Commercially driven advances help SSL customers to connect people and transform lives around the world
PALO ALTO, CA, June 21, 2018 /CNW/ - SSL (https://www.sslmda.com/), a Maxar Technologies company (formerly MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.) (NYSE: MAXR (http://studio-5.financialcontent.com/prnews?Page=Quote&Ticker=MAXR), TSX: MAXR), today announced it shipped the first of three satellites that SSL will deliver to the SpaceX (http://www.spacex.com/falcon9) launch base at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida over the next month. Driven by commercial advances, the three satellites will bring communications capability to connect people and transform lives around the globe.

Two more SSL communications satellites are scheduled to ship to SpaceX launch base over the next month including a second HTS for Telesat, Telstar 18 VANTAGE, ...

"SSL has a long legacy of leveraging its commercial mindset to provide satellite operators with spacecraft systems that address their requirements and enable global transformation," said Dario Zamarian, group president, SSL. "The cadence this month of shipping out three satellites for launch demonstrates our ongoing market leadership and commitment to quality, reliability, and performance."

Telstar 18 VANTAGE

Telstar 18 VANTAGE, the third HTS in Telesat's global fleet, will be located at 138 degrees East, an ideal position for connecting Asia to the Americas. It will replace and expand on the capabilities of Telesat's Telstar 18 satellite through its extensive C-band coverage of Asia, its Ku-band HTS spot beams over Indonesia and Malaysia, and its six additional Ku-band regional beams. These high performance beams will enable Telstar 18 VANTAGE to meet growing demand for mobility, enterprise networks and telecom services across the Asia region. As previously announced, Telesat has partnered with APT Satellite of Hong Kong in the design and procurement of this spacecraft, which APT calls Apstar-5C.

"Telesat has worked closely with SSL and the Maxar family of companies for many years and we are pleased to have collaborated with them on our newest Telstar VANTAGE high throughput satellites," said Dan Goldberg, President and CEO of Telesat. "These state-of-the-art spacecraft are going to provide important competitive advantages for our customers across the Americas and Asia. It's great news that Telstar 19 VANTAGE is now at the launch base and that Telstar 18 VANTAGE is nearly finished and in the queue to ship."

The balls used in the @FIFAWorldCup (https://twitter.com/FIFAWorldCup) share a name with the next SSL-built satellite to launch -- Telstar 18 VANTAGE. The name Telstar 18 is a tribute to the first communication satellite to broadcast the @Adidas (https://twitter.com/adidas) World Cup in 1970.

LIVE: запуск ракеты Falcon 9 со спутником связи Telstar 18 Vantage/APStar 5C
https://naked-science.ru/article/live/live-zapusk-rakety-falcon-9-so-6

A brief test-firing of a Falcon 9 rocket Wednesday morning kept SpaceX on track for a launch Saturday night from Cape Canaveral with a communications satellite to be jointly used by Telesat and APT Satellite of Hong Kong.

The rocket's nine Merlin 1D main engines ignited at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) Wednesday after SpaceX engineers filled the two-stage Falcon 9 with a mixture of super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen.

SpaceX confirmed the static fire test in a tweet a few minutes later.

Static fire test of Falcon 9 complete—targeting September 8 launch of Telstar 18 VANTAGE from Pad 40 in Florida.

7:21 (https://twitter.com/SpaceX/status/1037345042434646021) - 5 сент. 2018 г.
The mock countdown Wednesday morning occurred without the rocket's satellite payload on-board. The next step in the launch campaign will be the lowering of the Falcon 9 from its launch mount, then the return of the launcher to a nearby hangar at the Florida spaceport.

Technicians in the hangar will mate the mission's payload — the Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite — to the forward end of the Falcon 9's upper stage in the next few days, conduct a series of electrical and mechanical connectivity verifications, then roll the rocket back to its seaside launch pad Saturday.

The four-hour launch window opens at 11:28 p.m. EDT Saturday (0328 GMT Sunday), after several delays that pushed back the flight from last month.

A forecast issued Wednesday by the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron predicts a 60 percent chance of favorable conditions during Saturday night's launch window.

"Cloudiness and showers will gradually increase over the spaceport on Friday and Saturday as an upper-level trough moves westerly across Florida," forecasters wrote. "Low-level winds become more southerly during this time frame, enhancing the convergent band shower threat. The launch weather concerns are cumulus and thick clouds. Maximum upper-level winds will be from the northeast at 20 knots at 40,000 feet."

Isolated rain showers are forecast to be in the area at launch time, with scattered clouds at 2,500 feet, and broken cloud decks at 15,000 feet and 25,000 feet. Good visibility, a temperature of around 78 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds of 12 to 17 mph from the south-southeast are expected.

The rocket assigned to launch the Telstar 18 VANTAGE satellite is a newly-built Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicle. SpaceX's ocean-going landing platform has departed Port Canaveral en route for a position in the Atlantic Ocean to recover the Falcon 9's first stage following Saturday night's blastoff.

The Telstar 18 VANTAGE spacecraft, built by SSL in Palo Alto, California, will provide C-band and Ku-band communications services across the Asia-Pacific region from a perch in geostationary orbit nearly 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

The new satellite will launch into an elliptical transfer orbit aboard the Falcon 9, then use its on-board thruster to climb into a circular orbit, wh ere its orbital velocity will match the rate of Earth's rotation at 138 degrees east longitude.

Once Telstar 18 VANTAGE arrives at its operating post, it will commence a 15-year mission, beaming high-throughput signals to serve direct-to-home broadcast, video distribution, maritime, and other telecom markets. Carrying a combination of broad regional beams and high-bandwidth spot beams, the satellite's coverage area will span from India and Pakistan in the west, to Hawaii in the east.

APT Satellite — also known as APSTAR — of Hong Kong will use 57.5 percent of the satellite's communications capacity, in exchange for funding 57.5 percent of the mission's total cost, officials said. The Telesat 18 VANTAGE satellite is also named APSTAR 5C, and it will replace the aging Telstar 18/APSTAR 5 telecom craft hauled into orbit by a Sea Launch Zenit 3SL booster in 2004.

In 2015, APSTAR agreed to pay $118.8 million for its share of the new Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C satellite program, according to the company's filings with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. That suggests the total cost of the mission is roughly $206 million.

The agreement gives APSTAR use of an equivalent of 36.2 of the satellite's total complement of 63 transponders, the company said in a statement.

APSTAR operates five geostationary communications satellites, while Telesat, headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, counts 16 geostationary telecom craft in its fleet, in addition to a pathfinder satellite for a planned broadband network in low Earth orbit.

"Telstar 18 VANTAGE is a high throughput, highly flexible, state-of-the-art satellite that will provide a significant competitive advantage to customers serving the demanding requirements of broadcast, enterprise and government users throughout Asia ," said Dan Goldberg, Telesat's President and CEO, in a statement released when the companies announced the new satellite program in 2015. "We are pleased to be making this important addition to our global satellite fleet and, moreover, pleased to continue our long and successful relationship with APSTAR, a leading Asian operator with whom we have closely cooperated for over a decade."

A commercial communications satellite set for launch fr om Florida's Space Coast on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to beam broadband and television signals across the Asia-Pacific region will remain on Earth until at least Sunday night, 24 hours later than previously scheduled.

The Telstar 18 VANTAGE satellite, also known as APSTAR 5C, was supposed to launch atop a brand new Falcon 9 rocket Saturday night. The high-power telecom craft, built by SSL in Palo Alto, California, weighs around 15,564 pounds (7,060 kilograms) and is set to begin a 15-year mission for Telesat and APT Satellite, based in Canada and Hong Kong, respectively.

But officials decided to delay the launch, according to Gerald Nagler, a Telesat spokesperson. Nagler did not provide a new target launch date, but the website for Patrick Air Force Base, headquarters of the U.S. Air Force's 45th Space Wing, was updated late Thursday to show the mission is scheduled for liftoff Sunday, Sept. 9.

The four-hour launch window would open at 11:28 p.m. EDT Sunday (0328 GMT Monday).

A SpaceX spokesperson Thursday would not confirm a reason for the launch postponement — or even if the mission has been delayed — in response to questions fr om Spaceflight Now. SpaceX tweeted Wednesday to confirm that the flight was — at that time — scheduled to take off Saturday.

Marine tracking websites Thursday showed SpaceX's rocket landing platform continuing toward the recovery zone for the Falcon 9's first stage booster in the Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Canaveral. SpaceX plans to retrieve the first stage for reuse on a future mission.

The launch of the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C satellite will be SpaceX's 16th mission of the year — including launches from Florida and California — and the 16th launch from Cape Canaveral overall in 2018.

SpaceX test-fired the Falcon 9's first stage engines at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad Wednesday, then lowered the rocket for rollback to a nearby hangar, wh ere technicians planned to attach the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C spacecraft to the launcher.

The satellite will provide C-band and Ku-band communications services across the Asia-Pacific region from a perch in geostationary orbit nearly 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

The new satellite will launch into an elliptical transfer orbit aboard the Falcon 9, then use its on-board thruster to climb into a circular orbit, wh ere its orbital velocity will match the rate of Earth's rotation at 138 degrees east longitude.

Once Telstar 18 VANTAGE arrives at its operating post, it will beam high-throughput signals to serve direct-to-home broadcast, video distribution, maritime, and other telecom markets. Carrying a combination of broad regional beams and high-bandwidth spot beams, the satellite's coverage area will span from India and Pakistan in the west, to Hawaii in the east.

APT Satellite of Hong Kong — also known as APSTAR — paid for 57.5 percent of the mission's cost in exchange for use of the same percentage of the satellite's communications capacity.

SpaceX plans to roll the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket out of its hangar some time today, then erect the launcher vertical atop Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad in preparation for this evening's countdown.

Officials delayed the launch from Saturday to allow additional time to complete pre-launch checkouts, SpaceX said.

Built by SSL in Palo Alto, California, the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C satellite weighs more than 15,560 pounds (7,060 kilograms) at launch. It's heading for a perch in geostationary orbit over the equator at 138 degrees east longitude to provide broadband, television and cellular backhaul services across the Asia-Pacific region for Telesat and APT Satellite.

SpaceX plans to recover the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket aboard the company's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral in the Atlantic Ocean. Engineers hope to inspect, refurbish and re-fly the booster on a future mission.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for liftoff from Cape Canaveral on Monday, heading due east over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver the Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite into orbit around 32 minutes later.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket is poised for launch from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 11:28 p.m. EDT Sunday (0328 GMT Monday) at the opening of a four-hour launch window.
Спойлер
Perched atop the rocket is the Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite, a spacecraft manufactured by SSL — formerly known as Space Systems/Loral — and owned by Ottawa-based Telesat in partnership with APT Satellite of Hong Kong.

Telstar 18 VANTAGE weighs 15,564 pounds (7,060 kilograms) with its propellant tanks fully loaded, making it one of the heaviest commercial communications satellites ever launched, just shy of a record set in July with the launch of the Telstar 19 VANTAGE spacecraft on a previous Falcon 9 rocket.

After deployment from the upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket in an elliptical transfer orbit, Telstar 18 VANTAGE will use its on-board hydrazine-fueled engine and electric thrusters to boost itself into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

The U.S.-built, Canadian-owned satellite will beam C-band and Ku-band broadband services over the Asia-Pacific region.

APT Satellite — also known as APSTAR — paid for 57.5 percent of the mission's cost in exchange for use of the same percentage of the satellite's communications capacity.

The Falcon 9 rocket launching Telstar 18 VANTAGE will fly in the upgraded "Block 5" configuration, with a brand new first stage booster.

The timeline below outlines the launch sequence for the Falcon 9 flight with Telstar 18 VANTAGE.

Today's mission will mark the fifth flight of a Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage, an upgraded version of the Falcon 9 rocket featuring reliability and reusability enhancements.
Спойлер
SpaceX launched the first Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket May 11 with Bangladesh's first communications satellite. Officials heralded the successful debut as pivotal in allowing SpaceX to reduce the time and money needed to turn around a recovered booster for another mission.

The first Block 5 booster fr om the May 11 mission was re-flown last month during the launch of the Merah Putih communications satellite, then recovered a second time, potentially to be reused again.

The flight plan tonight calls for the Falcon 9's second stage to fire its engine twice, then deploy the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C payload into an elliptical, egg-shaped transfer orbit with a low point a few hundred miles above Earth, and a high point ranging tens of thousands of miles in altitude.

The Falcon 9 Block 5 will give the communications satellite a high-altitude lift while its first stage still retains enough propellant to return to a SpaceX drone ship parked in the Atlantic Ocean around 400 miles (650 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral.

The improved Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 has now launched four times with upgraded first and second stages together on the same flight.

The upgrades to the Falcon 9 Block 5 include a beefed up heat shield, retractable landing legs and other modifications to make the first stage simpler to reuse, reducing the refurbishment needed between missions.

Funded in partnership between Telesat and APT Satellite, the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C satellite will use its on-board chemical and electric propulsion systems to circularize its orbit at geostationary altitude more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator, reaching an operating post at 138 degrees east longitude.

After post-launch testing and deployments of the satellite's solar panels and antennas, Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C will enter service some time in mid-October, assuming all goes according to plan.

The new telecom craft, which weighs around 15,564 pounds (7,060 kilograms) at launch, was built by SSL in Palo Alto, California. It will replace the aging Telstar 18/APSTAR 5 satellite delivered to orbit by a Sea Launch Zenit 3SL rocket in 2004.

"We have an embedded base that's on Telstar 18 today that will migrate over to Telstar 18 VANTAGE," said Tom Eaton, Telesat's vice president of international sales, in a pre-launch interview. "So there's an element of continuity of service at play here by replacing the existing satellite, but Telstar 18 VANTAGE, since it's the third of our high-throughput satellites, carries a lot more flexibility, switchability in its coverages, and then has high-throughput capability as well."

Carrying a combination of broad regional beams and high-bandwidth spot beams, the satellite's coverage area will span from India and Pakistan in the west, to Hawaii in the east.

APT Satellite — also known as APSTAR — of Hong Kong will use 57.5 percent of the satellite's communications capacity, in exchange for funding 57.5 percent of the mission's total cost.

"Through (the) APSTAR 5C Satellite, we will be able to maintain reliable services to our existing customers of APSTAR 5 satellite, and to assure the continuity of their businesses," said Cheng Guangren, executive officer and president of APT Satellite, in a statement at the time of the satellite's procurement in 2015. "Meanwhile, (the) APSTAR 5C satellite will carry more transponders, expand to broader service areas, and include regional high-throughput (HTS) capacities to satisfy growing market demand in Asia-Pacific region."

The Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C spacecraft hosts two payloads -- one in C-band and another in Ku-band -- to provide services that range from direct-to-home television broadcasting, to Internet connectivity, to cellular phone bandwidth.

"With this newly-designed satellite, markets that we're looking at, I'd say top of mind would be the mobility market in Asia, which is rapidly growing," Eaton said. "Maritime is what we typically think of, but also aero, so connectivity to aircraft. The other applications are, the Asia-Pacific region is one that's in need of continuity for remote communities, especially when you look at a country like Indonesia, wh ere they have a government initiative to connect all of the country, and satellite is the best way to do that.

"Another area in the telecom space is backhaul for cellular and mobility towers, and there's a fair amount of oil and gas and mineral exploration that satellite supports, so we're interested in that market, as well as there are some DTH (direct-to-home television broadcast) opportunities," Eaton said.

09:00 10.09.2018

For the second time in seven weeks, SpaceX, Telesat and SSL teamed up for a commercial satellite launch fr om Cape Canaveral early Monday, this time successfully deploying into orbit a high-power telecom payload developed in a joint venture with a Hong Kong-based company.

The Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite, also known as APSTAR 5C, was released into orbit by the Falcon 9's second stage around 32 minutes after liftoff, which occurred at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) Monday.

The Falcon 9's thundering departure fr om Cape Canaveral occurred more than an hour later than planned, a delay to allow pop-up thunderstorms to clear the spaceport.
Спойлер
Once the storms moved offshore, the Falcon 9 launch team gave a "go" to kick off an automated computer-run countdown sequencer, and super-chilled RP-1 kerosene and cryogenic liquid oxygen began flowing into the rocket at T-minus 35 minutes.

After running through a pre-flight steering check, the Falcon 9 switched to internal power and pressurized its propellant tanks before firing its nine Merlin main engines three seconds before liftoff.

Hold-down clamps opened to release the rocket moments later, and the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) soared into the sky, heading east over the Atlantic Ocean to steer its payload toward an eventual perch over the equator.

The slender rocket fired through scattered clouds with 1.7 million pounds of ground-shaking thrust, arcing downrange before releasing its first stage to come back to Earth.

As the Falcon 9's booster stage aimed for a SpaceX recovery barge in the Atlantic, the upper stage lit its single engine to propel the mission's commercial satellite payload — valued at more than $200 million — into orbit.

The upper stage engine shut down a little more than eight minutes after liftoff after placing the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C communications satellite in a preliminary parking orbit. Moments later, the Falcon 9's first stage fell out of darkness — with an engine blazing — and set down on SpaceX's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" parked roughly 400 miles (650 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral.

The first stage from Monday's mission will be inspected, and likely reused on a future SpaceX launch. The landing was the 29th time SpaceX has recovered one of its Falcon boosters intact since the company first accomplished the feat in December 2015.

But the Falcon 9's job was not complete, and the upper stage engine reignited for a critical second burn to raise the height of its orbit closer to the satellite's eventual operating post.

The second upper stage firing resulted in an on-target orbit, SpaceX said, and live video downlinked through a ground station showed the Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C spacecraft flying away from the rocket 32 minutes into the flight in sunlight over Africa.

A spokesperson with Telesat, the Ottawa, Ontario-based owner and operator of the spacecraft, said ground controllers received the first signals from the new satellite shortly after deployment from the Falcon 9, confirming it survived the launch.

Tracking data published by the U.S. military showed the satellite was placed in an orbit ranging between 161 miles (260 kilometers) and 11,225 miles (18,066 kilometers), with an inclination of 27 degrees to the equator.

The heavyweight spacecraft weighed more than 15,560 pounds (about 7,060 kilograms) at launch. Much of that weight comes a hefty load of liquid propellant to be consumed placing the satellite in its operational orbit.

Next up for the satellite, built by SSL in Palo Alto, California, is a sequence of orbit-raising maneuvers using a combination of its liquid-fueled rocket engine and electric thrusters.

The satellite will circularize its orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator, extend its power-generating solar panels, and unfurl a set of antennas before commencing a test campaign. Once the testing is completed, Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C is expected to enter commercial service next month.

The satellite will park itself in geostationary orbit at 138 degrees east longitude, wh ere it will match Earth's rotation and replace the aging Telstar 18/APSTAR 5 spacecraft launched in 2004.

The Telstar 18 VANTAGE/APSTAR 5C spacecraft hosts two payloads — one in C-band and another in Ku-band — to provide services that range from direct-to-home television broadcasting, to Internet connectivity, to cellular phone bandwidth.

"With this newly-designed satellite, markets that we're looking at ... would be the mobility market in Asia, which is rapidly growing," Eaton said. "Maritime is what we typically think of, but also aero, so connectivity to aircraft."

In-flight WiFi for airline passengers traveling across Asia and neighboring oceans, plus Internet services for tourists on cruise ships, will be prime markets within Telesat's reach with the new satellite.

"Those are markets that, with this satellite, we'll be able to provide solutions for our customers, wh ere we otherwise couldn't with Telstar 18," Eaton said.

"The Asia-Pacific region is one that's in need of connectivity for remote communities, especially when you look at a country like Indonesia, wh ere they have a government initiative to connect all of the country, and satellite is the best way to do that," Eaton said. "Another area in the telecom space is backhaul for cellular and mobility towers, and there's a fair amount of oil and gas and mineral exploration that satellite supports, so we're interested in that market, as well as there are some DTH (direct-to-home television broadcast) opportunities," Eaton said.

Monday's launch was delayed from last month to allow SpaceX to complete work to ensure the rocket was ready for liftoff.

The mission was a reunion between SpaceX, Telesat and SSL after the successful launch of the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite July 22, which also used a Falcon 9 rocket with an SSL-built spacecraft.

Telesat announced the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite, which provides telecom services over the Americas, became operational in late August.

"The timing just worked out that these were going to be close, so we've been anticipating that," Eaton said before Monday's launch. "In terms the mood and the attitude at Telesat, it's just what we do. Everybody has been on pins and needles to get Telstar 18 VANTAGE launched. Telstar 19 VANTAGE was just a stellar performance by SpaceX, and I would say by Maxar (SSL) as well because everything is working well."

Going into Monday's launch, APSTAR operated five geostationary communications satellites, while Telesat counted 16 geostationary telecom craft in its fleet, in addition to a pathfinder satellite for a planned broadband network in low Earth orbit.

Monday's mission was the 16th SpaceX launch of the year, and the 34th consecutive successful flight by SpaceX's Falcon rocket family since an on-pad explosion in 2016.

The launch company's next flight is scheduled for Oct. 7, when a Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with Argentina's SAOCOM 1A Earth observation satellite. That mission is expected to feature the first return of a Falcon 9 booster to land in California.

September 12, 2018 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2018/09/) | Stephen Clark (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/stephen-clark/)

SpaceX brought another Falcon 9 booster into Port Canaveral on Wednesday, a little more than two days after landing the rocket on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean as the company enters an unusually quiescent period of launch activity in Florida — at least by recent standards.

The rocket arrived at Port Canaveral around 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) Wednesday aboard SpaceX's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" after a two-day trek fr om the booster's landing point in the Atlantic Ocean around 400 miles (650 kilometers) east of Florida's Space Coast.

The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) Monday fr om Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad, carrying the Telstar 18 VANTAGE communications satellite into orbit. The Telstar 18 VANTAGE spacecraft, also known as APSTAR 5C, was developed in a joint venture between Ottawa, Ontario-based Telesat and APT Satellite of Hong Kong.

The high-power satellite will raise its orbit to geostationary altitude in the coming weeks, parking itself along the equator at 138 degrees east longitude, wh ere it will replace the aging Telstar 18/APSTAR 5 spacecraft to expand broadband, television broadcast and cellular connectivity across the Asia-Pacific.

The Falcon 9's first stage fired for the first two-and-a-half minutes of Monday's mission with Telstar 18 VANTAGE, then shut down and dropped away from the rocket's second stage, which continued the trip into orbit. The first stage descended to a propulsive, precision touchdown on SpaceX's rocket recovery barge about eight-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

That landing marked the 29th time SpaceX has recovered a first stage booster, and the 18th successful landing at sea.

Crews at the port hoisted the 15-story rocket stage off the drone ship a few hours after it docked Wednesday, moving it to an onshore cradle wh ere technicians will prepare it to be lowered horizontal for the trip to a nearby hangar for inspections and refurbishment.

The launch with Telstar 18 VANTAGE was the fifth time SpaceX has flown the latest generation of the Falcon 9 first stage, known as Block 5.
Спойлер

The Falcon 9 Block 5 debuted in May with the launch of a satellite for Bangladesh, and the first stage recovered from that mission launched again last month with the Merah Putih communications craft, then landed a second time for a possible third flight.

A previous Telesat satellite launched in July from Cape Canaveral aboard a newly-built Block 5 first stage, and the most recent batch of 10 Iridium voice and data relay satellites also flew on a new Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket from California the same month. Telstar 18 VANTAGE's launch Monday also used a Block 5 booster fresh from SpaceX's factory.

All of the Block 5 first stages launched to date have successfully landed.

SpaceX says the Block 5 first stage sports upgrades to reduce the time and money required to ready the boosters for re-flights. The latest version of the Falcon 9 booster carries a beefed up heat shield, improved landing legs, and titanium grid fins SpaceX says can be reused, replacing aluminum fins that had to be replaced before launching the same rocket again.

Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and chief executive, told reporters in May that each Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage could be launched 10 times without significant refurbishment. With overhauls, reach rocket could launch up to 100 times before retirement, he said, adding that SpaceX would re-fly the same Block 5 booster in less than 24 hours as soon as next year.

That goal remains on track for 2019, according to Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, who spoke on a panel at Euroconsult's World Satellite Business Week meeting Tuesday in Paris. She said the time needed to refurbish a Block 5 booster is now down to four weeks, according to an account of her remarks shared on social media.

Shotwell: Falcon 9 first stages come back in much better shape than anticipated. Have refurbishment time down to four weeks; goal is still a one-day turnaround next year.

SpaceX's first re-flight of a Falcon 9 first stage in March 2017, which used a previous iteration of the rocket, came nearly one year after the booster's first launch. The first reuse of a Block 5 booster Aug. 7 occurred less than three months after that vehicle's inaugural flight.

Musk also said in May that SpaceX's cut its price for a Falcon 9 rocket flight from around $60 million to $50 million for missions using a recycled first stage booster, with further price reductions planned as the company launches more reused rockets and recoups expenditures made during development of the Falcon 9's recovery and re-flight capability.

With the Telstar 18 VANTAGE mission in the books, SpaceX's next launch is scheduled no earlier than Oct. 7 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, with Argentina's SAOCOM 1A Earth observation satellite. That flight is expected to be the first to attempt a return of the booster to SpaceX's landing pad at the California military base.

Rocket landings on missions launched from California so far have occurred on a drone ship downrange in the Pacific Ocean.

SpaceX typically determines whether to return a booster to a touchdown on land or at sea based on the mass of the satellite and the type of orbit targeted on each mission.

The SAOCOM 1A mission will be followed by at least two additional Falcon 9 launches before the end of the year from the Vandenberg spaceport, which is suited for flights heading into orbits that fly around Earth pole-to-pole.

One of the launches from California will haul up to 71 microsatellites and CubeSats into a polar, sun-synchronous orbit for numerous satellites owners, including NASA, the U.S. military, and U.S. and international research institutions. Spaceflight, a Seattle-based rideshare launch broker, is arranging the launch after purchasing the full capacity of a Falcon 9 mission.

The final planned satellite deployment for Iridium's new-generation mobile telecom fleet is scheduled in November, again with a Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg.

At SpaceX's launch base in Florida, there are no Falcon missions planned until at least November. The gap in launch activity is set to be the longest break in SpaceX missions from Cape Canaveral since the Falcon 9 rocket returned to service in early 2017 following an explosion on the launch pad the previous year.

But the lack of missions in the next couple of months does not mean SpaceX will be on the sidelines at the Florida launch site. One major project that will continue is the outfitting of launch pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center to begin supporting launches of SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft, a human-rated capsule in development to transport NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

SpaceX says the first orbital test flight of the Crew Dragon — without any astronauts on-board — is scheduled for no sooner than November from pad 39A, setting the stage for a demo mission with a two-man crew next year. An unpiloted resupply launch to the International Space Station with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and a cargo version of the Dragon capsule is scheduled for Nov. 27 from neighboring pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The U.S. Air Force says the first in a new series of GPS navigation satellites is set to ride a Falcon 9 rocket into orbit from Cape Canaveral on Dec. 15. Another commercial communications satellite launch may also fit into SpaceX's schedule from Florida before the end of the year.

The launch range at Cape Canaveral will not be entirely quiet next month. A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket is set for liftoff Oct. 17 with an Air Force communications payload, and an air-dropped Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket will be deployed over the Atlantic Ocean east of Florida in October carrying a long-delayed NASA science satellite.

So far in 2018, SpaceX has launched 16 missions, including the maiden flight of its Falcon Heavy rocket. Twelve of those flights originated from Cape Canaveral, at an average pace of one SpaceX launch from Florida every three weeks.

SpaceX logged 18 Falcon 9 flights in 2017, setting a record for the busiest year of launches in the company's history that should be broken again before the end of December.

Additional photos of the Falcon 9 first stage at Port Canaveral on Monday are posted below.

Thank goodness the stoplight was green or they might have needed to deploy the grid fins! #SpaceX (https://twitter.com/hashtag/SpaceX?src=hash) More pics and video later.

There are very few things we can watch SpaceX develop. In Port Canaveral, we are lucky to get a glimpse of that. This video was shot over a three-day period. Hours of footage had to be both sped up to x3000 or skipped. We do not know the exact material used to lubricate the cylinder joints. Let us know if you do. Next video also unique looking at the evolution of "BLLR", (The Blur" ) or what used to be a simple lift cap.
