Also present at the Spaceport are Ariane 5 components for Flight VA236, which were delivered earlier this month by one of two sea-going roll-on/roll-off ships used for the transportation of launch vehicles from Europe to French Guiana. The launch of this Ariane 5 is scheduled for the second half of March with two telecommunications satellites that will be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit.

Maintaining Arianespace's sustained launch pace in 2017, activity is continuing for the company's next flight – an Ariane 5 dual-payload mission on March 21 with the SGDC and KOREASAT-7 telecommunications satellites, to be performed fr om the Spaceport in French Guiana.

The heavy-lift vehicle was delivered to Arianespace earlier this month by production prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers, with the Ariane 5's transfer from the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building – wh ere it underwent the basic buildup – to the Final Assembly Building for integration of its two payloads.

In parallel, the two satellites have been progressing through their own pre-flight preparations, with both now in the Final Assembly Building. As the mission's upper payload, SGDC was installed on Ariane 5's SYLDA dispenser system, and then encapsulated in a long version of the launcher's ogive-shaped payload fairing. Separately, KOREASAT-7 was integrated atop Ariane 5, to be followed by positioning of the SGDC/SYLDA/payload fairing combination atop it.

 

Flight VA236: Arianespace's fourth mission in 2017

The Ariane 5 mission with SGDC and KOREASAT-7 will be Arianespace's second flight during the month of March, and its fourth so far in 2017. Designated Flight VA236, it follows the year-opening launches of a lightweight Vega on March 6 with the Sentinel-2B Earth observation spacecraft, the February 14 mission using an Ariane 5 to orbit the SKY Brasil-1 and Telkom 3S relay satellites, and January 27's launch of a medium-lift Soyuz to orbit the Hispasat 36W-1 telecommunications platform.

During integration activity in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, Ariane 5's payload fairing is lowered into position over the SGDC satellite, which is installed on the SYLDA dispenser (photo at left). In the photo at right, KOREASAT-7 is secured atop Ariane 5's core section.

 Both satellites for Flight VA236 were built by Thales Alenia Space, with the mission's total payload lift performance set at 10,289 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit.

SGDC is the first Brazilian government satellite, as well as the initial spacecraft to be launched by Arianespace for Visiona Tecnologia Espacial S.A. – the SGDC prime contractor, responsible for the program management, overall system integration and end-to-end communication. This dual-use (civil and military) relay platform will enable the implementation of a secure satellite communications system for the Brazilian government and armed forces, while also reducing the digital divide in Brazil.

The SGDC spacecraft will be operated and controlled by Telebras, a Brazilian telecommunication company managed by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication.

 

Spacebus platforms for Flight VA236's two satellite payloads

Based on the Spacebus 4000C4 platform, the SGDC platform carries 57 transponders in Ka- and X-band. It will have a liftoff mass estimated at 5,735 kg., and is to be positioned at an orbital slot of 75 deg. West.

The KOREASAT-7 passenger on Flight VA236 is designed to provide improved throughput and wider coverage over Korea, Philippines, Indochina, India, and Indonesia. Equipped with Ku-band and Ka-band transponders, it will have a liftoff mass of approximately 3,680 kg. and is built on an upgraded Spacebus 4000B2 platform. The satellite's added steerable Ka-band capacity is designed to support further demand in relay services.

Once in its orbital slot of 116 deg. East, KOREASAT-7 will be operated by KT SAT – a wholly-owned subsidiary of KT Corp., which is the largest telecom/media service provider in South Korea and the country's sole satellite service provider.

 Arianespace to launch two telecom satellites for Brazil and South Korea

For its fourth launch of the year, and the second Ariane 5 mission in 2017 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, Arianespace will orbit two satellites: SGDC for VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A. on behalf of the Brazilian operator Telebras S.A., and KOREASAT-7 for the South Korean operator ktsat.

This mission, designated Flight VA236 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, will be the seventh all-Thales Alenia Space mission, as both satellites were built by this manufacturer.

The launch will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, March 17, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

SGDC (Geostationary Satellite for Communications and Defense) is the first satellite for the operator Telebras S.A. to be launched by Arianespace, performed within the scope of a contract with SGDC prime contractor Visiona Tecnologia Espacial S.A.

This Brazilian government program has three main objectives:

• Reduce Brazil's digital divide by providing high-quality Internet services to 100% of the country territory as part of the National Broadband Plan
• Provide sovereign and secure means for Brazilian government and defense strategic communications
• Acquire critical technologies for the Brazilian space industry, enabling the industry to take increasingly important roles in the future Brazilian space programs.
  

Positioned at 75° West, with its 57 Ka- and X-band transponders, the SGDC is a multi-spot beam HTS (high-throughput satellite) capable of delivering more than 57 Gbps over the Brazilian territory.

The SGDC will be operated and controlled by Telebras S.A., a Brazilian telecommunication company controlled by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication; and the Defense Ministry.

As SGDC prime contractor, VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A. is responsible for program management, overall system integration and end-to-end communication.

SGDC was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, France using the reliable Spacebus 4000C4 platform.

KOREASAT-7 is the third KOREASAT satellite to be launched by Arianespace for ktsat, following KOREASAT-3 and KOREASAT-6, launched in September 1999 and December 2010, respectively.

ktsat, a wholly-owned subsidiary of KT Corp. – the largest telecom/media service provider in South Korea – is the country's sole satellite service provider. Since the establishment of the Kumsan Satellite Center (Teleport) in 1970, ktsat has been the national leader in telecommunications and broadcasting services. It currently operates three satellites.

KOREASAT-7 will provide a full range of video and data applications, including Internet access, direct-to-home broadcasting (DTH), government communications and connectivity for VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks.

Positioned at 116° East, KOREASAT-7 is designed to provide higher throughput and extended coverage over Korea, the Philippines, the Indochinese Peninsula, India and Indonesia. Its added Ka-band capacity, with steerable beams, will enable it to meet increased demand.

KOREASAT-7 was built by Thales Alenia Space in Toulouse and Cannes, France, using a Spacebus 4000B2 platform.

 Ariane 5 is "go" for Arianespace's March 21 mission with SGDC and KOREASAT-7

 Arianespace's dual-payload mission to orbit telecommunications satellites for Brazil and South Korea has been given the go-ahead for a March 21 liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana, carrying the SGDC and KOREASAT-7 relay platforms.

The approval came at the completion of today's Launch Readiness Review, which confirmed the "go" status of Ariane 5, its two payloads, the Spaceport launch infrastructure and the network of flight trajectory tracking stations.

This confirmation followed the completion of Ariane 5's integration inside the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, performed under the responsibility of Arianespace.

For its fourth launch of the year, and the second heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission in 2017, the two passengers were built by Thales Alenia Space – marking the seventh time Arianespace has performed a dual-payload flight with both satellites built by this spacecraft manufacturer.

 

A 10-metric-ton payload for Ariane 5

Next week's mission, designated Flight VA236 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, is scheduled during a launch window that opens at 5:31 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon – local time in Kourou, French Guiana – and extends to 8:20 p.m. (20:31-23:20, Universal Time, UTC).

The nominal duration of Flight VA236 from liftoff to separation of the satellites is 36 minutes, 46 seconds, with Ariane 5's total payload lift performance on this mission to geostationary transfer orbit estimated at approximately 10,289 kg.

SGDC is the mission's upper passenger and has a liftoff mass estimated at 5,735 kg., with KOREASAT-7 installed as the lower passenger with a mass at liftoff of approximately 3,680 kg.

Spacebus 4000-series platforms for both satellite payloads

Built with Thales Alenia Space's Spacebus 4000C4 platform, SGDC (Geostationary Satellite for Communications and Defense) is the first satellite that Arianespace is launching for Telebras S.A., performed within the framework of a contract with SGDC prime contractor VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A.

Operating from an orbital position of 75 deg. West with Ka- and X-band transponders, the dual-use SGDC will provide sovereign and secure means for Brazilian government and defense strategic communications, as well as high-quality Internet services to 100 percent of the Brazilian territory as part of the National Broadband Plan.

KOREASAT-7 was produced using a Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000B2 platform, and will be the third KOREASAT satellite launched by Arianespace for ktsat – a wholly-owned subsidiary of KT Corp., which is the largest telecommunications/media service provider in South Korea.

Once positioned at 116 deg. East, KOREASAT-7 will provide a full range of video and data applications, including Internet access, direct-to-home broadcasting (DTH), government communications and connectivity for VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks.  Its coverage area encompasses Korea, the Philippines, the Indochinese Peninsula, India and Indonesia.

 Today's scheduled transfer of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle from its Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone has been delayed by 24 hours due to a social movement at the Spaceport in French Guiana. This activity will take place on March 21 if the situation permits.

As a result, Arianespace's Flight VA236 – which will deliver the SGDC and KOREASAT-7 satellites to geostationary transfer orbit – is now scheduled for liftoff on March 22 within the following launch window:

Arianespace VA236: Launch delay
 
Due to a social movement, it was not possible to carry out today's scheduled transfer of the launch vehicle from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building (BAF) to the launch zone. 
                         
As a result, Arianespace has decided to postpone the transfer by 24 hours, with operations resuming tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21, 2017, if the situation permits.

The launch vehicle, as well as its SGDC and KOREASAT-7 satellite payloads, have been placed in a stand-by mode and are being maintained in fully safe conditions.

A work stoppage at the Ariane 5 rocket's launch base in South America prevented rollout of the booster to the launch pad Monday, pushing back the liftoff of two communications satellites for Brazil and South Korea until at least Wednesday.

The fully-assembled launcher was set to roll out of the final assembly building Monday morning for the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey to the ELA-3 launch zone at the Guiana Space Center. Arianespace officials were aiming for a launch attempt Tuesday evening.

But the rollout did not happen due to a "social movement" at the spaceport, according to Arianespace. Officials blamed the postponement on a strike among a segment of the workforce at the Guiana Space Center, which is managed by CNES, the French space agency, with support from the European Space Agency and numerous European contractors.

The space center is situated on the northeastern coast of South America near Kourou, French Guiana.

Labor issues at the spaceport have pushed back launches before, most recently in 2011 when the operators of radar tracking systems in French Guiana went on strike. It was not clear which workers were on strike Monday.

The rollout is now scheduled for Tuesday, officials said, with launch on Wednesday at 2031 GMT (4:31 p.m. EDT; 5:31 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends until 2320 GMT (7:20 p.m. EDT).

Once at the launch pad, the rocket and its mobile platform will be connected to ground supplies of cryogenic propellant, power, and telemetry networks ahead of the final countdown Wednesday.

The launch will mark the second Ariane 5 flight of the year, and Arianespace's fourth launch of 2017. It will be the 92nd flight an Ariane 5 rocket since the heavy-lifted debuted in 1996.

Arianespace said the launcher and its two satellite payloads "have been placed in a stand-by mode and are being maintained in fully safe conditions."

Two communications satellites, named SGDC and Koreasat 7, are inside the Ariane 5 rocket's payload fairing awaiting launch.

SGDC will provide strategic communications for the Brazilian government and military services and beam broadband services across all of the country's territory to give Internet access to remote and under-served communities.

Koreasat 7, owned by South Korea's KTsat, will provide a range of video and data services over Korea, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, India and Indonesia.

Both satellites were manufactured by Thales Alenia Space of France.

The launch an Ariane 5 rocket with Brazilian and Korean communications satellites that was set for this week has been postponed indefinitely after protesters blocked access to the French Guiana spaceport.

The heavy-lift launcher was scheduled to lift off Tuesday, but widespread protests and a strike by workers from one of Arianespace's subcontractors prevented the planned rollout of the Ariane 5 to its launch pad Monday.

Arianespace hoped to reschedule the launch for later in the week, but the company announced Thursday that the commercial flight will remain grounded until further notice.

"The evolution of the situation does not permit the restart of operations for the Ariane 5 launch scheduled for today," Arianespace said in a statement Thursday.

The fully-assembled Ariane 5 rocket, topped by the SGDC and Koreasat 7 communications satellites for the Brazilian government and South Korea's commercial operator KTsat, are secured inside the spaceport's final assembly building, officials said.

Arianespace chief executive Stephane Israel tweeted Wednesday that officials will set a new target launch date as soon as possible.

The delay will likely cause Arianespace to push back the following launch from French Guiana. Once the Ariane 5 takes off, a Russian-made Soyuz rocket is next in line at the tropical space base, slated to loft the Boeing-built SES 15 communications satellite into orbit to provide in-flight Internet connectivity for airline passengers, and support government, networking and maritime customers across North America.

SES 15 also hosts a payload for the FAA's Wide-Area Augmentation System to enhance airline navigation and safety across the United States.

Liftoff of SES 15 was scheduled for April 4, but it takes nearly two weeks to reconfigure the French Guiana spaceport and downrange tracking stations between launches.

Workers from Endel Engie, the company tasked with driving the Ariane 5 rocket from its assembly building to the launch pad at the Guiana Space Center, went on strike Monday and prevented the booster's rollout. A union representative told French media that the strike was called to reopen wage negotiations.

The Endel Engie strike was part of a wider net of protests this week across French Guiana, a lightly-populated French department on the northeastern coast of South America. France Guyane, a local newspaper, reported Thursday that most businesses in Cayenne, the territory's capital, were closed and large aircraft were prohibited from landing at the city's airport.

Some schools in French Guiana were also closed this week, and an Air France flight from Paris to Cayenne turned around over the Atlantic Ocean and returned to France on Thursday.

Local workers are protesting high crime rates, hiring practices and economic conditions in French Guiana, along with the proposed privatization of the Kourou Medical and Surgical Center, or CMCK, in the town closest to the space center.

Protesters set up blockades on roads across French Guiana, including a barrier on the main highway leading into the Guiana Space Center, a facility managed by CNES, the French space agency, with financial support from the European Space Agency.

Protesters at the barrier outside the Guiana Space Center also included workers from a road transport union, who claim they are not receiving sufficient work during construction of ground facilities for the next-generation Ariane 6 rocket, according to France Guyane.

A CNES spokesperson declined to comment on the situation Thursday.

Davy Rimane, general secretary of a French Guiana electricians' union, said the protest outside the Ariane 5 launch base was symbolic because the French government "only has eyes for the space center," the French newspaper Le Figaro reported.

France Guyane reported Thursday that the Endel Engie strike was over, but drivers had to be helicoptered into the space center to get past blockades outside the southeastern gate of the spaceport.

The newspaper reported that local officials said there will be no launch until the conflicts are over.

The French government said Thursday that the plan to privatize the Kourou hospital has been suspended, and authorities invited local representatives to meet in Paris on Tuesday to hear their grievances.

    Премьер-министр Франции Бернар Казнев (Bernard Caseneuve) направил во Французскую Гвиану министерскую делегацию для разрешения сложившегося кризиса. Основные причины недовольства бастующих – высокие уровни преступности, безработица и низкий уровень жизни. В забастовке принимают участие 27 профсоюзов, среди которых и ответственные за перевозку ракеты из сборочного здания на стартовую площадку.

    Авиакомпания Air France отменила рейсы во Французскую Гвиану из-за напряженной социальной обстановки, а правительство США официально порекомендовало гражданам воздержаться от поездок в страну, сообщает Advanced Television.

KOUROU, French Guiana — Protests continued at the Guiana Space Centre with the unveiling of a sculpture of a fist, highlighting protesters' concerns. SpaceFlight Insider spoke with workers attending this rally who marched toward the Centre to meet its director, Didier Faivre.

These protests have gone on for some time and recent events suggest that protesters are making progress. At the end of last week the French Government offered 1.085 billion euros. The protesters refused. Overall they think that to solve the problems, French Guiana needs 3.1 billions immediately.

Favier decided to wait for the collective, outside the fences of the Space Center and eventually met with their representatives. 

For his part Didier, highlighted the importance of the link between Europe's space efforts and French Guiana, saying that the Space Center needs French Guiana. He went on to say that he also believes that the Centre provides beneficial effects to the surrounding community, including employment and funds. He did not allow protesters to march on the Space Centre, with police erecting a barrier just outside the spaceport.

"It would be unreasonable that the march enter in the Space Center due to safety concerns," Didier noted, adding that he has a good grasp of the situation, having a history of working in French Guiana that started 30 years ago.

 Protesters are seeking a grant from the French Government to purchase better equipment and facilities for local hospitals that they receive services from (those located in Kourou, Cayenne and Saint-Laurent du Maroni).

Moreover, they want the debts of these hospitals, towards the hospitals' suppliers to be waived. They want there to be a greater police presence, for added security to be provided to them, just as French nationals in their homeland have. Also, they are seeking comparable education services to be made available as those their French counterparts enjoy.

Didier stated that he understands that a good hospital is mandatory, for the whole population. One of the complaints that has caused these protests is adequate access to health care services. Faivre became the Director of the Guiana Space Centre on Octeber 1, 2016, before that, he served as the Assistant Director to the CNES (France's space agency) President.

 Approximately 40 people, including several journalists stayed at the Centre, after the protests had concluded. Many of those who remained were awaiting answers from France and the European Union.

Faivre was asked about the status of missions slated to fly atop the various launch vehicles operated by Arianespace. He noted that, at present, four satellites are being maintained in fully safe conditions within the Space Centre.

The Guiana Space Centre, often referred to as, Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG) is France's and Europe's spaceport and is located in the northwest of Kourou in French Guiana.

Si le collectif "Pou la Gwiyann dékolé", qui pilote le mouvement social initié depuis près d'un mois, a annoncé jeudi soir l'ouverture de la plupart des barrages pour le week-end de Pâques, il a prévenu que le barrage du rond-point proche du centre spatial guyanais (CSG) restera maintenu. Le centre spatial, vitrine économique du territoire, est considéré par le collectif comme le symbole des inégalités persistantes dans ce territoire d'outre-mer.

Les blocages en cours "ont interrompu trois campagnes de lancement pour cinq clients différents: le gouvernement brésilien et les opérateurs commerciaux ktsat (Corée), SES (Luxembourg), Viasat (Etats-Unis), Eutelsat (France)", a fait valoir Stéphane Israël, dans sa lettre adressée le 12 avril notamment aux quatre parlementaires de Guyane.
 
 "Deux lanceurs différents - Ariane et Soyouz - sont impliqués dans ces campagnes, ainsi que trois constructeurs de satellites : Thales Alenia Space, Airbus, Boeing", a-t-il aussi observé. Les blocages ont "d'ores et déjà repoussé de plus d'un mois le lancement prévu le 21 mars dernier pour le Brésil et la Corée. Ce mois perdu peut se chiffrer à plusieurs millions d'euros de surcoûts pour Arianespace et les industriels du CSG", a poursuivi Stéphane Israël. Selon lui, "l'image d'Arianespace et la disponibilité de ses services de lancement peuvent souffrir de cette situation". "Si le blocage devait persister, la réalisation de 12 lancements en 2017 serait menacée, ce qui aurait des conséquences financières lourdes", a mis en garde le PDG d'Arianespace, dans son courrier également adressé à Rodolphe Alexandre, président de la Collectivité Territoriale de Guyane. "La situation actuelle fragilise Arianespace, dans un contexte où la compétition est plus vive que jamais", a-t-il encore fait valoir.
 
 Stéphane Israël a mis en avant que "1.700 salariés" travaillent sur la base pour Arianespace, le Cnes, et 36 entreprises regroupées au sein de l'Union des Employeurs de la Base Spatiale (UEBS). Soulignant que "notre activité génère 9.000 emplois au total" et "représente 40% de la masse salariale du secteur privé en Guyane", il a estimé que "ce qui est en jeu, c'est tout simplement la pérennité de ces emplois en Guyane".
 
 "Comme toute activité (...) le lien entre la base spatiale et les territoires qui l'accueillent peut être renforcé, mais il ne fait aucun doute que le spatial constitue un poumon économique pour la Guyane", a-t-il insisté.

PARIS — The continued shutdown of Europe's spaceport threatens to scuttle launch-service provider Arianespace's plans for 2017 — a year when it hoped to distinguish itself fr om its competitors.

It is also a problem for those commercial customers whose planned launch dates in March and April are now scrapped, including Eutelsat and its 172B satellite customers, Panasonic Avionics; ViaSat Inc.'s business-crucial ViaSat-2; and SES's SES-15.

As of April 17, it was unclear whether the protest movement's decision to allow shopping over the long Easter weekend by opening roadblocks that have choked economic activity in French Guiana signaled an end to the protests, or whether circulation would be paralyzed again on April 18.

Roadblocks lifted for Easter — except for spaceport

In an indication of how the Guiana Space Center has come to symbolize the French state, the protesters maintained a roadblock of the spaceport access road while opening the others to traffic for the weekend.

The grounding of Europe's launch vehicles compounds an already stressed global commercial launch sector. Launches of Russia's Proton rocket have been suspended since June for technical defects, and a late-May return to flight has not been confirmed.

SpaceX's Falcon 9, recovering fr om a September failure, is juggling a crowded manifest. Whether it can ramp operations to its long-promised twice-per-month cadence is uncertain. China's Long March rocket family, in robust health, remains a minor player on the market because of a U.S. ban on launching U.S.-built satellite parts from China.

The Guiana Space Center, on the northeast coast of South America, has seen brief labor-related shutdowns before. Local law enforcement typically does not intervene, out of concern for creating martyrs and enflaming situations that end quietly after negotiations. This has worked in the past.

A broad-based protest, but is support eroding?

But not this time. A work stoppage March 20 at the spaceport, which prevented the Ariane 5 rocket from being rolled out to its launch pad for a planned March 21 launch, was followed by a broad movement in French Guiana protesting high crime rates, illegal immigration and the general degradation of conditions in the French overseas department.

The protest has been led not by a labor union but by a diverse collective that sometimes appears to speak with several voices. Local politicians, surprised by the movement's power, have struggled to keep up with it.

After initial days of tacit support for the movement, businesses that have been unable to function for weeks have begun to call for the movement to end. Whether local law-enforcement authorities will use these signs of strike fatigue to forcibly remove the trucks blocking the roadways was unclear.

A visit by French government ministers to negotiate an end to the crisis proved fruitless. The ministers represent a government that will leave office in May after elections and could not meet the protesters' demand of a 3-billion-euro ($3.2-billion) economic aid package.

French President Francois Hollande, who is not running for re-election and whose relevance to French politics is declining by the day, offered to meet a delegation from French Guiana in Paris. The offer was refused as too vague.

The protesters received support from the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, who said in a speech that "all my sympathy is on their side, because in Guiana, as elsewh ere, we have committed the error of inattention. And Guiana is not the only territory beyond continental Europe that finds itself in this situation. Many others, by the way, don't understand that these regions are fully part of Europe."

One French space industry official with long experience in French Guiana, while expressing irritation at Juncker's statement — the European Commission's negligible support for the spaceport is a sore point between Brussels and Paris — said it nonetheless illustrated the problem.

"There has been this idea that being in a French overseas department, the Guianese can hope for a lifestyle identical to that of metropolitan France. But that's impossible. This is South America — Brazil on one side, Suriname on the other, and an uncontrollable border.

"What's needed now is a political solution that accepts this reality while doing what we can to improve the life of the local population," this official said.

A modern spaceport in the Third World: What could go wrong?

A flourishing space-launch facility in a Third World setting has become a rallying cry for some of the activists, who have used the spaceport's strategic importance to the French government as a means of pressure.

Protesters conducted an all-night sit-in in a space center conference room after its director, Didier Faivre, admitted he could do nothing more than promise he would convey their message to CNES headquarters.

Protestors apparently hoped the power of the Guiana Space Center Director was such that he could pressure the French government to meet the demands for increased aid.

During this period, Arianespace and CNES have had zero leverage, admitting privately that they have no idea how long the paralysis will last.

CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, a former chief executive of Arianespace, told an April 4 session at the National Space Symposium in Colorado that he was "very confident that we will resume with the launches in the coming days."

Industry officials said that it would take CNES and Arianespace 10 days to prepare for a launch once the roadblock have been cleared and transit to and from the spaceport, and to French Guiana's airport, returns to normal.

Arianespace had planned six launch campaigns between January and April, and a record 12 launches for the full year: seven heavy-lift Ariane 5 rockets, three medium-lift Europeanized Russian Soyuz vehicles and two Vega small-satellite launch campaigns.

That schedule assumed a launch-free month of May. But with late-March and April launches of two Ariane 5 rockets and a Soyuz — all carrying commercial telecommunications satellites — now out of reach, May will be a catch-up month.

Even this scenario assumes the demonstrators accept the loss of face that would follow any decision to end their movement without a further government concessions beyond the 1 billion euros already promised.

Arianespace's appeal to French Guiana parliamentarians

Arianespace Chief Executive Stephane Israel on April 12 wrote the four French parliament members from French Guiana, reminding them that Arianespace's financial health is good for the territory.

"The loss of a month of activity is estimated to cost millions of euros in additional charges for Arianespace and the industry working at [the Guiana Space Center], and the customers are exposed [to costs] as well," Israel said.

"If the roadblocks continue, plans to conduct 12 launches in 2017 will be threatened, which would have heavy financial consequences for Arianespace and for the thousands of employees working at or for the spaceport.

Israel said 9,000 jobs in French Guiana are directly or indirectly supported by the space-launch activity, representing 40 percent of French Guiana's entire private-sector work force.

Arianespace did not immediately respond to requests for clarification about the "millions of euros" in additional charges — whether the revenue in question was lost or just deferred, and whether Arianespace and its contractors have insurance policies in place to cover events of this nature.

Given the state of the global launch market, Arianespace's customers for the most part are unable to take their business elsewh ere. They're just as stuck as the Ariane 5 rocket blocked in its final assembly building since March 20.

WASHINGTON — An agreement between France and its restive South American territory French Guiana, home to Europe's spaceport, has resolved a month-long dispute that had prevented any launch activity since mid-March.

Thanks to the "Accord de Guyane" agreement signed April 21 by French and French Guianese officials, launch service provider Arianespace says it will be able to soon resume launch activity and can make up for delays by using previously scheduled downtime over the next two months.

"Now that an agreement has been reached, we are fully ready to resume our operations in [the Guiana Space Centre, or CSG]," an Arianespace official told SpaceNews via email April 21. "We aim to make up for the accumulated delays on the three campaigns that were under way, without impacting the rest of our manifest, by taking advantage of the CSG's availability in May and most of June, since there were no launches scheduled those months."
 
Those three launches are:

• An Ariane 5 dual launch for South Korea's KT Sat and Brazil's Visiona Tecnologia Espacial
• A Europeanized Soyuz launch for SES of its SES-15 satellite
• An Ariane 5 dual launch for ViaSat's ViaSat-2 and Eutelsat's Eutelsat-172b satellites
  

"We believe it will take about eight working days (after resumption of operations) to carry out the VA236 launch that was originally scheduled for March 21," the Arianespace official added.

The company declined to say when exactly operations would resume.

Arianespace says it still intends to perform the same number of launches planned from the beginning of the year despite the more than four-week delay caused by widespread protests aimed at France over living and working conditions in the French overseas department.

For protesters, the contrast between local living conditions and the high-tech space facility that sends billions of dollars worth of hardware into orbit every year became emblematic of their cause. Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of the French space agency CNES, which runs the spaceport, said April 4 that he was confident launches would resume "in the coming days."

CNES is one of the agencies France uses to distribute aid to French Guiana.

In an April 20 press release celebrating the company's business success in Japan, Arianespace reaffirmed the goal of 12 launches this year, and said that the launch of BSAT-4a, an SSL-built satellite for Japan-based Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT), is scheduled for this summer on an Ariane 5 rocket.

So far Arianespace has performed three out of 12 launches, one Vega, one Soyuz and one Ariane 5. The company has six more Ariane 5 launches, two of Vega and one more Soyuz before the year is out.

Arianespace has resumed operations for its upcoming three launches: VA236 and VA237 with Ariane 5, and VS17 with Soyuz.

The new launch date for VA236 is set on May 4, 2017, as early as possible within the following launch window:

VA236 will use an Ariane 5 ECA to orbit two satellites: SGDC for the company VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A. on behalf of the Brazilian operator Telebras S.A., and KOREASAT-7 for the South Korean operator ktsat.

SGDC has a liftoff mass estimated at 5,735 kg. and is the mission's upper passenger. Riding in the lower passenger position is KOREASAT-7, with a mass at liftoff of approximately 3,680 kg.

For this fourth Arianespace mission of 2017, both payloads are based on Thales Alenia Space's Spacebus series of satellite platforms.

Once operation at an orbital position of 75 deg. West with Ka- and X-band transponders, the dual-use SGDC will provide sovereign and secure means for Brazilian government and defense strategic communications, as well as high-quality Internet services to all of the Brazilian territory as part of the National Broadband Plan.

KOREASAT-7 is to be positioned at 116 deg. Ground crews returned to work Monday at the Guiana Space Center, a European-run spaceport on the northeastern shore of South America, after protests and a general strike across French Guiana interrupted launch operations for five weeks.

Representatives of the French government and local activists signed an agreement Friday to end the month-long demonstrations and commit 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in immediate aid to French Guiana to improve public safety, education, transportation and address other grievances voiced by protesters.

Activists dropped their barricades across the territory after signing the agreement, allowing normal work to resume Monday at the spaceport near Kourou, French Guiana, for the first time in more than a month.

The strike began March 20 before an Ariane 5 rocket was due to roll out to its launch pad with Brazilian and South Korean satellites on-board. That flight was supposed to blast off March 21, but Arianespace suspended launch operations until the road barriers were lifted.

With the spaceport operational again, Arianespace announced Tuesday that the Ariane 5 flight is now set for May 4. The launch window opens at 2031 GMT (4:31 p.m. EDT; 5:31 p.m. French Guiana time).

The 180-foot-tall (55-meter) rocket, already stacked with the SGDC and Koreasat 7 communications satellites, remained inside the final assembly building at the Guiana Space Center during the demonstrations. A detachment of the French Foreign Legion provides security at the space base.

The Ariane 5 will make the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) rail journey to the ELA-3 launch pad May 3 for final launch preparations. The SGDC and Koreasat 7 satellites, both built by Thales Alenia Space of France, are owned by the Brazilian government and South Korea's commercial operator KTsat, respectively.

Labor issues at the spaceport have pushed back launches twice before, in 1989 and most recently in 2011, when the operators of radar tracking systems in French Guiana went on strike, delaying an Ariane 5 flight by 24 hours.

The Guiana Space Center is operated by CNES, the French space agency, with funding support from the European Space Agency.

The launch of the SGDC and Koreasat 7 spacecraft was initially delayed by a strike of workers responsible for driving the Ariane 5 rocket from its assembly building to the launch pad.

That issue was resolved within a few days, but a wider net of demonstrations across French Guiana spread, with many citizens raising concerns about the privatization of a local hospital, high crime and poor educational opportunities in the region, which is a department with the same political and legal rights as the rest of France.

Protest leaders demanded more 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) in emergency funding to improve conditions in French Guiana. The final agreement signed Friday calls for 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) of immediate aid, and a "priority review" of another 2.1 billion euro ($2.3 billion) funding package.

Arianespace chief executive Stephane Israel welcomed the news on Twitter.

The May 4 launch will be the first rocket flight from French Guiana in nearly two months, but Arianespace officials say the company's plan to conduct 12 launches this year remains intact.

Before the delays, there were no launches planned during May and most of June. On the current schedule, Arianespace should be able to get back on pace by late June or early July.

A Russian-made Soyuz rocket is next in line at the tropical space base, slated to loft the Boeing-built SES 15 communications satellite into orbit to provide in-flight Internet connectivity for airline passengers, and support government, networking and maritime customers across North America.

SES 15 also hosts a payload for the FAA's Wide-Area Augmentation System to enhance airline navigation and safety across the United States.

The launch of SES 15 was set for April 4 before launch operations halted. Sources said the flight is now expected May 18.

That will be followed by an Ariane 5 launch in early June with the ViaSat 2 and Eutelsat 172B commercial communications satellites. That launch was originally targeted for April 25.

Several satellite operators announced their intention to put their payloads on Arianespace rockets during the time the company's fleet was grounded.

The Italian government announced earlier this month that two of its next-generation radar surveillance satellites will launch on Soyuz and Vega-C rockets from French Guiana in 2018 and 2019, and the European Space Agency said a small space telescope designed to study planets around other stars will blast off with one of the Italian reconnaissance platforms on a Soyuz mission next year.

The Horizons 3e communications satellite, part of a joint venture between Intelsat and Japan's SKY Perfect JSAT Corp., will launch on an Ariane 5 rocket in late 2018, officials announced last week.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace Flight VA236 moves into position at the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.
 
Equipped with the SGDC and KOREASAT-7 satellite passengers, the Ariane 5 was transferred today from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone, wh ere it is scheduled for liftoff on May 4 during a launch window that opens at 5:31 p.m., local time in French Guiana.

Designated Flight VA236 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, Ariane 5's total payload lift performance on this mission to geostationary transfer orbit is estimated at 10,289 kg.

SGDC (Geostationary Satellite for Communications and Defense) is the upper passenger, and will be released at 28 minutes after liftoff. Riding in the lower payload position is KOREASAT-7, which is to be deployed 36 minutes into the mission.

Providing relay capacity for South America and Asia

Both SGDC and KOREASAT-7 were produced in France by Thales Alenia Space using this company's Spacebus satellite platforms.

Based on the Spacebus 4000C4 configuration, SGDC is the initial satellite to be launched by Arianespace for Telebras S.A., performed within the framework of a contract with SGDC prime contractor VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A.

It will operate from an orbital position of 75 deg. West with Ka- and X-band transponders, providing sovereign and secure means for Brazilian government and defense strategic communications, as well as high-quality Internet services to 100 percent of the Brazilian territory as part of the National Broadband Plan.

KOREASAT-7 was built with a Spacebus 4000B2 platform, and will be the third KOREASAT satellite launched by Arianespace for ktsat – a wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea's KT Corp. When located at the 116 deg. East orbital slot, KOREASAT-7 will be used for a full range of video and data applications, including Internet access, direct-to-home broadcasting (DTH), government communications and connectivity for VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks.  Its coverage area encompasses Korea, the Philippines, the Indochinese Peninsula, India and Indonesia.

A month-and-a-half after a general strike in French Guiana halted launch preparations, an Ariane 5 rocket arrived at its launch pad Wednesday on the northeastern coast of South America, a day before hauling two communications satellites into orbit for the Brazilian government and a South Korean company.

The two French-built satellites are mounted one on top of the other inside the Ariane 5's nose fairing, ready for liftoff at 2031 GMT (4:31 p.m. EDT; 5:31 p.m. French Guiana time) Thursday. The launch window extends for 168 minutes.

The Ariane 5 rocket and its mobile launch platform emerged from the final assembly building at the Guiana Space Center on Wednesday morning, pulled by a diesel truck along dual rail tracks for the 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) trip to the spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.

Standing 180 feet (55 meters) tall, the Ariane 5 will launch for the second time this year Thursday, and make its 92nd flight overall since debuting in 1996. Thursday's mission will be Arianespace's fourth launch of 2017, a tally that includes missions with Soyuz and Vega launchers.

Brazil's SGDC spacecraft will ride in the upper position of the Ariane 5's dual-payload Sylda structure.

The 12,643-pound (5,735-kilogram) satellite is launching on a dual-use mission for the Brazilian military and to help bridge the digital divide for far-flung Brazilian citizens. During its 18-year mission, SGDC's 57 Ka-band and X-band transponders will be capable of delivering more than 57 gigabits per second of throughput across Brazilian territory from a perch in geostationary orbit along the equator at 75 degrees west longitude.

"The satellite, due to the coverage capability in Ka-band, will ensure digital connectivity to all Brazilians, providing broadband service all around the country," said Mario Quintino, mission director for the SGDC program. The Koreasat 7 payload, mounted in the lower position inside the Ariane 5 fairing, is on the way to an operating post in geostationary orbit 116 degrees east longitude. Owned by KTsat, based in Seoul, Koreasat 7 weighs 8,113 pounds (3,680 kilograms) fully fueled, carrying enough propellant for 21 years of service life, according to Hun Chul Lee, the satellite mission director.

"Koreasat 7 will provide a full range of video and data applications, such as direct-to-home broadcasting, Internet access and VSAT (very small aperture terminal) services with mainly Ku-band transponders and an added Ka-band steerable beam," he said.

The new spacecraft will extend KTsat's reach into new markets, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Indochina and India.

Both satellites on Thursday's flight were manufactured by Thales Alenia Space, which assembles spacecraft at a plant in Cannes, France.

Since the space center reopened, the launch team conducted a second rehearsal to practice countdown procedures and re-inspected the Ariane 5 prior to rollout. Final arming of the launcher was completed Saturday.

Once the launcher arrived at the pad Wednesday, ground crews connected the Ariane 5 to the facility's propellant and electrical supplies in advance of Thursday's countdown.

The countdown is due to begin at 0908 GMT (5:08 a.m. EDT; 6:08 a.m. French Guiana time), and a check of electrical systems is scheduled around 0958 GMT (5:58 a.m. EDT).

Workers will also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for today's launch will be loaded into the rocket's computer.
 
The launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1608 GMT (12:08 p.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It will take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage will commence at 1648 GMT (12:48 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will occur at 1713 GMT (1:13 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 1916 GMT (3:16 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison 2 minutes, 21 seconds after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 53 seconds after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire for nearly 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,926 kilometers (22,323 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 4 degrees.

The release of SGDC is scheduled for 28 minutes, 11 seconds, after liftoff. The rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned a few minutes later.

Koreasat 7 will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 36 minutes, 46 seconds.

The satellites will use their on-board thrusters to circularize their orbits at an altitude of around 22,300 miles (nearly 35,800 kilometers) over the equator a few weeks after launch. At that altitude, the spacecraft will move around Earth at the same speed the planet rotates, allowing them to remain over their planned services areas for the duration of their missions.

Standing nearly 180 feet (55 meters) tall, the Ariane 5 is scheduled to lift off from Kourou, French Guiana, at 2031 GMT (4:31 p.m. EDT; 5:31 p.m. French Guiana time) Thursday. The launch will mark the 92nd Ariane 5 flight since 1996, and the launcher's second mission this year.

The Brazilian-owned SGDC satellite, weighing around 12,643 pounds (5,735 kilograms) at launch, is the heavier of the two spacecraft aboard the Ariane 5 rocket. Koreasat 7 weighs 8,113 pounds (3,680 kilograms) with its propellant tanks full.

The rocket will target an orbit ranging from 155 miles (250 kilometers) to 22,323 miles (35,926 kilometers), with a tilt of 4 degrees to the equator.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Airbus Safran Launchers in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Airbus Safran Launchers in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Today's launch will deliver the SGDC and Koreasat 7 communications satellites to an orbit targeting a planned high point of 22,323 miles, a targeted low point of 155 miles and an inclination of 4 degrees.

Both satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space and will use their on-board engines to raise their orbits to maintain altitude nearly 22,300 miles over the equator.

The 12,643-pound SGDC satellite, occupying the upper position in the Ariane 5's dual-payload stack, will beam broadband connectivity across Brazil, focusing on remote regions out of reach of terrestrial networks. The craft, owned by government-based Telebras, will also provide secure communications services to the Brazilian military.

SGDC will separate from the Ariane 5's second stage at T+plus 28 minutes, 11 seconds.

A Sylda 5 adapter will be discarded a few minutes later, revealing the 8,113-pound Koreasat 7 spacecraft, the mission's other satellite passenger.

Koreasat 7 is designed to support video, data broadband and direct-to-home broadcasting services over South Korea, Indonesia, Indochina and India for Seoul-based KTsat. Separation of the Koreasat 7 spacecraft from the Ariane 5 rocket is scheduled at T+plus 36 minutes, 46 seconds.

The payloads have a combined mass of approximately 22,683 pounds, or 10,289 kilograms, including the barrel-shaped Sylda dual-payload adapter.

During the last few minutes, the Synchronized Sequence has been prepped for activation. This computer-run sequence assumes control of the countdown at the Minus-7 minute mark to perform the final tasks to place the rocket and pad systems in launch configuration.

At Minus-4 seconds, the rocket's onboard computer will take over control of main engine start, health checks of the powerplant and solid rocket booster ignition commanding for liftoff.

Dual-payload delivery: Ariane 5 sends SGDC and KOREASAT-7 to geostationary transfer orbit

Arianespace orbited two telecommunications payloads for Brazil and South Korea on the 78th consecutive success performed with its Ariane 5 – confirming this vehicle's position as the world reference for heavy launchers.

Lifting off from the Spaceport in French Guiana, today's mission – designated Flight VA236 in Arianespace's numbering system – delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 10,289 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit.

It carried SGDC (Geostationary Satellite for Communications and Defense) for VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A. (on behalf of Brazilian operator Telebras S.A. and the Brazilian government); and KOREASAT-7, which will be operated by ktsat – a wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea's KT Corp. SGDC was deployed first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 at 28 minutes after liftoff, followed 8 minutes later by KOREASAT-7.

Both SGDC and KOREASAT-7 were produced by Thales Alenia Space using its Spacebus satellite platforms (Spacebus 4000C4 for SGDC; Spacebus 4000B2 for KOREASAT-7). This marks the seventh time Arianespace has performed a dual-payload flight with both satellites built by this spacecraft manufacturer.

Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël offered his congratulations to all parties involved during post-launch comments from the Spaceport's Jupiter control room, and added that Flight VA236 "served two special customers and countries."

 

Providing relay capacity for South America

SGDC is the first satellite Arianespace has launched for Telebras S.A., performed within the framework of a contract with SGDC prime contractor VISIONA Tecnologia Espacial S.A.

It will operate from an orbital position of 75 deg. West with Ka- and X-band transponders, providing sovereign and secure means for Brazilian government and defense strategic communications, as well as high-quality Internet services to 100 percent of the Brazilian territory as part of the National Broadband Plan.

 

Meeting increased demand for services in Asia

KOREASAT-7 is the third KOREASAT satellite orbited by Arianespace for ktsat, following KOREASAT-3 and KOREASAT-6 – launched in September 1999 and December 2010, respectively.

When located at the 116 deg. East orbital slot, KOREASAT-7 will be used for a full range of video and data applications, including internet access, DTH (direct-to-home broadcasting), government communications and connectivity for VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks. Its coverage area encompasses Korea, the Philippines, the Indochinese Peninsula, India and Indonesia.

 

Arianespace's 2017 launch schedule is on track

"With our fourth successful launch of the year, and the second with an Ariane 5, Arianespace is on track to deliver 12 launches this year as originally scheduled," added Arianespace's Israël.
All three members of Arianespace's launcher family have been utilized so far in 2017 to loft payloads for the company's clients.  In addition to the previous Ariane 5 mission (Flight VA235 with SKY Brasil-1 and Telkom 3S, conducted in February), the medium-lift Soyuz was in action during January to orbit Hispasat 36W-1, and the lightweight Vega lofted Sentinel-2B in March.

Arianespace's next launch – Soyuz Flight VS17, scheduled from the Spaceport on May 18 – will carry the SES-15 satellite for global operator SES.

Airbus Safran Launchers: 78th consecutive successful launch for Ariane 5

For its second launch of the year, Ariane 5 successfully completed its mission from the European space port of Kourou (French Guiana) for the 78th consecutive time, placing two telecommunications satellites in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

With Ariane 5, we must renew our efforts to prove that our launcher is constantly adapting to be more efficient and competitive. The launch performance achieved by this Ariane 5 ECA was 10,289 kg in GTO (of which around 9,415 kg was accounted for by the satellites). The launcher improvement program enabled an optimized GTO orbit to be used, with an inclination reduced to 4° in order to minimize the energy the satellites need to reach their final orbit and satisfy fully Arianespace customers. The lower satellite carried by this Ariane 5, under the SYLDA (Ariane dual launch system), was the heaviest ever placed on the LVA 3936 (Launch Vehicle Adaptor). This special adaptor was used to make up for the difference between the usual diameter of the launcher (3,936 mm) and that of the payloads (1,780 mm).

Operational in the field of commercial launchers since 2015, Airbus Safran Launchers was definitively completed on 1 July 2016 and became a 74% majority shareholder of Arianespace on 31 December 2016. This new governance makes possible an overall approach to market needs from launcher design and construction up to commercialization, thus reinforcing industrial efficiency and operational flexibility for the benefit of Arianespace's customers.

Ariane 5 is the spearhead of European know-how and one of the most wide-ranging and ambitious space programs in the world. Its flexibility enables it to transport heavy payloads into low Earth orbit, several satellites into medium Earth orbit or, as it is the case today, one or two satellites into geostationary transfer orbit with an optimized lifetime.

Airbus Safran Launchers is lead contractor for the Ariane 5 launchers. The company coordinates an industrial network of more than 550 companies in 12 European countries (including more than 100 Small and Medium Enterprises). Airbus Safran Launchers oversees the entire industrial chain, from management of launcher performance upgrades, to production management, to final adjustment with supply of the mission flight software and, from now on, its marketing through Arianespace. This chain includes equipment and structures, engines manufacturing, integration of the various stages and finally launcher integration in French Guiana.

Airbus Safran Launchers is also industrial lead contractor for Europe's future Ariane 6 launcher, which is scheduled for a first flight in 2020 and which will replace Ariane 5 in about 2023.

Flight VA236: Arianespace logs 78th successful Ariane 5 launch in a row, orbits telecom satellites for Brazil and South Korea

Arianespace has successfully launched two telecommunications satellites: SGDC for Visiona Tecnologia Espacial S.A, on behalf of the Brazilian operator Telebras S.A. and the Brazilian government; and KOREASAT-7 for South Korean operator ktsat.
                        
The launch took place on Tuesday, May 4 at 6:50 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center, Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

Today's launch was the fourth of the year for Arianespace and the second in 2017 with the Ariane 5 heavy launcher, which also recorded its 78th successful mission in a row. In addition, it was the seventh Arianespace mission that carried two satellites built by Thales Alenia Space.

Arianespace, a major player in Brazil for 30 years, launches the country's first governmental telecommunications satellite

SGDC, the Geostationary Defence and Strategic Communications Satellite, is the first satellite for the Brazilian operator Telebras S.A. to be orbited by Arianespace, within the scope of a turnkey contract with the company Visiona Tecnologia Espacial S.A.

SGDC is a Brazilian government program, designed to meet three main objectives:

• Reduce the country's digital divide by supplying high-quality internet services across all of Brazil, within the scope of a national broadband plan.
• Provide independent and secure strategic communications services for the Brazilian armed forces and government.
• Provide the Brazilian space industry with key technologies so that it can play a growing role in the country's future space programs.
  

A major player in Brazil since 1985, Arianespace has successfully launched all 11 Brazilian telecom satellites for legacy operator Embratel, as well as Star One, a wholly-owned Embratel subsidiary.

With this latest mission, Arianespace has now launched three satellites providing coverage of Brazil during the past six months: [/li] Star One D1 (December 2016) SKY Brasil 1 (February 2017) SGDC (March 2017)

Arianespace: a launch for ktsat and benchmark partner to the South Korean space program

KOREASAT-7 is the third satellite to be launched by Arianespace for South Korean operator ktsat, a subsidiary of KT Corp, the largest telecommunications/media service provider in the country. It follows the launches of KOREASAT-3 in 1999 and KOREASAT-6 in 2010.

KOREASAT-7 will provide a wide range of video and data transmission applications, including internet access, direct-to-home (DTH) TV broadcasting, government communications and connectivity to VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks, to extend services to isolated areas.

Starting with the launch of the first ever South Korean satellites – KITSAT-1A in 1992 and KITSAT-2 in 1993 – Arianespace has become a major partner to the country's space program. Including this latest Flight VA236 mission, more than half of South Korea's geostationary satellites have been launched by Arianespace. The company's order book includes two more satellites for the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI): GEO-KOMPSAT-2A, planned for 2018, and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, planned for 2019.

7th Arianespace flight carrying two Thales Alenia Space-built satellites on the same launcher

Today's mission was the seventh Arianespace dual-launch carrying two satellites built by Thales Alenia Space. SGDC and KOREASAT-7 were built in Thales Alenia Space's plants in Cannes and Toulouse (France), using the Spacebus 4000C4 and 4000B2 platforms, respectively. These platforms are perfectly adapted to Arianespace's launcher family.

Arianespace and Thales Alenia Space have developed a very solid and fruitful relationship since the launch of Meteosat-F2 on June 19, 1981. SGDC and KOREASAT-7 are the 147th and 148th Thales Alenia Space satellites to be launched by Arianespace.

Eight more Thales Alenia Space satellites are to be launched by Arianespace in the coming years.

Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of the two satellites, Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace, said: "With this second successful launch of the year by Ariane 5, and the 78th successful mission in a row by our heavy launcher, Arianespace proudly gives our Brazilian and South Korean customers the benefits of our excellent launch services. The SGDC satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space using a Spacebus 4000C4 platform. Its payload comprises 57 Ka and X-band transponders. Positioned at 75° West, SGDC will provide telecommunications, internet access and civil and military communications services for Brazil.  The satellite weighed 5,735 kg. at launch and offers a design life exceeding 18 years. KOREASAT-7 was built by Thales Alenia Space using a Spacebus 4000B2 platform. Its payload comprises 30 Ku-band transponders, plus Ka-band transponders. Positioned at 116° East, KOREASAT-7 will supply telecommunications and broadcasting services for South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and the  Indochinese peninsula. The satellite weighed 3,680 kg. at launch and offers a design life exceeding 15 years.

ПАРИЖ, 5 мая. /Корр. ТАСС Иван Батырев/. Запуск европейской ракеты-носителя тяжелого класса Ariane-5 успешно произведен с космодрома в Гвианском космическом центре (ГКЦ). Об этом сообщили в компании Arianespace, которая обслуживает коммерческие старты с этой площадки в Гвиане.

На орбиту ракета успешно вывела два телекоммуникационных спутника. Общая масса полезной нагрузки составила 9,41 т.

Первый аппарат - геостационарный спутник стратегической связи SGDC массой 5,73 т для бразильского оператора Telebras, работающего по государственному заказу. Забастовщики, в частности, на несколько недель перекрыли въезд на территорию центра, и снять блокаду удалось лишь 22 апреля - только после этого космодром смог вернуться к работе в штатном режиме и возобновить подготовку отложенных запусков.

Из-за массового движения протеста в Гвиане был также перенесен и старт российской ракеты "Союз-СТ", которая должна была 4 апреля вывести на орбиту телекоммуникационный спутник для люксембургского оператора SES. Теперь этот запуск запланирован на 18 мая.

Ariane 5 has delivered two telecom satellites, SGDC and Koreasat-7, into their planned orbits.

Arianespace announced the liftoff at 21:50 GMT (23:50 CEST, 18:50 local time) yesterday from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The mission lasted about 36 minutes.

Brazil's SGDC Geostationary Satellite for Communications and Defense, with a launch mass of 5735 kg, was the first to be released after about 28 minutes. The 3680 kg Koreasat-7 was released eight minutes later.

SGDC, operated by Telebras SA, will provide Brazil with broadband, new space technologies and strategic communications. The satellite has a design life of more than 18 years.

Koreasat-7, operated by ktsat, will provide telecommunications and broadcasting services over Korea, the Philippines, Indochina, India and Indonesia. The satellite has a design life of more than 15 years.

The payload mass for this launch was 10 289 kg. The satellites totalled about 9415 kg, with payload adapters and carrying structures making up the rest.

Flight VA236 was the 92nd Ariane 5 mission.

It will provide sovereign and safe means for the strategic communications of the government and the defense  and reduce the digital divide in Brazil by giving internet access to the whole country. This program reflects the close collaboration between Thales Alenia Space and Brazil, which includes the training of 30 Brazilian engineers in space industry techniques as well as the integration aboard the satellite of a structure panel made by the Brazilian company CENIC.

KOREASAT-7 was launched for the South Korean telecom/media service provider  KT Sat. The satellite will provide Internet access, multimedia, broadcasting and fixed communications services for South Korea, Philippines, Indonesia and India. The KOREASAT-5A satellite is now being integrated by Thales Alenia Space and will later join KTSAT's  fleet.

Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo (67%) and Thales (33%), supported Thales Alenia Space throughout the installation, configuration and set-up of the SGDC 13-meters antennas for TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking and Control) activities and to provide the equipment of both SGDC control centres in Brasilia (main) and Rio de Janeiro (backup). Telespazio's Fucino Space Centre, in co-operation with the Thales Alenia Space teams in Cannes, will manage the activities to put both satellites, SGDC and KOREASAT-7, into orbit.
