Ariane Flight 239 - Start of the campaign

Vol Ariane 239 – Assemblage du lanceur

Après le hissage de l'Etage Principal Cryotechnique (EPC) sur la table de lancement mobile, on installe le composite supérieur au sommet. Il comprend notamment la case à équipements, le cerveau d'Ariane 5, avec l'ordinateur de bord et le système de contrôle et de guidage. Cette opération a lieu dans le Bâtiment d'Intégration Lanceur (BIL). Après intégration des étages, et des EAP (boosters), l'ensemble est contrôlé puis sera tracté sur une double voie ferrée vers le Bâtiment d'Assemblage Final (BAF).

It includes the equipment box, the brain of Ariane 5, with the on-board computer and the control and guidance system. This is done in the Launcher Integration Building (BIL). After integration of the floors, and EAPs (boosters), the assembly is checked and then pulled on a double track to the Final Assembly Building (BAF).

Flight VA239: Launcher and payload preparations advance for Arianespace's next Ariane 5 liftoff

The Ariane 5 for Flight VA239 rides atop a mobile launch table during its transfer from the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building to the Final Assembly Building.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's ninth flight in 2017 is being readied for a September 5 liftoff from the Spaceport, while its two satellite passengers – Intelsat's Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a for SSL on behalf of Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) – continue their final checkout at the French Guiana facility.

Following its build-up in the Launcher Integration Building, the Ariane 5 has been moved to the Final Assembly Building for the upcoming installation of Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a – which are now undergoing their own checkout processes in separate halls of the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility.

The upcoming mission to geostationary transfer orbit is designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's numbering system, and will mark the 239th launch of an Ariane vehicle since the European launcher series entered service in 1979. The heavy-lift Ariane 5 is operated as part of Arianespace's launcher family at the Spaceport, which also includes the medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

An "Epic" launch at the service of Intelsat

Built by Boeing using a 702MP spacecraft platform, Intelsat 37e is the next satellite in Intelsat's high-throughput EpicNG series for launch.

Preparations for Flight VA239's two satellite passengers included the fit-check of Intelsat 37e with its payload adapter (at left), and fueling of BSAT-4a (photo at right).

It also will be the fourth EpicNG spacecraft orbited by Arianespace to date (following Ariane 5 missions with Intelsat 29e and Intelsat 33e in January and August 2016, respectively, plus last February's heavy-lift flight that lofted SKY Brasil-1/Intelsat 32e).

Operating in the C, Ku and Ka frequency bands, the spacecraft will provide capacity for wireless backhaul, enterprise VSAT and mobility networks. Intelsat 37e, which is to carry out its mission from a 342-deg. East orbital slot, will weigh approximately 6,440 kg. at liftoff.

Continuing a long and fruitful partnership

Arianespace is launching Flight VA239's co-passenger, BSAT-4a, as part of a turnkey contract between B-SAT and U.S.-based satellite manufacturer SSL. To be operated from an orbital position of 110 deg. East, this spacecraft will be used for Direct-To-Home (DTH) television relay in Japan and to expand the availability of advanced television services – such as 4K/8K ultra-high definition TV.

BSAT-4a is based on the SSL 1300 satellite platform and is fitted with 24 Ku-band transponders. It will weigh approximately 3,520 kg. at liftoff, with a design life that exceeds 15 years.

Arianespace has a 30-year-plus track record serving operators in the Japanese market – including B-SAT, for which it is the launch services provider of choice.

Flight VA239 will continue Arianespace's busy schedule in 2017, in which eight launches were performed during the year's first seven months, utilizing the company's full launcher family (two with Vega; two with Soyuz; and four using Ariane 5).

Installé dans un conteneur de transport, il est transféré depuis le bâtiment S5B, jusqu'au hall d'encapsulation du bâtiment d'assemblage final pour poursuivre sa préparation. For its ninth launch of the year, and the fifth Ariane 5 mission in 2017 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, Arianespace will orbit Intelsat 37e for the operator Intelsat and BSAT-4a for the manufacturer SSL (Space Systems Loral) in the framework of a turnkey contract for the Japanese operator Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT).
                        
With this 292th mission performed by its family of launchers, and the 239th utilizing an Ariane family launch vehicle – Arianespace is at the service of the latest innovation in space telecommunications.
The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, September 1, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Intelsat 37e is 59e Intelsat's satellite to be launched by Arianespace since the successful orbiting of Intelsat 507 in October 1983. It also is the fifth broadband infrastructure satellite in the Intelsat EpicNG series and the fourth EpicNG spacecraft orbited by Arianespace to date, a sign of Intelsat's great confidence in Arianespace launch services.

Intelsat 37e represents a significant evolution of the award-winning EpicNG platform, incorporating enhanced power sharing technology, which enables the assignment of power between shaped, fixed and steerable spot Ku-band and Ka-band beams. This allows optimized services to meet the requirements of in-demand applications – by region – and the delivery of higher transmission efficiency for mobility and government customers in the Americas, Africa and Europe.

Intelsat 37e is the first satellite to offer interconnectivity between three different bands. This next-generation spacecraft delivers high-performance service in C-, Ku- and Ka-bands for use in wireless backhaul, enterprise VSAT and mobility networks.

Built by Boeing based on its 702MP platform, Intelsat 37e will be the 55th satellite made by this manufacturer to be launched by Arianespace.

The BSAT-4a satellite, designed and built for B-SAT, a leading broadcasting satellite operator in Japan, will be used for Direct-to-Home (DTH) television service across the Japanese archipelago. BSAT-4a is the 9th satellite to be launched by Arianespace for B-SAT, and is being orbited as part of a turnkey contract between B-SAT and the U.S.-based satellite manufacturer SSL.

The BSAT-4a satellite has 24 Ku-band transponders and will expand the availability of advanced television services such as high definition and 4K/8K ultra-high definition.

The satellite is based on the highly-reliable SSL 1300 platform, which provides the flexibility to support a broad range of applications and technological advances. BSAT-4a will be the 64nd SSL-built satellite made by this manufacturer to be launched by Arianespace.

Ariane 5 is completed for its dual-payload mission on September 5

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's ninth mission of 2017 is now fully assembled following integration of its two satellite passengers at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

During activity in Ariane 5's Final Assembly Building, the upper payload component – containing Intelsat 37e, mounted on its SYLDA dispenser system and protected by an ogive-shaped fairing – was lowered into position over BSAT-4a, which previously was installed atop the launcher's central core.

This step clears the way for final checkout, which will enable the launch readiness review to be conducted on September 1, followed by Ariane 5's rollout to the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone the following Monday, and an evening liftoff on Tuesday, September 5.

The upcoming mission is designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's numbering system, and it will deliver the two telecommunications payloads into geostationary transfer orbit.

Telecommunications satellites from long-time customers

To be deployed first during the 47-minute flight sequence is Intelsat 37e – the next satellite in Intelsat's high-throughput EpicNG series for launch, which was built by Boeing using a 702MP spacecraft platform. This spacecraft will operate in C, Ku and Ka frequency bands, providing capacity for wireless backhaul, enterprise VSAT and mobility networks from a 342-deg. East orbital slot. Intelsat 37e has an estimated liftoff mass of 6,438 kg.

Ariane 5's second passenger – BSAT-4a, which is being launched as part of a turnkey contract between Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) and U.S.-based satellite manufacturer SSL – will be operated from an orbital position of 110 deg. East. It will be used for Direct-To-Home (DTH) television relay in Japan, as well as to expand the availability of advanced television services (such as 4K/8K ultra-high definition TV). BSAT-4a will weight approximately 3,520 kg. at liftoff.

Flight VA239 will continue Arianespace's busy schedule in 2017, in which eight launches were performed during the year's first seven months, utilizing the company's full launcher family (two with Vega; two with Soyuz; and four using Ariane 5).

Intelsat S.A. (NYSE:I), operator of the world's first Globalized Network and leader in integrated satellite communications is preparing for the launch of Intelsat 37e, the fifth in their next-generation of high throughput satellites. The high performance satellite will be launched by Arianespace on an Ariane 5 launch vehicle on September 5, 2017 at 5:51 pm EDT at the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

Manufactured by Boeing, the all-digital Intelsat 37e payload represents a significant evolution of the award-winning Intelsat EpicNG platform.  The satellite features full beam interconnectivity in the C, Ku- and Ka-bands, and also includes enhanced power sharing technology and steerable beams in Ku- and Ka-band.  These features combine to bring additional flexibility to address regional and application requirements for broadband, mobility and government customers in the Americas, Africa and Europe. Intelsat 37e will be placed into service at 342° East where it replaces Intelsat 901, which will be repositioned to another location in Intelsat's Globalized Network.

Ariane 5 is cleared for launch on Arianespace's upcoming heavy-lift mission from French Guiana

Arianespace's fifth Ariane 5 mission of 2017 has been given the "green light" for liftoff on September 5 following today's successful launch readiness review, which was conducted at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

This milestone – held prior to each Arianespace flight – confirmed that the heavy-lift vehicle and its dual-satellite payload of Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a are ready for launch, as well as the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

With approval granted, Ariane 5 is cleared for its September 4 rollout from the Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone. Liftoff will occur the following day during a 33-minute launch window that opens at 6:51 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

A heavy-lift delivery for Arianespace's Ariane 5

Total payload lift performance for next week's liftoff is approximately 10,838 kg., with the Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a satellites being deployed to geostationary transfer orbit during a flight lasting 47 minutes. The mission is designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, signifying the 239th with an Ariane family vehicle.

Positioned in Ariane 5's upper passenger position and encapsulated by the launcher's ogive-shaped payload fairing, Intelsat 37e – produced by Boeing – is the next satellite in Intelsat's high-throughput EpicNG series for launch.

Arianespace has delivered another Ariane 5 to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, positioning the heavy-lift vehicle for its September 5 flight with two telecommunications satellites: Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, Ariane 5 was transferred to the ELA-3 launch zone fr om the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere its two passengers had been integrated as part of pre-flight preparations.

For this 239th launch of an Ariane-series vehicle – designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's numbering system – the payload lift performance to geostationary transfer orbit is an estimated 10,838 kg. The total factors in the mass of Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a, plus the launch vehicle's dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

Intelsat 37e is riding as the upper passenger in Ariane 5's payload arrangement, to be released 29 minutes into tomorrow's mission. The spacecraft, with a liftoff mass estimated at 6,438 kg., was built for Intelsat by Boeing using a 702MP platform, and will operate from an orbital position of 342 deg. East.

BSAT-4a – whose launch is part of a turnkey contract between Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) and U.S.-based manufacturer SSL – will be deployed from Ariane 5's lower passenger position. Based on the SSL 1300 platform, this satellite's separation will occur 47 minutes after liftoff – completing Arianespace's September 5 mission. BSAT-4a has an estimated liftoff mass of 3,520 kg. and will operate from a 110 deg. East orbital slot.

Tuesday's mission follows up on four dual-satellite deliveries by Arianespace in 2017 in addition to a pair of Soyuz launches fr om the South American space center as well as two Vega missions. The VA239 mission is the last Ariane 5 flight to Geostationary Transfer Orbit planned this year with one more flight lined up for December using the Ariane 5 ES/Galileo variant to dispatch a group of four Galileo navigation satellites into Medium Earth Orbit. Additionally, Vega is set for its third flight of the year in November with an Earth-imaging satellite for Morocco.

Tuesday's Ariane 5 mission is carrying the 6,438-Kilogram Intelsat 37e satellite in the upper payload slot while the lighter, 3,520kg BSat-4a rides in the lower payload berth for separation 47 minutes and 15 seconds after liftoff.

The Boeing-built Intelsat 37e will join Intelsat's satellite fleet as the fifth in the company's Epic-NG satellite series designed to deliver flexible communications on a global scale through the use of the latest advances in satellite technology including multi-band communications packages, frequency re-use and different beam widths to cater to services needing focused coverage for data-intensive applications and large-coverage area broadcasting services.

Intelsat 37e hosts a tri-band communications payload with ninety 36-MHz-equivalent transponders in C-Band covering Europe, Africa, the Atlantic, South America and the Eastern U.S./Canada; 275 36-MHz equivalent Ku-Band transponders create 56 fixed Ku-Band beams over Europe, Africa and South America as well as portions of the Eastern U.S. plus a focused Ku-Band beam over Algeria and a steerable Ku-Band beam to direct additional coverage wh ere it is needed; a single Ka-Band spot beam offers high throughput services with a total data throughput of 45Gbit/s across the satellite.

As the fifth in the Epic-NG constellation, Intelsat 37e is the first in the series to use advanced power-sharing capabilities and interconnectivity between all its communication bands. The satellite will operate for at least 15 years, replacing the 16-year old Intelsat 901 satellite at a position of 18°W over the Atlantic Ocean.

BSat-4a, built by Space Systems/Loral for operation by the Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation, is an all-Ku-Band satellite for the sole purpose of Direct-to-Home television distribution to Japan and the Asia-Pacific Region.

Based on the popular SSL-1300 platform, BSat-4a will spiral up into a position at 110° East wh ere it will provide expansion and replacement coverage, eventually taking over from B-SAT's first third generation satellite that launched in 2007.

BSat-4a hosts 24 Ku-Band transponders for Direct-to-Home broadcasting in standard and high definition as well as 4K Ultra-HD and the advanced 8K resolution. The satellite was commissioned for a 2017 liftoff to provide the maximum margin between its liftoff and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that are expected to the broadcast by the satellite in 4K and 8K resolution with B-SAT acquiring the necessary licenses for 4K/8K broadcasting in late 2015.

Preparations for this latest Ariane 5 launch campaign began in the second half of July when the MN Toucan, one of two sea-going vessels operated by Arianespace, arrived in French Guiana with the components of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Stacking of the vehicle was also in progress in July, starting with the installation of the 30.5-meter tall EPC Cryo Core on one of two operational launch tables followed by the attachment of the twin Solid Rocket Boosters that were assembled at a separate facility at the space base. Next was the installation of the ESC-A second stage, already integrated with the Vehicle Equipment Bay.

The two satellites arrived in Kourou in the first week of August to undergo the standard pre-launch processing flow comprising a series of stand-alone tests and fit checks before the two passengers were loaded with propellants for their trip into Geostationary Orbit and stationkeeping over their 15-year service life.

Combined with the adapters and the Sylda dual-payload dispenser, the two satellites create a total payload upmass of 10,838 Kilograms – a close second to Ariane 5's heaviest GTO delivery earlier this year with a payload of 10,865 Kilograms. The two satellites took their positions on the Ariane 5 by August 29 with the 7.9-meter tall Intelsat 37e sitting atop the Sylda and BSat-4a, standing 5.1m tall, fastened to the launcher's second stage and riding underneath the Sylda structure.

Ariane 5 received its launch clearance on September 1st via a clean Launch Readiness Review and final arming was completed over the weekend and on Monday. The 55-meter tall launcher emerged from its Final Assembly Building on Tuesday and was set down on the ELA-3 launch pad for final close outs and charging of the rocket's Helium pressurization system before entering an 11-hour and 23-minute countdown at 10:18 UTC on Tuesday with power-up of the launch vehicle expected at 10:58 UTC for an extensive checkout campaign.

Propellant loading is initiated five hours prior to T-0 with the chilldown of transfer lines and propellant tanks before supercold Liquid Oxygen stored at -183°C and Liquid Hydrogen at -253°C are pumped into the two stages of the rocket. The 5.4-meter diameter first stage will enter propellant loading first at T-4 hours and 38 minutes followed 70 minutes later by the second stage. Loading of the rocket with 184 metric tons of propellant will take approximately two hours and tanks will be kept at flight level throughout the rest of the countdown.

A repetition of telemetry checks occurs inside L-90 minutes ahead of the final set of preparatory steps to get Ariane 5 and all ground systems ready for the seven-minute Synchronized Sequence. Switching into fully computer-controlled mode, Ariane 5 will check off its final countdown milestones – notably the pressurization of tanks, the transfer to internal power, pyrotechnics activation and the handoff to Ariane's computers four seconds before ignition.

When clocks hit zero, the Vulcain 2 engine will ignite to soar to a launch thrust of 960 Kilonewtons with seven seconds of engine monitoring before the twin Solid Rocket Boosters are ignited – marking the point of no return.

Upon ignition of the boosters, Ariane 5 will jump off its launch pad with a thrust of 1,420 metric ton force – balancing in a vertical posture for less than ten seconds before initiating its pitch and roll programs to align itself with a due easterly departure path for a quick flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

The EAP boosters will deliver over 90% of the vehicle's total thrust, each burning through 237 metric tons of propellant to help accelerate Ariane 5 to a speed approaching two Kilometers per second. Ariane 5 will push through the speed of sound just 49 seconds into the flight and experience maximum dynamic pressure just after passing the T+1-minute mark.

The twin boosters will separate from the still-firing core stage at T+2 minutes and 22 seconds, using a pyrotechnic separation system to drop away from the rocket, headed toward a crash landing in the Ocean. With the boosters gone, it will be up to the Vulcain 2 engine to continue pushing Ariane 5 towards orbit with a vacuum thrust of 136 metric ton-force.

The protective payload fairing will be jettisoned three minutes and 23 seconds into the flight when Ariane 5 will have departed the discernible atmosphere. Shutdown of the core is expected at T+8 minutes and 56 seconds with separation of the spent rocket stage seven seconds later to clear the way for the critical second stage burn. Ignition of the HM-7B engine will come four seconds after staging on a burn of 16 minutes and 25 seconds to push the stack into a highly elliptical orbit with a thrust of over six metric tons.

The VA239 mission is targeting an orbit of 250 by 35,706 Kilometers, inclined 6.0 degrees with the upper stage aiming for an injection speed of 9.4 Kilometers per second. Powered flight will end at T+25 minutes and 31 seconds, marking the start of the complex ballistic phase to prepare for the separation of the satellites.

Intelsat 37e will depart the Ariane 5 rocket 29 minutes and 50 seconds into the mission with the second stage swiftly swinging around to set up for the jettisoning of the Sylda adapter just two minutes later. BSat-4 – riding shotgun on Tuesday – will remain attached for another 15 minutes while the second stage maneuvers into the proper position for the release of the smaller of the two passengers at just over T+47 minutes to conclude the 95th flight of the Ariane 5 rocket.

A European Ariane 5 rocket is set for liftoff from French Guiana at 2151 GMT (5:51 p.m. EDT) Tuesday with communications satellites for Intelsat and Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. of Japan.

The two-stage rocket, boosted by a pair of strap-on solid rocket motors, rolled out of its hangar Monday at the Guiana Space Center on the northeastern coast of South America for the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey to the ELA-3 launch zone.

The nearly 180-foot-tall (55-meter) Ariane 5 and its mobile launch table were connected to the pad's propellant, electrical and telemetry systems Monday evening in advance of the start of the final countdown this morning.

Two U.S.-built satellites are bolted on top of the Ariane 5 rocket.

The larger of the two, Intelsat 37e, is riding in the upper position in the dual-payload stack. Built on the Boeing 702 satellite bus, the 14,193-pound (6,438-kilogram) spacecraft will provide high-throughout communications services over the Americas, Europe and the Middle East for a 15-year mission.

Intelsat 37e will support television, broadband, wireless communications and government services from a perch in geostationary orbit at 18 degrees west longitude.

The BSAT 4a communications satellite, manufactured by Space Systems/Loral, will provide high-definition and 4K and 8K Ultra HD television broadcast coverage over Japan. The 7,760-pound (3,520-kilogram) satellite will be positioned in geostationary orbit over the equator at 110 degrees east longitude.

The final countdown commenced at 1028 GMT (6:28 a.m. EDT), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2151 GMT (5:51 p.m. EDT; 6:51 p.m. French Guiana time). Tuesday's launch window extends until 2224 GMT (6:24 p.m. EDT; 7:24 p.m. French Guiana time).

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 began around 1118 GMT (7:18 a.m. EDT).

Workers were expected to put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling.
The flight program for Wednesday's launch will be loaded into the rocket's computer.

The launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1613 GMT (12:13 p.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It will take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage will commence at 1723 GMT (1:23 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will occur at 1733 GMT (1:33 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 2036 GMT (4:36 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison 2 minutes, 22 seconds, after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 56 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,706 kilometers (22,186 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 6 degrees.

The release of Intelsat 37e is scheduled for 29 minutes, 50 seconds, after liftoff. The rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned a few minutes later.

BSAT 4a will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 47 minutes, 15 seconds.

T-minus 3 hours, 10 minutes. The Ariane 5 rocket's first stage, known by the French acronym EPC, is currently being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The second stage, or ESC-A, should also be receiving the same mix of liquid propellants. The first stage Vulcain 2 engine and the upper stage HM7B engine both consume the super-cold fuel.

The cryogenic propellant will be gradually pumped inside the rocket to maintain proper levels as the fuel evaporates over the rest of the countdown.

The Ariane 5's supply of cryogenic liquid helium, used to pressurize the rocket's propellant tanks, was loaded aboard the launcher Tuesday.

During the last few minutes, the Synchronized Sequence has been prepped for activation. This computer-run sequence assumes control of the countdown at the Minus-7 minute mark to perform the final tasks to place the rocket and pad systems in launch configuration.

At Minus-4 seconds, the rocket's onboard computer will take over control of main engine start, health checks of the powerplant and solid rocket booster ignition commanding for liftoff.

Anomaly causes interruption of the countdown for Arianespace Flight VA239

During the final seconds of the launch countdown for Arianespace Flight VA239, the checkout process detected an anomaly on the launcher as the Vulcain cryogenic main stage engine was being ignited. As a result, the final countdown was interrupted.

The Ariane 5 and its Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a payloads immediately switched to a safe mode. Analysis of data is underway to determine the cause of the anomaly. In parallel, the launcher will be transferred back to the Final Assembly Building at the Spaceport in French Guiana – where it is to be returned to a flight-ready condition.

Arianespace will set a new launch date as soon as possible.

Europe's Ariane 5 workhorse launcher suffered a very rare on-pad abort on Tuesday when aiming for a sunset liftoff fr om French Guiana with a particularly heavy pair of communications satellites for operators Intelsat and B-SAT. Ignition of the main engine occurred as scheduled, but the launcher's computers commanded a shutdown of the engine prior to booster ignition due to an anomalous condition.

Arianespace said there was no danger to the launch vehicle and its payloads and evaluations into the circumstances of the aborted ignition were underway before determining a new launch date. The launcher will be returned to the Final Assembly Building to undergo re-attachment of umbilicals separated before launch and any repairs necessary to return the vehicle to flight readiness for its second launch attempt.

Hidden under Ariane 5 L5100's payload fairing is Intelsat 37e, riding in the front seat, and BSat-4a, fastened to the rocket's second stage and hidden under the Sylda adapter that allows Ariane 5 to lift a pair of satellites in a stacked configuration. The two passengers and their adapter systems create a total payload upmass of 10,838 Kilograms, making this the second heaviest Ariane 5 mission to Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

Lifting two GEO satellites at once has become Ariane's bread and butter business and Tuesday's launch was expected to be no different. The 55-meter tall rocket was rolled to the ELA-3 launch pad at the Guiana Space Center on Monday and entered countdown operations on Tuesday at 10:28 UTC, gearing up for the opening of a 33-minute launch window at 21:51 UTC, 6:51 p.m. local time or just 15 minutes after sunset and perfectly clear skies expected for the opportunity.

Ariane 5 went into power up operations after 11 UTC and completed an extensive series of tests before heading into propellant loading to receive 184 metric tons of supercold Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen. Propellants were kept topped up at flight level throughout the countdown and the colorful sunset provided a fitting backdrop to the launch vehicle as it entered a final computer-controlled countdown sequence at T-7 minutes to transition to an autonomous configuration.

No issues arose during the automated countdown sequence and Ariane 5 went through pressurization of its tanks, transitioned to internal power and switched control fr om ground computers to its own flight computers. The Cryogenic Feed Arms retracted from the second stage at T-5 seconds and the trusted Vulcain 2 main engine fired up when clocks hit zero at 21:51:00 UTC with seven seconds of thrust build-up and engine monitoring planned before ignition of the twin EAP Boosters – the point of no-return.

However, the flight computer refused the ignition of the boosters due to an anomalous condition – likely related to the operation of the engine – and commanded the orderly shutdown of the Vulcain 2 engine with flameout occurring around 12 seconds after H-0. The Launch Team immediately went into safing steps to back out of the countdown and put the vehicle on external power and vent down the tanks before diving into data reviews to understand what caused the ignition abort.

The most recent post-ignition abort suffered by the Ariane 5 was in 2011 on the VA201 mission which coincidentally also carried an Intelsat spacecraft, Intelsat New Dawn in that case along with Yahsat-1A. VA201 was aborted due to a failed engine gimbal check and was delayed by 23 days to facilitate the rocket's rollback, inspections, corrective action and rollout. The fastest possible timeline for rollback & re-rollout would be around five days.

Due to Ariane 5's design, a number of irreversible events occur in the final countdown seconds beginning with the retraction of the two cryogenic feed arms for the upper stage. These will have to be reconnected at the Final Assembly Building and the Vulcain 2 engine will require some servicing steps including the replacement of igniter charges.

"We had an aborted launch," said Arianespace's executive vice president of missions Luce Fabreguettes. "Everything is fine – the launcher, the satellites are OK. We will be analyzing the problem to be able to launch again as soon as possible. I would, of course, like to apologize to our customers for this delay. ... We will return to flight very soon, and we will be launching again as soon as possible."

Spacecraft operator Intelsat confirmed the company's satellite was safe after Tuesday's abort.

The VA239 mission is carrying the 6,438-Kilogram Intelsat 37e satellite in the upper payload slot while the lighter, 3,520kg BSat-4a rides in the lower payload berth for separation 47 minutes after liftoff.

The Boeing-built Intelsat 37e will join Intelsat's satellite fleet as the fifth in the company's Epic-NG satellite series designed to deliver flexible communications on a global scale through the use of the latest advances in satellite technology. Intelsat 37e hosts a tri-band communications payload with ninety 36-MHz-equivalent transponders in C-Band covering Europe, Africa, the Atlantic, South America and the Eastern U.S./Canada; 275 36-MHz equivalent Ku-Band transponders create 56 fixed Ku-Band beams over Europe, Africa and South America as well as portions of the Eastern U.S. plus a focused Ku-Band beam over Algeria and a steerable Ku-Band beam to direct additional coverage wh ere it is needed; a single Ka-Band spot beam offers high throughput services with a total data throughput of 45Gbit/s across the satellite.

As the fifth in the Epic-NG constellation, Intelsat 37e is the first in the series to use advanced power-sharing capabilities and interconnectivity between all its communication bands. The satellite will operate for at least 15 years, replacing the 16-year old Intelsat 901 satellite at a position of 18°W over the Atlantic Ocean.

BSat-4a, built by Space Systems/Loral for operation by the Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation, is an all-Ku-Band satellite for the sole purpose of Direct-to-Home television distribution to Japan and the Asia-Pacific Region.

Based on the popular SSL-1300 platform, BSat-4a will spiral up into a position at 110° East wh ere it will provide expansion and replacement coverage, eventually taking over from B-SAT's first third generation satellite that launched in 2007.

BSat-4a hosts 24 Ku-Band transponders for Direct-to-Home broadcasting in standard and high definition as well as 4K Ultra-HD and the advanced 8K resolution. The satellite was commissioned for a 2017 liftoff to provide the maximum margin between its liftoff and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics that are expected to the broadcast by the satellite in 4K and 8K resolution.

An Ariane 5 countdown in French Guiana was aborted Tuesday with the European-made rocket's main engine already running, postponing the launch of two commercial communications satellites until engineers can resolve the problem.

The rare last-second abort came at 2151 GMT (5:51 p.m. EDT; 6:51 p.m. French Guiana time) Tuesday as the Ariane 5's Vulcain 2 main engine, a cryogenic powerplant consuming super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, throttled up to full power.

Seven seconds were supposed to elapse before ignition of the Ariane 5's two powerful side-mounted solid rocket boosters, an irreversible command that would have propelled the rocket airborne.

A computer-run health check into the readiness of the Vulcain 2 engine apparently turned up a problem, and the countdown was halted before the strap-on boosters fired.

It was the first time since March 2011 an Ariane 5 countdown was aborted after main engine start. On that mission, engineers replaced suspect actuators inside the Vulcain 2 engine and successfully launched the Ariane 5 rocket around three weeks later.

Didier Faivre, director of the Guiana Space Center for CNES, the French space agency, said the abort was triggered by the Ariane 5's computers.

"There was a problem with the Vulcain engine, and we proceeded with an automatic stop of the launcher," Faivre said. "There is no danger on the base either for people or infrastructure."

The Ariane 5 launcher and the Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a communications satellites inside its payload shroud were reported safe after the abort by Luce Fabreguettes, Arianespace's executive vice president of missions, operations and purchasing.

"We had an aborted launch," she said. "Everything is fine. The launcher, the satellites are OK. We will be analyzing the problem to be able to launch again as soon as possible. I would, of course, like to apologize to our customers for this delay."

Arianespace was gearing up for its ninth launch of the year, and the fifth using the Ariane 5 heavy-lifter.

"Data analysis is underway to determine the cause of the anomaly," Arianespace said in a statement. "In parallel, the launcher will be transferred to the Final Assembly Building — wh ere it will be returned to a flight-ready condition."

The Ariane 5 will return to its assembly building, a cavernous structure 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) from the launch pad, for ground crews to reconnect umbilical lines between the rocket and its mobile platform. The umbilicals disconnected as planned in the final 10 seconds of the countdown, and they must be reinstalled manually.

The Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a satellites will likely remain aboard the rocket during any repairs deemed necessary.

The 14,193-pound Intelsat 37e satellite, occupying the upper position in the Ariane 5's dual-payload stack, will beam broadband, wireless communications, television and government services across the Americas, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe and the Middle East from a perch in geostationary orbit at 18 degrees west longitude. Made by Boeing in El Segundo, California, Intelsat 37e is the fifth Epic-series satellite launched for Intelsat.

BSAT 4a will provide HD, 4K and 8K Ultra HD television broadcasts over Japan for Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. The satellite was built by Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, California, and carries 24 Ku-band transponders.

Interruption of the VA239 countdown: results of preliminary analysis

Just after the ignition of Ariane 5's main stage Vulcain engine, the on-board computer detected an anomaly affecting electrical equipment on one of the two solid-propellant boosters (EAP). This anomaly led to an interruption of the automated lift-off sequence.

This interruption is perfectly compliant with our procedures which authorize a launch only if 100% of launcher equipment is fully operational. This rule guarantees the reliability and robustness of our launch system.

An analysis started immediately after the countdown interruption. It will continue to identify the anomaly's cause and determine the measures to be taken in order to resume launch operations as soon as possible.

As the analysis is underway, Ariane 5 will be transferred to the Final Assembly Building (BAF) on Thursday, September 7, once the tanks have been purged. The two satellites, Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a, are safe under the fairing atop the launcher.

As soon as the analysis of the anomaly has been completed, Arianespace will announce a new launch date. The objective is to launch around the end of September 2017.
This postponement does not affect the other launches scheduled for the end of 2017.

Tuesday's launch was halted seconds before liftoff, with the Ariane 5's Vulcain 2 main engine already burning. A computer-run health check of the engine and other launcher systems turned up an anomaly affecting electrical equipment on one of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters, Arianespace said.

"This interruption is perfectly compliant with our procedures which authorize a launch only if 100 percent of launcher equipment is fully operational," Arianespace said in a statement. "This rule guarantees the reliability and robustness of our launch system."

The launch team safed and secured the Ariane 5 rocket and its two satellite payloads — the Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a communications spacecraft — in the aftermath of the last-second abort.

"An analysis started immediately after the countdown interruption," Arianespace said. "It will continue to identify the anomaly's cause and determine the measures to be taken in order to resume launch operations as soon as possible."

Ground crews removed the Ariane 5 rocket Thursday from its launch pad at the Guiana Space Center, a French-run spaceport in French Guiana. A diesel-powered tug towed the rocket and its mobile launch platform back to the spaceport's final assembly building along 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) of rail tracks.
"As soon as the analysis of the anomaly has been completed, Arianespace will announce a new launch date," the French launch operator said in a statement. "The objective is to launch around the end of September 2017."

Along with making repairs to the solid rocket booster's electrical system, technicians will reconnect two umbilical arms to the Ariane 5's upper stage. The connectors feed cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants to the second stage tanks, but they retracted as planned during the final seconds of the countdown.

The umbilical arms require manual reconnection to the launcher.

The launch team depressurized the rocket's tanks after Tuesday's scrub, then drained propellants before rollback to the Ariane 5 hangar. The rocket has special propellant drainage lines from the upper stage that are designed for use in the event of an aborted countdown.

The Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a satellites are expected to remain aboard the rocket until the next launch attempt.

One more Ariane 5 launch this year is slated for Dec. 12 at 1836:07 GMT (1:36:07 p.m. EST) with four European Galileo navigation satellites.

Arianespace Flight VA239: new launch date announced

During the original synchronized sequence of the final countdown, on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, an anomaly was observed with an electrical equipment in one of the Ariane 5 launcher's two solid-propellants boosters (EAP).

After identifying and replacing the electrical equipment, and having undertaken all the related checks, Arianespace has decided to resume the operations leading to the final countdown for Flight VA239.
This mission's liftoff is now planned on Friday, September 29, 2017 as early as possible within the following launch window:

Designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's mission numbering system for its launcher family, the liftoff originally had been set for September 5, but was delayed after the countdown was stopped. An anomaly was detected with an electrical component in one of the Ariane 5 launcher's two solid boosters, which subsequently was replaced – allowing the launch vehicle's return to flight status.

The Ariane 5 for tomorrow's Arianespace flight with a pair of telecommunications satellites has moved to the launch zone at the Spaceport in French Guiana, positioning it for an evening liftoff to geostationary transfer orbit with the Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a payloads.

For this ninth Arianespace mission of 2017, the Ariane 5's rollout occurred today – with the vehicle riding atop one of two operational launch tables for its return to the pad. Tomorrow's mission is designated Flight VA239 in Arianespace's numbering system for its launcher family, and will deliver a total payload lift performance of approximately 10,840 kg.

To be released first during the 47-minute mission will be Intelsat 37e – becoming the fourth EpicNG spacecraft orbited by Arianespace for Intelsat. This Boeing-built spacecraft, based on the 702MP platform, is the first to offer interconnectivity between three different bands. It is designed to deliver high-performance service in C-, Ku- and Ka-bands for use in wireless backhaul, enterprise VSAT and mobility networks.

Flight VA239's BSAT-4a passenger will be launched by Arianespace for satellite manufacturer Space Systems Loral in the framework of a turnkey contract with Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT). To be utilized for Direct-to-Home (DTH) television service in Japan, BSAT-4a is based on Space Systems Loral's SSL 1300 platform. The relay platform is equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders and will expand the availability of advanced television services such as high definition and 4K/8K ultra-high definition.

Galileo satellites are readied for Flight VA240 in December

In other activity at the Spaceport, the first two satellites for Arianespace's Flight VA240 with Ariane 5 have begun their checkout. Targeted for a liftoff on December 12 carrying a quartet of Galileo navigation spacecraft, this mission will be performed on behalf of the European Commission under a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Arianespace already has launched 18 Galileo spacecraft, with four being deployed into medium Earth orbits on a previous Ariane 5 mission (Flight VA233 in November 2016), and the others lofted by seven medium-lift Soyuz vehicles carrying two satellites each.

Galileo is designed to provide a European global satellite navigation system with precision positioning services under civilian control.

Ariane 5 orbits Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a on Arianespace's latest mission from the Spaceport

Arianespace orbited telecommunications satellites for long-time customers on today's successful mission – confirming the company's role as a launch services leader in terms of availability, reliability and performance.

Conducted from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone in French Guiana, the successful mission delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 10,838 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) – utilizing the heavy-lift Ariane 5 member of Arianespace's launcher family, which also includes the medium Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

Designated Flight VA239, the mission carried Intelsat 37e for global operator Intelsat; along with BSAT-4a, which was launched as part of a turnkey contract between Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) and U.S.-based satellite manufacturer SSL. Intelsat 37e was deployed first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 at 29 minutes after liftoff, followed approximately 18 minutes later by BSAT-4a.

Another "Epic" launch for Intelsat

Intelsat 37e – built by Boeing using a 702MP platform – is the latest satellite from Intelsat's high-throughput EpicNG series to be launched. It also marks the fourth EpicNG spacecraft orbited by Arianespace to date (following Ariane 5 missions with Intelsat 29e and Intelsat 33e in January and August 2016, respectively, plus last February's heavy-lift flight that lofted SKY Brasil-1/Intelsat 32e).

Overall, Intelsat 37e is the 59th Intelsat satellite launched by Arianespace since 1983, as well as the 55th Boeing-produced spacecraft orbited by the company – continuing a partnership that extends back to 1987. Arianespace's order book includes three more satellites to be lofted for Intelsat. Two Boeing payloads are in the Arianespace order book for future missions: Horizon-3e and ViaSat 3F1.

Weighing an estimated 6,440 kg. at liftoff, Intelsat 37e will provide capacity for wireless backhaul, enterprise VSAT and mobility networks, carrying out its mission from a 342-deg. East orbital slot.

The launch leader for Japan

The second-released passenger on today's successful Ariane 5 flight, BSAT-4a, will be used for Direct-To-Home (DTH) television relay in Japan, as well as to expand the availability of advanced television services (such as 4K/8K ultra-high definition TV). It will operate from a final orbital position of 110 deg. East.

Arianespace has launched all B-SAT satellites since this company's creation, reflecting an unmatched position in the market. Since 1989, Arianespace has lofted a total of 29 GTO satellites for Japanese operators, representing more than 75 percent of the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) market share in Japan.

Arianespace's launch of BSAT-4a also continues its long-running partnership with SSL, having now launched a total of 64 satellites produced by this manufacturer since 1983 – with three more in the company's order book (Azerspace2/Intelsat-38, Eutelsat 7C, and Intelsat 39).

Arianespace's 2017 launch calendar

Flight VA239 was Arianespace's ninth launch in 2017, and it follows other heavy-lift Ariane 5 missions performed this year on February 14 (carrying SKY Brasil-1 and Telkom 3S), May 4 (SGDC and KOREASAT-7), June 1 (ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B) and June 28 (Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT-17).

Also conducted earlier in 2017 were Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz missions on January 27 (with Hispasat 36W-1) and May 18 (SES-15); plus light-lift Vega flights performed March 6 (Sentinel-2B) and August 1 (OPTSAT-3000 and Venµs).

Flight VA239: Arianespace orbits Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a on 81st successful Ariane 5 launch in a row

Arianespace has successfully launched the Intelsat 37e communications satellite for the operator Intelsat, along with the BSAT-4a digital TV broadcast satellite for manufacturer SSL (Space Systems Loral) as part of a turnkey contract with Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) of Japan.

The launch took place on Friday, September 29 at 6:56 p.m. (local time in Kourou) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America).

With this ninth launch of the year, and the fifth by Ariane 5, Arianespace also logged the 81st successful launch in a row by the Ariane 5 heavy launcher.

Boosting innovative space communications

Intelsat 37e is the 59th Intelsat satellite to be launched by Arianespace since Intelsat 507 was orbited in October 1983. The Arianespace order book includes two more satellites from this operator (Intelsat 39 and Horizon-3e).

Arianespace's heavy launcher: combining reliability and performance

With today's mission, the 81st successful launch in a row for Ariane 5, Arianespace's heavy launcher has once again proven its unrivaled reliability and performance. It also nearly equaled the launcher's payload record of 9,969 kg, set by flight VA237 in June 2017, by lofting a net payload weight of 9,958 kg.

Arianespace has carried out nine launches from the Guiana Space Center to date in 2017 (five by Ariane 5, two by Soyuz and two by Vega). Since the beginning of the year, the company has launched 15 payloads – including 12 into geostationary transfer orbit – totaling 55,440 kg.

Intelsat 37e, a next generation fixed and mobile communications satellite, will operate in C, Ku and Ka bands, providing high-quality, high-speed connections. Built by Boeing using a 702MP platform, the satellite will operate from geostationary orbit at 342° East. Its coverage zone includes the Americas, Europe and Africa. It weighed 6,438 kg at launch and offers a design life of 15 years.

The BSAT-4a satellite is dedicated to digital broadcasting, based on an innovative payload for high-definition and ultra-high-definition (4K/8K) TV broadcasts. Built by SSL using the 1300 platform, it will operate from geostationary orbit at 110° East, and will cover Japan. It weighed 3,520 kg at launch and offers a design life of 15 years.

The mighty Ariane 5 roared into the skies tonight after lifting off from it's launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana at 21:56 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4DQAdNzeK4&t=1316s) UTC, September 29th 2017. The 54 meter tall rocket placed the Intelsat 37e and BSAT-4a satellites into geosynchronous orbit. This was the 5th Ariane 5 launch of 2017 and the 95th overall, the previous launch attempt of this mission was scrubbed after engine ignition due to an electrical issue in a solid rocket booster.

Arianespace orbited telecommunications satellites for long-time customers on today's successful mission – confirming the company's role as a launch services leader in terms of availability, reliability and performance.

Conducted from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone in French Guiana, the successful mission delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 10,838 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) – utilizing the heavy-lift Ariane 5 member of Arianespace's launcher family, which also includes the medium Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

Designated Flight VA239, the mission carried Intelsat 37e for global operator Intelsat; along with BSAT-4a, which was launched as part of a turnkey contract between Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) and U.S.-based satellite manufacturer SSL. Intelsat 37e was deployed first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 at 29 minutes after liftoff, followed approximately 18 minutes later by BSAT-4a.

Riding on pillars of fire and smoke, Europe's Ariane 5 rocket blasted into the sunset over French Guiana on Friday, heading off on its final Geotransfer mission of the year with a pair of particularly heavy satellites for operators Intelsat and B-SAT to support a global network of cutting-edge communications satellites and beam down 8K Ultra-High Definition Television.

Ariane's fifth mission of the year started at 21:56 UTC when the 55-meter tall rocket jumped off its ELA-3 launch pad at the Guiana Space Center, rising into the twilit skies over the edge of the Amazon jungle before turning eastward under the power of its trusted Vulcain main engine and twin Solid Rocket Boosters that did most of the work for the first 135 seconds of the flight. After the boosters dropped away, Ariane 5 split open its payload fairing and continued on the first stage until just shy of T+9 minutes when the second stage took over for a 16 and a half-minute burn of its engine to accelerate the stack into a highly elliptical Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

Ariane 5 performed admirably while its engines were powering the vehicle into orbit and continued with a 22-minute ballistics phase to deliver the satellites into slightly different orbits with the 7.9-meter tall Intelsat 37e departing the stack 30 minutes after launch followed by the release of the smaller BSat-4a 17 minutes later to enable both to head off on their respective missions.

Friday's Ariane 5 launch marked the rocket's 95th mission and the 81st consecutive success for the workhorse launcher with one more flight to go in 2017 after Arianespace adjusted its manifest fr om an initial expectation of seven heavy-lift mission this calendar year. The last Ariane 5 mission of the year will utilize the ES variant of the rocket for a boost into Medium Earth Orbit with the next four satellites joining Europe's Galileo Navigation Satellite System.

Friday's launch marked another bread-and-butter mission for the Ariane 5, employing its ECA high-performance version to lift a pair of satellites into Geostationary Transfer Orbit – representing the vast majority of the launcher's business nowadays. In fact, Friday's mission was the vehicle's second heaviest GTO delivery with a total payload upmass of 10,838 Kilograms amassed by the two satellites and their adapters.

Riding in the front seat was Intelsat 37e, a massive communications satellite built by Boeing based on the 702MP platform for operation by Luxembourg's Intelsat as part of the company's satellite fleet. The 6,438-Kilogram satellite is the fifth in the company's Epic-NG series that delivers flexible coverage across the globe, leveraging the latest advances in satellite technology such as multi-band payloads, frequency re-use, power sharing capabilities and a combination of beam widths to deliver data-intensive services via fixed and steerable spot beams and broadcasting services through wide coverage beams.

The Intelsat 37e satellite hosts 90 C-Band, 275 Ku-Band and 37 Ka-Band transponders (36 MHz-equivalent units) covering the entirety of Europe, Africa and South America plus the Eastern U.S. and Canada. As the first satellite to use advanced Epic technology in all its bands, Intelsat 37e will deliver wireless backhaul, VSAT, enterprise and mobility services. Steerable beams in Ku/Ka-Band enable capacity to be directed where it is needed and enhanced power sharing capabilities for flexible assignment of power between shaped, fixed and steerable spot beams allows for an optimization for in-demand applications by region.

Intelsat 37e will operate for at least 15 years fr om an orbital location at 18°West wh ere it will replace the 16-year old Intelsat 901 satellite that is being decommissioned after surpassing its planned service life.

Heading into in the lower payload berth for the smaller of Ariane's two passengers was the 3,520-Kilogram BSat-4a, operated by Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) and built by Space Systems Loral based on the popular SSL-1300 platform. The satellite carries an all-Ku-Band payload with 24 transponders for Direct-To-Home Television distribution in standard and high-definition formats as well as the 4K and 8K Ultra-HD resolutions.

Spiraling up into Geostationary Orbit, the BSat-4a satellite will park at 110° East wh ere it will initially provide expansion coverage with focus on 4K/8K before eventually taking over for the BSat-3a satellite that entered service in 2007. The satellite is being launched in 2017 to provide a maximum of margin before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo which are planned to be broadcast in 4K and 8K though BSat-4a.

BSat-4a was ordered under a delivery-in-orbit contract in which SS/L procures the launch service for the satellite and is responsible for maneuvering the satellite into its operational orbit and completing all necessary testing & commissioning activity before turning the craft over to B-SAT for operational services.

The fifth Ariane 5 launch of the year enjoyed smooth early launch campaign until hitting a bump in the road when it had already passed the point of main engine ignition on September 5. Due to a problem sensed by the vehicle's onboard computer within an electronics component on one of the boosters, Ariane 5 triggered a shutdown of its engine (http://spaceflight101.com/ariane-5-va239/ariane-5-suffers-rare-on-pad-abort-after-engine-ignition/) – marking only the third post-ignition abort in the rocket's two-decade career. Ariane 5 returned to the Final Assembly Building to undergo replacement and re-testing of the suspect component as well as refurbishment on the Vulcain 2 engine after being fired.

Coming back from a 24-day delay, Ariane 5 rolled out to the ELA-3 launch pad Thursday afternoon after all re-checks showed the launcher systems to be ready. In position for liftoff, Ariane 5 entered a lengthy countdown of 11 hours and 23 minutes early on Friday, starting with power up of the launcher before an extensive testing campaign to award the vehicle a clean bill of health before tanking. All workers departed the launch complex by T-5 hours to allow 185 metric tons of -183°C Liquid Oxygen and -253°C Liquid Hydrogen to be pumped into the EPC first stage and ESC-A cryogenic second stage.

Loaded up on cryogenics, Ariane 5 stood fully fueled while final preparatory steps were run to transition the two satellites to battery power before the countdown switched into automatic mode at the T-7-minute mark after a brief delay due to an open item on the ground system. Under supervision by computers, Ariane 5 closed out propellant loading and started pressurizing its tanks, switched to internal power and configured its flight computers for launch with handoff to the vehicle occurring just seconds before ignition, coinciding with the retraction of the upper stage feed arms.

The Vulcain 2 engine started breathing fire once again when clocks hit zero, ramping up to a launch thrust of 96 metric-ton-force under close watch by computers that ensured the engine was up and running before commanding the twin boosters to light up, marking the point of no return.

Ariane 5 jumped off its launch pad at 21:56:07 UTC, just over twenty minutes after sunset at the equatorial launch base – lighting up the night over the French Guiana coast line as the launcher headed off with a total thrust of 1,420 metric-ton-force. A brief vertical climb was followed by the usual pitch and roll maneuvers that aligned Ariane 5 with an ascent path taking it straight east for a quick overflight of the Atlantic Ocean.

Burning some 3,600 Kilograms of propellant per second, Ariane 5 pushed through the sound barrier at T+49 seconds and encountered Maximum Dynamic Pressure at T+73 seconds when passing through 13 Kilometers in altitude.

The boosters did most of the work during the initial phase of the flight, each consuming 237 metric tons of solid propellant over the course of a two-minute and 15 seconds burn, helping Ariane 5 to accelerate to a speed of two Kilometers per second.

The 31.6-meter long EAP boosters separated at T+2 minutes and 22 seconds, 65 Kilometers in altitude when Ariane's onboard computers sensed the declining chamber pressures after the boosters ran out of propellant.

With the boosters gone, the ascending launch vehicle relied on the core stage's Vulcain 2 engine alone, delivering a thrust of 136,600 Kilogram-force when flying in the tenuous upper atmosphere.

Having departed the dense atmosphere, Ariane 5 split open and separated its 17-meter fairing halves three minutes and 23 seconds into the flight, shedding no-longer-needed weight as aerodynamic forces were no longer a danger to the satellites at altitudes of 112 Kilometers and above.

The first stage consumed its supply of 170 metric tons of LOX and LH2 after eight minutes and 56 seconds, having boosted the vehicle to a speed of 6.96 Kilometers per second. Four seconds after shutdown on the EPC, the 30.5-meter long stage separated 140 Kilometers over the Atlantic Ocean, clearing the second stage for ignition.

The 6,400-Kilogram-force HM-7B engine on the ESC-A second stage came to life nine minutes and four seconds into the mission, starting out on a lengthy propulsive flight phase of 16 minutes and 25 seconds to boost the stack into a highly elliptical orbit.

Tasked with accelerating the stack by another 2.4 Kilometers per second, the upper stage continued trekking east, being handed to downrange ground stations in Brazil, on Ascension Island and finally in Africa at Gabon and Malindi to cover the entirety of the mission.

The VA239 mission aimed for an orbit of 250 by 35,706 Kilometers at an inclination of 6 degrees, taking advantage of French Guiana's low latitude to inject the satellites into a low-inclination orbit to decrease their fuel expenditure when climbing to their operational orbits.

Having reached Africa's west coast, the upper stage shut down its main engine – trading the raw power of its rocket motor with the precision of its cold-gas thrusters that were up for over twenty minutes of maneuvering to dispatch the two passengers onto safe orbital paths.

Springs pushed the heavy Intelsat 37e away from the Sylda adapter 29 minutes and 50 seconds into the mission, embarking on its initial orbit raising campaign to take up station over the Atlantic Ocean to start out a multi-week commissioning campaign, getting ready to service four continents and the Atlantic region. With the first satellite on its way, ESC-A completed a re-orientation before dropping the Sylda adapter that held the upper passenger and enshrouded BSat-4a in the lower payload berth.

It was another 15 minutes of maneuvering after Sylda operation before BSat-4a was deployed to ensure no objects released by this launch would re-contact. BSat-4a separation 47 minutes after launch was met with applause at launch control as Ariane 5 advances its success streak, having been without failure since 2003.

For Ariane 5, the mission ended with the usual twenty-minute passivation sequence that included spinning the second stage up, venting down all tanks and powering off onboard systems.

Arianespace will be in action again on November 7/8 when Vega will make a nighttime liftoff to deliver the MN35-13 (Morocco EO Sat 1) Earth-imaging satellite for Morocco. The three-week delay to VA239 will have no effect on the VA240, currently looking at liftoff on December 12.

The C-band payload presents a comprehensive mix of high-power spot and wide beams, designed to deliver additional services and improved throughput. The Ku- and Ka-band steerable beams, which can be positioned as needed, have been added to increase network access and support high-demand areas for government and commercial mobility applications. They will complement the extensive Ku-band multi-spot beam coverage. Manufactured by Boeing and equipped with the highest throughput of the entire Intelsat EpicNG fleet, Intelsat 37e features enhanced power sharing technology to enable power to be assigned between shaped, fixed and steerable spot beams at Ku-band. Intelsat will be placed into service at 342° East. It will replace Intelsat 901, which will be repositioned. Intelsat 37e sent and received its first signals fr om space shortly after it launched today on board an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket. Once in service, the satellite will deliver high-throughput services to support enterprise, broadband, government and mobility applications in the Americas, Africa and Europe.

Recovering from a last-second launch abort earlier this month, an Ariane 5 rocket climbed into space Friday night from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana to place two U.S.-built communications satellites in orbit for Intelsat and Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. of Japan.

After a nine-minute delay, the Ariane 5 rocket took off with 2.9 million pounds of thrust at 2156 GMT (5:56 p.m. EDT; 6:56 p.m. French Guiana time) Friday, heading toward the east over the Atlantic Ocean with the Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a communications satellites.

Two side-mounted solid rocket boosters burned out and jettisoned around two-and-a-half minutes into the flight, and the Ariane 5's Swiss-made payload shroud fell away about a minute later.

The Ariane 5's Vulcain 2 main engine consumed around 700 pounds, or 320 kilograms, of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants per second until shutting down at the nine-minute point of the flight.

A smaller HM7B engine ignited on the Ariane 5's second stage to send the Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a spacecraft into an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit, aiming to guide the satellites into an orbit with a high point of 22,186 miles, a targeted low point of 155 miles and an inclination of 6 degrees.

A member of the Ariane launch team confirmed the rocket reached a near-perfect orbit, and Intelsat 37e and BSAT 4a separated from the launcher at approximately Plus+29 minutes and Plus+47 minutes, respectively.

Arianespace declared the flight a success, extending the Ariane 5's streak of consecutive successful launches to 81 in a row, a record dating back to 2003. Friday night's mission marked the fifth Ariane 5 launch of the year, and the 95th Ariane 5 flight overall.

"Arianespace is proud to share this fifth successful Ariane 5 launch of the year, its 81st in a row, with our American and Japanese customers," said Stephane Israel, CEO of Arianespace.

The mission's first launch attempt Sept. 5 was aborted after ignition of the Vulcain main engine, and before the irreversible ignition of the boosters, when a computer discovered a problem with an electrical component on one of the side-mounted motors.

Ground teams rolled the Ariane 5 back to its vertical assembly building at the spaceport to replace the suspect part and reattach fueling arms to the rocket's second stage, which retracted as designed in the final seconds of the halted countdown.

Two U.S.-built satellites are bolted on top of the Ariane 5 rocket.

The 14,193-pound Intelsat 37e satellite, occupying the upper position in the Ariane 5's dual-payload stack, will beam broadband, wireless communications, television and government services across the Americas, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe and the Middle East from a perch in geostationary orbit at 18 degrees west longitude. Made by Boeing in El Segundo, California, Intelsat 37e was the fifth new-generation Epic-series satellite launched for Intelsat.

"The Intelsat 37e satellite features power-sharing technology to optimize performance for specific applications and regions. This satellite also includes steerable beams to support high-performance mobility and government applications in Africa, Europe and the Americas."

Designed for a lifetime of at least 15 years, Intelsat 37e is the most capable Intelsat satellite ever launched. The new satellite will replace Intelsat 901 launched aboard an Ariane 4 rocket in June 2001.

"Intelsat 37e is also the first high-throughput satellite to offer full beam interconnectivity between C, Ku and Ka-band beams," Spengler said. "This unique feature, enabled by the digital payload, underscores the flexibility and high performance our customers have come to expect from the Intelsat Epic fleet."

Companies such as Speedcast, Omni-Access, Algeria Telecom and TIM Brazil will be among the first customers to deploy services on Intelsat 37e, Intelsat said in a statement, supporting 3G and 4G wireless networks and broadband services on commercial ships.

A Sylda adapter was discarded from the Ariane 5 a few minutes after separation of Intelsat 37e, revealing the 7,760-pound BSAT 4a spacecraft, the mission's other satellite passenger.

BSAT 4a will provide HD, 4K and 8K Ultra HD television broadcasts over Japan for Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. The satellite was built by Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, California, and carries 24 Ku-band transponders.

"BSAT 4a is the world's first 8K satellite," said Lincoln Day, senior executive director for the BSAT 4a program at SSL. "It will provide advanced television services for Japan, and it will provide 4K and 8K satellite television for the 2020 Olympics that happen in Tokyo, as well as the Paralympics that happen in that summer."

SSL will hand over control of the BSAT 4a satellite to its Japanese owners in October. BSAT 4a will replace the BSAT 3a satellite launched by an Ariane 5 rocket in 2007.

Both payloads launched Friday will fire on-board thrusters to reach their final circular orbits more than 22,000 miles over the equator. The orbit-raising burns will take around two weeks, then the satellites will complete their final solar array and antenna deployments and functional testing before starting commercial service.

Intelsat 37e will operate from a perch in geostationary orbit at 18 degrees west longitude, while BSAT 4a is heading for a geostationary slot at 110 degrees east longitude.

Arianespace's next launch is scheduled for Nov. 7, when a lightweight Vega rocket will send up a European-built reconnaissance satellite for the Moroccan government.

The next Ariane 5 launch is on track for Dec. 12 with four European Galileo navigation satellites.
