December launch plan to improve transponder supply

National space agency ISRO has decided to launch one of its upcoming communication satellites, GSAT-16, six months earlier than planned.
The 3,100-kg spacecraft, meant to support public and private television and radio services, large-scale Internet and telephone operations, was originally planned to be flown up around June 2015 on a European Ariane-5 launcher.
The decision to advance GSAT-16 launch came after the older INSAT-3E expired in March this year, according to ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan.
The plan to move an ISRO mission ahead is almost unprecedented. "GSAT-16 will replace INSAT-3E [in the same space orbit at 55 degrees East longitude]. It was planned to be launched in the middle of 2015. After 3E was decommissioned in April, we advanced GSAT-16, which will now go in December this year," he told The Hindu recently.
The assembly venue in Bangalore, the ISRO Satellite Centre or ISAC, is ready with the spacecraft. "Advancing a satellite by five to six months is a difficult job, but we did it. We also got a slot from [launch company] Arianespace and as of now, we are talking of a launch [around] December 6," he said. An earliest launch would otherwise have been April 2015.
GSAT-16 will offer 24 transponders in the C-band, 12 in the extended C-band and another 12 in the Ku band.
Over the last couple of years, the space agency has been trying hard to augment transponder capacity — which is about 190 on its own fleet — to meet increasing demand from commercial and public service users. It also had to lease 90 transponders on foreign satellites to meet its shortfall.
Last year, the government approved an allocation of Rs. 865.5 crore towards building GSAT-16, the fee for its foreign launch and insurance; the latter is taken when ISRO uses a foreign launch.
ISRO had to opt for an outside launch as Indian rockets PSLV and the present GSLV cannot lift satellites weighing above 2,000 kg. ISRO is developing the next big launcher, GSLV-MkIII, which can put satellites of up to 4 tonnes in orbit.

ЦитироватьDIRECTV-14 lands in French Guiana while assembly begins for its Ariane 5 launcher

October 10, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA221
Preparations for Arianespace's sixth Ariane 5 mission in 2014 are gearing up with two separate milestones marked this week in French Guiana: arrival of one of the flight's two satellite passengers – DIRECTV-14 – and the assembly start-up for its heavy-lift launcher.
The DIRECTV-14 spacecraft – which was built by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) for operator DIRECTV – was transported by a chartered An-124 cargo jetliner that landed at Félix Eboué International Airport near the capital city of Cayenne, then unloaded for its transfer by road to the Spaceport.
Based on SSL's 1300-series platform, this high-capacity satellite is to strengthen DIRECTV's direct-to-home (DTH) digital entertainment services across the United States and Puerto Rico.
In parallel activity, the mission's Ariane 5 is coming together as initial build-up procedures involving this workhorse vehicle are performed in French Guiana.
Located inside the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, the Ariane 5 began taking shape during a multi-step process with positioning of the vehicle's cryogenic core stage over its mobile launch table, followed by integration of the two solid propellant boosters.
The mission is designated Flight VA221 in Arianespace's numbering system, on which DIRECT-14 will be joined by its co-passenger: the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) GSAT-16 telecommunications satellite.

ЦитироватьGSAT-16 is put through its paces for Arianespace's upcoming Ariane 5 flight

 November 7, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA221
The Indian GSAT-16 telecommunications satellite for Arianespace's next heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission is undergoing a detailed checkout at the Spaceport in French Guiana ahead of its scheduled liftoff on December 4.
GSAT-16 was designed, assembled and integrated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and validations performed in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility include its initial fit-check with launch vehicle hardware, as well as solar panel deployment.
The latter step involved the extension of GSAT-16's multi-segment solar panels, validating the proper operation before they are definitively stowed against the satellite in the final liftoff configuration. This particular test uses an overhead latticework that helps support the solar panel's weight – simulating zero gravity conditions of space as the panel opens to its full length.
GSAT-16 will weigh approximately 3,150 kg. at liftoff, and is to deliver C- and Ku-band telecommunications services that include very small aperture terminal (VSAT) transmissions, TV broadcasting and emergency communications.
For the upcoming launch, GSAT-16 will be joined by its co-passenger: DIRECTV-14, which was built by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) for operator DIRECTV.
The December 4 flight with Ariane 5 is designated VA221 in Arianespace's numbering system for its family of launchers, which also includes the medium-lift Soyuz and light-lift Vega.

ЦитироватьDIRECTV-14 is "pointed" for its liftoff next week on Arianespace's dual-payload Ariane 5 mission

 November 26, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA221
The upper passenger for Arianespace's dual-satellite launch from French Guiana next week has been encapsulated in its protective payload fairing, preparing the DIRECTV-14 relay platform for its integration on Ariane 5.
During activity in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for Ariane 5, DIRECTV-14 was mounted on the launcher's SYLDA dispenser unit, followed by the lowering of a large ogive-shaped payload fairing over the combined unit – creating the mission's "upper composite" section.
With this step completed, the upper composite is now ready to be integrated on the launcher by its positioning atop the mission's other passenger, India's GSAT-16 satellite, which is to be integrated on Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage.
DIRECTV-14 is the larger of Ariane 5's two passengers on the December 4 mission, and will serve as a 20-kilowatt class Ka-band and reverse-band digital broadcast satellite to deliver Ultra HD and other new consumer services for DIRECTV. Based on the SSL (Space Systems/Loral) 1300 spacecraft platform with a liftoff mass of approximately 6,300 kg., it is to provide service for users across the U.S. (including Hawaii and Alaska) and Puerto Rico.
The GSAT-16 satellite that also will be launched on the upcoming Ariane 5 mission was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and carries Ku- and C-band transponders to further augment communication services across India. GSAT-16's liftoff mass is estimated at 3,180 kg.
Arianespace's December 4 launch is designed Flight VA221 in the company's launcher family numbering system, signifying the 221st liftoff of an Ariane family vehicle from the Spaceport.

Цитировать Ariane 5 delivers DIRECTV-14 and GSAT-16 to orbit on Arianespace's latest mission success

 December 6, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA221
Telecommunications satellites for two long-standing Arianespace customers were launched today on the company's sixth Ariane 5 flight in 2014, extending the heavy-lift workhorse's string of consecutive successes to 63.
Delivering a total payload lift performance of approximately 10,200 kg., the mission – designated Flight VA221 in Arianespace's numbering system – lofted DIRECTV-14 for operator DIRECTV, along with the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) GSAT-16.
The DIRECTV-14 spacecraft was deployed first in the flight sequence, separating from Ariane 5 nearly 28 minutes after liftoff, followed four minutes later by its GSAT-16 co-passenger.

A launch for two long-time customers
Today's heavy-lift success on Flight VA221 continues long relationships of trust between Arianespace and each of the mission's two customers.
The company lofted its first DIRECTV satellite in 1993 (DIRECTV-11 using an Ariane 44L version), and in total has orbited seven spacecraft for this operator – including DIRECTV-14, which also represents the 46th SSL-built (Space Systems/Loral) payload to be launched by Arianespace.
To operate from an orbital location of 99 deg. West, DIRECTV-14 is a 20-kilowatt class Ka-band and reverse-band digital broadcast satellite that will deliver Ultra HD and other new consumer services for DIRECTV. It is based on the SSL 1300 spacecraft platform with a liftoff mass of approximately 6,300 kg., and is to provide service for users across the U.S. (including Hawaii and Alaska) and Puerto Rico.
ISRO has been an Arianespace customer for 33 years, beginning with the Ariane 1 launch of its APPLE spacecraft in 1981. Since then, 17 more of the Indian space agency's payloads have been launched – capped off with the successful deployment of GSAT-16 today.
With a liftoff mass estimated at 3,180 kg., GSAT-16 carries Ku- and C-band transponders to further augment communication services across India – operating from an orbital position of 55 deg. East.
Flight VA221 also pushed Arianespace "over the top" for a record combined payload mass orbited from French Guiana in a single year: 74.3 tons – eclipsing the previous mark set by the company in 2012.
Arianespace's next mission will be the December 18 flight of a medium-lift Soyuz from French Guiana, which will deploy the next four connectivity satellites for operator O3b Networks.

ЦитироватьArianespace VA221 launches satellites for the United States and India

Kourou, December 6, 2014

The sixth Ariane 5 launch of 2014 reflects the long-term relationship of mutual trust that Arianespace has established with the world's leading space telecom operators

Arianespace has successfully launched two telecommunications satellites, DIRECTV-14 for the operator DIRECTV, and GSAT-16 for ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation. The 63rd successful Ariane 5 launch in a row took place on December 6 at 5:40 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. Having orbited nearly 65% of all commercial satellites to date in 2014, Arianespace clearly sets the standard in launch services for all manufacturers and operators.

A launch that symbolizes the long term relationship established by Arianespace and leading operators for over 20 years

The DIRECTV-14 satellite will provide direct-to-home (DTH) TV broadcasting services in HD (high definition) and 4K Ultra HD in North America, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It is the seventh satellite to be launched by Arianespace with a payload for DIRECTV, and also the 46th satellite built by Space Systems/Loral to be orbited by Arianespace.

GSAT-16, a multi-band, multi-application telecommunications satellite, will cover the entire Indian sub-continent. It is the 18th ISRO satellite to be launched by Arianespace, starting with the Apple experimental satellite in 1981. Arianespace has also launched two other Indian-designed satellites, for the operators Eutelsat and Avanti Communications.

Commercial launch services leader sets new annual payload record

With this latest launch, Arianespace has set a new annual record for payload weight, with all launchers in its family orbiting a total of 74.3 metric tons in 2014 (versus 52.2 in 2013 and 74.1 in 2012).

Arianespace also confirms its position as the leader in commercial launches into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), with nearly 65% of the market. At December 4, 2014, Arianespace had orbited nine out of the 14 commercial geostationary satellites launched during the year.

Shortly after the announcement that the satellites had been injected into orbit, Arianespace Chairman and CEO Stéphane Israël said: "Tonight, we are very proud of meeting the expectations of these two loyal customers, whose diversity clearly reflects our clientele: DIRECTV is a private operator based in the United States that provides direct-to-home broadcast services, while ISRO is a state agency and public operator, in charge of a wide range of satcom applications for the benefit of Indian citizens. I would like to thank both of these prestigious organizations for continuing to place their trust in us, launch after launch, which encourages us to constantly improve our services.

"I would also like to thank everybody who contributed to Arianespace's tenth successful launch of the year: the joint venture Airbus Safran Launchers and its European partners, who all contribute to this launcher's exceptional reliability; our partner CNES-CSG and everybody at the spaceport, for their record-setting availability since the beginning of the year; and of course all of Arianespace's own teams, whose dedication is only equaled by their excellence across the board."
