Arianespace to orbit the CSO-1 military observation satellite for CNES and DGA

For its 11th and final launch of the year – and the third in 2018 with the Soyuz medium launcher – Arianespace will send the CSO-1 Earth observation satellite, intended for defense and security applications, into Sun-synchronous orbit for the French CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) space agency and the DGA (Direction générale de l'armement) defense procurement agency on behalf of the French Ministry of Defense.

This also will be the 20th mission carried out by Soyuz since it began operating at the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in October 2011.

With this latest launch at the service of France's defense requirements, as well as for the capacity needs of several partner countries, Arianespace once again guarantees French and European autonomous access to space – a strategic priority, and a key element for sovereignty.

Flight VS20 will be performed from the Soyuz Launch Complex (ELS) in Sinnamary, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Monday, December 17, 2018 in Kourou to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

CSO-1 is the first satellite of the Optical Space Component (CSO – Composante Spatiale Optique) program, a constellation of three satellites dedicated to Earth observation for defense and security. They will be placed into polar orbit at different altitudes, and will carry out two different missions: reconnaissance for CSO-1 and CSO-3, and identification for CSO-2.

The French CNES space agency is delegated as the contracting authority for the Optical Space Component (CSO) program and its mission ground segment, as well as being the overall system co-architect. CNES also is responsible for orbital positioning, in-orbit acceptance testing and satellite operation.

France's DGA defense procurement agency is contracting authority for the construction and through-life maintenance of the user ground segment, and will serve as the interface between the sensors deployed in space and the operators. The French armed forces headquarters is the operating authority for CSO.

The CSO-1 satellite will be placed in a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 800 km. It will be used to acquire very-high-resolution images in the visible and infrared bandwidths; day, night and in fair weather, using a variety of imaging modes to meet as many operational requirements as possible.

Since its creation in 1980, Arianespace has orbited a total of 590 satellites, including 67 intended for defense and security purposes (including auxiliary payloads). CSO-1, the first in a series of three first-generation satellites for the French armed forces ministry, will be the 42nd satellite launched by Arianespace for CNES and DGA.

Airbus Defence and Space France is prime contractor for the CSO satellites, while Thales Alenia Space France supplies the optical imaging instrument. CSO-1 will be the 123rd Airbus Defence and Space satellite to be launched by Arianespace

Всего европейская компания Airbus Defence and Space по заказу французских военных должна изготовить спутники CSO-1 и CSO-2 для замены аппаратов аналогичного назначения Helios 2A и Helios 2B, запущенных в 2004 и 2009 годах. Полезную нагрузку для спутников производит компания Thales Alenia Space.

Soyuz rolls out for Arianespace's year-ending launch that will enhance French intelligence gathering efforts

The Soyuz launcher for Arianespace's 11th and final mission in 2018 has rolled out to the launch pad in French Guiana, readying this medium-lift vehicle to receive its payload for a December 18 liftoff fr om the Spaceport.

Soyuz was moved from the Spaceport's MIK launcher assembly facility to the ELS launch zone, using a transport/erector rail car in a horizontal transfer process. When positioned over the launch pad, the vehicle was erected into a vertical orientation, wh ere it is suspended in place by four large support arms.

The mobile gantry was subsequently moved into position around the basic three-stage launcher, providing protection for the upcoming installation of Soyuz' "upper composite," which consists of the Fregat upper stage and payload fairing, along with the CSO-1 spacecraft passenger.

Supporting French defense requirements

Next week's mission, which is designated Flight VS20 in Arianespace's numbering system, will be the 20th launch of a medium-lift Soyuz from Europe's Spaceport. It is scheduled to lift off at precisely 1:37:14 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with CSO-1 to be deployed into a Sun-synchronous orbit during a flight lasting approximately one hour. Total payload lift performance is estimated at 3,713 kg.

The CSO-1 satellite will be launched at the service of France's CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) space agency and the DGA (Direction générale de l'armement) defense procurement agency, on behalf of the French Ministry of Defense. It will be used to take 3D pictures and to acquire very-high-resolution images in the visible and infrared bandwidths, day or night and in fair weather, and using a variety of imaging modes to meet as many operational requirements as possible.

A Russian-made Soyuz booster rolled out to its launch pad in French Guiana on Friday, and hydraulic lifts rotated the launcher vertical in preparation for liftoff Tuesday with the first in a new series of French military spy satellites.

The three-stage rocket emerged fr om its assembly hangar Friday morning for the 2,300-foot (700-meter) rollout to the launch zone. Russian ground crews deployed on temporary duty in the jungle of French Guiana oversaw the rocket's transfer on rail car along dual tracks leading from the hangar to the launch pad.

Once at the pad, the rocket was positioned over the flame bucket, then lifted upright for hold-down arms to rotate into position around the launcher. A mobile gantry moved into position around the rocket later Friday, giving workers access to all levels of the Soyuz launcher in preparation for final pre-flight checks and installation of the French-built spy satellite set to ride the vehicle into orbit Tuesday.

The first satellite in the French military's new Composante Spatiale Optique, or CSO, series of reconnaissance satellites was expected to arrive at the launch pad Friday evening, wh ere cranes were awaiting to hoist the spacecraft — already inside the Soyuz payload shroud — on top of the rocket to cap the build-up of the launcher.

The CSO 1 satellite is the first of three satellites in the French military's new space-based optical surveillance network, which replaces the Helios 1 and 2 family of reconnaissance satellites, the last of which launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket in 2009.

The 7,859-pound (3,565-kilogram) CSO 1 spacecraft was built by Airbus Defense and Space, with final integration occurring in Toulouse, France. Thales Alenia Space supplied each satellite's high-resolution optical imaging instrument.

Liftoff of the Soyuz rocket from its launch pad in South America is scheduled for 1637:14 GMT (11:37:14 a.m. EST; 1:37:14 p.m. French Guiana time) Tuesday. It will be the 20th flight of a Soyuz launcher from French Guiana since 2011 under the auspices of Arianespace, and the French launch provider's 11th and final mission of 2018, including flights by Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega rockets.

After flying north from French Guiana over the Atlantic Ocean, Canada and the Arctic, the Soyuz rocket's Fregat upper stage will release the CSO 1 spacecraft in a nearly circular polar orbit roughly 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth approximately one hour after liftoff.

Designed for a 10-year mission, the CSO 1 satellite will be joined another CSO spacecraft launched on a future Soyuz rocket flight into a lower orbit around 300 miles (480 kilometers) in altitude, enabling it to collect even more detailed imagery for analysis by European military officials. A third CSO satellite, made possible with German financial support, will be launched by Europe's next-generation Ariane 6 rocket.

The third-generation spy satellite fleet cost more than $1.5 billion, including spacecraft, launch and ground system upgrade expenses, according to French authorities. The program is funded through the DGA, the French military's procurement agency, and the French space agency CNES is responsible for in-orbit testing, satellite operations, and the purchasing of the spacecraft and launch services.

The French government has agreements with the governments of Germany, Sweden and Belgium to share CSO imagery, and an agreement with Italy is expected to be signed soon, officials said.

The CSO satellites will collect day-and-night imagery in visible and infrared bands. Each spacecraft features an agile pointing capability, allowing rapid steering from target to target, and enabling views from different look angles for three-dimensional stereo surveillance products.

Soyuz is ready for Arianespace's launch of the CSO-1 defense imaging satellite for France

Arianespace's 2018 year-ending mission has been given its authorization for launch from the Spaceport in French Guiana, clearing the way for tomorrow's medium-lift Soyuz flight that will place France's CSO-1 satellite into Sun-synchronous orbit.

Soyuz has been cleared for Arianespace's December 18 liftoff with CSO-1, which is contained in the "upper composite" – shown here after integration atop the launch vehicle in French Guiana.

This 11th and final Arianespace mission of 2018 passed its launch readiness review today, validating the "go" status for Soyuz and its spacecraft passenger, along with the Spaceport's infrastructure and the downrange tracking stations.

The launch readiness review followed final integration activities for Soyuz, during which the vehicle was fitted with its "upper composite," consisting of the Fregat upper stage and CSO-1 passenger encapsulated by the launcher's ogive-shaped payload fairing. This occurred inside the protective mobile gantry on the Soyuz ELS launch complex.

The 20th Soyuz mission from French Guiana

Designated as VS20 in Arianespace's numbering system, this will be the 20th launch of a medium-lift Soyuz from the Spaceport, with CSO-1 to be deployed during a flight lasting approximately one hour. The mission is using a Soyuz ST-A version of the Russian-build workhorse vehicle, with total payload lift performance estimated at 3,713 kg. for the mission.

Liftoff is set at 1:37 p.m., local time in French Guiana, on December 18.

The CSO-1 satellite will be orbited for France's CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) space agency and the DGA (Direction générale de l'armement) defense procurement agency, on behalf of the French Ministry of Defense. Operating at an altitude of 800 km., it will take 3D pictures and acquire very-high-resolution images in the visible and infrared bandwidths – day or night and in fair weather – and using a variety of imaging modes to meet as many operational requirements as possible.

Airbus Defence and Space is prime contractor for the CSO satellites; Thales Alenia Space supplies the optical imaging instrument.

Arianespace will close out its 2018 launch activity with Flight VS20 – which follows 10 other flights conducted from the Spaceport: six performed with Ariane 5, two utilizing the lightweight Vega, and two with the medium-lift Soyuz.

Mission managers have decided to delay the launch of a Soyuz rocket from French Guiana due to unfavorable high-altitude winds over the launch base, located on the northeastern shore of South America.

The launch has been rescheduled for Wednesday at the same time -- 1637:14 GMT (11:37:14 a.m. EST; 1:37:14 p.m. French Guiana time).

Officials decided to halt today's launch attempt before fueling the Soyuz rocket with its supply of kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants.

The Soyuz rocket will head north from the Guiana Space Center, targeting the placement of the French military's CSO 1 spy satellite into a 500-mile-high (800-kilometer) polar orbit.

The launch team is loading more than 500,000 pounds of liquid oxygen and kerosene propellant into the rocket this morning, plus hydrogen peroxide to drive the engines' gas turbines and liquid nitrogen to keep the propellant tanks pressurized.

The Soyuz countdown sequence begins 5 minutes, 10 seconds prior to liftoff, then the Fregat upper stage will transition to internal power five minutes before launch.

The umbilical arm servicing the upper stage and payloads will pull away at T-minus 2 minutes, 25 seconds. The Soyuz rocket is operating on internal power at T-minus 40 seconds, and the final servicing mast retracts from the rocket 20 seconds later.

The ignition sequence of the Soyuz rocket's kerosene-fueled core stage and four strap-on boosters begins 17 seconds before liftoff, and all engines should be at full thrust three seconds before launch.

Flying for the 20th time from the Guiana Space Center in South America, the Soyuz will head north over the Atlantic with the French military's CSO 1 reconnaissance satellite, which will be released at T+plus 60 minutes, 44 seconds, into a near-circular polar orbit at an average altitude of approximately 500 miles (800 kilometers)

It will be the 11th flight of the year for Arianespace, the French launch services provider responsible for Soyuz launches from French Guiana.

The mobile gantry has now retracted into position for liftoff, revealing the Soyuz rocket on its launch pad at the Guiana Space Center.

The European-funded, Russian-built pad is located about eight miles northwest of the Ariane 5 and Vega launch pads at the Guiana Space Center. Engineers sel ected the Soyuz launch site based on terrain, geology and a location away from Ariane facilities to ensure they did not interfere with each other.

It took three years and cost European governments $800 million to build the Soyuz launch facility, which is known by its French acronym ELS. Other than the 17-story mobile servicing tower and four lightning masts, the launch pad is modeled after the Soyuz launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

This morning's launch is the 20th Soyuz to fly fr om ELS.

The Soyuz pad includes blue and yellow umbilical arms and hold-down petals at the base of the rocket. On the back side of the pad is a deep flame trench dug out of granite bedrock. The facility also houses living quarters for Russian workers and a launch control center.

The Soyuz site lies closer to the town of Sinnamary than Kourou, which is more typically associated with the spaceport.

Ending the year on a high note, Arianespace's final mission of 2018 from the Spaceport in French Guiana successfully delivered the CSO-1 satellite – which will enhance French intelligence gathering efforts.

This third flight of Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz in 2018 was performed for France's CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) space agency and the DGA (Direction générale de l'armement) defense procurement agency, on behalf of the French Ministry of Defense. It delivered the CSO-1 spacecraft passenger (which had a mass at launch of 3,566 kg.) into Sun-synchronous orbit.

Today's mission – designated Flight VS20 – was the 305th overall carried out by the three members of Arianespace's launcher family (Soyuz, Ariane and Vega), and the 20th by the Russian-built Soyuz workhorse vehicle from French Guiana since its 2011 service entry at the Spaceport. Flight VS20 also was Arianespace's 11th mission of 2018.

20th Soyuz launch from the Guiana Space Center and the third in 2018

As the 20th Soyuz launch since it began operating at the Guiana Space Center (CSG), VS20 also is the second in a series of four flights by Soyuz through March 2019 to be launched from the CSG. The optimized launch campaigns use the Fregat Fueling Facility (FCube) – a building inaugurated in 2015 that is dedicated to the Fregat upper stage on the Soyuz launch vehicle.

VS20 is the 11th and final launch performed by Arianespace in 2018: six were carried out with Ariane 5; three utilized Soyuz; and two with Vega. Arianespace has once again demonstrated its flexibility and availability, with six launches conducted in under three months – from September 25 to December 18 – and four launches at a rate of one every two weeks since November 6.

Shortly after orbital injection of the CSO-1 satellite, Arianespace Chairman and CEO Stéphane Israël said: "Arianespace is proud to have orbited CSO-1, a key satellite for French and European defense. I would like to thank our French customers and partners, CNES, the DGA and the Ministry of Defense, who have renewed their trust in us today. This first of three Optical Space Component satellites marks the first step in the renewal of France's defense satellite capabilities. Arianespace will further contribute to these capabilities with the launch early in the next decade of CSO-2 and CSO-3, the Syracuse satellites 4A and 4B and the three CERES satellites.

The CSO-1 satellite

The CSO-1 satellite was built by Airbus Defence and Space.

Airbus Defence and Space France is prime contractor for the satellite, while Thales Alenia Space France supplied the optical imaging instrument.

CSO-1 was placed in a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 800 km. and will acquire 3D pictures and very-high-resolution images in the visible and infrared bandwidths, day, night and in fair weather, using a variety of imaging modes to meet as many operational requirements as possible.

Its launch mass was 3,566 kg. and it has a design life of 10 years.

Правительство Франции заключило соглашения с правительствами Германии, Швеции и Бельгии о предоставлении данных, которые будут получать спутники CSO. Аналогичное соглашение в ближайшее время будет подписано и с Италией.

Это уже 20-й старт ракеты "Союз" с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане с 2011 года на основе межправительственного соглашения между Россией и Францией.

"Ракета-носитель "Союз-СТ-А" (производитель РКЦ "Прогресс") и разгонный блок "Фрегат-М" (производитель - НПО Лавочкина) - выполнили программу полета без замечаний. Аппарат взят заказчиком на управление", - отметили там.

Глава Роскосмоса Дмитрий Рогозин заявил, что пусковая кампания Arianespace VS20 успешно завершена.

В среду в 19:37:14 мск с космодрома Гвианского космического центра осуществлен успешный пуск ракеты-носителя "Союз-СТ-А" с французским спутником CSO-1.

Через 8 минут и 49 секунд после старта головной блок в составе разгонного блока "Фрегат-М" и спутника CSO-1 успешно отделился от третьей ступени ракеты-носителя.Спустя 1 час и 44 секунды после старта прошло отделение французского спутника CSO-1 от разгонного блока "Фрегат-М".
