Hispasat 36W-1 [ESA / Pierre Carril]

In May 2008 ESA and Hispasat S.A. (Spain) signed a preliminary authorisation to proceed for the Small GEO Mission Hispasat AG1 (HAG1, Hispasat Advanced Generation 1). It was renamed Hispasat 36W-1 in March 2016. This will launch the initial activities of an industrial consortium led by Hispasat.
The signing took place in the presence of representatives from the German Space Agency (DLR), the Spanish Delegation to ESA (CDTI) and OHB-System AG.
The Small GEO Programme is aimed at the development of a small, general-purpose geostationary satellite platform, which will enable European industry to compete effectively in the commercial telecom market for small platforms.
To achieve this objective, ESA has established an element in its ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) Programme. This element, known as ARTES 11, is divided into two parts. The first part covers the development of a platform supporting a payload mass of up to 300 kg, a payload power demand of up to 3 kW, and an operational lifetime of up to 15 years. The second part, the subject of the preliminary authorization to proceed that has just been signed, involves the development and launch of a Small GEO satellite and associated mission to provide flight qualification and in-orbit demonstration for the platform.
The resulting satellite, Hispasat AG1, will serve as an important and distinctive asset in Hispasat's satellite fleet with:
    [/li]
  • a communication capacity of up to 24 transponders in Ku-band and three transponders in Ka-band
  • a highly innovative payload, REDSAT, led by Spanish industry.
The REDSAT payload includes an active Direct Radiating Array (DRA) antenna providing four reconfigurable uplink beams in Ku-band and an advanced on-board processor providing four regenerative channels of 36 MHz.
Hispasat, a leading operator for the Spanish and Portuguese speaking markets, will be in position to push European innovative technologies to the telecommunications satellite commercial arena leading to the exploitation of enhanced services.
To develop the mission, Hispasat has built the necessary industrial team to implement all the programme elements. OHB-System AG will act as the Satellite Prime Contractor. TESAT GmbH (Germany) will be the Payload Prime and will be responsible for the integration of the Transparent Repeater (produced by TESAT) and the REDSAT payload. The development of the REDSAT payload will be led by Thales Alenia Space-España, who will coordinate a group of mainly Spanish companies. Thales Alenia Space-España is responsible for the on-board processor and EADS CASA (Spain) is responsible for the reflector and DRA antennas.
The satellite was booked for an Arianespace launch. Originally it was to fly as a co-passenger on an Ariane-5ECA (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_det/ariane-5eca.htm), but in late 2016 it was moved to a dedicated Soyuz-STB Fregat-MT (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_det/soyuz-stb_fregat-mt.htm) rocket. After severals delays from 2012, launch is planned for January 2017.

Flight VS16 – First-ever mission to geostationary orbit with Soyuz from the Guiana Space Center to launch Hispasat satellite

For its year-opening launch of 2017, Arianespace will orbit the Hispasat 36W-1 geostationary satellite for the Spanish operator Hispasat using a Soyuz launch vehicle.

Designated Flight VS16 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, this mission will be the first-ever mission to geostationary transfer orbit performed by Soyuz from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana.

Hispasat 36W-1 is the first satellite to be built using Europe's new "SmallGEO" platform developed by OHB System AG (Germany) under ESA's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program.

The launch will be from the Soyuz Launch Complex (ELS) in Sinnamary, French Guiana.

The launcher will be carrying a total payload of 3,343 kg.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Thursday, January 26, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Hispasat 36W-1 is a telecommunications satellite for Hispasat, and the first to be built using Europe's new "SmallGEO" platform.

Hispasat is the Spanish satellite communications operator, a leader in the distribution of content in Spanish and Portu-guese. With more than 25 years' experience, the Hispasat Group maintains an important presence on the Iberian Penin-sula and in Latin America, wh ere it is now the fourth-largest satellite operator.

From its orbital position at 36 deg. West, Hispasat 36W-1 will allow Hispasat to provide a wide range of telecommunica-tions services in Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands and South America.
Hispasat 36W-1 was built by OHB System AG in Bremen, Germany, using a SmallGEO platform.
Developed by OHB System AG under ESA's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program, the SmallGEO platform line offers satellite operators an entirely European solution in the smaller telecom satellite market.

The Soyuz launcher is transferred by rail from the Spaceport's MIK assembly facility to the ELS launch zone.

Soyuz was moved from the Spaceport's MIK launcher assembly facility to the ELS launch zone, using a transport/erector rail car in a horizontal transfer process. When positioned over the launch pad, the vehicle was erected into a vertical orientation, wh ere it is suspended in place by four large support arms.
With this step's completion, the mobile gantry was moved into position around the basic three-stage launcher – providing protection for the upcoming installation of Soyuz' "upper composite," which consists of the Hispasat 36W-1 spacecraft, plus the Fregat upper stage and payload fairing.

Flight VS16: a mission with several "firsts"
Friday's mission, designated Flight VS16 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, will be the first for Soyuz to geostationary transfer orbit in the medium-lift vehicle's operations from the Spaceport. Soyuz was introduced at French Guiana in 2011, and has performed 15 missions to date from the South America facility.
Another first for Flight VS16 is the Hispasat 36W-1 passenger – the initial telecommunications satellite to use the SmallGEO series platform, developed under the European Space Agency's (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) program. Its design and manufacture was performed by Germany's OHB System AG.
Once in orbit at a position of 36 deg. West, the three-metric-ton-category telecommunications platform will provide relay coverage and multimedia services across Europe, the Canary Islands and South America at the service of Hispasat – a world leader in Spanish and Portuguese broadcasting.

Bremen, January 23, 2017. At a joint information event held with the German Aerospace Center DLR, OHB System AG commenced the unofficial countdown for the launch of the first satellite from the SmallGEO range, H36W-1. Roughly 60 guests from the space sector as well as the political arena accepted an invitation to find out more about Europe's new Germany-made geostationary satellite platform.
"The SmallGEO platform has restored system capabilities for German telecommunications satellites after a hiatus of a good 20 years," said Marco Fuchs, CEO of OHB System AG, going on to say that the launch of the satellite was of particular importance for OHB for a number of different reasons: "Our vision of developing a geostationary satellite in the 3-ton class for the commercial market has become reality: this marks the first time that an OHB-developed telecommunications satellite is being launched. We have designed and built H36W-1 for our first commercial customer, the Spanish satellite operator HISPASAT."
In his greeting words, the Senator for the Economy, Labor and Ports of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Martin Günthner, said that the SmallGEO was a "genuine son of Bremen": "The idea of entering a new market below the one for conventional large geostationary satellites with smaller flexible satellites was forged by space visionary Manfred Fuchs and was designed and developed in the 'City of Space'," he said.

Bearing the name "H36W-1", the first SmallGEO satellite is currently being readied at the ESA spaceport in Kourou for its launch in the night from January 27, 2017 to January 28, 2017. The telecommunications satellite is based on the new SmallGEO satellite platform developed by OHB System AG under the European Space Agency's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program. H36W-1 was developed in a public-private partnership comprising the ESA, Spanish satellite operator HISPASAT and space systems specialist OHB System AG. After being integrated in HISPASAT's fleet of satellites, H36W-1 will orbit at an altitude of 36,000 km, wh ere it will help to supply Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands and South America with multimedia services. Hispasat 36W-1 features the innovative RedSAT regenerative payload, made up of a processor and an antenna that actively receives reconfigurable beams to provide HISPASAT with greater flexibility in its communication services.
Gerd Gruppe is the DLR Executive Board Member responsible for the Space Administration in Bonn. He manages and oversees Germany's contributions to the European Space Agency as well as the national space program on behalf of the German Federal Government. At the event, Gruppe emphasised the importance of the SmallGEO program for Germany: "With SmallGEO, Germany is gaining a new system capability. This makes our industry stronger - even in the competitive international market. Furthermore, this is a key objective of Germany's space strategy."
Thanks to the contribution of OHB as the general contractor, Tesat-Spacecom GmbH from Backnang as the principal contractor for the telecommunications payload and Jena Optronik GmbH as the supplier of the star sensors alongside other small and mid-sized companies, German manufacturing content for H36W-1 is extraordinarily large. Representatives of Tesat-Spacecom GmbH and Jena Optronik GmbH were also present at today's event to answer any questions. Managing director of Tesat-Spacecom Günther Adam described the unique features of the payload: "At long last, our telecommunications payloads from Backnang have found in SmallGeo an optimum German-sourced satellite bus. That is why we are all the more delighted to be involved in the next European SmallGEO satellite project, EDRS-C, after the completion of H36W-1."
SmallGEO configurations: Conventional, fully electric or hybrid

The SmallGeo platform has a modular structure and is highly versatile due to the different possible configurations. The conventional configuration with a chemical propulsion system ensures earliest possible deployment thanks to minimum transfer times to the geostationary orbit after the satellite has been separated from the launcher. The FLEX configuration features a fully electric propulsion system, allowing the payload capacity to be almost doubled despite the same satellite mass. A further configuration combining a chemical apogee motor with electric propulsion systems is optimized for Earth observation applications. Accordingly, COO Andreas Lindenthal is confident about the future of the SmallGEO family. "With SmallGEO we are entering into a market with a great future. We not only have strong demand on the part of commercial customers but are also able to address the institutional market to optimum effect in both the telecommunications segment and with Earth observation. In addition, the SmallGEO family is an innovation platform that will generate decisive impetus for all programs in the OHB Group."

  January 25, 2017 - Press release
Ku band active antenna is a first for European commercial telecommunications
Satellite can be reconfigured in-orbit, giving operator greater flexibility

Madrid, 25/01/2017 - Hispasat 36W-1 (AG-1) will be the first satellite to use active Ku band antennas. Following its launch planned for 27th January, it will supply multimedia services with 20 transponders in Ku band and 3 in Ka band to Europe as well as the Canary Islands and South America.
As the provider of the satellite's antenna system, Airbus Defence and Space in Spain supplied a total of three classic antenna reflectors and the first multibeam active antenna for commercial satellite communications in Europe.
Carbon fibre reflector technology without paint was used for the first time in the manufacture of the deployable antennas, allowing for mass and cost savings plus a slight increase in the amount of data transmitted. This is thanks to an innovative use of carbon fibre materials with high thermal control efficiency that permit the development of new solutions through the intelligent use of advanced materials.
These antennas incorporate the high performance motorised Antenna Deployment and Pointing Mechanism (ADPM) developed by Airbus Defence and Space. This mechanism allows, for the first time, the delivery of a complete antenna system that includes deployable reflector, hold-down and release mechanisms, as well as the deployment mechanisms.
Hispasat 36W-1 satellite will also include the first multibeam active antenna reconfigurable in orbit (DRA/ELSA - Direct Radiating Array ELectronically Steerable Antenna) for telecom satellites, opening the door for future missions. This reception active antenna with printed radiators in Ku band offers 4 independent 36 MHz reconfigurable beams.
The antenna's flexibility allows the generation of variable width spots including commutable beams (beam hopping). These capabilities can be implemented on each beam either independently or simultaneously. The operator can reconfigure the radio frequency beams over the coverage zone, permitting an unprecedented flexibility in multimedia and broadcasting services over South America, Europe and the Canary Islands.
The capacity to mitigate possible interferences intended or not, is generating new specific products such as GEO localisation of those interferences. These innovations will be incorporated into the next generation of active antennas.
The project was developed over 4 years with an industrial structure in which Airbus Defence and Space in Spain led a group of almost a dozen European subcontractor companies to build this advanced subsystem as part of the Payload from TESAT-Spacecom. The group included a large number of Spanish companies such as TECNOBIT (Grupo Oesía), Indra, IberEspacio, Arquimea, Elatesa, Rymsa, ALTER, TTI Norte and CTI.
Antenna conception and manufacture is one of the Airbus Defence and Space's strengths in Spain. DRA/ELSA builds on previous developments like the In-orbit Reconfigurable Multibeam Antenna (IRMA) antenna on board SpainSAT for military secured communications, and the active antenna for Gaia that transmits large amounts of data as the spacecraft maps a billion stars. Both these systems are operating nominally in orbit today.
This technology is constantly evolving, and Airbus Defence and Space is already preparing the future generation antennas within the Quantum satellite programme.

Multinational launch provider Arianespace (http://www.arianespace.com/) is gearing up to launch the Hispasat 36W-1 telecommunications satellite – alternatively known as Hispasat AG1 – from their spaceport facility (http://www.arianespace.com/spaceport-facility/) in Kourou, French Guiana, and will be their first in 2017. Launch of the new-model communications satellite is set for January 27, 2017, with a liftoff time of 8:03 p.m. EST (01:03 GMT on January 28 ) .

Hispasat will launch atop a Europeanized Soyuz ST-B launch vehicle, which is an upgraded version of the venerable Russian launcher that has seen decades of successful use.
The Soyuz family has been a workhorse of the Soviet and Russian space programs since 1957, racking up more than 1,800 launches in the past 60 years, and is capable of lofting more than 7,100 pounds (3,250 kilograms) to a geosynchronous transfer orbit in the more powerful ST-B configuration often flown by Arianespace.
The Soyuz's first stage is composed of a core, surrounded by four strap-on liquid-fueled boosters – an iconic design, which is immediately recognizable by the distinctive look of the four boosters as they taper to meet the core stage.
The core stage and side boosters make use of slightly different versions of the same family of the Russian-manufactured engine – the RD-107A on the boosters and the RD-108A on the core. Both engine types are powered by a single turbopump assembly feeding liquid oxygen (LOX) and highly refined kerosene (RP-1) into four independent combustion chambers.
The primary difference between the two is the amount of control authority the engines provide via their integrated vernier thrusters. The side boosters don't need to provide a large amount of control authority over the vehicle and are only outfitted with a pair of verniers per engine. The core stage's RD-108A, however, needs a full range of attitude control and is, therefore, designed with four verniers.
Though both the RD-107A and RD-108A are based off the same design, their output is somewhat different. The boosters each provide 188,500 pounds (838.5 kilonewtons) of sea-level thrust – for a total of 754,000 pounds (3,354 kilonewtons) of supplemental power during their two minutes of operation – while the core stage provides a bit less at 178,100 pounds (792.5 kilonewtons).
The Soyuz's second stage is powered by the Russian-made RD-0124. Like its larger RD-107A/180A cousins, the RD-0124 has four combustion chambers, into which is fed LOX and RP-1 from a single turbopump system. The smaller RD-0124 provides nearly 67,000 pounds (297.9 kilonewtons) of vacuum thrust.
The upper stage for the Hispasat launch will be the Russian Fregat-MT and is responsible for placing the communications satellite into the proper geostationary transfer orbit. The Fregat-MT had an issue placing two Galileo navigation satellites into their proper orbit in 2014 – a failure (http://www.spaceflightinsider.com/organizations/arianespace/arianespace-announces-cause-galileo-launch-anomaly/) attributed to the hydrazine propellant freezing in the lines feeding the thrusters – but has seen several successful missions since, following a redesign to mitigate the issue contributing to the frozen fuel.

Flying atop the Soyuz is the Hispasat 36W-1 telecommunications satellite. The spacecraft is a new design – the first built on the modular SmallGEO satellite platform, which was developed by an industrial consortium led by OHB System (https://www.ohb-system.de/main-company.html), along with partners OHB Sweden (http://www.ohb-sweden.se/) and LuxSpace (http://www.luxspace.lu/).
The Hispasat 36W-1 satellite is a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA (http://www.esa.int/ESA)) and satellite operator Hispasat (http://www.hispasat.com/en) and will serve as an on-orbit demonstration model, in addition to providing commercial communications services.
The satellite bus has both chemical and electric thrusters – for orbital maneuvers and stationkeeping, respectively – along with power generating capability near 10 kilowatts provided via a pair of solar arrays to service both the spacecraft's core functions and commercial operations.
Outfitted with 3 Ka-band and 20 Ku-band transponders, Hispasat 36W-1 will provide communications coverage to Europe, the Canary Islands, and South America, and is outfitted with the Redsat (http://www.hispasat.com/en/innovation/satellite-innovation) hardware, which will process four Ku-band channels simultaneously and provide high-quality data services to four adjustable zones in its service area.
The 7,055-pound (3,200-kilogram) satellite is at the top end of the Soyuz ST-B's GTO lift capacity and is designed to have an on-orbit lifetime of 15 years.
 LOOKING AHEAD
Arianespace will have only a brief respite before their next scheduled mission – two communications satellites – which will launch on the Ariane 5. The launch is scheduled for February 14, 2017, during a launch window which extends from 4:39 p.m. to 6:05 p.m. EST (21:39–23:05 GMT).

Soyuz enters the final countdown for Arianespace's year-opening flight

Arianespace has commenced the final countdown for tonight's medium-lift Soyuz mission from the Spaceport in French Guiana, which is to place the Hispasat 36W-1 telecommunications relay platform into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).
Fueling of Soyuz is now underway on the launch pad, with the vehicle protected by a 53-meter-tall mobile gantry. This gantry will be rolled back to its parked position one hour before liftoff, revealing the completed launcher for the first time.
Tonight's Arianespace mission – designated VS16 in the company's launcher family numbering system – is set for liftoff at 10:03 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with Hispasat 36W-1 to be deployed during a flight sequence lasting 32 minutes and 10 seconds.

Soyuz Flight VS16: A milestone mission
After reaching the 36 deg. West orbital position, Hispasat 36W-1 is to be operated by Hispasat – a world leader in Spanish and Portuguese broadcasting, providing relay coverage and multimedia services for continental Europe, the Canary Islands and South America.
Arianespace's Flight VS16 – which kicks off the company's 2017 launch activity – will be the 16th liftoff of a Soyuz since its 2011 introduction at the Spaceport, and marks this launcher's first mission to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) from French Guiana.

Soyuz delivers! Arianespace's first 2017 mission opens a fast-paced year of launch activity

Arianespace began its busy 2017 launch schedule with a Soyuz mission tonight that marked multiple "firsts" in orbiting the Hispasat 36W-1 telecommunications satellite on a flight from the Spaceport.

Departing at the exact planned liftoff moment of 10:03:34 p.m. (local time in French Guiana), Soyuz flew a 32-minute profile to release its satellite passenger into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) – the first mission that Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz has performed for a GTO deployment while operating from the Spaceport.

Today's success was Soyuz' 16th launch from French Guiana since it began service at the Spaceport in 2011, and was designated Flight VS16 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system. The workhorse Soyuz vehicle previously delivered payloads on Spaceport missions to circular Earth orbits, low-Earth orbits, Sun-Synchronous orbits, and an elliptical orbit for an Earth escape trajectory.

Europe's "SmallGEO" makes its debut
Another first on tonight's mission involved the Hispasat 36W-1 satellite itself, which is the initial spacecraft built using Europe's new "SmallGEO" platform.

Developed by Germany's OHB System AG under ESA's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program, the SmallGEO platform line offers an entirely European solution in the smaller telecommunications satellite market. It benefits from faster production and testing processes, reduced costs and a broader range of design options.

Once at its orbital position at 36 deg. West, Hispasat 36W-1 will enable Spanish satellite communications operator Hispasat – a leader in the distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese – to provide a wide range of telecommunications services in Europe, the Canary Islands and South America. Equipped with 20 Ku-band transponders and the additional capacity of three transponders in Ka band, Hispasat 36W-1 features the innovative RedSAT regenerative payload, along with an antenna equipped with a processor that allows onboard beam reconfiguration.

Hispasat 36W-1 had a liftoff mass of 3,210 kg., with Soyuz delivering an overall payload lift performance of 3,319 kg. on tonight's Flight VS16 mission.

A milestone mission for Hispasat and OHB System
With Flight VS16, Hispasat 36W-1 was the seventh satellite launched by Arianespace for Hispasat since 1992.

Hispasat 36W-1 was the 15th OHB System-built satellite lofted by Arianespace, with 11 more in Arianespace's order book for future launches.

Keeping up the launch pace in 2017
As the first Arianespace mission for 2017, Flight VS16 opens a busy launch manifest that targets up to 12 flights during the year, utilizing the medium-lift Soyuz, heavy-lift Ariane 5 and lightweight Vega. Of this total, six are planned between today and late April, underscoring Arianespace's reactivity in meeting its customers' launch requirements.

The next mission is scheduled for February 14, using an Ariane 5 to orbit two telecommunications satellite passengers. Designated Flight VA235 in Arianespace's numbering system, this launch will carry SKY-Brasil-1 for AT&T (DIRECTV) through its affiliate DIRECTV Latin America, along with Telkom 3S for Indonesia's Telkom.

 January 28, 2017

Hispasat's new communications satellite, successfully launched by a Soyuz rocket fr om French Guiana, is now orbiting in space.

The H36W-1 includes a pioneering RedSAT regenerative payload, enabling HISPASAT to use satellite power more smoothly and efficiently.

This is the first mission of the new SmallGEO platform, which was developed by OHB System AG (Germany) together with the European Space Agency and HISPASAT.

Madrid, 28 January 2017. At 2:03 AM Spanish time, Hispasat successfully launched its tenth satellite, the Hispasat 36W-1 (H36W-1), fr om the European Spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana, aboard Arianespace's Soyuz launch vehicle.
Approximately 32 minutes after the rocket took off, the H36W-1 satellite separated from the launch vehicle, at which point the solar panels were started up and deployed. From that moment on, manoeuvres began to position the new satellite at the geostationary orbit point wh ere the test phase will be carried out to make sure it is working properly, and which is scheduled to last several weeks.
Carlos Espinós, the satellite operator's CEO, stated that "this new satellite is an important step in Hispasat's innovation strategy. Hispasat 36W-1 is not only the first mission of the new SmallGEO platform, but also incorporates an advanced regenerative payload that will provide the satellite with greater flexibility and signal quality thanks to its reconfigurable antenna and on-board processor, thus improving the telecommunications services it will provide to its clients. We are very satisfied with our collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), which has allowed us to participate in a leading technological project to which they have added significant value with their knowledge and experience in the space sector."
The new satellite will provide coverage for South America and Europe, including the Canary Islands. It has a 15-year lifespan and will offer video contribution and cellular backhaul services, as well as company and broadband solutions. It is fitted with 20 transponders on the Ku band and additional capacity of up to 3 transponders on the Ka band, and has a launch mass of 3,200 kg.
Innovation

The H36W-1satellite was built by the German company OHB System AG and is the first mission of the SmallGEO platform, developed by the German manufacturer together with the European Space Agency and HISPASAT. This platform allows for a substantial reduction in satellite mass thanks to the use of electric propulsion throughout the lifespan of the satellite.
In addition, the H36W-1 incorporates RedSAT, an advanced regenerative payload consisting of a novel active antenna with reconfigurable beams that, together with the on-board processor, will improve the efficiency and services offered by the satellite. The antenna can be controlled electronically from the Earth and reoriented at any point during the lifespan of the satellite, granting it the flexibility to adapt its coverage to mission changes that may occur after launch, while still in orbit.
The on-board processor is a further step in the evolution of satellites, which can greatly simplify network architecture by performing in space a part of the processing usually carried out on Earth. It can simultaneously process up to four 36 MHz transponders, correcting possible signal degradations and transmitting them without errors, leading to a more robust and higher quality communications system that enables signal reception with small-diameter antennas.
Investment in the project has amounted to more than 240 million euros, and it has received funding from the CDTI as well as significant involvement from the Spanish industrial sector:
• Airbus Defense and Space Spain: Reconfigurable DRA-ELSA active receiving antenna (RedSAT payload), two reflective, deployable antennas on the Ku band and one fixed antenna on the Ka band. Two deployment systems for the two deployable DAPM (Deployable Antenna Positioning Mechanism) antennas on the Ku band.
• Arquimea: Analogue and digital ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) on the DRA-ELSA antenna.
• Celis: Development of the satellite IOT test bench.
• Crisa (subsidiary of Airbus): PCU (Power Control Unit) or satellite power regulator.
• Expace: NOC (Network Operation Centre) development of the RedSAT regenerative payload Earth system.
• GMV: Satellite control centre and flight dynamics systems.
• Iberespacio: Control units of the electric propulsion subsystem. LHP (Loop Heat Pipe) active cooling system for the DRA-ELSA antenna.
• Indra: Terrestrial segment of satellite control. Gateway of the RedSAT terrestrial segment.
• Tecnobit (Oesía Group): DRA-ELSA antenna control unit: ICU (Integrated Control Unit) and its PSU (Power Supply Unit).
• Thales Alenia Space Spain: Regenerative RedSAT on-board processor and associated terrestrial segment.
• Tryo Aerospace: LNA (Low-Noise Amplifier) and Down Converters (Frequency Converters) on the Ku and Ka frequency bands. Telemetry and telecommand (omni-directional and horn) antennas.

Hispasat 36W-1 with SmallGEO platform

 SmallGEO's first flight reaches orbit

 28 January 2017
ESA's new small telecom platform was launched on its first mission in the early hours of this morning.
The Hispasat 36W-1 satellite, based on the SmallGEO platform, lifted off on a Soyuz rocket at 01:03 GMT this morning fr om Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
SmallGEO is Europe's response to the market demand for more flexible, modular telecommunications platforms. It marks the first time the German satellite manufacturing company OHB System AG have been the prime contractor for a telecommunications satellite mission. Its Hispasat payload marks the first ESA partnership with a Spanish operator.

The three-tonne satellite was released by Soyuz into its transfer orbit 29 minutes after liftoff this morning. It will now use its own thrusters to make its way to its final destination over the course of the next few weeks.
It is heading towards 'geostationary' orbit at an altitude of 36 000 km over the equator, wh ere it will take a day to circle Earth and therefore appear to hang over the same point, in this case at 36°W over the Atlantic Ocean.
OHB will test the satellite's health and performance, making sure the sensitive technology made it unscathed through the violence of the launch.
After all is deemed well, they will hand the control over to Hispasat and the satellite will begin providing broadband services to Europe, South America and the Canary Islands.

"The launch of this first SmallGEO platform marks another major success for ESA's programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems, known as ARTES, which aims to boost the competitiveness of its Member State industry through innovation," noted Magali Vaissiere, ESA's Director of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications.
"SmallGEO is part of our continuous efforts to strengthen the position of European and Canadian industry in the commercial telecommunications market, expanding the current range of available products.
"The next satellite based on SmallGEO will be EDRS-C, as the second node to the European Data Relay System."
Carlos Espinós Gómez, CEO of Hispasat, said: "For Hispasat, this new satellite represents an important step forward in its innovation strategy.
"Hispasat 36W-1 is not only the first mission of the new SmallGEO platform, but also incorporates an advanced regenerative payload that will provide the satellite with greater flexibility and signal quality thanks to its reconfigurable antenna and onboard processor, thus improving the telecommunications services it will provide to our clients.
"We are very satisfied with our collaboration with ESA, which has allowed us to participate in a leading technological project to which they have added significant value with their knowledge and experience in the space sector."
Marco Fuchs, CEO of OHB System AG, commented: "The launch is a major milestone in the history of OHB. Hispasat 36W-1 proves that OHB's concept of a modular and flexible SmallGEO platform fits into the market.
"SmallGEO is destined to build a cornerstone for Europe's future activities in the segment of geostationary satellites in the three-tonne class.
"For OHB, Hispasat 36W-1 is the first project of a wide scope of future missions based on the SmallGEO platform, including a revolution in satellite technology: the full electric propulsion mission Electra."

Flight VS16 was performed from the Spaceport's ELS launch zone for Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz.

"This flight once again demonstrates the availability and flexibility of Arianespace's launch vehicle family at the service of our customers," said Stéphane Israël, the company's Chairman and CEO in comments from the Spaceport.

Europe's "SmallGEO" makes its debut
Another first on tonight's mission involved the Hispasat 36W-1 satellite itself, which is the initial spacecraft built using Europe's new "SmallGEO" platform.

With the ELS launch zone's mobile gantry visible in the foreground, Flight VS16's Soyuz begins its ascent from French Guiana with the Hispasat 36W-1 "SmallGEO" satellite.

Developed by Germany's OHB System AG under ESA's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program, the SmallGEO product line offers an entirely European solution in the smaller telecommunications satellite market.

"In doing so, more than 60 percent of Hispasat satellites currently in operation have been orbited by Arianespace," said Stéphane Israël. "I am sure that we will have future opportunities to deliver for Hispasat!"

Carlos Espinós, Hispasat's Chief Executive Officer, described the Flight VS16 launch as a "wonderful and exciting moment," adding: "I want to thank Arianespace's work, which – as always – has been done with excellence.''

Hispasat 36W-1 was the 15th OHB System-built satellite lofted by Arianespace, with 11 more in Arianespace's order book for future launches.

Soyuz confirmed its accuracy on Flight VS16, with the following estimated orbital parameters for Hispasat 36W-1's deployment:
 – Apogee altitude: 35,886.5 km. for a target of 35,862.6 km.
 – Perigee altitude: 249.4 km. for a target of 250.1 km..
 – Inclination: 5.44 deg. for a target of 5.44 deg.

Keeping up the launch cadence in 2017
As the first Arianespace mission for 2017, Flight VS16 opens a busy launch manifest that targets up to 12 flights during the year, utilizing the medium-lift Soyuz, heavy-lift Ariane 5 and lightweight Vega.

The H36W-1 satellite reaches its orbital position and becomes operational
May 26, 2017

The satellite is now located in its final orbital position at 36° West and will begin to offer its first services after testing in space.

The Hispasat 36W-1 satellite was launched in January fr om the European Space Port of Kourou in French Guiana aboard a Soyuz vehicle from Arianespace.

MADRID, 26 May 2017. The Hispasat 36W-1 satellite (H36W-1) is now located at its final orbital position at 36° West and over the next few days it will begin to offer the telecommunications services it was designed for, after having successfully passed extensive testing in space. This new satellite offers coverage over South America and Europe, including the Canary Islands, and has 20 transponders on the Ku-band as well as additional capacity on the Ka-band.

It has a 15-year lifespan and will offer video contribution and cellular backhaul services, as well as business and broadband solutions, among others. The satellite was built by the German company OHB System AG and is the first mission of the new SmallGEO platform, developed by the German manufacturer together with the European Space Agency and HISPASAT. This platform allows a substantial reduction in satellite mass thanks to the use of electric propulsion throughout the lifespan of the satellite.

Hispasat 36W-1 lifted off from the European Space Port of Kourou in French Guiana on 27 January aboard a Soyuz rocket from Arianespace. Since then, the subsystems, transponders and antennas have been rigorously tested to ensure they operate correctly in orbit.

RedSAT Advanced Payload

The H36W-1 satellite incorporates RedSAT, an advanced regenerative payload consisting of a novel active antenna with reconfigurable beams that, together with the on-board processor, improves the efficiency and performance offered by the satellite. The antenna can be electronically controlled from the Earth and reoriented at any point during the lifespan of the satellite, granting it the flexibility to adapt its coverage to orbit changes that may occur in the mission after launch.

The on-board processor is a further step in the evolution of satellites, which can greatly simplify network architecture by performing in space a part of the processing usually carried out on Earth. It will be able to simultaneously process up to four 36 MHz transponders, correcting any degradations of the signal and transmitting it without errors, leading to a more robust and higher quality communications system that enables signal reception with small-diameter antennas.

6 June 2017
After four months of exhaustive testing in space, the flagship SmallGEO mission Hispasat 36W-1 has passed all trials with flying colours, which means control has been handed to the operator.

H36W-1 lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou on 27 January on a Soyuz rocket. The launch marked a number of impressive firsts for both ESA and industry, as not only the first ESA partnership with a Spanish operator and the first telecom satellite to be built in Germany for over 20 years, but also the first time a Soyuz carried a telecom satellite to geostationary transfer orbit from French Guiana.

Once the rocket's upper stage released the satellite into this orbit, the team back on Earth set to work, measuring its health and performance after launch to ensure everything was working as it should.

Based at the German Space Operations Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen, the team of ESA, Hispasat, OHB System AG and DLR German Aerospace Center engineers meticulously took H36W-1 through a sequence of manoeuvres to move it to the optimum position for testing.

From that point on, every subsystem, transponder and antenna was put through its paces over the course of several months. Particular attention was paid to another first: the Redsat (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Telecommunications_Integrated_Applications/SmallGEO/Redsat) payload. This was the Spanish processor's first flight, and its flexible four-beam Ku-band Direct Radiating Antenna was thoroughly verified to make sure the delicate equipment was unscathed.

All partners joined forces to bring the satellite to the point of service readiness under two overlapping public–private partnerships. The SmallGEO platform on which the ESA–Hispasat satellite is based is the result of a partnership between ESA and OHB System AG. This programme was ESA's response to the demands of the fast-paced telecom market, as a way of helping industry to develop the cutting-edge technology and advanced manufacturing techniques needed to produce more efficient, modular satellite platforms at a much faster rate.

The culmination of this H36W-1 partnership is the satellite arriving at its operational position on the geostationary arc at 36ºW, and the final handover to its owner Hispasat.

Andrea Cotellessa, ESA's SmallGEO project manager, noted: "Now that it is at 36ºW, the satellite will start its 15 year operational life. We, at ESA, are very proud to have made possible the delivery to Hispasat of this new satellite. This is the result of several years of tremendous works carried out with OHB Group and their suppliers' base, and with our partner Hispasat.

"Europe's competitive offer for three tonne-class geostationary satellites is now a reality and Hispasat 36W-1 is the first of a long series of satellites using the newly developed SmallGEO platform."

H36W-1 will complement Hispasat's existing fleet of telecommunications satellites, providing a commercial broadband service over Europe, the Canary Islands and the Americas.
