ЦитироватьA Message from Spaceflight President Curt Blake on the FormaSat-5/SHERPA launch
March 2, 2017 (http://www.spaceflight.com/message-spaceflight-president-curt-blake-formasat-5sherpa-launch/) Jodi Sorensen (http://www.spaceflight.com/author/jsorensen/)

One of our biggest, and most valued, differentiators in the market is that Spaceflight is dedicated to providing our customers an array of launch options to meet their deployment needs. Never has this come into play more than it did these last several weeks.
Here's the challenge: Getting to space is hard. All launch vehicles experience delays and failures – and this pain is felt by the entire launch industry – no one is spared. On the flipside, when launches happen (like many have recently), it's cause for all to celebrate. Revolutionizing commercial space is hard, but it's exactly what we all signed up to do.
We applaud the work that SpaceX has done, and is continuing to do on behalf of the industry. We couldn't be more thrilled to see them solve some of the toughest challenges of our time and always look forward to working with them. However, they recently communicated their 2017 manifest and the impact on the Formosat-5 mission is significant. We learned our launch would occur potentially much later than expected. (As a secondary rideshare on this mission, our control of the schedule is far less than when we're the primary like on our SSO-A dedicated mission later this year.)
Our response: Our job, first and foremost, is to satisfy our customers' needs to get into space as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. While delays are inevitable in the launch business, we made the decision to rebook all our customers slated to launch on the FormoSat-5 mission.
The result: We found each of our customers an alternative launch that was within the same time frame. It took a huge effort, but within two weeks, the team hustled to have all customers who wanted to be rebooked confirmed on other launches!
This flexibility and access to other LVs, the standardization of technology, and the expertise of our team is indeed the "secret sauce" of Spaceflight. Because we work with many launch providers around the world, we can give our customers the most options to meet their needs. I am incredibly proud of our team. They worked tirelessly with all our launch partners to rebook our customers so quickly. Our customers can be sure that we will always go above and beyond to fulfill our commitment to get them to space.

Onward and upward,
Curt Blake

First Taiwanese satellite to be launched Aug. 25 (http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2017/06/30/2003673593)

ЦитироватьThe nation's first domestically designed satellite, the Formosat-5, is to be launched on Aug. 25 in the US to resume the observation missions of the decommissioned Formosat-2, the Cabinet said yesterday.

Спойлер
The satellite is to collect data for natural disaster evaluation, national security, environmental monitoring, international rescue operations and scientific research, National Space Organization (NSPO) Director Chang Guey-shin (張桂祥) said.

The Formosat-5 is to replace the Formosat-2, which was decommissioned in August last year after being used in 343 disaster response missions such as providing authorities with immediate images of damaged areas during the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, Chang said.

The 450kg Formosat-5 is the first project in which the NSPO was fully responsible for all engineering, including payload, imaging sensors and ground control systems.

The Formosat-5 is to carry the first locally made optical remote sensing instrument equipped with the world's first space-grade metal oxide semiconductor image sensor, which the organization developed in cooperation with the nation's electronics and semiconductor industries.

The satellite cost about NT$5.65 billion (US$186 million) to make and is to embark on a five-year observation mission around the globe.
[свернуть]
The satellite's launch was initially scheduled for October last year. A failed rocket test in September last year at SpaceX, the US company commissioned to launch Formosat-5, delayed the launches for all its customers, among which was the NSPO.

SpaceX is contractually required to pay 1.25 percent of the contract amount — about NT$700 million — for every month's delay, Chang said, adding that the company is expected to pay 10 percent in compensation.

Спойлер
Meanwhile, the Formosat-7 program, a follow-up Earth observation mission, is to launch a constellation of 12 mission satellites and an autonomous satellite to perform occultation studies of the upper atmosphere, the NSPO said.

The first constellation of the Formosat-7 program, consisting of six satellites, is expected to be launched next year, the office said.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — FORMOSAT-5 (福爾摩沙衛星五號), the first entirely domestically developed satellite operated by Taiwan's National Space Organization (NSPO,國家太空中心) was packaged and shipped to the U.S. Saturday for the launch by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket August 25 (Taiwan Time) in California, reports said.
Спойлер
FORMOSAT-5 is the first remote sensing satellite designed, manufactured, and controlled by the NSPO and domestic teams. Succeeding FORMOSAT-2, which was decommissioned in 2016, FORMOSAT-5 will embark on a five-year mission, orbiting around the globe to conduct earth observation, according to the NSPO.

Premier Lin Chuan (林全) visited the NSPO in Hsinchu Saturday to oversee the final shipment preparation of the satellite.

"We hope to push for the cooperation or expansion of the satellite-related industries and create opportunities for collaborations between Taiwan and other countries on manufacturing satellites," said Lin.

The high-resolution images taken by FORMOSAT-5 can contribute to state governance, national security, technological diplomacy, academic research, environmental monitoring, disaster prevention and relief, and international humanitarian relief, said Chen Liang-gee (陳良基), head of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

"This [the satellite] is the nation's pride," said Chen.

In collaboration with more than 50 industries and research institutes, the NSPO has researched and developed the satellite since 2009 with a budget of over NT$5 billion dollars (US$180 million), said Chen.

Chang Guey-shin (張桂祥), director general of the NSPO, said that the satellite is due to arrive in the U.S. on July 20. It will undergo a final test before being integrated into Space X's Falcon 9 rocket on August 16 at Vandenberg Air Force Base (范登堡空軍基地) in California.

The launch of FORMOSAT-5 was originally scheduled for 2016 but was delayed due to an explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket in September which disrupted the following rocket launch schedules.

Falcon 9 is a two-stage launch vehicle that can transport satellites and spacecraft into earth orbit. Built by SpaceX, a private aerospace company set up by Tesla founder Elon Musk in 2012, Falcon 9 is the first rocket capable of re-flights.

ЦитироватьFalcon 9 rocket test-fired for California launch next week

A commercial Falcon 9 rocket in the final stages of launch preparations fired its nine Merlin main engines Saturday at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, verifying its readiness for liftoff with a Taiwanese Earth-imaging payload Thursday.

SpaceX engineers rolled out the two-stage rocket Friday to Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg, and the Falcon 9 launch team oversaw a computer-controlled countdown and fueling sequence ahead of Saturday's static fire test.

Restraints kept the rocket firmly grounded on its hillside launch pad overlooking the Pacific Ocean as the Merlin 1D engines throttled up to 1.7 million pounds of thrust for several seconds.

The hold-down firing is a customary part of all SpaceX launch campaigns, used by engineers to confirm the readiness of the launcher and ground systems, and as an exercise of the ground team.

The next step in SpaceX's launch campaign at Vandenberg will be the removal of the rocket from the pad for attachment of the Formosat 5 spacecraft, a Taiwanese satellite designed to test out the country's domestic aerospace manufacturing capability and collect a range of black-and-white and color imagery of Earth.

Developed and funded by Taiwan's National Space Organization, or NSPO, Formosat 5 weighs around 1,047 pounds (475 kilograms) with a full load of fuel, according to information posted on NSPO's website.

After flying south from Vandenberg, the Falcon 9 rocket will send the Formosat 5 satellite into a 447-mile-high (720-kilometer) sun-synchronous orbit that passes near Earth's poles.

Liftoff is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24, at 11:50 a.m. PDT (2:50 p.m. EDT; 1850 GMT) at the opening of a 44-minute launch window.

The launch will be the fifth time a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will blast off from Vandenberg, an Air Force-run base on California's Central Coast northwest of Los Angeles. It will be the 40th Falcon 9 launch overall, including flights departing from SpaceX launch pads in Florida.

"We are proud to provide a safe and secure launch location for our mission partners," said Col. Gregory E. Wood, vice commander of the Air Force's 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg. "This mission is the practical demonstration of the professional spirit and teamwork found in the everyday operations of Team Vandenberg and SpaceX."

SpaceX plans to return the Falcon 9's first stage to a drone ship positioned downrange in the Pacific Ocean for refurbishment and reuse. The booster launching Formosat 5 is fresh from the factory and making its first flight.

Formosat 5 will only take up a fraction of the Falcon 9's lift capability, and officials from NSPO and SpaceX originally planned to launch the satellite on a Falcon 1e rocket. But SpaceX discontinued the small launcher, which was powered by a single Merlin booster engine, in favor of developing the Falcon 9 and larger rockets.

The Taiwanese government, through the National Space Organization, originally paid SpaceX around $23 million in 2010 for the launch, less than half of the advertised price of a Falcon 9 launch today.

Formosat 5 carries two instruments.

One is an optical imaging payload capable of resolving features as small as 2 meters — about 6.6 feet — in black-and-white. The camera has half that resolution in color mode.

An advanced ionospheric probe from the National Central University in Taiwan is also aboard Formosat 5.

The ionospheric instrument is an "all-in-one plasma sensor to measure ionospheric plasma concentrations, velocities, and temperatures over a wide range of spatial scales," according to a fact sheet released by NSPO. "The transient and long-term variations of ionospheric plasma can be monitored as seismic precursors associated with earthquakes."

Formosat 5 was to be accompanied by a package of approximately 90 small satellites fastened to a multi-payload Sherpa adapter developed by Spaceflight, a Seattle-based company that builds lightweight spacecraft and brokers launch services for CubeSats on rideshare rocket flights.

But Spaceflight canceled that plan after the Formosat 5 launch faced years of delays in the aftermath of two Falcon 9 rocket failures that combined to ground SpaceX's fleet for nearly a year. Formosat 5's launch was shuffled later in SpaceX's manifest for unexplained reasons.

Spaceflight has reserved a dedicated Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg next year with a Sherpa space tug expected to loft around 90 small satellites on the same rocket.

Meanwhile, the Seattle launch broker arranged for most of the 90 satellites slated to launch with Formosat 5 to fly on other rockets, including an Indian PSLV mission and a Russian Soyuz flight earlier this year.

Several others were rebooked on the next Sherpa adapter flying on a Falcon 9 next year.

Next week's launch from California will mark the 12th Falcon 9 flight of the year, coming in the heels of an Aug. 14 mission from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida that deployed a space station-build supply ship in orbit.

ЦитироватьSpaceX Conducts Static Fire Test for Long-Delayed Falcon 9 Launch with Taiwan's FormoSat-5
 August 20, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-formosat-5/spacex-formosat-5-static-fire-test/)

SpaceX on Saturday successfully completed the Static Fire Test for the company's next mission out of Vandenberg Air Force Base which, by on several counts, will be an unusual flight of the Falcon 9 rocket. Targeting an August 24 launch date, Falcon 9 will be tasked with lifting the FormoSat-5 Earth Observation Satellite for Taiwan's National Space Organization.

The mission is unusual in that it carries a particularly light payload and comes at a net financial loss for SpaceX, representing a leftover contract from the abandoned Falcon 1e program. FormoSat-5, weighing in at 475 Kilograms, requires only one-twentieth of Falcon 9's performance to the target 720-Kilometer orbit and only fills out a small fraction of the standard Falcon 9 payload fairing, sized to fit the largest communications satellites.

FormoSat-5 had a rather interesting road to the launch pad, starting development in 2005 as Taiwan's first domestic-built satellite after earlier FormoSats were designed and built by outside contractors.

The project had the typical technical challenges faced when developing a space mission, causing its schedule to be revised several times. The National Space Organization (NSPO) signed with SpaceX in June 2010 for a launch on the company's Falcon 1e rocket – a proposed upgrade of the Falcon 1 rocket with a higher-thrust Merlin 1C engine on the first stage, lengthened tanks to hold more propellant and an upgraded second stage. The FormoSat-5 launch contract value was reported as $23 million at the time.

Falcon 1e, capable of lifting one metric ton into Low Earth Orbit, was expected to make its debut in 2011 and FormoSat was targeting liftoff in late 2013, but plans changed significantly when SpaceX withdrew Falcon 1e from the market and moved payloads to the much more powerful Falcon 9. This allowed a series of Orbcomm satellites that would have used individual rockets to be bundled for only a pair of Falcon 9 missions, but the stand-alone FormoSat project remained on its own for some time on SpaceX's launch manifest.

Spaceflight SHERPA – Image: Spaceflight Industries

Due to payload-related delays, FormoSat's launch date drifted from 2014 to 2015 and eventually 2016, giving SpaceX time to seek a co-passenger for the lightweight satellite. News emerged in the second half of 2015 that Seattle-based launch services broker & satellite builder Spaceflight Industries had signed up to ride with FormoSat, targeting this mission as the first launch of the company's SHERPA space tug delivering some 90 small satellites and aiming for a lower injection orbit than FormoSat. Even with SHERPA, the flight was still going to be light with an expected payload mass of 1,700 Kilograms.

FormoSat-5 concluded its pre-flight testing campaign in Taiwan in May 2016 and was ready to ship out for launch when reports surfaced that SpaceX had informed NSPO the mission would encounter a delay due to a range outage, taking a place in SpaceX's launch queue behind the inaugural Iridium-NEXT launch, then planned for September 2016. The September 1st explosion of a Falcon 9 on its SLC-40 launch pad in Florida further knocked back schedules due to an extended grounding of the Falcon 9 rocket.

San Francisco-based Planet that had 56 payloads on SHERPA pulled out in November in favor of India's PSLV that was able to provide a February 2017 launch opportunity.

FormoSat-5 ships out for launch – Photo: NSPO

At the time of Falcon's return to flight in January with the Iridium-1 mission, FormoSat had vanished from the near-term Vandenberg manifest due to launch vehicle availability. SpaceX's focus after recovering from mishaps in 2015 and '16 was to fly customers that were facing the most severe financial impacts or regulatory issues from staying on the ground, dealing with these critical missions – and the company's obligations to NASA – first.

SHERPA was de-manifested in February of this year and Spaceflight re-booked most of the flight's customers on other rockets with clearer schedules. According to a report by Taipei Times, SpaceX was facing a financial penalty of 1.25% of the total FormoSat-5 launch contract value for each month of delays on their part with a cap at 10%, leaving SpaceX with around $20.7 million for this mission when the typical asking price is $62M for a standard Falcon 9 launch.

Despite coming at a net loss for SpaceX, the contract signing at the time in 2010 represented important business that helped the company over initial struggles with Falcon 1 and on to bigger things.

Riding solo, FormoSat-5 will be the lightest payload launched by Falcon 9. The vehicle's potential performance numbers illustrate the colossal waste of rocket performance that will be transpiring on Thursday: according to NASA's Launch Services Program, Falcon 9 FT could deliver 7,900 Kilograms into the required orbit while keeping sufficient propellant for a Return-to-Launch-Site landing of the first stage, 10,955kg when using the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship deployed to the Pacific Ocean.

Thursday's planned launch will be 40th flight for the Falcon 9 rocket since its inauguration in 2010, the 12th of the year and the third Falcon 9 launch out of Vandenberg in 2017. It will be the fifth launch overall for Falcon 9 from its launch pad overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The FormoSat-5 mission will involve a Falcon 9 FT Block 3 first stage and Block 4 second stage – a combination that has been flying since May and will be replaced by all-Block 4 vehicles going forward (with the exception of Block 3 re-flights coming up later this year). Block 5, the final iteration of Falcon 9, is expected to roll out in the not too-distant future to complete at least seven flights with a frozen design needed for crew certification under NASA's requirements.

File Image of Falcon 9 atop its West Coast Pad – Photo: SpaceX

Pressing into the launch campaign for FormoSat, both stages of Falcon 9 traveled east from their manufacturing base in Hawthorne, California to undergo hot fire tests at SpaceX's Texas test facility. Then, the stages were shipped back west to Vandenberg in mid-July for final processing and integration. The vehicle was moved to the pad on Friday and went through a full propellant loading sequence on Saturday ahead of the brief ignition of the nine Merlin 1D engines on the first stage, typically aiming for a 3.5-second firing duration to allow all engines to come up to liftoff thrust.

Saturday's Static Fire Test occurred at 19 UTC, right at the opening of a multi-hour test window, indicating Falcon 9 enjoyed a smooth countdown with no hold-ups in its hour-long automated countdown and tanking sequence. After an initial quick review of data that confirmed all necessary performance parameters were captured, Falcon 9 went into de-tanking to return to the hangar next to the SLC-4E launch pad to meet its payload.

Thursday's launch window stretches from 18:50 to 19:34 UTC, though liftoff will target a near-instantaneous opportunity once committing to loading sub-cooled Liquid Oxygen and chilled Rocket Propellant 1 into the tanks.

Given its very light load, this mission would be a prime candidate for SpaceX's first Return-to-Launch-Site landing at the West Coast via a Falcon Landing Zone established at Space Launch Complex 4W just a few hundred meters from the SLC-4E launch pad. However, FCC documents filed in June show this mission will utilize the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship "Just Read The Instructions" for the powered landing of the first stage some 344 Kilometers south west of the launch pad. The exact reasons for opting for a more difficult ASDS landing are not clear – SpaceX appears to have finished construction of the landing pad and regulatory hurdles have been cleared via environmental impact assessments by the Federal Aviation Administration.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/152583.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-formosat-5/wp-content/uploads/sites/174/2017/08/geometry_06_poidx-060916-08_-_resize.jpg)
Falcon 9 Fairing Half – Photo: SpaceX

Even with the ASDS landing, Falcon 9 will have much excess performance on its second stage – likely leaving it with plenty of surplus propellants after dropping FormoSat-5 off in a planned 720-Kilometer Sun Synchronous Orbit inclined 98.3 degrees. What SpaceX intends to do with the leftover rocket capacity – if anything – remains to be seen. In a similar but not as drastic case of surplus performance on the NROL-76 mission (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-nrol-76/) earlier this year, SpaceX demonstrated a multi-orbit coast phase before deorbiting the second stage as the company works toward long-coast capability for its second stage to support complex mission profiles like direct Geostationary Injections.

It was strongly indicated that Thursday's mission will feature an attempt to recover the rocket's payload fairing halves as SpaceX pushes toward making more parts of Falcon 9 re-usable for further cost reduction. The fairing, 5.2 meters in diameter and 13.1 meters long, is a large composite structure that costs around $5 million and requires a lengthy manufacturing process that could become a bottle neck in the future as SpaceX continues to step up its launch pace from multiple launch sites.

Thursday's mission will likely feature a lofted trajectory, allowing the fairing to be separated relatively early in flight when the rocket's velocity will not be as high as for a Geotransfer mission featuring a less-lofted design. This should create a more favorable entry environment to increase the odds of the fairing making an intact return.

FormoSat-5 Satellite
FormoSat-5 is a Taiwanese Remote Sensing Satellite representing the first fully indigenous development of a remote sensing instrument at the National Space Organization (NSPO) of Taiwan under its Second Phase Space Program initiated in 2004 to establish new capabilities and independent developments for the exploitation of space. The satellite is a follow-on to FormoSat-2 launched back in 2004 and decommissioned in August 2016, closing a critical gap in Earth-imaging capabilities for Taiwan.

Under the FormoSat-5 project, NSPO aimed to acquire new technologies in the area of spacecraft platforms, instruments, ground support equipment and flight software. To further domestic space capabilities, NSPO worked with the Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) under supervision by Taiwan's National Science Council to develop a fully domestic space mission without relying on prime contractors fr om the U.S. and Europe which had been the case for the first FormoSat missions.

NSPO is responsible for the FormoSat-5 platform, the ground segment, systems engineering, and program management while the craft's primary instrument was developed jointly by NSPO and ITRC. Most satellite components were sourced fr om Taiwanese Industry with only few exceptions; launch services were outsourced to SpaceX as an outside contractor.

FormoSat-5 had a long road to the launch pad, starting development in 2005 which ended up being a lengthy process with several delays and challenges that had to be overcome. The mission's launch contract was awarded to SpaceX in 2010 with the initial expectation of launching in 2013 on a Falcon 1e rocket. With Falcon 1 being abandoned, the project moved on to the much more powerful Falcon 9 rocket and continued drifting, initially to 2015 and then to 2016 due to payload related issues and eventually into 2017 for a combination of payload readiness and delays on the SpaceX side.

FormoSat-5 Mission Architecture – Image: NSPO

High-resolution panchromatic and multi-band color imagery collected by FormoSat-5 will be used for a variety of applications including state governance, national security, technological diplomacy, academic research, environmental monitoring, disaster prevention and relief, and international humanitarian relief. In addition to its high-resolution imaging instrument, FormoSat-5 hosts an Advanced Ionospheric Probe to deliver scientific measurements from the ionosphere for space weather and geophysical research.

Design work on the FormoSat-5 mission had the broader scope of developing an NSPO heritage spacecraft platform capable of extending into the future and facilitating more powerful remote sensing payloads with greater needs in the areas of electrical power, thermal control, pointing accuracy and data volume. To that end, NSPO developed the structure, avionics subsystems and flight software from a clean sheet. Additionally, to remain cost effective, the platform was designed using Commercial Off The Shelf components that were put through customized space qualification processes to find a suitable compromise between low-cost components and in-space reliability.

RSI Installation on Satellite Platform – Photos: NSPO

The FormoSat-5 spacecraft consists of two principal modules – the octagonal spacecraft platform and the payload module comprising the RSI imaging instrument and Star Tracker for precise attitude determination. The platform consists of an aluminum skeleton as the load-carrying structure with a base plate facilitating the launch vehicle adapter and propulsion system and a forward panel providing structural support to the payload. The platform itself is an irregular convex octagon which means there are four larger and four smaller side panels which act as the mounting surfaces for the majority of internal subsystem components and various electronics boxes.

The Electric Power System of the FormoSat-5 satellite consists of two deployable solar panels, a battery unit and a central Power Control and Distribution Unit (PCDU). Each solar panel contains 19 strings of 20 triple-junction Gallium-Arsenide solar cells in series delivering an orbit-average power of 280 Watts that is passed to the PCDU from wh ere various redundant DC supplies are distributed across the satellite and to the battery.

FormoSat-5 Functional Block Diagram – Image: NSPO

The PCDU is designed to handle over 150 FET switch outlet channels, converting the 28-Volt primary power supply to users as demanded via secondary power buses. It also controls the state of charge of the 24 Amp-hour battery that is based on small cell technology with eight in series and 16 in parallel, outputting a voltage between 21 and 35V.

Housed within the PCDU are 17 circuitry modules; a Charge Regulator conditions the raw main bus of the satellite that hosts a pair of redundant Power Modules delivering a redundant primary power bus to the satellite loads, a pair of redundant DC/DC converters conditions secondary power to the satellite loads (5.2 and 15 Volts), a dedicated Ordnance Electronics unit switches power to deployment devices and a Propulsion Electronics Unit delivers voltages for thruster actuation.

Raw power is collected from 38 solar electricity control panels and processed by the Power Relay module tasked with managing the switchover of redundant DC/DC converters, distributing secondary power and providing bus protection. Internal/External DC/DC converter pairs have their own overcurrent protection realized via latch-up current limiters controlled by the PR module's Field Programmable Gate Array.

To avoid short circuits in the DC/DC converter sections, the module provides an under-voltage protection by switching the nominal converter to the redundant unit. The PCDU has a pair of interface units that collect housekeeping measurements from the various power components and actuate the power system based on inputs from the main flight computer.

Cold Gas Thruster – Image: AST Advanced Space Technologies GmbH

FormoSat-5 hosts a Cold Gas Propulsion System with four thrusters fed from a central Nitrogen tank installed on the bottom panel of the spacecraft structure. The Cold Gas Thruster (CGT) consists of a solenoid valve with very little leakage and broad voltage range, an 0.6mm throat diameter, 15° cone nozzle, a mechanical interface plate and the fluid interface supplying the Nitrogen gas. Each thruster assembly weighs only 43 grams and operates at a nominal thrust of 46 millinewtons at an inlet pressure of 1.5 bar, creating a specific impulse of 70.4 seconds. The thruster is designed for 1.5 million actuations and can be operated in pulses as short as 1 millisecond up to long steady state operation with a mass flow of 62mg/s.

The Cold Gas Propulsion System has a central Nitrogen tank, feeding two pairs of thrusters via a pressure regulator and isolation valves to provide redundancy in the event of a leak or valve failure on one thruster. The system will be primarily used for orbit maintenance and debris avoidance but could also be used to assist in attitude control.

µASC – Photo: DTU

The Attitude Determination and Control System for the FormoSat-5 mission was built with the stringent requirements of a precise Remote Sensing Mission, calling for a 3σ geo-location accuracy of 390 meters that takes into account orientation errors due to misalignment between the optical bench and the star tracker, and between the star tracker and the inertial reference frame used by the satellite. The geolocation requirement translates to an absolute pointing knowledge requirement of 0.012 degrees.

To comply with the tight pointing requirements of the mission, the mission uses a Micro-Advanced Stellar Compass (µASC) comprising three star tracker heads and four single-axis fiber optic gyros installed on the optical bench to avoid mis-alignment between bus and payload module and to lim it thermal fluctuations. µASC was provided by the University of Denmark and is a fully autonomous device comprising the DTU-built star trackers and μ-FORS6U fiber optic gyros produced by Litef, a Northrop Grumman branch in Germany.

µASC Functional Block Diagram (only three heads on FormoSat) – Image: DTU

The µASC Star Tracker Unit comprises three Optical heads and a single Data Processing Unit, capturing imagery of the star-filled sky that is analyzed by an onboard algorithm to identify known stars from a large catalog and calculate the craft's precise three-axis orientation in space. According to DTU, µASC typically operates in a dual-redundant configuration and delivers attitude solutions accurate to 2 arcseconds and supports attitude rates up to 20 degrees per second, generating 8 (nominal) to 22 measurements per second and requiring only 30 milliseconds for initial acquisition from a lost in space scenario.

The µFORS6U gyroscopes were originally envisioned for air, land and sea applications, but NSPO's environmental tests showed they would also be suitable for application in space. µFORS6U can measure body rates up to 327.7°/s with a noise of +/-0.15° and a bias of +/-3°/hour. Because the µFORS6U product has not flown on an operational mission, the risk of two or more failures was considered and FormoSat's flight software includes provisions for gyro-less attitude determination in which gyro data is computed numerically and fed into the typical gyro-stellar algorithm.

Image: NSPO

In addition to the µASC sensors that provide fine control in science operations, FormoSat-5 also hosts six Optical Sun Sensors and a pair of magnetometers to provide attitude determination in safe mode and data for actuation of the magnetic torque rods. Four reaction wheels represent the primary attitude actuators with three torque rods in use during safe mode control, initial de-tumble and for momentum dumps from the wheels.

The attitude actuation system achieves a pointing accuracy of 0.1 degrees and enables the spacecraft to slew up to 45 degrees in any direction (along track or cross track) for image targeting, though FormoSat-5 is not as agile as its predecessor, requiring 113 seconds to slew 45 degrees on the roll or pitch axes while yaw rates are even more sluggish at 0.12°/sec.

A pair of spaceborne GPS receivers are used to receive position information for orbit determination, geotagging of imagery and time synchronization via a Pulse Per Second Signal used to set the flight computer clock.

All attitude sensors and actuators interface directly with the Command and Data Management Unit (CDMU) that builds the central component of the spacecraft and is in charge of all satellite functions – executing ground commands, conditioning housekeeping telemetry and actuating all platform and payload systems.

The primary spacecraft computer is a 20 MIPS Leon-3 Fault-Tolerant processor implemented on an Actel AX-2000 Field Programmable Gate Array, building a highly configurable system that includes a variety of functions including Floating Point Unit, Spacewire link, ports for CAN & UART, a clock system and a memory controller. Leon-3 operates as a 32 bit synthesisable processor and has board-level redundancy control of the other unit.

The three Spacewire interfaces from the flight computer connect with the payload, the ground support equipment (only during testing) and the Spacewire Multiplexer/Demultiplexer that acts as the spacecraft's central data hub with ten Spacewire input/output interfaces to interconnect all satellite systems with a data rate of up to 50Mbit/s.

Data System Architecture – Image: NSPO

The MUX-DEMUX unit also builds the primary bridge between the functionally identical CDMUs that operate in a hot-redundancy scheme. A Reconfiguration Electronics module manages the redundancy between the two CDMUs, monitoring alarms from the prime CDMU and any irregularities to either command the prime CDMU to re-set, switch to the redundant unit or place the two CDMUs into a cross-strapped configuration until ground intervention is possible.

The Data Storage Module is used to store satellite health telemetry and science data, offering a 256 MB SDRAM memory with EDAC protection plus 3 Gbits mass storage; the science data storage capacity is 80 Gbit. The Housekeeping Modules of which there are two complete the collection of housekeeping data from all satellite subsystems and carry commands from the CDMU using analog inputs and outputs, digital inputs and outputs, and serial modules; they also communicate with the satellite's redundant GPS modules and carry position/timing data to the onboard computer and the payload data processing system.

A dedicated Telemetry and Telecommand Module is in charge of encoding/decoding the telemetry/command data according to the ESA packet telemetry standard, interfacing with the satellite's S-Band transceiver via a serial RS-432 bus to receive the commands sent from the ground and deliver housekeeping data for downlink with data rates of 128 kbit/s and 8 Mbit/s, respectively. It has Spacewire interfaces with the central MUX/DEMUX and the Mass Memory Unit, a backup connection to the payload that would come into play if the high-speed X-band transmitter fails, and several direct command paths to the satellite subsystems as part of a redundant data system.

The ADCS module exchanges attitude information and actuation commands with the satellite computer via the MUX/DEMUX and has digital and analog interfaces with the various sensors and actuators to manage the attitude control system.

FormoSat-5 uses S-Band for command uplink and telemetry downlink using a redundant transceiver unit while a high-speed X-Band transmitter is employed for the downlink of image data with a data rate of up to 150Mbit/s.

RSI Mirrors – Photo: NSPO

RSI is a pushbroom imager comprising a Cassegrain Telescope and a multi-band line detector array operated in a Time Delay Integration scheme; per the pushbroom concept, RSI sweeps out image swaths on the ground utilizing the satellite's orbital motion. Generalized Cassegrain-type telescopes make use of two mirrors placed on the optical axis of the telescope – a concave M1 primary mirror and an on-axis convex M2 mirror that focuses the light onto the Focal Plane Assembly.

The instrument employs a structure made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer chosen for its load-carrying capabilities and favorable thermal properties to keep the optical components aligned. RSI has an aperture diameter of 45 centimeters and has optical baffles for both of its mirrors to reject stray light, a correct lens is used to remove optical disturbances and focus the image onto the focal plane assembly.

Focal Plane Assembly – Image: NSPO

The RSI Focal Plane Assembly comprises the CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) line detectors, bandpass filters, control & read-out electronics, and the housing structure.

The detector features five lines (corresponding to five imaging bands) with 12,000 pixels (10µm pixel pitch) for the panchromatic imager and 6,000 pixels in each of the four multi-spectral lines (20µm pixel pitch), allowing the panchromatic channel to operate at 2x resolution.

All channels cover an identical swath of 24 Kilometers and are read-out according to a time delay integration scheme to compensate for satellite motion and allow overlaying imagery to be created. The detector, stitching four system-on-chip devices, is 12 by 2.3 centimeters in size.

The five-band filter was designed in-house at UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation) and exceeds required expectations.

RSI Electronics Unit – Image: NSPO

The instrument's panchromatic coverage stretches fr om 450 to 700 nanometers and the multi-band channels are as follows: B1 Blue (445-515nm), B2 Green (525-595nm), B3 Red (630-690nm) and B4 Near-Infrared (695-965nm). RSI delivers 12-bit image depth and employs a real-time processing technique with Discrete Wavelet Transfer and Bit Plane Encoder to compress the high-volume raw data onboard the spacecraft before downlink.

RSI is supported by a purpose-built Electronics Unit that handles instrument control and data processing, accepting a raw data rate of 480 Mbps from the detector read-out electronics and processing for storage on a 128 Gbit solid-state device. The EU also conditions the payload data downlink, outputting a data rate of 150 Mbps. It is capable of autonomous file management and isolation of bad memory.

The Advanced Ionospheric Probe (AIP) was developed at National Central University, Jhongli City as an all-in one plasma sensor with high sampling rate to deliver measurements of ionospheric plasma density, particle energy & speed and ambient magnetic field at exceptionally high spatial resolution.

AIP's primary objective is taking a detailed census of the particle environment and creating global ionospheric maps in the upper F-region over an extended period of time to bring out seasonal variations and study space weather phenomena. One specialized area of research pursued by the instrument is the influence of plate tectonics on the ionosphere which may provide a way of predicting imminent earthquakes.

AIP incorporates several in-situ ion and plasma sensors: PLP (Planar Langmuir Probe), RPA (Retarding Potential Analyzer), an IT (Ion Trap), and IDM (Ion Drift Meter). All AIP sensors are housed within a sensor head installed on a 35-centimeter stand that places the sensors into the incoming particle flow from the spacecraft ram direction with a Payload Electronics Unit facilitated on the main satellite body.

Langmuir probes can determine electron temperature, electron densities and the electric potential of a plasma through a simple measurement method involving one or more electrodes ins erted in to the plasma surrounding the spacecraft. The electrodes are either operated at a fixed bias or sweep through a range of voltages to measure the current in the electrode system to determine the plasma charge density that is proportional to the electron currents. AIP uses a single Langmuir Probe that sweeps through -10 to +10 Volts and records the associated current-voltage curves whose slope will yield the desired electron temperature measurement.

The Retarding Potential Analyzer (RPA) is a multi-grid analyzer designed to provide in-situ ion density and energy measurements using electrically biased grids placed between a 5-centimeter aperture and a quadrant collector wh ere the absorbed ion current is measured. The first grid placed in the RPA aperture is a retarding grid connected to a floating potential device that holds the grid at ground to avoid the interior electric field from affecting the incoming stream of ions.

The second grid is the primary retarding grid which stets an energy barrier for incoming ions by sweeping through -10 to +10 Volts, selecting the incoming ion energy band (rejecting ions below the sel ected energy band). When operating in the Ion Trap Mode, AIP will hold this grid at the floating potential in order to not repel any incoming ions to allow the entire ion flux to be directed to the collector for measurement.

G3, the third grid, acts as a suppressor grid biased at -15 Volts to prevent secondary and photo electrons created within the collector from leaving the instrument which could bias the current measurement and cause a positive distortion to the collector current. All three RPA grids consist of gold-coated stainless steel coated with a 0.11 mm wire diameter.

All four metal plates of the quadrant collector are maintained at the floating potential and interconnected to an ammeter for current measurements to create I-V curves fr om the collector measurement and retarding grid voltage which can yield ion temperature, composition and velocity.

In the IDM (Ion Drift Meter) mode, the G1 and G2 grids are both maintained at floating potential, but each of the detector plates is connected to an individual current meter so that the arrival angle of incoming ions can be measured through the current difference of the adjacent detector plates. Typically, AIP will operate in each of its four modes for one second (PLP, RPA, IT & IDM), creating a four-second measurement cycle for the desired ionospheric parameters. Sampling rates can be adjusted as needed between the nominal sampling rate of 128 samples per second up to a burst mode taking 8,192 samples per second.

 August 24, 2017 (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-formosat-5/spacex-falcon-9-lifts-taiwanese-formosat-5/)

A very lightly-loaded Falcon 9 departed its Pacific Coast launch pad on Thursday, carrying into orbit the FormoSat-5 Earth Observation Satellite for Taiwan's National Space Organization – a contract left over from SpaceX's Falcon 1 days that ended up creating the most colossal waste of rocket performance in recent history.

Making its 40th orbital delivery, Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 4E at 18:51 UTC, thundering off on an unusual mission that only required one twentieth of the vehicle's potential performance to the target orbit of 720 Kilometers. The rocket fired its first stage for two minutes and 28 seconds before the second stage took over for a six-and-a-half-minute burn to directly inject the 475-Kilogram satellite into its target orbit – foregoing the more efficient way of a two-burn flight profile that would be in play for a heavier delivery due to fuel requirements. FormoSat-5 sailed off eleven minutes after launch, beginning a mission of at least five years collecting Earth imagery for use by the Taiwanese government.

First Stage Landing – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

With plenty of surplus performance on this flight, SpaceX had the opportunity of bringing the first stage back to an on-shore landing, but for reasons that have not been communicated to the public, opted for a powered landing on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship 'Just Read The Instructions'. Arising from the mission's lofted trajectory, the first stage had the longest 'hang time' to date, climbing to over 250 Kilometers before falling back toward Earth, successfully touching down on its four fold-out landing legs just shy of eleven minutes after liftoff.

The lofted trajectory of Thursday's mission also afforded a favorable opportunity for returning the rocket's payload fairing halves – a feat SpaceX aims to master by the end of this year to further reduce the cost of its launch vehicles.

Thursday's launch was the fortieth flight of the Falcon 9 rocket since its inauguration in 2010, the fifth from its West Coast launch site, the 20th in the Full Thrust Configuration and the 12th in 2017 that is already the busiest year on record for the California-based company. The landing of Booster #1038 brought SpaceX's record to 15 successful first stage landings out of 20 attempts; it was the ninth successful drone ship landing and brings SpaceX's streak of consecutive landing successes to eleven.

FormoSat-5 has been on SpaceX's launch manifest since 2010 when the National Space Organization of Taiwan signed with the company for $23 million, booking the satellite on a Falcon 1e launch vehicle SpaceX expected to put on the market in 2011. However, the company withdrew the Falcon 1 altogether after five launches in order to focus on the larger Falcon 9 vehicle, also skipping the earlier proposed Falcon 5.

This meant that satellites originally assigned to Falcon 1s would move to Falcon 9 which, in some cases like Orbcomm, allowed satellites that were to launch one at a time to be grouped together to take advantage of the higher performance of the Falcon 9.

However, FormoSat-5 as a stand-alone project, remained as a solo passenger – initially aiming for a late 2013 liftoff but ending up with significant delays due to technical challenges encountered in satellite development. FormoSat-5 was reported in launch readiness in May 2016, but remained grounded as SpaceX placed priority on other commercial missions that were facing more severe consequences from further delays. This additional delay came with a 10% penalty for SpaceX and the company also lost Spaceflight Industries' SHERPA space tug that had been placed on the launch as a co-passenger until opting out in early 2017 due to the uncertainty associated with the mission's launch date.

Finally reaching the launch pad, FormoSat-5 is becoming Taiwan's first domestic-built satellite after NSPO relied on outside contractors for previous FormoSat missions. The project was initiated in 2005 as a follow-on to the FormoSat-2 spacecraft that launched as Taiwan's prime Earth Observer in 2004 and continued operating until being placed into retirement last year. FormoSat-5 is expected to close a year-long gap in remote sensing data availability and significantly expand on the previous mission's capabilities.

FormoSat-5 carries a pair of instruments, the Remote Sensing Imager is the mission's primary payload for the collection of remote sensing data and an Advanced Ionospheric Probe will measure Earth's plasma environment for ionospheric research, space weather studies and geophysical research looking into the prediction of earthquakes through an ionospheric response triggered by tectonic plate movement.

RSI Instrument Components – Image: NSPO

The Remote Sensing Imager hosts a 45-centimeter telescope feeding a multi-band line detector array, capable of capturing black-and-white imagery with a ground resolution of two meters and multi-spectral images in four bands with a resolution of four meters. Imagery captured by the instrument will be used in a number of areas including environmental monitoring, national security, disaster relief and a variety of scientific areas.

The Advanced Ionospheric Probe combines a series of sensors in a compact package installed to face the satellite's direction of travel to experience the inflow of charged particles that will be measured with high spatial resolution to deliver detailed maps of Earth's ionosphere to monitor seasonal, space-weather induced and geophysical effects on Earth's particle environment.

Weighing in at 475 Kilograms and standing 2.8 meters tall, FormoSat-5 filled only a small portion of Falcon 9's standard 13-meter tall, 5.2m diameter payload fairing. Performance-wise, Falcon 9 can be considered several sizes too large for a mission such as this and SpaceX is taking a financial hit considering the company currently offers Falcon 9 for $62 million and only raked in around $21 million for this mission. Nevertheless, at the time the FormoSat-5 contract was signed, it represented critical business for SpaceX and helped the company over initial struggles with Falcon 1 and on to the successful Falcon 9 project.

Continuing at a decent launch pace, Thursday's flight came only ten days after Falcon 9 last flew when lifting the Dragon SpX-12 (http://spaceflight101.com/dragon-spx12/) spacecraft into orbit for a cargo-delivery mission to the International Space Station. Falcon 9 #40 went through its static fire test on Saturday and returned to the hangar next to SLC-4E to meet its payload before returning to the sea-side launch pad in preparation for a lengthy countdown.

Falcon 9 went through a detailed checkout campaign while still enshrouded in the dark of night to receive a clean bill of health with all subsystems tested thoroughly before pressing into the tail end of the count, setting up for a 42-minute launch window. Engineers cleared the pad and Launch Controllers were polled at L-67 minutes, reporting a unanimous 'go' to proceed with the fully automated propellant loading sequence.

As clocks entered the final hour of the count, Falcon 9 started the highly choreographed tanking operation – starting with loading the two-stage vehicle with around 155 metric tons of Rocket Propellant 1, chilled to -7°C. RP-1 entered its pre-topping targets inside T-30 minutes with final top-up performed inside T-6 minutes to deal with thermal expansion of the densified propellant. Loading of 360 metric tons of sub-cooled Liquid Oxygen at -207°C started at T-35 minutes on the first stage and T-20 minutes on the second stage with topping level reached right at the T-2-minute mark to ensure flight mass is achieved as close to liftoff as possible to avoid LOX warming up inside the tanks.

The 70-meter tall rocket headed into final preparatory steps at T-7 minutes, starting to chill down its engines in preparation for ignition. Final tests were underway on the rocket's engine valves and actuators while the tanks were pressurized to allow the Strongback structure to move back to its launch position. Falcon 9 switched to internal power, armed its autonomous Flight Termination System and assumed control of the countdown at T-1 minute, overseeing the final pressurization of tanks to lead up to ignition at T-3 seconds.

The characteristic green flame of Falcon's igniter mixture erupted from the business end of the rocket as the nine Merlin 1D engines ramped up to a liftoff thrust of nearly 700 metric-ton-force, lifting Falcon 9 off the ground to embark on a long-delayed mission. Powering away from the Californian coast line, Falcon 9 turned to the south-west – aiming to deploy the satellite into a Sun Synchronous Orbit.

Given the abundance of performance on this mission, Falcon 9 was flying a direct injection profile, targeting to deploy the FormoSat-5 satellite into a 720-Kilometer orbit, inclined 98.28 degrees. Typically, missions into higher circular orbits would use two upper stage burns as seen on SpaceX's recent deliveries for Iridium that feature an initial boost phase into an elliptical orbit followed by circularization 625 Kilometers in altitude at the high point of the orbit.

A direct delivery eliminates the risk of the additional engine re-start and longer mission duration and is therefore chosen whenever possible. To facilitate FormoSat's delivery, Falcon 9 was programmed to fly an extremely lofted trajectory comprising a steep initial ascent to the target altitude and then accelerating to the desired circular orbit velocity.

Racing into clear skies after emerging from the typical Vandenberg fog, Falcon 9 passed Mach 1 barely over a minute into the flight and encountered Maximum Dynamic Pressure 69 seconds into the flight, throttling back for a brief moment to reduce stress on the ascending vehicle. Guzzling down 2,500 Kilograms of propellant per second, Falcon 9 passed 40 Kilometers in altitude two minutes into the mission, gearing up for the critical staging sequence.

MECO – Main Engine Cutoff – was marked at T+2 minutes and 28 seconds after the first stage accelerated the vehicle to a speed of 1.89 Kilometers per second. Illustrating the initial drive to increase altitude before focusing on building speed, the two stages parted ways four seconds after MECO at an altitude of 89 Kilometers with the second stage moving into start-up mode for ignition another seven seconds later and the first stage heading into post-separation maneuvers.

Stage 1 Entry Burn – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Due to this particular mission's profile, the first stage was in for a longer ride, coasting uphill for three minutes after separation before beginning to fall back toward Earth. While flying outside the atmosphere, the booster used its cold gas thrusters to maintain stable body rates and re-orient for entry.

With the drone ship parked 344 Kilometers from the launch site, no boostback was performed and the vehicle continued on a ballistic arc until firing up for the entry burn.

Given the lofted trajectory, the first stage was expected to have the longest flight time from liftoff to touchdown of any previous Falcon 9 launch. The booster fired up three engines at T+8 minutes and 47 seconds to slow down prior to encountering the dense layers of the atmosphere, also providing a trajectory correction to aim the booster toward the drone ship. The 38-second entry burn slowed the stage to under 870m/s and was followed by a 55-second long descent through the atmosphere with the booster's four grid fins providing three-axis control and modifying the booster's angle of attack to steer it to the drone ship.

Stage 1 went through the transsonic region and lit up its center engine half a minute before touchdown to arrest its vertical speed and come to a gentle landing on the drone ship's deck. The four landing legs deployed in the last seconds of the descent and the booster made a bulls-eye landing at T+10:48, reimbursing SpaceX for some of the money lost on this mission since Booster #1038 is a prime candidate for re-flight, having had a relatively gentle return from a LEO delivery.

Just before Fairing Separation – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Another re-use element in Thursday's mission was the payload fairing which SpaceX hopes to make re-usable sooner rather than later since it represents a considerable fraction of Falcon's launch price. The fairing comes at around $5 million apiece and is a composite structure that requires a fairly lengthy manufacturing process – creating a potential future bottle neck if SpaceX continues to step up its launch pace.

An initial attempt of returning the fairing halves intact came on the SES-10 mission and managed to return one fairing half mostly undamaged and the BulgariaSat-1 mission in June managed to return both halves practically intact. To make the fairings reusable, SpaceX adds a thruster system that stabilizes the clamshell-half in a favorable orientation for re-entry and steering chutes guide each fairing half to a pre-determined recovery location – either via splashdown in the ocean or aerial recovery.

(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/152578.jpg) (http://spaceflight101.com/falcon-9-formosat-5/wp-content/uploads/sites/174/2017/08/formosat5-launch7.jpg)
Photo: SpaceX Webcast

Thursday's flight provided an excellent opportunity for fairing recovery due to the lofted trajectory that allowed the fairing to separate while the rocket was not traveling as fast as it would for a GTO launch or typical LEO mission. Separation of the fairing was confirmed two minutes and 58 seconds into the launch when Falcon 9 was 132 Kilometers in altitude, traveling 1.81 Kilometers per second. The outcome of the recovery attempt was not shared in real time.

While the first stage enjoyed its record-setting sub-orbital arc, Stage 2 fired its 95,000-Kilogram force MVac engine for a planned burn of six minutes and 38 seconds, initially continuing a steep climb until pitching down to focus on building speed to reach the target orbit. Shutdown occurred nine minutes and 18 seconds into the flight and orbital parameters were reported as nominal by SpaceX launch controllers.

Spacecraft Separation – Photo: SpaceX Webcast

FormoSat-5 was pushed off by loaded springs eleven minutes after launch, sailing off on a mission of at least five years – earning SpaceX its 12th check mark of the year. For the second stage, the day was not done at spacecraft separation, set for over one orbit of coasting prior to a retrograde deorbit maneuver to set up for destructive re-entry over the South Pacific around two hours after launch, aiming for a zone west of New Zealand.

SpaceX will be in action again on September 7 with the launch of the fifth X-37B mission for the U.S. Air Force from the Kennedy Space Center. The company's next west coast launch is lined up for late September with the next batch of Iridium-NEXT communications satellites.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --
Team Vandenberg launched the FORMOSAT-5 satellite on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4 here Thursday, Aug. 24, at 11:51 a.m. PDT.
Спойлер
Col. Gregory E. Wood, 30th Space Wing vice commander, was the launch safety authority.

"The 30th Space Wing takes great pride in supporting another successful SpaceX launch," said Wood. "It is a sterling example of the wing's commitment to public safety and mission success on the Western Range."

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket delivers FORMOSAT-5, an Earth observation satellite for Taiwan's National Space Organization, to a low-Earth orbit.

"The Falcon 9 launch of Formosat-5 was an incredible mission to be a part of! This was the first satellite manufactured and integrated entirely by Taiwan and it was also the fastest turn-around time between Falcon launches here at Space Launch Complex-4," said Capt. Kylie Prachar, Air Force Launch Commander for F9-40 Formosat-5 mission, 1st Air and Space Test Squadron. "Our Air Force team put in a lot of work to support the mission and provide Fleet Surveillance on behalf of the Space and Missile Systems Center."

FORMOSAT-5 will operate in a sun synchronous orbit at an altitude of 720-km with a 98.28 degree inclination angle. As with the FORMOSAT-2 satellite, the primary payload on FORMOSAT-5 is an optical Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI), which provides 2-meter resolution panchromatic (black & white) and 4-meter resolution multi-spectral (color) images. FORMOSAT-5 also hosts a secondary scientific payload, an Advanced Ionospheric Probe, developed by Taiwan's National Central University.

Team Vandenberg launched the FORMOSAT-5 satellite on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. The SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket delivers FORMOSAT-5, an Earth observation satellite for Taiwan's National Space Organization, to a low-Earth orbit.

Flying with an exceptionally lightweight payload, a Falcon 9 rocket delivered a multipurpose research satellite into a nearly 450-mile-high orbit Thursday for Taiwan following a smooth countdown and liftoff from California's Central Coast.

Weighing in at about a half-ton, or 475 kilograms, the Formosat 5 satellite doubles as an orbiting observatory to look down on Earth and as a pathfinder for Taiwan's future space ambitions.

Formosat 5 climbed into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which lifted off at 11:51 a.m. PDT (2:51 p.m. EDT; 1851 GMT) from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.
Спойлер
Originally slated to fly on SpaceX's discontinued Falcon 1 rocket, Formosat 5 is the first major space mission fully designed, manufactured and tested in Taiwan. It follows Formosat 2, a European-built satellite owned by Taiwan's National Space Organization, or NSPO, launched in 2004 from Vandenberg on a Taurus rocket.

Formosat 2 was retired last year, well after Formosat 5 was originally scheduled for launch. But the project ran into delays in Taiwan, and Formosat 5's launch was switched to a larger Falcon 9 rocket once SpaceX ended its Falcon 1 rocket program.

Two SpaceX rocket mishaps over the last two years also contributed to the delays.

But the pre-launch worries faded Thursday with an on-target launch directly into Formosat 5's planned operating perch around 450 miles (720 kilometers) above Earth. Formosat 5 will fly in a sun-synchronous orbit, allowing its camera to regularly take photos of locations around the world, supporting scientific research and disaster monitoring functions.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket soared through low clouds a few seconds after liftoff, then turned south on course to place its payload into an orbit flying over Earth's poles.

The first stage of the Falcon 9 switched off its nine Merlin engines around two-and-a-half minutes into the mission, then detached 60 miles (100 kilometers) over the Pacific Ocean to begin a ballistic plummet toward a remotely-controlled floating barge.

Meanwhile, the upper stage's single Merlin engine fired six-and-a-half minutes to send Formosat 5 into orbit. About a minute after the Falcon 9 and Formosat 5 arrived in orbit, the first stage touched down on its landing target, making a propulsive vertical descent before settling on the platform with the aid of four deployable legs.

Moments later, Formosat 5 flew free from the Falcon 9's upper stage. Live video from a camera mounted on the rocket showed the Taiwanese satellite receding from view.

The NSPO said ground controllers received the first radio signals from Formosat 5 via a ground station in Svalbard, Norway, around 83 minutes after liftoff, confirming the craft's condition and health.

The Falcon 9's upper stage was programmed to reignite its engine later Thursday for a de-orbit maneuver to burn up in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

SpaceX and Formosat 5's owner declared success, making the Falcon 9 booster 12-for-12 this year after returning to service in the wake of an on-pad rocket explosion last year. Thursday's launch also marked the 40th Falcon 9 flight overall since SpaceX debuted the first version of the launcher in June 2010.

The first stage on Thursday's launch, a newly-manufactured booster, will return to port in Southern California in a few days for inspections, refurbishment and potential reuse on a future mission.

Thursday's flight was the fifth time a Falcon 9 rocket has launched from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 4-East, a hillside launch complex previously used by heavy-lift Titan 4 rockets.

The Air Force's Western Range manages tracking and support infrastructure at Vandenberg.

"The Falcon 9 launch of Formosat 5 was an incredible mission to be a part of," said Capt. Kylie Pracher, Air Force launch commander for the Formosat 5 mission from the 1st Air and Space Test Squadron. "This was the first satellite manufactured and integrated entirely by Taiwan and it was also the fastest turnaround time between Falcon launches here at Space Launch Complex 4. Our Air Force team put in a lot of work to support the mission and provide fleet surveillance on behalf of the Space and Missile Systems Center."

Taiwan's National Space Organization, the country's space agency, originally paid SpaceX around $23 million in 2010 for the launch, less than half of the advertised price of a Falcon 9 launch today.

Next up for SpaceX's bi-coastal launch team is another Falcon 9 flight scheduled to blast off Sept. 7 from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The commercial rocket will heave the Air Force's reusable X-37B space plane into orbit on a top secret mission, then its first stage will descend to a landing at Cape Canaveral a few minutes later.

The next Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base is scheduled for Sept. 30 with the third batch of 10 next-generation voice and data relay satellites for Iridium.

The launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket Aug. 24 from California delivered Taiwan's Formosat 5 Earth-imaging satellite to orbit, and the Falcon's first stage booster returned to landing on a drone ship downrange in the Pacific Ocean.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket lifted off at 11:51 a.m. PDT (2:51 p.m. EDT; 1851 GMT) from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

These photos released by SpaceX and the U.S. Air Force show the rocket's launch through a bank of late morning fog, and the gallery includes a shot of the first stage after landing on SpaceX's barge.

The first stage soared to a maximum altitude of 153 miles (247 kilometers), the highest apogee achieved by a Falcon 9 booster before returning to an intact landing. The first stage reached a peak velocity of Mach 6.9, a more important measure of the stress the vehicle encountered during re-entry, according to SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk.
