WGS 9 was built with funding from Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and New Zealand.
The partner nations bought the satellite in exchange for access to the entire constellation, similar to the groundbreaking deal with Australia that paid for the construction and launch of WGS 6.
The arrival of WGS 9 comes just a month after the successful launch of WGS 8 aboard another Delta 4 from the Cape. The satellite is undergoing electric propulsion maneuvers to reach geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above Earth.

It is scheduled to fly March 8 during a 121-minute window that opens at 6:35 p.m. EST (2335 GMT) to deploy the Wideband Global SATCOM 9 communications satellite.
In the coming days, four strap-on solid rocket boosters will be installed to the Delta 4's first stage. The payload will be attached in late February.
WGS 9 was built by Boeing for the U.S. military's worldwide communications network. But it was funding from Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and New Zealand that paid for the satellite's construction as part of an international agreement.
The partner nations bought the satellite in exchange for access to the entire constellation, similar to the groundbreaking deal with Australia that paid for the construction and launch of WGS 6.
WGS 9 will join its sisters in geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above Earth to provide voice, data and video relay to troops, aircraft, ships and aerial drones.
It carries the same upgrade as WGS 8 that nearly doubles its bandwidth as compared to earlier satellites in the series.

Rocket/Payload:  A United Launch Alliance Delta IV Medium+ (5,4) rocket will launch the ninth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS-9) mission for the U.S. Air Force.

Date/Site/Launch Time:  Wednesday, March 8, 2017, from Space Launch Complex (SLC)-37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The 121-minute launch window opens at 6:35 p.m. EST.

Live Broadcast: Tune in to ULA's live launch day broadcast beginning at 6:15 p.m. EST.

Mission Description: WGS satellites are important elements of a new high-capacity satellite communications system providing enhanced communications capabilities to our troops in the field. WGS has 19 independent coverage areas, 18 of which can be positioned throughout its field-of-view. This includes eight steerable/shapeable X-band beams formed by separate transmit/receive phased arrays; 10 Ka-band beams served by independently steerable diplexed antennas; and one transmit/receive X-band Earth-coverage beam. WGS can tailor coverage areas and connect X-band and Ka-band users anywhere within its field-of-view. The X-band phased array antenna enables anti-jam functionality without sacrificing performance.

Launch Notes: WGS-9 will mark the seventh flight of the Delta IV in the Medium + (5,4)configuration; all launches in this configuration have delivered WGS missions to orbit. This mission also will be the 35th launch of the Delta IV since its inaugural launch in 2002.

CAPE CANAVERAL — A military communications satellite, built with international funding from Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and New Zealand, has been stacked atop a Delta 4 rocket to launch into a worldwide information-relay network operated by the U.S.

WGS 9, the ninth installment of the Wideband Global SATCOM communications satellite system, will be boosted into a super-synchronous transfer orbit by the United Launch Alliance Delta 4 Medium+ (5,4) configured rocket with four strap-on solids.

Liftoff is planned for March 8 during a window of 6:48 to 7:53 p.m. EDT (2248-2353 GMT).

The allies bought this satellite in exchange for access to the planet-spanning constellation, similar to the groundbreaking deal with Australia that paid for the construction and launch of WGS 6.

"Each of the partners receive resources commensurate with their investment with WGS 9...Commensurate investments from these partners equate to approximately 3 percent of the WGS constellation bandwidth," according to answers provided by the Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center.

The international participation gives communications interoperability between allied forces, funds expansion of the constellation and allows each partner nation to make a modest investment to receive immediate access to worldwide services that would be too expensive to construct on their own.

The WGS 9 deal was signed in 2012 to begin construction of the satellite.

"In accordance with the terms of the partnership, the international partners gained access to the WGS constellation upon enactment in 2012."

WGS is the Department of Defense's highest capacity communications satellite system. The spacecraft create a global grid to provide the needed coverage and connectivity in support of operations by U.S. and allied forces around the world.

Boeing builds the WGS satellites, which began launching in 2007.

The new bird, valued at $424 million, will be maneuvered into a circular geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles above the equator to enter service from an undisclosed position.

Just like WGS 8 launched in December, No. 9 carries the second Wideband Digital Channelizer at the heart of its communications package, enabling a 90 percent improvement in available bandwidth compared to previous sister-satellites.

Already shrouded in the rocket's 47-foot-tall, 17-foot-diameter composite nose cone, the WGS 9 spacecraft was hauled to Complex 37 overnight and hoisted atop the Delta 4 launch vehicle today.

The fully assembled rocket stands 217 feet tall.

"The international partners funded the procurement of the ninth WGS satellite. The United States funded the launch, operation and sustainment of WGS 9," according to SMC.

The satellite was flown to Florida in early January from Boeing's manufacturing facility in El Segundo, California. After arriving, it was taken to the commercial Astrotech processing facility to undergo pre-flight preps.

Final testing, loading of maneuvering propellant and encapsulation in the Delta 4's nose cone was accomplished with the satellite.

Today's transfer to the pad saw the 13,000-pound satellite move from Titusville, through the Kennedy Space Center and over to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Complex 37.

Since rolling from its hangar a month ago, the Delta has undergone attachment of the four solid boosters and a pre-launch testing campaign. A fueling exercise was performed just last week.

Delta 377 will be the rocket family's first of 2017.

CAPE CANAVERAL — Air Force meteorologists are expecting good weather to launch the Delta 4 rocket with a military communications satellite when the sun goes down Friday evening at Cape Canaveral.

Liftoff of the United Launch Alliance booster carrying the Wideband Global SATCOM 9 spacecraft for the U.S. Air Force is scheduled to occur at 7:44 p.m. EST (2344 GMT). The launch window will remain open for 74 minutes to 8:58 p.m. (0058 GMT).

The chances of allowable weather stand at 90 percent, with only a slight concern for liftoff winds during the launch opportunity.

"A high pressure area will gradually move into the Southeast U.S. Thursday and Friday, and as this occurs, the pressure gradient will slacken and winds will decrease," forecasters at the 45th Weather Squadron say.

"Weather is generally favorable for launch."

The launch time conditions are expected to include only scattered clouds, good visibility, ground winds from the east at 10 gusting to 15 knots, a relative humidity of 67 percent and a temperature of 63 degrees F.

An on-time liftoff at the opening of the window would occur 12 minutes after sunset but well within twilight conditions.

The closest free public viewing location is along Route 401 in Port Canaveral, some 8.6 miles from the launch pad, according to LaunchPhotography.com (http://www.launchphotography.com/Delta_4_Atlas_5_Falcon_9_Launch_Viewing.html).

CAPE CANAVERAL — With the SpaceX scrub earlier this week and the time needed to convert the Eastern Range over to the Delta 4, liftoff of that rocket carrying an internationally-purchased military communications satellite for the Air Force has been bumped to Saturday evening.

Liftoff of the United Launch Alliance Delta 4 carrying the Wideband Global SATCOM 9 spacecraft is scheduled to occur at 7:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT). The launch window will remain open for 75 minutes to 8:59 p.m. (0059 GMT).

After SpaceX scrubbed its launch early Tuesday, the company invoked its backup Range date of early Thursday.

Despite the 43-hour turnaround between SpaceX's next attempt and the Delta 4's scheduled launch, the Range ruled late Tuesday it could not support the military satellite flight on Friday evening. That automatically moved the Delta 4 to Saturday.

Спойлер
The Eastern Range provides the required safety and tracking services for all launches from the Space Coast.

The chances of allowable weather for the Delta 4 on Saturday stand at 90 percent, with only a slight concern for cumulus clouds during the launch opportunity.

"The next cold front will be dropping southward into northern Florida late on Saturday, but will remain relatively weak and not track through Central Florida until Sunday morning. Weather should be favorable for MST rollback during the day and for the evening launch," forecasters at the 45th Weather Squadron say.

"The primary concern for launch is cumulus clouds forming in advance of the front, however they should be of minimum vertical development and very isolated."

The launch time conditions are expected to include only a few low-level clouds and some scattered high clouds, good visibility, ground winds from the southwest at 10 gusting to 15 knots, a relative humidity of 64 percent and a temperature of 66 degrees F.

Sunday's backup launch window, if needed, should have 80 percent favorable weather.

"For Sunday, the relatively dry cold front tracks through Central Florida in the morning and drops into Southern Florida by afternoon. Skies will be fair, however winds will be 17 knots gusting to 25 knots throughout the day. During the morning, winds will be from the northwest then veering to north by evening. The primary concern for a 24-hour delay is lift-off winds, however the wind direction will be from a favorable (~010 degrees) azimuth during Sunday's launch window," forecasters say.

CAPE CANAVERAL — Signaling strength in the international cooperation between the U.S. military and allied nations, a satellite funded by five countries will be launched by the Air Force on Saturday to codify a global communications deal.

A United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket will send the Wideband Global SATCOM communications spacecraft No. 9 into orbit from Cape Canaveral during an evening window of 7:44 to 8:59 p.m. EDT (2344-0059 GMT).

Weather forecasters project a 90 percent chance of favorable conditions for launch.

Спойлер
The Boeing Co. built the WGS 9 satellite with money from Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and New Zealand. The Air Force is launching the craft and will perform the command-and-control functions during its 14-year life expectancy.

Once the satellite was purchased in 2012, the U.S. military opened up access to its worldwide fleet of WGS spacecraft to provide bandwidth to the five allies that is commensurate with the amount of funding each country invested into WGS 9.

The arrangement gives the Pentagon's highest-capacity communications backbone a ninth satellite while supplying the partner nations with secure, anti-jam connectivity anywhere on Earth via any WGS spacecraft.

"WGS provides anytime, anywhere communications for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and international partners through broadcast, multicast and point-to-point connections," said Robert Tarleton, director of the Air Force's Military Satellite Communications Systems at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

"This very successful cooperative effort, along with the U.S. and Australia cooperative effort for WGS 6, enhances the foundation for long-term cooperation in military satellite communications and has been very effective in promoting increased interoperability among our strategic allies."

Valued at $424 million and weighing about 13,000 pounds at launch, WGS 9 was manufactured at Boeing 's factory in El Segundo, California. It is based on the Boeing 702HP satellite platform with both conventional and xenon-ion propulsion, deployable thermal radiators and power-generating solar arrays that stretch 135 feet tip-to-tip, a wingspan larger than a Boeing 737 but smaller than a Boeing 747.

The WGS satellites place shaped, steerable spotbeams of bandwidth wherever requested across their field-of-view for Ka- and X-band frequencies, plus the onboard capability to switch signals from one band to the other.

Each satellite has electrically-steerable, phased array antennas for X-band transmitting and receiving, mechanically-steered Ka-band antennas and a fixed full-Earth-coverage beam also in X-band.

The antennas provide 19 independent coverage areas — 10 Ka-band and 8 X-band spotbeams, plus the full-Earth footprint.

The WGS 8, 9 and 10 satellites feature upgraded Wideband Digital Channelizers at the heart of their communications packages that nearly doubles capacity compared to the previous sister-spacecraft in the series.

WGS 9 with its advanced channelizer will support over 11 gigabits per second of data processing, officials said.

WGS is the central element in the U.S. military's global communications infrastructure for troops on the ground, aircraft in the sky, ships at sea, the White House Communications Agency and the State Department, plus Australia that funded WGS 6 and the five allies that bought WGS 9.

The system transmits high-priority communications such as the exchange of war-fighting information between battlefield commanders on the ground and senior defense officials.

The satellites supply communications such as maps and data to soldiers in war zones, relay video from unmanned aerial reconnaissance drones, route voice calls and messaging, and even offer quality-of-life considerations like television broadcasts and email delivery to the troops.

Bringing in the international partners enables interoperability with coalition forces to communicate on the same system.

"As a global company, Boeing is happy to have been able to support the government in establishing the international business arrangement that enabled WGS 9 and appreciates the relationships we have built with our coalition partners over the years," said Rico Attanasio, director of Boeing's MILSATCOM programs.

"The capabilities of the WGS system are supporting our allies around the world with joint missions and helping our military be more effective."

Australia was the first country to join WGS, funding the construction of WGS 6 and its launch in August 2013.

Canada and the Netherlands also partner on the U.S. military's Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite series that provides nuclear-survivable communications.

"We have ongoing, constant communications with international partners about joining in all of our communications whether it be wideband like WGS or protected like AEHF or EPS (Enhanced Polar System)," said Tarleton.

"It starts out as an expressed interest, certainly, with our allies we are looking to team as much as we can, then work forward through a Memorandum of Understanding and the funding and division of access to the constellation."

Getting WGS 9 into space begins with a ride atop the 900,000-pound, 217-foot-tall Delta rocket that will launch on 1.8 million pounds of thrust from its hydrogen-fueled Aerojet Rocketdyne RS-68A main engine and four side-mounted solid-fuel boosters from Orbital ATK.

"With four solids, if you are there in the local area it will be a pretty amazing experience with the sound and the vibrations and acoustics of the vehicle lifting off," said Laura Maginnis, United Launch Alliance's vice president for Government Satellite Launch

It will be the 7th flight for the Delta 4 Medium+ (5,4) variant, all for WGS, and the 35th launch overall for the rocket family.

Arcing to the east on a 93.46-degree flight azimuth, Delta 4 will experience maximum dynamic pressure, or Max Q, at 46 seconds, and the ground-lit boosters will burn out at 92 seconds and separate at 100 seconds.

Once out of the atmosphere and shortly before staging, the 47-foot-tall, 17-foot-diameter nose cone made of composites is jettisoned three minutes and 15 seconds into flight.

The first stage engine will propel the vehicle until T+plus 3 minutes and 57 seconds, followed by separation of the Common Booster Core seven seconds after cutoff.

The initial burn by the cryogenic upper stage gets underway at T+plus 4 minutes, 16 seconds, firing the high-energy Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10B-2 engine for nearly 16 minutes to accelerate to orbital velocity and then reach a preliminary parking orbit.

The vehicle performs a brief coast above equatorial Africa before restarting the RL10 engine at T+plus 29 minutes, 27 seconds, executing a three-minute burn to reach a highly elliptical super-synchronous transfer orbit.

Spacecraft deployment occurs over the Indian Ocean at T+plus 41 minutes, 46 seconds.

WGS 9 will be released into an orbit 270 by 27,572 statute miles with an inclination of 27 degrees. That orbit is lower than the 41,000-mile apogees achieved by previous WGS satellites, a change was made beginning with WGS 8 last December to enable a safe deorbiting of the depleted upper stage after releasing the satellite.

The new parameters meet the satellite's requirements and allow for the disposal of the rocket body in the fight against space debris and uncontrolled re-entries.

"For every mission, we look to see if we can be compliant to national space policy and we certainly want to be good stewarts of space. I'm not the expert on space junk or space debris, but every time we have the opportunity to not leave things in space that's what we want to try and do," said Col. Shane Clark, the Air Force's mission director for the WGS 9 launch and EELV Generation operations division chief at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

"Of course, we have to balance that across a variety of technical concerns with the satellite and the launch vehicle as we make those decisions. For WGS 8 and this mission (too), we all came together and found we could be compliant with space policy and be good stewarts of the environment up there and accomplish the objectives for the WGS program by putting the satellite wh ere it needs to be."

The RL10 engine will be re-ignited 30 minutes after spacecraft separation and perform just a 10-second deorbit burn. That'll cause the stage to re-enter over the Pacific at its first orbital perigee, 12 hours after launch.

It is a new policy for military launches to avoid leaving upper stages in orbit whenever possible. An extra strap-on solid rocket booster has been added to the Atlas 5 launching the SBIRS GEO Flight 4 missile-warning satellite later this year, for example, to give enough vehicle performance to complete the satellite deployment and then deorbit the upper stage.

"It's predominately a debris issue," Clark said.

The Air Force drafted specific language that now requires launch procurements to meet U.S. Government Orbital Debris Mitigation Standard Practices, or ODMSP, and to comply with the Space Safety and Mishap Prevention Program orbital debris requirements.

"ODMSP applies to all Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV)/National Security Space launch missions, not just SBIRS GEO. In some cases, compliance may require increased launch vehicle performance when compared to non-compliant missions," according to Lt. Gen. Greaves, SMC commander and Air Force Program Executive Officer for Space.

The WGS 9 satellite is destined to operate at an undisclosed location in geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the equator, matching Earth's rotation and remaining in lockstep over a specific spot of the globe.

The final WGS satellite — No. 10 — will be launched in late 2018.

A rocket launch celebrating the 70th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force while highlighting capabilities that the military service provides the country and allies has been cleared for liftoff at sunset Saturday.

The United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket is scheduled for departure at 7:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT) from Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral. The evening's launch window will remain open for 75 minutes.

Government and contractor managers convened the Launch Readiness Review today to assess preparations for the mission and granted approval to enter into the countdown on Saturday as planned.

The mobile service tower will be rolled back from the 217-foot-tall rocket shortly before noon EDT and fueling operations will underway by 3:30 p.m. EDT.

We will have complete live play-by-play coverage of the count and launch on this page, as well as a webcast of liftoff.

Weather forecasters give a 90 percent chance of acceptable launch conditions.

"A surface high pressure area is established over the southeastern states which will maintain a dry, stable air mass over Central Florida for the next 48 hours," the Air Force launch weather team reported this morning.

"Weather should be favorable for MST rollback during the day and for the evening launch. The next cold front will drop southward into northern Florida late on Saturday, but will remain relatively weak as it tracks through Central Florida early Sunday morning...The primary concern for launch is cumulus clouds forming in advance of the front, however they should be isolated and of minimal vertical extent."

Riding into space atop the rocket is the ninth Wideband Global SATCOM communications satellite, a craft funded by five partner nations in exchanged for global access to use any of the U.S. military's WGS spacecraft.

WGS 9 will join the growing constellation of WGS satellites in geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles above the Earth that provide global communications coverage to the U.S. military and allies.

"Procurement of this satellite was made possible by a Memorandum of understanding with Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and New Zealand. These international partners received access to the global constellation proportional to their investment in WGS 9 since the agreement was signed in January 2012," said Robert Tarleton, director of the Air Force's Military Satellite Communications Systems at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

The 10-satellite WGS constellation began launching in 2007 and will see its final member deployed in 2018, blanketing the entire planet with communications coverage for all branches of the U.S. military, the White House and State Department, plus Australia and the five allies that bought WGS 9.

The satellites supply maps and data to soldiers on the battlefield, relay video from unmanned aerial reconnaissance drones, route voice calls and messaging, and even offer quality-of-life considerations like television broadcasts and email delivery to the troops.

Supporting both X- and Ka-band communications, WGS spacecraft are the Department of Defense's highest capacity communications satellites.

Boeing is the builder of the WGS fleet and ULA has launched all of the craft to date. The final craft in the series will be deployed by the end of 2018.

"The launch of WGS 9 coincides with the celebration of the U.S. Air Force's 70th anniversary. WGS is just one of many examples of advancements military technology and I can't think of mission to recognize the Air Force's 70th birthday," said Tarleton.

"WGS is a key element in helping the Air Force win in the air, space and cyberspace domains, and we are honored to be flying the 70th anniversary logo on the fairing of the Delta 4."

The rocket's nose cone has the WGS 9 mission emblem and the 70th anniversary insignia just below it.

"I began my career as an Air Force officer and I'm honored to play a role celebrating the Air Force's accomplishments while safely delivering incredibly important assets, like WGS 9, to orbit," said Laura Maginnis, United Launch Alliance's vice president for Government Satellite Launch.

"As the logo states, the Air Force has been breaking barriers since 1947, and space superiority is a critical part of those contributions. It is hard to imagine a world without the capabilities provided by DMSP, AEHF, SBIRS, GPS and WGS constellations that we have launched together."

This will be the 35th Delta 4 rocket launch since 2002 and the 29th Delta 4 to fly from Cape Canaveral.

The two-stage rocket was processed in the Horizontal Integration Facility, then rolled to the pad. It was hydraulically raised into the vertical position atop the launch table on Jan. 12 and the solid boosters were attached sequentially over the following few days.

A fueling exercise occurred on Feb. 17 and the payload, already encapsulated in the rocket's five-meter nose cone, was transported to the pad for mating with the rocket on Feb. 24.\

March 18, 2017 by William Graham

United Launch Alliance's first Delta IV launch of 2017 will carry a Wideband Global Satcom spacecraft (WGS-9) into orbit Saturday. The lift off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station will occurr during a 75-minute launch window that opens at 19:44 local time (23:44 UTC).

 Delta IV Launch:

Saturday's launch will deploy the ninth satellite of the US Air Force's Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) constellation. WGS-9, which was purchased for the Air Force by a group of other nations in exchange for access to the WGS system, will join the eight satellites already in orbit which launched between 2007 and 2016.

Спойлер
Boeing was awarded a contract to develop the WGS system – with two satellites and an option for a third – in 2001, with the first launch scheduled for 2004. The option in the contract was converted to a firm order for a third spacecraft early in 2003.

The WGS program – named Wideband Gapfiller Satellite until 2007 – was initiated to augment the Defence Satellite Communications System (DSCS), providing new and enhanced capabilities and replacing older satellites as they reached the end of their operational lives. WGS spacecraft provide more than ten times the bandwidth of their predecessors – with a single spacecraft having greater bandwidth than the entire DSCS constellation combined. DSCS and WGS would have been replaced by the Transformational Satellite System (TSAT) constellation, however this was canceled in 2009.

Even before TSAT was canceled, the Air Force had begun to expand WGS; increasing the planned number of satellites from three to five in 2006. The Australian government agreed to finance a sixth satellite in exchange for access to the whole constellation, and this was ordered in October 2007. From the fourth satellite onwards the spacecraft have been upgraded with radio frequency (RF) bypass functionality for applications requiring extremely high bandwidth, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) deployed on reconnaissance missions.

Four further satellites, including the WGS-9 spacecraft which will launch on Saturday, were ordered between 2010 and 2012. These are designated as Block II Follow-On missions. From WGS-8 onwards, the satellites have been equipped with an upgraded digital channelizers, almost doubling the available downlink bandwidth.

Built by Boeing, WGS satellites are based on the BSS-702 platform and designed for fourteen years of service. Each spacecraft is equipped with an Aerojet Rocketdyne R-4D-15 High Performance Apogee Thruster (HiPAT) to perform insertion into geosynchronous orbit and four Xenon-Ion Propulsion System (XIPS-25) thrusters for stationkeeping.

The WGS-9 satellite carries X and Ka-band transponders. The satellite will use a phased array antenna to provide eight jam-resistant X-band beams, while ten individual antennae will provide Ka-band beams. An additional X-band payload will be used to provide Earth coverage. The satellite can support 8.088 gigahertz of bandwidth, with an expected downlink speed of up to 11 Gbps.

The first WGS satellite, USA-195 or WGS-1, launched aboard an Atlas V 421 in October 2007. The second satellite was also deployed by an Atlas, launching in April 2009.

Beginning with the third launch – in December 2009 – the Delta IV has been used for all subsequent launches, flying in the Delta IV Medium+(5,4) configuration.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/209017.jpg) (http://www.orbitalatk.com/)

This version of the Delta IV uses a single Common Booster Core first stage, four GEM-60 solid rocket motors and a five-metre Delta Cryogenic Second Stage (DCSS).

The Delta IV was developed by Boeing under the US Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program. Boeing inherited the Delta IV design from McDonnell Douglas in a 1997 merger, having had its own EELV proposal rejected the previous year. The Delta IV first flew in November 2002, three months after Lockheed Martin's rival design, the Atlas V, which was developed under the same program.

In 2003, following revelations that Boeing had illegally obtained tens of thousands of pages of documents from Lockheed Martin during the initial competition for EELV launch contracts, the Department of Defense (DoD) moved several launches which had been awarded to Boeing to the Atlas V and temporarily suspended Boeing from bidding for new launch contracts.

The dispute was resolved when the companies agreed to merge their launch operations, forming United Launch Alliance in December 2006 to offer Delta II, Delta IV and Atlas V launches to the US Government.

Saturday's launch will be the thirty-fifth flight of the Delta IV, which has achieved thirty-three successful launches in its previous missions.

The Delta IV Medium+(5,4) configuration has only been used for WGS launches. It is one of five configurations in which the Delta IV has launched; the Medium, which had a single core, no solid rocket motors and a four-metre DCSS, was the smallest version. Used for two launches in 2003 and a third in 2006, it is now effectively retired as no launches are scheduled and no new medium-class payloads are being assigned to the Delta.

The largest configuration, the Delta IV Heavy, uses three cores and a five-metre upper stage. Three intermediate, or Medium+, configurations – the M+(4,2), M+(5,2) and M+(5,4) – are used to launch intermediate payloads. These add two solid rocket motors, a five-metre upper stage and two further solid rocket motors respectively to the single-core vehicle.

United Launch Alliance intends to retire the single-core version of the Delta IV by 2019, with the Atlas V launching all medium and intermediate-class payloads until the introduction of a new rocket, Vulcan, which will replace both the Atlas V and Delta IV.

The Delta IV Heavy will remain flying until Vulcan has been upgraded to carry the US military's heaviest payloads, which can currently only fly aboard the Delta. Saturday's launch will be the second-to-last flight for the Delta IV Medium+(5,4).

The Delta IV will depart from Space Launch Complex 37B at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). The Delta launch complex is built on the site of a pad which was used in the 1960s for early test flights supporting the Apollo program.

The original Launch Complex 37B was the site of the first orbital launch of the Saturn I rocket, SA-5, in January 1964, before five further launches with boilerplate Apollo spacecraft. After the Saturn I was retired, two Saturn IB launches were made from LC-37B, the first testing the rocket's S-IVB stage in orbit and the second, Apollo 5, marked the first unmanned test flight of the Apollo Lunar Module.

The Saturn launch complex having been demolished in the 1970s, Delta's launch pad at Complex 37 was constructed in preparation for the Delta IV's maiden flight, which occurred from SLC-37B in November 2002.

Saturday's launch will begin with ignition of the Delta IV's RS-68A main engine, five seconds before the countdown reaches zero. Burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, the RS-68A powers the Common Booster Core (CBC) that form's Delta's first stage. At the zero-second mark in the countdown, the four GEM-60 solid rocket motors will ignite, and the rocket – whose mission number is Delta 377 – will lift off.

Seven seconds into its flight, Delta 377 will begin a series of pitch, yaw and roll manoeuvres to place it on course for orbit. The rocket will fly east downrange along an azimuth of 93.46 degrees, passing through the area of maximum dynamic pressure – Max-Q – 46.1 seconds after liftoff.

The solid rocket motors will begin to burn out 92.8 seconds after launch, with boosters three and four burning out 2.3 seconds ahead of boosters one and two. The two pairs of boosters will separate eight seconds after their respective burnouts.

Three minutes and 14.6 seconds into the mission, the payload fairing will separate from around the WGS-9 satellite at the nose of the rocket. By this point, the rocket will have cleared the lower regions of Earth's atmosphere and the fairing will no longer be needed to protect the spacecraft.

The Common Booster Core will complete its burn three minutes and 56.5 seconds after liftoff. The spent stage will be jettisoned 6.6 seconds later. After stage separation, the second stage – a five-metre Delta Cryogenic Second Stage (DCSS) – will deploy the extendible nozzle of its RL10B-2 engine ahead of ignition. The RL10B-2 will ignite thirteen seconds after staging to begin its first burn.

The DCSS, which like the first stage burns liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, will make two burns to deploy WGS-9 into its planned orbit, with a third burn after spacecraft separation to deorbit itself. The first burn will be the longest, lasting fifteen minutes and 37.5 seconds, and will establish the rocket in an initial parking orbit. Nine minutes and 33 seconds after the first burn ends the second will begin, raising the apogee of Delta 377's orbit. This burn will last three minutes and 9.7 seconds.

Spacecraft separation will occur at 41 minutes, 45.6 seconds mission elapsed time, nine minutes and 10.3 seconds after the end of the second burn. WGS-9 will be deployed into a supersynchronous transfer orbit with a perigee of 435 kilometers (270 miles, 235 nautical miles), an apogee of 44,372 kilometres (27,572 miles, 23,959 nautical miles) and an inclination of 27 degrees to the equator. From this orbit, the satellite will use its R-4D apogee motor to raise itself into geostationary orbit.

The second stage will begin its third and final burn twenty-nine minutes and 59 seconds after spacecraft separation.

This ten-second deorbit burn will lower its orbit's perigee so that the stage reenters Earth's atmosphere at the end of its first orbit. Because of the orbit's high apogee, the stage will take another eleven hours to complete this one revolution, while the Earth rotates underneath such that the stage will reenter over the western Pacific. ULA states that the expected impact time for any debris surviving reentry will be twelve hours, twelve minutes and 9.6 seconds mission elapsed time.

Saturday's launch is the third of the year for United Launch Alliance, who conducted Atlas V launches in January and early March to deploy the SBIRS-GEO-3 missile-detection satellite and NROL-79 – a pair of Intruder signals intelligence satellites – respectively. ULA's next launch is scheduled for next Saturday, with another Atlas V due to carry the SS John Glenn – Orbital ATK's OA-7 Cygnus mission to resupply the International Space Station.

The next Delta launch is scheduled for September, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) JPSS-1 weather satellite lifting off aboard the penultimate flight of ULA's venerable Delta II rocket. The Delta IV's next launch will occur in October, with the NROL-47 satellite, which is expected to be a Topaz radar imaging spacecraft.

Only one further WGS satellite, WGS-10, is currently scheduled for launch. This is slated to lift off in 2019, aboard the final single-core Delta IV launch.

The 330-foot-tall mobile service tower has been retracted at Cape Canaveral's pad 37B for this evening's launch of the Delta 4 rocket that will place the Wideband Global SATCOM satellite No. 9 into space for the U.S. military and allied nations.

Спойлер
The wheeled structure moved along rail tracks to its launch position about the length of a football field away from the rocket. The 9-million pound tower shielded the Delta from the elements during the its stay on the pad, provided workers 360-degree access to the various areas on the vehicle and was used to attach the solid rocket boosters and payload during the launch campaign. The tower is 90 feet wide and 40 feet deep.

Crews will spend the next couple of hours securing the complex for launch before leaving the danger area around the pad. All workers must be clear of the area for the start of hazardous operations in the countdown, which include fueling the Delta 4's first and second stages with supercold liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants.

Testing of communications links between the rocket and Air Force Eastern Range will occur after fueling is accomplished. Steering checks of the RS-68A engine and upper stage RL10B-2 powerplant are on tap in the last hour of the count.

A build-in hold is slated for T-minus 4 minutes, during which time teams will go through final polling to grant clearance to launch. The Delta 4 will transition to internal power as the count resumes, ordnance will be armed and the propellant tanks pressurized as clocks target the main engine ignition time at T-minus 5 seconds.

Liftoff remains scheduled for 7:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT).

"The WGS 9 launch marks a significant occasion for the WGS
constellation as it is the fielding of a satellite procured under a
partnership with Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and New
Zealand providing not only U.S. forces, but also our international partners with enhanced communications capabilities and increased coverage," said Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, commander of the Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center.

In the pre-fueling weather update, all conditions are favorable at Cape Canaveral for liftoff of the United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket.

The odds of acceptable weather for an on-time launch this evening at 7:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT) are "greater than" 90 percent. The outlook calls for just a few clouds, acceptable winds and a temperature of 66 degrees F.

Development of cumulus clouds is the only real concern, but meteorologists say it is unlikely with today's atmospheric conditions.

The cold gas chilldown conditioning of the liquid hydrogen system has been accomplished. Liquid hydrogen propellant will begin to flow into the Common Booster Core in "slow-fill" mode. That is sped up to "fast-fill" after a small portion of the tank is loaded.

Chilled to Minus-423 degrees Fahrenheit, the liquid hydrogen will be consumed by the RS-68A main engine along with liquid oxygen during the first four minutes of the launch.

Now three hours till launch. The Delta 4 rocket is being loaded with supercold liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as the countdown rolls on for launch at 7:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT).

Complex 37 has two giant sphere-shaped fuel tanks to store the cryogenic liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The LOX tank holds 250,000 gallons and LH2 sphere about 850,000 gallons.

The cryogenics are fed from the storage tanks through pipelines to the pad. For the Common Booster Core, the propellants are routed up to the launch table upon which the rocket sits. Tail service masts, the large box-like structures at the base of the vehicle, feed the oxygen and hydrogen to the booster via separate umbilicals.

The upper stage receives its cryos from the middle swing arm that extends from the Fixed Umbilical Tower to the front-side of the rocket.

Launch minus 20 minutes! United Launch Alliance's Delta 4 has been a workhorse for U.S. military and national security spacecraft since entering service in 2002.
Спойлер
The vehicle stands 217 feet tall, weighs about 900,000 pounds fully fueled and will unleash 1.8 million pounds of thrust at launch.

The rocket comes off the pad powered by an Aerojet Rocketdyne RS-68A engine on the Common Booster Core first stage and four Orbital ATK GEM-60 solid rocket boosters.

The throttleable RS-68A engine burns liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to produce 702,000 pounds of thrust. The stage measures 155 feet in length with interstage permanently attached, 16.7 feet in diameter and is covered in orange insulating foam.

The Graphite Epoxy Motor (GEM) series originated with the GEM-40 motor that was developed for the Delta 2 rocket a quarter-century ago. Cases are filament wound by computer-controlled winding machines using high-strength graphite fiber and durable epoxy resin. The "60" indicates the diameter in inches. Each GEM-60 produces a maximum of 280,000 pounds of thrust.

The cryogenic upper stage also burns liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to power its single Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10B-2 engine for 24,750 pounds of thrust. It features a cone-shaped carbon-carbon extendible nozzle that is 7 feet in diameter.

T+plus 10 minutes. The upper stage is the larger five-meter version that has flown previously on the Delta 4-Heavy vehicle, WGS missions and two National Reconnaissance Office launches. It is an element that distinguishes this Medium+ (5,4) rocket configuration from other variants use four-meter upper stages for lower-weight payloads.

Today's stage has a wider liquid hydrogen tank and a lengthened liquid oxygen tank to carry additional propellants, enabling the RL10 engine to fire longer and carry heftier cargos.

The Air Force has been breaking barriers since 1947 and the successful WGS-9 launch marks an important occasion for the Wideband constellation as it is a major milestone in a 20-year multilateral partnership.

In January 2012, the United States, Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and New Zealand signed a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding with the United States, agreeing to fund the procurement of the ninth WGS satellite. The U.S. is responsible for funding the launch, operation and sustainment of WGS-9. International partners will receive a proportional share of the bandwidth provided by the WGS constellation based on financial contribution.

The WGS constellation is the highest-capacity military communications system in the U.S. Department of Defense arsenal. WGS supports a wide variety of missions for Combatant Commanders around the world to perform missions, from search and rescue efforts to military operations.  Air Force Space Command's Space and Missile Systems Center is the Air Force's center for acquiring and developing military space systems.
The addition of WGS-9 to the constellation will increase speed, reliability, and effectiveness for the warfighter, which enables the U.S. and international partners to more efficiently coordinate on missions in the air, on land and by sea.

According to Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th Space Wing commander and mission Launch Decision Authority, the fourth major launch operation on the Eastern Range this year, and second successful launch in just two and a half days, culminates many long hours and hard work by the entire mission team.

"Thanks to the amazing commitment, focus on the mission, and teamwork the men and women of the 45th Space Wing share with our mission partners at SMC and ULA, we successfully launched the next satellite in the WGS constellation," he said. "This mission demonstrates the Air Force's commitment to deliver secure and reliable satellite communications around the globe to U.S. forces and our allies.  It also once again showcases why the 45th Space Wing is the 'World's Premiere Gateway to Space.'"

Delta IV WGS-9 Mission Overview (http://www.ulalaunch.com/uploads/docs/Mission_Booklets/DIV/div_wgs9_mob.pdf)

Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., (March 18, 2017) – A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta IV rocket carrying the ninth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS-9) satellite for the United States Air Force lifted off from Space Launch Complex-37 on March 18 at 8:18 p.m. EDT.

"This launch commemorates the 70th anniversary of the USAF." said Laura Maginnis, ULA vice president of Government Satellite Launch. "We are absolutely honored to play a role in this important milestone, while safely delivering WGS-9 to orbit."

This mission was launched aboard a Delta IV Medium+ (5, 4) configuration Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) powered by one common booster core and four solid rocket motors built by Orbital ATK. The common booster core was powered by an RS-68A liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen engine producing 705,250 pounds of thrust at sea level. A single RL10B-2 liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen engine powered the second stage. The booster and upper stage engines are both built by Aerojet Rocketdyne. ULA constructed the Delta IV Medium+ (5,4) launch vehicle in Decatur, Alabama.

This is ULA's 3rd launch in 2017 and the 118th successful launch since the company was formed in December 2006.

"Thank you to the women and men of United Launch Alliance and all of our teammates who have worked tirelessly together to ensure today's mission success," said Maginnis. "The team's number one priority was safely and reliably delivering one of our nation's most critical satellites."

WGS-9, the third Block II Follow-on satellite, supports communications links in the X-band and Ka-band spectra. The WGS-9 satellite will be able filter and downlink up to 8.088 GHz of bandwidth. WGS satellites are an important element of a new high-capacity satellite communications system providing enhanced communications capability to our troops in the field.

The EELV program was established by the U.S. Air Force to provide assured access to space for Department of Defense and other government payloads. The commercially developed EELV program supports the full range of government mission requirements, while delivering on schedule and providing significant cost savings over the heritage launch systems.

With more than a century of combined heritage, United Launch Alliance is the nation's most experienced and reliable launch service provider. ULA has successfully delivered more than 115 satellites to orbit that provide critical capabilities for troops in the field, aid meteorologists in tracking severe weather, enable personal device-based GPS navigation and unlock the mysteries of our solar system.

 March 19, 2017 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2017/03/)     Justin Ray (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/justin-sfn-ray/)

CAPE CANAVERAL — With an international flair for collaboration, a military communications satellite jointly purchased by five allies was rocketed in space Saturday to further expand the U.S.-operated network that serves battlefield forces anywhere on Earth.

The Wideband Global SATCOM satellite No. 9, which will act like an information router in space, was successfully propelled into orbit by a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket fr om Cape Canaveral.

The 8:18 p.m. EDT (0018 GMT) liftoff occurred fr om Complex 37 following an afternoon loading of 170,000 gallons of cryogenic propellant into the two-stage rocket.

Three swing arms fr om the launch tower pulled away as the 217-foot-tall Delta roared skyward with a 2-to-1 thrust-to-weight ratio.

Less than 42 minutes later over the Indian Ocean. the $424 million payload was deployed into a super-synchronous transfer orbit as planned.

"Successfully putting our most critical satellites in orbit, at the right spot, time and time again is only made possible through a tremendously effective partnership with our launch vehicle provider United Launch Alliance," said Col. Shane Clark, the Air Force's mission director for the WGS 9 launch and EELV Generation operations division chief at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

It marked the 108th successful launch in a row for the Delta program since 1999, the 361st success overall since 1960 and the 35th for a Delta 4.

United Launch Alliance also extended its mission record to 118 and completed its 47th mission for the Air Force in the past 123 months.

WGS 9 will spend the next three months using its conventional and xenon-ion propulsion systems to reach a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the equator and slide into a testing slot. It will enter service later this year for a yet-undisclosed coverage zone.

This new satellite is unique because Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and New Zealand paid for construction of WGS 9 in a collaborative effort to join the U.S. military's global communications network.

Each nation receives bandwidth allocations via any of the WGS satellites in the worldwide constellation in proportions equal to their investment in WGS 9.

The WGS 9 deal allows the U.S. to bolster its communications infrastructure with an additional satellite while the allies get access to the anytime, anywhere connectivity that WGS provides around the globe.

Brigadier-General Blaise Frawley, director general for space, Royal Canadian Air Force: "Military operations are increasingly dependent on capabilities based in space and the Canadian Armed Forces recognizes this fact. The WGS 9 will further enhance a reliable Satcom network, and ensure our forces at home and abroad can communicate effectively to enable success on operations."

Navy Capt. Kim Meier, director of air force systems at the Danish Acquisition and Logistics Organization: "With the successful launch of the ninth WGS satellite we have reached an important milestone in the international MILSATCOM partnership. The WGS satellites are giving our warfighters quick and reliable access to information which is essential to the success of any military operation."

Navy Commodore Ludger Brummelaar, projects director of the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation: "The launch of WGS 9 symbolizes the successful partnership in military satellite communication. The cooperation is not only a success in the space segment, but also on the ground, wh ere the participating nations share their anchor stations and other SATCOM resources. WGS enables smaller countries, as the Netherlands, to have access to reliable global satellite communication. It is a prime example of international military cooperation."

Etienne Schneider, deputy prime minister of Luxembourg: "As an established satellite nation, Luxembourg is proud to participate in the WGS program. In the current geopolitical context, access to satellite capacity is essential for most military endeavors. Luxembourg can thus make a concrete contribution to security in the context of its NATO commitments."

Lt. Col. James Dryburgh, New Zealand deputy director of C4 Operations: "WGS has provided the cornerstone of the New Zealand Defence Force's Satellite communications capability since the purchase of our first ground terminals following our entrance into the WGS partnership. It has provided us with solid and reliable communications bearer connectivity from the first deployment and the cooperation from the WGS support team and the partner nations has been outstanding."

"The WGS constellation is the highest-capacity military communications system in the U.S. Department of Defense arsenal," said Robert Tarleton, director of the Air Force's Military Satellite Communications Systems at the Space and Missile Systems Center.

"WGS really supports the tactical warfighter and our international partners around the world, whether on land, in the air or at sea. It has the Global Broadcast capability that provides the delivery of classified and unclassified data and video products for mission support and full mission video (from) our UAVs."

The WGS constellation is the modernized follow-on to the Defense Satellite Communications System that dates back to 1966 and is the Air Force's longest-running communications network with launches through 2003.

"We still have four DSCS that we are still using. They continue to be part of our overall military constellation that we can access," said Tarleton.

"The transformation from DSCS to WGS is a lot more bandwidth as well as the addition of military Ka communications and crossbanding on the satellite between X- and Ka-bands. That allows the warfighter to seamlessly talk between their terminal types."

One final WGS satellite — No. 10 — is built and awaiting pre-launch testing ahead of a late 2018 deployment aboard another Delta 4 rocket.

"We will be moving forward to (WGS) 10 to launch late next year. And yes, as far as the WGS program, that is the last satellite in the program," said Tarleton.

"There were some interest for a while with several nations to try to fund a WGS 11 and that just didn't materialize, frankly. We will not be buying another WGS, we are past the point wh ere we could buy it with any efficient cost since the production line is basically shut down."

But the longer-term future for U.S. wideband communications services is uncertain while the Pentagon studies its options.

"What we are looking at for the follow-on to WGS is being worked within the Department of Defense now in the Analysis of Alternatives as to what's the best way to meet our wideband satcom requirements in the future — whether it's more, big satellites, purpose-built just for military use, whether it's using more commercial satellites or leasing, and what's the combination. That effort is in work right now. That will steer what we buy (and) wh ere we go for meeting our wideband needs," said Tarleton.

"To build a new system, we need to get started within the next couple of years because we are targeting the late 2020s — 2028-2029 — to have the next system, whatever that may be, ready to take the place of WGS.

"If we are working to purchase bits from commercial services, which is something we are really looking at as the commercial industry gets more and more capable and actually, probably, moves moves faster than we can within the Department of Defense as far as enhancing their capabilities, as they become more protected in comms against interference or jamming, those are the things we are looking at as part of the trade-off.

"If we had to go buy another WGS — if we followed that path, which I don't expect — we would need to do that within the next couple of years. If we can build on commercial and utilize their systems that tend to be put in place and built in three to four years, we are not as rushed."

The first 7 satellites in the WGS series are optional. The eighth craft, launched last December, reached its test slot in geostationary orbit a week ago.

"With WGS 8 and 9, we expect to have both in operational use later this year," said Tarleton.

WGS 1 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/atlas/av011/status.html) was launched in October 2007 to cover the vast U.S. Pacific Command that stretches from the U.S. western coast all the way to Southeast Asia.

WGS 2 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/atlas/av016/status.html) satellite followed with an April 2009 launch to serve U.S. Central Command and the forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of Southwest Asia.

WGS 3 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d346/status.html) went up in December 2009 to cover U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, plus lend additional support over the Middle East.

WGS 4 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d358/status.html) inaugurated the upgraded Block 2 series for improved communications with unmanned aerial drones when it was launched in January 2012 to cover the Middle East and Southeast Asia for use by U.S. Central Command and U.S. Pacific Command.

WGS 5 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d362/status.html) extended the Wideband Global SATCOM constellation to the Americas for a host of users following launch in May 2013. It gives the CONUS coverage to U.S. Northern Command, Southern Command, Transportation Command, Strategic Command, the Missile Defense Agency and other U.S. and western hemisphere-based users.

WGS 6 (http://www.spaceflightnow.com/delta/d363/status.html) was launched in August 2013 and serves as Australia's contribution to the Wideband Global SATCOM constellation. It was built and launched via Australian funding in exchange for its military getting a percentage of communications services through the global constellation. The craft is parked over the eastern Pacific for coverage of the Americas.

WGS 7 (http://spaceflightnow.com/2015/07/24/recap-story-7th-satellite-in-air-forces-wgs-series-launched/) was launched in July 2015 to further fortify the military's "anytime, anywhere" communications infrastructure, adding to the global WGS system from its position above the western Pacific with a coverage area spanning the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia.

WGS 8 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2016/12/06/d376_journal/) reached its orbital checkout position just last week following a successful launch in December. It features the first Wideband Digital Channelizer that nearly doubles its capacity compared to the previous satellites in the WGS series.

The communications satellite will increase interoperability among the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and New Zealand

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., March 18, 2017 – Boeing's [NYSE: BA] ninth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite launched into orbit today and will provide the United States and six allied nations with increased communications capabilities to prevent, protect against and respond to attacks.
Спойлер
The WGS-9 satellite was funded through an agreement between the United States and Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and New Zealand, and will also serve Australia (which funded the WGS-6 satellite). Each partner country gains access to the capabilities provided by the full WGS system, which include flexible and secure communication transmissions in the X- and Ka-band frequencies.

"This unique international collaboration increases military interoperability and expands affordable high-data-rate communications for U.S. and allied partners around the globe," said Rico Attanasio, executive director, Boeing Department of Defense/Civil Satellite Programs. "WGS-9 is among the most capable military communication satellites on orbit today."

WGS-9 launched on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket. Boeing is on contract for 10 WGS satellites, the last of which is tentatively scheduled for launch in 2018.

The eighth, ninth and tenth WGS satellites include upgraded digital channelizers that nearly double the available bandwidth of earlier satellites in the series.

A Boeing video about WGS's anti-jam capabilities is available at www.boeing.com/features/2016/11/innovation-wgs-11-16.page (http://www.boeing.com/features/2016/11/innovation-wgs-11-16.page).
