July 18, 2018 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2018/07/) | Stephen Clark (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/stephen-clark/)

07/18/2018 08:57 Stephen Clark

SpaceX is preparing this week for the second flight of the upgraded "Block 5" version of the company's Falcon 9 rocket, with a hold-down firing of the booster planned Wednesday at Cape Canaveral ahead of a middle-of-the-night launch this weekend with a Canadian-owned commercial communications satellite.

The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to be test-fired at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad during a window between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EDT (1400-2000 GMT) Wednesday.
Спойлер
The brief ignition of the Falcon 9's nine Merlin main engines will occur as hold-down restraints keep the launcher firmly grounded at the pad.

SpaceX uses the customary pre-launch static fire test as a countdown rehearsal and a final tune-up to ensure the launch team, rocket and ground systems are ready for liftoff.

The Falcon 9 will be removed from its launch mount and rolled back to a hangar near the pad for attachment of the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite later this week.

Owned by Telesat and built by SSL, the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite will provide high-throughput Ku-band and Ka-band communications services, supporting broadband applications over South America, the Caribbean, the North Atlantic and Canada.

Launch from Cape Canaveral is scheduled for a four-hour window opening at 1:50 a.m. EDT (0550 GMT) Sunday.

The Falcon 9 rocket will send the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite, the first of two Telesat comsats set to fly with SpaceX in the next month, toward its perch in geostationary orbit some 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

SpaceX plans to recover the Falcon 9's first stage using the company's drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

It will be the second launch of SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, the latest version of the company's workhorse launcher featuring performance and reliability improvements, along with modifications to make the first stage easier to retrieve and reuse.

Nine Merlin engines on the first stage of SpaceX's next Falcon 9 rocket briefly fired up on a Cape Canaveral launch pad Thursday, and the launcher cleared a customary pre-flight checkout in preparation for liftoff early Sunday with a Canadian-owned communications satellite.

The Falcon 9 ignited its engines at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) Wednesday at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad. Hold-down restraints kept the launcher firmly on the ground as the Merlin engines throttled up to full power for several seconds before shutting down, sending a plume of exhaust into an overcast sky over the Florida spaceport.

SpaceX confirmed the static fire test in a tweet minutes later, and ground crews planned to remove the rocket from the launch pad and roll it back into a nearby hangar for attachment of the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite, a U.S.-built, Canadian-owned craft set to launch on a 15-year mission to beam broadband services over the Americas.

The rocket will return to the launch pad Saturday ahead of a four-hour launch window opening at 1:50 a.m. EDT (0550 GMT) Sunday.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE is the first of two spacecraft owned by Telesat, a telecom satellite operator based on Ottawa, scheduled for launch this summer on Falcon 9 rockets. Another spacecraft, named Telstar 18 VANTAGE, is set for liftoff no earlier than Aug. 17.

The Falcon 9 rocket set for launch with Telstar 19 VANTAGE this weekend will be the second of SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 launch vehicles to fly, following a successful debut of the new-generation rocket configuration in May. The Falcon 9 Block 5 features improvements aimed at making the rocket's first stage easier to reuse, safety and reliability upgrades, plus higher-performing engines to lift heavier payloads into orbit.

The Falcon 9 Block 5's external appearance has also changed from previous Falcon 9 versions, with a black interstage and black landing legs at the base of the first stage.

SpaceX plans to retrieve the first stage on Sunday's launch aboard a drone ship positioned in the Atlantic Ocean east of Cape Canaveral.

Built in Palo Alto, California, by SSL, formerly known as Space Systems/Loral, the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite will be parked in geostationary orbit at 63 degrees west longitude, alongside the Telstar 14R satellite launched in 2011.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE carries Ku-band and Ka-band payloads, with coverage extending from Northern Canada to South America for broadband connectivity. The new satellite will also provide airborne Internet services for aircraft traveling on trans-Atlantic routes between North America and Europe.

The weather forecast for Sunday's early morning launch window calls for a 60 percent probability of favorable conditions for liftoff.

A frontal system is forecast to arrive in Central Florida on Saturday, allowing the typical summertime afternoon showers and thunderstorms to linger later in the night than usual, according to an outlook issued by the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron.

The forecast predicts isolated rain showers during the launch window, with a few clouds at 2,500 feet, scattered clouds at 12,000 feet, and a broken deck at 22,000 feet. Winds should be from the west-southwest at 15 to 20 mph, with a temperature of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The primary weather concerns Sunday are with violating the thick cloud and cumulus cloud rules.

Similar weather conditions are forecast during a backup launch window early Monday.

The launch Sunday with Telstar 19 VANTAGE will be SpaceX's 13th mission of the year, and the company plans another Falcon 9 launch three days later. Crews at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, are preparing another Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket for liftoff July 25 with 10 Iridium voice and data relay satellites.

SpaceX's launch schedule will return to Cape Canaveral with another Falcon 9 flight no earlier than Aug. 2 with an Indonesian communications satellite.

A huge U.S.-built, Canadian-owned communications satellite weighing 15,600 pounds, the heaviest spacecraft of its kind ever launched, is mounted to a Falcon 9 rocket for liftoff early Sunday from Cape Canaveral on a heavy-lifting mission that previously would have required SpaceX to throw away the launcher's first stage booster.

The Telstar 19 VANTAGE spacecraft is set to kick off a 15-year mission beaming broadband services across the Americas, and connecting airline passengers to WiFi over the North Atlantic Ocean.

Liftoff of the satellite atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad is scheduled for a four-hour window opening at 1:50 a.m. EDT (0550 GMT) Sunday.

There is a 60 percent probability of favorable weather during the launch window. The chief concern is that afternoon and evening thunderstorms could linger late into the night, violating the thick cloud and cumulus cloud weather rules.
Спойлер
Sunday's mission will be the second flight using SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage, the latest generation in a series of step-by-step enhancements intended to boost the launcher's performance, while introducing changes to allow the booster to be easier to recover and reuse.

SpaceX launched the first Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket May 11 with Bangladesh's first communications satellite. Officials heralded the successful debut as pivotal in allowing SpaceX to reduce the time and money needed to turn around a recovered booster for another mission.

Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, told reporters in May that a Block 5 first stage could be flown 10 times with little changes other than refueling, and up to 100 times with more significant refurbishment. At the time, Musk said SpaceX plans to re-fly a Falcon 9 first stage as quickly as 24 hours after its previous mission as soon as next year.

The enhancements include a beefed-up thermal protection system to better shield the rocket against re-entry heating. SpaceX introduced new black coatings on the interstage and landing legs, and the Falcon 9's first stage engine section, or octaweb, is bolted on to the vehicle in the new configuration, rather than welded to the first stage.

He said the nine Merlin engines on the Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket can generate 8 percent more thrust at sea level, up to around 190,000 pounds of thrust each. The Merlin engine on the Falcon 9's second stage also received a performance upgrade.

Since the first Falcon 9 Block 5 mission in May, SpaceX has launched three Falcon 9 flights using a mix of new Block 5 upper stages and reused Block 4 first stages. Sunday's mission will be the second employing all-Block 5 hardware.

The extra lift capability of the Falcon 9 Block 5 will allow the rocket to send the nearly 15,600-pound (7,075-kilogram) Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite toward its operational perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

The flight plan calls for the Falcon 9's second stage to fire its engine twice, then deploy the Telstar 19 VANTAGE payload into an elliptical, egg-shaped transfer orbit with a low point a few hundred miles above Earth, and a high point ranging tens of thousands of miles in altitude.

Following the company's standard policy, SpaceX has not released the exact parameters of the orbit targeted on Sunday's mission. Other commercial launch providers typically publish such data in advance of their missions.

The Falcon 9 Block 5 will give the communications satellite, owned by Ottawa-based Telesat, a high-altitude lift while its first stage still retains enough propellant to return to a SpaceX drone ship parked in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral.

Hauling such a heavy satellite toward a high-altitude geostationary transfer orbit would have required earlier versions of the Falcon 9 to devote all of their first stage propellants toward the launch, leaving insufficient leftover fuel for descent maneuvers.

The Falcon 9's first stage reignites a subset of its engines to target landings at sea or on land, then extends four landing legs while using its center engine to brake for touchdown. The extra engine restarts require extra fuel, eating into the mass the Falcon 9 can send into orbit.

Sunday's launch will be SpaceX's 13th mission of the year, and the 58th flight of a Falcon 9 rocket since the first version of the launcher debuted in 2010. SpaceX will try for its 26th rocket landing Sunday.

Manufactured by SSL, formerly known as Space Systems/Loral, in Palo Alto, California, the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite is the first of two SSL-built, Telesat-owned telecom craft set for launch on Falcon 9 rockets this summer. The Telstar 18 VANTAGE satellite is scheduled for liftoff from Cape Canaveral on another Falcon 9 flight no earlier than Aug. 17.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE will become the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched, eclipsing a record set by the TerreStar 1 telecom spacecraft, which weighed 15,234 pounds (6,910 kilograms) when it rode an Ariane 5 rocket into orbit July 2009.

It is also set to be the heaviest satellite ever launched by SpaceX into geostationary transfer orbit, the drop-off for most commercial telecom payloads.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE will use its own hydrazine-fueled engine to circularize its orbit after separation from the Falcon 9 rocket, climbing into a circular geostationary perch nearly 22,300 miles over the equator at 63 degrees west longitude. In that position, Telstar 19 VANTAGE's orbital velocity will match the speed of Earth's rotation, allowing it to hover over a fixed geographic point.

Once the satellite unfurls its power-generating solar wings and communications antennas, Telesat will bring the newest member of its fleet into service by late August, a company spokesperson said.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE will operate in the same geostationary slot as the Telstar 14R satellite deployed in 2011, which encountered a failure in one of its solar arrays shortly after launch, diminishing its capability.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE carries Ku-band and Ka-band payloads, with coverage extending from Northern Canada to South America for broadband connectivity. The new satellite will also provide airborne Internet services for aircraft traveling on trans-Atlantic routes between North America and Europe.

"Telstar 19 VANTAGE is a state-of-the-art high-throughput satellite that will be co-located with our Telstar 14R satellite to expand our services over the Americas, the Caribbean and the North Atlantic," said Dan Goldberg, president and CEO of Telesat. "The satellite has a mix of Ka- and Ku-band capacity."

"The Ka-band capacity for South America is already under a 15-year contract with Hughes Network Systems and our long-standing customer Bell Canada has entered into a 15-year contract for substantially all of the satellite's Ka-band capacity over Northern Canada, which means that all of the satellite's Ka-band capacity serving that region is already under contract."

Goldberg said about a third of the new satellite's Ku-band communications capacity has been pre-sold.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for liftoff from Cape Canaveral on Monday, heading due east over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite into orbit around 32 minutes later.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket is poised for launch from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 12:50 a.m. EDT (0450 GMT) Sunday at the opening of a four-hour launch window.

Perched atop the rocket is the Telstar 19 VANTAGE communications satellite, a spacecraft manufactured by SSL — formerly known as Space Systems/Loral — and owned by Ottawa-based Telesat.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE weighs 15,597 pounds (7,075 kilograms) with its propellant tanks fully loaded, making it the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched.

The U.S.-built, Canadian-owned satellite will beam Ka-band and Ku-band broadband services over the Americas from northern Canada to South America, with a additional coverage providing in-flight WiFi to airliners traveling the North Atlantic Ocean. Telstar 19 VANTAGE is designed for a 15-year mission, and it's the first of two SSL-built, Telesat-owned spacecraft launching on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets this summer.

After deployment from the upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket in an elliptical transfer orbit, Telstar 19 VANTAGE will use its on-board hydrazine-fueled engine to boost itself into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

The Falcon 9 rocket launching Telstar 19 VANTAGE will fly in the upgraded "Block 5" configuration. It will be the second Falcon 9 Block 5 launch after the new rocket version debuted in May.

The timeline below outlines the launch sequence for the Falcon 9 flight with Telstar 19 VANTAGE.

T-minus 2 hours, 55 minutes. Final countdown preparations are underway at Cape Canaveral as teams prepare a Falcon 9 rocket for liftoff at 1:50 a.m. EDT (0550 GMT).

Fueling of the Falcon 9 rocket will begin at 1:15 a.m. EDT (0515 GMT), three minutes after the SpaceX launch team will be electronically polled for their "go" to proceed into the final countdown.

Super-chilled, densified kerosene and liquid oxygen will be simultaneously pumped into the Falcon 9's first stage beginning at T-minus 35 minutes. Liquid oxygen will begin flowing into the second stage at T-minus 16 minutes.

In the final 10 minutes of the countdown, an automatic sequencer will command the Falcon 9's first stage engines to be chilled in preparation for ignition, the rocket's navigation computer will be configured for flight, its upper stage engine will run through a steering profile, and the launch pad's strongback will be retracted around 1.5 degrees away from the rocket.

In terms of trends, Shotwell sees a trend of a bifurcation in the market. She says there are a couple of satellite providers making their satellites bigger. "Some of that is basically putting a giant satellite on Falcon 9 with a lot of propellant, which would normally be a very heavy satellite, even potentially hard for Falcon 9 to throw. But when you put so much propellant on that satellite, they can get themselves to orbit even from a sub-synch. A couple of manufacturers are doing that ... [sending] an over 7-ton satellite on Falcon 9 to GTO. We are seeing a number of satellite manufacturers come around and do that just because of the value proposition presented by Falcon 9." But SpaceX is also seeing a lot of smaller satellites that are really a half bay Falcon 9 capability. "Spaceflight services, for one, is trying to match folks for us and fly on Falcon 9s. We are seeing a little bit more of that this year than we have in the past," she adds.

Today's mission will be the second flight using SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 first stage, the latest generation in a series of step-by-step enhancements intended to boost the launcher's performance, while introducing changes to allow the booster to be easier to recover and reuse.

SpaceX launched the first Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket May 11 with Bangladesh's first communications satellite. Officials heralded the successful debut as pivotal in allowing SpaceX to reduce the time and money needed to turn around a recovered booster for another mission.

Спойлер
The flight plan calls for the Falcon 9's second stage to fire its engine twice, then deploy the Telstar 19 VANTAGE payload into an elliptical, egg-shaped transfer orbit with a low point a few hundred miles above Earth, and a high point ranging tens of thousands of miles in altitude.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE carries Ku-band and Ka-band payloads, with coverage extending from Northern Canada to South America for broadband connectivity. The new satellite will also provide airborne Internet services for aircraft traveling on trans-Atlantic routes between North America and Europe.

An upgraded model of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket fired into orbit early Sunday from Florida's Space Coast, hoisting a record-setting 7.8-ton communications satellite for Telesat toward its planned perch more than 22,000 miles over the equator.

Riding a red-hot rocket plume from its nine Merlin 1D engines, the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket climbed away from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad at 1:50 a.m. EDT (0550 GMT) Sunday.
Спойлер
At the tip of the rocket was the Telstar 19 VANTAGE spacecraft, a U.S.-built, Canadian-owned broadband station that set a record for the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched.

The Falcon 9 lit its main engines after a smooth countdown, and hold-down clamps opened to release the launcher for an on-time liftoff.

Burning a combination of kerosene and liquid oxygen, the rocket's main engines throttled up to 1.7 million pounds of thrust to send the Falcon 9 into a starry sky, arcing to the east from Cape Canaveral over the Atlantic Ocean to dispatch the Telstar 19 VANTAGE spacecraft toward its equatorial operating orbit.

Two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff, the first stage engines shut down and the booster detached moments before the Falcon 9's second stage engine ignited to continue the trek into space.

The first stage accomplished a pinpoint landing nearly nine minutes into the mission, descending to SpaceX's drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" parked in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Florida, and notching the company's 26th successful rocket recovery. SpaceX is expected to bring the rocket back to Cape Canaveral for inspections, and will likely re-fly the booster on a future mission.

Meanwhile, the upper stage engine shut down after reaching a preliminary parking orbit. The rocket, with Telstar 19 VANTAGE still attached, coasted across the Atlantic Ocean before reigniting its upper engine over Africa for a planned 50-second firing to raise its orbit.

After a brief telemetry outage, SpaceX's launch team confirmed the second firing of the upper stage engine nailed its objective, placing the Telstar 19 VANTAGE spacecraft into an on-target orbit.

An on-board camera showed a live view of the telecom payload separating from the upper stage nearly 33 minutes after launch, and a Telesat spokesperson confirmed ground controllers established contact with the newly-launched satellite as planned.

Carrying its own rocket fuel, the nearly 15,600-pound (7,075-kilogram) satellite was expected to be released into an egg-shaped transfer orbit with a perigee, or low point, a few hundred miles above Earth and an apogee, or high point, somewh ere below the its final operating altitude of nearly 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers). The spacecraft will use a hydrazine-fueled engine to finish the climb into a circular geostationary perch over the equator.

Following the company's standard policy, SpaceX did not release the exact parameters of the orbit targeted on Sunday's mission. Other commercial launch providers typically publish such data in advance of their missions.

Telecom spacecraft destined for geostationary orbit are usually deployed into elliptical transfer orbits with apogees, or high points, at or above the satellites' final operating altitude. But the Falcon 9's first stage keeps a fuel reserve for landing maneuvers, reducing the energy and speed it can give the rocket's payload on ascent.

Heavy geostationary satellites launched on past Falcon 9 flights have flown on expendable versions of the SpaceX rocket, which devote all their propellant to their payloads. But the more economical alternative is to recover the rocket, restricting its ability to place a satellite into such a high-altitude orbit.

The tradeoff for satellite owners and manufacturers is they must load more fuel into their spacecraft to make up the difference.

Several satellite operators have apparently accepted the arrangement, including Telesat and the Spanish telecom company Hispasat, which agreed with SpaceX to deploy one its satellites placed into a sub-geostationary transfer orbit in March.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE should arrive in geostationary orbit within a couple of weeks, then enter service by the end of August at 63 degrees west longitude after completing tests and commissioning, along with deployments of solar panels and antennas.

Satellites in geostationary orbit circle the planet at the same rate it rotates, keeping spacecraft in lock-step with the same geographic position. Geostationary orbit is a popular home for satellites because the orbit allows ground-based antennas to point at a constant location in the sky to link up with telecom spacecraft.

Manufactured by SSL, formerly known as Space Systems/Loral, in Palo Alto, California, the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite became the heaviest commercial communications satellite ever launched, eclipsing a record set by the TerreStar 1 telecom spacecraft, which weighed 15,234 pounds (6,910 kilograms) when it rode an Ariane 5 rocket into orbit July 2009.

The new satellite will also provide airborne Internet services for aircraft traveling on trans-Atlantic routes between North America and Europe, plus communications reach into the Caribbean for cruise ships and other ocean-going vessels.

Bell Canada subsidiary Northwestel, a service provider in Northern Canada, will use Telstar 19 VANTAGE's high-throughput capacity to the territory of Nunavut.

"Making high-quality broadband services available to remote communities across the vast expanse of Canada's north is a huge challenge," said Curtis Shaw, chief operating officer at Northwestel, in a statement last year when Bell Canada and Telesat announced their agreement. "Northwestel looks forward to utilizing the power and capabilities of Telesat's new state-of-the-art Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite as part of our commitment to connect 25 communities across Nunavut to faster and more reliable broadband over the next two years."

The Ka-band capacity purchased by Hughes will reach customers in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Goldberg said about a third of the new satellite's Ku-band communications capacity has been pre-sold.

Sunday's launch was the 58th flight of a Falcon 9 rocket since the first version of the launcher debuted in 2010, and the second Falcon 9 mission to employ all of SpaceX's newest upgrades.

The enhanced version of the Falcon 9, known as Block 5, launched for the first time May 11. Since then, SpaceX has launched three rockets with a mix of upgraded Block 5-generation upper stages and re-flown earlier-generation first stage boosters.

The launch of Telstar 19 VANTAGE was the second time SpaceX has flown an "all-Block 5" Falcon 9 rocket, which features improvements in performance and reusability.

SpaceX ground crews at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California are readying another Falcon 9 Block 5 launcher for liftoff at 4:39 a.m. PDT (7:39 a.m. EDT; 1139 GMT) Wednesday with 10 Iridium voice and data relay satellites. Another Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral is scheduled for no earlier than Aug. 2 at 1:19 a.m. EDT (0519 GMT) with Telkom Indonesia's Merah Putih communications satellite.

That will be followed by another SpaceX launch for Telesat, carrying the Telstar 18 VANTAGE spacecraft, no earlier than Aug. 17 from Cape Canaveral.

F9-59, the second "Block 5" variant of the Falcon 9 v1.2 design, orbited Telstar 19 VANTAGE, the heaviest-ever-at-launch commercial communications satellite, from Cape Canaveral SLC 40 on July 22, 2018. Telstar 19V separated into a subsynchronous transfer orbit about 32 minutes 40 seconds after the 05:50 UTC liftoff, following two burns by the Falcon 9 second stage. It was the first Block 5 launch from SLC 40.

The SSL 1300 series satellite weighed 7,075 kg at liftoff from SLC 40. Telstar 19V weighed more than 6,910 kg TerreStar 1, orbited by Ariane 5 in July 2009, but the latter was sent to a full geosynchronous transfer orbit and so needed to burn less of its own propellant to reach its final orbit.  Falcon 9 only lifted Telstar 19V to a 243 x 17,863 km x 27 deg orbit, while VA-189 sent TerreStar 1 to a 250 x 35,786 km x 6 deg orbit.

The upgraded Block 5 Merlin 1D engines produced a total of 775.65 tonnes (1.71 million pounds) thrust at sea level. The second stage likely produced 99.79 tonnes (220,000 pounds) of thrust. First stage number B1047 burned for about 2 min 30 sec, before separating to perform reentry and landing burns to land on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship postioned downrange. The second stage performed a planned 5 min 38 sec first burn to reach a parking orbit at T+8 min 12 sec. The stage restarted at T+26 min 49 sec for a 50 second long second burn.

Telstar 19V will operate from 63 degrees West after it raises itself to geostationary orbit. It will cover the Americas using Ku and Ka-band transponders.

B1047 was test fired at McGregor, Texas during late April or early May, 2018 and was briefly hot fired at LC 40 with the second stage but no payload attached, on July 18, 2018.

A total of 26 Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy core and booster stages have now been recovered in 32 attempts, including 2 of 3 Falcon Heavy stage landing tries. Four of the successful landings have been on "Just Read the Instructions" off California, 10 at Cape Canaveral LZ 1, one at LZ 2, and 11 on the drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" off Florida. Twenty individual first stages have been recovered. Fourteen have flown twice, eight of which were expended during their second flights. All of the recovered stages have been v1.2 types.

Operating from Telesat's prime orbital location of 63 degrees West, the same as Telesat's highly utilized Telstar 14R satellite, Telstar 19 VANTAGE will bring a new level of performance and value for satellite broadband requirements on land, at sea and in the air. It will have distinct zones of coverage across the Americas and Atlantic, combining broad regional beams and high throughput spot beams in Ku-band with additional HTS spot beams in Ka-band. Through these innovative capacity and coverage options, Telstar 19 VANTAGE will deliver important advantages to Telesat customers who serve growing consumer, enterprise and mobility markets.

As previously announced, Hughes Network Systems LLC (Hughes) has signed a 15-year agreement for Telstar 19 VANTAGE Ka-band capacity that Hughes will utilize to expand its broadband satellite services for consumers and businesses in five South American countries. Hughes will refer to this capacity as "Hughes 63 West."

Telesat also has long-term contracts for the entire Ka-band capacity of Telstar 19 VANTAGE over Northern Canada, including providing Bell Canada subsidiary Northwestel with the HTS spot beam capacity required to enhance broadband connectivity for all 25 communities in Nunavut, Canada's northernmost territory.

"The pre-launch agreements Telesat has secured with Hughes and Bell Canada, combined with strong interest from other leading satellite service providers across the Americas and Atlantic, confirm that Telstar 19 VANTAGE delivers superior performance and value for today's bandwidth intensive applications," said Dan Goldberg, Telesat's President and CEO. "The design and capabilities of Telstar 19 VANTAGE enable our customers to provide more advanced satellite broadband to their end users. We would like to thank SpaceX for the successful launch of Telstar 19 VANTAGE and for their dedication and professionalism throughout this mission. In a few weeks, Telesat will again be working with SpaceX for the launch of our next satellite, Telstar 18 VANTAGE over Asia."

Telesat's Newest Satellite

SpaceX successfully launched Telstar 19 VANTAGE to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) aboard a new Falcon 9 rocket. Liftoff from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was at 1:50am ET on Sunday, July 22nd. About 33 minutes after liftoff, Telesat's newest satellite with a launch mass of 7,080 kg was deployed from the Falcon 9. Ku-band coverages of Telstar 19 VANTAGE include: Brazil regional beam, North Atlantic regional beam and HTS spot beams over Brazil and the Andean region. Ka-band HTS spot beams of Telstar 19 VANTAGE cover: South America, the Caribbean, the North Atlantic and Northern Canada.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE is expected to enter commercial service this summer after it has successfully completed orbit raising and comprehensive in-orbit testing. The satellite has a 15 year design life.

By Eric Ralph (https://www.teslarati.com/author/eric-ralph/)
Posted on July 22, 2018

SpaceX has successfully completed its 13th launch of 2018, kicking off a marathon of three new Falcon 9 Block 5 booster debuts with the launch of the Telstar 19V communications satellite, potentially breaking the record for the largest commercial satellite ever launched at 7000 kg (15,500 lb).

Despite the heft of its payload and partially thanks to a slightly lower parking orbit for the satellite, Falcon 9 booster B1047 – the second Block 5 booster to roll off the assembly line – managed to successfully land aboard the autonomous spaceport drone ship (ASDS) Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY), stationed approximately 650 km (400 mi) off the Florida coast at launch time.

While the booster was unable to maintain a live video feed through its high-speed reentry and Atlantic landing, SpaceX's cameras on OCISLY managed to reconnect a few seconds after touchdown to show the 50-meter (160-foot) tall rocket safely resting on the drone ship. As the webcast host noted, Falcon 9 Block 5 features a number of prominent upgrades designed to enable levels of reusability and reliability essentially unprecedented in the world of orbital rocketry.

Ottawa, Canada, August 27, 2018 – Telesat announced today that its new Telstar 19 VANTAGE high throughput satellite (HTS) is fully operational at 63 degrees West and has entered commercial service. Telstar 19 VANTAGE was launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on July 22nd and will serve growing consumer, enterprise and mobility markets across the Americas and Atlantic. It is being operated by Telesat Brasil, a Brazilian satellite company wholly-owned by Telesat.

Telstar 19 VANTAGE was built by SSL, a Maxar Technologies company, and is the latest in a new generation of Telesat satellites with capacity optimized to serve the types of bandwidth intensive applications increasingly in demand by users worldwide. It operates from Telesat's prime orbital location of 63 degrees West, the same as Telesat's highly utilized Telstar 14R satellite, and brings a new level of performance and value for satellite broadband requirements on land, at sea and in the air. With its distinct zones of coverage across the Americas and Atlantic, Telstar 19 VANTAGE combines regional beams and high throughput spot beams in Ku-band with additional HTS spot beams in Ka-band.

As previously announced, Telesat customer Hughes Network Systems LLC (Hughes) has signed a 15-year agreement for Telstar 19 VANTAGE Ka-band capacity which Hughes refers to as Hughes 63 West. Hughes will utilize this capacity to expand its broadband satellite services for consumers and businesses in South America.

"Telstar 19 VANTAGE is a state-of-the-art spacecraft that combines regional beams and high throughput spot beams to deliver superior performance and value to the market," said Dan Goldberg, Telesat's President and CEO. "The pre-launch agreements Telesat has secured with Hughes and Bell Canada, combined with strong interest from other leading satellite service providers across the Americas and Atlantic, confirm that the innovative design of Telstar 19 VANTAGE is the right one to serve today's bandwidth intensive applications. I would like to congratulate the teams at Telesat and SSL whose dedication and expertise enabled Telstar 19 VANTAGE to become fully operational within weeks after launch."
