Chinese commercial company Expace has dispatched its second Kuaizhou-1A launch vehicle to the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in preparation for a mission this month.

Expace will employ its 20-metre-tall, 1.4-meter-diameter Kuaizhou-1A solid-fuelled rocket to launch a small satellite known as Centispace-1-S1, marking the second launch for the missile-derived launch vehicle.

According to a company press release, the rocket and transporter-erector-launcher vehicles were loaded on to a train (https://www.weibo.com/6180132521/Gyw5L7caS?refer_flag=1001030103_&type=comment#_rnd1536656503867) following testing and assessment, before departing the city of Yichang in Hubei Province on Sunday destined for Jiuquan in Gansu Province, northwest China.

While stated for September, an accurate launch date has not been announced, nor has any information on the payload been released.

Expace was jointly established in February 2016 by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the state-owned defence giant and missile maker, and the China Sanjiang Space Group, making it only nominally private.

The Kuaizhou-1A, now used by Expace, was developed under CASIC and derived from missile technology.

Commercial liftoff

Expace has signed contracts to provide launch services for further Jilin satellites, and is working on much larger Kuaizhou-11 and -21 launch vehicles. The latter, with a diameter of 4.5 metres, according to Chinese state media, will be capable of sending 20 metric tonnes into a low Earth orbit.

In December the company secured nearly US$182m (https://gbtimes.com/chinese-commercial-rocket-company-secures-12bn-yuan-investment-multiple-launches-set-for-2018) in funding for the development and launch of its Kuaizhou series of solid fuelled launch vehicles.

Expace says it is aiming to provide low-cost, rapid launch, light-lift services for domestic, commercial and foreign customers, with a new hub based at the Wuhan National Space Industry Base in the capital of Hubei Province, which was set up in 2016 (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2016-09/13/content_26777705.htm).

The Chinese government took the decision in late 2014 to open the space sector to private capital, paving the way for the establishment of and investment in companies seeking to develop launch vehicles and other areas, including remote sensing satellites, resulting in the establishment of Expace, CGST, OneSpace and more in the launch and satellite sectors.

Landspace, led by former national aerospace employees, is preparing to launch its solid-fuelled Zhuque-1 (https://gbtimes.com/landspace-closing-in-on-first-chinese-private-orbital-launch) (Vermillion Bird-1) rocket.

Launch could take place as soon as early October and would mark the first orbital mission by a private Chinese company.

Chinese New Space satellite launch company ExPace has delivered its second Kuaizhou-1A launch vehicle to the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in preparation for lift-off sometime in September 2018.

ExPace will launch its 20-metre-tall, 1.4-meter-diameter Kuaizhou-1A solid-fuelled vehicle to launch a small satellite called Centispace-1-S1. The launch will be the second one for the Kuaizhou-1A that is derived from the design used for China's antisatellite (ASAT) and ballistic missile defence interceptor missiles.

According to an ExPace press release, the rocket and transporter-erector-launcher vehicles are being delivered to Jiuquan by train following testing and assessment.

While the launch is slated for September, a precise launch date has not been announced. Nor has any information on the Centispace-1-S1 payload been released.

ExPace was jointly established in February 2016 by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), a state-owned defence company and missile manufacturer, and the China Sanjiang Space Group. This business arrangement means that ExPace cannot be considered to be a truly private company, unlike companies like OneSpace and Landspace.

The Kuaizhou-1A was first launched in January 2017 lifting a Jilin-1 Earth observation video satellite for Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. Ltd. (CGST), a geospatial intelligence company with Chinese government connections that is building a constellation of similar satellites.

One of these Jilin-1 Earth observation video satellites captured the launch of the OneSpace suborbital rocket from orbit last week.

According to Andrew Jones of GBTimes, ExPace has signed contracts to provide launch services for further Jilin satellites, and is working on much larger Kuaizhou-11 and -21 launch vehicles. The Kuaizhou-21, with a diameter of 4.5 metres, according to Chinese media sources, will be capable of sending 20 metric tonnes into a low-Earth orbit.

In December 2017 ExPace secured approximately U.S.$182 million in funding for the development and launch of its other Kuaizhou solid-fuelled launch vehicles.

The ExPace September lift-off will be the latest in a series of launches undertaken by a number of Chinese companies in 2018, some of which can be regarded as New Space companies and others that are subsidiaries of, or subsidized by, large Chinese state-owned companies.

ExPace intends to provide low-cost and rapid launch services for Chinese and foreign small satellite customers from a new launch site at the Wuhan National Space Industry Base in the capital of China's Hubei Province that was created in 2016.

Commercial space company Expace sent a small, experimental satellite into orbit with a Kuaizhou-1A launch vehicle on Saturday, marking China's 26th orbital launch of 2018.

The Kuaizhou-1A solid-fuelled rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert at 04:13 universal time (12:13 local), with authorities declaring success within the hour.

The 20-metre-tall, 1.4-meter-diameter Kuaizhou-1A solid-fuelled rocket has a liftoff mass of around 30 metric tonnes and is capable of lifting 200 kg of payload to a 700 km Sun-synchronous orbit.

Aboard was the Centispace-1-S1 small, experimental satellite which, according to a press release, is a pilot satellite for a low Earth orbit navigation and positioning enhancement system being developed by Beijing Future Navigation Technology Co., Ltd., with satellite having been developed by the Institute of Micro-satellite Innovation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The mission was the second launch for the missile-derived launch vehicle, which had its maiden flight in January 2017 (https://gbtimes.com/landspace-closing-in-on-first-chinese-private-orbital-launch).

Saturday's launch was the 26th of the year for China, and the first not performed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the main contractor for the Chinese space programme.

Chinese commercial space companies have emerged following a 2014 Chinese government decision to open the space sector to private capital, especially in the arenas of launch and small satellites.

JIUQUAN, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China launched its Centispace-1-s1 satellite on a Kuaizhou-1A rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 12:13 p.m. Saturday.

This is the second commercial launch by the Kuaizhou-1A rocket. The first launch in January 2017 sent three satellites into space.

The Kuaizhou-1A was developed by a rocket technology company under the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). It is a low-cost solid-fuel carrier rocket with high reliability and a short preparation period, designed to launch low-orbit satellites weighing under 300 kg.

The Centispace-1-s1 was developed by Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is a technology experiment satellite for the low-orbit navigation enhancement system being developed by Beijing Future Navigation Technology Co. Ltd.

СеntiSpace-1-s1 спроектирован Институтом по изучению миниатюрных спутников "Microsat" при Академии наук Китая. Он представляет собой первый экспериментальный спутник в рамках проекта низкоорбитальной системы спутниковой системы, который реализует одна из пекинских научно-технических фирм.
