АФИНЫ, 24 фев — РИА Новости, Геннадий Мельник. Строительство греческого спутника связи Hellas Sat 3 находится на завершающей стадии, он будет запущен 28 июня с космодрома во Французской Гвиане, сообщило министерство цифровой политики, телекоммуникацией и информации Греции.
После вывода на орбиту спутник будет контролироваться греческими инженерами на предприятии Hellas Sat в Коропи.
Новый спутник будет на 50% мощнее, чем его предшественник Hellas Sat 2, и станет самым большим европейский орбитальным спутником.
В пятницу министр цифровой политики Никос Паппас посетил французское предприятие ThalesAlenia Space в Каннах, где строится спутник. По словам министра, спутник уже прошел все испытания.
В январе Греция заявила о решении вернуться в космос — министерство цифровой политики, телекоммуникаций и информации Греции создает Греческое космическое агентство. Агентство создается в форме акционерной компании, которая будет называться "Национальный центр космической деятельности" (EKDE) и призвана заполнить пробелы в этой области.
EKDE будет заниматься арендой, на основе частных экономических критериев, имеющихся передатчиков, которые не будут использованы правительством Греции (в военной, телекоммуникационной и другой деятельности). Важное значение имеет и использование результатов научно-исследовательской и научной деятельности в космосе, например, для гражданской защиты, мониторинга Земли, предотвращения и тушения пожаров, незаконного строительства и так далее, считают в министерстве.
EKDE будет связан с основными греческими и международными научно-исследовательскими центрами, объединит исследования для греческих предприятий, облегчит использование результатов деятельности для греческой оборонной промышленности и греческой армии.
У Греции раньше был спутник, принадлежавший греческой телекоммуникационной организации OTE. Спутник Hellas Sat 2 был запущен в мае 2003 года, через него идет вещание на страны Европы, Ближнего Востока и Северной Африки. Но в 2013 году спутник продан арабской компании за 208 миллионов евро. Решение продать первый и единственный национальный спутник было неоднозначно встречено в Греции. Некоторые СМИ писали, что "немцы в ОТЕ под покровом ночи продали единственный греческий спутник и лишили страну ее собственной спутниковой связи", имея в виду, что крупнейшим акционером ОТЕ является Deutsche Telecom (ей принадлежит 40% акций).
Как ранее заявлял министр цифровой политики Никос Паппас, Греция за последние 20 лет внесла сотни миллионов евро для участия в европейских космических программах, таких, как "Галилео", но не может использовать результаты научной и исследовательской деятельности, а также ресурсы Европейского космического агентства.

GSAT-17
GSAT-17 is a communication satellite configured around I-3K extended bus with a lift-off mass of about 3,425 kg and 6 kW power generation capacity. The satellite's transponders include C-band, Lower Extended C-band and Upper Extended C-band transponders. The spacecraft also carries CxS and SxC MSS transponders as well as DRT & SAS&R payloads.

The satellite is scheduled to be launched during end of June 2017 by Ariane-5 launch vehicle from French Guiana.

Launch preparations with Soyuz, Ariane 5 and Vega keep Arianespace on track for 12 missions in 2017

Arianespace's objective of performing 12 launches in 2017 is backed by a high level of activity at the Spaceport in French Guiana, where mission preparations, payload checkout and launch vehicle hardware are in process for upcoming flights with Soyuz, Ariane 5 and Vega.

The basic three-stage Soyuz launcher for Flight VS17 is raised into position in the ELS launch zone, where it was fitted with the SES-15 payload and Fregat upper stage.
 
For the company's next liftoff, a medium-lift Soyuz is now in the Spaceport's ELS launch zone, fitted with its SES-15 telecommunications satellite payload. Undergoing the countdown for a morning departure on Thursday, May 18, this launch is designated Flight VS17 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – signifying the 17th mission with the Russian-built workhorse vehicle since it entered service at the Spaceport in 2011.

Flight VS17 will mark Arianespace's fifth mission so far in 2017, following two launches with the heavy-lift Ariane 5, and one each utilizing Soyuz and the light-lift Vega.

Preparing for the next two Ariane 5 flights
Elsewhere at the Spaceport, the next Ariane 5 has moved fr om the Launcher Integration Building to the Final Assembly Building, wh ere a dual payload of the Viasat-2 and Eutelsat E172B telecommunications satellites will be integrated. This mission is designated Flight VA237, denoting the 237th flight with an Ariane launcher since the family of European-built vehicles began Spaceport operations in 1979.
Activity also has begun for the subsequent Ariane 5 launch, VA238, which will loft the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S relay satellite and the GSAT-17 telecommunications spacecraft for the Indian Space Research Organisation.

GSAT-17 arrived in French Guiana this week aboard a chartered cargo jetliner that landed at Cayenne's Félix Eboué Airport. Separately, elements for Flight VA238's Ariane 5 launch vehicle were delivered to Kourou's Pariacabo port by the MN Toucan roll-on/roll-off transport ship, completing a trans-Atlantic sea voyage that also carried launcher components for Arianespace's next Vega mission.

US$1.6bn commitment to Global Xpress
Three Global Xpress (GX) satellites – the Inmarsat-5 constellation – deliver seamless, globally available, high-speed broadband connectivity that spans the world.
Global commercial service introduction (CSI) was achieved for Global Xpress (GX) during December 2015 following the successful launch of I-5 F1 in December 2013; I-5 F2 in February 2015; and I-5 F3 in August 2015.
As part of Inmarsat's ongoing US$1.6bn programme commitment, a fourth Global Xpress satellite (I-5 F4) has completed construction and testing by Boeing in California, and is likely to be launched in mid-2017 in order to provide additional GX capacity.
GX operates in the part of the radio spectrum known as the Ka-band and is the first of its kind to offer true global mobile VSAT-type services, fr om a single operator. Market research shows there to be an estimated US$1.9 billion market opportunity in the maritime, energy and government sectors.
Global Xpress is expected to deliver no less than $500m of additional revenues by the fifth anniversary of the global launch of commercial GX services.

Connectivity for smartphones, tablets and laptops
Global Xpress delivers higher speeds through more compact terminals at a lower cost than traditional VSAT services, using spectrum that is far less congested. It enables more bandwidth-intensive video applications, alongside standard applications at a much faster speed.
Terminals will come in mobile, portable and fixed formats for our customers on land, at sea and in the air. They will support connectivity for smartphones, tablets and laptops.
It's superfast and reliable, but Global Xpress is much more than a fatter pipe.
A new platform for advanced applications
Our vision is to create a rich application and content environment. Together with Cisco, we've developed a new platform for advanced applications such as TV on demand, tele-presence and collaborative working.
And because Global Xpress is an all-IP environment, it enables point-and-click capability for a simple and consistent user experience worldwide.
For extra resilience, Global Xpress is complemented by our standard L-band broadband services on the Inmarsat-4s, which deliver 99.9 per cent overall network availability. Ours is the only multi-band satellite network of its kind.

Upgrade path to higher bandwidth
And while Global Xpress complements our existing L-band services, it can also provide an upgrade path to existing customers who have higher bandwidth needs, and affords them the opportunity to migrate over time to the new GX services.
Inmarsat Global Xpress is transforming today's piecemeal approach to high-speed broadband satellite communications by bringing reliable, end-to-end global connectivity fr om a single trusted supplier.
We also remain well-positioned to continue growing our core L-band franchise. With three generations of spacecraft in operation, we continue to invest for the future here too.

New satellites to extend our L-band network
We intend to maintain our L-band network, and will purchase new satellites for this network on a rolling procurement basis, which means they'll be replaced over time rather than in a concentrated investment period.
This additional capacity brought by Global Xpress will also free us up to enhance our existing L-band portfolio – including BGAN, FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband, and our global handheld satellite phone range, IsatPhone.
We see a future wh ere mobile satellite services are delivered through a combination of L-band and Ka-band satellites, harnessing the strengths of each to offer an unrivalled portfolio of solutions based on speed, price and portability.

In-flight passenger WiFi via S-band
The European Aviation Network (EAN), a revolutionary new hybrid satellite and air-to-ground network developed by Inmarsat in partnership with Deutsche Telekom,  promises aviation customers a high quality broadband service when flying over Europe.
With European air traffic forecast to double over the next decade, the EAN is designed to grow capacity to match accelerating demand. Initially combining Inmarsat's multi-beam S-band satellite with approximately 300 Deutsche Telekom ground towers, it's easily and cost-effectively scalable.
Passengers flying over Europe will be able to use their personal devices for internet browsing, video streaming, gaming and other online services, with unmatched high capacity, low-latency performance. EAN's robust and ultra-compact technology makes it uniquely qualified for the European airspace, wh ere aircraft size, flight density and frequent aircraft manoeuvring are challenging to broadband satellite-only systems.
It has been made possible by the European Commission's S-band Application Programme. This regulatory framework provides an ideal platform to roll-out the network across the continent.
As well as delivering value-added in-flight connectivity services to EU businesses and consumers, the aviation network is expected to foster high-value R&D, encourage product and service innovation, and bring new jobs and economic growth.
The cost of the satellite programme, estimated at US$200-250 million, will be shared with Hellas-Sat, which will gain exclusive rights to a companion Ku-band payload deployed on the satellite.

The build-up process for Flight VA238's Ariane 5 at the Spaceport began with erection of the core cryogenic stage and its positioning over the launch table inside the Launcher Integration Building (photos left and center), followed by the first of two solid booster rollouts for mating with the core stage (photo at right).

The Spaceport's ability to support Arianespace's launch cadence by enabling multiple missions to be readied in parallel is demonstrated once again with the two Ariane 5s currently undergoing processing in French Guiana.   
                            
Inside the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, the Ariane 5 for Flight VA238 is taking shape for a June 28 liftoff with a dual-satellite payload: the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S multi-mission relay satellite for Inmarsat and Hellas-Sat; and the Indian Space Research Organisation's GSAT-17 communications spacecraft.
This heavy-lift vehicle's build-up process began with the positioning of its core cryogenic stage over one of two mobile launch tables for Ariane 5. It cleared the way for the transfer of two large solid propellant boosters fr om their remote preparation zone to the Launcher Integration Building, where they will be mated to the Ariane 5's core stage.

The basic build-up will then be completed with integration of Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage and vehicle equipment bay, followed by checkout and functional tests.

The GSAT-17 satellite for Arianespace Flight VA238 undergoes pre-launch processing in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility.
 
Performing this entire phase of launcher integration activity is Arianespace's parent company and Ariane 5 prime contractor: Airbus Safran Launchers.
Flight VA238's launcher will then be ready for transfer to the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, wh ere it will receive the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S and GSAT-17 satellite passengers.
The Final Assembly Building currently is occupied by the Ariane 5 for Arianespace Flight VA237, which is set for a June 1 liftoff with the ViaSat-2 and Eutelsat E172B telecommunications satellites. This Ariane 5 is installed on the second mobile launch table used by Arianespace's heavy-lift vehicles, and awaits its dual-passenger payload integration.

Cannes, May 24, 2017 – Europasat, the "Inmarsat S-band / Hellas Sat 3" telecommunication satellite, has been shipped to the Kourou launch pad in French Guyana to be launched by Ariane 5 rocket in June. This condominium satellite for Inmarsat and Hellas Sat will provide Mobile Satellite Services (MSS), Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) and Broadcast Satellite Services (BSS).

The payload designed for Inmarsat will deliver an S-band service across all 28 member states of the European Union, plus Norway and Switzerland, while the FSS/BSS Hellas Sat payload will cover Europe, Middle East and Southern Africa.

The Inmarsat S-band payload will offer enhanced mobile services across Europe through an integrated network, which combines S-band satellite services with a LTE (Long Term Evolution)-based ground network covering operated by Inmarsat's partner Deutsche Telekom. Inmarsat S–band will support Inmarsat's European Aviation Network, an integrated satellite and ground network that combines the best of both worlds and will offer airline passengers robust, high capacity inflight broadband in a small, light-weight solution.

The Hellas-Sat 3 payload will deliver DTH (Direct To Home) and Telecom services in Europe, Middle East and South Africa, maintaining and expanding Hellas-Sat's business reach with additional capacities.

Built on the Spacebus 4000 C4 platform from Thales Alenia Space, "Inmarsat S-band / Hellas Sat 3" will deliver a multi-beam mission in S-band as well as a powerful Ku/Ka-Band mission of 45 Ku and 1 Ka transponders for Hellas-Sat. The satellite will weigh about 5.8 tons at launch and will offer payload power of about 12.7 kW. « Inmarsat S-band / Hellas Sat 3 » will be positioned at 39° East.

GSAT-17 "opens up" during testing ahead of this Indian satellite's June 28 launch on Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission

The next launch of Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 5, scheduled for June 28 from the Spaceport in French Guiana, will carry a dual payload: the Indian Space Research Organisation's GSAT-17 communications satellite and the Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN multi-mission relay satellite for Inmarsat and Hellas-Sat.

In advance of the liftoff, GSAT-17 has been undergoing ground-based checkout activity, including the deployment of its solar panels and antenna reflectors in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility's S5C large clean room hall.

Such deployment testing is a routine procedure with Indian satellites prior to launch. For the solar panels' extension, an overhead latticework helped support the solar panels as they opened to their full length – simulating the zero gravity conditions in space. Upon validating the proper operation, Indian technicians stowed the panels against the satellite in their final liftoff configuration. Afterwards, the satellite's two antenna reflectors were similarly deployed and restowed during activity in the clean room.

Launching aboard the upcoming Ariane 5 mission – designated Flight VA238 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – GSAT-17 will be deployed second in the flight sequence, following Ariane 5's release of Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN. GSAT-17 is based on the I-3K extended spacecraft bus, with a liftoff mass set at 3,425 kg. The satellite's relay payload is composed of Ku-band, Normal C-band and Extended C-band transponders. The satellite also carries CxS and SxC transponders as well as DRT and SAR transponders.

THE LAUNCH
Arianespace will launch the joint satellite from the ELA-3 launch zone at Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

The spaceport's location close to the equator at 5.3° North latitude makes it ideally situated for missions into geostationary orbit. Launching near the equator reduces the energy required for orbit plane change manoeuvres, saving fuel and so enabling an increased operational lifetime.

Inmarsat's S-band satellite will be carried on an Ariane 5 rocket, Arianespace's workhorse heavy-lift launch vehicle, which stands at 50.5 metres tall.

Following lift off, the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) teams from Thales Alenia Space (TAS), Inmarsat and Hellas-Sat will be on standby at the TAS Satellite Control Centre in Cannes, France waiting for the first telemetry acquisition, expected approximately 39 minutes into flight, which will be received from the Mingenew Ground Station in Australia.

A very long night is then in store for the spacecraft analysts and engineers, who will carry out a series of satellite health checks and manoeuvres, including sun pointing acquisition and solar array partial deployment.

After five days, apogee boost manoeuvres will be executed to reach geostationary orbit, when the solar arrays and antennas will be fully deployed and payload in-orbit tests carried out from our Nemea Satellite Control Centre in Greece. After in-orbit test completion, satellite control will remain in Nemea, with specific S-band EAN payload commands sent from Inmarsat's Satellite Control Station at our London HQ.

EUROPEAN AVIATION NETWORK

The European Aviation Network (EAN) is the world's first integrated satellite and air-to-ground service dedicated to providing a true inflight Wi-Fi experience for passengers flying across the busy skies of Europe.

Inmarsat satellite connectivity will be combined with a 4G LTE-based ground network covering approximately 300 sites, operated by partner Deutsche Telekom. Aircraft will switch automatically between satellite and terrestrial connectivity using an onboard network communicator for optimal service delivery.

Designed specifically for high-traffic flight paths and busy airport hubs, and with International Airlines Group already signed up as launch customer, EAN will transform the passenger experience for millions of people who have been cut off from fast, reliable and consistent broadband access when they fly.

For its seventh launch of the year, and the fourth Ariane 5 mission in 2017 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, Arianespace will orbit two payloads: Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN, a "condosat" for Inmarsat and Hellas Sat; and GSAT-17 for the Indian space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).

With this 290th mission performed by its family of launchers, Arianespace is at the service of three major satellites operators: Hellas Sat, Inmarsat and ISRO.

The launch will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.
The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Monday, Juin 26, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Arianespace will orbit Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN, a "condosat" for Hellas Sat and Inmarsat.
Its Hellas Sat 3 payload, the second Hellas Sat satellite, will deliver DTH (direct-to-home) and telecom services maintaining and expanding Hellas Sat business reach.

Hellas Sat (member of the Arabsat Group) is a premium satellite operator, offering services in Europe, the Middle East and South Africa from the orbital position of 39 East. It was established in August 2001 and owns and operates the Hellas Sat 2 high-power satellite.

Hellas Sat 3 will deliver in-orbit back-up DTH and telecom services in its designated coverage areas, maintaining and expanding Hellas Sat business reach with additional capacity and bringing video content in High Definition and Ultra High Definition format to the covered regions. The FSS/BSS coverage zones are Europe, the Middle East and Sub Saharan African countries, including a cross-trap service between Europe and South Africa.

The Inmarsat S EAN (European Aviation Network) payload is the ninth Inmarsat satellite to be launched by Arianespace.

Inmarsat is the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services. Since 1979, Inmarsat has been providing reliable voice and high-speed data communications to governments, enterprises and other organizations, with a range of services that can be used on land, at sea or in the air.

The most advanced aviation passenger Wi-Fi experience anywhere in the world and provide Europe's aviation industry with an opportunity to build global leadership in aviation passenger Wi-Fi.

Inmarsat S EAN, the satellite component of the new network, will be placed into geostationary orbit over Europe, providing continent-wide S-band connectivity.

Built by Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, France using a Spacebus 4000C4 platform, Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN will be the 149th Thales Alenia Space satellite to be orbited by Arianespace.
GSAT-17 will be the 21st satellite from ISRO to be launched by Arianespace.

Since the launch of the Apple experimental satellite on Ariane Flight L03 in 1981, Arianespace has won 87% of the geostationary orbit launch contracts that the country has opened to non-Indian launch systems.

Built by ISRO, GSAT‑17 will strengthen ISRO's current fleet of 17 operational telecom satellites. It will provide continuity of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) in Normal C and Upper Extended C bands.
It also will provide Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) in S-band and Data Relay and Search & Rescue services in UHF band.

During integration activity leading up to today's launch readiness review, Ariane 5's payload fairing containing Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN and the SYLDA dispenser system is positioned and lowered over GSAT-17 – which is installed atop the launcher's core cryogenic stage.

Arianespace's fourth heavy-lift Ariane 5 to take flight in 2017 is "go" for its Wednesday evening liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana, sustaining the launch services company's mission cadence this year with its full launcher family – which also includes the medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

Approval for the June 28 mission – designated Flight VA238 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – was granted today after the Launch Readiness Review, which confirmed the "go" status of Ariane 5, its Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT-17 satellite payloads, the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

The total payload carried on Flight VA238 is approximately 10,177 kg., with the mission lasting 39 minutes from liftoff to deployment of the two spacecraft passengers.

One launch at the service of three operators
Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN is positioned as the upper passenger on Ariane 5, and will be released first during the flight, followed by GSAT-17's deployment from the launcher's lower payload position.
Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN is a two-payload "condosat" produced by Thales Alenia Space for Hellas Sat and Inmarsat. Once in orbit, the Hellas Sat 3 component will deliver direct-to-home and telecom services to maintain and expand Hellas Sat's business reach; while the Inmarsat S EAN component provides the satellite portion of Inmarsat's new European Aviation Network.

Built using the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000C4 platform, Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN has a liftoff mass of 5,780 kg.

GSAT-17 was manufactured by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to expand this national space agency's current fleet of 17 telecommunications satellites. Arianespace has delivered another Ariane 5 to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, clearing the way for tomorrow's heavy-lift mission with a pair of satellites: Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT-17.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, Ariane 5 today completed its transfer fr om the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere payload integration occurred – to the dedicated ELA-3 launch complex. With this rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for a June 28 liftoff at the start of a 1-hr., 17-min. launch window opening at 5:59 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Tomorrow's mission is designated Flight VA238, and it has an estimated payload performance of 10,177 kg. – a total that factors in Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT-17, plus the dual-satellite dispenser system and integration hardware. Both passengers are to be deployed to geostationary transfer orbit during a 39-min. flight sequence.

Continuing the Arianespace launch tempo
Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN is the mission's upper passenger and will be released first in the flight sequence at 28 min. after liftoff. Produced by Thales Alenia Space, it is a two-payload "condosat" to be operated by Hellas Sat and Inmarsat. Once in orbit, the Hellas Sat 3 component will deliver direct-to-home and telecom services to maintain and expand Hellas Sat's business reach; while the Inmarsat S EAN component provides the satellite portion of Inmarsat's new European Aviation Network.

GSAT-17, to be deployed from Ariane 5's lower passenger position, was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to strengthen its current fleet of 17 telecommunications satellites. The spacecraft's separation will occur approximately 41 min. after liftoff.

As the fourth heavy-lift Ariane 5 flight so far in 2017, tomorrow's launch will continue a busy year of mission activity for Arianespace's full family of launchers, which also has included two flights performed with the medium-lift Soyuz and one using the lightweight Vega.

Arianespace's launch team in French Guiana rolled an Ariane 5 booster to its launch pad Tuesday and readied the rocket for liftoff Wednesday with an Inmarsat satellite to connect airline passengers over Europe and an Indian communications craft.

Slated for its fourth launch of the year, the Ariane 5 is set to deploy a novel communications satellite with an Inmarsat S-band mobile broadband payload tailored for airborne customers and television broadcasting transponders for the Greek operator Hellas-Sat.

The so-called Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space in France, will ride in the upper position inside the Ariane 5 rocket's Swiss-made payload fairing. Its co-passenger on Wednesday's launch is GSAT 17, an Indian communications and data relay spacecraft.

Ground teams at the European-run space base in Kourou, French Guiana, rolled the nearly 180-foot-tall (55-meter) Ariane 5 to its ELA-3 launch pad Tuesday morning. Mounted on a mobile launch platform, the rocket was towed along rail tracks for the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey fr om the spaceport's final assembly building to the launch zone.

The European launcher arrived at the launch pad around midday, and crews spent the afternoon connecting the launch table to the pad's propellant, electrical and telemetry systems. The launch team also planned to fill the Ariane 5's high-pressure helium tank Tuesday.

The final countdown will commence at 0936 GMT (5:36 a.m. EDT) Wednesday, with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2059 GMT (4:59 p.m. EDT; 5:59 p.m. French Guiana time). Wednesday's launch window extends until 2216 GMT (6:16 p.m. EDT; 7:16 p.m. French Guiana time).
Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 should begin at 1026 GMT (6:26 a.m. EDT).

Workers will also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for Wednesday's launch will be loaded into the rocket's computer.

The launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1621 GMT (12:21 p.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It will take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage will commence at 1741 GMT (1:41 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will occur at 1731 GMT (1:31 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 1944 GMT (3:44 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison 2 minutes, 19 seconds after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 52 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 3 degrees.

The release of the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN is scheduled for 28 minutes, 17 seconds, after liftoff. The rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned a few minutes later.

GSAT 17 will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 41 minutes, 47 seconds.

Wednesday's mission will mark the 94th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since it debuted in 1996. It will be the seventh Arianespace launch so far this year, divided among a roster of launchers that include the Ariane 5, the lightweight solid-fueled Vega, and commercial flights of the Russian Soyuz booster.

The two satellites carried into orbit by the Ariane 5 will maneuver in the coming days to their final orbits more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator. The spacecraft, using on-board thrusters, will circularize their orbits and extend their solar panels and antennas before entering service.
Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN is heading for a geostationary position at 39 degrees east longitude for a planned 17-year mission.

Developed in a cost-sharing "condosat" arrangement by Hellas-Sat and Inmarsat, the 12,742-pound (5,780-kilogram) satellite was originally contracted to launch on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket in 2016. But delays in SpaceX's development of the heavy-lift launcher have pushed its maiden flight until at least late this year, prompting Inmarsat and Hellas-Sat in December to switch to an Ariane 5 launch.

"It's been a real win-win for Inmarsat and Hellas-sat to develop this project together," said Massimiliano Ladovaz, Inmarsat's vice president of space segment and system architecture. "The spacecraft that was manufactured by a very competent team at Thales Alenia Space in Cannes and Toulouse is a very good example of a 'condosat,' wh ere two payloads for two different customers share the same bus.

"We are extremely happy with the very fast integration cycle that allowed us to be ready to launch in such a fast turnaround," Ladovaz said, referring to the short time between the satellite's addition to the Ariane 5 manifest and Wednesday's scheduled launch. "All the work was done in less than seven months."

Inmarsat will use its S-band capacity on the spacecraft for WiFi services for airline passengers across Europe, with coverage in all 28 European Union member states, plus Norway and Switzerland. The company calls it the European Aviation Network.

The aeronautical communications project is a partnership between Inmarsat and Deutsche Telekom, which provides a network of approximately 300 4G ground sites, allowing a computerized controller aboard aircraft to automatically switch between ground and satellite WiFi service as needed.

"The S-band satellite is actually the first of its kind because it's going to be part of a hybrid integrated service, integrated meaning between space — a SATCOM component — and a terrestrial component," said Michele Franci, Inmarsat's chief technology officer. "It is going to be deployed over Europe, and it's going to provide, specifically, aero connectivity services for regional jets for airlines that work in Europe."

Coupling satellite- and ground-based broadband for airline passengers will help meet high demand over heavily-trafficked air routes near major European cities.

"If you go around the big hubs, like Frankfurt, London-Heathrow, or Paris, between 8 and 10 in the morning, or between 4 and 6 in the evening, you have very dense activity, so the amount of service that is required ... exceeds what you can do from one single satellite," Franci said in an interview with Spaceflight Now last month. "You would need a pretty expensive deployment. While the satellite allows you to go wide, and to cover areas wh ere service is patchy, by integrating these two (ground and satellite) capabilities, we expect to provide pretty high quality passenger connectivity."

Franci called the S-band aviation network "complementary" to Inmarsat's Global Xpress fleet, which beams broadband services to airplanes, ships and other on-the-go customers around the world. While Global Xpress is suited to remote regions, the European Aviation Network is designed to serve clients in congested parts of Europe.

The Hellas-Sat 3 portion of the spacecraft will replace coverage currently offered by the Hellas-Sat 2 satellite launched by an Atlas 5 rocket in May 2003. Hellas-Sat, a Greek subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Arabsat, owns 44 Ku-band transponders and a single Ka-band transponder on the satellite.

Harry Iordanou, Hellas-Sat 3 project manager, said the satellite "will be Hellas-Sat's second satellite at 39 degrees east delivering in-orbit, direct-to-home, and telecom services over its coverage areas in Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan African countries.

"Its activation will not only maintain but also expand Hellas-Sat's business reach with additional capacity, while bringing video content in high and ultra-high definition format," Iordanou said.
The satellite's initial orbit-raising maneuvers and deployments will be controlled from Thales Alenia Space's center in Cannes, while in-orbit testing and commercial operations will be managed from a control site in Nemea, Greece.

The 7,665-pound (3,477-kilogram) GSAT 17 satellite also launching Wednesday is the heaviest Indian-built spacecraft ever built, according to Prakasha Rao, GSAT 17 launch campaign manager at the Indian Space Research Organization.

Outfitted with C-band broadcast transponders and an S-band payload designed for mobile services, GSAT 17 will join 17 current satellites in India's communications network. According to ISRO, GSAT 17 also hosts a payload to relay meteorological data and has a search and rescue support mission.

GSAT 17 is designed for a 15-year mission, and will enter service in geostationary orbit 93.5 degrees east longitude following several weeks of orbit-raising and checkouts.

The launch of GSAT 17 caps a busy June for ISRO after the successful inaugural orbital test flight of India's GSLV Mk.3 rocket June 5, the largest launcher in India's history, and the liftoff of 31 satellites on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on June 23.

An Ariane 5 rocket will make its fourth flight of the year Wednesday, hauling two communications satellites into orbit for Inmarsat, Hellas-Sat and India's space agency.

The nearly 180-foot-tall (55-meter) launcher will blast off from Kourou, French Guiana, at 2059 GMT (4:59 p.m. EDT; 5:59 p.m. French Guiana time) with the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT 17 communications satellites.

Made in France by Thales Alenia Space and in India by the Indian Space Research Organization, respectively, Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN and GSAT 17 will ride aboard the Ariane 5 in a dual-payload stack. The larger of the two satellites, Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN, will deploy first, followed by separation of GSAT 17 around 42 minutes after liftoff.

T-minus 3 hours, 10 minutes. The Ariane 5 rocket's first stage, known by the French acronym EPC, is currently being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The second stage, or ESC-A, should also be receiving the same mix of liquid propellants. The first stage Vulcain 2 engine and the upper stage HM7B engine both consume the super-cold fuel.

The cryogenic propellant will be gradually pumped inside the rocket to maintain proper levels as the fuel evaporates over the rest of the countdown.

The Ariane 5's supply of cryogenic liquid helium, used to pressurize the rocket's propellant tanks, was loaded aboard the launcher Tuesday.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Airbus Safran Launchers in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Airbus Safran Launchers in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launches two multi-mission satellites for fixed and mobile services

The 80th consecutive success for Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 5 lofted two satellites tonight, delivering new capacity for use in the distribution of TV and video content, telecommunications services, mobile satellite services, data relay, along with coverage of search and rescue missions.

Orbited by Arianespace Flight VA238 from the Spaceport in French Guiana were a so-called "condosat" composed of two payloads for Hellas Sat and Inmarsat, along with a spacecraft for the Indian Space Research Organisation.

On its fourth mission at the service of Arianespace this year, the Ariane 5 had a payload lift performance estimated at 10,177 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit, maintaining the company's sustained launch pace in 2017.

Riding as the upper passenger on Flight VA238 was Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN, which integrated two relay payloads.

The payload for Hellas Sat 3 will expand this company's business reach by providing direct-to-home (DTH) TV broadcast and telecommunications services, as well as the distribution of high-definition (HD) and ultra-high definition (UHD) video content in Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. These fixed satellite services (FSS) and broadcast satellite services (BSS) include a cross-strap service between Europe and South Africa.

Christodoulos Protopapas, the CEO of Hellas Sat, congratulated Arianespace on successfully orbiting the Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN spacecraft, and said he was looking forward to the launch of his company's next satellite – Hellas Sat 4 – scheduled on an Arianespace mission in 2018.

Keeping airline passengers connected while aloft
Also integrated on the Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN satellite is a relay payload for a system developed by Inmarsat with Deutsche Telekom to offer high-speed, high-capacity Wi-Fi connections for airline passengers anywhere in the world.

Inmarsat is specialized in mobile satellite communications, and the first customer for this airborne connectivity is the International Airlines Group (AIG), which has begun equipping its aircraft and aims to have 90 percent of its short-haul fleet complete by early 2019.

Inmarsat Chief Technology Officer Michele Franci thanked Arianespace as part of the European effort that will bring cabin connectivity to passengers across Europe. "This satellite was riding on one of Europe's best success – Ariane," he added.

Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN, built by Thales Alenia Space
Weighing an estimated 5,780 kg. at liftoff, Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN was produced by Thales Alenia Space using its Spacebus 4000C4 platform. With the satellite's successful launch tonight, Arianespace has now orbited a total of 149 spacecraft built by the company – continuing a long-time partnership.

Bertrand Maureau, Executive Vice President – Telecommunications at Thales Alenia Space, acknowledged Ariane 5's mission performance this evening, and noted that Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN was the fourth satellite from his company launched so far this year by Arianespace.

Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN also marks key milestones between Arianespace and the two operators: it is the ninth satellite launched at the service of Inmarsat, and the first orbited for Hellas Sat.

The dual-payload condosat has a total coverage area that includes spans Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan African regions, and will operate from a 39-deg. East orbital slot.

21 satellites launched for ISRO
GSAT-17 was the 21st spacecraft orbited by Arianespace for the Indian Space Research Organisation, extending a relationship that dates back to 1981 with launch of the APPLE experimental satellite.

Built by ISRO/ISAC (the ISRO Satellite Centre) utilizing the Standard I-3K satellite bus, GSAT-17 – with a mass at liftoff of 3,476 kg. – will expand the Indian national space agency's current fleet of 17 telecommunications satellites. It is to provide continuity of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) in Normal C and Upper Extended C bands, as well as Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) in S-band and Data Relay and Search & Rescue services in UHF band – operating from a final orbital position of 93.5 deg. East.

Dr. K. Sivan, Director of ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, described Ariane 5's launch this evening as "glorious," adding the Indian space organization's "congratulations, complements and thanks to Arianespace for a wonderful job."

Next up for Arianespace: Vega Flight VV10
Arianespace's next mission is set for August 1, utilizing the lightweight vehicle Vega on a mission to Sun-synchronous orbit. Its two passengers will be OPTsat-3000 for the Italian Ministry of Defense, along with VenµS for the French and Israeli space agencies.

Arianespace has successfully launched the Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN "condosat" – composed of two payloads for operators Hellas Sat and Inmarsat; as well as the GSAT-17 satellite for India's space agency, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).

The launch took place on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:15 p.m. (local time), from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America).

Hellas Sat, a major satellite operator and subsidiary of Arabsat Group, provides communications services in Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.

The Hellas Sat 3 payload, the second for the operator Hellas Sat and the first to be orbited by Arianespace, will expand the company's business reach by providing direct-to-home (DTH) TV broadcast and telecommunications services, as well as the distribution of high-definition (HD) and ultra-high definition (UHD) video content in Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

These fixed satellite services (FSS) and broadcast satellite services (BSS) will include a cross-strap service between Europe and South Africa.

Arianespace has another Hellas Sat satellite – Hellas Sat 4 – in its order book. This spacecraft will further increase the operator's service availability.

Inmarsat S EAN is the ninth payload orbited by Arianespace for Inmarsat – a company specialized in global mobile satellite communications – since the launch of MARECS A in 1981.

The Inmarsat S EAN (European Aviation Network) payload comprises the space segment of a new hybrid system, integrating satellite-based services with a complementary ground network developed by Inmarsat's strategic partner Deutsche Telekom.

The EAN network, which will commence commercial services in the second half of 2017, will deliver a truly seamless inflight WiFi service for Europe's airlines and their passengers.

The International Airlines Group (IAG), is confirmed as the launch customer for the new service.  IAG has begun equipping its aircraft and aims to have 90% of its short haul fleet complete by early 2019.

Arianespace, a partner of reference for ISRO since 1981
Following the launch of GSAT-18 on October 5, 2016, GSAT-17 is the 21st satellite orbited by Arianespace for the Indian space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). Arianespace has won nearly 90% of all Indian geostationary satellite launch contracts open to competitive bidding.

GSAT-17 will join ISRO's fleet of 17 operational telecommunications satellites. It will provide both fixed (FSS) and mobile (MSS) satellite services, and also handle data transmission and search & rescue (SAR) services.

It carries on ISRO's mission of using space to support the development of the Indian sub-continent by launching satellites of all types (Earth observation, telecommunications, educational program broadcasting, science, navigation, etc.).

Arianespace's order book includes another ISRO satellite to be launched: GSAT-11.

80th success in a row for Ariane 5

Today's Flight VA238 mission was the 80th successful Ariane 5 launch in a row, a string of successes that started in 2003. Over the last 14 years, the Ariane 5 launcher has orbited 160 satellites for both commercial and government customers, exceeding 677 metric tons.

This enviable track record reflects the exceptional reliability and availability of Arianespace's heavy-lift launcher, and confirms its status as the most reliable launcher on the commercial market today.

Including this mission, Arianespace has now carried out seven launches over a period of five months and a day in 2017, sending 10 satellites into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and one into a non-GTO orbit, with a cumulated payload weight of nearly 45 metric tons. Arianespace plans five more launches in 2017: three by Ariane 5 and two by the Vega light launcher.

Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of the two satellites, Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace, said: "Arianespace is proud to serve our European and Indian customers with this fourth successful Ariane 5 launch of the year. The Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, southern France, using a Spacebus 4000 C4 platform.
The Hellas-Sat 3 payload will provide secure DTH TV broadcast and telecommunications services using 47 (BOL)/44(MOL) transponders in Ku band and one Ka-band transponder.
The Inmarsat S EAN payload, operating in S-band for Inmarsat S EAN, will provide communications services for in-flight connectivity via the European Aviation Network (EAN), which combines space and ground segments to provide robust and reliable high-speed services to European passengers.
Positioned at 39° East, its coverage zone spans Europe, the Middle East and sub-Saharan African regions.
The satellite had a liftoff mass of 5,780 kg., and it offers a design life exceeding 15 years.

Hauling two heavy satellites into orbit, Europe's Ariane 5 rocket checked off its fourth successful flight of the year on Wednesday, the 80th success in a row for the workhorse launcher in a streak that has been going since 2002. Hidden under the rocket's large fairing were the shared Inmarsat-S/HellasSat-3 satellite for TV distribution and aeronautical connectivity and India's GSAT-17 that will reinforce the country's communications infrastructure.

Making its third launch in eight weeks, the 55-meter tall Ariane 5 blasted off fr om the ELA-3 launch site at the Guiana Space Center at 21:15 UTC – rumbling off powered by its cryogenic core stage and twin boosters that did most of the work over the first two minutes of the rocket's trip across the Atlantic Ocean, heading straight east to reach a nearly ideal Geostationary Transfer Orbit with an inclination of three degrees. After the boosters dropped away 64 Kilometers in altitude, Ariane 5 relied on its core stage for another six and a half minutes before handing over to the ESC-A upper stage tasked with the final push into orbit via a 16-minute burn.

Having reached an injection speed of 9.3 Kilometers per second, Ariane 5 traded the power of its main engine for the precision of its orientation thrusters to send its two passengers on the way. First up was the Inmarsat-S/HellasSat-3 satellite that made its way into orbit atop the Sylda adapter that enables Ariane 5 to boost two sizeable spacecraft into orbit. Once the Sylda was dropped off, the way was clear for GSAT-17, the 21st Indian satellite lifted by Arianespace. The two were the 600th and 601st satellites launched by the French-based launch services provider.

Inmarsat-S/HellasSat-3 is a shared satellite by London-based mobile communications provider Inmarsat and Greek operator HellasSat, born out of Inmarsat's EuropaSat Project that stalled in 2009 and was revived five years later with plans for the condominium satellite. Per the agreement, the two project participants are splitting the cost for the satellite platform and its launch while each pays for their respective payload.

Based on Thales Alenia's Spacebus-4000C4 satellite platform, the craft stands 5.2 meters tall and weighs in at 5,780 Kilograms, featuring four large deployable antenna reflectors plus two parabolic antennas on the craft's Earth-facing deck.

The Inmarsat payload hosts a powerful S-Band terminal broadcasting in the 2GHz frequency band cleared for use through the European S-Band Application Process.

Three large S-Band beams cover the entire European Union plus Norway and Switzerland, delivering in-flight connectivity to airline passengers as part of Inmarsat's European Aviation Network that comprises Inmarsat-S as central space segment, a network of around 300 4G ground sites and airborne terminals on aircraft that automatically switch between capacity from ground stations and the satellite – creating a system that should provide users with high-quality, robust Internet services during their time aloft.

The approach of a combined SATCOM and terrestrial system was chosen to meet high demand over heavily-trafficked air routes near Europe's major cities and aeronautical hubs. In essence, the satellite is in charge of covering wide areas for cruising planes while the ground-based system delivers high capacity to localized areas of increased demand.

The Hellas Sat segment of the satellite carries 47 Ku-Band and one Ka-Band transponders. The Ku-Band payload is primarily geared towards TV distribution with coverage over Europe to serve the company's current user base that is presently served by a capacity from the 14-year old HellasSat-2 with 44 Ku-Band and one Ka-Band transponder. Two additional coverage zones over the Middle East and Southern Africa will allow the ArabSat subsidiary to tap into new markets with HD and Ultra-HD services.

The multi-beam Ka-band payload is commissioned to provide capacity for broadband and business networks.

Destined for an orbital location of 39 degrees East, the condo satellite was initially planned to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in 2016, but persistent delays to the heavy-lifter's debut mission prompted a switch to Ariane 5. Inmarsat lauded Arianespace's ability to provide an extremely fast turnaround of seven months between the satellite's addition to Ariane's manifest and launch.

India's GSAT-17 weighed in at 3,477 Kilograms and continued a long-standing partnership between the Indian Space Research Organization and Arianespace upon which ISRO relied for the majority of satellites that could not be launched from India. With recent successes by India's GSLV rocket family, ISRO hopes to launch more and more satellites from Indian soil and eventually end its reliance on outside launch services providers altogether.

Designed for a 15-year service life, GSAT-17 is tipping the scales as India's heaviest satellite to date, employing the I-3K satellite bus that is fitted with 38 C-Band transponders and two pairs of S/C and C/S up-down transponders for mobile connectivity. The satellite will ensure a continuation of operational services while also providing extension coverage to satisfy an ever growing demand for telecommunications services. Augmentation is provided for existing telecommunication, television and VSAT services. Also installed on the satellite is one dedicated transponder for Data Relay (DRT) and Search and Rescue (SAR) services.

The Ariane 5 VA238 launch campaign was characterized as very smooth following arrival of the launch vehicle components in mid-May and the two satellites by the end of last month. Operations continued running smoothly when the integrated Ariane 5 was moved to the ELA-3 launch complex on Tuesday for final preparations for an 11-hour and 43-minute countdown that picked up at 9:36 UTC on Wednesday.

After power-up at L-10 hours, Ariane 5 went through detailed checkouts that provided a clean bill of health to the vehicle in order for the propellant loading process to be started. Tanking picked up on the first stage around 4 hours and 38 minutes prior to launch and 50 minutes later on the second stage to load Ariane 5 with 184 metric tons of supercold Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen Propellant. Standing fully fueled, Ariane 5 underwent final preparatory steps for its fast-paced automatic countdown sequence while the two passengers made their transition to battery power for the ride into orbit.

Ariane 5 entered the T-7-minute Synchronized Sequence after a brief delay due to ground systems readiness with computers taking over control to move the vehicle through a long list of steps to transition Ariane 5 to an autonomous launch configuration. The launcher finished topping up its tanks and entered pressurization, switched to internal power, and configured its Flight Control System for blastoff with handoff to the vehicle just seconds before liftoff.

The trusted Vulcain 2 engine came to life when clocks reached zero, soaring to a launch thrust of nearly 100 metric ton force under close supervision by computers that ensured the engine was up and running before committing to flight via the ignition of the boosters at 21:15:07 UTC.

Jumping off from its launch pad on the edge of the Amazon jungle, Ariane 5 had a thrust equivalent to ten Airbus A380s running at full power. Riding on pillars of fire and smoke, Ariane 5 pitched and rolled onto a due easterly departure path for a quick flight across the Atlantic Ocean, heading towards the sunset.

The twin EAP boosters did most of the work in the initial flight phase, contributing the majority to Ariane's total launch thrust of around 1,420 metric-ton-force – helping accelerate the launcher beyond the speed of sound just 49 seconds into the flight. Ariane 5 encountered Maximum Dynamic Pressure shortly after T+1-minute when passing 13 Kilometers in altitude.

The two boosters, each consuming some 237 metric tons of propellant, finished their job at T+2 minutes and 19 seconds, helping accelerate Ariane 5 to over 2 Kilometers per second. Burnout of the boosters was sensed by their declining chamber pressure, triggering pyrotechnics to separate the boosters and separation motors to push them away from the still-firing core stage 65 Kilometers in altitude.

Now only relying on its Vulcain engine, Ariane 5 continued towards orbit with a vacuum thrust of 136,600 Kilogram-force, tasked with accelerating the vehicle by another five Kilometers per second before handing over to the upper stage. Passing 112 Kilometers in altitude at T+3 minutes and 16 seconds, Ariane 5 split open its Swiss-built payload fairing and separated the 17-meter long halves as aerodynamic forces were no longer a danger to the payloads. Separation of the fairing revealed the Inmarsat/Hellas Sat spacecraft while GSAT-17 remained hidden under the Sylda adapter for the duration of powered flight.

The first stage exhausted its supply of cryogenics eight minutes and 52 seconds into the flight when it shut down its Vulcain 2 engine, having reached a sub-orbital speed of 6.95 Kilometers per second. Four seconds later – passing through 180 Kilometers in altitude – the 30.5-meter core stage dropped away and cleared the ESC-A upper stage to take over powered flight duties.

The 6,400-Kilogram-force HM-7B engine of the second stage fired up just past T+9 minutes on a burn of 16 minutes and two seconds to provide another 2.4 Kilometers per second of delta-v to achieve the planned GTO injection speed of 9.33km/s. Initially focusing on building speed, Ariane 5 passed its minimum altitude of 156 Kilometers 15 minutes into the flight, from then on headed uphill to drop the satellites off in a highly elliptical orbit.

Ariane 5 aimed for an optimized Geostationary Transfer Orbit of 250 by 35,786 Kilometers at an inclination of only 3 degrees – taking advantage of French Guiana's low latitude plus surplus performance on the Ariane 5 to shave another few degrees off the inclination.

Ariane 5 was carrying a total payload mass of 10,177 Kilograms on Wednesday, successfully accomplishing its planned orbital injection 25 minutes after lifting off when the vehicle had already reached Africa's west coast.

After a smooth climb, Ariane 5 traded the power of its main engine to the precision of its attitude control thrusters for the ballistic phase designed to carefully deploy the satellites on safe orbital paths.

Springs pushed the heavy Inmarsat-S/HellasSat-3 on its way 28 minutes after launch, embarking on ten days of orbit raising and several weeks of commissioning, handled by Thales Alenia Space before the two operators can begin offering services through the spacecraft. ESC-A moved into a different attitude for the jettisoning of the Sylda Adapter at T+30 minutes to reveal the GSAT-17 satellite for its separation, coming after another nine minutes of coasting. GSAT-17 will complete several firings of its Liquid Apogee motor to take up station at 93.5° East from wh ere it can cover the Indian subcontinent.

For Ariane 5, the mission ended with the usual twenty-minute passivation sequence that included spinning the stage up, venting down all tanks and powering off onboard systems.

Wednesday's launch marked the 238th flight of an Ariane rocket in a program dating back to 1979, it was the 94th for an Ariane 5 and the 63rd in the ECA configuration. For Arianespace, the next mission is coming up on August 2 when a Vega rocket will lift a French-Israeli environmental monitoring satellite and a high-resolution imaging satellite for the Italian Defence Ministry. Ariane 5 will next see action in late August when lifting the Intelsat 37e and BSat-4 communications satellites.

India's GSAT-17 Communication Satellite Launched Successfully
Today (June 29, 2017), GSAT-17 became India's third communication satellite to successfully reach orbit in the past two months.  GSAT-17 was launched in the early morning hours using the European Ariane 5 Launch Vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana. The 3477 kg GSAT-17 carries communication payloads in C-band, Extended C-band and S-band for providing various services to the country.  The satellite also carries equipment for meteorological data relay and satellite based search and rescue services.

After its lift-off at 0245 hrs (2:45 am) IST and a flight lasting about 39 minutes, GSAT-17 separated from the Ariane 5 upper stage in an elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) with a perigee (nearest point to Earth) of 249 km and an apogee (farthest point to Earth) of 35,920 km, inclined at an angle of 3 degrees to the equator.

ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka took over the command and control of GSAT-17 immediately after its separation from the launch vehicle. Preliminary health checks of the satellite revealed its normal functioning.

In the coming days, orbit raising manoeuvres will be performed to place GSAT-17 satellite in the Geostationary Orbit (36,000 km above the equator) by using the satellite's propulsion system in steps.

During the final stages of its orbit raising operations, the two solar arrays and both the antenna reflectors of GSAT-17 will be deployed.  Following this, the satellite will be put in its final orbital configuration.  GSAT-17 will be positioned at its designated orbital slot in the geostationary orbit and will be co-located with some of the Indian operational geostationary satellites. Later, it is planned to turn on the communication payloads of the satellite. After the successful completion of all the in-orbit tests, GSAT-17 will be ready for operational use.

Новая миссия стала для Arianespace седьмой по счету с начала 2017 года. "Этот старт является восьмидесятым успешным запуском Ariane 5 за 14 лет", - говорится в заявлении главы Arianespace Стефана Израэля. Спутники были выведены на орбиту спустя 39 минут после старта ракеты с космодрома.
Первый из них - GSAT-17 - принадлежит Индийской организации космических исследований (ISRO). Он предназначен для предоставления телекоммуникационных услуг на территории Индии. Его стартовая масса составляла почти 3,5 тонны. Ожидаемый срок службы - 15 лет.
На спутник установлены транспондеры для предоставления услуг телевещания и VSAT. Кроме того, на аппарате размещено оборудование для мобильной спутниковой связи, а также транспондер для ретрансляции данных и обеспечения поисково- спасательных операций. Контракт на его запуск с Arianespace был подписан в ноябре 2015 года.
Второй спутник связи, выведенный на орбиту, - Hellas Sat 3/Inmarsat S EAN. Он находится в собственности британского оператора Inmarsat и греческой компании Hellas-Sat. Он предназначен для предоставления телекоммуникационных услуг для стран Европы, Среднего Востока и Африки.
Изначально запуск этого аппарата планировался ракетой-носителем Falcon Heavy компании SpaceX. Однако из-за неготовности ракеты для запуска спутника в необходимые сроки было принято решение о переносе его на Ariane 5. Контракт с Arianespace был подписан в декабре 2016 года.

29 June 2017: Inmarsat (LON: ISAT), the world's leading provider of global mobile satellite communications, has confirmed the successful launch of its S-band satellite (Inmarsat S EAN) for the European Aviation Network (EAN). The launch is a key milestone for Inmarsat's unique EAN service, which is on course to commence commercial service in the second half of 2017.

The Inmarsat S-band satellite, built by France's Thales Alenia Space, was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket by Arianespace at 22:15 BST/17:15 EDT from Kourou in French Guiana. Following satellite separation at 22:43 BST/17:43 EDT, telemetry from the satellite was acquired by Inmarsat's Mingenew Ground Station in Western Australia at 22:50 BST/17:50 EDT.

The launch team from Inmarsat and Thales Alenia Space will now raise the satellite into its geostationary orbit over Europe and the Middle East, at which point the spacecraft will deploy its solar arrays and reflectors, and undergo rigorous payload testing.

Inmarsat's EAN is the world's first dedicated aviation connectivity solution to integrate space-based and ground-based networks to deliver a seamless WiFi experience for airline passengers throughout Europe.  Inmarsat's strategic partner, Deutsche Telekom, is well advanced in the construction of the complementary ground network, which will be fully integrated with the S-band satellite to deliver a truly seamless service for Europe's airlines and their passengers.

Mandates have been won from leading airlines worldwide including Avianca, Qatar Airways, Deutsche Lufthansa Group, International Airlines Group, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

11 September 2017: Inmarsat today confirmed that the European Aviation satellite has successfully completed its in-orbit tests and now stands ready to support inflight internet services when the European Aviation Network (EAN) goes 'live' later this year.

The satellite, built by France's Thales Alenia Space, was launched by Arianespace in June this year.

EAN is the world's first dedicated aviation connectivity solution to integrate space-based and ground-based networks to deliver a seamless WiFi experience for airline passengers throughout Europe.  Inmarsat's strategic partner, Deutsche Telekom, is well advanced in the construction of the complementary ground network, which will be fully integrated with the S-band satellite to deliver a truly seamless service for Europe's airlines and their passengers.

International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes world renowned airline brands such as British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, is the launch customer for the new service.

The successful completion of spacecraft and payload testing of the S-band satellite further underlines the momentum that Inmarsat is building in the high-speed broadband inflight connectivity (IFC) market, which the company entered in October 2016 with the commercial introduction of GX Aviation, a worldwide service powered by its Ka-band, Global Xpress (Ka-band) satellite constellation.

Inmarsat now has over 1,200 aircraft installations expected under signed contracts for its IFC services. Mandates have been won from leading airlines worldwide including Avianca, Qatar Airways, Deutsche Lufthansa Group, International Airlines Group, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle.
