SATELLITE PAIR ARRIVE FOR GALILEO'S NEXT RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE

9 May 2018
The next two satellites in Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system have arrived at Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, ahead of their planned launch from the jungle space base in July.

Galileo satellites 23 and 24 left Luxembourg Airport on a Boeing 747 cargo jet on the morning of 4 May, arriving at Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport in French Guiana that evening.

They were then unloaded, still in their protective air-conditioned containers, and transported by truck to the cleanroom environment of the preparation building within Europe's Spaceport.

This pair will be launched along with another two Galileo satellites, which are due to be transported to French Guiana later this month.

The quartet will be launched together on a customised Ariane 5 on 25 July.

The Galileo System began Initial Services on 15 December 2016, and a growing number of commercial devices are using Galileo today (https://www.usegalileo.eu//EN/). Completion of the constellation should improve Galileo's positioning accuracy further still.

But Galileo satellites will continue to be launched into the future: a further 12 Galileo 'Batch 3' satellites were ordered last June, supplementing the 26 built so far to provide further in-orbit spares, and replacements for the oldest Galileo satellites, first launched in 2011.

A steady stream of orbital spares, ready to replace satellites reaching the end of their operational lives, is essential to ensure Galileo continues operating seamlessly.

Looking further ahead, with the aim of keeping Galileo services as a permanent part of the European and global landscape, replacement satellites will be required by the middle of the next decade, offering improved performance and added features.

Galileo satellites

Galileo is Europe's own global satellite navigation system, consisting of both the satellites in space and their associated ground infrastructure.

The definition, development and in-orbit validation phases were carried out by ESA, and co-funded by ESA and the European Commission. This phase created a mini-constellation of four satellites and a reduced ground segment o validate the overall concept, ahead of further deployment.

Success led to the current Full Operational Capability phase, fully funded by the EU and managed by the Commission. The Commission and ESA have a delegation agreement by which ESA acts as system design authority and procurement agent on behalf of the Commission.

Ariane 5 for Arianespace's next Galileo mission is at the Spaceport

The cryogenic main stage for Arianespace's Flight VA244 is transported across the Spaceport after arriving in French Guiana.

Launch vehicle elements for Arianespace's third Ariane 5 flight at the service of Europe's Galileo global satellite navigation system, which is planned for July, have been delivered to the Spaceport.

These components, including the core cryogenic stage, arrived in French Guiana aboard one of two sea-going roll-on/roll-off ships that transport launcher hardware fr om Europe to the South American launch site for Arianespace's family of launch vehicles.

The mission – designated Flight VA244 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – will orbit four more Galileo FOC (Full Operational Capability) spacecraft, to be deployed into medium Earth orbit from a dispenser system on the Ariane 5 ES launcher version. Galileo is designed to provide a new European global satellite navigation system with precision positioning services under civilian control.

A launch for European institutional customers
As Europe's own global navigation satellite system, Galileo is operated under civilian control, offering guaranteed high-precision positioning around the world. Its initial services began in December 2016, allowing users equipped with Galileo-enabled devices to combine Galileo and GPS data for better positioning accuracy.

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) is responsible for operating the Galileo satellite navigation systems on behalf of the European Union. This authority was transferred to GSA from the European Space Agency (ESA) in July 2017.

Galileo spacecraft are built by OHB System in Bremen, Germany, and the navigation payloads provided by Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology in the United Kingdom. Flight VA244's four passengers are located at the Spaceport, wh ere they are undergoing their own pre-flight preparations. The satellites were delivered to French Guiana via cargo aircraft, then transported by road to the Spaceport.

Arianespace already has launched 22 Galileo spacecraft, with eight being orbited on two previous Ariane 5 missions (Flights VA233 and VA240 in November 2016 and December 2017, respectively), and the others lofted by seven medium-lift Soyuz vehicles carrying two satellites each. Ariane 5 is delivered to Arianespace by ArianeGroup as production prime contractor.

During pre-flight activity in French Guiana at the Spaceport's S1A processing facility, these FOC (Full Operational Capability) spacecraft have undergone their fit-checks with the dispenser system to be installed on Ariane 5.

This dispenser system will secure the Galileo FOC satellites in place during their ascent to a targeted release altitude of 23,222 km., then deploy them in rapid sequence using a pyrotechnic separation system.

Designated as Flight VA244 in Arianespace's numbering system, the July mission's Ariane 5 is now at the Spaceport, positioning it for build-up in the Launcher Integration Building. After completion of verifications and systems checkout by production prime contractor ArianeGroup, this Ariane 5 ES version will be moved to the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for payload integration.

Following the established assembly flow, the process began with this week's positioning of the launch vehicle's central core cryogenic stage over one of two mobile launch tables utilized for Ariane 5. It was followed by integration of the two large solid propellant boosters – which were installed directly on the launch table and mated to the core stage, clearing the way for placement of the upper stage, topped off with the vehicle equipment bay.

Once the Ariane 5's basic build-up is completed under the direction of production prime contractor ArianeGroup, it will be moved to the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for installation of its four Galileo FOC (Full Operational Capability) satellite passengers – which currently are undergoing their own pre-flight preparations at the Spaceport. Liftoff is scheduled for July to a deployment in circular medium Earth orbit (MEO).

Galileo: Europe's global navigation system
The heavy-lift vehicle for Arianespace's upcoming Galileo launch – designated Flight VA244 in the company's launcher family number system – is an Ariane 5 ES version, equipped with the EPS storable propellent upper stage. This propulsion system replaces the ESC-A cryogenic upper stage utilized on Ariane 5 ECA variants, which typically carry telecommunications payloads to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

Ariane 5 is ready to receive its Galileo satellites for launch by Arianespace in July

After being hoisted for installation in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, Ariane 5's vehicle equipment bay is lowered into position on the core cryogenic stage (photo at left), which was followed by integration of the EPS storable propellant stage (at right).

The next Ariane 5 launcher to orbit Galileo navigation satellites has completed its initial build-up in French Guiana, continuing preparations for Arianespace's July mission – which is designated Flight VA244 in the company's numbering system.

This heavy-lift vehicle underwent its assembly process inside the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, beginning with the mating of its two solid propellant strap-on boosters and the core cryogenic stage. The next steps were the launcher's vehicle equipment bay integration atop the core stage, followed by installation of the storable propellant stage – which is the configuration used on this Ariane 5 ES version of Arianespace's workhorse launcher.

After completion of verifications and systems checkout by ArianeGroup, production prime contractor the launcher, Ariane 5 will be moved to the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for integration of its four-satellite payload of Galileo FOC (Full Operational Capability) satellites.

Galileo spacecraft are built by OHB System in Bremen, Germany, and the navigation payloads provided by Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology in the United Kingdom.

NEXT FOUR GALILEO SATELLITES FUELLED FOR LAUNCH

3 July 2018
Europe's next four Galileo satellites have been fuelled for launch at Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in preparation for their launch on 25 July.

The four satellites were placed into their protective containers to be transported fr om the S1A processing building to the S3B payload preparation building, wh ere they were filled with the hydrazine fuel that will keep the satellites manoeuverable during their 12-year working lives.

The next step is to fit the quartet onto the dispenser that holds them in place securely during launch then releases them out into space with a pyrotechnic separation system once the Ariane upper stage reaches its 22 922 km-altitude target orbit.

The definition, development and in-orbit validation phases were carried out by ESA, and co-funded by ESA and the European Commission. This phase created a mini-constellation of four satellites and a reduced ground segment to validate the overall concept, ahead of further deployment.

Success led to the current Full Operational Capability phase, fully funded by the EU and managed by the European Commission. The European Commission and ESA have a delegation agreement by which ESA acts as system design authority and procurement agent on behalf of the European Commission.

Europe's first mission to Mercury, a quartet of Galileo navigation spacecraft, a global winds observatory, and a new European weather satellite have arrived at an equatorial launch base in French Guiana in preparation for launches in the coming months.

The set of European missions are set to ride into space aboard four rockets, amid several more commercial flights carrying communications satellites to orbit, in what is shaping up to be a busy second half of the year for Arianespace, the French company which oversees Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega launch operations at the European-run spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The rapid-fire launch campaigns are already underway at the space center on the northeastern coast of South America, where technicians are preparing rocket and satellite hardware for liftoff.

Galileo navigation network ready to receive reinforcements

Arianespace will kick off its second-half launch schedule July 25 with an Ariane 5 rocket flight carrying four Galileo navigation satellites into an orbit more than 14,000 miles (around 23,000 kilometers) above Earth.

Liftoff is set for for an instantaneous opportunity at 1125:01 GMT (7:25:01 a.m. EDT; 8:25:01 a.m. French Guiana time) on July 25.

The four new Galileo spacecraft, built by OHB in Germany with navigation payloads provided by SSTL in the United Kingdom, will add to Europe's home-grown navigation network, an analog to the U.S. Air Force-run Global Positioning System. With the July 25 launch, Europe will have launched 26 satellites into the operational Galileo fleet, which needs 24 active spacecraft, plus six spares, to provide independent global positioning and timing services.

But two of the Galileo satellites were launched into the wrong orbit in 2014, and another is afflicted with an antenna program, limiting its utility.

Managed by the European Commission — the European Union's executive arm — and supported by the European Space Agency, the Galileo program has 12 more satellites in development for additional launches beginning in late 2020.

The four Galileo satellites set for launch later this month arrived at the Guiana Space Center on two trans-Atlantic airplane shipments in May and June, and the core components of the Ariane 5 launcher for the July 25 flight arrived in French Guiana from Europe aboard Ariane Group's rocket transport vessel on May 30.

Workers at the French Guiana launch base have fueled the four Galileo satellites with maneuvering propellants for their 12-year navigation missions, and ground crews have assembled the Ariane 5 rocket with its cryogenic core stage, twin solid rocket boosters, vehicle equipment bay, and storable propellant upper stage.

Mounted on its vertical launch table, the Ariane 5 will be transferred to from the spaceport's launcher integration building to the nearby final assembly building for attachment of the mission's four satellite passengers and payload shroud.

The upcoming Ariane 5 mission, numbered VA244 in Arianespace's flight sequence, will be the 33rd and last to fly with an Aestus engine, a powerplant fueled by toxic hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, which can be stored for long durations. Unlike the hydrogen-fueled HM7B engine used on most Ariane 5 flights, the Aestus engine can be reignited multiple times in space, allowing it to place payloads such as the Galileo navigation satellites directly into high-altitude orbits.

Ariane Group is developing a restartable cryogenic engine named Vinci to replace the HM7B on Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket set for a maiden flight in mid-2020.

Dual-transfer: Ariane 5s for Arianespace's next heavy-lift missions are on the move in French Guiana

The Ariane 5 ES version for Flight VA244 (foreground) is shown on its way for payload installation at the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building. In the background, the Ariane 5 ECA version for Arianespace's following heavy-lift mission (VA243) is temporarily positioned in the ELA-3 launch zone before being transferred to the Launcher Integration Building.

Arianespace's flexibility and reactivity in responding to mission changes due to payload availability was underscored with this week's simultaneous transfer of the 99th and 100th Ariane 5 launchers – which will be utilized on consecutive multi-passenger heavy-lift flights performed fr om French Guiana in 2018.

During activity at the Spaceport, the no. 99 Ariane 5 – an ES version that will orbit four Galileo FOC (Full Operational Capability) satellites on July 25 – was transferred from the Launcher Integration Building, wh ere its basic build-up was performed, to the Final Assembly Building for payload installation. This upcoming mission is designated Flight VA244 in Arianespace's numbering system.

The Spaceport's Final Assembly Building was available due to the parallel rollout of the milestone 100th Ariane 5, which is scheduled for launch in early September carrying the Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 satellite for Azercosmos and Intelsat, along with another payload to be announced. After moving out of the Final Assembly Building, this ECA version of Ariane 5 had a temporary stopover in the ELA-3 launch zone before heading to the Launcher Integration Building for its own pre-flight preparations.

Designated Flight VA243, the Ariane 5 ECA had been set for a late May liftoff, but its timing was shifted because additional technical checks were required for the mission's originally-scheduled co-passenger.

Ready for payload integration

The transfer of Flight VA244's Ariane 5 to the Final Assembly Building is a major step, signaling its readiness for integration of the mission's four Galileo satellites – which will be released to a circular medium Earth orbit (MEO).

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/222997.jpg) (http://www.arianespace.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/7-6-2018-VA244-lg.jpg)
In the Spaceport's S3 facility, one of the four Galileo FOC satellites for Flight VA244 is installed on the mission's multi-payload dispenser system.

The processing of these satellites occurred at the Spaceport's S1 building, was followed by their fueling in the S3B facility – enabling their subsequent installation atop a multi-passenger dispenser system.

Galileo spacecraft are built by OHB System in Bremen, Germany, and the navigation payloads are provided by Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology in the United Kingdom.

Flight VA244: Arianespace's Ariane 5 launch for the Galileo constellation and Europe

For its fourth launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit four more satellites (satellites 23 to 26) for the Galileo constellation. This mission is being performed on behalf of the European Commission under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).

For the third time, an Ariane 5 ES version will be used to orbit satellites in Europe's own satellite navigation system; with all Galileo spacecraft having been launched to date by Arianespace. Ariane 6 will take over from 2020.

Arianespace is proud to mobilize its entire family of launch vehicles for the benefit of Europe's ambitions and its independent access to space.

The Flight VA244 will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, July 20, 2018 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Galileo is Europe's own global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. Currently providing Initial Services, Galileo is interoperable with GPS and Glonass, the U.S. and Russian global satellite navigation systems. By offering dual frequencies as standard, Galileo is set to deliver real-time positioning accuracy down to the meter range.

The constellation will count 24 operational satellites plus in-orbit spares, of which 22 already have been put into orbit by Arianespace.

In July 2017, ESA officially transferred the supervision of Galileo in-orbit operations to the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA), on behalf of the European Union. After the VA244 launch, the GSA will be responsible for operating the satellites as soon as they are separated from the launcher. These operations of setting up and operating the system will be done in collaboration with ESA.

The Galileo satellites are built by prime contractor OHB System in Bremen, Germany, with the payloads supplied by UK-based Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), which is an Airbus Defense and Space affiliate.

Arianespace's third Ariane 5 mission with Galileo satellites is "go" for launch

Next week's Arianespace flight with four European Galileo navigation spacecraft has been approved for a morning liftoff on July 25 following the launch readiness review held today at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Designated Flight VA244 in Arianespace's numbering system, the launch will deploy its quartet of Galileo spacecraft during a nearly four-hour flight, with liftoff set at exactly 8:25:01 a.m. local time in French Guiana on Wednesday.

Today's launch readiness review validated the "go" status of the Ariane 5 ES launcher version, its Galileo passengers, as well as the Spaceport's launch site infrastructure and the network of tracking stations.

The Galileo satellites have a liftoff mass of approximately 740 kg. each, and will be injected into a medium Earth orbit (MEO) at an altitude of 22,922 kilometers. To achieve this, the Ariane 5's storable propellant upper stage will perform two separate burns.

WATCH THE LAUNCH OF GALILEOS 23–26

19 July 2018
Watch live as Europe's next four Galileo satellites are launched on an Ariane 5 launcher on Wednesday 25 July at 11:25 GMT (13:25 CEST, 08:25 local time) from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Livestream.com/ESA/GalileoLaunch (https://livestream.com/ESA/GalileoLaunch)

Galileo is Europe's own global satellite navigation system, consisting of both the satellites in space and their associated ground infrastructure. These latest four Galileo satellites will bring the constellation in orbit up to 26 satellites.

Livestream coverage of the launch starts at 11:00 GMT (13:00 CEST) with liftoff at 11:25 GMT (13:25 CEST).

Live coverage resumes with confirmation of the satellites separating from their upper stage from 14:50 GMT (16:50 CEST).

Separation of the Ariane 5's upper stage occurs about nine minutes after liftoff, followed by the first 10-minute firing of the upper stage.

The upper stage – carrying four 715-kg Galileo satellites – flies in ballistic configuration for three hours and eight minutes, after which a second upper stage firing lasting just over six minutes will place it into circular separation orbit.

Once stabilised at 3h 36 min after liftoff, the Galileo dispenser will release the first two satellites, followed by the second pair 20 minutes later.

Ariane 5 reaches the launch zone for this week's Arianespace mission with four Galileo satellites

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace Flight VA244 moves into the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch complex in preparation for liftoff on Wednesday, July 25, with four Galileo satellites.

Arianespace's next Ariane 5 for liftoff this year has rolled out to the launch zone in French Guiana, clearing the way for the heavy-lift vehicle's third mission carrying satellites for Europe's Galileo navigation system.

The completed Ariane 5 ES version was transferred today atop its mobile launch table fr om the Final Assembly Building – wh ere payload integration occurred – to the Spaceport's dedicated ELA-3 launch complex.

Designated Flight VA244 in the company's numbering system, this upcoming Ariane 5 mission – set for Wednesday, July 25 – will lift off at exactly 8:25:01 a.m. local time in French Guiana and deploy its quartet of Galileo spacecraft into medium Earth orbit (MEO) on a nearly four-hour flight.

During the flight sequence, Ariane 5's storable propellant upper stage will perform two burns, which are to be separated by a 3-hour, 8-minute ballistic phase. The four Galileo satellites have a liftoff mass of 717.7 kg. each, with Ariane 5's overall payload lift performance set at 3,287 kg.

Another launch for European institutional customers
Flight VA244 is Arianespace's third Ariane 5 mission carrying European Galileo satellites, following previous launches in December 2017 and November 2016. Prior to that, the company orbited 14 of them on seven Soyuz missions performed between October 2011 and May 2016.

Galileo spacecraft are built by OHB System in Bremen, Germany, and the navigation payloads provided by Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology in the United Kingdom.

ЦитироватьGalileo: from GIOVE to constellation

European Space Agency, ESA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIBaDdAbGlFDeS33shmlD0A)

Опубликовано: 23 июл. 2018 г.

On 25 July, with the launch of four more satellites from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, Europe's Galileo constellation will come a giant leap nearer completion.
Since the launch of the 'Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element' test satellites GIOVE-A in 2005 and GIOVE-B in 2008 – with the task of securing radio bands and testing key technologies – ESA and Galileo have come a long way.
The deployment of the constellation and Galileo's ground segment have been a massive undertaking. Talking to Paul Verhoef, Director of Navigation, we look back and consider the remarkable progress that has been made by Europe in satellite navigation and look towards the future and what it might hold.

European Space Agency, ESA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIBaDdAbGlFDeS33shmlD0A)

Опубликовано: 24 июл. 2018 г.

On 25 July 4 Europe's next four Galileo satellites will be launched into orbit by Ariane 5 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
With this launch the Galileo constellation will reach 26 satellites in space, completing the constellation in overall numbers although further launches are needed to place back-up satellites in orbit.
The launch comes at a time when Galileo is into its second year of Initial Operations, with a signal that is better than expected and that is now usable in all new mobile phones.
This video looks at Galileo's story so far and the way forward, interviewing Paul Verhoef, ESA Director of Navigation, and Valter Alpe, Galileo's Satellite Production and Launch Campaign Manager.

Ground crews in French Guiana on Monday transferred an Ariane 5 rocket to its launch pad, moving the vehicle into position for liftoff Wednesday with four European Galileo navigation satellites on the Ariane 5's last flight with an older-generation, out-of-production upper stage.

The 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey from the Ariane 5's final assembly building to the ELA-3 launch pad at the Guiana Space Center took about one hour, with the 155-foot-tall (47-meter) rocket riding a mobile platform pulled by a diesel-powered tug along dual rail tracks.

Once at the launch pad, the Titan tug positioned the rocket and its mobile platform over a flame bucket, and technicians connected the Ariane 5 to power, telemetry, propellant, pressurant and conditioned air supplies. Pre-launch steps planned for Tuesday included filling of the rocket's helium pressurization system in preparation for the final countdown, timed for launch from the European-run spaceport in South America at 1125:01 GMT (7:25 a.m. EDT; 8:25 a.m. French Guiana time).

The Ariane 5 rocket has an instantaneous launch opportunity Wednesday, or else wait for another day.

A quartet of Galileo satellites is mounted atop the Ariane 5 launcher, ready to advance the deployment of Europe's home-grown navigation network.

"Here on site, everything is ready," said Paul Verhoef, director of navigation at the European Space Agency. "The launcher is ready. The site is ready."

ESA is a technical and procurement agent on the multibillion-euro Galileo program, which is managed by the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union.

Wednesday's launch is a turning point for the Galileo program, which is projected to cost EU member states 10 billion euros ($11.7 billion) from inception through 2020. With a successful mission Wednesday, ESA and the European Commission will have launched 26 Galileo satellites since 2011, keeping the network on track for full operability in 2020, Verhoef said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday.

Once complete, the Galileo constellation will be made up of around 30 satellites, including 24 operational spacecraft and approximately six spares spread among three orbital planes 14,429 miles (23,222 kilometers) above Earth.

The satellites due for liftoff Wednesday are the last of a a second batch of navigation platforms ordered from OHB of Germany, which builds the spacecraft, and British-based SSTL, provider of the navigation payloads.

There will be a hiatus in Galileo launches until late 2020, when the first pair of an additional 12 Galileo satellites ordered from the OHB/SSTL team by ESA and the European Commission will be ready for liftoff. The next series of Galileo satellites are expected to launch on Europe's Ariane 6 rocket, riding two at a time aboard the lighter configuration of the next-generation launcher with two solid solid rocket boosters.

"We are happy with what we have at the moment, and with the delivery of the next batch in 2020," Verhoef said.

Officials said the addition of the four satellites set for launch Wednesday — along with the eventual incorporation of two Galileo spacecraft launched into an incorrect orbit in 2014 and the activation of Galileo's ground systems — should allow the European Commission to declare the network ready for full operations in 2020.

The European Commission kicked off Galileo's initial services in December 2016, allowing users equipped with Galileo-enabled chipsets to incorporate Galileo navigation signals alongside those provided by the U.S. military's GPS satellites and the Russian military's Glonass fleet.

But without a full complement of at least 24 satellites, there are still gaps in Galileo coverage. Besides the two Galileo satellites flying in the wrong orbit, another spacecraft suffered an antenna failure and is unable to provide services.

Nevertheless, officials said those gaps will be closed in the next few years, and the satellites that are working in orbit are providing better-than-required positioning estimates.

"Not only is the Galileo performance promised to be very good, it is very good," said Rodrigo de Costa, Galileo services program manager at the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency, or GSA.

The full operational capability milestone means "the constellation is complete, fully operational, with all the ground segment," Verhoef said.

"This is often forgotten," Verhoef told reporters Tuesday. "The focus is always that we launch satellites, but I can tell you a lot of the deployment, in reality, is happening onf the ground. All of that needs to be ready, included and working together as a system before you can declare any kind of operational capability."

The four satellites launching Wednesday are nicknamed Anna, Ellen, Samuel and Tara, the names of children who won a European Commission painting competition.

The first stage of the Ariane 5 rocket set to loft the Galileo satellites will be fueled with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen early Wednesday. The liquid-fueled upper stage's load of toxic hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide was pumped into the rocket last week, and the Ariane 5's twin strap-on rocket boosters will burn pre-packed solid propellant.

After a series of weather, telemetry and other readiness checks by the Arianespace launch team, the countdown will commence an automated synchronized sequence at Minus-7 minutes. The computer-controlled final countdown will oversee pressurization of the rocket's propellant tanks, final arming and other steps leading to ignition of the first stage's Vulcain 2 main engine when the countdown clock reaches zero.

Seven seconds later, the launcher's two solid rocket boosters will ignite to propel the Ariane 5 into the sky. The boosters' nozzle steering systems will guide the Ariane 5 to the northeast, aligning with a trajectory that will carry the Galileo satellites between 56 degrees north and south latitude, the inclination range of the European navigation fleet.

Riding 2.9 million pounds of thrust, the Ariane 5 will exceed the speed of sound in less than a minute. Its twin solid rocket boosters will burn out and fall into the Atlantic Ocean at Plus+2 minutes, 19 seconds.

The Vulcain 2 main engine will continue firing until Plus+8 minutes, 56 seconds, then the Ariane 5's core stage will drop away five seconds later.

The upper stage's Aestus engine will ignite at Plus+9 minutes, 19 seconds, for the first of two burns required to inject the Galileo satellites into their high-altitude orbit.

Wednesday's mission will be the final flight of the Aestus engine, which flies with the Ariane 5's storable propellant upper stage, known by the French acronym EPS. The Aestus engine can be reignited in space and burns a toxic, but stable propellant mixture that can be stored for long durations, allowing the upper stage to operate for several hours after liftoff.

The rocket configuration launching Wednesday is known as the Ariane ES. The same version of the Ariane 5 has launched seven previous times, including five missions with Europe's Automated Transfer Vehicle resupply ship for the International Space Station, and two flights carrying four Galileo satellites each in 2016 and 2017.

Wednesday's launch will mark the 33rd flight of an Aestus engine on the Ariane 5 ES and previous Ariane 5 versions. The more commonly-used HM7B engine flown on the Ariane 5's commercial satellite launches burns hydrogen and oxygen, and can only be started once in space.

All future launches of the Ariane 5 rocket, which will make its 99th liftoff Wednesday, will use the HM7B upper stage engine.

Ariane Group, which produces the Ariane rocket family and is majority owner of Arianespace, is developing a restartable cryogenic engine named Vinci to replace the HM7B on Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket set for a maiden flight in mid-2020.

After its first cutoff at Plus+19 minutes, 58 seconds, the upper stage will coast more than three hours, climbing to an altitude of more than 14,000 miles before reigniting at 1452 GMT (10:52 a.m. EDT; 11:52 a.m. French Guiana time).

The second Aestus engine firing will last around six minutes, aiming for a circular orbit 14,243 miles (22,922 kilometers) above Earth.

The first pair of Galileo satellites will separate from the Ariane 5's specially-designed dispenser at 1501 GMT (11:01 a.m. EDT; 12:01 p.m. EDT), followed by deployment of the second pair 20 minutes later.

Once in orbit, each of the 1,627-pound (738-kilogram) satellites will unfurl their power-generating solar panels. Ground controllers will command the spacecraft to raise their orbits by a few hundred miles to join Plane B of the Galileo constellation.

The satellites should be operational by January or February 2019 after a post-launch functional checkout, according to de Costa.

An Ariane 5 rocket emerged from its vertical assembly building Monday and rolled along dual rail tracks for a 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey to its launch pad at the Guiana Space Center on the northern coastline of South America, moving into position for blastoff Wednesday with four Galileo navigation satellites.
Спойлер
The midday rollout Monday was powered by a Titan tug, which hitched to the Ariane 5's mobile launch platform to pull it to the ELA-3 launch pad.

The 155-foot-tall (47-meter) Ariane 5 ES rocket is scheduled for takeoff at 1125:01 GMT (7:25:01 a.m. EDT; 8:25:01 a.m. French Guiana time) to carry the four Galileo satellites into a high-altitude orbit more than 14,000 miles (nearly 23,000 kilometers) above Earth.

It will be the 99th launch of an Ariane 5 rocket, and the third Ariane 5 flight of the year.

The countdown has commenced in French Guiana for liftoff of an Ariane 5 rocket and four Galileo navigation satellites at 1125 GMT (7:25 a.m. EDT).
Спойлер
The powerful commercial launcher will send the four Galileo satellites into a circular orbit around 14,243 miles (22,922 kilometers) above Earth on a nearly four-hour mission from liftoff through the deployment of the final two payloads.

Launch is timed for 8:25 a.m. local time in French Guiana.

Arianespace's launch team based in a hardened building less than 3 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) from the launch pad are overseeing the overnight final countdown in French Guiana, which began at 2347 GMT (7:47 p.m. EDT).

A check of the Ariane 5's electrical systems was accomplished at 0032 GMT (8:32 p.m. EDT).

Over the next few hours, workers will put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for the launch will also be loaded into the rocket's computer

The launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 0647 GMT (2:47 a.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It will take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

The storable liquid propellants on the Ariane 5's second stage and the pre-packed powder fuel inside the Ariane 5's twin boosters are already loaded.

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will occur at 0807 GMT (4:07 a.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 1015 GMT (6:15 a.m. EDT).

The computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.5 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching northeast from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison 2 minutes, 19 seconds after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 56 seconds after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrazine-fueled Aestus engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire for nearly 11 minutes during the first of two burns on Tuesday's flight, putting the Galileo satellites into an initial egg-shaped transfer orbit.

The Aestus engine is scheduled to cutoff 19 minutes, 58 seconds, after liftoff, beginning a coast of more than three hours.

The upper stage will restart at 3 hours, 27 minutes, 50 seconds, for a second burn lasting more than six minutes. The rocket is aiming for a near-circular orbit more than 14,200 miles above Earth at an inclination of 56 degrees, according to an Arianespace press kit.

The first pair of Galileo satellites will deploy at T+plus 3 hours, 36 minutes, followed by the second pair at T+plus 3 hours, 56 minutes.

Arianespace continues the momentum for Europe's Galileo constellation with another Ariane 5 success

The morning liftoff of Flight VA244 with its four Galileo satellites provided a clear view of the launcher from ignition through the initial ascent phases.

With today's Ariane 5 morning success from the Spaceport in French Guiana, Arianespace has now orbited a total of 26 satellites for Europe's Galileo global navigation system with its launch vehicle family – further underscoring its ability to meet the launch requirements of high-profile institutional customers.

This mission, designated Flight VA244 in Arianespace's numbering system, was performed from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone, with Ariane 5 deploying its four passengers during a mission lasting approximately 3 hours, 56 minutes.

Liftoff occurred at the precise moment of launch – 8:25:01 a.m., local time in French Guiana – with the vehicle ascending through skies with only scattered clouds, providing a clear view of its initial trajectory, including separation of the two solid propellant boosters.

The four Galileo satellites weighed approximately 716 kg. each, and were deployed from a dispenser system that released the passengers in two sets during an interval of 20 minutes. The Ariane 5's overall payload lift performance to medium Earth orbit (MEO) was set at 3,284 kg.

From Soyuz to Ariane 5 to Ariane 6
Flight VA244 was the third to utilize the workhorse Ariane 5 ES version – supplied by production prime contractor ArianeGroup – in lofting operational Galileo spacecraft. It followed previous missions that orbited four satellites each in 2016 and 2017; plus 14 others launched in pairs aboard the company's Russian-built Soyuz vehicles during seven missions performed between 2011 and 2016.

"What an outstanding success for Europe with 12 Galileo satellites launched in less than three years by Ariane 5!" said Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël, who provided his post-flight comments from the Spaceport's mission control center.

Following today's third and final Arianespace's Galileo mission using an Ariane 5, future launches for the global navigation system will utilize the next-generation Ariane 6 – which is scheduled to begin providing services to Europe and worldwide customers in 2020. Two Galileo missions already have been assigned to the Ariane 6's A62 version.

This also marked the last utilization of an Ariane 5 ES version, equipped with a storable propellant upper stage. The Ariane 5 ES also was utilized on Arianespace missions that launched five European-built Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo resupply spacecraft to the International Space Station.

Another Arianespace success for Europe
As Europe's own global navigation satellite system, Galileo is operated under civilian control, offering guaranteed high-precision positioning around the world. The Galileo program is funded and owned by the European Union. The European Commission has overall responsibility for the program, with Flight VA244 performed by Arianespace on behalf of the European Commission under contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) is responsible for operating the Galileo satellite navigation systems on behalf of the European Union. Galileo spacecraft are built by OHB System in Bremen, Germany, and the navigation payloads provided by Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology in the United Kingdom.

Arianespace orbits four more Galileo satellites, as Ariane 5 logs its 99th mission

Arianespace has successfully launched four more satellites in the Galileo constellation. Liftoff was at 8:25 a.m. (local time) July 25, 2018 from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Today's launch was the 99th mission by the Ariane 5 heavy launcher. It was carried out on behalf of the European Commission as part of a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). It also was the last in a series of three launches for Galileo using the version of Ariane 5 with a storable propellant upper stage (ES). Two additional missions to deploy four more satellites have been assigned to the A62 version of the upcoming Ariane 6 launch vehicle.

Today's emblematic launch also was a landmark for the European space sector. Taking place at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, it brought together, in addition to the ESA Director General and the heads of national space agencies, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW); Frédérique Vidal, the French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation; Sébastien Lecornu, the French Minister of State, attached to the Ministre d'Etat, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition; and Pedro Duque, the Spanish Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities.

Since December 2016, Galileo has offered guaranteed and high-precision positioning services under civilian control. These services already are used by more than 100 million commercial devices.

Today's flight, VA244, the third and last performed with the Ariane 5 ES launcher dedicated to Galileo missions, orbited the constellation's satellites 23 to 26, built by OHB System. Arianespace has now deployed a total of 26 satellites for the constellation.

Two additional missions, to orbit four more satellites, already have been assigned to the A62 version of the new Ariane 6 launcher.

Supporting Europe's ambitious space goals
Arianespace guarantees independent access to space for Europe through its complete family of launch vehicles. Working for flagship programs by the European Commission and ESA, Arianespace already has deployed all Galileo satellites launched to date, and carried out four missions for Europe's vast Earth observation program, Copernicus.

Following the success of this latest Galileo mission from the Guiana Space Center, witnessed by key players in the European space community, Arianespace will carry out three more missions for European institutions in 2018. Two emblematic missions are coming up for ESA: the August 21 Vega launch of a wind study satellite called Aeolus; and then on October 18, an Ariane 5 launch of the BepiColombo spacecraft to explore the planet Mercury (in partnership with the Japanese space agency JAXA). A Soyuz medium launcher will then loft EUMETSAT's meteorological satellite, MetOp-C.

Following the European Commission's announcement of an ambitious space budget proposal for the coming decade, and the ESA Council's confirmation in June of funding for the transition period between Ariane 5 and Ariane 6, Arianespace confirms the availability of its future launchers – Ariane 6 and Vega C – to carry out governmental missions for the European Commission, ESA, EUMETSAT and European countries.

After the announcement of the successful launch, Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation said: "Ariane's latest success demonstrates the world-class capabilities of the European space sector. I would like to congratulate all of the partners involved in the Ariane 5 and Galileo programs, both incredible achievements of European space policy: CNES, ESA, the European Commission, Arianespace, ArianeGroup and all of the European manufacturers. This latest success and the rapid development of Galileo uses shows that the European space sector can do more than hold its own, as it plays a pioneering role in the development of space technology."

Stéphane Israël, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, emphasized: "With this fourth launch of the year, and the third with Ariane 5, Arianespace has proudly accomplished its 10th mission for the Galileo program. Today's mission brings the number of satellites launched by Arianespace for this European constellation to 26 since 2011. I would like to thank the European Commission, and in particular DG GROW, as well as the European Space Agency, for their continued trust. More than ever, Arianespace confirms its assigned mission of guaranteeing independent and reliable access to space for Europe. We are especially pleased that the next two Galileo missions have already been assigned to the A62 version of our new Ariane 6 launch vehicle. Furthermore, we are honored to have had, alongside ESA's Director General, the President of DLR Group and the presidents of CNES and ASI, the highest political authorities in charge of space, attend this launch. I would like to thank Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the French Minister Frédérique Vidal and the Spanish Minister Pedro Duque for experiencing this achievement with us at Europe's Spaceport." Thanks also to French Minister Sébastien Lecornu for his presence: the environment is at the heart of our activities and preoccupations.

"Congratulations to our partners who made the success of this mission possible: OHB System, prime contractor for the four satellites aboard Ariane 5; ArianeGroup, as well as all Ariane industry manufacturers; ESA and the Ariane program's member states; CNES/CSG, our industrial ground segment companies, and all employees at the base.

Of course, congratulations to everyone at Arianespace for this latest success, the penultimate step before the 100th launch of Ariane 5, slated for September 5."

The final flight of a discontinued version of Europe's Ariane 5 rocket added four more spacecraft to Europe's Galileo navigation constellation Wednesday, giving the multibillion-euro network enough satellites to remain on track for the start of full global service in 2020.

Launching with an older, out-of-production upper stage fed by toxic, storable hydrazine fuel, the 155-foot-tall (47-meter) Ariane 5 ES rocket ignited is Vulcain 2 main engine at 1125:01 GMT (7:25:01 a.m. EDT; 8:25:01 a.m. French Guiana time) from the Guiana Space Center on the northeastern shore of South America.

Seven seconds later, twin solid rocket boosters fired in unison to send the Ariane 5 launcher into a clear morning sky over the spaceport in French Guiana. The boosters' steerable nozzles guided the rocket toward the northeast, and the strap-on motors burned their solid propellant and jettisoned around 2 minutes, 19 seconds, after liftoff.

Guzzling super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen at a rate of 705 pounds (320 kilograms) per second, the Vulcain 2 engine fired for nine minutes before the core stage dropped away to fall back into Earth's atmosphere.

The Ariane 5's upper stage Aestus engine fired moments later, burning nearly 11 minutes to reach an elliptical transfer orbit ranging more than 14,000 miles (nearly 23,000 kilometers) above Earth. After a three-hour coast, the Aestus engine reignited for more than six minutes, reshaping its orbit to reach a circular path around the planet.

Telemetry radioed from the rocket to launch controllers in French Guiana indicated the four 1,576-pound (715-kilogram) Galileo satellites separated from their carrier module in two pairs, spaced 20 minutes apart, as intended.

A separate control team in Toulouse, France, took charge of the satellites soon after separation from the Ariane 5 rocket. Engineers there confirmed all four spacecraft were healthy after unfurling their power-generating solar panels, following a planned post-launch activation sequence.

Officials declared the launch a success, giving Europe's Galileo navigation fleet 26 satellites, including 22 craft launched in the last four years. The 26 Galileo satellites launched to date rode seven Soyuz boosters and three Ariane 5 rockets into orbit, completing the program's initial deployment in space.

"Today, as you saw, all the parameters were green, and the sky was perfectly blue," said Stephane Israel, CEO of Arianespace, in a post-launch speech at the spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. "It was an outstanding success for Europe, with 12 Galileo satellites launched in less than three years by Ariane 5."

Wednesday's mission was the last flight of the Ariane 5 ES version of Europe's workhorse launcher. All future Ariane 5 launches will use the Ariane 5 ECA configuration, the most commonly-used variant of the European rocket.

The difference between the two variants is the Ariane 5 ECA flies with a hydrogen-fueled HM7B upper stage engine, which can only be ignited once in space. Missions such as Galileo satellite deployments require multiple upper stage engine firings, while most commercial satellite launches only need one.

Ariane Group, the prime contractor for the Ariane rocket family and parent company of Arianespace, is developing a new engine named Vinci for Europe's next-generation Ariane 6 rocket. The Vinci is designed to be reignited in space.

Paul Verhoef, director of navigation at the European Space Agency, said the Galileo network remains on track for full operational capability in 2020, a milestone further cemented with Wednesday's successful launch.

ESA is a technical and procurement agent on the Galileo program, which is managed by the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union.

The program is projected to cost EU member states 10 billion euros ($11.7 billion) from its inception through 2020, according to the European Commission.

Elżbieta Bieńkowska, European commissioner for internal market, industry and entrepreneurship, called Wednesday's launch an "important milestone in the history of Galileo."

"This launch brings the constellation to 26 satellites, and really takes Galileo one step closer to its full operational capability."

Once complete, the Galileo constellation will be made up of around 30 satellites, including 24 operational spacecraft and approximately six spares spread among three orbital planes 14,429 miles (23,222 kilometers) above Earth.

The satellites launched Wednesday are the last of a second batch of navigation platforms ordered from OHB of Germany, which builds the spacecraft, and British-based SSTL, provider of the navigation payloads.

Officials said the addition of the four satellites launched Wednesday — along with the eventual incorporation of two Galileo spacecraft launched into an incorrect orbit in 2014 and the activation of Galileo's ground systems — should allow the European Commission to declare the network ready for full operations in 2020.

"Not only is the Galileo performance promised to be very good, it is very good," said Rodrigo da Costa, Galileo services program manager at the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency, or GSA.

"Seven years on, we've have 26 satellites in orbit," said Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of CNES, the French space agency. "We've got a system that's becoming the best in the world. We're talking about 400 million users. The numbers are constantly increasing.

"The accuracy is tremendous," Le Gall said in remarks after Wednesday's launch. "With our system, we know actually which side of the street we're on."

Most new smartphones incorporate Galileo data alongside GPS signals in their navigation apps, and more cars are equipped with Galileo-compatible navigation systems each year, officials said. The combination of GPS and Galileo signals provider users with more accurate position and time fixes than possible with a single network.

Galileo's full operational capability milestone planned for 2020 will come when the "the constellation is complete, fully operational, with all the ground segment," Verhoef said.

"This is often forgotten," Verhoef told reporters Tuesday. "The focus is always that we launch satellites, but I can tell you a lot of the deployment, in reality, is happening on the ground. All of that needs to be ready, included and working together as a system before you can declare any kind of operational capability."

The four satellites launched Wednesday are nicknamed Anna, Ellen, Samuel and Tara, the names of children who won a European Commission painting competition.

Verhoef said engineers have resolved a problem that caused multiple atomic clocks to fail on some of the older Galileo navigation satellites. None of the clock failures have affected any satellite's navigation capability, but some spacecraft lost redundancy in their navigation payloads.

"The clocks on the ground were repaired, and the ones on order were rectified, and we had to take a number of operational measures on the clocks in orbit," Verhoef said, declining to provide details on the corrective actions during a pre-launch conference call with reporters.

"It was, as often happens with these things, a very small mistake, but it led to a rather big result, and you just have to dig very deep and go to the specialists in order to find what has happened," Verhoef said. "What resulted was a short circuit internally in the clocks, and of course, after you have a short circuit, it is over, and they are dead."

Arianespace's next mission is scheduled for liftoff Aug. 21, when a light-class solid-fueled Vega launcher will send ESA's Aeolus Earth science satellite into orbit to measure global wind profiles. That will be followed by another Ariane 5 mission — the 100th Ariane 5 launch — on Sept. 15 with two commercial communications satellites.
