Four solid rocket boosters installed

The H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 35 aircraft is H2A204 with four solid rocket boosters SRB-A. In Unit 34 used for launch of the MICHIBIKI Unit 2 on June 1, the number of SRB-As installed was 2, but this time it doubled to 4 and improved launch capability. This is because the launch mass of MICHIBIKI Unit 2 is 4000 kg while that of Unit 3 is 4,700 kg, which is more than 700 kg higher than Unit 2.

The Japanese space agency said Wednesday the launch of an H-2A rocket with the country's third navigation satellite was preemptively delayed at least 24 hours to Saturday to avoid thunderstorms with lightning in the forecast later this week.

The 174-foot-tall (53-meter) rocket, currently standing inside the vertical assembly building at the Tanegashima Space Center, is now scheduled to launch some time during an unusually-long nine-hour window Saturday that opens at 0500 GMT (1 a.m. EDT; 2 p.m. Japan Standard Time).

Rollout of the H-2A rocket to the launch pad at Tanegashima is scheduled around a half-day before liftoff. Technicians will connect the two-stage rocket to the pad's electrical, telemetry and cryogenic propellant infrastructure before the final countdown.

The payload aboard the H-2A rocket is Michibiki 3, the third member of a four-satellite network Japan is deploying to supplement GPS navigation coverage over its territory. The launch of the 4.4-ton (4-metric ton) Michibiki 3 satellite comes after the delivery of two similar navigation stations to orbit by H-2A rockets in September 2010 and in June.

Another Michibiki satellite is scheduled for launch on an H-2A rocket as soon as late this year.

The four-satellite fleet, entirely compatible with the GPS network, is being positioned in orbits loitering over Japan at altitudes more than 20,000 miles (33,000 kilometers) above Earth. The first two Michibiki spacecraft went into inclined geosynchronous-type orbits that oscillate between the northern and southern hemispheres, while Michibiki 3 will launch into a geostationary orbit that hovers over the equator.

GPS satellites, operated by the U.S. Air Force, circle Earth in lower orbits, meaning different spacecraft are visible in the sky at different times, acting as navigation beacons to triangulate the location of ground users.

Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System will add more beacons to the sky over the Asia-Pacific, resulting in more precise position estimates and improved service in urban areas and remote regions, where high-rise buildings and mountains can obstruct signals from GPS satellites low on the horizon.

 August 11, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/h-iia-qzs-3/qzs-3-h-iia-launch-preview/)

A satellite designed to improve navigation availability and accuracy over Japan is ready for launch on Saturday atop an H-IIA rocket blasting off fr om the country's picturesque Tanegashima Space Center. Michibiki-3 is the third satellite to join the Quasi Zenith Satellite System designed to augment the U.S. Global Positioning System and Europe's Galileo for users in Japan's urban canyons and improve navigation accuracy throughout the Asia-Pacific Region.

>> Live Launch Coverage (http://spaceflight101.com/h-iia-qzs-3/live-h-iia-launch-coverage/)

2017 is a big year for the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) with three satellites set to join the initial prototype spacecraft launched in 2010 to establish the fully operational system consisting of three satellites in specialized elliptical orbits with high elevation angles for Japan and a single bird in Geostationary Orbit to provide 24/7 augmentation over a broad region. The deployment of the operational QZS constellation marks the culmination of 15 years of development work and more additions are planned later on to deliver further availability and accuracy enhancements.

Saturday's launch has an exceptionally long window opening at 4:40 UTC and extending eight and a half hours to send QZS-3 into a Geostationary Transfer Orbit to become the sole GEO satellite of the constellation as a constant navigation beacon over the Asia-Pacific Region. As the heaviest of the QZS satellites, Michibiki-3 rides on an H-IIA 204 rocket that enlists the help of four solid rocket boosters to send the 4,700-Kilogram craft on its way. H-IIA will be in action for 28 minutes and 40 seconds to dispatch QZS-3 into its highly elliptical target orbit via two burns of the rocket's upper stage.

Development of the Quasi Zenith Satellite System started back in 2002 with the overall objective of increasing the availability of GPS navigation services, particularly in the country's urban canyons wh ere tall buildings block all GPS satellites that are not at high elevation, potentially causing interruptions in service. To that end, QZSS proposed to establish a three-satellite constellation in a specialized orbit that places one satellite directly over Japan at any given time.

The QZSS satellites are designed to deliver two types of signals – GPS-compatible navigation signals and GPS augmentation messages that can be used by ground receivers to more accurately calculate user position. Through the GPS-compatible messages in the L1, L2 and L5 bands, the QZSS satellite can be treated as an additional member of the GPS constellation at high elevation angle from all locations in Japan, increasing availability of GPS.

The GPS augmentation approach followed by QZSS is similar to that of the U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System in that a number of ground stations monitor variability in GPS signals – caused by clock errors and ionospheric delay – and provide correction messages to a high-altitude satellite that immediately relays them to augmentation-enabled receivers on the ground to increase location accuracy to around one meter.

The first QZS satellite served as a pathfinder and underwent extensive signal characterization and fine tuning before being moved into active service nine months after launch. Studies showed that GPS accuracy was improved by a factor of 2.5 when QZS-1 was overhead and transmitting augmentation code. These results prompted JAXA to order three DS-2000-based satellites from manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric in 2013 for a total of $526 million to establish the QZSS constellation for 24/7 augmentation services, also expanding from an initial three-satellite design to a four-satellite constellation with one craft in Geostationary Orbit to broaden the accuracy augmentation zone to the entire Asia-Pacific Region.

QZS-3 as the geostationary member of the constellation weighs 4,700 Kilograms and measures 5.4 x 3.2 x 4.1 meters in size when in its stowed configuration and 19 meters from tip to tip when extending its two power-generating solar arrays. At the heart of the satellite sits a pair of redundant Rubidium Atomic Clocks that provide the ultra-stable timing needed in the generation of regular GPS navigation messages. Japan received clearance from the U.S. in 2006 to use the GPS navigation bands as well as the L1-SAIF augmentation signal architecture.

QZSS takes a unique spot in the satellite spectrum in that it is designed to augment another satellite constellation but moves beyond acting as a bent-pipe relay of ground-generated augmentation signals and in-fact delivers navigation signals of its own. The QZSS constellation will also be capable of augmentation for the European Galileo navigation constellation that will become operational before the end of the decade. QZSS itself will be fully operational by mid-2018 and JAXA plans to add another three satellites in the 2020s to further increase GPS availability in Japan's urban canyons.

The launch of the QZS-3 satellite will be the fourth flight of the H-II rocket family in 2017, having already lifted the DSN-2 defence communications satellite, the IGS Radar 5 reconnaissance satellite and the QZS-2 craft. It will be the second flight of the more-powerful 204 variant in 2017 and the 35th launch of the H-IIA since its introduction in 2001.

H-IIA 204 consists of a two-stage stack measuring four meters in diameter plus four SRB-A boosters clustered around the first stage. The vehicle stands 53 meters tall, weighs 443 metric tons at liftoff and lifts up to 15 metric tons into Low Earth Orbit and six tons into Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

>> H-IIA Launch Vehicle Overview (http://spaceflight101.com/spacerockets/h-iia-204/)

H-IIA emerged from its assembly building at the midnight hour for a 30-minute trip to cover 500 meters to Launch Pad 1 at the sea-side launch complex. Once at the pad, the rocket's Mobile Launch Platform will be hooked up to propellant, power and data interfaces and undergo power-up operations for an initial series of checkouts. H-IIA will press into propellant loading around seven hours and 45 minutes before the opening of the day's launch window, pumping 120 metric tons of -183°C Liquid Oxygen and -253°C Liquid Hydrogen into the two cryogenic rocket stages.

After the three-hour fueling sequence, H-IIA will be kept topped up at flight level while engineering teams work through a comprehensive list of checkouts to clear the vehicle for a 60-minute terminal countdown operation that will transition to a fully computer-controlled mode at X-4.5 minutes to put the vehicle through tank pressurization, transfer to internal power and the control handoff from the ground to the rocket's computers.

H-IIA will start breathing fire at X-5.2 seconds when the LE-7A main engine will soar to life, spinning up its turbopumps and building up thrust under close supervision of flight computers to ensure the engine reaches operational conditions before the boosters are ignited – committing the vehicle to flight.

At the moment of booster ignition, H-IIA will shoot off the ground with a total thrust of over 1,030 metric ton force – the boosters delivering almost 90% of the rocket's thrust at blastoff. With an initial thrust to weight ratio higher than two, H-IIA will climb vertically for only a handful seconds before beginning to pitch and roll in order to get aligned with its precisely planned ascent path taking the launch vehicle to the south-east for a trip across the Pacific Ocean, heading to a Low Earth Parking orbit.

The four boosters will fire for 108 seconds, in the process burning 66 metric tons of solid propellants and helping H-IIA accelerate to 2.2 Kilometers per second. Burnout will be sensed by the declining pressure in the combustion cambers and separation will be initiated two minutes and six seconds into the flight for the first two boosters and three seconds later for the other two, using the booster thrust struts to ensure a clean separation of the 15.1-meter long SRBs.

Powered flight continues on the LE-7A engine of the first stage, generating a thrust of 109 metric ton-force when flying through the rarefied upper atmosphere, consuming 260 Kilograms of cryogenics each second of powered flight. Three minutes and 45 seconds into the flight, H-IIA will be over 170 Kilometers in altitude and split open its five-meter payload fairing as aerodynamic forces can no longer harm the delicate spacecraft structure.

>> Flight Profile (http://spaceflight101.com/h-iia-qzs-3/flight-profile/)

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/152885.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/h-iia-qzs-3/wp-content/uploads/sites/173/2017/05/qzs3-ground-track.jpg)
Image: JAXA/Spaceflight101

The first stage will finish its job six minutes and 38 seconds into the flight, having boosted the vehicle's speed to 5.9 Kilometers per second. Eight seconds after cutoff, the 37-meter long first stage will drop away to clear the way for ignition of the second stage's LE-5B engine at X+6:52, soaring to a vacuum thrust of 13,970 Kilogram-force to lift the stack into a lightly elliptical Parking Orbit via a burn of four minutes and 31 seconds.

After completion of the first propulsive phase of the mission, H-IIA will enter a coast phase of approximately 12 minutes to continue on its south-easterly path in order to fire the engine again when passing the equator so that the high-point of the orbit can be placed above the equator as well – standard practice in GTO launches. The second burn is targeting ignition 23 minutes and 39 seconds after launch when H-IIA will be 370 Kilometers in altitude.

The second burn of the 11-meter long second stage has a planned duration of four minutes and 10 seconds to raise the vehicle's velocity by 2.5 Kilometers per second and significantly lift the high point of the orbit. H-IIA F35 is aiming for an orbit of 380 by 35,976 Kilometers at an inclination of 20 degrees with spacecraft separation expected 28 minutes and 40 seconds after liftoff.

The spring-loaded separation of the satellite will mark the start of its first steps in orbit – going through a stabilization maneuver and initiating communications with the ground for initial health checks that will clear the way for a multi-burn climb into Geostationary Orbit.

Safety officials have established road blocks 400 meters from Launch Pad No. 1 of the Yoshinobu launch complex. The Yoshinobu launch complex was built for the H-2 rocket program that began operations in 1994 and has since been modified for use by the more powerful and H-2A rocket family.
The pads are positioned on a rocky outcrop on the southeastern flank of Tanegashima Island, which lies about 80 miles south of Kagoshima, Japan.

The complex features two pads for the H-2A and H-2B rockets. Launch Pad No. 2 has been used for six flights of the H-2B rocket with the H-2 Transfer Vehicle, an unmanned cargo ship for the International Space Station. In all, 47 rockets have departed Earth from the Yoshinobu complex since 1994. The most recent flight was an H-2A rocket launch in June 2017.

Slew checks of the H-2A rocket's first stage engine have been completed, verifying the powerplant will be able to steer the launcher during ascent.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the H-2A rocket's contractor and commercial operator, reports the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen tanks aboard the launcher are now full of super-cold cryogenic propellant.

Another "go/no go" decision point is coming up soon, before the countdown enters the terminal phase at T-minus 60 minutes.

 https://translate.google.ru/#en/ru/cancel

A Japanese launch crew filled an H-2A rocket with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants in time for a planned liftoff Saturday with a geostationary navigation satellite, but a problem inside the launcher's propulsion system prompted officials to postpone the mission.

Officials announced a hold less than two hours before the 174-foot-tall (53-meter) H-2A rocket was set to blast off at 0440 GMT (12:40 a.m. EDT; 1:40 p.m. Japan Standard Time). The H-2A launch team called off the launch attempt several hours later, after the opening of an unusually-long launch window stretching nearly nine hours long.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said the launch was scrubbed to ensure the readiness of the H-2A rocket's propulsion systems. Officials said in a press conference Saturday that engineers were studying possible leak in the rocket's helium pressurization system.
The H-2A rocket was still on its launch pad as the sun rose Sunday at the Tanegashima Space Center, a spaceport overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the coast of southern Japan.

Fitted with four solid-fueled boosters and a 16.7-foot (5.1-meter) diameter payload shroud, the souped-up H-2A rocket is set to make its 35th flight, and its fourth launch this year.

The Michibiki 3 navigation craft mounted atop the H-2A rocket will join two similar satellites already in orbit designed to aid security forces and civilians users in Japan find their position. With the addition of a fourth navigation craft later this year, the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System will supplement positioning services over Japan provided by the U.S. military's Global Positioning System satellites.

The GPS satellites circle Earth in orbits 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers) above Earth. Although there are at least 30 operational GPS spacecraft, only a small fraction of the fleet is visible fr om a single point on Earth at one time.

It takes four GPS satellites to calculate a precise position on Earth, but a Michibiki satellite broadcasting the same four L-band signals will give a receiver an estimate if there are not enough GPS satellites visible, or it can help produce a more accurate position calculation even with full GPS service.

The navigation aids are particularly useful in regions like central Tokyo and other urban centers, wh ere high-rise buildings can block GPS signals from satellites near the horizon. Travelers in rugged terrain can also benefit from the additional coverage, wh ere mountains and steep ridges can interrupt satellite signals.

The two Michibiki satellites launched to date fly in inclined orbits, tracing figure-eight patterns as they oscillate north and south of the equator, while their longitudinal, or east-west, position remains over the Asia-Pacific at an average altitude of around 22,300 miles (nearly 35,800 kilometers) above Earth.

Michibiki 3 will head into an orbit at the same altitude, but will eventually settle into a parking slot over the equator, wh ere it will remain in a fixed geostationary position in the sky.

The fourth in the current series of Japanese navigation satellites will go up later this year on another H-2A rocket, taking up a post in an inclined high-altitude orbit like the first two.

Kyodo (https://english.kyodonews.jp/login).

Japan's H-IIA rocket has returned to its sea-side launch pad at the Tanegashima Space Center for the second launch attempt with Quasi Zenith Satellite 3, following a scrub last week and repairs completed inside the rocket's assembly facility. Saturday's multi-hour launch window opens at 5:29 UTC and stretches until 13:16, providing plenty of time to get the 53-meter tall vehicle off the ground.

To lift the 4.7-metric ton QZS-3 satellite to Geostationary Transfer Orbit, H-IIA is pulling out all the stops – flying in its heavy-duty 204 configuration with four Solid Rocket Boosters to deliver the additional kick needed to send the craft on its way via a 29-minute ascent mission by the two-stage launcher. Also called Michibiki-3, the satellite takes a special role within the QZSS navigation augmentation system as the sole geostationary member of the planned four-satellite constellation, beaming down correction messages across the Asia-Pacific Region to enhance GPS and Galileo navigation.

The H-IIA F35 rocket stood fully fueled atop Launch Pad 1 last Saturday when the day's launch attempt had to be called off over two hours into the launch window due a leak on the first stage's Helium system that could not be solved through troubleshooting steps with the rocket fueled on the pad.

Consequently, H-IIA was de-tanked and returned to the Vehicle Assembly Building for inspections on the system in question that holds high-pressure Helium in a central tank and delivers pressurized gas to the fuel and oxidizer tanks during flight to keep them at the proper pressurization levels.

In a press conference, launch vehicle operator Mitsubishi Heavy detailed that a foreign object within the seal of the fill & drain plug on the high-pressure Helium tank caused that seal to leak which was picked up on sensors as a loss of pressure from the system. Replacement components were put in place and pressure integrity checks confirmed that the Helium system of the 37-meter long first stage was holding pressure. The foreign object, characterized as non-metallic and 0.5mm in size, was introduced during processing when the fill/drain port on the tank was sealed up since only one of two such ports on the tank is in active use.

Announcing the new launch date, JAXA said H-IIA had been cleared for launch "after careful investigations and completion of repair actions of the rocket propulsion system."

After repairs and re-testing, H-IIA was ready to return to its launch pad for liftoff on Saturday before weather conditions slightly worsen over Tanegashima at the start of the week. Launch services provider MHI confirmed at 12:08 UTC on Friday that launch managers had given the GO for the planned midnight-hour rollout of the H-IIA rocket to set up for the second launch attempt. H-IIA started its rollout at around 12:30 a.m. local time, completing the 500-meter trip to Launch Pad 1 without issue to set the stage for a lengthy countdown operation.

Arriving at the launch pad, the rocket's Mobile Launch Platform will be hooked up to propellant, power and data interfaces and undergo power-up operations for an initial series of checkouts.

Burnout will be sensed by the declining pressure in the combustion chambers and separation will be initiated two minutes and six seconds into the flight for the first two boosters and three seconds later for the other two, using the booster thrust struts to ensure a clean separation of the 15.1-meter long SRBs.

Illustration of GPS Availability Enhancement in Japan's Urban Canyons – Image: JAXA

A week after a helium leak thwarted its first launch attempt, Japanese H-2A rocket has again rolled out to a launch pad at the Tanegashima Space Center for liftoff early Saturday with the country's third navigation satellite.
Liftoff is scheduled for 0529 GMT (1:29 a.m. EDT; 2:29 p.m. Japan Standard Time) with the Michibiki 3 spacecraft, a space-based navigation beacon heading for an orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

The rocket was fixed on top of a mobile launch tower for the 1,600-foot (500-meter) journey to Launch Pad No. 1, which took about a half-hour to complete.

The rollout began around 1530 GMT (11:30 a.m. EDT; 12:30 a.m. Japan Standard Time).

Technicians planned to plug the launch platform into ground electrical and propellant supplies before fueling begins in the final hours of the countdown. Since the rocket's arrival at the pad, the launch team has given the "go" to begin filling the H-2A with liquid propellants.

Once the launch team checks out the rocket's systems and loads it with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, an automated countdown sequencer will take over the final steps before liftoff.

Today's flight will be the 35th liftoff of an H-2A rocket, and the fourth H-2A mission this year. At least one more H-2A launch is on the books for 2017 with Japan's fourth navigation satellite.

Fueling of the H-2A rocket's two stages with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants is underway.

Another "go/no go" decision point is coming up soon, before the countdown enters the terminal phase at T-minus 60 minutes.

Now less than 30 minutes from the planned launch of the H-2A rocket.

Officials gave the "go" to enter the terminal count, which began at 0429 GMT (12:29 a.m. EDT). The final hour of the countdown will prepare the rocket, the payloads, and ground systems for flight.
The H-2A rocket for today's launch is flying in the "204" configuration with four large 15-meter-long (49-foot) solid rocket boosters and without any of the smaller strap-on boosters sometimes used to augment the launcher's thrust.

It also features the H-2A's rarely-used 5.1-meter (16.7-foot) diameter nose shroud, which encloses the Michibiki 3 spacecraft for the first few minutes of flight through the lower atmosphere.

The lead contractor for the H-2A rocket is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

There are 22 minutes left in today's countdown before liftoff of the H-2A rocket with Michibiki 3, a Japanese navigation satellite designed to improve the accuracy of space-based positioning and timing services over East Asia.
Michibiki 3 weighs about 4 metric tons, or approximately 8,800 pounds, at the time of launch. It was built by Mitsubishi Electric Corp. in Japan.

The spacecraft will broadcast four L-band navigation signals circular geostationary orbit nearly 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

Michibiki 3 is the third satellite designed for Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, which aims to improve navigation accuracy in Japan, especially in urban areas and rough terrain where skyscrapers and terrain block GPS signals.

Japan plans to deploy four members of the QZSS fleet. The first stations launched in September 2010 and this past June 1, and another is due for launch before the end of this year.

Michibiki 3 is designed for a 15-year service life.

T-minus 15 minutes. Engineers are uploading the latest upper level wind data into the H-2A's flight computer. The rocket will use the information to compute a specific steering profile based on the real launch day weather conditions.
At liftoff, the H-2A will be propelled upward from the launch pad on the power of a single hydrogen-burning LE-7A main engine and two solid rocket motors. The total liftoff thrust of the rocket is approximately 2.5 million force pounds.

The rocket will pitch east from Tanegashima, racing through the speed of sound in less than a minute and reaching an altitude of more than 30 miles in the first two minutes of flight.

After consuming their pre-packed solid propellant, the two strap-on boosters will jettison at about the two-minute point. The 16.7-foot diameter payload shroud will separate at T+plus 3 minutes, 45 seconds after the H-2A rocket ascends above the discernable traces of Earth's atmosphere.

First stage main engine cutoff, stage separation and ignition of the second stage's LE-5B engine will between six-and-a-half and seven minutes into the mission. The second stage will burn more than four minutes before shutting down at T+plus 11 minutes, 23 seconds.

After a 12-minute coast, the second stage will reignite for a 4-minute burn.

Deployment of the Michibiki 3 satellite is expected at T+plus 28 minutes, 40 seconds.

T-minus 12 minutes. In the final minutes of the countdown, an automated sequencer will control the final crucial steps before launch.
The automatic sequence will begin at T-minus 4 minutes, 30 seconds and computers will pressurize the H-2A's propellant tanks for flight at about T-minus 4 minutes, 20 seconds.

At about T-minus 3 minutes, the launcher will transition to internal battery power and remove external power.

Water will be released onto the launch pad deck beginning at T-minus 73 seconds to help suppress sound and acoustics during the ignition and liftoff. The vehicle's pyrotechnic and ordnance systems will be armed at T-minus 30 seconds and the rocket's guidance system initializes at T-minus 18 seconds.

Batteries controlling solid rocket booster ignition are activated at T-minus 15 seconds.

Sparklers underneath the rocket's main engine ignite at T-minus 11.7 seconds to burn off residual hydrogen that could be an explosive hazard at main engine start.

 August 19, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/h-iia-qzs-3/h-iia-launches-third-qzss-satellite/)

Japan's H-IIA rocket soared to its fourth success of the year on Saturday, deploying the third satellite in the country's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System for navigation services augmentation in a fast-paced effort to complete the four-satellite constellation before the end of the year for full service capability by mid-2018. Operated fr om Geostationary and highly specialized Tundra orbits, the system delivers a twofold service to improve the availability of navigation services by placing satellites at high-elevation over the Japanese islands and to enhance navigation accuracy by delivering augmentation messages to equipped GPS and Galileo receivers.

Blasting off with the heaviest member of the constellation, H-IIA flew in its most-powerful 204 configuration on Saturday, featuring four Solid Rocket Boosters to deliver the initial kick needed to send the craft on its way. QZS-3, also known as Michibiki-3, is the sole Geostationary Satellite of the constellation – tasked with providing a constant navigation beacon in the sky over the broader Asia-Pacific Region, delivering navigation augmentation messages for accuracy enhancement in aviation, scientific application and future self-driving automobiles.

H-IIA blasted off from its sea-side launch pad at the picturesque Tanegashima Island on the southern tip of Japan at 5:29 UTC on Saturday, 2:29 p.m. local time – leaping off the ground with a thrust exceeding 1,000 metric-ton-force. Screaming away from the Japanese Islands, H-IIA was headed south east, dropping its boosters just after two minutes into the flight and continuing to fire its cryogenic core stage for six and a half minutes before handing over to the single-engine second stage for an initial boost into Low Earth Orbit. The second stage re-started after a passive coast phase to significantly boost the high point of the orbit and loaded springs pushed QZS-3 on its way 28 minutes and 40 seconds after liftoff, arriving in a standard Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

2017 is a very busy year for the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) with all three operational satellites launching within one calendar year to join the initial pathfinder craft that launched back in 2010 to establish the fully operational satellite constellation comprising one satellite in GEO and three satellites at the proper spacing in inclined Tundra orbits to have one craft at high elevation over Japan at any given time.

The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System takes a unique spot in the world's satellite systems in that it augments a foreign constellation in twofold fashion – a) it acts as a member of the Global Positioning System and transmits GPS-compliant navigation signals to increase its availability by placing a GPS mimic at high elevation over Japan, and b) it relays augmentation signals generated on the ground to specially-equipped receivers to improve GPS and Galileo navigation accuracy through the correction of clock drifts and atmospheric signal distortion.

Illustration of GPS Availability Enhancement in Japan's Urban Canyons – Image: JAXA

Traditional navigation augmentation systems like the U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System widely used in aviation only deliver augmentation signals but the case for Japan was special in that not only an accuracy improvement was needed due to the fact that the country's urban canyons were often blocking a direct line of sight from a ground receiver to a sufficient number of GPS satellites to allow for position calculation. To increase GPS availability between tall buildings, an additional GPS source at very high elevation was needed – raising the odds for sufficient satellites being available to obtain a position fix.

This is realized by placing three GPS-transmitting QZSS satellites into specialized Tundra orbits that allows one satellite to be at very high elevation at any time, being treated by ground receivers like any other member of the GPS constellation. The accuracy enhancement is realized independently through specialized GPS/Galileo messages delivering correction information.

The QZSS program started out back in 2002 when development work was started by an industry consortium which later fell apart with JAXA taking over work on the project. Clearance for use of the GPS navigation bands & signal architecture was given by U.S. authorities, allowing the project to move to the launch pad in 2010 with a pathfinder satellite.

QZS-1 went through extensive signal characterization and fine-tuning before beginning to deliver services in 2011 to validate the working principle of QZSS – demonstrating service availability enhancement and increasing navigation accuracy by a factor of 2.5. With the concept proven, JAXA ordered three satellites from Mitsubishi Electric for a total of $526 million to establish the operational constellation.

Based on the flight-proven DS-2000 satellite platform, QZS-3 stands 5.4 meters tall and weighs 4,700 Kilograms, including 475kg for the navigation payload and 3,000kg of maneuvering propellant. At the heart of the navigation package sits a pair of redundant Rubidium Atomic Clocks that provide the ultra-stable timing needed for the generation of the navigation signal that is transmitted via an L-Band antenna.

QZSS delivers navigation signals in the L1, L2 and L5 bands which are processed by ground-based receivers like a typical GPS signal. Augmentation messages are not generated onboard the satellite but on the ground through monitoring of GPS and Galileo signal variability by an array of ground stations across Japan and surrounding regions which detect clock errors and other factors like signal delay caused by changes in Earth's ionosphere.

Correction data for these varying factors is uplinked to the QZS satellite which immediately re-transmits it to any enabled receiver in its footprint that can then apply the corrections to its navigation solution to yield a more accurate location, on average with one-meter accuracy. QZS-3 in GEO provides a constant, large footprint over the Asia-Pacific Region, realizing a broad augmentation service, primarily used for aviation.

QZSS delivers the L1-SAIF (Sub-meter class Augmentation with Integrity Function) that is compatible with the U.S. Wide Area Augmentation System, plus an L1-SAIF+ signal that allows receivers to acquire GPS position lock faster and provides space for messages for disaster relief. Additionally, an experimental signal designated L-EX is compatible with the European Galileo satellite constellation coming on line by the end of the decade.

Called upon for the launch of the heaviest QZSS member was the H-IIA 204, enlisting the help of two additional boosters to be able to lift the satellite into a highly elliptical orbit. Saturday's launch was the 35th H-IIA launch since its debut in 2001, the fourth in the 204 configuration and the fourth H-IIA launch of the year – matching the rocket's previous record for most launches in a calendar year set in 2006 and 2014.

QZS-3 had the luxury of a lengthy launch window of nearly eight hours that it ended up not needing as liftoff occurred at the very opening of the window following a clean countdown that started at midnight local time with the rollout of the 53-meter tall H-IIA rocket. Arriving at the pad, H-IIA was hooked up to ground facilities and engineers vacated the danger zone for propellant loading at X-7 hours to fill the two-stage stack with some 120 metric tons of cryogenic propellants, bringing H-IIA's launch mass to 443 metric tons with the majority of propellants packed into the four Solid Rocket Boosters.

Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen were kept topped up at flight level while H-IIA underwent complex testing to clear the way for a fast-paced computer-controlled countdown sequence kicking off at X-4.5 minutes to pressurize the rocket's tanks, switch the launcher to battery power and transition it to flight mode with its own computers in full control. Flames erupted from the base of the rocket at X-5.2 seconds when the LE-7A engine began its carefully controlled ignition sequence, soaring to a thrust of 86,000-Kilogram force and reaching stable operating conditions before the point of no return – ignition of the four boosters.

With a thrust just exceeding 1,000 metric-ton force, H-IIA leapt off its ocean-side launch pad – the boosters doing most of the work, delivering 90% of the rocket's total thrust. H-IIA climbed vertically for only a few seconds before entering its pitch and roll maneuver to get aligned with a departure path to the south east, headed across the Pacific Ocean on the usual route to Geostationary Transfer Orbit.

Photo: @shinnosuke0113 / Twitter (https://twitter.com/shinnosuke0113/status/898783198859083776)

Burning some 2,550 Kilograms of propellants per second, H-IIA pushed through the sound barrier less than a minute after launch and passed Maximum Dynamic Pressure as it made its way through the dense atmosphere, entering a slight thrust reduction on the boosters to maintain structural limits. Each of the SRB-A4 boosters clustered around the core stage delivered a vacuum thrust of 2,263 Kilonewtons, consuming 66 metric tons of propellant over a burn of 106 seconds to help boost H-IIA's speed to 2.2 Kilometers per second.

Burnout of the boosters was sensed by their declining chamber pressure and H-IIA held onto them for another 20 seconds to ensure safe thrust tail-off and an off-shore impact. The 15-meter long boosters fell away in pairs at X+2:06 and X+2:09 when H-IIA had reached an altitude of 85 Kilometers – continuing toward space powered by the core stage alone.

37 meters long and 4 meters in diameter, H-IIA's first stage launched with 103 metric tons of cryogenics on board, consumed by the single LE-7A engine to deliver 109 metric ton-force of thrust when flying through the tenuous upper atmosphere.

Three minutes and 45 seconds into the flight, H-IIA had reached an altitude of 173 Kilometers and jettisoned its payload fairing to reveal the Michibiki-3 satellite and shed no-longer-needed weight. This flight used the larger 5S type fairing with a five-meter diameter to house the rather large satellite, marking that's fairing's come back after over a decade.

Mission Ground Track – Image: JAXA/Spaceflight101

The first stage finished its role in the flight six minutes and 38 seconds after launch, shutting down its main engine and dropping away eight seconds later after accelerating the rocket to a speed of 5.9 Kilometers per second, lifting it to 270 Kilometers in altitude. Stage 2 promptly ignited its engine six minutes and 52 seconds after launch on a planned four-minute and 31-second burn to inject the stack into a Low Earth Parking Orbit.

Generating 13,970 Kilogram-force of thrust, the second stage successfully reached its intended Parking Orbit eleven and a half minutes after liftoff and entered a 12-minute coast phase toward the equator. The LE-5B main engine fired up again 23 minutes and 35 seconds into the mission for a burn of four minutes and nine seconds to significantly lift the apogee of the orbit, targeting a standard Geostationary Transfer Orbit of 380 by 35,976 Kilometers at an inclination of 20 degrees.

Stage 2 performed admirably and achieved the planned orbit for separation of the QZS-3 satellite 28 minutes and 39 seconds after liftoff, embarking on a multi-burn orbit raising campaign to take up residence in Geostationary Orbit wh ere it can remain locked over the Asia-Pacific Region.

The four-satellite QZSS constellation is expected to be complete by the end of the year with QZS-4 currently looking at a launch target around October, set to join QZS-1 and 2 in Tundra orbit for a final testing campaign before fully operational QZSS services are rolled out around April 2018.

A Japanese H-2A rocket soared away from a launch pad on a rocky overlook on the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, hauling into orbit the country's third Michibiki satellite to join a constellation of navigation aids to improve positioning services across the country.
The third satellite to join Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System took off at 0529 GMT (1:29 a.m. EDT; 2:29 p.m. Japan Standard Time) Saturday, eight days later than originally scheduled.

Weather pushed back the mission's initial Aug. 11 launch date, and a leaky helium pressurization system scrubbed a launch attempt Aug. 12, forcing ground crews to roll the rocket back to its hangar for repairs.

The 174-foot-tall (53-meter) H-2A launcher, powered by a hydrogen-fueled main engine and four strap-on solid rocket boosters, headed east from the Tanegashima Space Center, a spaceport built on an island at the southwestern edge of the country.

Climbing through a clear afternoon sky on 2.5 million pounds of thrust, the H-2A rocket quickly exceeded the speed of sound and left a twirling column of exhaust in its wake.

The four solid rocket boosters let go from the launcher around two minutes after liftoff, and the shroud covering the Michibiki 3 spacecraft jettisoned a couple of minutes later.

The H-2A's cryogenic upper stage engine performed back-to-back burns to guide the Michibiki 3 satellite into an oval-shaped geostationary transfer orbit that will take the payload more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) above Earth at its highest point.

The Japanese launch team reported no issues during the flight, and they announced an on-target separation of the Michibiki 3 satellite around 29 minutes into the mission, prompting applause from engineers in the H-2A control center.

The satellite was expected to radio its status to a ground station soon after launch, and Michibiki 3's on-board engine will conduct multiple firings over the next few days to circularize its orbit at geostationary altitude — around 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers) over the equator.

Built by Mitsubishi Electric, the navigation craft joins two similar satellites launched on H-2A rockets in September 2010 and in June of this year. Those previous spacecraft circle Earth in orbits tilted at an angle to the equator, causing them to oscillate north and south, but remain always fixed over the Asia-Pacific region.

A fourth Japanese navigation satellite will launch later this year on another H-2A flight.

Michibiki means "guiding" or "showing the way" in Japanese.

The network will help ensure drivers, hikers and other users can constantly locate themselves. Skyscrapers in cities, such as Tokyo, and mountainous terrain can block signals from GPS satellites, which are located in orbits closer to Earth than the Michibiki satellites.

The GPS constellation, operated by the U.S. Air Force, flies 12,550 miles (20,200 kilometers) above Earth. Although there are at least 30 operational GPS spacecraft, only a small fraction of the fleet is visible from a single point on Earth at one time.

It takes four GPS satellites to calculate a precise position on Earth, but a Michibiki satellite broadcasting the same four L-band signals will give a receiver an estimate if there are not enough GPS satellites visible, or it can help produce a more accurate position calculation even with full GPS service.

"The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System is the first in the world to transmit sub-meter and centimeter level augmentation signals," said Hiromichi Moriyama, executive director of the National Space Policy Secretariat in Japan's Cabinet Office. "It will be in charge of communications linking evacuation shelters and emergency response headquarters in times of disaster."

Officials say urban planning, agriculture, disaster response and national security will be supported by the four-satellite navigation fleet.

Japan is not the country developing a regional navigation fleet to improve GPS signals over its territory.

India has launched seven navigation satellites — with an eighth due for liftoff later this month — to work in concert with the GPS satellites across the subcontinent.

Meanwhile, European nations and China are developing and deploying separate navigation networks to provide global services independent of the GPS constellation. Russia already has its own satellite navigation system with near-global coverage.

- КА с орбитой типа "Тундра" - QZS-1, QZS-2 и QZS-4 - масса около 4000 кг;
QZS-3 stands 5.4 meters tall and weighs 4,700 Kilograms, including 475kg for the navigation payload and 3,000kg of maneuvering propellant.
