The ABS-2 is a communication satellite ordered in October 2010 by Asia Broadcast Satellite fr om Space Systems/Loral (SS/L). SS/L was already selected as the builder in June 2009.

The spacecraft separated mass will be in excess of 6,000 kg at launch and offers a design life exceeding 15 years. The satellite will be built by Space Systems Loral using the LS-1300 platform, fitted with 78 C-, Ku- and Ka-band payloads and will have more than four times the existing capacity of ABS-1.

ABS-2 will be located at the 75 degrees East Longitude, ABS' prime orbital location wh ere ABS-1, ABS-1A, and ABS-1B are currently located ABS-2 will offer a wide range of services for Asia, Russia, Africa, and the Middle East, including DTH, cable TV distribution, multimedia applications, as well as data networks and telecommunications services. The ABS-2 satellite will be a significant addition to the existing 44 transponders on the ABS-1 satellite, which still has more than 14 years of fuel life remaining. ABS-2 will provide expansion capacity to existing ABS-1 customers and will also act as in-orbit spare and provide backup for the ABS-1 transponders.

Singapore Telecommunications has signed a transponder purchase agreement with satellite operator Asia Broadcast Satellite Limited (ABS). With this agreement, SingTel will own multiple C-band transponders on the ABS-2 satellite at a cost of approximately S$80 million over the next two years. SingTel will market these transponders to corporate customers under the brand ST-3/ABS-2. Capacity used by KT Telecom is referred as Koreasat 8.

Athena-Fidus [TAS]

Athena-Fidus is a French-Italian geosynchronous military and governmental EHF/Ka-band wideband communications satellite capable of data transfer rates of up to 3 Gb per second.

The Athena-Fidus program is being managed by French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) and Space Agency (CNES) and the Italian Defense Procurement Agency (Segredifesa) and the Space Agency (ASI). CNES signed in February 2010 a contract over 275 million euros with Thales Alenia Space for the construction of the satellite. Once operational, the system will be used by both the French, Belgian and Italian armed forces as well as the civil protection services of France and Italy.

Athena-Fidus is built on a Spacebus-4000B2 platform and will be launched in early 2014 on an Ariane-5ECA launch vehicle from Kourou.

The multi-role Athena-Fidus satellite has completed initial checkout at the Spaceport as it is readied for a dual-payload, geostationary transfer orbit launch on Arianespace's first flight in 2014.

To be lofted January 23 from French Guiana along with the ABS-2 spacecraft aboard a heavy-lift Arianespace Ariane 5, this mission will commence a very busy 2014 – with 12 to 14 launches in preparation.
The year-opening mission carrying Athena-Fidus and ABS-2 is designated Flight VA217 in Arianespace's numbering system, signifying the 217th launch of an Ariane vehicle since the European-developed launcher family began operations on December 24, 1979.
Athena-Fidus was built by program prime contractor Thales Alenia Space on behalf of the French CNES and Italian ASI space agencies, as well as the French DGA and Italian Segredifesa defense ministry organizations. It will provide data transmission services for the French and Italian defense ministries, as well as these countries' security organizations.         
The satellite carries EHF and Ka-band transponders for the defense requirements of the two nations, while also serving such operations as civil and homeland security, law enforcement and firefighting.  It derives the Athena-Fidus name from the program reference "Access on theatres for European allied forces nations-French Italian dual use satellite," and is based on a Spacebus 4000 relay platform.  With a liftoff mass of more than 3,000 kg., the spacecraft has an operational design life exceeding 15 years.

This mission is scheduled to loft two passengers: the French-Italian Athena-Fidus spacecraft and ABS-2 for global satellite operator ABS.

Arianespace has announced the timeframe for its initial three missions this year – covering two Ariane 5 liftoffs and one Soyuz flight – that will kick off the company's busy 2014 launch manifest.

Lofting five payloads in total, these missions will commence this year's accelerated pace from the Spaceport, as Arianespace targets 12 missions from French Guiana in 2014 based on payload availability, which would surpass the company's previous yearly-record of 10 launches during 2012.

Designated Flight VA217 in the company's numbering system, the Ariane 5 mission with the French-Italian Athena-Fidus satellite and ABS-2 spacecraft for global operator ABS will initiate this year's launch activity, with liftoff now set for February 6 at 5:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 workhorse will also perform Arianespace's second mission this year – scheduled for March 7 – which is to loft SES' Astra 5B and HISPASAT's Amazonas 4A spacecraft on Flight VA216.

The seventh medium-weight Soyuz flight from the Spaceport – designated Flight VS07 – will round out Arianespace's first three 2014 missions. It is slated for March 28, and will carry Sentinel 1A for the European Space Agency (ESA).

Arianespace's complete launcher family will be active from the Spaceport in 2014, with six Ariane 5 liftoffs, four Soyuz flights and two lightweight Vega launches targeted for this year to meet the company's objective of 12 total missions.

Encapsulated in its ogive-shaped protective fairing, ABS-2 was lowered into place yesterday over Athena-Fidus – which had been installed atop Ariane 5's cryogenic core stage during activity earlier in the week.
These integration steps were performed inside the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building for Ariane 5, and enable a new series of preparation milestones to begin. They include the launch readiness review on February 4, followed by Ariane 5's rollout to the ELA-3 launch zone the subsequent day.
Liftoff is scheduled during a 2-hr., 5-min. launch window opening February 6 at 5:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with the two spacecraft to be deployed on a flight lasting approximately 32 minutes.
Ariane 5 will deliver a payload lift performance of more than 10,200 kg. during the mission, which includes a combined total of over 9,400 kg. for ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus, plus the launch vehicle's dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.
ABS-2 will ride as the mission's upper passenger, to be deployed first in its flight sequence. Approval for this flight was issued following today's launch readiness review, which is held prior to every Arianespace mission – confirming the "go" status of the launcher, its payload, the Spaceport's infrastructure and the system of downrange tracking stations.

With today's review, the Ariane 5 is now cleared for rollout tomorrow from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone – wh ere it will be readied for liftoff on February 6 during a 2-hr., 5-min. launch window opening at 5:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

The payload lift performance for Arianespace's latest Ariane 5 flight is approximately 10,210 kg., which includes a combined total of some 9,410 kg. for ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus, along with the launcher's SYLDA dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

Produced by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) for global satellite operator ABS, the ABS-2 spacecraft will provide multiple services that include direct-to-home and cable television distribution, VSAT, data networks and telecommunications, as well as the supply of substantial new capacity from the operator's prime orbital location at 75 deg. East.

Thales Alenia Space built Athena-Fidus on behalf of the French CNES and Italian ASI space agencies, as well as the French DGA and Italian Segredifesa defense ministry organizations. After its deployment by Ariane 5, the satellite will provide data transmission services for the French and Italian defense ministries, as well as these countries' security organizations.

Событие является знаковым для развития всего российского телевидения, в частности, для каналов ВГТРК. Сигналы эфирных каналов холдинга, а также каналов пакета "Цифровое Телевидение", в который входят "Наука 2.0", "Моя планета", "Бойцовский клуб", "Сарафан", "История", "Страна", "Русский роман" и многие другие, будут распространяться именно с этого спутника. ABS-2 займет орбитальную позицию 75 градусов восточной долготы, которая является уникальной для территории России. Только вещание из этой точки позволяет посредством одного космического аппарата покрыть максимальную территорию: от Калининграда до Сахалина, а также страны СНГ и Балтии.

Срок службы космических аппаратов в среднем 15 лет, а мы с вами понимаем, как на сегодняшний день стремительно развиваются технологии, и то, что было актуально 10 лет назад, сегодня "прошлый век", — отмечает генеральный директор компании-дистрибутора "Цифрового Телевидения" ВГТРК "Сигнал Медиа" Михаил Ковальчук. — Еще один важный момент, который даст толчок развитию рынка платного телевидения, этот спутник позволит впервые в истории неэфирного телевидения привести телевидение высокой четкости (HD) на всей территории РФ (сейчас большинство спутников покрывают европейскую часть РФ, не позволяя за Уралом получать современное телевидение)".

Среди HD каналов ВГТРК, которые будут доступны на спутнике ABS-2, — Россия HD и Спорт 1 HD, а в скором времени и российский познавательный канал IQ HD. По словам Ковальчука, все каналы ВГТРК будут собраны на одном транспондере, что максимально упростит операторам платного телевидения прием и ретрансляцию неэфирных каналов ВГТРК в сети.

Телеканал "Наука 2.0", входящий в пакет ВГТРК "Цифровое Телевидение", является ведущим российским телеканалом о российской и мировой науке. Канал регулярно предоставляет зрителям эксклюзивную возможность следить за главными событиями в мире науки в режиме реального времени. Так, ранее транслировались церемония оглашения и награждения Нобелевских лауреатов, выход в открытый космос двух российских космонавтов — Федора Юрчихина и Александра Мисуркина, запуск спутника "Союз-СТ-Б", и многое другое.

 This delay marks the first time since August 2011 that an Ariane 5 countdown was put on hold, breaking a streak of 12 on-time launches once the rocket was fueled. The last time an Ariane 5 launch was delayed after rollout was November 2012.

Raindrops continue falling on the camera lens at the Ariane 5 launch pad, but rain itself will not prohibit launch. The main concerns for the Ariane 5 rocket are thick cumulus clouds , lightning and surface and high-altitude winds.

в понедельник запуск коммерческого вещания. Подняли сигнал до уровня, необходимого для устойчивого приема на тарелки 60 см, как и было заявлено ранее. Тесты закончились - начинаются "рабочие будни"!
