While ESA's second Automated Transfer Vehicle, Johannes Kepler, is undergoing final launch preparations, its successor, ATV Edoardo Amaldi, is shaping up in Bremen. The launch of Europe's third space ferry is planned for February 2012.
 
The three main parts of ATV-3 arrived at the premises of EADS Astrium in Bremen, Germany, in December. The vehicle is now waiting to be assembled at the end of January.

The Integrated Cargo Carrier, built by Thales Alenia Space Italy, was transported by a voluminous Beluga aircraft from Turin airport just before Christmas.

This module represents about 60% of the total ATV volume and will hold all the liquid and dry cargo, totalling up to 7.5 tonnes.  
 
Europe-wide engineering expertise
 
The Equipped Propulsion Bay, containing the rocket engines and propellant tanks, was built on site in Bremen. The Equipped Avionics Bay – ATV's 'brain' – was delivered from Toulouse, France, after thermal vacuum testing.

As the computers in the avionics bay generate a lot of heat, the thermal control system of this section is particularly sophisticated – and vital for ATV's success.

ATV-3's Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC)

These two modules will be combined at the end of the month into their final configuration for launch. Later in the spring, the cargo carrier will be electrically connected with them for final testing.

ATV-3 will be shipped to the launch site, Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in September for dispatch to the ISS in February 2012.

The newest ATV, named after a leading figure in Italian space science last century, will be the first to be processed and launched within the target cadence of one ATV per year.

Construction of the following ATVs is also on schedule to keep up the tempo.

"The main challenges of Edoardo Amaldi will be not only to perform its very complex mission as successfully as its predecessors, but also to prepare it within a much shorter interval since the previous one," says Massimo Cislaghi, ESA's ATV-3 Mission Manager.

"This implies, for instance, that any technical information from the Johannes Kepler mission will become available only when the Edoardo Amaldi preparations are already at a very advanced stage."
 
So far, the only differences between the two spacecraft are the name and the cargo manifest.

The launch by the end of February 2012 will be, "vital for space station logistics, especially at a time when the operational life of the US Space Shuttle will have come to an end, and its replacement might not yet be ready," comments Massimo.

After being happily mated in Bremen for system integration and testing, the parts will then be separated. Their next destination is French Guiana, where all the pieces will be reassembled and tested again before the vessel's voyage into space.

BREMEN, Germany -- Fulfilling its final duty as a trash hauler, the European Space Agency's second Automated Transfer Vehicle made a suicidal plunge into the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday with 2,600 pounds of garbage from the International Space Station.
 
Meanwhile, German engineers are preparing Europe's third robotic cargo freighter for another resupply mission in early 2012.

The 32-foot-long ship, named Johannes Kepler for the German astronomer and mathematician, undocked from the space station Monday and fired its engines twice Tuesday to lower its orbit and drop back into the atmosphere.

The ATV was not equipped with a heat shield, so engineers expected the craft to tumble and burn up when it encountered the scorching temperatures of re-entry.

Engineers at the ATV control center in Toulouse, France, lost radio contact with the spacecraft at 2041 GMT (4:41 p.m. EDT) as the ship descended at an altitude of about 50 miles, according to the European Space Agency.

Debris from the ATV, including its main engines and docking adapter, should have impacted the remote Pacific Ocean around 2100 GMT (5 p.m. EDT), ESA officials said.

Controllers expected the hardiest components to strike the ocean at about 43.05 degrees south latitude and 147.02 degrees west longitude. The remote strech of the Pacific Ocean is about 1,500 miles east of New Zealand and 3,700 miles west of Chile.

A small hardened data recorder was inside the spacecraft to capture information on the environment the ATV experience during its fiery demise. Provided by the Aerospace Corp., the recorder was designed to transmit data back to engineers via an Iridium satellite before impacting the ocean.

The ATV launched Feb. 16 and reached the space station Feb. 24.

The Johannes Kepler mission delivered about 3,500 pounds of dry cargo in its pressurized cabin. Astronauts manually unloaded that equipment during the craft's stay.

The spacecraft also carried refueling propellant and oxygen to replenish the station's tanks.

The ATV's last duty before leaving the space station was boosting the lab's orbit by 35 kilometers, or about 22 miles. The spacecraft fired its thrusters over three days between June 12 and June 17 to raise the station's orbit.

The complex is now circling the planet at an average altitude of 237 miles, higher than the space station has ever flown before. The reboosts were conceived to place the lab higher above the drag effects of Earth's atmosphere, increasing the station's fuel efficiency over the next decade.

"The mission of ATV-2 has been very smooth and we have encountered during these four months only very minor issues that were quickly taken care of by our teams," said Nico Dettmann, head of ESA's ATV program.

Attention now turns to the third ATV mission christened Edoardo Amaldi after an accomplished Italian physicist.

"ATV has shown again its capabilities in servicing the station and we are looking forward to the next, Edoardo Amaldi, which will be shipped to Kourou in August for launch in early 2012."

"It will be shipped at the beginning of August," said Wolfgang Paetsch, head of the ATV program at EADS Astrium. "So in the next few weeks, we have quite a lot to do, but we're on track. We're very optimistic we will make it, and we are well-observed by a lot of people. And we think we can deliver in time and with good quality as we did for ATV 2."

Unlike most satellites, the cargo freighters do not go through extensive shake and thermal testing to ensure they will survive the flight. Some individual components and systems go through such testing, but engineers are confident the ATV spacecraft is qualified to fly in space.

Both ATV missions thus far have performed with almost no faults.

The Edoardo Amaldi mission will carry more supplies than its predecessors in the ship's pressurized integrated cargo carrier module. It will also ferry oxygen, water and refueling propellant to the space station.

Engineers conduct the systems testing at the German factory with the spacecraft in a "soft-mate" configuration, in which the ATV's cargo module is wired to the vehicle's propulsion and service module with cables and plumbing. That's enough to complete the necessary testing, and the ATV's central components won't be physically attached until they are at the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana.

Once the testing is finished, workers will load the ATV on a ship to sail to the mission's South America launch site. Liftoff is scheduled for February.

Pieces of the fourth and fifth ATV cargo freighters are already at the Astrium facility to begin assembly for launches in 2013 and 2014.

"We're now at the peak of production," Paetsch said. "The center of gravity for ATV is now in Bremen, Germany."

The ATV resupply flights are ESA's contribution to help pay for the agency's share of the space station operating costs.

As one European cargo ship ended its mission Tuesday, production teams in Germany are testing the next Automated Transfer Vehicle before shipping it to the launch site in August.

Liftoff of the third ATV, dubbed Edoardo Amaldi after an Italian physicist, is scheduled for February 2012 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket. It will deliver supplies, propellant, oxygen and water to the International Space Station.

Spaceflight Now visited the EADS Astrium factory in mid-June to observe the final assembly and testing of the ATV cargo ship and the Ariane 5 upper stage that will propel it into orbit. The facility is located in Bremen, Germany.

Bremen, 11 August 2011 – "Edoardo Amaldi", the third European cargo spacecraft for the International Space Station (ISS), is on its way to the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) has undergone extensive system testing at Astrium's Bremen site over the last few months and has now been given the go-ahead for the final stage prior to the cargo spacecraft's flight to the ISS.

"Edoardo Amaldi" is slated for launch in the spring of 2012. On behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA), Astrium is responsible for both development and production of the ATV. The production of ATV units two to five – as well as mission preparation and operations support – is covered by the "Exploitation" contract, which governs the operation and provisioning of the European components of the ISS. Astrium is responsible for carrying out these activities on ESA's behalf.

"Edoardo Amaldi" is the second production unit, following on from the highly successful first flight model "Jules Verne" and the first production unit "Johannes Kepler". Astrium has orders for a total of four ATV production units from ESA – a testimony to the high reliability Astrium has shown as ESA's prime contractor for the development of ATV and also of Columbus.

"The extension of the ISS mission until 2020 presents Astrium with further opportunities in regard to both the supply and the operation of the ISS," explained Dr. Michael Menking, Astrium's Senior Vice President of Orbital Systems and Exploration, speaking as the ATV set off from Bremen on Thursday. He also confirmed that production of the ATV units is currently running according to schedule: "Edoardo Amaldi" is on its way to Kourou, and ATV 4 "Albert Einstein" has reached the integration stage in Bremen. Menking added that delivery of the first batch of structures for ATV 5 is imminent, which will enable integration work to begin soon.

ATV must comply with the safety requirements for human spaceflight. Thus ATV's digital and electronic architecture features double and triple redundancies. A fault-tolerant computer – consisting of three computer modules – ensures the reliable and smooth execution of the ATV mission.

"With the retirement of the US Space Shuttle, ATV is the largest vehicle supplying the ISS. Considering its technological challenges, like automatic rendezvous and docking, ATV is the most sophisticated space vehicle ever built in Europe," said Menking.

 "Edoardo Amaldi" will be shipped to the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, in three special containers, accompanied by some 45 sea containers taking care of test equipment. At Kourou's spaceport, final assembly will be performed on the spacecraft, Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC), solar panels and the Separation and Distancing Module (SDM), which forms the interface between ATV and the Ariane 5 launcher. The ATV will then be subjected to further extensive tests on site before being fuelled, loaded and integrated as a payload on an Ariane 5. "According to our schedule planning, we will be ready for launch for this third mission to the ISS in the spring of 2012," Menking added. The other ATVs are being produced at a rate of one per year.

ATV is Europe's contribution to supplying the ISS. On a typical mission, ATV carries water, gases, fuel, food and scientific equipment to the ISS. Once its mission is over, ATV is loaded with waste, undocked from the ISS and burns up during a controlled re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. ATV is also responsible for regularly boosting the ISS to its operational orbit of around 400 km, performing attitude control for the ISS, and carrying out manoeuvres to avoid collisions with space debris.

Weighing in at 20 metric tons, ATV has a maximum net cargo capacity of up to 7 metric tons. The composition of this payload can vary depending on the mission: 1.5 to 5.5 metric tons of freight and supplies (food, research instruments, tools, etc.), up to 840 kilograms of drinking water, up to 100 kilograms of gases (air, oxygen and nitrogen), up to 4.6 metric tons of fuel for orbit correction and attitude control, and up to 860 kilograms of propellant to refuel the space station.[/size]

Запуск третьего европейского космического грузового корабля ATV-3 к Международной космической станции (МКС) запланирован на 7 марта 2012 года, его стыковка с МКС назначена на 19 марта, сообщил РИА Новости глава представительства Европейского космического агентства (ЕКА) в Москве Рене Пишель.

"Готовится к запуску третий ATV-3, имеющий, как и предыдущие корабли, собственное имя - "Эдуардо Амальди". Запуск запланирован на 7 марта 2012 года, а стыковка с МКС - 19 марта", - сказал Пишель.

ATV представляет собой автономный космический корабль разработки ЕКА, используемый для доставки грузов на МКС и коррекции орбиты ее полета. Каждый ATV способен доставить 7,7 тонны груза и топлива. По окончании миссии корабль, нагруженный отходами, отстыковывается от станции и сгорает во время управляемого входа в атмосферу земли.

Первый европейский космический грузовик "Жюль Верн" был запущен в 2008 году. Второй ATV - "Иоган Теплер" был запущен в феврале 2011 года. Всего до 2015 года планируется запустить еще три подобных корабля, одним из которых станет "Эдуардо Амальди".

Кроме того, в рамках европейской программы "подготовительные работы по транспортным системам и пилотируемым исследованиям" ЕКА рассматривает концепцию перспективного возвращаемого корабля (ARV), разрабатываемого на основе существующего грузовика ATV.[/size]

В среду на этой неделе до Международной космической станции из-за неполадок ракеты-носителя не смог долететь российский грузовик "Прогресс М-12М". Вместе с тем, российские и американские специалисты заверяют, что экипаж станции в достаточной степени обеспечен запасами воды и пищи.

Европейский "Амальди" сможет доставить на МКС около 2 тонн сухих грузов, 285 килограммов воды и более 3 тонн топлива.

Корабль, названный в честь итальянского физика-исследователя космических лучей Эдоардо Амальди (Edoardo Amaldi) 6 августа отправился в путь в Южную Америку из германского порта Бремерхафен на борту судна "Тукан" в трех герметичных контейнерах, и через три недели прибыл к месту старта.

После "отставки" американских шаттлов европейские грузовые корабли стали самым грузоподъемным средством доставки на МКС всего необходимого - "Прогрессы" могут доставлять на орбиту около 2,5 тонны груза.

Первый ATV получил название "Жюль Верн" (Jules Verne). В 2008 году он совершил демонстрационный полет на МКС и доставил на станцию груз массой 4,5 тонны. Второй "еврогрузовик" ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер" прибыл к МКС в феврале 2011 года и оставался пристыкованным к станции до конца июня.

Европейское космическое агентство планирует в ближайшие четыре года запускать к МКС по одному кораблю в год.

Arianespace's role in supporting the International Space Station's continuing operations was underscored with the arrival of Europe's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) resupply vessel in French Guiana, which is to be launched next year by an Ariane 5 for servicing of the crewed facility in Earth orbit.

The ATV Edoardo Amaldi – named after the Italian cosmic ray physicist who was a founding father of European space research – is now at the Spaceport after arriving yesterday in French Guiana aboard the MN Toucan.  This roll-on/roll-off seagoing vessel is one of two used by Arianespace to transport launch vehicle components from Europe to South America, and the ships also are made available for exceptional loads such as the ATV.

For its three-week voyage from Germany's North Sea harbor of Bremerhaven, the ATV Edoardo Amaldi was shipped in three sections that were protected by hermetically-sealed containers, accompanied by some 45 other containers with test and checkout equipment for the spacecraft's preparation at the Spaceport.

This will be the third ATV launched by Arianespace, following its orbiting of the ATV Johannes Kepler last January, and ATV Jules Verne in March 2008.

With the retirement of the U.S. Space Shuttle fleet, Europe's ATV is the largest vehicle supplying the International Space Station, and is among the heaviest payloads orbited by Ariane 5 – weighing in at some 20 metric tons for liftoff.  Pre-launch preparations at the Spaceport are performed to strict safety and cleanliness standards of a manned spacecraft, as the vehicle becomes part of the International Space Station while docked to the orbital facility.

The ATVs typically carry water, gases, fuel, food and scientific equipment to the International Space Station.  While docked to the facility for up to six months, the ATVs are used as well to regularly boost the station back up to its operational orbit of approximately 400 km., while also performing attitude control duties, and carrying out maneuvers to avoid collisions with space debris.  Once their missions are completed, the ATVs are loaded with waste and undocked for a controlled re-entry and burn-up in the Earth's atmosphere.

Current planning calls for the ATV Edoardo Amaldi to be launched in the spring of 2012, carrying about two metric tons of dry cargo, 285 kg. of water and more than three tons of propellant.

The ATV program is performed under management of the European Space Agency, and is part of Europe's contribution to International Space Station's creation and operation.  Production of the resupply spacecraft involves a European industry team led by prime contractor EADS Astrium.

The preparation campaign for Europe's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) has begun in French Guiana as this large cargo resupply spacecraft is readied for a spring 2012 Ariane 5 launch by Arianespace to service the International Space Station.

During activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility, the ATV's two main components – its Integrated Cargo Carrier and the Service Module – are undergoing initial checkout, starting a 180-day launch campaign.

Both elements are in the S5 facility's large S5C hall, having been unloaded from the shipping containers that protected them during the multi-week sea voyage from Europe to South America.  S5C is the largest of the S5 building's preparation halls, and has 700 sq. meters of clean room facilities for major payloads such as the ATV.  It also includes adjacent dedicated office areas for the technical teams performing payload checkout duties.

The ATV arrived in French Guiana last week aboard the MN Toucan – one of two roll-on/roll-off seagoing vessels used by Arianespace to transport launch vehicle components from Europe to South America, and which also are made available for exceptional loads such as the ATV.

Named after Italian cosmic ray physicist Edoardo Amaldi, this latest ATV will carry about two metric tons of dry cargo, 285 kg. of water and more than three tons of propellants, based on current planning.

Об этом корр.АРМС-ТАСС сообщили в компании "Арианспейс", которая будет осуществлять запуск ATV на орбиту с помощью тяжелой ракеты-носителя "Ариан-5".

В корпусе подготовки полезной нагрузки Гвианского космического центра S5 два основных компонента корабля ATV - отсек полезной нагрузки и служебный модуль пройдут первоначальную проверку. Этой проверкой будет начато выполнение комплексной программы подготовки корабля ATV.

Оба компонента находятся в корпусе S5 после выгрузки из транспортных контейнеров, в которых они находились во время многонедельной перевозки по морю из Европы в Южную Америку. Корпус S5 имеет чистые помещения площадью 700 кв.м для подготовки основных ПН типа ATV. К этим зонам примыкают офисные помещения для технических служб, проводящих проверку ПН.

Arianespace's full launcher family is now an operational reality as flight-ready versions of all three vehicles – Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega – are together at the Spaceport for the first time, positioning them for upcoming missions with payloads that range from compact scientific and educational spacecraft to a large resupply vessel for the International Space Station.

The most recent arrivals in French Guiana are a heavy-lift Ariane 5 and the initial lightweight Vega – both of which were delivered this week to the Spaceport by the MN Colibri roll-on/roll-off ship after a trans-Atlantic voyage from Europe.  They join a medium-lift Soyuz launcher that was transported from Russia aboard the MN Colibri earlier this year.

The Ariane 5 will be assembled for an early 2012 liftoff from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone with Europe's latest Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), which is the third entrusted to Arianespace for orbiting.

This ATV, named after Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi, will be loaded with dry cargo, water and propellants for a rendezvous with the space station in low-Earth orbit.  It will be launched on a mission designated VA205 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering, signifying the 205th flight of a vehicle in the Ariane series.

During activity in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, the Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage was removed from its protective shipping container and raised into position over one of two operational mobile launch tables.

This cleared the way for rollout of the two solid propellant boosters, which will be mated to the core stage.  It is to be followed by integration of the EPS storable propellant upper stage and vehicle equipment bay, completing the basic assembly for the Ariane 5 ES version used on missions with Automated Transfer Vehicles.

The upcoming flight will continue Arianespace's support of International Space Station servicing, orbiting ATVs that support operation of the crewed orbital facility.  Named after Italian cosmic ray physicist Edoardo Amaldi, this latest Automated Transfer Vehicle will carry dry cargo, water and propellant.

The previous Ariane 5 missions with ATVs were launched by Arianespace in February of this year and in March 2008.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 was "topped off" this week with its vehicle equipment bay and EPS storable propellant upper stage, which were installed atop the core cryogenic stage that previously had been joined with the launcher's two solid propellant boosters.

Ariane 5's EPS upper stage is designed to be reignited during flight – a capability required in the mission profile to loft the ATV for its low Earth orbit rendezvous with the International Space Station.

Once the built-up Ariane 5 has finished the current phase of validation tests in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, it will be moved to the Final Assembly Building and delivered to Arianespace for installation of the ATV and the final operations leading to launch.

Cargo loading is underway in French Guiana for the no. 3 Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), which is being readied for a 2012 launch from the Spaceport on Arianespace's next Ariane 5 servicing mission to the International Space Station.

This ATV will carry an estimated 6,960 kg. of dry cargo, propellant, water and gas, with transfer operations to the spacecraft's Integrated Cargo Carrier section now occurring inside the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation building.

The actual cargo mix of each ATV is defined according to the International Space Station's needs prior to a launch of the resupply vessel to the crewed orbital facility.

For the no. 3 ATV – which is named after Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi – the payload will consist of 2,900 kg. of propellant for its own propulsion system, 860 kg. of Russian propellant for the International Space Station's engines, 285 kg. of Russian-supplied water, 102 kg. of gas (consisting of air, oxygen and/or nitrogen), and 2,450 kg. of dry cargo (composed of such items as food, clothing and spare parts).

The dry cargo is contained in special bags that are positioned on racks inside the ATV's Integrated Cargo Carrier, with the locations calculated based on their contents and considerations for the resupply spacecraft's center-of-mass determination.

Loading of the cargo is performed in clean-room conditions that meet standards for manned spaceflight, as the ATV becomes an integral part of the International Space Station while docked to the platform in Earth orbit.

Prior to the ATV's Ariane 5 launch by Arianespace in March 2012, its Integrated Cargo Carrier will be mated with the Service Module in French Guiana to form the complete vehicle.  The ATV's unpressurized Service Module contains propulsion systems, electrical power, computers, communications and a majority of the vessel's avionics.

The ATV is an important element of Europe's contribution to the International Space Station's operation, with program management performed by the European Space Agency.   Its series of resupply spacecraft is produced in a multi-national team led by the Astrium business unit of EADS, which also is the industrial prime contractor for Ariane 5.

ЕКА прекращает производство грузовых кораблей ATV после 2014 года

Два первых корабля ATV были запущены в 2008 и в 2011 годах.

"Третий ATV будет запущен 9 марта следующего года. Вчера я принял решение начать заправку ATV. Это подтверждает, что все идет по графику. Четвертый будет запущен в марте 2013 года. И пятый - в марте 2014 года. Запуск этих пяти аппаратов покрывает обязательства ЕКА до 2017 года", - сказал Дорден.

"Таким образом, с помощью постройки и запуска этих пяти ATV мы покрываем свои обязательства заранее. В любом случае, мы приняли решение прекратить производство ATV после производства пятого аппарата. Что касается покрытия наших обязательств по МКС (Международной космической станции) после 2017 года, мы приняли решение производить другие корабли", - сообщил глава ЕКА.

По его словам, европейские специалисты сейчас обсуждают с представителями НАСА, какие именно корабли нужно будет разрабатывать для покрытия периода с 2018 по 2020 годы.

Отвечая на вопрос, будет ли создаваться грузовозвращаемая версия корабля ATV, Дорден сообщил, что работа над этим ведется, но проектировать такой корабль еще не начали.

Первый ATV получил название "Жюль Верн" (Jules Verne). В 2008 году он совершил демонстрационный полет на МКС и доставил на станцию груз массой 4,5 тонны. Второй "еврогрузовик" ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер" прибыл к МКС в феврале 2011 года и оставался пристыкованным к станции до конца июня.

Fueling is underway for Europe's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) at the Spaceport in French Guiana, which will be launched by Arianespace in March aboard an Ariane 5 on an International Space Station servicing mission.

This process is being performed in the S5B hall of the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility, where the large cargo vessel was integrated and received its cargo.

Named after Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi, the ATV will carry a fuel load estimated at 6,060 kg.  Of this total, approximately 2,200 kg. is for use on the spacecraft's travel to the International Space Station after launch by Ariane 5, and for the post-mission de-orbiting; some 3,000 kg. will be consumed in attitude control and re-boost maneuvers while the ATV is mated to the International Space Station; and the remaining 860 kg. is destined for transfer from the ATV to the station's Russian portion.

Liftoff of the ATV Edoardo Amaldi is scheduled for March 9 from the Spaceport, carrying some 6,960 kg. of dry cargo, water, gas and propellant for delivery to the International Space Station.

Arianespace's mission will follow Ariane 5 launches of ATVs in February 2011 and March 2008.  The ATV program is managed by the European Space Agency, with production of the spacecraft performed by an Astrium-led industry consortium.  

In separate activity, the cargo module for Europe's fourth ATV, named after Albert Einstein, was transferred from its production location in Turin, Italy to Bremen, Germany on December 30 for final testing.  Shipment of the full ATV – consisting of the cargo section and service module – to French Guiana is expected in the second half of this year, for a launch on Ariane 5 targeted for early 2013.

Perhaps the most valuable cargo on ATV-3 is the Fluids Control Pump Assembly (FCPA). This is a critical piece of the system that recycles urine into drinkable water, and that could affect the ISS life support systems.

Right now, there is an FCPA in use but no spare available on the ISS. If it breaks down, the astronauts would still have enough water for some time, but the Station wouldn't work at full efficiency.

NASA decided to send a replacement as soon as possible and alerted the ATV-3 cargo planners to reserve a space for the water processing unit. There was one caveat: the machine would not be ready for loading until shortly before launch, raising the critical question: Would it even be possible to load it last-minute?

Usually all cargo is loaded on the ATV from the 'back' of the Integrate Cargo Carrier (ICC) – before the systems and propulsion module is attached.

Once ATV has been assembled the only way to access the cargo space is through the (small) main hatch, the same one used by astronauts on the ISS. Normally cargo loaded this way is restricted to a standard Double-sized Cargo Transfer Bag (CTB), measuring 49 x 42 x 50 cm and with a maximum mass of 25 kg. Also, cargo is normally loaded into rack sectors, or 'shelves.'

Moving a large, 50-kg water processing unit in space requires skill and precision, while on Earth gravity becomes an extra force to contend with.

In addition, the unit is too big to be loaded inside a rack, so it must be loaded in one of the large M-01 bags that are mounted on Adapter Plates to the front of the racks. Although the contents of an M-01 bag must fit through ATV's hatch, the bag itself does not. Luckily NASA had given the ATV team a few months' warning, so the team set down to tackle the problem.

Reserving the space for the water processing unit was easy. An M-01 bag was earmarked and placed in the ATV. Can you spot the empty bag in the picture below?

A full scale mock-up of the ATV in launch position had just been built in Switzerland (to test a new last-minute loading crane which will be used on ATV-4). Although the crane would not be ready for this launch, the mock-up did give the team a good environment to practice lowering and stowing the water processing unit for ATV-3.

Loading the water unit requires opening the M-01 bag and undoing the straps. However these straps also keep the bags secured to the Adapter Plate mounted on the front of the rack. The platform that lowers the engineer is not wide enough to support the bag when unclipped. Therefore, a sling was designed to carry the load of the bag when unstrapped.

One problem encountered during the practice runs was that the sling did not prevent the bag from sliding out of the retaining fence on the Adapter Plate. This meant that the bag started to sag leaving a gap between the stowage and its temporary support. A simple but effective solution was found: insert a wedge to hold everything up.

After a few simulations the ATV team were able to master the new process and are ready to load the water unit for real, in Kourou, just prior to next month's launch. They will be travelling to Kourou next week where the finished water processing unit will be flown in from Houston.

We are sure the astronauts in space will 'appreciate' (if that's the right word!) efforts made on Earth so that they can drink their processed urine.

Yes, ATV-3 will bring 285 litres of fresh water – but recycling (and having a back-up unit in orbit) is always a good thing![/size]

Outfitted with eight supply racks, two more than the first two ATV missions, craft will carry about 1,300 pounds more dry cargo than the disposable freighter's previous flight last year.

"Every cubic centimeter of the carrier is at full capability," said a European Space Agency fact sheet.

The ATV is the space station's largest resupply vessel following the retirement of the space shuttle.

It's also loaded with more than 3,000 pounds less rocket fuel than the ATV 2 flight, which boosted the space station's orbit by 22 miles in June 2011. No such reboost is planned for the ATV 3 mission.

Officials can adjust the cargo manifest on each ATV mission based on the needs of the space station. ATV 3 carries 220 pounds of pressurized gas and 75 gallons of potable water for the outpost's atmosphere and residents.

The spacecraft is being prepared for launch in March from the Guiana Space Center, a European-run spaceport in French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America.

Already filled with propellant, water, pressurized air and oxygen, and most of its dry cargo, the 32-foot-long spacecraft was slowly towed from the Guiana Space Center's S5 processing facility to the Ariane 5's final assembly building Tuesday night, according to Massimo Cislaghi, ESA's manager of the ATV 3 mission.

The adapter connecting the ATV with the Ariane 5 launcher's upper stage was scheduled to be added to the rocket Wednesday, and the 22-ton cargo freighter willbe lifted on top of the launcher Thursday, crowning the 165-foot-tall vehicle. The Ariane 5's payload fairing will be added to encapsulate the ATV on Feb. 27, according to Cislaghi.

ATV 3 is nicknamed Edoardo Amaldi after the Italian physicist who make groundbreaking discoveries in nuclear and particle physics and later helped foster the precursor to ESA.

The ATV will refuel the space station with maneuvering propellant, replenish the outpost's atmosphere with oxygen and air, and deliver 4,850 pounds of dry cargo, including spare parts, food and payloads.

Launch of the ATV is scheduled for March 9 at about 1000 GMT (5 a.m. EST). The robotic spacecraft will dock with the space station's Zvezda service module March 19 at 0238 GMT (10:38 p.m. EDT on March 18 ), according to projections.

The launch and docking times will be adjusted over the coming weeks.

Using special techniques while the ATV is mounted on top of the launcher, technicians will next week load nearly 1,179 pounds more cargo into the freighter's pressurized cabin. The complex process will take two days to complete beginning Feb. 14, according to Cislaghi.

Engineers expanded the late cargo load for ATV 3, doubling the mass of supplies to be installed inside the ship so close to liftoff over the second ATV mission, which launched in February 2011.

Workers will place about 60 bags of cargo into the spacecraft next week, including crew care packages for each of the six residents aboard the international outpost.

Another late addition to the ATV's cargo manifest is a pump for the station's urine processing system, which purifies waste water into drinking water for the crew aboard the orbiting lab.

The fluids control pump assembly, provided by NASA, moves urine from a waste water tank into a distiller, which removes contaminants from the liquid.

The 110-pound pump would normally be placed inside the ATV with other large pieces of cargo, but the assembly did not arrive when most of the ship's payload was loaded last fall. Instead, the pump must be carefully lowered through the craft's forward hatch, which points up when the ATV is attached to the Ariane 5 launcher.

The Edoardo Amaldi cargo ship will remain attached to the space station until late August, when it will undock and burn up in Earth's atmosphere, disposing of trash from the outpost.[/size]

Since arrival at Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, last August, the space ferry has been undergoing intensive preparations to fly to the International Space Station next month.

The vessel's mission is set to start with liftoff at 10:00 GMT (11:00 CET) on 9 March on a powerful Ariane 5 ES launcher. It will dock automatically with the Station at 01:38 GMT (02:38 CET) on 19 March, remaining attached until the end of August.

Launch preparations began as soon as the 10-tonne ferry's two main sections – the cargo carrier and the spacecraft itself – arrived in French Guiana by ship late in August.

"By end-August, we had moved both halves into their respective cleanrooms here and started checking that everything was OK after the sea journey," says ESA's Charlotte Beskow, ATV deputy launch campaign manager.

January saw a series of delicate fuelling operations, says Charlotte: "By the end of last week, we had loaded 5411 kg of fuel, to be used to power itself and to perform reboost and attitude control of the Station, plus 860 kg of fuel to be transferred to the Russian Station segment. We've also taken on air and oxygen."
 
Part of February will be spent loading 535 kg of last-minute items, which must be carefully lowered into the ATV's cargo compartment via the main docking hatch.

In parallel, the operations team at the ATV Control Centre in Toulouse, France, have been running exhaustive simulations to ensure that controllers and engineers are ready for all phases of the flight as well as any emergencies.
 
"We practise for any conceivable situation. For example, what to do if docking goes wrong or if we suddenly lost our main flight computers," says Jean-Michel Bois, Head of the ESA Operations Management Team in Toulouse.

"The entire ground team and our mission control systems passed the Joint Operational Readiness Review with NASA and Russia's Roscosmos/RSC Energia on 17 January, and, here in Toulouse, we completed a tough, three-day simulation on 27 January.

As of today, we are ready to go to the Space Station."

Last week, ATV-3 also passed the critical Flight Acceptance and Operations Readiness reviews, but a number of crucial launch preparations must still be completed.

Technicians lowered the Ariane 5 launcher's aerodynamic nose cone atop Europe's next space station resupply freighter Monday, enclosing seven tons of cargo for liftoff from French Guiana scheduled for March 9.

Europe's third Automated Transfer Vehicle will haul 14,539 pounds of equipment, breathing air, water and propellant to the International Space Station.

Launch is set for approximately 1005 GMT (5:05 a.m. EST) on March 9, or at 7:05 a.m. local time at the Guiana Space Center, a French-run spaceport on the edge of South America's Amazon jungle.

An Ariane 5 rocket will boost the 22-ton spaceship into orbit during a one-hour mission, then the ATV will fine-tune its approach to the space station, eventually docking to the outpost's Russian segment late on March 18, U.S. time.

Monday's encapsulation procedure marked the final time engineers will have access to the ATV spacecraft, which is nicknamed Edoardo Amaldi after the Italian physicist who made groundbreaking discoveries in nuclear and particle physics and later helped foster the precursor to ESA.

"It's the last time we'll see ATV 3 until it appears on the ISS camera screen the day of docking," said Massimo Cislaghi, ATV 3 mission manager.

The Ariane 5 rocket's 5.4-meter, or 17.7-foot, diameter payload fairing was lowered on top of the Edoardo Amaldi spaceship Monday afternoon, according to Cislaghi.

Built by RUAG Space of Zurich, the fairing protects the spacecraft in a controlled environment during the days before liftoff and the launcher's ascent through the lower atmosphere. It is jettisoned in two halves once the rocket reaches a safe altitude, usually more than 60 miles above Earth.

The operation occurred inside the Ariane 5 launcher's final assembly building. The ATV payload was lifted atop the rocket's upper stage Feb. 9.

Workers loaded the spacecraft's pressurized compartment with nearly 1,300 pounds of cargo over two days beginning Feb. 14. The late cargo complement included crew care packages and a pump for the station's urine processing system, which purifies waste water into drinking water for the crew aboard the orbiting lab.

Installing supplies when the ATV is in a vertical position required special techniques and equipment. The late cargo load for this flight was doubled from the second ATV mission in 2011.

The craft's hatch was closed for flight Feb. 16. Since then, technicians have inspected the spacecraft, checked its multi-layer thermal blankets, and removed safety covers and other ground support items.

The rocket will be rolled to the launch pad March 7, Cislaghi said in an interview from French Guiana on Monday.

"Before that, basically on the ATV side, we are always performing health checks and monitoring the health of the spacecraft until launch, including monitoring the environmental parameters," Cislaghi said. "It's kind of a routine activity. Most of the work on the hardware remaining is on the launcher side with the fueling of the various segments of the Ariane 5 launcher."

The Ariane 5 rocket's upper stage will be fueled with storable propellant later this week, and launch readiness reviews are planned March 5 and March 6.

Final arming of the 16-story rocket is scheduled for March 6.

Arianespace... Edoardo Egress — Postponed!

Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 5 for the orbiting of Europe's third Automated Transfer Vehicle...
...is now requiring some additional checks, which is resulting in a postponement for this servicing mission to the International Space Station. This delay was caused due to a routine inspection that concluded additional measures are required to maximize the ATV's launch readiness. A new liftoff date will be provided as soon as possible.

...The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is now complete following installation of its payload fairing, marking an important step as final preparations continue for the March 9th mission from French Guiana to service the International Space Station. Since Friday, when it had become clear that ATV-32s hatch would have to be reopened for a physical inspection of the cargo bags, thus delaying lift-off, the joint ESA/CNES mission control team at the ATV Control Centre (ATV-CC), Toulouse, have been working intensely to completely replan the mission timeline. This means that each and every individual event in the mission — and there are many thousands — must be rescheduled to take into account the new expected lift-off and docking times.

What's included in the mission timeline? A huge number of critical steps, like switching on-board systems on or off, commanding thruster firings, health checks, fuel and power checks, opening and closing of communication slots, mission control team schedules, docking, undocking and much more. In addition, everything must be double checked to ensure that no activity or step in the timeline interferes with any ot her step — or with operations/activities that are happening in parallel on board the ISS or with other visiting vessels, especially around rendezvous and docking.

For example, ATV mission operations must be tightly coordinated with availability of communication slots provided by NASA's TDRS (Tracking and Data Relay Satellites) communication satellites, which are used by ATV controllers to communicate with the vessel.

On Friday, as the ESA and CNES mission teams were working, ESA's Jean-Michel Bois, head of the ESA Operations Management Team at ATV-CC, sent in this note:
 You are probably aware that the ATV-3 launch will be postponed until a date to to confirmed by Arianespace. The new launch date would be in, roughly, two weeks, with a docking date at the end of March.

As soon as the postponement was announced, the ATV-CC teams started to assess the consequences; we immediately cancelled all reservations for facilities supporting ATV operations based on the previous launch and docking dates [Like NASA TDRS - Ed.].

The ESA and CNES ATV-CC teams are currently working on a new scenario to replan ATV operations and required support. We are contacting our ISS international partners to define the new conditions for docking. The CNES flight dynamics team has started a new run of computations using the new forecast launch time, orbital parameters and definition of the manoeuvres to be performed to reach the ISS. Other ATV-CC teams are also reassessing all the schedules, ground segment availabilities and much more. These activities will continue this weekend at ATV-CC in order to generate a new, consolidated mission timeline on Monday.

By late Friday evening, after discussions between Kourou, Toulouse and Houston, a new forecast for lift-off and docking was in hand, with launch and docking expected on 23 March at 4:31 GMT (5:31 CET) and 28 March at 22:51 GMT (00:51 CET), respectively.

All operational activities to prepare for ATV launch and the new mission plan until docking have been replanned. Synchronisation of these activities with our operational partners has been done and the TDRS communication relay satellite reservation requests for new communication slots are on-going, according to the new launch schedule.

I would like to thank all the ATV-CC teams who are working very hard both Friday night and on the weekend. They have again demonstrated a high level of efficiency and dedication to replan the ATV operational timeline and be ready to support the new launch date.

Astrium... Upcoming Heavyweight Flight

Astrium is completing the mission preparation for the Automated Transfer Vehicle ATV-3.
On March 23, 2012, the unmanned cargo resupply spacecraft named after the Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi will be launched on its five-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on board the European Ariane 5  ES launcher. Astrium is the industrial prime contractor for both the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and the Ariane 5 European launcher. This will be the third ATV mission to ferry supplies to the International Space Station. ATV could be currently considered as the 'best spaceflight robot' due to its innovative technologies which enable it to dock automatically with the ISS at about 28,000 km/h.

The Edoardo Amaldi ATV is currently awaiting transfer to the launch pad, having completed an extensive series of tests over the last few weeks. These included combined tests to check the interface between the launcher and ATV, verification of the air cleanliness in the cargo module, and pressure and leak tests. The Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC) of the Edoardo Amaldi has been loaded to capacity with supplies for day-to-day use including food, clothing, toiletries, consumables, tools, medical supply packages, replacement parts and new experiments. Known as 'dry cargo', this constitutes a total weight of 2.2 tons. Around 1.6 tonnes of this dry cargo is the 'nominal load cargo', which is loaded onto the vehicle a few months before the launch, while the remaining 600kg—known as 'late load cargo'—are added to the ATV just three weeks prior to launch. Late load cargo includes perishable items and experiments that can only be kept in storage for a limited time.

The ATV's various tanks will carry more than four tons of propellants and gases to the International Space Station (the ATV total is more than six tons including propellant needed for its own journey). The propellants will be used for multiple purposes, including attitude control, maneuvering, and refuelling the ISS. The Edoardo Amaldi ATV will also transport 285kg of water and 100kg of oxygen to the ISS. With a take-off weight approaching 20 tons, the ATV-3 is one of the heaviest payloads ever carried into orbit by an Ariane launcher.

The 2.2 tons of cargo and 1,062 individual items are divided up into a total of 153 bags to enable the astronauts to unload the Edoardo Amaldi on a gradual basis, according to their requirements. One of the items the ATV-3 will be carrying is a new ventilator for the European Columbus laboratory. Regular replacement of this lab component is just one of the tasks undertaken by Astrium as part of the Exploitation Contract which was signed with ESA for the European components of the ISS. The Edoardo Amaldi ATV will also be carrying a whole series of new experiments to the ISS. For instance, the cargo includes a human biology experimental device which will investigate the body's energy management processes under weightless conditions. This experiment will provide important insights which can be applied to future long-term missions in weightless conditions. In addition, the BIOLAB facility in the Columbus research laboratory will be equipped with a module which will make it possible to deliver precisely defined supplies of clean air to the experiments performed in the laboratory.

The ATV-3 payload will also include toothbrushes of different bristle hardness and toothpaste of various flavors as part of efforts to make the astronauts feel more at home on the ISS. One of the cargo bags will even contain LEGO® Technic sets, part of a range of experiments that NASA is conducting for a special series of lessons for school pupils back on Earth.

Arianespace's Ariane 5 with its Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) payload is complete once again after reinstallation of the launcher's payload fairing this week at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

The activity follows additional inspections required inside the ATV cargo carrier, which was decided after the Ariane 5's initial payload fairing encapsulation had been completed in late February.  In order to enable this unplanned inspection – ordered by the mission's European Space Agency customer – launch team members removed the payload fairing while the Ariane 5 remained inside the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building.  It was followed by the fairing's second integration after the inspections were completed.

The ATV, named after Italian physicist and spaceflight pioneer Edoardo Amaldi, is now undergoing final checkout for the March 23 launch on a resupply mission to the International Space Station.  Fitted with 6.6 metric tons of cargo, the ATV will serve as a resupply spacecraft and "tug" for the orbital station during several months.

In addition to a cargo composed of experiments, food, clothing, tools and spare parts, ATV Edoardo Amaldi also carries oxygen, air and water, along with propellants for its own propulsion systems and to refuel the International Space Station.

For the upcoming launch, Ariane 5's total payload lift performance is 20,075 kg. – which includes 19,714 kg. for the ATV, making it the heaviest payload ever lofted by Arianespace's workhorse launcher.

The ATV is a European Space Agency-led program, with the resupply spacecraft built by EADS' Astrium business unit as the lead in a large European industrial consortium.

Coverage Set for European Cargo Delivery to Space Station

The 13-ton "Edoardo Amaldi" spacecraft, named in honor of the 20th-century Italian physicist who is regarded as one of the fathers of European spaceflight, will carry 7.2 tons of propellant, water and supplies to the six crew members aboard the orbital laboratory.

An Ariane 5 rocket that will place the cargo ship into orbit is scheduled to launch at 11:34 p.m. CDT on March 22 from the Arianespace launch site in Kourou, French Guiana. NASA TV's coverage of the launch will begin at 11 p.m.

Like two predecessors that flew to the station in 2008 and 2011, the Edoardo Amaldi will conduct a slow, methodical trek to the complex under the guidance of engineers at the Automated Transfer Vehicle Control Center in Toulouse, France. It automatically will dock to the aft port of the Russian Zvezda service module at 5:34 p.m. on March 28. NASA TV coverage of the docking will begin at 4:45 p.m.

Edoardo Amaldi is expected to remain at the outpost through early September, when it will undock and be commanded to deorbit and burn up upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

Mounted on a mobile platform and riding dual rail tracks, an Ariane 5 rocket rolled to its launch pad in French Guiana on Wednesday morning, making the journey from its assembly building in about one hour.

Rollout from the final assembly building began at 1415 GMT (10:15 a.m. EDT; 11:15 a.m. French Guiana time) and concluded at 1530 GMT (11:30 a.m. EDT; 12:30 p.m. French Guiana time).

After reaching the launch pad, the rocket was supposed to be connected to ground utilities, including electrical and fueling systems. Workers at the South America launch site planned to fill the Ariane 5's helium pressurant system later Wednesday.

Launch is set for 0434 GMT (12:34 a.m. EDT; 1:34 a.m. French Guiana time) Friday.

The final countdown will begin Thursday at 1704 GMT (1:04 p.m. EDT), and a check of the launcher's electrical systems is scheduled for 2104 GMT (5:04 p.m. EDT), followed by configuring the rocket's core stage and Vulcain 2 engine for fueling.

At 2234 GMT (6:34 p.m. EDT), workers will prepare the launch pad for liftoff as the launch team loads the rocket's flight program into its computers, checks radio links between the vehicle and the Ariane launch base, and aligns the Ariane 5's navigation system for flight.

One hour later, at 2334 GMT (7:34 p.m. EDT), the pad crew will evacuate the ELA-3 launch zone before fueling of the Ariane 5 launcher gets underway. The rocket's first stage will be filled with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants during the countdown.

The Ariane 5's two strap-on boosters burn solid fuel, and storable hypergolic propellants were loaded aboard the launcher's upper stage earlier in March.

Chilldown of the first stage Vulcain engine is expected at about 0134 GMT (9:34 p.m. EDT).

Computers will assume control of the countdown 7 minutes before liftoff at 0427 GMT (12:27 a.m. EDT), managing a fast-paced series of events to pressurize the rocket's propellant tanks, switch the launcher to on-board power, arm its destruct system, and ignite its main engine.

Today's approval came at the conclusion of a comprehensive Launch Readiness Review, which is performed before every Arianespace mission to review the "go" status of the launcher, its payload, the Spaceport's infrastructure, and the network of ground tracking stations.

This clears the way for tomorrow's rollout of the Ariane 5 from its Final Integration Building at the Spaceport to the facility's ELA-3 launch site. The flight will mark another operational milestone for Arianespace, as its workhorse Ariane 5 will be carrying its heaviest payload ever – with the Automated Transfer Vehicle weighing more than 20 metric tons.

The no. 3 ATV is named after Italian physicist and spaceflight pioneer Edoardo Amaldi, and is carrying 6.6 metric tons of cargo for the International Space Station.  In addition to serving as a resupply spacecraft, the ATV also will function as a "tug" while docked to the crewed orbital facility for up to six months.

Built for the European Space Agency by an Astrium-led industrial consortium, the cylinder-shaped ATV is nearly 10 meters long and 4.5 meters in diameter.   In its launch configuration atop Ariane 5, the spacecraft is encapsulated in a 17-meter-tall payload fairing.

ATV Edoardo Amaldi's liftoff is planned at 1:34 a.m. local time in French Guiana on March 23, with this precise timing required for the spacecraft's orbital positioning to dock with the International Space Station.

The upcoming mission follows Arianespace's launch of the first two ATVs, which were lofted by Ariane 5s in February 2011 and March 2008.

Utilizing an Ariane 5 ES version of Arianespace's heavy-lift workhorse, this flight is to last just over one hour, and it will include two burns of the launcher's EPS storable propellant upper stage – separated by a 40-minute-plus ballistic coast phase. The ATV is to be released into a 260-kilometer orbit.

Named after Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi, Europe's third ATV will carry "dry cargo" (including experiments, food, clothing, tools and spare parts), along with water, gas and propellant for delivery to the crewed orbital facility. Запуск ракеты-носителя Ariane-5 с кораблем ATV-3 состоялся в 08.31 мск.

Отделение космического грузовика от ракеты-носителя запланировано на 9.39 мск. Стыковка ATV-3 с МКС намечена на 29 марта в 02.51 мск.
ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) - автоматический грузовой космический корабль, предназначенный для доставки топлива, научного оборудования, продуктов, воздуха и воды на Международную космическую станцию. Кроме того, с помощью двигателей ATV осуществляется коррекция орбиты МКС. Как ожидается, аппарат доставит на МКС 6,59 тонны груза - топливо, воду, кислород, продукты и другие грузы. Всего он проведет на орбите 171 день.
Возможно, самый ценный компонент груза ATV-3 - это блок перекачки жидкости (FCPA) - важнейшая часть системы переработки урины в питьевую воду. В данный момент на cтанции находится только один блок FCPA. В случае его отказа астронавты будут некоторое время обеспечены водой, но использование cтанции на полную мощность станет невозможным.

ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) - автоматический грузовой космический корабль, предназначенный для доставки топлива, научного оборудования, продуктов, воздуха и воды на Международную космическую станцию. Кроме того, с помощью двигателей ATV осуществляется коррекция орбиты МКС. Как ожидается, аппарат доставит на МКС 6,59 тонны груза - топливо, воду, кислород, продукты и другие грузы. Всего он проведет на орбите 171 день.
Как и его предшественник, ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер", ATV-3 доставит для экипажа продукты питания, воду, кислород, а также экспериментальное оборудование и средства обслуживания. Возможно, самый ценный компонент груза ATV-3 - это блок перекачки жидкости (FCPA), важнейшая часть системы переработки урины в питьевую воду. В данный момент на cтанции находится только один блок FCPA. В случае его отказа астронавты будут некоторое время обеспечены водой, но использование cтанции на полную мощность станет невозможным.
"Эдоардо Амальди" обладает наибольшей грузоподъемностью из всех кораблей посещения МКС. ATV-3 - единственный аппарат, кроме российского "Прогресса", способный осуществлять функции дозаправки, ориентации и регулярной коррекции орбиты станции. Кроме того, в случае угрозы столкновения с космическим мусором он может выполнять маневр уклонения.
Корабль способен самостоятельно осуществлять навигацию и автоматическую стыковку с МКС.
ATV-3 нельзя назвать точной копей ATV-2, запущенного в 2011 году. "Эдоардо Амальди" доставит почти на 600 килограммов больше сухих грузов. Объем грузового пространства был расширен за счет увеличения количества полок с шести (на первых двух аппаратах) до восьми, каждый кубический сантиметр грузового отсека корабля максимально используется.
"Эдоардо Амальди" проведет на орбите более пяти месяцев в качестве герметичного отсека орбитального комплекса. Фактическое время на орбите может быть увеличено до шести месяцев - это зависит от потребностей Международной космической станции и графика полетов кораблей посещения.
Во время совместного полета экипаж постепенно разгрузит корабль и заменит груз жидкими и твердыми отходами, занимающими драгоценное пространство на станции. Всего более шести тонн отходов с МКС будут уничтожены во время спуска ATV-3.
По завершении миссии экипаж закроет герметичный люк, и по команде с Земли космический корабль отстыкуется от МКС. В начале сентября текущего года ATV-3 начнет обратный полет, освободив стыковочный узел для другого корабля.
Первый ATV получил название "Жюль Верн" (Jules Verne). В 2008 году он совершил демонстрационный полет на МКС и доставил на станцию груз массой 4,5 тонны. Второй "еврогрузовик" ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер" прибыл к МКС в феврале 2011 года и оставался пристыкованным к станции до конца июня.

На МКС нет иллюминатора со стороны подхода грузовика, но члены экипажа станции смогут наблюдать сближение с помощью камеры, установленной в хвостовой части модуля «Звезда». После стыковки и подключения всех интерфейсов экипаж сможет открыть люк и войти в герметичный отсек ATV.

          "Эдоардо Амальди" проведет на орбите более пяти месяцев. Фактическое время на орбите может быть увеличено до шести месяцев - это зависит от потребностей Международной космической станции и графика полетов космических кораблей.

Сделано изумительно.
Есть два вопроса, может кто нибудь ответит.
1. 17 секунда. Сопло при выходе на основной режим качается.
От нагрузок его так болтает или это тест рулевых машинок?
2. 3:47 секуонда. Отделение ГО. Такие колебания - норма? Это результат нагрузок при отделении или все таки воздействие какого-никакого скоростного напора?

Please note that this footage is old (Flight V173, october 2006). Usually, there is no onboard cameras on Ariane 5.
These fluctuations of the payload fairing are normal, but I don't know there root cause.

ATV-3 Update: Ground analysis of the long-lens photography conducted by the crew yesterday has confirmed that the Proximity Antenna boom is properly deployed and in the locked position. ESA reports that ATV-3 is in good shape for rendezvous and docking.

One minor issue was seen during the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) — it was noted that the ATV's Proximity Link Antenna Boom (the Antenna Deployable Boom or ADB) had correctly deployed, but the final sensor confirmation that the boom was locked into place was not received.

Yesterday, since ATV is orbiting just 100km below the ISS, it was decided to ask the crew to get a picture for a visual confirmation that the antenna was in place. The ATV attitude was accordingly manoeuvred a bit, so that the astronauts would get a good view of the antenna boom the next time ATV passed by below.

Before the astronauts could do so however, at 09:03 CEST this morning, the telemetry status from ATV switched over to 'ADB Locked'. End of problem.

But what caused the sensor to switch to green? ESA's Daniel Firre, the Mission Director on console this morning when it switched, says a number of causes are possible. It could be vibrations from the manoeuvre, exposure of a boom element to solar heat, or even the unfreezing of a small piece that might have been blocking the mechanism or the sensor.

Если при выходе на режим, давление в системе может быть недостаточным.

В данный момент на cтанции находится только один блок FCPA. В случае его отказа астронавты будут некоторое время обеспечены водой, но использование cтанции на полную мощность станет невозможным.

"Эдоардо Амальди" обладает наибольшей грузоподъемностью из всех кораблей посещения МКС. ATV-3 - единственный аппарат, кроме российского "Прогресса", способный осуществлять функции дозаправки, ориентации и регулярной коррекции орбиты станции. Кроме того, в случае угрозы столкновения с космическим мусором он может выполнять маневр уклонения.

Корабль способен самостоятельно осуществлять навигацию и автоматическую стыковку с МКС.

ATV-3 нельзя назвать точной копей ATV-2, запущенного в 2011 году. "Эдоардо Амальди" доставит почти на 600 килограммов больше сухих грузов. Объем грузового пространства был расширен за счет увеличения количества полок с шести (на первых двух аппаратах) до восьми, каждый кубический сантиметр грузового отсека корабля максимально используется.

"Эдоардо Амальди" проведет на орбите более пяти месяцев в качестве герметичного отсека орбитального комплекса. Фактическое время на орбите может быть увеличено до шести месяцев - это зависит от потребностей Международной космической станции и графика полетов кораблей посещения.

Во время совместного полета экипаж постепенно разгрузит корабль и заменит груз жидкими и твердыми отходами, занимающими драгоценное пространство на станции. Всего более шести тонн отходов с МКС будут уничтожены во время спуска ATV-3.

По завершении миссии экипаж закроет герметичный люк, и по команде с Земли космический корабль отстыкуется от МКС. В начале сентября текущего года ATV-3 начнет обратный полет, освободив стыковочный узел для другого корабля.

Первый ATV получил название "Жюль Верн" (Jules Verne). В 2008 году он совершил демонстрационный полет на МКС и доставил на станцию груз массой 4,5 тонны. Второй "еврогрузовик" ATV-2 "Иоганн Кеплер" прибыл к МКС в феврале 2011 года и оставался пристыкованным к станции до конца июня.

МОСКВА, 29 мар - РИА Новости. Члены экипажа МКС открыли люки европейского грузового корабля ATV-3 "Эдоардо Амальди", пристыковавшегося к станции минувшей ночью, сообщают российское и европейское космические агентства.

"ATV увеличил объем внутреннего пространства станции на 48 кубометров", - отмечается в сообщении ЕКА.

Открытие люка корабля, пристыкованного к российскому модулю "Звезда", началось в 21.33 мск.

На грузовике сработала аварийная система, и ATV перешел на автономное электропитание, сообщил руководитель программы ATV Нико Деттман (Nico Dettmann).

"Потеря одного из четырех взаимозаменяемых блоков не рассматривается как критическая, сейчас специалисты решают вопрос о восстановлении его работоспособности", - сказал Деттман, слова которого приводятся на сайте ATV.

The crew aboard the International Space Station has opened hatches leading to a newly-arrived European cargo craft, but engineers on the ground are drafting contingency plans to end the resupply mission early if they are unable to fix an electrical system glitch.

Engineers at the cargo ship's control center in Toulouse, France, reported the failure of one of two redundant Russian Equipment Control System channels that route station power to the Automated Transfer Vehicle, according to a NASA update issued Friday.

A backup power channel passed in initial test Friday, but it has not yet been connected to the space station electrical system, the update said.

If engineers are unable to route the space station's power supply to the ATV, the freighter's own solar panels are unable to generate sufficient electricity due to unfavorable sun angles, according to European Space Agency controllers.

The Automated Transfer Vehicle, christened Edoardo Amaldi after an Italian physicist and space pioneer, needs access to the space station's power supply to stay at the complex.

The bus-sized spacecraft, which docked to the space station Wednesday, may have to depart the complex early if the lab's power cannot be extended to the ATV. Current schedules call for the freighter to remain at the space station until at least late August.

"While it is highly unlikely, the situation could lead to an earlier than planned undocking of ATV 3," the NASA update said. "NASA, ESA and Russian space agency experts are working together on contingency plans to try to extend power to the ATV 3. The multinational team is drafting a plan for the unloading of critical cargo if a worst-case scenario should lead to an expedited undocking."

Controllers plan to fire the ATV's thrusters Saturday to reboost the space station's orbit by about two miles.

But the reboost will be cancelled if the power issue is not resolved by Saturday morning.

Another orbit-raising maneuver by the ATV is scheduled for Thursday, April 5. The reboosts will adjust the space station's orbit for the departure of a Russian Progress spacecraft April 19 and the arrival of another Progress resupply mission April 22.

Европейский грузовой корабль помог поднять орбиту Международной космической станции (МКС) на 1,7 километра, сообщили в пресс-службе подмосковного Центра управления полетами (ЦУП).

«Тестовая коррекция орбиты осуществлена в соответствии с программой баллистического обеспечения полета МКС», - заявил представитель пресс-службы ЦУПа в субботу.

По данным баллистической службы ЦУПа, после 411 секунд работы корректирующих двигателей МКС получила импульс в один метр в секунду. «Высота орбиты станции увеличилась на 1,7 километра и составляет теперь 389,8 километра», - добавил собеседник агентства.

По его словам, в результате успешно проведенной операции была проверена работоспособность корабля ATV-3 «Эдоардо Амальди». «Маневр проводился с помощью двух основных двигателей европейского грузовика, пристыкованного к станции в минувший четверг», - уточнил представитель ЦУПа.

Он отметил, что поддержание требуемого пространственного положения МКС в момент коррекции обеспечивалось двигателями ориентации российского служебного модуля «Звезда» и грузового корабля «Прогресс М-14М», передает «Интерфакс».

Flight control teams in Moscow and Toulouse combed through International Space Station electrical data on April 2 in a bid to pinpoint the cause of a Russian power system failure that nearly prompted a premature jettison of the European Space Agency's recently docked Automated Transfer Vehicle-3.

An undocking of the propellant-laden ATV that would have taken place April 2 was averted over the weekend, as personnel at the ATV Control Center in Toulouse, Mission Control-Moscow and Mission Control-Houston teamed to power the 35-ft.-long freighter through a backup Russian Equipment Control System (RECS) channel. Aboard the orbiting science lab, the six-man crew joined the hastily planned March 31 response to the failure by off-loading the ATV-3's high-priority dry cargo: food, clothing and spare parts.

Though the cause of the failure had not been determined, ATV-3 systems were functioning normally and control teams were proceeding with plans for an April 5 reboost of the orbital outpost using the supply capsule's thrusters, according to Rob Navias, a spokesman for NASA, which manages the 15-nation station partnership.

The troubleshooting has not determined whether the primary RECS channel can be recovered, Navias says.

The third of five planned ESA ATVs docked smoothly late March 28, berthing to the aft end of the station's Russian segment.

It is to remain there through late August, serving as a propulsion source for regular station altitude as well as occasional debris-avoidance maneuvers.

Within 24 hr. of the linkup, the primary RECS power feed tripped as fans in the ATV turned on to filter the air prior to crew entry. The air filtration operation was under evaluation as a possible cause for the power problem, Navias says.

By late March 30, there was a new wrinkle as efforts to troubleshoot the interruption and activate the RECS backup were under way. Though the ATV-3 is also solar powered, the beta angle, or orientation of the Sun on the station's orbital plane, is increasing. Control teams determined that the freighter's solar arrays would become too shaded by April 2 to provide a secondary source of electricity, adding urgency to the activation of the RECS backup.

The RECS backup was successfully activated on March 31 shortly after 1 p.m. EDT. In the meantime, station commander Dan Burbank and his U.S., European and Russian crewmates managed to unload 40% of the ATV-3's 4,800 lb. of dry cargo.

With electricity flowing, the control teams also proceeded with a scheduled 6-min. 51-sec. station reboost on March 31, using the supply ship's thrusters at 5:54 p.m. The dual thrusters raised the station's mean altitude by 1 mi. to 243.6 statute mi. Though serving as a test of the ATV-3 propulsion system, the maneuver also positioned the station for upcoming cargo and crew transport activities.[/size]

Мне одно не понятно. На видео космонавт минут пять устанавливал поручни из багажа к стеллажам. Почему эти поручни не прикрепить на земле? Вроде как закладке груза они не мешают, да их можно установить и после укладки груза. Время ж у космонавтов очень ценный и дорогой ресурс, чтобы такой фигней заниматься...

Quick update from ESA Mission Director Jean-Michel Bois on the reboost manoeuvre this evening:

Reboost manoeuvre No. 1: 19:06 – 19:21 GMT; targeting 2.2 m/second ISS velocity increase ('delta-V')
Two of ATV's thrusters will be used (as usual, never all four at the same time)
ISS attitude control will be performed by the station (not by ATV this time, although that will be done in another boost, later)
ISS computers will control the ATV thrusters (this was already tested on 31 March); ISS computers under load and monitored by MCC-M (Moscow)
ATV-CC will configure all other subsystems of Edoardo Amaldi and monitor the ATV propulsion subsystem during the boost
ESA Mission Directors Emilio De Pasquale and Mike Steinkopf will be on console — working closely with a full CNES mission operations team, of course!

This just in from ESA's Mike Steinkopf at ATV-CC:

Tonight's reboost was successfully performed by using the ATV OCS (orbital Control System) thrusters starting at 19:05 GMT / 21:05 CEST. The delta-V (DV – change in Station velocity) was 2.2 m/s for a 15-minute burn, which raised the ISS by 3.86 km to a higher orbit.

A DV of 2.2 m/s during 15 minutes is a very smooth increasing acceleration; the crew reported a feeling similar to sitting in a commercial aircraft.

The reboost was needed in order to set up ISS phasing for the upcoming Progress 47 launch, the Soyouz 28 undock & landing and Soyuz 30 launch.

"Отстыковка ATV-3 от МКС планируется на 25 сентября", - заявил Пишель, выступая на Международном аэрокосмическом конгрессе в Москве.

Он также сообщил, что европейский манипулятор ERA будет запущен к МКС вместе с российским многофункциональным лабораторным модулем (МЛМ). Ранее сообщалось, МЛМ может быть запущен в конце 2013 - начале 2014 года.

Говоря о сотрудничестве ЕКА с РФ, он напомнил, что за последние десять лет на МКС было осуществлено десять европейских миссий.

"Следующий полет нашего астронавта запланирован на май 2013 года - это будет Лука Пармитано, в 2014 году на станцию полетит немецкий астронавт Александр Герст, в 2014 году также на станцию отправится итальянка Саманта Кристофоретти", - сказал Пишель.

По его словам, в рамках сотрудничества с РФ ЕКА в ближайшие годы планирует осуществить несколько научных миссий, в частности, в 2014 году планируется запуск космического аппарата "Бепи Коломбо", который будет исследовать орбиту Меркурия. На этом космическом аппарате будет установлен российский научный прибор, разработанный в Институте космических исследований (ИКИ).

По словам Пишеля, в 2016-2018 году планируется также совместно с Россией реализовать проект "ЭкзоМарс", а в 2020 году ЕКА планирует реализовать миссию к Юпитеру.

Пишель также сообщил, что бюджет ЕКА с 2010 по 2012 год вырос на 7% - с 3,7 миллиона евро до 4 миллионов евро (для сравнения бюджет НАСА в 2012 году составил 17,8 миллиона долларов, бюджет Роскосмоса в 2012 году составил более 5 миллионов долларов).

Пишель уточнил, что исследования по дистанционному зондированию Земли занимают большую часть бюджета ЕКА, а сам бюджет агентства формируется в основном за счет вложений от пяти стран (Германия, Франция, Великобритания, Испания, Италия).

Москва. 26 сентября. INTERFAX.RU - Европейский грузовой корабль ATV-3 попытаются отстыковать от МКС в ночь на пятницу, сообщили "Интерфаксу" в космической отрасли.

"Сейчас представители Роскосмоса и Европейского космического агентства согласуют дату и время повторения попытки отстыковать ATV-3 от МКС. Стороны сходятся к тому, чтобы произвести эту операцию примерно в 01:00 мск 28 сентября", - сказал собеседник агентства.

При этом, по его словам, сведение "грузовика" с орбиты и затопление его в южной части Тихого океана должно произойти примерно в 5:30 мск 3 октября.

Отстыковку ATV от МКС сорвала неверная цифра в радиокомандах

ЦитироватьМОСКВА, 26 сен - РИА Новости. Причиной сбоя при отстыковке европейского космического грузовика ATV-3 от Международной космической станции стала ошибка в одной цифре в радиокомандах на отстыковку, сообщает Европейское космическое агентство.

"Причина сбоя была установлена. Команды посылались с использованием неверного номера (ID) космического аппарата (34 вместо 35)", - говорится в сообщении.

Процедура отстыковки "Амальди" началась накануне вечером, когда члены экипажа МКС закрыли люк корабля. Затем они "разбудили" корабль - была включена его бортовая система управления. После этого были отсоединены кабели системы электроснабжения и передачи данных, и ATV был присоединен к МКС только механически - специальными стыковочными "крюками".

Дальнейшие команды передавалась по радиоканалу прямой связи ATV с МКС. Но на станции не было получено подтверждения, что команда была принята кораблем, в связи с чем процедура была остановлена.

Ранее источник в космической отрасли сообщил РИА Новости, что при передаче команды на борт "Амальди" был использован неверный электронный адрес корабля.

Вторая попытка отстыковки европейского грузового корабля ATV-3 от Международной космической станции не будет проведена 27 сентября - вместо нее корабль будет выполнять маневр увода МКС от угрожающего ей фрагмента космического мусора, сообщает Европейское космическое агентство.

Представитель российского ЦУПа подтвердил РИА Новости, что маневр уклонения планируется провести в ближайшее время.

"Импульс в 0,3 метра в секунду будет придан станции с помощью европейского грузового корабля ATV-3", - сказал собеседник агентства.

По данным НАСА, маневр для увода станции может понадобиться, чтобы избежать столкновения с фрагментом российского "Космоса" и обломком индийской ракеты. Если решение о маневре будет принято, он будет осуществляться в четверг в 08.12 по времени восточного побережья США (16.12 мск).

"Членам экипажа МКС ничего не угрожает, они продолжают выполнять научные исследования и работы по рутинному обслуживанию станции", - говорится в сообщении на сайте НАСА.

Ранее сообщалось, что повторная попытка отстыковки ATV-3 от МКС может быть предпринята в ночь с четверга на пятницу - в 21.00 по Гринвичу четверга (в 1.00 мск пятницы, 28 сентября). Первая попытка отстыковки "Амальди", запланированная на 2.35 мск среды, сорвалась из-за проблем с системой управления - в радиокомандах был неверно указан код корабля.

Европейский корабль был запущен к МКС в конце марта 2012 года. Он доставил на станцию более двух тонн груза. Перед отстыковкой экипаж МКС погрузил на корабль более 1,2 тонны мусора и отходов, которые вместе с кораблем должны были сгореть в атмосфере.

Все, что не происходит - к лучшему :) ATV-3 еще немного поработал на благо ПК.

Маневра уклонения МКС от обломков "Космоса-2251" и PSLV с помощью ATV-3 не будет, так как по новым расчетам в нем нет необходимости. Соответственно расстыковка ATV-3 вновь намечается на 28 сентября в 01:00 ЛМВ, а сход с орбиты - на 3 октября.

да кто его знает... но тем не менее такое правило есть.

Возможно связано с продувкой топливных магистралей - продули, все чисто-сухо, а тут опять всякая гадость в них осталась после маневра.

Ну или там уже какие то специфические операции перед отстыковкой уже идут на корабле, какие нить системы выключают, а тут опять все включать-налаживать.

Правило есть, и при составлении программы полета оно соблюдается.

... there is a tremendous amount of work that has to go into planning the departure.

For the original undocking, set for 26 Sep, the teams here had weeks of time to prepare, whereas today, a lot of work has to be squeezed into less than two days.

While ATV undockings always look smooth, there's a lot that must be done and coordinated - it really is rocket science!

Here's just a few items I extracted from today's mission management team meeting:

[*:d684871c58]Calculate fuel available, estimated usage, contingency reserves, reserves for ATV's own possible debris avoidance burns once in free flight, etc.

[*:d684871c58]Work several minor technical issues in collaboration with the colleagues at MCC-M (Moscow)

The European Space Agency's third Automated Transfer Vehicle departed the International Space Station late Sept. 28 with a final assignment: relay the destructive events surrounding its controlled plunge into the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean to an Aerospace Corp. research team.

Re-entry is set for late Oct. 2.

Data gathered and relayed to researchers by the Re-entry Breakup Recorder installed by the station's crew aboard the ATV-3 Eduardo Amaldi before the re-supply craft pushed away could influence the design of future orbital spacecraft to address the mounting orbital debris problem.

Efforts to discard the trash-filled freighter on Sept. 25 were delayed by an error in the command link between the station's Russian segment and the ATV-3, then by concerns that two pieces of orbital debris would pass close enough to the outpost and its three-member crew to require an avoidance maneuver.

By facilitating breakups that won't rain dangerous debris all the way to the Earth's surface, design changes could encourage greater reliance on random breakups to slow the growing accumulation of debris from aging satellites and spent rocket bodies circling the planet.

"We have a number of large object re-entries every year," William Ailor, REBR's Aerospace principal investigator, explained on NASA Television earlier this week. "And these objects that come in randomly can be large enough to cause hazards on the ground. That is one reason we want to know how things break up, to assess that hazard."

NASA's Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite, a 21-year-old decommissioned environmental spacecraft, carried out a widely reported uncontrolled re-entry on Sept. 24, 2012, without causing harm. With hardly any fanfare, five rocket and satellite fragments, some launched as long ago as 1978, have plunged back to Earth in a similar fashion since Aug. 1, according to an Aerospace Corp. count that illustrates uncontrolled re-entries are common.

As part of the REBR experiment, researchers are using the carefully controlled re-entries of larger European as well as Japanese ISS re-supply craft as test beds to study the breakup process. If there are lessons that can be applied to spacecraft lacking the costly propulsion systems of the Japanese and European freighters, the expense of re-entry to reduce the orbital debris problem drops substantially, Ailor explained.

The ATV-3's nine pound REBR package, placed near the crew access hatch, is essentially a cell phone with a heat shield surrounded by a copper shell.

As the ATV-3 re-enters, REBR will begin to log accelerations and attitude rates as well as temperature and pressure changes. Once it breaks free of the disintegrating capsule, the cell phone transmits the data through the Iridium satellite constellation so that it can be formatted on a web page.

REBR is two for three, successfully transmitting data as Japan's HTV-3 and HTV-2 ISS re-supply ships re-entered on Sept. 14 and March 30, 2011. Data was not captured as ESA's ATV-2 re-entered on June 11, 2011.

The ATV-3 undocked from the station's Russian segment at 5:44 p.m., ending a six-month stay.

Launched on March 23 from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, the unpiloted ATV-3 docked five days later, delivering over seven tons of cargo.[/size]

Ранее "Эдуардо Амальди" только со второго раза удалось отстыковать от МКС из-за ошибке в команде на одну цифру. Дата повторной отстыковки грузовика переносилась трижды.

ATV-3, прибывший на Международную космическую станцию в конце марта 2012 года, доставил туда около 6,5 тонн груза, включая воду, топливо и продукты. Это единственный аппарат, кроме российского "Прогресса", который может производить дозаправку, а также регулярно корректировать орбиту станции, отмечает агентство. С марта "Эдуардо Амальди" пять раз корректировал орбиту, причем одна из корректировок прошла неудачно из-за перегрева двигателей аппарата.
