Designed for direct-to-home television broadcasts and maritime relay services in Asia, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean, Koreasat 5A arrived at the Florida launch base Oct. 5 from its Thales Alenia Space manufacturing plant in Cannes, France, for final pre-flight processing and fueling.

The Falcon 9's first stage will attempt landing on SpaceX's floating barge in the Atlantic Ocean after sending Koreasat 5A toward a perch in geostationary orbit.

The Koreasat 5A and Zuma missions are slated to take off from launch pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Both flights are expected to use newly-built Falcon 9 booster stages.

Moving closer toward launch Monday with a South Korean communications satellite, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket fired its nine Merlin main engines Thursday on a launch pad in Florida in a key preflight readiness test.
Спойлер
The Merlin 1D engines fired at 12 p.m. EDT (1600 GMT) Thursday as hold-down restraints kept the two-stage Falcon 9 rocket anchored at pad 39A. Once engineers complete a data review, ground crews will roll the Falcon 9 back to its hangar to meet the Koreasat 5A communications satellite.

The rocket was moved to pad 39A fr om SpaceX's integration hangar about a quarter-mile to the south, wh ere technicians assembled the newly-built two-stage launcher. The Falcon 9 was without its payload for Thursday's hotfire test, a change in practice instituted last year after a rocket exploded minutes before a similar hold-down firing, destroying an Israeli communications satellite on-board.

Once the Falcon 9 is back in the hangar near pad 39A, workers will attach the rocket's payload shroud containing the Koreasat 5A satellite.

It will be rolled back out to pad 39A, a seaside launch complex formerly used by Saturn 5 moon rockets and the space shuttle, over the weekend for a liftoff currently scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Monday's launch window opens at 3:34 p.m. EDT (1934 GMT) and extends to 5:58 p.m. EDT (2158 GMT).

The Koreasat 5A launch will mark SpaceX's 16th mission of the year, and the 44th Falcon 9 flight overall since June 2010.

Built by Thales Alenia Space, Koreasat 5A will provide direct-to-home television broadcasting and other communications services in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, and Southeast Asia. Other coverage zones will include the Middle East and East Africa, wh ere Koreasat 5A will support maritime communications.

The Falcon 9 rocket will deploy Koreasat 5A into an elliptical, egg-shaped transfer orbit on the way to an eventual operating position in geostationary orbit 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

Owned by KTsat of South Korea, the new satellite will replace Koreasat 5 launched in 2006.

The Falcon 9's first stage will aim for landing on SpaceX's drone ship floating several hundred miles downrange in the Atlantic Ocean for recovery and reuse.

A multipurpose communications satellite owned by a South Korean telecom company is set for liftoff Monday fr om Florida's Space Coast aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 booster, and forecasters predict near-ideal conditions for a rocket launch.

The Koreasat 5A spacecraft, manufactured in Cannes, France, by Thales Alenia Space, was being attached this weekend to SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket inside the company's hangar near launch pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Спойлер
Once technicians complete final closeouts, the Falcon 9 will be rolled up the ramp to the historic launch pad via rails aboard a transporter-erector, then raised vertical ahead of Monday's countdown.

The launch window Monday opens at 3:34 p.m. EDT (1934 GMT) and extends until 5:58 p.m. EDT (2158 GMT), and the official weather forecast issued by U.S. Air Force meteorologists suggests mostly clear skies and favorable conditions are on tap for Monday afternoon.

There is less than a 10 percent chance that weather will prohibit launch. The only minor concern is with brisk northerly winds expected Monday.

Tropical Storm Philippe moved northeast off Florida's East Coast early Sunday before dissipating into a remnant low pressure system, and a cold front has also passed over the launch base, leaving fair weather in its wake.

"Monday morning will be chilly on the spaceport with temperatures dipping below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and lighter northerly winds," forecasters from the Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron wrote in an outlook released Sunday. "There is a very slight risk for the stronger winds to linger into Monday's launch window."

Conditions are launch time should be mostly sunny with a few clouds possible at 2,500 feet, good visibility, northerly winds of 15 to 20 mph, and a temperature of 69 degrees Fahrenheit.

SpaceX's launch team will oversee an automated countdown sequence Monday, beginning with power-up of the rocket and tests of telemetry connections. A poll of the team by SpaceX's launch conductor is scheduled at 2:21 p.m. EDT (1821 GMT), followed by the start of propellant loading three minutes later.

Super-chilled RP-1 kerosene and liquid oxygen will flow into both stages of the Falcon 9, along with high-pressure helium, to power and pressurize the rocket's Merlin engines. The kerosene and oxygen will be cooled close to their freezing points, increasing the fluid's density and allowing more propellants to be loaded into the rocket, a performance-raising technique introduced by SpaceX in 2015.

RP-1 will be pumped into the rocket first, followed by the start of liquid oxygen loading at around 2:59 p.m. EDT (1859 GMT).

The tanks will be topped off in the final stages of the countdown, and the first stage's nine Merlin 1D engines will be conditioned for ignition by flowing some of the cryogenic propellant through their plumbing. The computer-controlled countdown sequencer will also command a final steering check of the rocket's upper stage engine, pressurization of the Falcon 9's propellant tanks, and the retraction of the strongback support structure into position for engine start.

The first stage's Merlin 1D engines will ignite at around T-minus 3 seconds, and hold-down clamps will open when the countdown clock reaches zero, after a last-second readiness check by the Falcon 9's on-board computer.

Heading east from the Kennedy Space Center, the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 will surpass the speed of sound in about one minute and climb into the stratosphere atop 1.7 million pounds of thrust.

The first stage engines will switch off and the booster will fall away approximately two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff, then fire nitrogen cold gas thrusters in a flip maneuver to point its engines forward.

Four aerodynamic grid fins will deploy from the booster, and a subset of the first stage engines are programmed to ignite a few minutes later, combining to steer the rocket toward SpaceX's drone ship — "Of Course I Still Love You" — floating in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Cape Canaveral.

The first stage's center engine will ignite again as the rocket makes its final descent, and hydraulic actuators will extend four landing legs just before touchdown.

If all goes according to plan, the first stage will land on the recovery barge around eight minutes after liftoff, completing this booster's first trip into space and back.

While SpaceX's rocket landings have captured attention and are key to the company's strategy to reuse Falcon 9 boosters, the main goal of Monday's flight — like all of SpaceX's missions — is the deployment of its commercial payload in orbit.

That will require to firings of the second stage's single Merlin engine, first to place Koreasat 5A in a parking orbit, then to propel the spacecraft into an egg-shaped transfer orbit arcing more than 30,000 miles above Earth.

Deployment of the 4.1-ton (3.7-metric ton) spacecraft is scheduled about a half-hour into the mission, and Thales ground controllers in Europe will take control of the satellite once it contacts ground stations.

Koreasat 5A's on-board engine will conduct multiple burns to circularize its orbit around 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator a few weeks after launch. Once the satellite passes post-launch tests, Thales will hand over control of Koreasat 5A to KTsat, a subsidiary of South Korea's KT Corp. based in Seoul.

Designed for a 15-year mission, Koreasat 5A is based on Thales' Spacebus 4000B2 satellite bus and is destined to place Koreasat 5, a communications craft launched in 2006.

Koreasat 5A will be parked at 113 degrees east longitude, wh ere its orbital velocity will match the rotation of Earth, allowing the satellite to hover over a fixed location, and remain in the place in the sky in view of ground antennas.

The satellite's solar panels will generate about 6.5 kilowatts of power for its Ku-band communications transmitters and receivers. Koreasat 5A carries 36 Ku-band transponders, providing Internat access, television broadcast and other multimedia services in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

Koreasat 5A will also offer coverage for maritime communications in the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Here are some statistics for Monday's launch:
    [/li]
  • 44th Falcon 9 launch since 2010
  • 16th Falcon 9 launch this year
  • 33rd Thales Alenia Space-built satellite launched by SpaceX
  • 1st KTsat satellite launched by SpaceX
  • 106th launch from pad 39A since 1967
  • 38th Falcon 9 launch from Cape Canaveral

Critical milestones coming in the next few minutes include a poll by the SpaceX launch conductor to begin fueling the booster with super-chilled kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants.

The readiness poll is scheduled for 2:21 p.m. EDT (1821 GMT), followed by the start of RP-1 kerosene loading around three minutes later. Super-cold liquid oxygen will flow into the two-stage rocket beginning at 2:59 p.m. EDT (1859 GMT).

The Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the Koreasat 5A communications satellite into an elliptical supersynchronous transfer orbit about a half-hour after liftoff.
Спойлер
Owned by South Korea-based KTsat, the spacercaft's communications payload includes 36 Ku-band transponders to provide television, Internet and maritime services over a broad swath of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and Asia.

Today's launch will be the 44th flight of a Falcon 9 rocket since it debuted in June 2010, and the 16th Falcon 9 mission so far in 2017.

SpaceX carried out its third Falcon 9 launch of the month on Monday fr om Florida's Kennedy Space Center to deploy the KoreaSat 5A multipurpose communications satellite into a high-energy transfer orbit for South Korean operator KT Sat. Lifting off fr om Launch Complex 39A in ideal weather, Falcon 9 was headed to the south-east, dropping its first stage toward a sea-based recovery and firing the second stage twice to deliver the 3,700-Kilogram payload into a highly elliptical target orbit.

Stage 1 Post-Landing – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Monday's launch marked SpaceX's 16th mission of the year as the company continues with a steady pace, in part enabled by more customers willing to fly on previously used first stages to work around a bottleneck in production capability at the company's California manufacturing base. Also responsible for SpaceX's success in 2017 was the former Saturn V and Space Shuttle launch complex that provided the company with a trouble-free launch pad as post-launch repairs could be reduced to a minimum, permitting a dozen launches over an eight-month period.

The KoreaSat 5A launch comes right on the heels of SES 11 that departed LC-39A at sunset on October 11 to mark SpaceX's third successful booster re-use mission. In the days after, the two brand new stages for KoreaSat 5A, Booster #1042 and a Block 4 second stage, underwent assembly in the pad-side hangar before completing the standard Static Fire Test on Thursday to clear the way for a Monday liftoff.

Falcon 9 was wheeled back inside the hangar where KoreaSat 5A had arrived Thursday night, having completed production in Cannes, France followed by a trans-Atlantic trip and final processing at a SpaceX facility at the Cape. The integrated rocket rolled up the ramp again on Sunday and took its vertical launch position before sun-down in readiness for a lengthy countdown operation picking up Monday morning with the activation of the vehicle for checkouts.

With controllers on station in two Launch Control Rooms at the Cape and engineering support at SpaceX HQ in Hawthorne, Falcon 9 entered propellant loading at the T-70-minute mark after vehicle checks showed no problems and weather briefings were short as ideal conditions for a rocket launch were in place on Monday. Falcon 9 entered tanking with loading some 155 metric tons of Rocket Propellant 1 – Kerosene fuel chilled to -7°C to increase its density.

Liquid Oxygen loading picked up at T-35 minutes on the first stage and 15 minutes later on the second stage to pump around 360 metric tons of the sub-cooled oxidizer into the vehicle, aiming to achieve flight levels just two minutes before launch to prevent propellant fr om warming excessively in a bid to squeeze the maximum possible performance out of the Falcon 9 design. Pushing into the final seven countdown minutes, Falcon 9 began chilling down its nine Merlin 1D engines, aligned its flight control system, switched to battery power and pressurized its tanks for the retraction of the Strongback Structure, primed for a rapid kickback at the moment of liftoff.

Flight levels on both stages were called out at T-2 minutes and Helium loading closed out even closer to liftoff with Falcon 9 taking over control at the one-minute mark for final pressurization and arming. A final GO was voiced by the Launch Director and the stage was set for liftoff after what appeared to be a routine countdown for the most-flown launch vehicle of 2017.

The typical green flames of Falcon 9's igniter mixture emerged fr om the business end of the vehicle at T-3 seconds as the rocket's nine engines soared to a launch thrust just shy of 700 metric-ton-force. Hold-down mechanisms let go of the 70-meter tall rocket after all engines were verified to be up and running, marking a window-opening liftoff at precisely 19:34:00 UTC, 3:34 p.m. local time in Florida.

Falcon 9 balanced in a vertical posture for the first 15 seconds of flight before pitching over to begin racing away from Florida to the south-east on the standard path to Geostationary Transfer Orbit. Burning some 2,450 Kilograms of propellant per second, Falcon 9 accelerated beyond the speed of sound in just over a minute and encountered Maximum Dynamic Pressure 76 seconds into the flight, throttling back its engines momentarily to reduce stress on the ascending rocket.

The first stage switched off its engines two minutes and 33 seconds into the flight after boosting the rocket to a speed of 2,282 meters per second. Three seconds after MECO – 67 Kilometers in altitude, four pneumatic pushers sent the two stages on their separate journeys with Stage 2 heading into start-up mode to push on toward orbit and Stage 1 set for a high-energy return maneuver to aim for a propulsive landing on SpaceX's 'Of Course I Still Love You' Drone Ship.

As the seventh Falcon 9 Geotransfer Mission of the year, Monday's flight lacked the propellant reserves for flying the first stage back to Cape Canaveral and used a two- instead of a three-burn return profile – continuing on a ballistic arc after separation from the second stage until firing up for a re-entry burn.

Stage 1 Re-Entry – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Following staging, the booster used its nitrogen thrusters to re-orient to an engines-first attitude and deployed its actuated grid fins – coming into play for three-axis control when heading back into the dense atmosphere after passing a high point of 119 Kilometers.

Three Merlin 1D engines fired up in a staggered fashion six minutes and 28 seconds after launch when the booster had reached 58 Kilometers in altitude, hitting the brakes to create a survivable re-entry environment for the Block 4 booster which does not yet have a series of 'Block 5' re-usability upgrades that will allow it to tolerate even the hottest entry environments with ease. The 22-second entry burn slowed the booster by 857 meters per second to  an entry speed of 1.45 Kilometers per second.

Onboard views from the descending first stage showed the grid fins glowing bright in the hypersonic flow and ablative materials from lower on the booster deposited onto the camera before the video signal went out. Making its way through the sound barrier in reverse direction, the booster used its grid fins to maneuver toward the Drone Ship, holding position 625 Kilometers from the launch site. Firing up its center engine, the booster was in for some throttling- and gimbaling action to enter a vertical descent toward OCISLY and arrest its vertical speed just as the four fold-out landing legs made contact with the floating landing pad.

Stage 1 After Post-Landing Fires were extinguished – Photo: SpaceX

Despite some flames around the base of the rocket, a good touchdown was called out by Launch Control nine minutes after liftoff, marking SpaceX's 15th successful recovery in a row. In total, SpaceX now stands at 19 successful landings out of 24 tries, recovering 16 different boosters (three have launched & landed twice). At sea, SpaceX now stands at 12 out of 17.

While the first stage was going through its hot re-entry, Stage 2 was in to earn the money via an on-target delivery of KoreaSat 5A to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit. The 95,000-Kilogram-force MVac engine fired up just two seconds after stage separation to boost the combined second stage & KoreaSat stack into a Low Earth Parking Orbit. Falcon 9 split open and separated its two 13-meter long fairing halves three minutes and 40 seconds into the flight when crossing 115 Kilometers in altitude wh ere aerodynamic forces were no longer a factor.

The second stage fired for five minutes and 53 seconds to enter orbit, followed by nearly 18 minutes of coasting to reach a position near the equator so that the second burn could place the high point of the resulting orbit over the equator on the opposite side of the planet – standard practice for GTO missions.

Having arrived within range of African tracking stations, the second stage re-lit its engine 26 minutes and 52 seconds into the flight on a burn of 61 seconds to significantly raise the apogee and decreasing the orbit's inclination, reducing the fuel the satellite has to expend on its transition into a stationary orbit. The burn accelerated the vehicle by 2.54 Kilometers per second and Launch Controllers called out a nominal orbit based on readings from the second stage's navigation platform.

KoreaSat 5A was pushed away via loaded springs just shy of 36 minutes into flight, marking the completion of SpaceX's mission and the beginning of a 15-year mission for the satellite. KT Sat – a first-time SpaceX customer – will use KoreaSat 5A in tandem with KoreaSat 7, launched earlier this year, to create a powerful multimedia distribution platform for the Asian market.

Through a series of burns using an S400 main engine, KoreaSat 5A will reach Geostationary Orbit wh ere its velocity matches that of the Earth's rotation to allow the satellite to remain over the same location at all times – aiming for a spot at 113 degrees East wh ere it will work in close proximity to KoreaSat 7 that features a Ku/Ka-Band payload for Internet access, multimedia distribution, broadcasting and Fixed Satellite Services.

Based on Thales Alenia's Spacebus-4000B2 platform, KoreaSat 5A hosts 36 Ku-Band transponders – twenty with a 54 MHz bandwidth, twelve 36 MHz transponders and four extended Ku-Band transponders feeding steerable beams to direct capacity wh ere it is needed. The satellite is replacing KoreaSat 5 launched in 2006 and will cover five areas spanning from the Arabian Peninsula to Japan including maritime communications areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Monday's launch was the 44th overall mission for the Falcon 9 family, continuing to establish its role as an industry workhorse by flying more missions than any other launcher family in 2017 including Russia's Soyuz and China's Long March families that usually ranked at the top of the list. Checking off its 16th launch of the year, SpaceX remains on course to a goal of 20 Falcon 9 missions in 2017.

Next up is the secretive mission called 'Zuma' that showed up on the launch schedule just recently, identified through documentation SpaceX filed with the Federal Communications Commission. It has been revealed that the payload of the mission was manufactured by Northrop Grumman for operation by an unnamed U.S. Government Agency – a pattern similar to the equally secretive PAN and CLIO satellites ultimately revealed in Snowden Documents (http://spaceflight101.com/snowden-documents-reveal-mysterious-pan-satellite/) to be under direct tasking by the NSA in a program named NEMESIS.

After Zuma, Falcon 9 operations will shift from Launch Complex 39A to the repaired Space Launch Complex 40 – looking forward to its first launch since being knocked out of commission by the September 2016 explosion  (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-amos-6/)of a Falcon 9 rocket. SLC-40 will return to service with the Dragon SpX-13 mission to the International Space Station that has been cleared by NASA engineering teams to use a 'flight-proven' first stage from an earlier Dragon mission – still pending official announcement that NASA management provided clearance as well.

SpaceX's last West Coast launch of the year is currently aiming for December 22/23 to send the next batch of Iridium-NEXT communications satellites on their way – also using a flight-proven booster (http://spaceflight101.com/iridium-selects-flight-proven-falcon-9-rockets-for-upcoming-constellation-launches/). Spain's HispaSat 30W-6 communications satellite rounds out the Falcon 9 near-term manifest, though its target launch date has still to be confirmed to be within 2017.

Final preparations for the inaugural Falcon Heavy launch will swing in motion after the Zuma mission clears the pad via final outfitting work on the Transporter, Erector & Launch device as well as ground system modifications needed to support the three-core vehicle. This will be followed by integration and fit checks of the vehicle, starting inside the hangar before Falcon Heavy will make its first rollout to LC-39A for a Wet Dress Rehearsal that may culminate in a Static Fire Test, depending on the performance of the vehicle and ground system. Liftoff, still penciled in for NET Late December, is contingent on a smooth testing campaign and would otherwise move into 2018.

Heading into the home stretch of a banner year, SpaceX launched its third Falcon 9 rocket flight of the month Monday with a Korean-owned commercial communications satellite built to connect customers across a swath fr om the Middle East to East Asia.

The Falcon 9 rocket took off with the Koreasat 5A communications satellite at 3:34 p.m. EDT (1934 GMT) Monday from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, turning east as it surpassed the speed of sound and climbed into a clear autumn sky with 1.7 million pounds of thrust from its nine Merlin 1D main engines.
Спойлер
The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) launcher reached an altitude of more than 40 miles (65 kilometers) in two-and-a-half minutes, then the Falcon 9's first stage shut down and separated, leaving an upper stage engine to continue firing to propel the rocket and its payload to the velocity needed to enter orbit.

The upper stage completed its firing around eight-and-a-half minutes into the flight, just as the 15-story first stage booster made a pinpoint touchdown on SpaceX's floating drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the 19th time the company has recovered one of its rockets intact, and the 15th time in a row.

Once widely viewed as a daunting concept, the vertical, propulsive booster landings have appeared increasingly routine in recent months, and are critical for SpaceX's strategy to reuse rocket hardware and cut costs.

Live video from the drone ship showed a small fire develop around the base of the first stage after landing, but fire suppression equipment quickly doused the blaze, and the barge will return the rocket to Port Canaveral in a few days for refurbishment and potential reuse.

But SpaceX and its customers consider the rocket landings secondary to each mission's main objective: the delivery of satellites to their targeted orbits.

The Falcon 9's upper stage engine arrived in a preliminary parking orbit after its first burn, then reignited at about T+plus 27 minutes to send the Koreasat 5A satellite into a high-altitude geostationary transfer orbit expected to range more than 22,000 miles (35,000 kilometers) above Earth.

SpaceX reported an on-target deployment of Koreasat 5A just shy of the mission's 36-minute point, and an on-board camera showed the satellite receding into the blackness of space as it soared several hundred miles over Africa.

The successful release of Koreasat 5A concluded SpaceX's 44th Falcon 9 mission, and the 16th this year.

Engineers at Thales Alenia Space, which built the Koreasat 5A satellite in Cannes, France, received the first signals from the 4.1-ton (3.7-metric ton) spacecraft via a remote ground station shortly after separation from the Falcon 9 rocket. Officials confirmed the satellite was healthy following the launch.

Koreasat 5A's on-board engine will conduct multiple burns to circularize its orbit around 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator a few weeks after launch. Once the satellite passes post-launch tests and deploys its solar panels and antennas, Thales will hand over control of Koreasat 5A to KTsat, a subsidiary of South Korea's KT Corp. based in Seoul.

Designed for a 15-year mission, Koreasat 5A is based on Thales' Spacebus 4000B2 satellite bus and is destined to place Koreasat 5, a communications craft launched in 2006.

Koreasat 5 was crippled by a failure of a solar array drive mechanism, prompting KTsat to order a replacement sooner than expected.

Koreasat 5A carries 36 Ku-band transponders, providing Internet access, television broadcast and other multimedia services in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

Koreasat 5A will also offer coverage for maritime communications in the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the East China Sea.

Look at those Merlin Engines. Each engine produces 190,000 pounds of thrust at launch.
