20 January 2009 The next launch from Europe's Spaceport is scheduled for 12 February. The Ariane 5 ECA of flight V187 will carry the telecommunications satellites Hot Bird™ 10 and NSS-9 into geostationary transfer orbits. Two small Spirale satellites will be carried as auxiliary passengers in the launch vehicle's payload 'stack'.

Началась подготовка к запуску спутника "HOT BIRD-10"
Сегодня спутник прибывает во Фр.Гвиану грузовым самолетом Ан-124. Запуск запланирован на 12 февраля в рамках проекта "Ariane 5".
Спутник займет позицию 13Е и будет обслуживать Европу и Ближний восток.
Совместно с "HOT BIRD-10" на орбиту будет доставлен спутник "NSS-9" позиция 177 West.
Хотелось бы отметить, что спутник "NSS-9" имеет покрытие и на Россию, точнее её Дальневосточную часть.

Orbital is building the NSS-9 C-band satellite for SES NEW SKIES, an SES Global company. The satellite will be positioned at the orbital location of 183 degrees East, allowing the NSS-5 satellite to be re-deployed to a new orbital slot. The contract includes a firm order for one satellite and an option for another satellite, including turn-key on-orbit delivery.
Based on Orbital's STAR-2™ satellite bus, NSS-9 will carry 28 active C-band transponders and feature three beams that can be interconnected on a transponder-by-transponder basis: a global beam providing coverage of the entire earth visible from 183 degrees East, a West Hemi beam (covering Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, China, Korea and the Pacific Islands) and an East Hemi beam (providing coverage and connectivity to the U.S., Hawaii and Polynesia).

SPIRALE 1 [Astrium]
The DGA (French Government Armament Agency), Telecommunication and Information Programmes Department, has awarded EADS Astrium a contract for the design and production of a space based optical early warning system demonstrator.
EADS Astrium is the prime contractor for this 124 M Euros programme and will supply the alert and monitoring ground segment. Alcatel Space will develop the satellites whilst EADS Astrium will be responsible for satellite integration and in-orbit operations.
The demonstrator called SPIRALE (Systиme Prйparatoire Infra-Rouge pour l'Alerte) covers the supply and operation of a complete system able to collect and analyse infrared imagery against a land background, in order to detect ballistic missiles during their boost phase, just after launch. The space segment consists of two 120 kg class micro-satellites operating on an elliptical orbit, to be launched by Ariane-5 as secondary payloads in 2008.
This is the first demonstration of its kind to be conducted in Europe. It will pave the way for a future operational, early warning optical space programme. This will form a strategic link in an anti-ballistic missile defense system and will also contribute to other operational missions, such as proliferation monitoring.

Франция готова вывести на орбиту Земли два малых военных спутника в рамках программы раннего оповещения ракетной угрозы. Запуск космических аппаратов под названием «СПИРАЛЬ» (Spirale) состоится 12 февраля с космодрома Куру (Французская Гвинея).
Вес каждого спутника составляет 117 кг, длина 2,17 м. Они снабжены системой обработки инфракрасного изображения, при помощи которой будет собираться и анализироваться информация на предмет возможных запусков баллистических ракет.
Миссия аппаратов «СПИРАЛЬ» является подготовительным этапом масштабной программы по введению в действие системы обнаружения и раннего оповещения ракетных атак. Создание такой системы стало одним из приоритетов так называемой «Белой книги по вопросам обороны и безопасности Франции», одобренной в июне 2008 года.
Данные, которые будут получены со спутников «СПИРАЛЬ», позволят Франции приступить непосредственно к реализации проекта. Не исключено, что в нем примут участие другие европейские страны, сообщает ИТАР-ТАСС.

Paris, 15 May 2009 - The French Armament Procurement Agency (DGA) has confirmed to Astrium that it has accepted the Spirale space-based early warning system demonstrator.
Since it was placed into orbit in February, the Spirale system has acquired more than 300,000 images of the Earth in several infrared bands – images that have been processed at the ground warning station. Due to the wealth and variety of images taken and processed by the demonstrator, Spirale's contribution to our knowledge of natural phenomena has already proved decisive.
