics of this halo-shaped orbit.
The mission is the first time Rocket Lab will use its Photon spacecraft platform as a trans-lunar injection stage to place a satellite on a trajectory that will take it beyond Earth orbit to the Moon. After lifting off on Electron to an initial elliptical low Earth orbit, Photon will separate and use its 3D printed HyperCurie engine to provide in-space propulsion to allow CAPSTONE to break free of Earth's gravity and set a course for the Moon. After deploying the CAPSTONE satellite, Photon will continue on its own trajectory to conduct a lunar fly-by, while CAPSTONE will use its own propulsion system to enter a cislunar orbit.
Following a three-to-four-month trip to the Moon, the CAPSTONE CubeSat will enter a near rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO), which is a highly elliptical orbit over the Moon's poles. During its six-month primary mission in orbit around the Moon, CAPSTONE will validate the propulsion requirements for maintaining this type of orbit as predicted by models, reducing logistical uncertainties for future missions. It will also test the accuracy of innovative spacecraft-to-spacecraft navigation solutions as well as demonstrate capabilities for commercial support of future lunar missions. The NRHO provides the advantage of an unobstructed view of Earth in addition to coverage of the lunar South Pole.
Originally slated for lift-off from Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 2 in Virginia, the CAPSTONE mission will now take place from Launch Complex 1 to support a Q4 launch window....

The next Electron rocket on the pad is the first of three dedicated missions for BlackSky scheduled for lift-off from late August through September.

Long Beach, California. August 10, 2021 - Rocket Lab, a leading launch provider and space systems company, has today announced its next mission is part of a rapid launch schedule of three dedicated Electron missions for global monitoring provider BlackSky.

Scheduled to lift-off from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula in late August, the 'Love At First Insight' mission will be Rocket Lab's 22nd Electron launch overall and fifth mission of 2021. 'Love At First Insight' is the first in a rapid succession of scheduled Electron launches between late August through September that represent the company's fastest launch turnarounds to date.

The 'Love At First Insight' mission is the latest in a multi-launch agreement signed earlier this year for BlackSky between Rocket Lab and Spaceflight Inc., which is providing integration and mission management services for BlackSky. This mission will deploy the eighth and ninth satellites of BlackSky's planned constellation as part of that rapid-launch agreement, with another four Gen-2 smallsats across the two additional Electron dedicated missions to follow.

Electron will deploy two of BlackSky's high-resolution, multi-spectral, Gen-2 satellites to low Earth orbit, expanding BlackSky's network in space and offering of real-time geospatial intelligence and monitoring services. BlackSky combines high-resolution images captured by its constellation of microsatellites with its proprietary artificial intelligence software to deliver analytics and insights to industries including transportation, infrastructure, land use, defense, supply chain management, and humanitarian aid.

"Dedicated launch on Electron means a bespoke service for satellite operators who want control over their schedule and orbital parameters," says Rocket Lab founder and CEO Peter Beck. "Rapid launch with these three back-to-back missions enables BlackSky to fast-track their plans for a constellation that meets the hunger for real-time data produced by multiple images within 24 hours, rather than one image at the same time each day."

"We've been partnering strongly with Rocket Lab over the past several months to gain high confidence in a launch campaign that will increase the capacity of our space network," said Brian E. O'Toole, CEO of BlackSky. Long Beach, California. August 16, 2021 - Rocket Lab, a leading launch provider and space systems company, has today announced it will launch a satellite to test space junk removal technologies for Aurora Propulsion Technologies, a Finnish company dedicated to the sustainable use of space.

Lifting-off from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula as part of a rideshare mission scheduled in Q4, 2021, Electron will deploy AuroraSat-1 to low Earth orbit in a demonstration of the company's proprietary propulsion devices and plasma brakes that provide efficient propulsion and deorbiting capabilities for small satellites. The CubeSat will validate the water-based propellant and mobility control of its Resistojets that can assist CubeSats with detumbling capabilities and propulsion-based attitude control. AuroraSat-1 will also test its deployable Plasma Brakes which combine a micro-tether with charged particles in space, or ionospheric plasma, to generate significant amounts of drag to deorbit the spacecraft safely at the end of its life.

The recently-signed launch agreement provides Aurora with an accelerated on-ramp to space at a critical phase in the company's growth and technology development. Originally manifested to launch on a different rocket and orbital transfer vehicle, this rapid and streamlined space access, combined with the ability of Electron's Kick Stage to precisely deliver payloads to their unique orbits, were decisive factors in Aurora selecting Rocket Lab as the launch provider for their mission.

Aurora CEO, Roope Takala said: "After earlier launch plans fell through, we greatly value Rocket Lab's ability to offer a launch in a flight window starting just three months from our originally planned launch date. The quick response Rocket Lab offered allows us to space prove our technologies this year and keep on track with our development plans."

The AuroraSat-1 launch agreement follows a collection of other announced satellites flying onboard Electron including the first ever wooden satellite, WISA Woodsat, developed by Finnish company Arctic Astronautics. The mission is expected to follow on from three back-to-back Electron launches in August and September for BlackSky Global, and the CAPSTONE mission to the Moon in support of NASA's Artemis program.

The four pico-satellites in Alba Orbital's cluster will fly as part of a rideshare mission on Rocket Lab's Electron launch vehicle, lifting-off from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula in Q4, 2021. The cluster includes Alba Orbital's own Unicorn-2 PocketQube satellites, as well as the TRSI-2, TRSI-3, and MyRadar-1 satellites for Alba Orbital's customers. Each small satellite carries a unique sensor designed to demonstrate innovative technologies on orbit.

Unicorn-2 will be carrying an optical night-time imaging payload designed to monitor light pollution across the globe. Night-time satellite imagery, otherwise known as 'Night Lights' data, provides crucial insights into human activities. This data enables a host of applications such as tracking urbanization and socioeconomic dynamics, evaluating conflict and disasters, investigating fisheries, assessing greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, and analyzing light pollution and health effects.

All four PocketQubes will be deployed to a circular orbit by Electron's Kick Stage, a nimble spacecraft that provides in-space propulsion and maneuvering capability to ensure each satellite is deployed to a precise and unique orbit defined by the customer.

The Alba cluster joins this mission alongside AuroraSat-1 from Aurora Propulsion Technologies, a Finnish company dedicated to the sustainable use of space. The mission is one of many scheduled to lift off on Electron from Launch Complex 1 this year, including three back-to-back dedicated launches for BlackSky Global, and the CAPSTONE mission to the Moon in support of NASA's Artemis program.

Мини-спутники ДЗЗ весом около 60 кг вошли в состав орбитальной группировки, которая, по данным BlackSky, к 2022 году должна будет состоять из 16 космических аппаратов. Они позволяют получать оптические изображения с разрешением в 50-90 см с высоты 430 км. С нынешним запуском BlackSky уже располагает на орбите девятью аналогичными спутниками.
Запуск легкой двухступенчатой ракеты с разгонным блоком Kick Stage Curie был осуществлен в 14:38 по новозеландскому времени (в 04:38 мск) со стартовой площадки компании Rocket Lab на полуострове Махия в Новой Зеландии. Через 55 минут полезная нагрузка была выведена на орбиту.

В рамках миссии, получившей название Love At First Insight, первая многоразовая ступень ракеты-носителя Electron примерно через 10 минут после запуска приводнилась в Тихом океане с помощью парашютной системы. Она будет поднята из воды специальным спасательным судном. Для компании Rocket Lab это уже вторая подобная операция. Первая попытка была успешно осуществлена в ноябре прошлого года. В перспективе первую ступень планируется ловить при спуске на парашюте с помощью вертолета.
