China is expected to launch a pair of Earth observation satellites for Pakistan in June, with the Long March 2C/SMA launch vehicle having recently passed factory inspections ahead of transport to the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre.

The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), a major carrier rocket maker under the main space contractor CASC, announced  (http://www.calt.com/n689/c11893/content.html)earlier this week that the Long March 2C/SMA configured rocket with solid-motor upper stage had passed reviews.

The rocket will carry two satellites, the high-resolution electro-optical Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1), developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a spacecraft designer and manufacturer subordinate to CASC, and the smaller, experimental PakTES-1A, built by the Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission (SUPARCO) - Pakistan's space agency - with assistance from the Space Advisory Company of South Africa.
Qaiser Anees Khurram, the head of SUPARCO, told Gulf News (https://gulfnews.com/news/asia/pakistan/pakistan-to-launch-2-satellites-in-early-2018-1.2101103) of the UAE in late 2017 that PRSS-1, "will make Pakistan self-reliant in multi-spectral imaging".

Khurram added that the remote sensing satellite will, "have multiple benefits and practical applications, including agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, forestry, water management, weather forecast and other areas."

No clear indication of when the launch will take place has been released. Late on Sunday China succeeded with its 15th launch of 2018 (https://gbtimes.com/china-launches-queqiao-relay-satellite-to-support-change-4-lunar-far-side-landing-mission), sending the Queqiao Chang'e-4  (https://gbtimes.com/channel/features/123)relay satellite and two microsatellites towards the Moon (https://gbtimes.com/queqiao-update-tracking-the-change-4-relay-satellite-on-its-way-to-the-moon). Long March 2C and upper stage developments

The two-stage, hypergolic Long March 2C has launched 45 times, suffering one failure (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2011/08/chinas-third-launch-week-long-march-2c-fails/) in 2011, and has lifted off from all three of China's inland launch sites: Jiuquan, Taiyuan and Xichang. Its previous mission was in January (https://gbtimes.com/chinas-fifth-launch-of-january-puts-three-yaogan-30-reconnaissance-satellites-and-nanosat-1a-in-orbit).

The Long March 2C will also loft the China-France Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT) (https://gbtimes.com/sino-french-oceanography-satellite-to-launch-in-2018-joint-space-science-mission-to-follow) into space in September this year, according to CALT.

A new upper stage for the Long March 2C, the Yuanzheng-1B (https://gbtimes.com/china-to-debut-new-yuanzheng-upper-stage-for-long-march-2c-rocket-in-2018), is expected to debut in the near future.

ISLAMABAD - In a giant leap, Pakistan will launch its first indigenous satellite next month, putting Pakistan among the nations with advanced space technology.

Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammed Faisal said that the satellite will be launched in space next month. He said the weight of satellite was 285 kilograms and it will be helpful for research in geography, climate and weather. The spokesperson said it will also be used for remote sensing.
Pakistan has also kick-started an ambitious space programme for the fiscal year 2018-19 to keep an eye on the Indian side and reduce its dependence on foreign satellites for civil and military purposes.

The satellite named PakTES-1A is an indigenously developed remote sensing satellite of Pakistan. It will be launched at 610-kilometre sun-synchronous orbit in July 2018. Until now, Pakistan has been relying on the US and French satellites for civil and military communications.

In 2016, Pakistan and China had signed an agreement for the launch of a special remote-sensing satellite in 2018. The agreement was aimed at monitoring the development of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.

Many infrastructure projects are under construction throughout Pakistan under the CPEC. Originally valued at $ 46 billion, the value of CPEC projects is now more than $ 62 billion. The CPEC will link Pakistani Gwadar port to China's Xinjiang province.

In 2012, Pakistan had completed its first remote-sensing satellite project. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, commonly known as SUPARCO, had set up its own version of Global Navigation Satellite System and immediately acquired the Beidou navigation system of China for this satellite in September 2012.

Presently, three satellites are under design by SUPARCO in collaboration with different universities throughout the country. The SUPARCO says that the first satellite of this programme had been scheduled to launch in July 2018, and it was expected to provide help in exploiting the potentials of space technologies for natural resource surveying and environmental purpose.

RSS technologies are used to detect and classify objects on earth, including on the surface and in the atmosphere and oceans, based on propagated signals.

In the budget presented in April for the fiscal year 2018-19, the government had allocated Rs4.7 billion ($40.7 million) to the SUPARCO. This was a 34 percent higher than the previous year's budget allocation.

The budget includes Rs2.55 billion ($ 22 million) for three new programmes including $ 11.7 million for multi-mission satellite (PakSat-MM1) dedicated to live satellite television, broadband data transmission and emergency telecommunications services, $ 8.7 million for three "Pakistan space centre" sites in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and $ 1.7 million for the establishment of a "space application research centre" in Karachi.

Last year, the SUPARCO announced that the country was all set to launch two satellites, including its first remote sensing satellite, in early 2018. "Our first optical remote sensing satellite is all set to be launched in 2018" SUPARCO Chairman Qaiser Anees Khurram had said. The other, he said, will be an experimental satellite.

Khurram had said: "Remote-sensing satellite will have multiple benefits and practical applications, including agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, forestry, water management, weather forecast and other areas."

The launching of the satellite will support Pakistan's efforts for self-reliance amid tensions with the US. Only last month, the two countries had imposed tit-for-tat travel restrictions on each other's diplomats suggesting a new low in their troubled ties.

In January, the US suspended security assistance to Pakistan targeting the Coalition Support Fund. Pakistan responded sharply saying it was not dependent on US aid for the war on terror.

The foreign ministry said Pakistan had fought the war against terrorism largely from its own resources "which has cost over $ 120 billion in 15 years."

There's as much drama in the Chinese sat launch schedule lately as in the @FIFAWorldCup (https://twitter.com/FIFAWorldCup) as another launch popped up from Jiuquan on July 3 ~03:50 UTC.....but internal sources on Chinese forums indicated that PRSS-1 for Pakistan scheduled to launch soon is NOT on this launch!

According to Chinese "insider sources" that unknown launch from Jiuquan today has slipped to this Friday (July 6).......and that after all those confusions the launch is indeed for Pakistan's PRSS-1!

Monday's launch is the 279th mission of the Long March rocket series.

The satellite, which has a designed life of seven years, is equipped with two panchromatic/multispectral cameras, with a resolution up to a meter and a coverage range of 60 km.

Designers say the two cameras are among the best exported remote sensing cameras made by China. They can be used to monitor plant diseases and pests.

The PRSS-1 will be used for land and resources surveying, monitoring of natural disasters, agriculture research, urban construction and providing remote sensing information for the Belt and Road region.

Monday's launch is the 279th mission of the Long March rocket series.

It is another space cooperation between China and Pakistan since the launch of PAKSAT-1R, a communication satellite, in August 2011.

It is also the first international commercial launch for a Long March-2C rocket within nearly two decades after it carried Motorola's Iridium satellites into orbit in 1999.

Long March-2C rockets are mainly used to send satellites into low Earth or Sun-synchronous orbits.

PRSS-1 (in Chinese, Pakistan Yaogan Weixing yi hao) is an imaging sat from China's DFH Sat Co; PakTES-1A is a smaller imaging sat built in Pakistan, will collaboration from S Africa. Both sats own by Pakistan's space agency SUPARCO. No TLEs yet.

Спутник PRSS-1 является первым оптическим спутником дистанционного зондирования, разработанным Китайской академией космических технологий для Пакистана, и 17-м спутником, разработанным ей для иностранных покупателей.

Спутник для научных экспериментов PakTES-1A, разработанный Пакистаном, был выведен на орбиту одновременно с помощью ракеты-носителя "Чанчжэн-2С".

Это еще один проект сотрудничества между Китаем и Пакистаном в космической области с момента запуска спутника связи 1R в августе 2011 года.

Designers say the two cameras are among the best exported remote sensing cameras made by China. They can be used to monitor plant diseases and pests.

Each camera has independent image processing, storage and transmission capability. The design of lossless compression could greatly improve the quality of the images, according to designers.

A specially designed orbit will ensure the satellite operates steadily and will optimize the image quality.

The satellite can turn at wide angles to enable the cameras to cover a wider range. The PRSS-1 has an information security design, and the data can be encrypted.

The data transmission system is a mature technology, which has been used in more than 20 Chinese satellites, said He Xinyang, vice president of the Xi'an branch of CAST.

When the satellite flies over Pakistan, it can send back real-time images, said Zhang Qian, a designer for the data transmission system.

When it exhausts its fuels and comes to the end of its life, it will be steered out of orbit and burned up in the atmosphere to avoid becoming space trash.

Monday's launch is the 279th mission of the Long March rocket series. Long March-2C rockets are mainly used to send satellites into low Earth or Sun-synchronous orbits.

It is another space cooperation between China and Pakistan since the launch of PAKSAT-1R, a communication satellite, in August 2011.

India already has a number of satellites up and running and delivering loads of data from up in the sky. With the recent developments, Pakistan finally has the capability to do so as well. Earlier, the country was reliant on other satellite imagery providers for crop monitoring, disaster monitoring and management, defence purposes, strategic planning and whatnot.

The two satellites were launched at 11:56 am in China with PRSS-1 being the 17th satellite developed by CAST for an overseas buyer. While Pakistan and China already have a communication satellite named PAKSAT-1R in the orbit which was launched back in August 2011, the PRSS-1 is the first with optical remote sensing capabilities, meaning that Pakistan will no longer have to rely on foreign satellites for data acquisition.

HELSINKI, Finland -- China launched twice July 9, with an early Long March 2C launch of two satellites for Pakistan into low Earth orbit being followed up with a Long March 3A mission to back up China's Beidou navigation satellite system.

The first launch saw the Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1) lofted from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in a desert region of Gansu province, northwest China, at 03:56 UTC July 9 (11:56 p.m. Eastern July 8 ).

The optical satellite was put into a 588 by 624 kilometer orbit inclined by 98 degrees by the Long March 2C/SMA configuration which uses an upper stage.

PRSS-1 was developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) and is based on a CAST-2000 satellite bus. Its imaging system provides panchromatic and multispectral imaging at 1-meter and 4-meter resolution, respectively, with a swarth width of around 60 kilometers.

It will be used for land and resources surveying, monitoring of natural disasters, agriculture research, urban construction and providing remote-sensing information for the establishment of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and in the Belt and Road initiative, according to Chinese state media.

PRSS-1 was accompanied by the smaller PakTES-1A satellite, a scientific experiment satellite designed and developed by Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

CAST is a subsidiary of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the main contractor for the Chinese space program, which also provided the launch service. CAST also stated it provided training to Pakistan personnel as part of the satellite package, with SUPARCO to operate PRSS-1 after on-orbit delivery.

China has in recent years adopted a strategy of offering turnkey projects which include satellite manufacture and launch as well as possible financing mechanisms. The country has launched communications and other satellites for countries including Belarus, Laos, Venezuela, Bolivia and Nigeria.

The July 9 launches were China's 19th and 20th of 2018, with CASC aiming to carry out around 36 launches this year. The country's record number of launches in a single year is 22, set in 2016, which included one failure and another partial failure. Commercial launch companies could boost the number to around 40.

The major upcoming government missions for the second half of the year include the return-to-flight of the heavy-lift Long March 5, which failed during its second flight last July and prompted a redesign of first stage engines, and the Chang'e-4 lunar far side soft-landing mission. Both are set for late 2018.

A Chinese Long March 2C rocket launched Monday with two satellites for Pakistan's national space agency, extending a partnership between the two countries' space programs.

The Long March 2C booster lifted off at 0356 GMT Monday (11:56 p.m. EDT Sunday) from the Jiuquan space center in northwest China's Inner Mongolia region, according to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology.

CALT, China's primary launch vehicle developer, said the rocket successfully placed the two Pakistani satellites into polar orbit using a solid-fueled rocket motor mounted atop the two-stage hydrazine-burning Long March 2C booster.

Satellite tracking data published by the U.S. military indicated the mission's two payloads were deployed into an orbit ranging between 364 miles (586 kilometers) and 388 miles (625 kilometers) above Earth, following a track tilted 98.1 degrees to the equator.
Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite 1 was the mission's primary payload.

The PRSS 1 spacecraft was built in China by DFH Satellite Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the China Academy of Space Technology, for Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO. Designed for to collect one-meter (3-foot) resolution imagery from orbit, PRSS 1 will support the monitoring of natural resources, environmental protection, disaster management and emergency response, crop yield estimation, and urban planning, according to China Great Wall Industry Corp., the Chinese state-owned company responsible for arranging commercial and international satellite and launch contracts.

Officials said the new satellite will also provide remote sensing information for the establishment of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, an extensive multibillion-dollar infrastructure development project between the two nations.

Chinese officials said PRSS 1 extended its solar panels after reaching orbit Monday, beginning a series of checkouts before the Pakistani-owned craft is declared operational. PRSS 1 is designed for a seven-year lifetime, and carries two cameras.

An experimental Earth observation satellite named PakTES 1A, designed and built in Pakistan with contributions from South Africa, accompanied the PRSS 1 spacecraft on Monday's launch.

China previously manufactured and launched the PakSat 1R communications satellite for Pakistan in 2011. The countries signed the agreement for the PRSS 1 mission in April 2016, modeled on an arrangement in which China built a pair of similar Earth-observing spacecraft for Venezuela.

Monday's mission was China's 19th space launch of the year, all successful. It was also the first launch by a Long March 2C rocket on a commercial flight since 1999, when China launched the last of six missions with a pair of U.S.-owned Iridium communications satellites.

На самом деле поднимался PRSS-1. Американцы с тех пор поменяли им обозначения.
