OCEANSAT-2 is envisaged to continue the service of OCEANSAT-1. It will carry an Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) and a Ku-band pencil beam scatterometer.

In addition, it will carry radio occultation sounder for atmospheric studies (rosa), developed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). OCEANSAT-2 will be used for identification of potential fishing zones, sea state forecasting, coastal zone studies and provide inputs for weather forecasting and climatic studies. OCEANSAT-2 is scheduled for launch by PSLV in
2007-08 into a near polar sun-synchronous orbit of 720 km. This orbit combined with the wide swath of both payloads, will provide an observational repetitivity of two days.

OCM is an 8-band multi-spectral camera operating in the visible – near infrared spectral range. This camera provides an instantaneous geometric field of view of 360 meter covering a swath of 1420 km. There is provision to tilt OCM by + 20 deg. in the along-track direction.
Ku-band pencil beam scatterometer is an active microwave radar and operates at 13.515 GHz providing a ground resolution Cell of size 50 kms x 50 kms. It consists of a parabolic dish antenna of

1 Meter dia. which is offset mounted with respect to the yaw axis (earth viewing axis). This antenna is continuously rotated using a scan mechanism with the scan axis along the positive Yaw axis. The back scattered power in each beam from the ocean surface is measured from which the wind vector is derived.

The EPFL Space Center, in partnership with the LMTS, are leading the development of a small satellite, to be launched in 2009. This satellite follows the CubeSat standard (1kg cube with a 1 liter volume)providing a fast and affordable access to space and the possibility of collaboration with other universities developing their own cubesats.

Developing a satellite requires a very vast range of engineering skills, which makes it an excellent project for the EPFL and its partners. The SwissCube development is therefore distributed across the labs who wish to share their expertise. Currently 10 labs at the EPFL, 1 at the University of Neuchatel, four sites of the HES-SO (Sion, Yverdon, St Imier and Fribourg), and most recently the FHNW in Brugg are participating. Of course we welcome new partners.

The SwissCube will be designed and built by students, mostly in the framework of semester and master projects. Students will learn system engineering and concurrent design, and will be responsible for delivering on time and on budget complex sub-systems whose correct operation is essential to the success of the mission.

They will have the reward of seeing their work fly in space, within two years of starting their project. Join us for this unique opportunity to build space harware, and see your systems in orbit in 2009!

ЦитироватьABOUT SWISSCUBE

The primary objective of developing this satellite is to provide a dynamic and realistic learning environment for undergraduates, graduates and staff in the development of small satellite technology.

To maximize the educational benefit, the project is organized following the same phases as ESA or NASA projects, allowing students to see the trade-offs that occur in the design of any complex system. The students meet every week for a "concurrent design" session. Experts from the Swiss and European space industry participate in design reviews, sharing their expertise, and ensuring good communication between space professionals and students. This also gives industry the opportunity to train and evaluate students for possible future hires.
After discussions with several partners of the project, it was decided that the SwissCube mission should focus on the observation of the airglow phenomena. The airglow is a photoluminescence of the atmosphere occurring at approximately 100 km altitude. It is principally due to photodissociation, photo-excitation and excitation by fast electrons or ion recombination. The origin of nightglow is oxygen atom recombination, where the oxygen atoms are created in the daytime by solar photodissociation of O2

The scientific objectives are thus to observe oxygen emission in order to characterise the airglow intensity as a function of the observation angle (zenith or limb measurements), the altitude, the latitude and the local time. The minimum science duration is 3 months, with an extended science mission of duration up to 1 year.

The complete SwissCube system comprises the satellite including the scientific payload, and a ground segment for the control and monitoring of the satellite.

Satellite

The SwissCube satellite follows the CubeSat standard. It contains the payload and platform elements necessary to fulfill the mission objectives. The science package includes an optical assembly, the detector and the necessary electronics to drive it.
Ground Segment

Mission operations for SwissCube will be carried out at a dedicated satellite mission control centre, located at EPFL. Operations will begin following the separation of the satellite from the launch vehicle and will be maintained until the end of the mission. Activities undertaken by the operations team will include:
Overall mission planning
Satellite status monitoring
Satellite control via telecommand
Science data retrieval
Rough orbit determination
Maintenance of on-board software, if necessary

Telecommands and telemetry of SwissCube in the operational phase will be transmitted/received via the primary ground station at EPFL and through the UNISEC Ground Station Network.

September 7th, 2009 - 3:01 pm ICT by IANS  -

Chennai, Sep 7 (IANS) Some time between Sep 20 and 25, India will launch a specialised satellite to watch over the Indian Ocean, an official of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said Monday.
Oceansat 2 will be launched by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) into a sun-synchronous orbit 720 km above the earth, the official said on phone from ISRO's launch centre at Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), 70 km from here.

The PSLV will also carry a number of small "nano" satellites, the official said on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

"The PSLV is now standing tall at the launch pad as the integration of the four-stage rocket is being completed," the official said, adding that tests on the satellite were also on.

Oceansat 2 is expected to provide India with information about the state of the Indian Ocean, including better data about the movement of the monsoon winds vital to Indian agriculture.

On a mission: ISRO's Oceansat-2 undergoing pre-launch tests at Sriharikota.

CHENNAI: The launch campaign at the spaceport at Sriharikota is accelerating for the lift-off of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C14), which will put seven satellites in orbit. The launch is most likely to take place on September 23.

While the 960-kg Oceansat-2 is from India, the remaining six, all from abroad, are micro satellites weighing between one and eight kg. They are four Cubesats and two Rubinsats.

"The four-stage vehicle is fully integrated. We are going through the tests. After the vehicle is fully checked out, we will take in the satellites [that is, the satellites will be married up with the rocket]," said a top Indian Space Research Organisation engineer associated with the mission. It will be a core-alone PSLV version that will inject the satellites into orbit. The sleek, chiselled-looking vehicle does not have the six strap-on motors that surround the first stage in the standard PSLV version.

The vehicle's fourth stage will fire five satellites, one after another into orbit, akin to the "salvo of rockets issuing from a multi-barrel rocket launcher," another ISRO engineer said. After Oceansat-2 is slotted into its orbit first, a spring-loaded action would "push the chota fellows out" one after another. The two Rubinsats would not be ejected. They would remain permanently attached to the vehicle's fourth stage. "The Rubins will not be separated. They will do their work while they are attached to the PSLV's fourth stage. There will be no problem in that," he explained.
Study of climate

Oceansat-2 will continue to do the work done by Oceansat-1. It will investigate the interaction between oceans and the atmosphere to facilitate study of climate. It will study the wind above the oceans, and the sea surface temperature. The satellite will help in identifying schools of fish, predicting the state of the sea, keeping a tab on the phytoplankton blooms and studying suspended sediments in water.

S. Satish, Director, Publications and Publications, ISRO, said: "Oceans cover about 70 per cent of the earth's surface. Considering the importance of oceans as a source of food for humans and their role in shaping the earth's weather and climate, and their influence on the biological life cycle, study of oceans is cardinal. In this context, the Oceansat-2 mission acquires added significance."

One of the payloads of Oceansat-2, called Ocean Colour Monitor, will study the colour of oceans. "This will help in effective fishing," an ISRO scientist explained. Another payload, scatterometer, will investigate the interaction between the oceans and the atmosphere. In addition, there is a payload from the Italian Space Agency for studying the atmosphere.

The four Cubesats are from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Technical University of Berlin and University of Wurzburg, both in Germany, and Istanbul Technical University. These Cubesats weigh one kg each. The two Rubinsats, weighing eight kg each, are from Luxembourg and Germany. All the six will test advanced satellite and application technologies.

ISRO created a record in April 2008 when another PSLV core-alone version billeted home 10 satellites including India's Cartosat-2A.

"We conducted the pre-launch rehearsal -- all activities that have to be carried out ten hours before the actual launch -- starting at 2 a.m. Saturday and completed at 12.30 p.m. Everything went off well," said Prasad. He said the actual 49-hour countdown process will start Monday 8 a.m. The rocket will fly at 11.51 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Satish, Oceansat 2 will be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit 720 km above the earth.

Prasad added: "Oceansat 2 will cover the whole earth as the coverage strip will be moving since it is not geostationary satellite. The orbit is designed in such a way that the satellite will cross the Equator at 12 noon near India."

Along with Oceansat 2, four overseas Cubesats each weighing 1 kg will be ejected from the rocket, while the two Rubinsats each weighing 8 kg will orbit attached to the rocket's fourth stage, he added.

This will be the second time that ISRO will launch a cluster of nano satellites. In 2008 ISRO -- launching its cartography satellite (CARTOSAT-2A) and Indian Mini Satellite (IMS-1) -- also sent up eight nano satellites and set a world record of maximum number of satellites sent up in a single launch.

"The increased launch of nano satellites from foreign countries is expected to propel Indian universities to follow the footsteps of Anna University to build satellites," Satish remarked.

PSLV is a four-stage launch vehicle employing both solid and liquid propulsion stages. PSLV is the trusted workhorse launch Vehicle of ISRO. During Sep. 1993 - Apr. 2009 period, PSLV had fifteen launches of which fourteen were consecutively successful. PSLV has repeatedly proved its reliability and versatility by launching 39 spacecrafts (17 Indian and 22 for international customers) into a variety of orbits so far. It may be recalled that during its previous mission, PSLV had successfully launched RISAT-2 and ANUSAT spacecrafts on April 20, 2009.

In its standard configuration, the 44 m tall PSLV has a lift-off mass of 295 tonne. It is a four-stage launch vehicle with the first and the third stages as well as the six strap-ons surrounding the first stage using HTPB based solid propellant. PSLV's first stage is one of the largest solid propellant boosters in the world. Its second and fourth stages use liquid propellants.

This mission is unique for PSLV as this is the first time that new AMC/ATS based avionics is being used for a typical SSPO mission. A Core Alone configuration of the vehicle with PS4 L2.5 stage is being employed to put the satellites in orbit. This is the fifth mission of PSLV in Core alone configuration.

Major changes are:

-PS4 to use L2.5 stage
-First time use of ECI frame and Quaternion based computation for SSPO mission
-Introduction of a 45° inclined deck to mount Rubin spacecrafts on EB
-CUBESATs are separated using a separation system SPL supplied along with S/C by the user.

The 44.4 metre tall, four-stage 230-tonne PSLV-C14 took off without its six strap-on motors as all the seven satellites put together weighed less than 1000 kg.

After 18 minutes of blasting off from the Second Launch Pad of the SHAR Range PSLV-C14 successfully put Oceansat-2 in the desired orbit.

In a flawless and textbook precision mission, the PSLV-C14, in its 16th flight, demonstrated its prowess by placing the 960 Kg Oceansat-2 in the orbit.

Of the previous 15 flights during 1993-2009, the PSLV was successful on 14 occasions and had placed 32 spacecrafts (16 Indian and 16 for international customers) in a variety of orbits, proving its reliability and versatility.

ISRO scientists clapped and hugged each other with joy at the Mission Control Centre as the screens flashed the sequence of the injection of the satellite in 720 km orbit with an inclination of 98.28 degrees to the equator.

Vice-President Hameed Ansari. who also witnessed the launch, congratulated ISRO for the successful launch.

The same PSLV had successfully launched Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft last.

After the launch ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair expressed his satisfaction on the successful completion of the operations.

"We extremely proud in putting together the vehicle and attaining the target on time. The Prime Minister has expressed his best wishes to the successful launch of PSLV Oceansat-2," said Nair.

The launch is ISRO's first major satellite launch since Chandrayaan 1.

The Oceansat-2 is ISRO's second in the series of Indian Remote Sensing satellites dedicated to ocean research. The satellite will provide continuity to the applications of Oceansat-1, which was launched in 1999.

Oceansat-2 weighs 960kgs and is carrying two devices: the Ocean Colour Monitor and a Microwave Scatterometer, which help in tracking the onset of monsoon by measuring the wind speed over the surface of the ocean.

All data gathered will be made available to the global scientific community in six months.

Vice-President Hamid Ansari witnessed the PSLV-C14 launch from the Mission Control Centre at Sriharikota.

While M.Y.S. Prasad, Associate Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota called it "a good mission," S. Ramakrishnan, Director (Projects), VSSC, described it as "a wonderful mission."

R.R. Navalgund, Director, Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, said the 960-kg Oceansat-2, put in orbit by the PSLV-C14, had three important payloads. They were the ocean colour monitor, a scatterometer (both designed by the SAC) and Radio Occultation Sounder for Atmospheric Studies (ROSA) built by the Italian Space Agency. The ocean colour monitor would gather data about plant life in the oceans which would provide information on where schools of fish were located. The scatterometer would measure the sea surface winds. "Winds are important for weather forecasting and how the cyclones are generated," Dr. Navalgund said. Data from both these sensors would be available to the national and international community. The ROSA would study the temperature and humidity in the atmosphere. "These three payloads will help in monitoring many of the phenomena (related to the oceans and the atmosphere) and help in predicting the weather," Dr. Navalgund said.

The six nano satellites put in orbit by PSLV-C14 were educational satellites from abroad, meant to test new spacecraft technologies. Of the six, four were Cubesats weighing one kg each. They were from Ecole Polytechnique federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Technical University of Berlin and University of Wurzburg, both in Germany and Istanbul Technical University. The Rubinsats, weighing eight kg each, were from Luxembourg and Germany.

ЦитироватьPitch and yaw control of the PSLV during the thrust phase of the solid motor is achieved by injection of an aqueous solution of strontium perchlorate in the nozzle to constitute Secondary Injection Thrust Vector Control System (STIVC)[29]. The injection is stored in two cylindrical aluminum tanks strapped to the solid rocket motor and pressurized with nitrogen.
