ASX-listed nano-satellite telecommunications provider Sky & Space Global is readying to launch its 3 Diamonds nano satellites with the scheduled launch set for late May.


The company (ASX:SAS) has now confirmed the launch by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from its launch site at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India.

Sky and Space Global's chief executive Meir Moalem says confirmation of the launch schedule is a substantial milestone for the company and precedes the first in-flight commercial demonstration of its technology and business model.

"We are excited to have the launch window for our 3 Diamonds officially announced. We have made substantial progress in the past 12 months and with our nano-satellites constructed and now ready to launch, we would like to thank shareholders for their continued support.

Aalto-1 is launched into space in India from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharika, Andhra Pradesh Province, with the PSLV launcher of the Indian space exploration organization. The launch will take place at the end of April 2017.

Cartosat-2 Series Satellite mission is a follow on mission in the Cartosat-2 Series with the primary mission objective of providing high-resolution scene specific spot imagery. This is similar in configuration to earlier satellites in the series.

The Cartosat-2 Series Satellite along with co-passenger satellites from abroad is planned to be launched by PSLV-C38 into a nominal altitude of 500 km.

Isro sets focus on PSLV-C38 launch by June 28

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After the historic launch of the 640 ton, first developmental flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) -Mark III (D1) on June 5, the team of scientists from Isro centres here have set their target to launch its second developmental flight GSLV-Mark III -D2 by Jan 2018 with more payload and higher thrust. Ahead of that, two more GSLV launches and three more PSLV launches are planned including the latest PSLV -C38 on June 28.

"With the success of the mammoth 640 ton GSLV-Mk III (D1), its second developmental flight of GSLV-Mark III -D2 is planned for Jan next year," Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) director Dr K Sivan told TOI on his return from Sriharikota on Tuesday. He and his team members were accorded a warm reception on their arrival at Trivandrum airport.

"Now, this launch has placed a powerful 3,136kg high throughput communication satellite GSAT-19 in geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) which has a mission life of 10 years. Instead of single transponders, it uses a satellite beam with multiple transponders which will facilitate significant leap in digital communication with its high speed data," he said. Further, he added that the immediate focus is on the launch of PSLV-C38 by June 28.

"The second developmental flight of GSLV-Mk III D2 launch planned in Jan 2018 will have a lift off mass more than 640 ton. Improvisation in vehicle systems is targeted to achieve 500kg more payload than in the D1 launch. The liquid propellant L110 stage will operate at 6 per cent extra thrust throughout the flight duration in the upcoming D2 launch, compared to D1," GSLV MK III Vehicle director J Jayaprakash told TOI.

On the upcoming launches, he said "Before Jan 2018, we are targeting two more GSLVs and three more PSLV launches including the PSLV-C38 planned on June 28".

Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) director S Somnath told TOI that the GSV MKIII D1 launch with its human-rated benign features was equipped with a fully indigenous cryogenic engine of 20 ton thrust with 28 ton propellant loading. The cryogenic engine used in this launch has 2.5 times more thrust than the previous cryogenic engine with 12 ton thrust. In the second development flight of GSLV -MK III D2, the systems will be improvised further with higher thrust.

We have completed the final flight preparation of almost all the doors holding CubeSats inside the 5 QuadPacks on this ISILaunch19 / PSLV C38 launch. One door remains unlocked for now, as the CubeSat in that slot will still be taken out of the QuadPack for fueling of propellant.

In parallel to the QuadPack activities, we have done final testing and preparation of the ISIS modular deployment controller, or iMDC sequencer, that will command each of the QuadPack doors at the correct time

For most launches, the sequence is relatively straight forward with the deployment of all satellites in one QuadPack before moving to the next. This time, from the ballistics analysis on the sequence for all the satellites with different mass and size, it turned out that for deployment safety the sequence had to be quite 'spread over QuadPacks', which makes the sequence test quite interesting with a large group of safety officers checking the test run. But all went well, and the iMDC is now being charged for the final time.

Tomorrow we will box all hardware again, and move to the next building for the fueling and integration phase.

Каждый раз, смотря на этот "кривой ствол", ловлю себя на мысли, что индийцы зря упустили возможность установить мировой рекорд по длине названия космодрома - могли бы построить его в местечке Тираппанипатантарувай и не маяться

При запусках на низкие наклонения (ГПО) ступени бы на Шри-Ланку падали. Непорядок. Чтобы уйти от необходимости выполнять этот заворот при запусках на ССО у индийцев есть планы построить второй космодром - северо-восточнее Шрихарикоты, м.б. даже на месте нынешнего военного полигона Чандипур в штате Орисса.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Now, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has scheduled the launch of the Cartosat-2E satellite on board its proven workhorse `Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle' - PSLV-C 38 for June 23. Preparations are on full swing as the vehicle is assembled and integrated with the satellite.

"Called the `Eye in the sky', Cartosat-2E satellite is an advanced remote sensing satellite or earth observation satellite having surveillance capabilities with its Multi-Spectral optical imager and panchromatic camera. It will be launched on board PSLV-C38 on June 23," ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar told TOI. It is similar to the Cartosat-2 series satellites launched in June last year and Feb this year, he said.

It may be reminded that the two previous Cartosat-2 series launched include Cartosat-2C on board PSLV C-34 on June 22 last year and Cartosat-2D on board PSLV-C37 on Feb 15 this year that deployed a record 104 satellites in sun-synchronous orbit.

On the reason for similar satellite launches, he said, "Actually, Cartosat satellite imagery offers small coverage with high-resolution scene specific spot imagery. So more such satellites are required". With this satellite, the payload will have more satellites from other countries, he said.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) director K Sivan also confirmed that the PSLV-C38 is set for launch on June 23 to place the Cartosat-2E satellite in sun-synchronous orbit and arrangements are on for that.

While, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) director S Somnath said the Cartosat-2E is the third satellite of the Cartosat-2 series intended for cartography or mapping, spatial observation and information dissemination. The vehicle is fully assembled, he said.

"It is progressing well. The satellite Cartosat-2E is integrated with PSLV-C38 vehicle and the mission readiness review meet will be held on June 21 ahead of the countdown for the launch, said J Jayaprakash, vehicle director of GSLV-Mk III.

Pegged at a project cost of Rs 160 crore, the 550 kg Cartosat-2E satellite launch is aimed at collecting high resolution large-scale maps which will be used for urban planning, services, infrastructure development, traffic management and disaster management.

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its 40th flight (PSLV-C38 ), will launch the 712 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation and 30 co-passenger satellites together weighing about 243 kg at lift-off into a 505 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). PSLV-C38 will be launched from the First Launch Pad (FLP) of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. This will be the seventeenth flight of PSLV in 'XL' configuration (with the use of solid strap-on motors).

The co-passenger satellites comprise 29 Nano satellites from 14 countries namely, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, United Kingdom, and United States of America as well as one Nano satellite from India. The total weight of all these satellites carried on-board PSLV-C38 is about 955 kg.

The 29 International customer Nano satellites are being launched as part of the commercial arrangements between Antrix Corporation Limited (Antrix), a Government of India company under Department of Space (DOS) and the commercial arm of ISRO and the International customers.

PSLV-C38/Cartosat-2 Series Satellite M ission is scheduled to be launched on June 23, 2017 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota .

India's most trusted rocket PSLV will also take 30 co-passenger satellites weighing about 243 kg at lift-off into a 505 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

ISRO sources told Deccan Herald on Tuesday evening that the rocket will be launched at country's spaceport Sriharikota 90 km from north Chennai.

"The rocket will take off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) on June 23, a senior ISRO official here said.

According to him, after getting clearance from Mission Readiness Review (MRR) committee and Launch Authorisation Board (LAB), the countdown of the PSLV-C38 launch mission will be announced.

This will be the seventeenth flight of PSLV in 'XL' configuration (with the use of solid strap-on motors).

The primary Cartosat-2 series satellite is a remote sensing satellite, After its injection into the required orbit, the satellite will be brought to operational configuration following which it will begin providing regular remote sensing services using its panchromatic and multispectral cameras.

The imagery sent by the satellite will be useful for cartographic applications, urban and rural applications, coastal land use and regulation, utility management like road network monitoring, water distribution, creation of land use maps, change detection to bring out geographical and man-made features and various other land information system as well as geographical information system (GIS) applications.

The countdown for the PSLV-C38 mission began on Thursday morning, engineers at ISRO were preparing to execute a series of complex manoeuvres for the shutdown and reignition of the rocket engines in space.

The engines in the fourth stage will be reignited three times, in a bid to master the technique that will enable ISRO to inject satellites into different orbits in a single launch. "It will be a validation of the technique that was tested in the PSLV-C34 mission and deployed in the subsequent C35 mission", says B. Jayakumar, PSLV project director. The exercise will be conducted after all 31 satellites on PSLV-C38 have been injected into orbit.

"Once the last satellite has been separated from the rocket at a height of 520 km, the fourth stage of the rocket (PS4) comprising two liquid propellant engines will be shut down and reignited three times," Mr. Jayakumar told The Hindu. While the first two firings are expected to last about six seconds each, the third restart is likely to fire up to 40 seconds.

The multiple reignition of the on board engines will validate the technique and provide ISRO with the mission flexibility to inject satellites into three different orbits in a single flight to reduce the launch cost and save time.

ISRO reports the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle is fully fueled for today's launch. The final step was loading of more than 92,000 pounds (42 metric tons) of hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide into the PSLV's second stage.

Technicians filled the PSLV's fourth stage with its storable liquid propellant earlier in the 28-hour countdown sequence. The first and third stages of the rocket are fueled by pre-packed solid propellants.

PSLV-C38 Successfully Launches 31 Satellites in a Single Flight
ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C38 successfully launched the 712 kg Cartosat-2 Series Satellite along with 30 co-passenger satellites today (June 23, 2017) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. This is the thirty ninth consecutively successful mission of PSLV.

PSLV-C38 lifted off at 0929 hrs (9:29 am) IST, as planned, from the First Launch Pad.  After a flight of about 16 minutes, the satellites achieved a polar Sun Synchronous Orbit of 505 km inclined at an angle of 97.44 degree to the equator (very close to the intended orbit) and in the succeeding seven and a half minutes, all the 31 satellites successfully separated from the PSLV in a predetermined sequence beginning with Cartosat-2 series satellite, followed by NIUSAT and 29 customer satellites. The total number of Indian satellites launched by PSLV now stands at 48.

After separation, the two solar arrays of Cartosat-2 series satellite were deployed automatically and ISRO's Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore took over the control of the satellite. In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration following which it will begin to provide various remote sensing services using its panchromatic (black and white) and multispectral (colour) cameras.

One of the 30 co-passenger satellites carried by PSLV-C38 was the 15 kg NIUSAT, a University/Academic Institute satellite from Nurul Islam University, Tamil Nadu, India. The remaining 29 co-passenger satellites carried were international customer satellites from USA (10), United Kingdom (3), Belgium (3),  Italy (3),  Austria (1), Chile (1), Czech Republic (1), Finland (1), France (1), Germany (1), Japan (1), Latvia (1), Lithuania (1) and Slovakia (1).

With today's successful launch, the total number of customer satellites from abroad placed in orbit by India's workhorse launch vehicle PSLV has reached 209.

India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle lifted off fr om an island spaceport on the country's east coast Friday morning, quickly climbing into clear skies before navigating around the Island of Sri Lanka in a pre-programmed maneuver and then heading south over the Indian Ocean to drop an international assortment of 31 satellites off in orbit – including the first satellites for Latvia and Slovakia.

Two more boosters joined in shortly after liftoff while PSLV was still heading south east, initiating a powered turn when the second stage's Vikas engine was burning and the rocket had cleared Sri Lanka.

PSLV dropped its fairing and fired its third stage ahead of a final push into a 500-Kilometer orbit by the rocket's fourth stage that set up for a fast-paced six-minute satellite deployment to send on the way a diverse group of satellites from 2.4 meters to ten centimeters in size.

Leading the way was India's 712-Kilogram CartoSat-2E (http://spaceflight101.com/pslv-c38/cartosat-2e/) Earth-Imaging satellite that made its way into orbit as the primary payload of Friday's flight, accompanied by four microsatellites from Japan, India, Italy and Latvia and 26 CubeSats ranging between one and ten Kilograms in mass for a cumulative secondary payload mass of 243 Kilograms.

Friday's launch marked India's fourth of the year, following in the footsteps of the record-setting PSLV mission (http://spaceflight101.com/pslv-c37/) in February that lifted a total of 104 satellites, the secretive delivery of India's South Asia Sat (http://spaceflight101.com/gslv-gsat-9/) atop a GSLV Mk.II and the first orbital test flight (http://spaceflight101.com/gslv-mk3-d1/) of the country's most powerful rocket, the GSLV Mk. III just 18 days prior to PSLV's C38 mission – matching the country's previous record for the shortest turnaround time between orbital space shots.

Although Friday's launch did not set a new record, safely deploying 31 satellites into orbit is by no means a trivial task but one the Indian Space Research Organization has taken on to achieve a unique role on the international launch market for large rideshare missions that are among the most cost-effective ways to send a small satellite into orbit.

CartoSat-2E, only identified as a 'CartoSat-2 Series Satellite' by the Indian Space Research Organization, is India's sixth CartoSat Earth-imaging satellite and the third to launch in a period of 12 months, reinforcing the country's Earth-imaging capabilities both for military reconnaissance and civilian applications. Standing 2.4 meters tall, CartoSat-2E hosts a sharply-eyed instrument comprising a 70-centimeter telescope and a pair of detector modules to collect panchromatic black-and-white imagery with a ground resolution of 0.6 meters and multi-band color images at a two-meter resolution.

Per reports, CartoSat-2E will be directly operated by India's defence forces in a program that is designed for dual-use of all its satellites to enable quick-tasking and rapid revisit capability for both, civilian and military users. The last three CartoSat craft went into lower orbits than their predecessors to further boost their image resolution and bring out more detail of features on Earth's surface, whether man made or natural. Specific applications of CartoSat data are found in cartography, urban planning, environmental monitoring, resource management and disaster relief.

Riding shotgun with CartoSat-2E were a total of 30 secondary payloads of fifteen countries with four non-CubeSat small satellites separating after the primary payload followed by a flood of CubeSats. According to information received by the Indian Space Research Organization from the various sensors on the rocket, all payloads were released as planned – though it might take hours for all to check in with ground stations and possibly weeks to work through the cataloging process.

PSLV, India's flagship orbital launch vehicle since the 1990s, enjoyed a smooth 28-hour countdown ahead of a 9:29 a.m. local time liftoff on Friday on its 40th mission.

Burning 1,600 Kilograms of propellant per second, PSLV thundered off powered by its massive solid-fueled third stage and four of its six Solid Rocket Boosters, the other two joining 25 seconds into the flight to increase the rocket's thrust to 803 metric ton-force. As is customary for Sun Synchronous Missions out of Satish Dhawan, PSLV flew a Dogleg Trajectory – initially heading south east to clear the island of Sri Lanka before making a guided turn to fly south west to reach the planned orbital inclination of 97.44 degrees.

The ground-lit boosters burned out at T+50 and dropped away 20 seconds later, followed by the air-lits 92 seconds into the flight after each of the 13-meter long SRBs burned through 12.2 metric tons of propellant. The core stage consumed 138 metric tons of propellants in one minute and 50 seconds when thrust tailed off followed by the pyrotechnic separation of the 20-meter long stage and the ignition of the 81,500-Kilogram-force Vikas engine on the second stage 68 Kilometers in altitude.

PSLV entered closed loop steering during the second stage burn to dynamically adjust its flight profile based on measured navigation data. The two fairing halves dropped away two minutes and 37 seconds into the mission when PSLV had passed 120 Kilometers in altitude and the hypergolic-fueled second stage handed off to PS3 at 261 seconds with the third stage lighting up its solid rocket motor moments later to generate 25 metric tons of thrust for a 113-second burn.

Upon third stage tail-off, the vehicle completed two minutes of coasting before dropping the PS3 and firing up the twin L-2-5 engines of PS4 that fired for 456.4 seconds with a thrust of 1,500 Kilogram-force, burning over two metric tons of self-igniting propellants. Injection was reported to be on target, into an orbit a little over 500 Kilometers in altitude from wh ere CartoSat-2E will maneuver to a precise 505-Kilometer Sun Synchronous Orbit.

Impressive camera views came from the fourth stage as propulsive flight ended and the delicate satellite separation sequence began, starting with CartoSat-2E that was followed in close succession by NIUSAT and CE-Sat 1. The fourth stage then re-oriented for the release of the remaining two micro satellites and 26 CubeSats. Deployment of all 31 satellites was confirmed when the PS4 arrived within range of an Antarctica tracking station, marking another successful day for ISRO.

With the release of its 31 passengers, the PS4 stage headed off on an extended mission of ten orbits or 15 hours to demonstrate it is capable of executing advanced multi-orbit missions.

ISRO carried out its first multi-orbit mission last year and efforts are underway to prove PSLV can deliver satellites to more than two orbits in one go in order to make the launcher even more attractive on the international market that will see quite a number of new vehicles come on line in the coming years, including new additions as well as seasoned pros like Soyuz that are now available for rideshare missions.

Per the extended mission plan, PS4 will complete a pair of six-second main engine firings followed by a longer burn of 40 seconds to deliver detailed performance data with particular focus on the start-up characteristics of the twin engines and propellant management over extended coast phases. The three orbital maneuvers are expected to lower the fourth stage's perigee altitude to around 350 Kilometers.

Early this morning, a launch vehicle of the Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO has launched a total of 31 satellites into space. The PSLV-C38 launch carried the CartoSat-2E earth observation satellite as its main payload next to a number of small satellites. The Dutch nanosatellite company ISIS – Innovative Solutions In Space (ISISpace) was responsible for manifesting a total of 23 satellites on this particular launch.

Since 2007, ISIS has been carrying out numerous successful launch campaigns for small satellites through its launch services subsidiary Innovative Space Logistics (ISL) and it is one of the leading players in the small satellite launch business. During this ISILaunch19 launch campaign, ISISpace engineers were responsible for the integration of the 20 CubeSats onto the PSLV launch vehicle, using satellite deployer systems and sequencing electronics developed in Delft. In the last couple of weeks an ISISpace team took care of the final integration of all hardware on the launch vehicle at the launch site in India, resulting in the successful launch of this morning.

Launching a record breaking 101 satellites on the PSLV-C37 earlier this year, ISISpace continuous to bolster its launch services track record with this PSLV-C38 launch. Multiple launches to low earth orbit are scheduled for the second half of 2017 across multiple launch vehicles.

Among these 23 satellites, there are 8 CubeSats that will complement and complete the QB50 constellation for upper atmospheric research (www.qb50.eu). This project, sponsored by the European Commision's FP7 is managed by the Von Karmann Institute from Belgium and ISISpace has been one of the consortium partners of QB50 since the start. The CubeSats launched by ISISpace into polar orbit will work together with the CubeSats deployed from the International Space Station in May.

The ISILaunch19 manifest also includes several payloads that were initially scheduled for a launch on a Falcon 9 mission through Spaceflight's Sherpa mission, a launch that was significantly delayed due to various factors. Such a re-manifesting of payloads clearly shows the added value of the ISILaunch Services of ISISpace to serve the CubeSat community, offering access-to-space flexibility towards customers of launch services by operating across multiple launch vehicles and missions in parallel.

По информации вуза, спутники будут исследовать нижние слои атмосферы. Как сказал представитель факультета физики Вильнюсского университете Людас Тумонис, запуск нескольких небольших спутников вместо одного большого проводится из-за того, что разряженная в термосфере атмосфера останавливает большие спутники. "Благодаря использованию нескольких десятков небольших спутников в различных точках замеряют различные параметры термосферы. Если один спутник выйдет из строя — миссия сразу завершается, а если выйдут из строя несколько, как я их называю, миниатюрных спутников — мы сможем продолжать исследование. Кстати, все эти спутники вместе взятые стоят как один большой спутник", — приводятся в сообщении слова Тумониса.

LituanicaSat-2 участвует в международной миссии QB50 по изучению земной термосферы, находящейся на высоте 200-380 км. В проекте задействовано более 30 наноспутников. Однако литовский аппарат примечателен прежде всего тем, что заправлен экологическим топливом. "Конструкторы наноспутников - университеты, малые предприятия - сталкиваются с проблемой топлива для своих аппаратов. Как правило, в космической отрасли используют гидразин - ядовитое, канцерогенное вещество", - отметил руководитель проекта Витянис Бузас. Для заправки двигателей спутника гидразином необходимы дорогостоящая инфраструктура, скафандры.
Литовская экологическая разработка эту проблему снимает. "Наш наноспутник весом 3 кг представляет собой прямоугольник длиной 30 см. Аппарат оснащен ракетным микродвигателем, работающим на так называемом "зеленом" химическом топливе", - рассказал Бузас.
Оснащение микродвигателем позволит Lituanica Sat-2 пробыть на околоземной орбите значительно дольше, чем это удалось двум малым литовским спутникам, запущенным в 2014 году. На орбите они проработали всего по нескольку месяцев. Ожидается, что Lituanica Sat-2 пробудет в космосе до трех лет.

Литва символически вступила в "космический клуб" в феврале 2014 года. На околоземную орбиту тогда с Международной космической станции были выведены два литовских наноспутника - LitSAT-1 и LituanicaSat-1. Каждый из них представлял собой созданный учеными и студентами миниатюрный прибор в виде куба с гранью около 10 см и весом около 1 кг. LitSAT-1 продержался в космосе около трех месяцев, LituanicaSat-1 - более 150 дней. После входа в атмосферу спутники сгорели.

A cubesat developed by the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) in Changsha, China was one of the passengers on India's PSLV-C38 rocket launched early on Friday.

NUDTSat (https://upload.qb50.eu/detail/CN06/), a 2 kilogram 2-unit CubeSat, is part of the part of the QB50 (https://www.qb50.eu/) constellation, an international network of 50 CubeSats for multi-point, in-situ measurements in the lower thermosphere and re-entry research.

NUDTSat was placed into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km, and has an expected lifetime of 3 months.

The cubesat's science unit is a Ion/Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS), for sampling particles in the upper atmosphere.

Space debuts

Among the 30 nanosatellites aboard Friday's PSLV-C38 launch are Aalto-1 (https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/a/aalto-1), a Finnish student sat, and D-Sat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-8bof2XJtw&feature=youtu.be), a 3U CubeSat developed by D-Orbit of Italy, which will perform a controlled re-entry as part of experiments it hopes could lead to solutions to the growing issue of space debris.

The others come from countries, including India, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, US and the UK, with a total mass of 955 kg, including the 700 kg Cartosat-2E.

Cartosat-2E is an advanced remote sensing satellite with a multispectral optical imager and panchromatic camera, which will be used for urban planning, services, infrastructure development, traffic management and disaster management.

In February another Chinese cubesat, Chen Jiayong-1 (http://gbtimes.com/china/chinese-cubesat-hitches-ride-indias-record-breaking-launch-104-satellites) (aka DIDO-2), was among the record 104 satellites (https://www.space.com/35709-india-rocket-launches-record-104-satellites.html) successfully put into orbit by India's PSLV-C37.

Sky and Space Global Ltd (ASX: SAS, "Sky and Space Global" or the "Company" ) is pleased to share the latest update on the 3 Diamonds nano-satellites and confirm that good progress continues, with around 500 telemetry passes having been made, generating more than 60 hours of telemetry.

Global First for SAS
Inter-satellite links between the Diamonds have been tested and verified with data rates of up to 2 Mega Symbols per Second. This marks a major achievement, not only for Sky and Space Global and its shareholders, but for the global telecommunications and satellite industries as it is the first time ever that inter-satellite communication of nano-satellites has been performed with satellites spread hundreds of kilometres apart.

The satellites have been identified and catalogued as the Diamonds Red, Green and Blue and all are in position, pointing towards Earth. In addition, the Customer Satellite Link is now working and ready for Ground-to-Space tests, beginning in about two weeks. This all signals positive progress for the constellation and the 3 Diamonds remain on track to commence commercial demonstrations within a few weeks and will immediately at this point be able to start generating revenues for Sky and Space Global, and the SAS customers using the 3 Diamonds network.

The In-Orbit Testing plan will continue in the coming weeks and Sky and Space Global will regularly update the market on the progress.

ЦитироватьBreakthrough Starshot has taken the first step towards their grand plans to one day send spacecraft to Alpha Centauri. On June 23, the $100 million initiative to send light-propelled spacecraft to our nearest star sent the tiniest-ever satellites into orbit.

An Indian rocket carried six of these miniature satellites, called Sprites, into space. Two of them are attached to the sides of other, larger satellites: the Latvian Venta satellite and the Italian Max Valier satellite. Once communications are established, the Max Valier satellite will release the other four Sprites to orbit on their own.

Each Sprite is a four-gram square of circuit board measuring 3.5 centimetres to a side. Despite their small size, the Sprites carry a lot of instruments. Each one has a computer processor, solar panels, a magnetometer, a gyroscope, and a radio for communicating with researchers on Earth.                             

So far, researchers have only gotten a signal from one of the two Sprites hitching a ride on the larger satellites. The rest have not been released yet because the Max Valier satellite has not made contact with its mission controllers, possibly due to problems with its radio antenna. Without a functioning radio antenna, the satellite will be unable to receive any command to release its cargo.

Zac Manchester, the Harvard researcher leading the project, views even that one signal as a triumph. "We were really just trying to get them up there and communicate with them," he says. "It's the first time that a spacecraft on this size scale has worked."

It's still a long way from where its progeny may someday travel: our neighboring star system Alpha Centauri, 24 trillion miles away. The dream is for Sprite-like spacecraft to take close-up images and collect data - maybe even detect gases produced by alien life.

The little Sprite could someday help answer the big questions of life in the Universe: Are we alone? Are there habitable worlds out there? If so, can we reach them?

"But it's very good first step. It's proof of concept," said Breakthrough Starshot director Pete Worden, former director of NASA Ames Research Center, from his office on the valley's storied Sand Hill Road. "It's very exciting."

Sprite is the brainchild of Zac Manchester, whose Kickstarter "KickSat" campaign at Cornell University raised the first funds to develop the concept. This month, he joins the faculty of Stanford's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His arrival at Stanford is expected to accelerate the chip satellite effort.

Sprite weighs just four grams, lighter than a quarter. It has its own solar panel, communication capabilities and sensors.

Such tiny spacecraft are possible thanks to rapid advances made in the semiconductor industry, according to Manchester. Most of the features of a traditional spacecraft can be integrated onto a chip-scale device. Sprite is built using the same devices and processes used in the consumer electronics industry.

Sprite has siblings - several Sprites were launched on June 23 - but they've gone incommunicado. They don't fly on their own; they're piggybacking on two satellites.

The one researchers hear is broadcasting a standard radio signal, charging its batteries with sunlight. News came of its signal late last month, via a Cornell ground station. (Amateurs can also listen in; Manchester's KickSat offered a design and instructions for a low-cost and portable Sprite receiving station. Consisting of a hand-held antenna, low-noise amplifier, low-cost USB radio receiver dongle, it can be built for about $200, plus a PC to run the software.)
