Preparations continue for our final (historic!) launch 8 on January 7th. Final 2 (of 10) sats just left the factory (we track them by Iridium IoT) for the base; 6 of 10 are already mated. Everything needed is there - just need to put it all together for a launch in 24 days!

A Falcon 9 rocket built and operated by ULA rival SpaceX was previously set for liftoff from a nearby launch pad at Vandenberg on Jan. 7 carrying 10 Iridium voice and data relay satellites, the last of a set of 75 upgraded commercial Iridium spacecraft launched by SpaceX since January 2017. Iridium CEO Matt Desch wrote Thursday on Twitter that the launch remained scheduled for Jan. 7 at 7:53 a.m. PST (10:53 a.m. EST; 1553 GMT).

The Air Force-run Western Range at Vandenberg typically requires a day or two to reconfigure safety and tracking assets between rockets, raising questions about whether the Falcon 9 launch was postponed, or if the Delta 4-Heavy on a national security mission might take priority over a commercial SpaceX launch.

In a subsequent tweet Friday after ULA's announcement, Desch wrote that he has not heard of any delays in Iridium's launch. The 10 satellites, built by Thales Alenia Space and Northrop Grumman, are at Vandenberg, fueled with maneuvering propellant, mated to their dispensers and encapsulated inside the Falcon 9's payload shroud, Desch said.

The NROL-71 and Iridium missions will be the first launches of 2019 for ULA and SpaceX.

The launch of 10 more upgraded spacecraft aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket Friday will complete the build-out of Iridium's modernized $3 billion global communications network, setting up for the debut of new broadband and aircraft tracking services in the coming months.

With Friday's launch, SpaceX and Iridium will have teamed up for the launch of 75 payloads on eight Falcon 9 flights since January 2017, giving Iridium a full complement new spacecraft to fully replace and upgrade its aging voice and data relay network.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket, powered by a reused first stage booster that previously flew in September from Cape Canaveral, is set for liftoff at 7:31:33 a.m. PST (10:31:33 a.m. EST; 1531:33 GMT) Friday from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-stage rocket will deploy the 10 satellites — built in partnership by Thales Alenia Space and Northrop Grumman Innovations Systems — one at a time over a 15-minute period approximately an hour after liftoff.

SpaceX plans to land the Falcon 9's first stage again after Friday's launch on a drone ship positioned the Pacific Ocean a few hundred miles south of Vandenberg. The launch company's net-fitted payload fairing retrieval ship, Mr. Steven, is not expected to attempt to catch the Falcon 9's nose shroud Friday.

Matt Desch, Iridium's chief executive, told reporters before the launch that the addition of 10 more satellites to the network — enough to complete the total replacement of the constellation — is "a huge deal."

IRIDIUM-8 MISSION

On Friday, January 11 at 7:31 a.m. PST, 15:31 UTC, SpaceX successfully launched the eighth and final set of satellites in a series of 75 total satellites for Iridium's next generation global satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT. Falcon 9's first stage delivered the second stage to its targeted orbit followed by deployment of all 10 Iridium NEXT satellites approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes after launch.

Following stage separation, the first stage of Falcon 9 successfully landed on the "Just Read the Instructions" droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean. Falcon 9's first stage for the Iridium-8 mission previously supported the Telstar 18 VANTAGE mission in September 2018.

(NASDAQ: IRDM) announced today that at 07:31 am PST (15:31 UTC) a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base and delivered the final 10 Iridium® NEXT satellites to low earth orbit (LEO). All 10 satellites have successfully communicated with the Iridium Satellite Network Operations Center and are preparing to undergo initial on-orbit testing. This was the eighth and final launch for Iridium's historic launch campaign with SpaceX, seeing a total of 75 new satellites deployed over less than two years.

Iridium has invested approximately $3 billion to replace its original satellite system with a new, state-of-the-art network, ushering in an era of financial and technological transformation for the company. At the core of this transformation is the dramatic change in cash flows as construction capital expenses end and a decade or longer "capex holiday" allows significant cash generation from existing and new services. The Iridium satellite constellation is unlike any other in orbit and is the only communications network with pole-to-pole coverage of the entire planet. It is comprised of six polar orbiting planes, each containing 11 crosslinked satellites totaling 66 in the operational constellation, creating a web of coverage around the Earth. The 10 Iridium NEXT satellites launched as part of this final mission were deployed to orbital plane three. Since the launches began, the constellation has been undergoing a one-for-one replacement, new satellite for old, achieved through a highly choreographed in-space maneuver known as a "slot swap."

To date, new satellites make up 60 of the 66 satellites in operation, with the final six scheduled for activation in the coming weeks from today's launch. Iridium NEXT satellites were designed by Thales Alenia Space, which serves as system prime contractor, and are being integrated by Thales' subcontractor, Northrop Grumman. The production process features an 18-station, state-of-the-art assembly line system for all 81 Iridium NEXT satellites being built.

In total, 81 satellites are being built with 75 successfully launched. Nine of the satellites launched will serve as on-orbit spares, and the remaining six will be ground spares.

The Jan 11 launch of Falcon 9 from Vandenberg placed Iridium SV 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 173, 175, 176 and 180 in a 610 x 626 km x 86.7 deg orbit. Stage 1 (B1049) landed on the JRTI and Stage 2 was deorbited near Antarctica.
