Meantime, the Antares production team will keep pressing forward on the third Antares rocket that will launch the first of eight Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) missions. The CRS-1 mission is slated to take place in the fourth quarter of this year. For the CRS-1 mission, both AJ26 engines for that rocket have been fully tested and are already at Wallops. In addition, the two major components of the Cygnus spacecraft to be used for CRS-1 are complete and will be mated and integrated at Wallops this fall. The Service Module is fully tested and ready to be shipped to Wallops from Orbital's Dulles manufacturing facility, and the Pressurized Cargo Module is also complete and awaiting shipment to Wallops from Thales Alenia's plant in Turin, Italy.

SAN FRANCISCO — Planet Labs is seeking to revolutionize the Earth imaging industry with a constellation of 28 nanosatellites designed to offer frequent, low-cost images of any point on the globe. By providing high-resolution imagery, quickly and inexpensively, the company's founders hope to expand dramatically the customer base for Earth imagery and the use of that information to address humanitarian, environmental and business concerns.

"We are motivated to make information about the changing planet available to all people, especially the people who need it the most," said Robbie Schingler, co-founder of the company previously known as Cosmogia Inc. "The imagery could be used by anyone who cares about changes in land use over time."

After fending off media queries for months, executives of the San Francisco-based startup revealed plans June 26 to launch in December a constellation of 28 cubesats designed to provide imagery with a resolution of three to five meters. The constellation, known as Flock-1, is scheduled to fly on the first of eight Orbital Sciences Corp. cargo transportation flights to the international space station as part of NASA's Commercial Resupply Services program.

In 2012, Planet Labs raised $13 million in venture capital funding for its Earth-imaging constellation fr om investment firms, including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Capricorn Investment Group, O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Founders Fund's FF Angel, Innovation Endeavors, Data Collective and First Round Capital, company officials said.

Planet Labs founders, Schingler, William Marshall and Chris Boshuizen, are physicists and entrepreneurs who previously worked for NASA. Schingler served as the chief of staff in NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist from June 2010 to October 2011. Marshall and Boshuizen worked in the NASA Ames Research Center's small spacecraft office wh ere they helped to create PhoneSat, a project designed to test whether commercial smartphone components could be used in place of traditional space-qualified hardware.

Unlike PhoneSat, Planet Labs develops its own technology. However, company engineers draw on recent breakthroughs in commercial communications and computing technology. "We are trying to leverage the billions of dollars companies have spent miniaturizing electronics to advance satellite systems," Marshall said.

While much of the hardware Planet Labs plans to fly in its cubesat constellation does not have a lengthy spaceflight heritage, company executives said the constellation gains its resilience from its size. By design, it includes more satellites than necessary to provide global coverage.

The large size of Flock-1 also eliminates the need to task satellite cameras to obtain imagery of specific regions to satisfy customer demand. In the course of routine operations, Planet Labs will collect frequent imagery of latitudes within 52 degrees of the equator, an area that covers the vast majority the world's population and agricultural regions. Company officials declined to specify how frequently they plan to publish updated imagery.

Planet Labs officials are quick to point out that in spite of the large number of spacecraft they plan to launch, they are taking pains to ensure their cubesats do not aggravate the problem of space debris. "We factored this into our design from the first day," said Marshall, who conducted orbital debris research while working at NASA. "Our constellation flies very low and far away from congested areas in space. We have the ability to move to avoid a potential conjunction. And the satellites will disintegrate into the atmosphere in singles of years to avoid becoming space debris."

Flock-1 satellites are scheduled to occupy a 400-kilometer, circular orbit at an inclination of 52 degrees relative to the equator. That location allows onboard cameras to obtain higher resolution imagery and to transmit more data than would be possible if the miniature spacecraft operated in higher orbits, Schingler said.

Planet Labs currently has 33 full-time employees. The staff is comprised primarily of engineers who previously worked at NASA, Space Exploration Technologies Corp., Space Systems/Loral, United Technologies Corp.'s Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Google Inc. and Facebook Inc., Schingler said.

The Cygnus PCM is schedule to arrive around 6 p.m., via an Antonov An-124 aircraft.  The An-124 is the world's second largest operating cargo aircraft.  It is being shipped fr om the Thales Alenia Space's facility in Turin Italy, wh ere it is manufactured under a subcontract from Orbital.

The Cygnus PCM will be unloaded from the An-124 and delivered to the Payload Processing Facility at NASA Wallops.  Over the next few months, Orbital's engineering team will load it with supplies bound for the ISS and will integrate it with the spacecraft's service module which houses the spacecraft's avionics, propulsion and power systems. Orbital builds and tests the service module at it Dulles, Va., manufacturing facilities and ships the completed unit to Wallops for integration with the PCM.

Orbital is currently scheduled to launch its first Cygnus mission to the ISS under the Commercial Orbital Transportations Services (COTS) development program in September with the first complete Cygnus that is already at Wallops awaiting integration with Orbital's Antares rocket.  All of Orbital's ISS cargo resupply missions will occur from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's pad 0A at Wallops.

   WASHINGTON — Orbital Sciences Corp., which is preparing to send its Cygnus cargo freighter to the international space station (ISS) for the first time later this month, was put on notice Sept. 4 by a NASA official who said the Dulles, Va., company could be needed for another cargo run as soon as December because Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) — the agency's other cargo-delivery contractor — likely will not be ready to fly.

Orbital is slated to launch Cygnus Sept. 17 fr om the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va. It will be Cygnus' maiden flight and the sophomore effort for its Antares carrier rocket, which flew successfully in its own demo mission April 21. Orbital is slated to carry nonessential cargo to ISS in order to prove the company is ready to begin service under the eight-flight, $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract it signed with NASA in 2008.
SpaceX also got a delivery contract from NASA in 2008: a 12-flight deal worth $1.8 billion. The Hawthorne, Calif., company already has made two of those runs, the second of which wrapped up in March. Since then, SpaceX has been working on a more powerful variant of the Falcon 9 rocket that launched those missions, as well as an enhanced version of its Dragon space capsule.
That work will keep SpaceX from returning to ISS in 2013, said Michael Suffredini, NASA's ISS program manager at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
"I would not expect them to be ready in December, or even January time frame," Suffredini said during a Sept. 4 press briefing from Johnson.
SpaceX spokeswoman Christina Ra, reached by email Sept. 4, had no immediate comment."
Par for the course during the development of a new launch vehicle, SpaceX ran into delays with its so-called Falcon 9 1.1, which is slated to debut Sept. 14 from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The rocket will not carry Dragon on that launch, but a Canadian space weather satellite called Cassiope and several ride-along payloads.
Should Orbital be called upon to make its first contracted cargo run in December, it could mean turning around its launch pad, rocket and spacecraft in just under three months. Back in 2012, SpaceX flew its first contracted cargo run about four months after successfully completing the same type of demonstration mission Orbital will attempt Sept. 17 from the Virginia coast.
In April, Mike Laidley, Orbital's program director for Antares, said the minimum turnaround time between Antares missions is about one month.
Even if both SpaceX and Orbital should be unavailable in December, Suffredini said ISS is well provisioned and could ride out a missed delivery.
The Ukrainian-built core-stage of each Antares rocket uses two AJ-26 engines, Soviet-vintage, kerosene-fueled engines from a failed Russian Moon exploration program that have been upgraded, refurbished and rebadged by Aerojet Rocketdyne of Sacramento, Calif. Antares' upper stage is powered by a solid motor provided by ATK Aerospace of Magna, Utah. Cygnus, which is assembled by Orbital at its Dulles campus is built around a pressurized module provided by Italy's Thales Alenia Space.
Frank Culbertson, the former NASA astronaut who now runs Orbital's Advanced Programs Group, said the company already has all the hardware it needs to put together an Antares-Cygnus stack for a December cargo run. Most of that is standing by at Wallops, with the exception of the Cygnus power module that would be used for that flight, and Antares' solid-fueled second stage.
All told, and excluding the stack to be launched Sept. 17, Orbital has in the United States three rockets worth of hardware standing by, and three Cygnus power modules in varying stages of assembly, Culbertson said. Thales Alenia is now working on the eighth Cygnus pressurized cargo module and has others in storage in Italy awaiting shipment. There is one pressurized cargo module standing by at Wallops, Culbertson said.
Meanwhile, Suffredini took time on the Sept. 4 conference call to highlight NASA's expectation that both of its cargo-delivery contractors establish reliable service in the near future.
"It's time for us really to start having flights on a regular basis," Suffredini said.
"I'm looking for this next year, 2014, to be the year when we fully settle in, wh ere we have regular Orbital flights and regular SpaceX flights and we actually see them, give or take, within a few weeks of when we expect to have them."
SpaceX and Orbital are under contract for cargo runs through 2016. NASA is expected to seek bids for a second round of commercial cargo delivery service late this year or early in 2014.

WASHINGTON — Orbital Sciences Corp. is planning to end its first cargo delivery mission to the international space station a little early, with the company's now-trash-filled Cygnus spacecraft set for destructive re-entry over the Pacific Ocean Oct. 23, a spokesman said.

"It used to be Oct. 24, but in looking at the orbital mechanics of release, the team updated their burn schedule and Oct. 24 became Oct. 23," Orbital spokesman Barron Beneski said in a phone interview Oct. 16.

Space station crew members will close Cygnus' hatch Oct. 21. Then, around 5 a.m. Eastern time the next day, the craft will separate from the station's Harmony node and maneuver away from the outpost to perform its deorbit burn.

Cygnus launched Sept. 18 from the state-run Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. The expendable cargo ship arrived at the station Sept. 29, a few days later than expected after a communications glitch and the arrival of new crew members aboard a Russian-launched Soyuz spacecraft forced Cygnus into a holding pattern.

The same day the first Cygnus plunges through the atmosphere in flames, the service module for the next Cygnus could be on its way from Orbital's Dulles, Va., headquarters to the company's horizontal integration facility at Wallops, Beneski said. There, it will be mated with its Italian-built pressurized cargo module in preparation for a mission that could launch aboard Orbital's Antares rocket as soon as December.

The capsule can be loaded with cargo only once NASA is sure that the initial Cygnus mission was successful, and gives Orbital formal approval to make the December cargo run — the first of eight the company owes NASA under a $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract signed in 2008. Orbital has already received some advance payments on this contract but cannot claim additional fees until after it completes each of the missions it is slated to carry out through 2016.

Meanwhile, whatever effect the government shutdown will have on other aspects of Orbital's business — Beneski said financial analysts are sure to ask about that on a quarterly conference call scheduled for Oct. 17 — the company's space station logistics work appears to have been disturbed only minimally, if at all.

Neither Orbital nor the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority got locked out of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport as a result of the shutdown, meaning that preparations for the tentative December launch continued while more than 95 percent of NASA's roughly 18,000 civil servants were on furlough.

"The first-stage core for this December Antares is at Wallops, the upper-stage rocket motor is there, the fairing is there, the two AJ-26 engines for the core are there," Beneski said. "We have all necessary major components of the Antares rocket onsite. The expectation is on our part that if we're ready to go in December and NASA is ready to receive us, we will go in December."

NASA Opens Media Accreditation for December Orbital Sciences Cargo Resupply Mission to International Space Station

Media accreditation is open for the launch of the first contracted cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station from Virginia.

Following successful demonstration flights of its Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft earlier this year, Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., will launch the Orbital-1 cargo resupply mission no earlier than Dec. 15 from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport's Pad-0A at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility along Virginia's east coast.

This will be the first of eight planned cargo resupply missions by Orbital Sciences for NASA under the agency's $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract, which ensures a robust national capability to deliver critical science research to orbit, significantly increasing NASA's ability to conduct new science investigations to the only laboratory in microgravity.

SAN FRANCISCO — Planet Labs, the San Francisco company planning to establish the world's largest Earth imaging constellation, announced Nov. 26 the successful launch of two satellites and shipment to Virginia of 28 additional spacecraft in preparation for their December launch.
On Nov. 21, Planet Labs sent triple cubesats Dove 3 and Dove 4 into polar orbit on a Dnepr rocket from Russia's Yasny launch site. "The launch was extremely successful," said William Marshall, Planet Labs co-founder and chief executive. "They went into precisely the orbit we wanted. We have also successfully made contact."

The latest additions to the Planet Labs fleet offer improvements in the capability provided by the firm's first satellites launched in April, Dove 1 and Dove 2, which also were triple cubesats measuring 10 centimeters by 10 centimeters by 30 centimeters.

Dove 3 and Dove 4 will demonstrate the firm's latest technology, including upgraded communications, attitude control and observation technology. "We like to iterate our satellite designs very rapidly," Marshall said. "It's the same compact form factor as Dove 1 and Dove 2, but we have stuck in more capability."

Dove 2 launched April 19 on a Soyuz-2.1a rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It rode into orbit as a secondary payload on the Bion-M1 biological experiment satellite. On April 21, Bion-M1 deployed the Dove 2 cubesat.

Dove 1 traveled April 21 on the maiden flight of Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket. Dove 1 re-entered Earth's atmosphere six days later. Dove 2 remains aloft.

Now, Planet Labs is preparing for the scheduled launch Dec. 15 of its operational Earth imaging constellation of 28 satellites, dubbed Flock 1, onboard Orbital's Antares rocket destined for the international space station. Planet Labs completed production of the cubesats and shipped them in November to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia for integration on the first of eight space station cargo transportation flights performed by Orbital's Antares rocket under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services program. 

After their launch in 2014, Planet Labs' Flock 1 cubesats are expected to occupy a 400-kilometer, circular orbit at an inclination of 52 degrees relative to the equator. 

By establishing a 28-satellite constellation, Planet Labs is seeking to provide Earth imagery at a higher resolution and with higher frequency than currently exists in the market. "This fleet will be acting a little bit like a line scanner for the Earth," Marshall said. "Every place on the Earth will be covered."
The Flock 1 constellation is designed to collect frequent imagery of latitudes within 52 degrees of the equator. Because Dove 3 and Dove 4 are in sun synchronous orbit, they will provide imagery of areas not observed by Flock 1, Planet Labs spokeswoman Tracy Nguyen said by email. 

The Flock 1 constellation is designed to provide imagery with a resolution of three to five meters, Marshall said. Company executives are eager to see the imagery used to support a wide array of environmental, humanitarian and business missions. 

"There is a great deal of interest from customers but we are not going to talk about any details of that at this time," Marshall said, citing the proprietary nature of many of those conversations. 
Planet Labs built the miniature satellites in its 740-square meter offices here, which house the firm's 35 full-time employees. In recent months, those offices also were home to Forest Stearns, an artist in residence who created a unique design for the cubesats.

"There is a panel on the side of the spacecraft that gets exposed when the solar arrays are unfurled," Marshall said. Stearns "put beautiful murals of flocking and herding birds, animals and fish on the side of the satellites. We take a lot of pride in our satellites. They are beautiful and we are trying to make them even more beautiful."

An Antares rocket carrying Orbital's Cygnus cargo logistics spacecraft is scheduled to lift-off from Pad-0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops Island, Virginia no earlier than December 17, 2013. Antares will boost Cygnus to a target orbit of 210 km by 298 km, from which Cygnus will use its on-board thrusters to raise its orbit to rendezvous and berth with the International Space Station (ISS). Berthing with the ISS is scheduled to occur on December 20, 2013. For this mission Cygnus will be carrying approximately 1459 kg (3,217 lbs.) of cargo to the ISS for NASA.

The Orb-1 mission is the first of eight commercial cargo resupply missions to the ISS under the NASA Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract, under which Orbital is slated to deliver up to 20,000 kg of supplies to the station.

Antares Mission Description

The two-stage Antares space launch vehicle utilizes a liquid-fueled first stage powered by two Aerojet Rocketdyne AJ26 engines and a solid motor ATK CASTOR 30B upper stage to boost Cygnus into orbit. The powered launch sequence will last about ten minutes from liftoff through the separation of Cygnus from the launch vehicle.

Cygnus Mission Description

After separation from Antares, Cygnus will deploy its solar arrays and undergo initial check-out. The spacecraft will conduct a series of thruster burns to raise its orbit to bring it within 4 km of the ISS prior to receiving authorization to autonomously rendezvous with the station. When the vehicle approaches to within 12 meters, the astronauts will use the station's robotic arm to grapple Cygnus and berth it to the Harmony node of the station. Cygnus is planned to remain berthed at the ISS for 42 days during which time the station crew will load Cygnus with materials for disposal. At the end of the mission Cygnus will depart the station and reenter the Earth's atmosphere.

Viewing the Launch

The Orb-1 launch will be broadcast on NASA TV and webcast on www.nasa.gov on launch day. In addition, NASA TV will provide live coverage of the rendezvous and berthing of Cygnus with the ISS.

Our Antares and Cygnus teams are in the advanced stages of preparation for the company's first operational resupply mission to the International Space Station under the Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract. The launch to the Station originating from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility is currently scheduled for Tuesday, December 17, at approximately 10:04 p.m.

Over the next 11 days, major operational events are scheduled to take place, beginning this weekend with the movement of the Antares rocket to the transporter/erector/launcher (TEL) and the mating of the Cygnus spacecraft with the Antares rocket that will carry it to orbit. Following the mating process, a series of tests to ensure all systems are properly working together will ensue, as will late- and final-loading of cargo, the encapsulation of Cygnus by the rocket's payload fairing, and finally, the roll-out and initial on-pad operations that are currently scheduled for December 15.

 The Antares team continued making progress over the weekend toward the launch of Orbital's first CRS resupply mission next week, however ongoing pre-launch testing took a bit longer than expected which resulted in shifting the targeted launch date by one day to December 18. In the next several days, the Antares rocket will be installed on the transporter/erector/launcher vehicle and the Cygnus spacecraft will be mated with the upper stage of the rocket. The launch window on December 18 is from 9:42 to 9:47 p.m.(EST). Additional updates will be posted in the days ahead.

То есть даже если предположить, что PlanetLabs'у удалось сделать кубсаты с САС 1 год (это вполне реально, такие примеры уже есть) - то все равно, для поддержания численности группировки им придется регулярно вбрасывать новые пачки спутников. Потому что "прошлогодних" уже не будет: сгорят.

Preparations for next week's launch continue at the Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF) on Wallops Island, Virginia. Yesterday, Antares was lifted onto the Transporter/Erector/Launcher (TEL). The TEL acts as a support structure as Antares is transported on the approximately 1 mile route fr om the HIF to Pad 0A. At the pad, hydraulic erection actuators rotate the TEL and the rocket to a vertical position, wh ere the TEL functions as Antares' umbilical support structure.Click on Images & Videos for more.

Later today the Cygnus cargo spacecraft will be mated to the rocket. The majority of the cargo for the International Space Station is already loaded onto Cygnus. This week additional "late load" cargo will be installed in Cygnus, the hatch will be closed, and the cargo module will be pressurized prior to encapsulation in the 9.9 meter Antares payload fairing. Roll-out of Antares to the launch pad is currently scheduled for December 16.

Overnight, our operations team mated the Cygnus spacecraft to the Antares rocket that will launch it to the International Space Station (see photo below). Later today they will conduct "Flight Sim 2" which will simulate the complete launch sequence to ensure that the integrated Antares and Cygnus systems perform as designed. Post-test data analysis will follow immediately and will likely continue into tomorrow.
Next up is adding so called "late load" cargo into Cygnus which includes, among others: 33 cubesats that will be deployed from the space station at a later date; student experiments studying such areas as enzyme activity in microgravity, DNA mutation rate, cell regeneration and oil bubble formation; and even an experiment comparing differences in group behavior of ants living in microgravity conditions versus those living on Earth. Cameras will record the ants living on the space station and software will analyze their movement patterns and interaction rates. Students in K-12 will be able to observe the space station ants in near-real-time and conduct their own classroom experiments.

Orbital's and Antares teams are continuing to make progress toward the launch of the company's first CRS mission known as Orb-1. Yesterday, following the mate of the Cygnus spacecraft, the team successfully completed Flight Simulation 2, during which the interaction between the Antares and Cygnus systems was verified to be operating as planned.
In the meantime, Orbital is awaiting word from NASA on whether there will be a schedule impact on the Orb-1 mission due to the cooling issue on the ISS that is now being investigated. We expect to receive direction from NASA on how to proceed no later than Monday, December 16.

Ранее представитель НАСА в российском Центре управления полетами (ЦУП) сообщил РИА Новости, что на американском сегменте Международной космической станции (МКС) возросло энергопотребление в связи с поломкой насоса системы терморегуляции, проблем с энергоснабжением на российском сегменте нет.

We are awaiting word from NASA about how the coolant issue on the space station may affect this mission. We currently plan to load the final cargo onto Cygnus tomorrow (December 14). If we get the go-ahead from NASA to do so, we will continue to target December 18 for launch and a December 21 rendezvous and berthing with the station. If cargo is loaded on Sunday the 15th, the first available launch attempt would be on the 19th, leading to a December 22 rendezvous and berthing with the station. At the latest, NASA is expected to provide direction on Monday the 16th as to how the ISS issue will affect our launch and rendezvous schedule.
In the meantime, the mission team plans to continue to add "late load" cargo into Cygnus today, perform tests and prepare for close-outs to the rocket over the weekend if the final cargo is loaded.

At NASA's direction, Orbital's Cygnus operations team deferred loading the mission's final cargo into the spacecraft earlier today, postponing that operation by a day. Orbital will await NASA's direction for the final cargo load tomorrow while the cooling loop issue aboard the ISS is being investigated. If we get the go-ahead to load the final, time sensitive cargo on Sunday, roll out to the launch pad would be on Tuesday, December 17, launch on December 19, and rendezvous and berthing with the ISS on December 22. The Cygnus team has been authorized to load the final cargo in the Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM ) today. This cargo is about 95kg of time-sensitive cargo consisting primarily of science payloads. We expect to finish loading the cargo later this afternoon, followed by about twelve hours of Cygnus closeouts including a purge of the air in the PCM, the final closing of the hatch, and leak checks. Installation of the Antares payload fairing is scheduled to occur on Monday.
Loading the final cargo today allows us to continue to target a launch on December 19. However, NASA is still assessing the thermal control issue on the space station, and a final determination to launch has not yet been made. If NASA gives us the go-ahead to proceed, rollout of Antares to the pad will take place early Tuesday morning.

Our operations team expects that they will erect the rocket to a vertical position by late morning. In parallel to the roll-out operation at Wallops, NASA is continuing to work on the cooling loop issue aboard the International Space Station. We do not yet have a "go/no go" decision for the launch on the 19th. The roll-out operation preserves that option for NASA in the event they are able to develop a plan that will allow the Cygnus spacecraft to rendezvous and berth with the ISS on December 22. Other launch and rendezvous/berthing date scenarios are also being considered. We expect NASA to provide additional guidance on the launch schedule either later today or tomorrow. Stand by for further updates.

Orb-1 Payloads

On the Orb-1 mission, Cygnus will be carrying a number of important science and technology payloads to the ISS. The following list illustrates some of the science payloads flying on Cygnus:
• NLP Vaccine-21 (Antibiotic Effectiveness in Space – 1) – Is aimed at using a spaceflight antibiotic effectiveness model to help address drug-resistance issues on Earth. Specifically, this study is designed to identify what phenotypic and transcriptomic changes permit bacterial survival under normally inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics.
• BCAT-KP (Binary Colloidal Alloy Test – Kinetics Platform) – Focuses on a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics that will enable formulation of commercial products with enhanced performance and stability.
• BASS-2 (Burning and Suppression of Solids 2) – Studies how the unique space environment affects a material's burning behavior, yielding results used in combustion models and predictions with implications to firefighting strategies in spacecraft and performance-based material selection.
• NanoRacks Module 9 S/N 1008, 1010, & 1011 – Consist of suites of student spaceflight experiments in areas such as enzyme activity in microgravity, DNA mutation rate, cell regeneration, and oil bubble formation.
• NanoRacks Module 38 (NanoRacks Mission Discovery ISS Biomedical Experiments) – Examines petri dish growth utilizing the NanoRacks Microscopes Facility.
• Commercial Generic Bioprocessing Apparatus Science Insert – 06: Ants in Space (CSI-06) compares behavior differences in groups of ants living in normal gravity and microgravity conditions. It measures how the interactions among ants in a group depend on the number of ants in a given area.
• Story Time from Space – Consists of crewmembers videotaping themselves reading children's books, and completing simple demonstrations that accompany the science, technology, engineering, and math concepts in the books.

In addition to these scientific payloads, the following technology payloads are included on Orb-1:
• SPHERES-Slosh (Synchronized Position, Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites – Slosh) – Uses small robotic satellites on the ISS to examine how liquids move inside containers in microgravity.
• NanoRacks CubeSat Deployers (NRCSDs) & CubeSats – Involves economical small satellite launching platforms and multiple CubeSat-based investigations (Dove (28 ) , ArduSat-2, LituanicaSat-1, SkyCube, UAPSat-1, and LitSat-1).
• NanoRacks Module 39 (NanoRacks ArduLab-1) – Is a technical demonstration of the ArduLab microcontroller board system for use with the NanoRacks modular experiment system.

 It should be noted that the 33 CubeSats will be transported to the ISS for deployment from the NanoRacks CubeSat Deployers. Among the CubeSats are 28 Dove Nanosatellites.

At NASA's direction we have postponed the launch of our commercial cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station that was scheduled to occur on December 19, 2013 while the space agency proceeds with a series of spacewalks to replace a faulty pump module on the space station. The Antares rocket that is currently on the launch pad at Wallops Island, Virginia will be returned to a horizontal position and transported back to the Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF). At the HIF, the Antares payload fairing will be removed to allow the Cygnus team to open the payload module hatch and remove time-critical payloads for safekeeping until the next launch attempt, which will occur no earlier than mid-January.

NASA and Orbital have established a new "no earlier than" (NET) launch date of Tuesday, Jan. 7, for the Orbital-1 CRS cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in eastern Virginia. A launch on Jan. 7 within the targeted window of 1:55 to 2:00 p.m. EST would result in a grapple and berthing at the space station in the early morning hours of Jan. 10. The launch date will continue to be evaluated as NASA proceeds with three upcoming spacewalks by the Expedition 38 crew to replace a cooling pump aboard the orbiting complex.
Following the postponement of the originally targeted Dec. 19 launch, Orbital's Antares team rolled the rocket off the launch pad and back to the Horizontal Integration Facility yesterday at Wallops. The time sensitive payloads that were on Cygnus are being removed today. They will be "refreshed" by the payload provider and returned for reloading into Cygnus. That operation would take place on Jan. 3. Rollout to the launch pad would occur on Jan. 4 to meet a Jan. 7 launch.
A conflict with a previously scheduled operation on the Wallops range has been resolved to allow the Antares launch to be proceed earlier than was originally thought possible after the decision was made to postpone the Dec. 19 launch attempt.

Orbital, in consultation with NASA, has decided to reschedule the Antares CRS Orb-1 Space Station Resupply Mission launch for no earlier than Wednesday, January 8, 2014. The new target date was set due to the extreme cold temperatures that are forecasted for early next week, coupled with likely precipitation events predicted for Sunday night and Monday morning. While we are preserving the option to launch on January 8, it is more likely that the launch will take place on Thursday, January 9 because of a much improved weather forecast for later in the week.

The launch window on Wednesday is 1:32 - 1:37 pm EST (18:32 - 18:37 GMT). If weather conditions on Wednesday do not prove favorable, the launch window for Thursday, January 9 is 1:10 - 1:15 pm EST (18:10 - 18:15 GMT).

Rollout of the rocket to the pad will occur as previously scheduled tomorrow night, January 4, due to the relatively favorable weather, and the fact that the cargo has already been loaded onto the Cygnus. The team will execute on-pad preparations (mating the rocket to the pad, rotating the rocket to its vertical position, connecting umbilicals, etc.) immediately after rollout.

The Launch Readiness Review is currently scheduled to take place on Monday January 6. If the launch occurs on either Wednesday, January 8 or Thursday, January 9, Cygnus rendezvous and berthing with the space station will occur early in the morning of Sunday, January 12.

Antares was rolled out of the Horizontal Integration Facility last night at 4:30pm EST and the rocket was vertical on the pad by 10:40 pm last night with all systems functioning properly. Today the team will connect the commodity lines and perform a series of checkouts and system tests.
The launch Readiness Review is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 7 at 10:00 am, with a targeted launch at 1:32 pm EST on Wednesday, January 8.

Не исключено, что новое время придется изменить из-за погодных условий. Как заверяют в компании Orbital Sciences, построившей и Cygnus, и Antares, ракета-носитель способна стартовать при температуре в минус 6 градусов. Сейчас в районе космодрома на острове Уоллопс термометр показывает минус 7 градусов, но к середине дня в среду температура должна подняться примерно до нуля.

Если все пойдет по плану, то он пристыкуется к борту МКС 12 января ранним утром по времени Восточного побережья США.

Как ожидается, "грузовик" доставит на МКС свыше 1,3 тонны различных грузов, жизненно важных для обеспечения станции. В частности, это продовольствие, вода, запчасти, оборудование для научных исследований. Как отметили в пресс- службе НАСА, "в том числе на борт будут доставлены материалы для проведения 23 экспериментов, в реализации которых участвуют более 10 тысяч школьников и студентов".

Корабль был запущен 9 января с космодрома на острове Уоллопс на восточном побережье США с помощью ракеты "Антарес", также созданной Orbital Sciences. Два двигателя первой ступени этой ракеты — российские НК-33, разработанные для лунной ракеты Н-1. В воскресенье астронавты Майк Хопкинс и Коичи Ваката захватили корабль манипулятором Canadarm, и в 17.05 мск пристыковали его к стыковочному узлу на американском модуле Harmony.

"Грузовой люк Cygnus открыт, внутри все выглядит хорошо", — говорится в сообщении в официальном твиттер-аккаунте Orbital Sciences. Как ожидается, корабль пробудет "в гостях" у МКС до февраля.

Это уже второй визит на МКС грузового корабля Cygnus. Первый полет грузовика — демонстрационный — состоялся в сентябре 2013 года. Нынешний полет — первый "плановый" рейс из восьми, предусмотренных контрактом Orbital и НАСА, заключенным в 2008 году.

Cygnus привез на МКС 1,46 тонны груза: научно-исследовательское оборудование, продукты и одежду для экипажа, инструменты для работы в открытом космосе и компьютерные комплектующие. Кроме того, грузовик доставил на станцию 33 малых спутника стандарта CubeSat, которые планируется запустить с МКС в этом году с помощью японского робота-манипулятора.

На борту корабля на станцию прибыли и "пассажиры": муравьи-участники эксперимента, подготовленного американским медицинским колледжем Бейлора при участии ряда университетов и НАСА. Этот эксперимент по изучению поведения насекомых в невесомости стал продолжением серии экспериментов, в рамках которых на космической станции побывали бабочки, пауки и растения.

Корабль Cygnus, разработанный Orbital Sciences, стал вторым в истории частным космическим грузовиком после корабля Dragon, созданного компанией SpaceX.

Как сообщило NASA, операция начнется в 5:40 утра по времени восточного побережья США (14:40 мск) и продлится примерно 1 час 10 минут.

Проводить ее будут американский астронавт Майкл Хопкинс и его японский коллега Коити Ваката, которые месяц назад обеспечили успешное рандеву космического грузовика с орбитальным комплексом. С помощью 17-метровой автоматической руки-манипулятора Canadarm, изготовленной космическим агентством Канады, они захватят Cygnus, отсоединят его от стыковочного отсека на американском модуле Harmony и отведут примерно на 10 метров от станции. После этого корабль отправится в свободное плавание, постепенно удаляясь от МКС.

На следующий день по команде из центра управления полетами на нем будут включены двигатели, и он возьмет курс в направлении Земли. Cygnus является одноразовым кораблем и сгорит при прохождении через плотные слои атмосферы планеты в районе над Тихим океаном. Перед расставанием со станцией он был загружен накопившимся там мусором.

Cygnus отправился к МКС 9 января с помощью ракеты-носителя Antares с космодрома NASA на острове Уоллопс (штат Вирджиния), расположенном у Атлантического побережья США. Первоначально его запуск был намечен на 19 декабря 2013 года, но был перенесен из-за неполадок в системе охлаждения на американском сегменте станции, устранение которых потребовало выхода астронавтов в открытый космос. Когда эти проблемы были решены, старт назначили на 7 января, но в последний момент вновь отложили из-за сильной магнитной бури, угрожавшей сбоями в работе электрооборудования ракеты.

Космический грузовик, который, как и его носитель, создан частной американской компанией Orbital Sciences, привез участникам 38-й экспедиции на МКС почти полторы тонны различных грузов, в том числе продовольствие, воду, запчасти, оборудование и материалы для научных экспериментов. Кроме того, он доставил на станцию подарки и поздравления к Рождеству и Новому году. Из-за переноса запуска они прибыли туда с опозданием, но все равно члены экипажа были им рады. На борту МКС вместе с двумя американцами и японцем сейчас работают российские космонавты Олег Котов, Сергей Рязанский и Михаил Тюрин.

Пять месяцев назад Cygnus успешно совершил первый пробный полет к орбитальному комплексу. В соответствии с соглашением между NASA и Orbital Sciences в ближайшие три года состоятся еще семь рейсов таких кораблей к МКС. Они доставят на станцию в общей сложности более 10 тонн грузов. Контракт оценивается в 1,9 млрд долларов.

Отстыковавшись от МКС, Cygnus освободит место для прибытия другого американского грузовика - Dragon, построенного частной калифорнийской компанией SpaceX. Dragon является единственным в мире грузовым кораблем многоразового использования и выводится на орбиту с помощью ракеты Falcon 9. В 2012-13 годах он уже дважды совершал стыковку с МКС и по контракту в 1,6 млрд долларов должен отправиться к ней еще 10 раз. Его следующий полет запланирован на 16 марта.

This first burn of the BT-4 engine of Cygnus is expected to begin at 13:12 UTC on Wednesday and has a planned duration of 691 seconds to slow the spacecraft down by 70.5 meters per second.

The deorbit burn occurs at 17:46 UTC and has a duration of 369 seconds to further slows the spacecraft down in order to lower the perigee to have the spacecraft dip into the atmosphere to start re-entry. This burn is targeted so that re-entry takes place above the Pacific Ocean starting at 18:20 UTC. When hitting the dense atmosphere, Cygnus will break-up and burn up with loaded trash to put a fiery end to its mission.

Orbital's Cygnus spacecraft is in the final leg of its ORB-1/CRS-1 mission, following its departure from the International Space Station (ISS) at 11:41 am UTC on Tuesday. The commercial vehicle was removed from its  Earth-facing port of the Harmony module port and then released, ahead of what will be a destructive re-entry to end its mission.

The first Commercial Resupply Mission for the Cygnus has been extremely successful.
   
A flawless launch atop of the Antares launch vehicle on January 9 was followed by a trouble-free rendezvous and berthing just a few days later.

ORB-1 delivered 1,466 kilograms (3,232 lb), out of a maximum of 2,000 kg (4,400 lb).
