Targeting a resumption of Antares cargo launches to the International Space Station as soon as July, Orbital ATK plans to roll out an upgraded Antares rocket to a launch pad in Virginia this week for a 30-second firing of the booster's new engines.
Technicians working at the Antares launch site on Virginia's Eastern Shore are finishing up preparations for a series of tests and dress rehearsals for the rocket's return-to-flight.
The first Antares launch in nearly two years is set for early July, perhaps as soon as July 6, with a Cygnus supply ship carrying logistics, provisions and experiments to the space station and its six-person crew.
Before the cargo mission, dubbed OA-5 in Orbital ATK's flight sequence, is cleared for blastoff, engineers have several more major tests in store for the upgraded Antares rocket.
The next step is scheduled as soon as this week with the rollout of an Antares first stage booster to pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, according to Blake Larson, Orbital ATK's chief operating officer.
Fitted with two newly-built RD-181 engines fr om Russia, the Antares first stage will roll out of its Horizontal Integration Facility at Wallops for the one-mile trip south to the launch pad, wh ere it be hoisted vertical for several weeks of tests.
One of the first tests will be a wet dress rehearsal, in which the Antares launch team will load kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants into the booster.
"We'll basically run the pre-launch sequence and go right up to the point of firing the engines. We'll load all the commodities. We'll load all the pressurant gases. We'll apply all the purges. We'll get everything ready and see everything work properly between the vehicle and the pad systems, and then we'll stop the test right before engine ignition," said Kurt Eberly, Orbital ATK's Antares deputy program manager.
Spaceflight Now members can read a transcript of our full interview (http://spaceflightnow.com/2016/02/29/qa-with-kurt-eberly-orbital-atks-antares-deputy-program-manager/) with Kurt Eberly. Become a member today and support our coverage.
"We'll detank and look at all that data. If that all looks good, roughly a week or so later, we'll re-initialize the sequence, load the tanks, and go for the hotfire test.
The 30-second test firing of the twin-engine first stage is scheduled for late May.
The engines will be programmed to ramp up to full power — equivalent to more than 800,000 pounds of combined thrust — and go through a steering check as the control computers throttle the engines to different thrust levels they will see in flight.

"We want to see steady-state operation at each of the operating points in flight," Eberly said. "Once we hit those points, we have some mixture ratio excursions that we will command, and then we'll also be vectoring the nozzles during the test with varying frequency content looking to excite any adverse modes and interactions between the components."
Orbital ATK ordered RD-181 engines from Russia's NPO Energomash, the builder of the Atlas 5 rocket's RD-180 engine, in the wake of a catastrophic launch failure moments after a liftoff from Virginia in October 2014. The Antares rocket crashed near the Antares launch pad, toppling two of the facility's lightning protection towers and carving a huge crater just northeast of pad 0A's elevated launch mount.
A commercial Cygnus cargo freighter en route to the International Space Station with supplies was destroyed in the failure.
Investigators from Orbital ATK and NASA concluded the fiery mishap started about 15 seconds after liftoff inside a liquid oxygen turbopump on one of the rocket's first stage AJ26 engines.
The engines were built more than 40 years ago by the Soviet Union's Kuznetsov Design Bureau for the N1 moon rocket. When the Soviet moon program was canceled, officials put the engines — called NK-33s in Russia — in long-term storage before Aerojet Rocketdyne imported the powerplants to the United States in the 1990s.
Aerojet Rocketdyne modified the engines for use on U.S. launchers, qualifying the NK-33s for U.S. propellants and adding mechanisms for in-flight steering. The company renamed the upgraded engines as AJ26s.
Orbital ATK intended to move away from the AJ26 engine before the 2014 launch failure, but the accident accelerated the company's plans. Officials announced two months after the rocket crash that NPO Energomash would provide newly-built RD-181 engines for future Antares launches.
Since the first two RD-181 engines arrived from Russia last year, ground crews at Wallops have mated the powerplants to the Antares rocket's Ukrainian-made first stage structure. The booster and RD-181 engines set for the hotfire test later this month are assigned to fly on the OA-7 launch scheduled at the end of 2016.
The RD-181 engine generates 13 percent more thrust than the AJ26 and burns its mix of kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants more efficiently, Eberly said in an interview with Spaceflight Now.
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/154949.jpg) (https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/154949.jpg)
These two RD-181 engines delivered in December will power the next Antares rocket launch. Two engines delivered from Russia in August 2015 will be used for the upcoming hotfire test, then prepared for another Antares mission at the end of 2016. Credit: NASA
"The combination of those two (improvements) give us a good 20 to 25 percent performance improvement to the orbit that we're flying to in low Earth orbit to inject the Cygnus for these cargo runs," Eberly said.
The single-chamber RD-181 is similar to the dual-nozzle RD-180 engine flown on United Launch Alliance's Atlas 5, producing about the thrust of its larger cousin. NPO Energomash produces a nearly identical engine named the RD-191 for Russia's Angara rocket family.
The new version of the rocket is known as the Antares 230 configuration, according to Orbital ATK.
Eberly said the new engines required a new type of thrust adapter, a structural component that mechanically connects the RD-181s to the first stage. Orbital ATK also built avionics systems for the engines, developing the new controllers in-house to replace the AJ26 controller sourced from an external supplier, Eberly said.
"It's about the same physical size as the AJ26," Eberly said. "It uses the same propellants. The combustion cycle (is the same), which means that the mixture ratio between the two propellants — between the kerosene and the liquid oxygen — is very close."
Each engine is individually steered to guide the Antares rocket in flight, and designers positioned the RD-181 engine nozzles in the same place as the AJ26 engine cones, minimizing changes to the launch pad and ground support equipment.
"The new components were the engines, obviously, the new thrust adapter, and then feedlines, which are the pipes that connect the core tanks to the engines, and then some new avionics and software to control it all," Eberly said. "That was really what changed. Everything forward of the first stage is identical."
Orbital ATK builds the solid-fueled Castor 30XL second stage for the Antares rocket. It is unchanged from the upper stage on previous Antares models.
The higher-performing RD-181 engines will alter the Antares rocket's launch profile, Eberly said. Because the new engines will consume fuel from the same first stage tanks first designed for the AJ26, they will drain the propellant supply faster.
"Whereas with the AJ26, we were on the order of 235 seconds of first stage burn, we'll be down around 214 seconds for these RD-181s," Eberly said. "They will just consume the propellants that much faster."

Dulles, VA 31 May 2016 – Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA), a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, today announced it conducted a full-power "hot fire" test of the upgraded first stage propulsion system of its Antares medium-class rocket using new RD-181 main engines. The 30-second test took place at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) on May 31, 2016 at Virginia Space's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) Pad 0A. Initial indications are that the test was fully successful. The Antares engineering team will review test data over the next several days to confirm that all test parameters were met. Assuming the success of the test is confirmed, it will clear the way for the resumption of Orbital ATK's cargo logistics missions to the International Space Station (ISS) fr om Wallops Island, Virginia, currently scheduled for July.
"Early indications show the upgraded propulsion system, core stage and launch complex all worked together as planned," said Mike Pinkston, Orbital ATK General Manager and Vice President, Antares Program. "Congratulations to the combined NASA, Orbital ATK and Virginia Space team on what appears to be a successful test."
The primary goal of the test was to verify the functionality of the integrated first stage, including new engines, modified Stage 1 core, avionics, thrust vector control and pad fueling systems in an operational environment.
During the test, a number of operational milestones were met including full propellant loading sequence, launch countdown and engine ignition and shut down commands, as well as multiple throttle settings including full engine power. The test also validated the launch pad's operation, including propellant tanking and the use of the water deluge system to protect the pad from damage and for noise suppression.
Orbital ATK will now purge and clean the engines of residual propellants and return the first stage used in this test to the Horizontal Integration Facility for full reconditioning prior to its use on the OA-7 mission slated for later this year. The Orbital ATK team will continue to prepare the Antares rocket that will launch the OA-5 mission, which is in the final stages of integration, systems testing and check-out in preparation for launch this summer.
Each of the new flight RD-181 engines has undergone hot fire acceptance testing at the manufacturer's facility prior to being shipped to Orbital ATK. A certification test series was successfully completed in the spring of 2015 wh ere a single engine was test fired seven times, accumulating 1,650 seconds of test time and replicating the Antares flight profile, before being disassembled for inspection.
"The successful stage test, along with the extensive testing of each new RD-181, gives us further confidence in the first stage propulsion and in moving forward to launch," said Pinkston. "We are now focused on the OA-5 mission and launching the enhanced Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station on our upgraded, higher-performing Antares rocket."
The enhanced Cygnus recently flew on the successful OA-4 and OA-6 missions, launched in December and March, respectively. The spacecraft has several new features, including larger cargo capacity, the use of Orbital ATK's lightweight UltraFlexTM solar arrays, a mass optimized service module structure and a lighter weight propulsion system. Cygnus, like most Orbital ATK spacecraft, is compatible with multiple launch vehicles, enabling the recent use of United Launch Alliance's Atlas V launch vehicle. The OA-5 mission will be the first Antares mission to launch the enhanced Cygnus.
Orbital ATK has successfully completed five cargo delivery missions to the ISS, including a demonstration mission in 2013 and four operational missions under the CRS-1 contract from 2014 to present. In total, the company has delivered 24,000 pounds (10,900 kilograms) of essential equipment and supplies in support of ISS crew and operations.
Under the CRS contract with NASA, Orbital ATK will deliver approximately 62,000 pounds (28,000 kilograms) of cargo to the ISS over 11 missions through 2018. The partnership is changing the way NASA does business, helping build a strong American commercial space industry and freeing the agency to focus on developing the next-generation rocket and spacecraft that will enable humans to travel farther in space than ever before. Orbital ATK is also on contract for six initial missions for the follow-on CRS-2 program.

Space News.
Cargo is delivered to the station using Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft. The Cygnus spacecraft consists of two modules: the Service Module (SM) which incorporates the avionics, propulsion and power systems fr om Orbital ATK's flight proven LEOStar and GEOStar spacecraft buses; and the Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) which carries the crew supplies, spares and scientific experiments. The SM is integrated and tested at Orbital ATK's Dulles, Virginia satellite manufacturing facility. The PCM is supplied by Thales Alenia Space and is produced in Turin Italy.

Media accreditation now is open, with new launch dates, for the next NASA-contracted cargo resupply flight launching from Virginia to the International Space Station.
Orbital ATK is targeting no earlier than Oct. 9-13 for the launch of its Cygnus spacecraft on an Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Pad-0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia. A more specific date will be identified after completion of final operational milestones and technical reviews. Launch times range from 10:47 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 9 to 9:13 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.
International media without U.S. citizenship must have previously applied for credentials to cover the prelaunch and launch activities at Wallops. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 30 for media who are U.S. citizens. Media should send their accreditation request to Keith Koehler atkeith.a.koehler@nasa.gov (mailto:keith.a.koehler@nasa.gov). For questions about accreditation or additional information, contact Koehler by email or at 757-824-1579.
This will be the sixth planned cargo resupply mission by Orbital ATK under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract with the company and the fourth launch from Virginia. Cargo resupply by U.S. companies enables a national capability to deliver critical science research to the space station, significantly increasing NASA's ability to conduct new science investigations aboard the world's only microgravity laboratory.

For the Antares Return to Flight, Orbital ATK will rely on the Energomash RD-181 rocket motor. It is an all-new engine based on other successful liquid rocket engines Energomash designed and produced. The engines use an oxygen-rich staged combustion cycle that can be throttled, and has a variable mixture ratio for controlling relative flow rates of oxidizer and fuel.
The Energomash RD-181 is an all new engine based on successful models.
The Antares second stage is powered by a CASTOR 30XL solid rocket motor produced and tested at Orbital ATK facilities in Utah. The CASTOR 30XL is based on the CASTOR 120, used in more than a dozen missions. The OA-5 mission will be the first use of this motor, allowing Antares to significantly increase its payload capability.
The CASTOR 30XL solid rocket motor will help boost Cygnus payload capacity.
The Antares 230 rocket for this mission is a two-stage launch vehicle consisting of a liquid-fueled Liquid Oxygen/Refined Petroleum (LOX/RP) first stage powered by two Energomash RD-181s that will burn about 209 seconds. Antares employs a 9.9 m (32.5 ft.) long fairing to protect Cygnus as Antares accelerates through Earth's atmosphere. It will separate at 250 seconds into flight, after which the second stage will burn about 163 seconds. The Cygnus cargo capsule will reach its initial orbit about 9 minutes after launch.

"One of the least understood risks in space is how a fire starts, how it propagates, how you will detect the fire and how you put it out," said Jintendra Joshi, Saffire technology integration lead for the Advanced Exploration Systems Division at NASA Headquarters.
The first Saffire experiment showed slower than expected spread of fire in a convective air flow environment in the experiment capsule, Joshi said. Further exploration "will help us make space travel safer," he said.
Future experiments will try burning in different conditions, then investigate strategies for putting fires out.
The Cool Flames experiment will investigate why some combustible materials seem to burn at a lower-than-expected temperature in micro-gravity. "In certain cases with certain fuels something unexpected happens that can't be replicated on the ground," said Jesse Robins of NASA's Glenn Research Center.
What you see, he said, is after an initial hot burn the visible flame extinquishes but the fuel droplet size diminishes at a faster rate than evaporation would suggest. Sometimes the fuel can re-ignite, he said, "like a trick birthday candle."

- баки окислителя и горючего;
- хвостовой отсек и отсек удержания;
- пневмогидравлическую систему;
- систему управления расходованием топлива;
- систему контраля температур;

"Since it was the first flight of this configuration, we had fairly conservative estimates of what the results would be," he said. "The first stage was a little bit above what we expected."

Expedition 50 robotic arm operators Shane Kimbrough of NASA and Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) commanded the International Space Station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to release the Cygnus spacecraft at 8:22 a.m. EST while the space station was flying 251 miles over the Pacific Ocean, off the west coast of Colombia. Earlier, ground controllers detached Cygnus from the station and maneuvered it into place for its departure.
Once Cygnus is a safe distance away from the station, ground controllers at Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio and at Orbital ATK in Dulles, Virginia, will activate the Saffire-II experiment.
Cygnus also will release four LEMUR CubeSats (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/experiments/2349.html) from an external deployer on Friday, Nov. 25, sending them to join a remote sensing satellite constellation that provides global ship tracking and weather monitoring.
The spacecraft will remain in orbit until Sunday, Nov. 27, when its engines will fire twice, pushing it into Earth's atmosphere, wh ere it will burn up over the Pacific Ocean.
The Cygnus resupply craft launched Oct. 17 on an Antares rocket from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, for the company's sixth NASA-contracted commercial resupply mission. The company's seventh contracted resupply mission (https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-orbital-atk-target-spring-2017-for-next-cargo-mission) is targeted for spring 2017 on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

ЦитироватьOrbital ATK's OA-5 Mission Begins Next Phase, Performing Experiments in SpaceThe "S.S. Alan Poindexter" Cygnus Departs International Space Station After Another Successful Delivery and Removal of Critical Cargo
Next Phase of Mission Marks Second Time Cygnus Used as a Science PlatformDulles, Virginia 21 November 2016 – Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA), a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, today announced that its Cygnus™ spacecraft successfully unberthed from the International Space Station, starting the second phase of its mission before it reenters Earth's atmosphere. Orbiting on its own, free of the ISS, the "S.S. Alan Poindexter" Cygnus will conduct two secondary mission objectives as part of its flight program: the Saffire-II payload experiment and the deployment of CubeSats to enhance weather forecasting capabilities. This is the second time Orbital ATK will use a Cygnus spacecraft as a platform for conducting science experiments in space.
"Cygnus had a successful, month-long stay at the International Space Station, delivering critical cargo to the astronauts," said Frank Culbertson, President of Orbital ATK's Space Systems Group. "Now, we get another opportunity to showcase this unique spacecraft's expanded capabilities beyond its core cargo delivery function. To use Cygnus yet again as a research platform demonstrates a versatility and flexibility that we are proud to offer to our customers."
Cygnus departed from the International Space Station at 8:22 a.m. EST on November 21, completing a 29 day stay at the orbiting laboratory. The mission, known as OA-5, began on October 17, 2016 when Cygnus launched aboard an upgraded Antares rocket from NASA Wallops Flight Facility, marking Orbital ATK's return to flight operations in eastern Virginia. Upon arrival at the station, Cygnus delivered 5,300 pounds (2,400 kilograms) of cargo and science experiments to the astronauts. The Expedition 50 crew members loaded the cargo module with approximately 2,469 pounds (1,120 kilograms) of items for disposal prior to Cygnus' departure.
The Spacecraft Fire Experiment-II (Saffire-II), which was developed at NASA's Glenn Research Center and funded by NASA's Advanced Exploration Systems Division, is the second in a series of tests to study the behavior of large-scale fires in microgravity. Orbital ATK engineers will remotely conduct this experiment from the ground once Cygnus departs the International Space Station. The experiment will intentionally ignite nine different experimental material samples to help investigators better understand flammability of these materials in a microgravity environment. All data obtained from this experiment will be downloaded via telemetry.
Next, the "S.S. Alan Poindexter" will use a NanoRacks deployer to place several CubeSats into orbit to conduct meteorological research. The OA-5 mission is slated to end on November 27 when Cygnus is scheduled for a safe, destructive reentry into Earth's atmosphere.

- 'Just light it on fire' -
The Saffire project seeks to find out if an upward spreading flame will continue to grow, or if microgravity will limit the size of the fire.
It also aims to reveal which fabrics and materials will catch fire and how they will burn.
Before any of this could be tried in space, scientists had to find a spaceship on which to stage their experiments.
With astronauts' lives at risk, not to mention expensive spacecraft components, there were no takers until Orbital offered its unmanned Cygnus, which burns up anyway on re-entry. SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship is made to return to Earth intact.
"My initial idea was just to light the trash on fire and see what happens," principal investigator David Urban told AFP.
"But for various reasons -- not the least of which was I needed to get the data back -- that was not quite the way we went."
Instead, an international team of researchers including the European Space Agency made nine compartments for materials to be set ablaze.
These included "flame retardant fabrics used for astronaut clothing, station Plexiglas window samples with edge variations and structures used for storage containers and silicone composites," NASA said.
Each sample is two by 11 inches (five by 28 centimeters), and is placed in a separate compartment for the fire study.
Two high-definition video cameras are placed inside, collectively filming all the samples, said Urban, chief of the combustion physics and reacting processes branch at NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio.
Hot wires were scheduled to ignite the first of the fires Monday afternoon.
Images and data will not arrive back on Earth until Tuesday, Urban said.
Not all of the samples are expected to ignite, said Urban. If they did, it would be "very surprising."
Another Saffire experiment is planned for early 2017.

Saffire-II: Ignition scheduled for Nov. 21, 2016
Saffire-II launched inside Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft during its sixth contracted cargo resupply mission with NASA to the International Space Station in October 2016. This second in the Spacecraft Fire Safety Series builds on the data captured during Saffire-I and expands the test portfolio with new materials. The nine samples in the experiment kit include a cotton-fiberglass blend, Nomex, and the same acrylic glass that is used for spacecraft windows. After Cygnus departs the station, and before its destructive reentry to Earth, mission controllers on the ground will remotely ignite the samples.[/li]

Historic Maneuver: Cygnus Boosts Altitude After ISS Undocking for Deployment of Spire Satellites
With NASA approval, Cygnus deploys Spire satellites into higher orbit after space station resupply mission
San Francisco, Calif - [November 25th, 2016] – Cygnus CRS OA-5, which arrived at the International Space Station on October 23rd, has undocked fr om the ISS and boosted its altitude to about 500km before releasing four Spire satellites into orbit via the NanoRacks External CubeSat deployer. The mission, which has been approved by NASA, is the first of its kind to deploy satellites into a higher orbit after departing fr om the ISS.
The altitude boost provided by Cygnus to approximately 500km increases the on-orbit lifespan of the Spire's LEMUR-2 satellites from about 9 months in a typical ISS deployment to at least 2 years. That amount of time is just inside a CubeSat "goldilocks" zone wh ere their long-term usefulness and orbital life are in near-equilibrium. Spire, NanoRacks, NASA and Orbital worked closely to make this unique opportunity a reality and it highlights yet another commercial application of the ISS that is beneficial to the satellite industry. Spire is incredibly pleased to have been a part of this historic joint effort between industry and government.
This deployment brings the company's launch total to 21 satellites – 16 of which are currently in orbit providing data for Spire's ship tracking and weather data clients. With this deployment and the recent loss of another ORBCOMM OG2 satellite, announced during their most recent earnings call, Spire now has the largest constellation of ship tracking satellites in the world.
An orbit boost after an ISS supply mission has been a goal of many people at NanoRacks, Orbital, and Spire. Jenny Barna, Spire's Launch Manager and former propulsion engineer at Orbital, realized there was potential for an expanded mission the moment that Orbital announced the decision to launch a Cygnus resupply mission with ULA, and began to seek an opportunity, reaching out to former colleagues and industry partners. "Initially, the extra performance of the Atlas-5 was what got my attention; my hope was for a traditional secondary payload approach, wh ere satellites could be dropped off in a higher, mid-inclination orbit after Cygnus was released," explained Barna. "What emerged instead leveraged the performance of the Cygnus spacecraft itself as well as NanoRacks' proven deployment capability. It's truly an innovative mission profile and we're honored to ride with Cygnus to space, "explained Barna. "The effort that NanoRacks, Orbital and NASA have put forth to make this a reality is a testament to the brilliance of public-private partnerships."
