SpaceX has confirmed that its next-generation Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket will debut in early May, according to statements fr om Bangabandhu project director Md Mesbahuzzaman.

This slight shift from late April to early May follows shortly after an email interview SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell gave to AviationWeek (http://m.aviationweek.com/space/spacex-debut-falcon-9-block-5-april), wh ere she confirmed that Bangabandhu-1 would in fact be launched by the first Block 5 Falcon 9 booster and sketched out a rough outline of the highly-reusable rocket's future (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-falcon-9-block-5-rapid-reuse-rockets/).

On Monday 30 April, SpaceX will roll the Bangabandhu-1 vehicle out to LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center, FL (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/?s=LC-39A), for Static Fire.

This will be the first time that a Block 5 Falcon 9 (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/?s=Block+5) graces a SpaceX launch pad and will be the first Block 5's final major test before its inaugural flight.

Once connected to Pad-A's systems, SpaceX will put the first Block 5 (core B1046) through a standard countdown and fueling process, validating all of the booster and second stage systems up to and including an engine firing.

The core has already undergone Acceptance Testing at McGregor, Texas (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/?s=McGregor). At a pre-launch news conference for the TESS flight last week, Hans Koenigsmann of SpaceX stated that the first Block 5's acceptance runs were extremely smooth, noting that the Block 5 upgrade made it through all of its McGregor testing far faster than previous major Block upgrades to the Falcon 9 have.

An exact window for Static Fire on Monday is not yet known, but typical windows for such events usually stretch for no more than six hours based on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2017/03/air-force-reveals-48-launches-year-cape/) and KSC Emergency Operations Support capabilities.

As with flight-proven boosters and the Falcon Heavy (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/?s=Falcon+Heavy) Static Fire campaigns, the first Block 5 Static Fire is expected to last between 5 and 7 seconds to ensure a good amount of data on engine health and performance is gathered.

Once a successful Static Fire is complete, the Bangabandhu-1 vehicle will be safed, detanked, taken horizontal at the pad, and transported back into the Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF) at LC-39A where it will then be mated with its payload.

Bangabandhu-1 will be the first satellite for the Southeast Asian nation of Bangladesh.

Inside the HIF, the rocket and payload will undergo final launch checks as engineers work through the standard L-2 day Launch Readiness Review (LRR).

Once the LRR is complete and all approvals received, the first Block 5 will be taken back out to Pad-A for launch.

Bangabandhu-1 is currently slated to launch No Earlier Than (NET) Friday, 4 May 2018 in a roughly 2 hour 25 minute launch window extending from 16:00-18:25 EDT (20:00-22:25 UTC).

SpaceX technicians at Cape Canaveral are readying for the first launch of an upgraded Falcon 9 rocket configuration next week, a mission that will debut changes to make the launcher safer for astronauts and make it easier — and less expensive — for the company to reuse first stage boosters.

The launch, currently planned for May 4 during a launch window that opens at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT), will loft the European-built Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite for Bangladesh.

The upgraded rocket, known as the "Block 5" iteration of the Falcon 9, is a brand new vehicle that was recently delivered to the Florida spaceport after a final full-duration test-firing of its nine Merlin 1D engines on a test stand at SpaceX's development site in McGregor, Texas.

The changes include updates to make the Falcon 9 rocket meet NASA's human-rating requirements, and introduces modifications to allow SpaceX to recover and reuse first stage boosters with greater speed.

A hold-down engine firing of the Falcon 9 rocket is planned Monday, April 30, at launch pad 39A, the former Apollo- and shuttle-era launch complex at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Liftoff from pad 39A will follow May 4 after ground crews return the rocket to SpaceX's nearby hangar for attachment of the Bangabandhu 1 satellite.

It will be the first rocket launch from pad 39A since SpaceX's first Falcon Heavy launcher, made by bolting three Falcon 9 first stage boosters together, lifted off from the Space Coast on Feb. 6.

"Block 5 is here," said Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of build and flight reliability at SpaceX, in a briefing with reporters last week. "We're all excited about that. We had a good test campaign in Texas. I believe that it was faster than we've ever had for a new block upgrade, but it certainly takes time to get everything worked out and tested on a block upgrade. So I'm looking forward to that launch in early May."

"Block 5 basically summarizes all that we learned on reusability," Koenigsmann said. "Whenever we recover a booster and then it goes through refurbishment, we find things that are giving us ... lessons for the next block. In this case, we tried to summarize all of these lessons learned into a booster that then is able to fly, and be recovered and fly again multiple times without a lot of refurbishment.

"That's basically the key thing on Block 5," Koenigsmann said. "It's a reliability update that combines reliability and reusability."

One of the major changes on the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 is the addition of more resilient heat shield material at the base of the rocket's first stage, according to Koenigsmann.

The Block 5 engines can also produce more power and feature a redesign to make the engines easier to reuse on multiple flights. The Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 will also incorporate changes to meet NASA safety requirements for launches with astronauts heading for the International Space Station.

"Block 5 is the last big spin on Falcon 9, and it's largely driven by the upgrade that we needed to make for the commercial crew program, as well as national security space launch requirements," said Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, during a question-and-answer session with reporters last year.

NASA awarded contracts to SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will take off on Falcon 9 rockets from the Kennedy Space Center, and the company plans an orbital test flight with two astronauts around the end of this year, although NASA officials expect the first crewed demonstration flight in 2019.

SpaceX engineers also added a permanent fix on the Block 5 upgrade to resolve a concern with turbine wheel cracks inside the Merlin engine's turbopump, and new helium tanks that are not susceptible to pooling frozen liquid oxygen and friction that led to the explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad in 2016.

"There is a performance upgrade here as well, largely to get more margin for (those) very demanding customers," Shotwell said. "There's some manufacturing improvements. We've addressed the turbine wheel issue (on Block 5). There are probably 100 or so changes on that vehicle."

Block 5 is the most significant upgrade to the Falcon 9 rocket since SpaceX debuted the "full thrust" configuration in December 2015, which was the first time the company used super-chilled, densified RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants.

Since then, SpaceX has flown beefed up titanium grid fins to replace the single-use aluminum steering wings used during the descent of the Falcon 9's first stage. A Falcon 9 launch from California in February debuted a slightly larger payload fairing. Both enhancements are expected to regularly fly on Falcon 9 Block 5 missions.

In an interview on "The Space Show" online radio program last summer, Shotwell said the Block 5 is important for SpaceX's ambition to reuse Falcon 9 first stage boosters more often, and at less expense. Boosters based on earlier Falcon 9 designs can be reused two or three times, but a Block 5 first stage could be reused "a dozen or so" times, she said.

The ultimate objective of the Block 5 upgrade is to make the Falcon 9's first stage capable of flying up to 100 times with refurbishment, SpaceX officials have said. The Falcon 9 Block 5's first stage is designed to launch up to 10 times with minimal rework between missions, according to SpaceX.

The fastest turnaround between flights of the same Falcon 9 booster to date has been approximately five months, and no Falcon 9 first stage has flown more than twice.

Components on the Block 5 rocket, such as valves, were planned to be requalified and redesigned at more extreme operating conditions and for longer durations, she said on The Space Show.

Other changes on the Block 5 upgrade include new landing legs that can be retracted without the need for recovery teams to remove them from the rocket, and the interstage structure that connects the first and second stages will be black and unpainted.

The first stage's engine section, known as the "octaweb," will be bolted to the bottom of the booster on the Block 5 configuration. The octaweb arrangement, which sets the first stage's nine Merlin engines at the bottom of the rocket and routes liquid propellants to the powerplants, was welded to the rocket on earlier Falcon 9 designs.

The previous version of the Falcon 9 rocket will fly a few more missions after the Bangabandhu 1 launch. Two additional Falcon 9 flights are planned later in May — one from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and one from Cape Canaveral — and both will use previously-flown first stages.

The last newly-manufactured "Block 4" Falcon 9 launched with NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite on April 18. The booster landed on SpaceX's drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean, and SpaceX plans to reuse it on the company's next resupply launch to the International Space Station in late June, pending final NASA approval.

The Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite se t to launch on the maiden Falcon 9 Block 5 flight arrived at Cape Canaveral on March 30 after a trans-Atlantic flight aboard an Antonov cargo plane from its Thales Alenia Space factory in France.

Built in Europe for the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the dual-band satellite will provide Ku-band and C-band television broadcast and data relay services across Bangladesh and surrounding regions.

Thales Alenia Space will deliver the Bangabandhu 1 satellite to its governmental operator after launch. The so-called "delivery-in-orbit" arrangement puts Thales Alenia Space in charge of building the spacecraft, procuring launch services, and ground tracking and control infrastructure.

Launch crews at the Kennedy Space Center are preparing to roll out an upgraded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in preparation for a hold-down firing at pad 39A as soon as Friday.

The static fire test is a major step toward launch of SpaceX's first Falcon 9 "Block 5" rocket next week. Liftoff is currently scheduled no earlier than Monday, but the launch could be delayed.

The two-stage rocket, without its satellite payload, will be filled with super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants Friday as SpaceX conducts a countdown rehearsal leading up to ignition of the rocket's nine first stage Merlin engines.

The Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 rocket features changes to make the first stage easier to reuse, along with safety and performance enhancements that will allow NASA to certify the launcher for astronauts.

SpaceX's launch team loaded liquid propellants into the company's first upgraded Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket Friday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the countdown rehearsal culminated in a brief ignition of the launcher's nine Merlin main engines on the launch pad.

The hold-down test-firing occurred at 7:25 p.m. EDT (2325 GMT) Friday on pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, passing a major milestone in preparation for launch of the upgraded Falcon 9, which features changes SpaceX says will make the rocket more reusable and more reliable.

After a data review to examine how the rocket and ground systems performed during Friday evening's hotfire test, SpaceX will connect the Falcon 9 rocket to its payload — the French-built Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite for the government of Bangladesh — inside a nearby hangar, then return the vehicle to launch pad.

SpaceX confirmed a good outcome of the static fire test in a tweet Friday evening.

Liftoff was targeted for Monday at 4:06 p.m. EDT (2006 GMT), but SpaceX's statement suggested the mission will be delayed later next week. The company typically releases target launch dates shortly after a successful static fire test.

The launch time is not expected to change significantly on other potential launch dates next week.

The changes introduced on the Block 5 configuration of the Falcon 9 rocket include updates to make the Falcon 9 rocket meet NASA's human-rating requirements. There are also modifications to allow SpaceX to recover and reuse first stage boosters with greater speed.

It will be the first rocket launch from pad 39A since SpaceX's first Falcon Heavy launcher, made by bolting three Falcon 9 first stage boosters together, lifted off from the Space Coast on Feb. 6.

"Block 5 basically summarizes all that we learned on reusability," said Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of build and flight reliability at SpaceX, in a briefing last month. "Whenever we recover a booster and then it goes through refurbishment, we find things that are giving us ... lessons for the next block. In this case, we tried to summarize all of these lessons learned into a booster that then is able to fly, and be recovered and fly again multiple times without a lot of refurbishment.

"That's basically the key thing on Block 5," Koenigsmann said. "It's a reliability update that combines reliability and reusability."

One of the major changes on the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 is the addition of more resilient heat shield material at the base of the rocket's first stage, according to Koenigsmann.

The Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 also incorporates changes to meet NASA safety requirements for launches with astronauts heading for the International Space Station.

"Block 5 is the last big spin on Falcon 9, and it's largely driven by the upgrade that we needed to make for the commercial crew program, as well as national security space launch requirements," said Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, during a question-and-answer session with reporters last year.

There's a NOTAM (Notice To Airmen) now filed for the Falcon 9 (Bangabandhu-1) launch on May 8 (only a one day side step to the right), which would align with the usual timeline between a nominal Static Fire test and a launch. Bangabandhu-1 now set to be launched May 10

The new date for launching Bangabandhu-1, the first ever satellite of the country, has been set on May 10, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) confirmed today.

The country's first geostationary communications satellite will be launched by Falcon 9 rocket of US launching firm Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) from Cape Canaveral launching pad of Florida.

The launch will take place at 4:00pm (Florida local time), Md Zakir Hossain Khan, senior assistant director of BTRC told The Daily Star.

On May 4 (Florida local time), a "fire test" of Falcon 9 rocket was successfully conducted.

After analysing the data collected from the test, the final date has been fixed, the BTRC official said.

Six officials of the BTRC and satellite project left Dhaka on May 5 and 42 more, including two state ministers and at least six secretaries, will leave today. The Prime Minister's ICT Affair Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who is now in the USA, would lead the delegation.

The May-7 launch date of Bangabandhu-1 was deferred on technical grounds. It was supposed to be launched in December and the date has been pushed back several times due to unfavourable weather and technical reasons.

A group of journalists from Dhaka and some government officials have been staying in Florida since the last week of April on this purpose.

The 3.7-tonne satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space, a France satellite company.

The launch of Bangladesh's first communications satellite on top of a new version of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for Thursday, officials said Monday, after a data review following a hold-down engine firing last week.

SpaceX confirmed the target launch date in a tweet Monday, and the launch window Thursday opens at 4:12 p.m. EDT (2012 GMT) and extends until 6:22 p.m. EDT (2222 GMT).

Launch crews accomplished a hotfire test of the Falcon 9 rocket, without its satellite payload on-board, Friday at pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Workers lowered the Falcon 9 horizontal Saturday in preparation for rollback to a nearby hangar, where the Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite will be attached to the rocket's second stage.

The fully-assembled launcher will be rolled out to pad 39A again this week in preparation for Thursday's launch.

The upgraded Falcon 9 rocket, known as the "Block 5" configuration, features changes that SpaceX says will make the launcher's first stage easier to reuse multiple times with minimal refurbishment. There are also safety modifications, including redesigned helium pressurant tanks to eliminate the cause of a Falcon 9 rocket explosion on a Cape Canaveral launch pad in 2016, which destroyed a commercial communications satellite before liftoff.

Built in Cannes, France, by Thales Alenia Space, the Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite weighs around four tons (more than 3.5 metric tons), and will provide Ku-band and C-band television broadcast and data relay services across Bangladesh and surrounding regions. Thales Alenia Space will hand over management of the spacecraft to its owner, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, after launch.

The weather outlook for Thursday's launch window is favorable, with an 80 percent probability of acceptable conditions for liftoff of the Falcon 9.

The official launch weather forecast issued Monday by the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron predicts partly cloudy skies, winds from the east-southeast at 15 to 20 mph, and a temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit at launch time.

The only weather concern involves thick clouds.

"Clear skies abound in Central Florida as the frontal boundary has pushed south of the area," forecasters wrote in a weather synposis Monday morning. "The next few days should be similar with little clouds and low-level northeasterly winds along the Space Coast.

"On Thursday, low-level winds become more easterly, signaling the high pressure ridge is reorienting north. This opens the door for a tropical wave propagating along the periphery of the ridge to move towards the spaceport. Upper-level clouds associated with the easterly wave begins to move over the spaceport on Thursday."

SpaceX has not published any written information about the Block 5 upgrades, but company executives have made several statements about the modifications leading up to the mission.

"Block 5 basically summarizes all that we learned on reusability," said Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX's vice president of build and flight reliability, in a briefing with reporters last month. "Whenever we recover a booster and then it goes through refurbishment, we find things that are giving us ... lessons for the next block. In this case, we tried to summarize all of these lessons learned into a booster that then is able to fly, and be recovered and fly again multiple times without a lot of refurbishment.

"That's basically the key thing on Block 5," Koenigsmann said. "It's a reliability update that combines reliability and reusability."

One of the major changes on the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 is the addition of more resilient heat shield material at the base of the rocket's first stage, according to Koenigsmann.

SpaceX officials have said rocket boosters based on the new Block 5 design can be reused 10 times with little rework between missions, and potentially up to 100 times with refurbishment. First stage boosters from the previous version of the Falcon 9 rocket have only been flown twice.

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, said the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 rocket also features a performance enhancement, but SpaceX has not detailed how much more the new Falcon 9 configuration can haul into orbit. There is a redesign to make the engines easier to reuse on multiple flights, and the Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 will also incorporate changes to meet NASA safety requirements for launches with astronauts heading for the International Space Station.

"Block 5 is the last big spin on Falcon 9, and it's largely driven by the upgrade that we needed to make for the commercial crew program, as well as national security space launch requirements," Shotwell said during a question-and-answer session with reporters last year.

NASA awarded contracts to SpaceX and Boeing in 2014 to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will take off on Falcon 9 rockets from the Kennedy Space Center, and the company plans an orbital test flight with two astronauts around the end of this year, although NASA officials expect the first crewed demonstration flight in 2019.

SpaceX engineers also added a permanent fix on the Block 5 upgrade to resolve a concern with turbine wheel cracks inside the Merlin engine's turbopump, and new helium tanks that are not susceptible to pooling frozen liquid oxygen and friction that led to the explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad in 2016.

"There is a performance upgrade here as well, largely to get more margin for (those) very demanding customers," Shotwell said. "There's some manufacturing improvements. We've addressed the turbine wheel issue (on Block 5). There are probably 100 or so changes on that vehicle."

Block 5 is the most significant upgrade to the Falcon 9 rocket since SpaceX debuted the "full thrust" configuration in December 2015, which was the first time the company used super-chilled, densified RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants.

Since then, SpaceX has flown beefed up titanium grid fins to replace the single-use aluminum steering wings used during the descent of the Falcon 9's first stage. A Falcon 9 launch from California in February debuted a slightly larger payload fairing. Both enhancements are expected to regularly fly on Falcon 9 Block 5 missions.

In an interview on "The Space Show" online radio program last summer, Shotwell said SpaceX re-qualified valves to operate in more extreme conditions and for longer durations on Block 5 missions.

The Block 5 also introduces new landing legs designed to be retracted without removing them from the rocket. The interstage structure between the first and second stages is also black, not white as in earlier Falcon 9 rockets.

The first stage's engine section, known as the "octaweb," is bolted to the bottom of the booster on the Block 5 configuration, according to statements made by SpaceX officials in recent months. The octaweb arrangement, which sets the first stage's nine Merlin engines at the bottom of the rocket and routes liquid propellants to the powerplants, was welded to the rocket on earlier Falcon 9 designs.

T-minus 82 minutes and counting. Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and chief executive, just spoke with reporters about the maiden flight of the Falcon 9 Block 5, the last major upgrade of the company's workhorse rocket before the debut of a giant new booster dubbed the Big Falcon Rocket in the 2020s.

"This will be the last major version of Falcon 9 before BFR," Musk said a few minutes ago. "We expect this to be a mainstay of SpaceX's business. We think (it) will probably wind up with something on the order of 300 flights, maybe more, of Falcon 9 Block 5 before retirement."

He said the Block 5's first stage booster is designed to fly 10 times "with no scheduled refurbishment." With "moderate scheduled maintenance," Block 5 first stages could be capable of 100 missions, Musk said.

"Our goal, just to give you a sense of how reusable we think it will be, we intend to demonstrate two orbital launches of the same Falcon 9 vehicle within 24 hours no earlier than next year," Musk said. "It's going to take some time because we're going to be careful and deliberate about this."

Musk said the most important changes to the Block 5 address NASA human-rating requirements, ahead of the planned launches of astronauts to the International Space Station on Falcon 9 rockets beginning late this year or some time in 2019.

"The intent is for (Falcon 9 Block 5) to be the most reliable rocket ever built," Musk said. "That is the design intent ... I hope today doesn't punish me for these words, but that is certainly the intent, and I think our most conservative customers would agree."

The rocket's modifications also make provide a performance boost.

There's an 8 percent increase in sea level thrust from the Falcon 9's nine Merlin first stage engines, up to around 190,000 pounds of thrust each, Musk said. The upper stage's single vacuum-rated Merlin engine on Block 5 can generate 220,000 pounds of thrust, but will be throttled back to 210,000 force-pounds on today's mission.

"Both the efficiency of the engine and thrust of the engine have increased, (without) any material change to the mass of the engine. The thrust-to-weight ratio is truly incredible at this point. It was already the highest thrust-to-weight engine in the world."

T-minus 63 minutes. Musk also addressed changes to the outer coating of the rocket, aimed at better shielding the first stage from extreme re-entry temperatures.

"We also have a lot of new thermal protection technology," Musk said. "If you look, aesthetically, there's the black interstage. That is the structure that joins the upper and lower stage, as well as the raceways, the landing legs, they all use a new thermal protection material developed at SpaceX which is highly resuabile and does not require paint. It's hydrophobic. It does not trap water. This was quite a challenging thing to do.

"I kind of like the aesthetics of it more," he said. If you look back at the old Falcon 1 rocket, I really like having the black interstage. The interstage is made of carbon fiber. It adds a different aesthetic to the rocket. Obviously, aesthetics are a minor factor in designing a rocket."

The octaweb, a structure which contains the first stage's nine engines at the base of the rocket, is also made of a higher-strength aluminum. It's bolted on the base of the Falcon 9 Block 5, while it was welded to the booster on previous versions of SpaceX's workhorse vehicle.

"It also has quite a bit of thermal protection on the inside in case of an engine fire or something like that, so that it does not melt the octaweb."

The first stage's four landing legs also sport changes.

The locking mechanism that kept the legs deployed during the booster's final descent and post-flight processing has been removed. The landing gear now has an internal locking system, Musk said.

""Opening the landing gear and closing the landing gear is now a very easy thing to do, whereas previously it required a couple of hours to re-stow the landing gear. That can now be done with an actuator."

The heat shield attached to the bottom of the rocket near the booster's engine section has also been beefed up.

"We replaced the old composite structure with a high-temperature titanium structure to support rapid reuse," Musk said. "The base heat shield will also be, in some parts, actively cooled with water."

He said data crunched from past Falcon 9 flights indicated that some parts of the base of the rocket exposed to super-hot temperatures during the rocket's hypersonic re-entry needed better protection.

"You kind of have to use a high-melting point material, a high-temperature material, plus active water cooling in certain places on the base of the heat shield."

To sum up the Block 5 upgrades, Musk said the new Falcon 9 configuration is a "bit better in every way."

"It has a better flight computer, engine controllers, a new, more advanced inertial measurement system."

Other improvements that will fly regularly on the Falcon 9 Block 5 have already been demonstrated during past Falcon 9 missions. Those include a new-generation payload fairing, which covers satellite payloads during launch, to make the shroud recoverable and reusable. Titanium grid fins, which likewise have already made their debut on previous Falcon 9 missions, will fly on every Block 5 launch, replacing aluminum steering winglets used on descent that were susceptible to heat damage.

A fresh weather forecast issued by the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron after Thursday's scrubbed launch attempt now shows a 70 percent probability of acceptable conditions during Friday's launch window.

That is an improvement over the 60 percent chance of favorable weather for Friday during previous forecasts.

The prime weather concern is still with the potential of violating the thick cloud rule.

Forecasters predict a few clouds at 2,500 feet and a broken cloud deck at 28,000 feet. Winds should be from the east at 12 to 17 mph, with a temperature around 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

During countdowns for flights of the previous version of the Falcon 9 rocket, kerosene was loaded into the launcher beginning at T-minus 70 minutes, followed by the start of liquid oxygen tanking at T-minus 35 minutes.

RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen are now being pumped into the Falcon 9 rocket. The liquid oxygen is chilled to near minus 340 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 206 degrees Celsius).

On Friday, May 11th at 4:14 p.m. EDT, SpaceX successfully launched Bangabandhu Satellite-1 from historic Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX debuted a more reusable, higher-thrust model of the Falcon 9 rocket Friday, hauling Bangladesh's first communications satellite into orbit from Florida's Space Coast.

The successful launch propelled SpaceX closer to launching astronauts for NASA, which will fly on the same "Block 5" model of the Falcon 9 rocket that flew Friday.

Musk said the enhanced launch vehicle will also be easier to reuse, moving toward the California-based space transport company's ambitious mission of drastically cutting launch costs and building settlements on other worlds.

The launcher's window-rattling blastoff from Kennedy Space Center's pad 39A, the historic complex once used by NASA's Saturn 5 moon rocket and numerous space shuttle missions, occurred at 4:14 p.m. EDT (2014 GMT) Friday.

Turning toward the east, the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket arced over the Atlantic Ocean with the Bangabandhu 1 communications satellite, a French-built spacecraft destined to provide television and data relay services for the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

A launch try Thursday ended at T-minus 1 minute after computers on-board the Falcon 9 detected an out-of-bounds parameter. No such glitches appeared during Friday's countdown.

In a feat once considered by many to be too daunting to attempt, the Falcon 9's 15-story first stage booster made a pinpoint landing on SpaceX's sea-going drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" parked nearly 400 miles (630 kilometers) east of Cape Canaveral in the Atlantic Ocean.

After dropping away from the rocket's upper stage two-and-a-half minutes into the mission, the booster pulsed thrusters fed by pressurized nitrogen gas to flip around to fly tail first, then reignited a subset of its nine engines to steer toward the recovery barge and slow down for landing.

Four titanium winglets extended from the top of the first stage to stabilize the cigar-shaped vehicle, and four landing legs unfurled at the bottom of the rocket just before touchdown.

The on-target landing was the 25th time SpaceX has retrieved one of its Falcon rocket boosters intact after a space launch. Fourteen of the landings have come on one of the company's drone ships at sea, and SpaceX has returned 11 rockets to land for inspections or reuse.

Like all its launches, SpaceX's chief objective on Friday's mission was the deployment of the Bangabandhu 1 satellite in orbit. Two burns by the Falcon 9's upper stage engine, a Merlin powerplant optimized for in-space maneuvers, guided the roughly 8,200-pound (nearl 3,750-kilogram) payload into an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit for separation around 33 minutes after liftoff.

Named for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the Bangladeshi nation who was assassinated in 1975, the spacecraft will provide telecom, television and other data services to Bangladesh and neighboring regions during a 15-year mission.

The satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space of Cannes, France, which also took charge of developing an operations center in Bangladesh, training Bangladeshi engineers, and arranging for the craft's launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The guidance computer on-board the Falcon 9 aimed to release Bangabandhu 1 into an orbit ranging between 186 miles (300 kilometers) and 22,186 miles (35,706 kilometers) in altitude, tilted at an inclination of 19.3 degrees to the equator, according to Gilles Obadia, Thales' program manager for the mission.

An official from Thales Alenia Space said after Friday's launch that ground controllers in Cannes established contact with the Bangabandhu 1 satellite in orbit.

Bangabandhu 1's on-board engine will circularize its orbit at geostationary altitude within the first 11 days of the mission, Obadia said, to begin several weeks of in-orbit testing before Thales hands over control of the spacecraft to its Bangladeshi end user.

The satellite will be parked in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles over the equator, locking its velocity to match Earth's rotation at a position at 119.1 degrees east longitude. Bangabandhu 1 carries 26 Ku-band and 14 C-band transponders.

Once the Falcon 9's first stage returns to Port Canaveral in a few days, engineers will inspect and disassemble parts of the Block 5 booster to study how it performed. Eventually, the upgrades debuting on the Falcon 9 Block 5 will allow the first stage booster to be reused 10 times without refurbishment, Musk said.

"We are going to be very rigourous in taking this rocket apart and confirming our design assumptions to be confident that it is indeed able to be reused without being taken apart," he said. "Ironically, we need to take it apart to confirm that it does not need to be taken apart. So this rocket probably won't re-fly for a couple of months."

Boosters based on the upgraded Block 5 model, which Musk said is actually "Version 6" of the Falcon 9 rocket, could fly hundreds of times, delivering satellites, cargo ships and astronauts to space, the billionaire entrepreneur told reporters Thursday before the mission's first launch attempt.

It will ultimately be replaced by the Big Falcon Rocket, an enormous rocket SpaceX is developing that the company says will generate more power than any launch vehicle in history.

The BFR is expected to begin flying space missions in the 2020s.

"This will be the last major version of Falcon 9 before BFR," Musk said. "We expect this to be a mainstay of SpaceX's business. We think (it) will probably wind up with something on the order of 300 flights, maybe more, of Falcon 9 Block 5 before retirement."

He said the Block 5's first stage booster is designed to fly 10 times "with no scheduled refurbishment." With "moderate scheduled maintenance," Block 5 first stages could be capable of 100 missions, Musk said.

Between 30 and 50 boosters for Falcon 9 Block 5 vehicles could be manufactured to meet customer demand, each flying multiple times, he said.

"Just to give you a sense of how reusable we think it will be, we intend to demonstrate two orbital launches of the same Falcon 9 vehicle within 24 hours no earlier than next year," Musk said. "It's going to take some time because we're going to be careful and deliberate about this."

Musk said the most important changes to the Block 5 address NASA human-rating requirements, ahead of the planned launches of astronauts to the International Space Station on Falcon 9 rockets beginning late this year or some time in 2019.

"The intent is for (Falcon 9 Block 5) to be the most reliable rocket ever built," Musk said. "That is certainly the intent, and I think our most conservative customers would agree."

For crewed missions, the structural components of a rocket must withstand higher stress than parts used on a typical satellite launcher.

"The rocket has to be designed to 25 percent above the worst case of the expected load in the case of a satellite launcher," Musk said. "For a human-rated launcher, it has to be designed 40 percent above the worst-case loads ... That's really difficult to do without making the rocket really heavy. That's hardcore stuff."

The Falcon 9 Block 5's avionics are also multi-fault tolerant, meaning the rocket can still reach orbit after multiple system failures.

The rocket's modifications also provide an uptick in performance.

There's an 8 percent increase in sea level thrust from the Falcon 9's nine Merlin first stage engines, up to around 190,000 pounds of thrust each, Musk said. The upper stage's single vacuum-rated Merlin engine on Block 5 can generate 220,000 pounds of thrust, but was to be throttled back to 210,000 force-pounds on Friday's mission.

"Both the efficiency of the engine and thrust of the engine have increased, (without) any material change to the mass of the engine. The thrust-to-weight ratio is truly incredible at this point. It was already the highest thrust-to-weight engine in the world."

Musk also addressed changes to the outer coating of the rocket, aimed at better shielding the first stage from extreme re-entry temperatures.

"We also have a lot of new thermal protection technology," Musk said. "If you look, aesthetically, there's the black interstage. That is the structure that joins the upper and lower stage, as well as the raceways, the landing legs, they all use a new thermal protection material developed at SpaceX, which is highly reusable and does not require paint. It's hydrophobic. It does not trap water. This was quite a challenging thing to do.

"I kind of like the aesthetics of it more," he said. "If you look back at the old Falcon 1 rocket, I really like having the black interstage. The interstage is made of carbon fiber. It adds a different aesthetic to the rocket. Obviously, aesthetics are a minor factor in designing a rocket."

The octaweb, a structure which contains the first stage's nine engines at the base of the rocket, is also made of a higher-strength aluminum. It's bolted on the base of the Falcon 9 Block 5, while it was welded to the booster on previous versions of SpaceX's workhorse vehicle.

"It also has quite a bit of thermal protection on the inside in case of an engine fire or something like that, so that it does not melt the octaweb."

The first stage's four landing legs also sport changes.

The locking mechanism that kept the legs deployed during the booster's final descent and post-flight processing has been removed. The landing gear now has an internal locking system, Musk said.

"Opening the landing gear and closing the landing gear is now a very easy thing to do, whereas previously it required a couple of hours to re-stow the landing gear. That can now be done with an actuator."

The heat shield attached to the bottom of the rocket near the booster's engine section has also been beefed up.

"We replaced the old composite structure with a high-temperature titanium structure to support rapid reuse," Musk said. "The base heat shield will also be, in some parts, actively cooled with water."

He said data crunched from past Falcon 9 flights indicated that some parts of the base of the launcher exposed to super-hot temperatures during the rocket's hypersonic re-entry needed better protection.

"You kind of have to use a high-melting point material, a high-temperature material, plus active water cooling in certain places on the base of the heat shield."

To sum up the Block 5 upgrades, Musk said the new Falcon 9 configuration is a "bit better in every way."

"It has a better flight computer, engine controllers, a new, more advanced inertial measurement system."

Other improvements that will fly regularly on the Falcon 9 Block 5 have already been demonstrated during past Falcon 9 missions. Those include a new-generation payload fairing, which covers satellite payloads during launch, to make the shroud recoverable and reusable. Titanium grid fins, which likewise have already made their debut on previous Falcon 9 missions, will fly on every Block 5 launch, replacing aluminum steering winglets used on descent that were susceptible to heat damage.

SpaceX engineers also added a permanent fix on the Block 5 upgrade to resolve a concern with turbine wheel cracks inside the Merlin engine's turbopump, and new helium tanks that are not susceptible to pooling frozen liquid oxygen and friction that led to the explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad in 2016.

Both changes were meant to make the Falcon 9 compliant with NASA human-rating safety standards.

SpaceX has a $2.6 billion contract with NASA to complete development of Crew Dragon, a capsule to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. NASA awarded Boeing a similar deal, giving the agency two U.S. crew transport providers and ending U.S. reliance on Russian Soyuz vehicles for the job.

The first unpiloted test flight of the Crew Dragon is scheduled as soon as late August, but the demo mission could be delayed. A two-person Crew Dragon test flight to the space station could follow by the end of the year, but top NASA managers have said they expect SpaceX and Boeing crewed demonstrations to launch in 2019.

NASA will require seven successful flights of the Falcon 9 Block 5 before flying astronauts on the rocket.

"In human spaceflight, demonstration 'testing like we fly' is a long standing tenant for safe operations and understanding of critical systems," said Cheryl Warner, a NASA spokesperson, in a statement. "Test flights offer a tremendous opportunity to learn, and the commercial crew program, along with SpaceX, will provide rigorous insight into the SpaceX launch manifest and any necessary configuration changes resulting from the test flights."

Friday's launch was SpaceX's ninth mission so far this year. By this time in 2017, SpaceX had achieved five launches of the 18 flights the company logged by the end of the year.

"We're on track to double our launch rate from last year, which was a record launch rate for us," Musk said.

It is a very historical and exciting moment for the entire nation of Bangladesh to watch its very first satellite taking off for Space successfully. This telecommunications and Broadcasting satellite is targeted to narrow the digital divide, as it will take broadcasting and telecommunication services to rural areas and introduce profitable services, including direct-to-home services, across the country and over the region.
 
Thales Alenia Space was in charge of the design, production, testing and the delivery in orbit of Bangabandhu Satellite-1, and also took charge of the two ground segments (Primary and Secondary), which will benefit of the SpaceOps tools for the mission planning and monitoring.

Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is fitted with 26 Ku-Band and 14 C-Band transponders. It offers capacity in Ku-Band over Bangladesh and its territorial waters of the Bay of Bengal, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Indonesia; it also provides capacity in C-Band over the whole region. Bangabandhu Satellite-1 solution includes all necessary components to manage the customer business and to provide end-user services to network operator.

• Broadband : service that allows the end-user (individual, organization, corporation or Government) to remotely access the Internet at high speed with high quality of service.
• Communications Trunks : wide band high data rate point-to-point services

After detaching from the rocket's second stage, which went on to successfully inject Bangladesh's first communications satellite into a geostationary transfer orbit, B1046 reached a peak of around 110 km before reentering Earth's atmosphere. Traveling 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) per second, Block 5 eventually completed a soft landing 500 miles off the Florida coast on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You. The 25th successful Falcon 9 booster recovery, B1046 marked that historic achievement in proper style, dressed with large, black sections of the new SpaceX-developed thermal protection system, among dozens of other major improvements included in the launch vehicle's "Block" upgrade.

Again, B1046 looks almost pristine thanks to its new thermal protection system, described as a sort of felt that is both extremely heat-resistant and hydrophobic. (Tom Cross)

While not visible, the most significant improvements are likely to be found at the base of the first stage's octaweb – now assembled with bolts instead of welds – in the form of a dramatically improved heat shield around its nine Merlin 1D engines (also upgraded, of course). One of the Falcon recovery technicians showed some exceptional interest in the shield and Merlins, likely documenting their condition in extreme detail to inform engineering reviews of the pathfinder rocket after its first flight test. Per CEO Elon Musk's pre-launch phone call with members of the press, SpaceX means to do an extremely thorough disassembly and analysis of B1046 in order to (hopefully) validate many thousands of hours of design, engineering, modeling, and testing. If those reviews are promising, it's extremely likely that B1046 will be reassembled and flown many more times, perhaps one day becoming another historic monument to SpaceX's reusability program and Block 5 upgrade.

Meanwhile, this mission also marked another routine operation for SpaceX's robotic stage-securing robot, unofficially nicknamed Roomba or Octagrabber. This custom-built robot is used to better ensure the safety of SpaceX's recovery crew by allowing them to remain on an accompanying vessel while securing the booster robotically, significantly lowering the chances of it sliding around or tipping over in high sea states.

Teslarati photographer Tom Cross has captured SpaceX technicians removing the landing legs from the first Falcon 9 Block 5 booster, signaling that the end of recovery operations are near.

Of note, it appears that SpaceX chose to conduct this recovery much like previous ones by removing the rocket's legs instead of retracting them, a feature of the Block 5 upgrade prominently noted by CEO Elon Musk and other company officials. A brief time-lapse shows workers carefully removing the legs in a well-worn ballet of heavy machinery, skirting around the massive rocket with expertise developed over the better part of two years of sea and land recoveries of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy boosters.

There are a number of possible reasons for SpaceX choosing to remove B1046's landing legs the 'old-fashioned' way, most relating to the fact that this particular booster is a critical pathfinder for the entire future of Falcon 9 Block 5 (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-falcon-9-hundreds-launches-30-rocket-fleet/). Musk described this attitude in a lengthy and detailed prelaunch briefing:

Both COO Shotwell and Musk have briefly discussed the new functionality (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-falcon-9-block-5-returns-to-port-gallery/) of the upgraded legs in the past few weeks, indicating that they are capable of being rapidly and repeatedly stowed without being removed from the rocket, whereas all past booster reuse has required the slow removable and equally slow reattachment of landing legs, assuming Block 3 and 4 boosters even reuse their same landing legs. At a minimum, Musk's above comment already makes it clear that SpaceX has no plans to reuse this booster immediately, instead conducting an extremely thorough teardown analysis to verify that wear and tear from high-speed atmospheric reentry is within an acceptable range.

Equally plausible, choosing to remove B1046's landing legs instead of testing the new retraction mechanisms may better preserve the leg hardware in its post-landing state (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-successful-block-5-bangabandhu-launch-lan), providing engineers and technicians cleaner and more representative data. One final obvious possibility is that the process of flight-testing new Block 5 leg hardware caused damage or led to some off-nominal telemetry and other visible faults, thus preventing them from retracting.

Because the next Block 5 booster (B1047) is likely nearing its own debut after a thorough round of testing in Texas, captured by an aerial photographer (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-shotwell-bfr-mars-rocket-texas/), SpaceX may be pushing hard to complete its post-landing analysis of B1046 as quickly as possible to make way for the imminent launches of several new boosters. If the company hopes to maintain its impressive 2018 flight rate of one launch every two weeks throughout the rest of the year, they will need to refly Block 5 boosters at least 10 times – the last flight-proven commercial Block 4 launch (CRS-15) is currently scheduled for early July, leaving roughly half of all 2018's upcoming launches manifested on Block 5 Falcon 9/Heavy rockets. Falcon Heavy's second launch has in fact been pushed back by several months per The Planetary Society (http://www.planetary.org/blogs/jason-davis/2018/20180511-lightsail2-launch-slip.html), indicating that the construction of the first Block 5 center booster has taken a back seat to the more pressing concerns of Falcon 9 Block 5 boosters, upper stages, and fairings needed to avoid additional customer launch delays.

Regardless, the first successful and nearly-complete recovery of a Falcon 9 Block 5 booster marks a huge milestone for SpaceX. So long as the imminent teardown analysis does not reveal anything especially unexpected, the rocket company is quickly closing in on true rapid reuse with Octagrabber/Roomba's steady routinization of robotic rocket saving, yet another intact fairing half recovery, and the good condition of B1046 after a relatively hot reentry and landing.

DHAKA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday officially opened two ground stations for the country's first satellite code-named "Bangabandhu Satellite-1".

The ground stations are situated at Telipara in Gazipur on the outskirts of capital Dhaka and Bethbunia in southeastern Bangladesh's Rangamati district.

Hasina inaugurated the stations via video conferences with officials from Bangabandhu International Conference Centre also known as Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.

May 12 this year was a red-letter day for Bangladesh when the country ushered in a new era by launching its first "Bangabandhu-1" satellite.

The launch made Bangladesh the 57th nation in the world and fourth in South Asia after India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to own a satellite.
