It was decided this week that the launch would be rescheduled to January, thereby giving engineers sufficient time to analyze the trouble and develop a solution. In addition, the new plan will avoid ground crews working through a launch campaign over the holidays.
A new formal launch date has not been established, though officials are hoping for a mid-January opportunity.

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has delayed the planned Cape Canaveral launch next week of an advanced geosynchronous orbit Orion eavesdropping spacecraft on board a Boeing Delta IV Heavy booster.
The delay to mid January comes as the U.S. Air Force is troubleshooting problems with its Northrop/Grumman Defense Support Program (DSP) 23 spacecraft already positioned in a stationary orbit.
DSP ground controllers have lost at least some command and control capability due to a software or hardware failure on that satellite and NRO engineers want to make sure there is no commonality in software, hardware or operations that also could affect the electronic intelligence satellite.
Even before the DSP problems, the night launch had the NRO, U.S. Air Force and many intelligence professionals in the National Security Agency (NSA) worried.
This is because the NRO flight fundamentally involves America's biggest, most secret and expensive military spacecraft on board the world's largest rocket. The satellite had experienced delays even after arrival here at the Cape.
Liftoff of the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta IV Heavy carrying the highly upgraded Orion NROL-26 eavesdropping satellite had been set for Dec. 16-18 from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 37. The combined cost of the NROL-26 spacecraft and booster is upwards of $2 billion.
The 232-foot tall triple barreled oxygen/hydrogen powered booster will lift off on 2 million pounds of thrust from its three Pratt & Whitney RS-68 engines, then fly into geosynchronous orbit on a Pratt & Whitney RL10B-2 upper stage that includes French and Japanese hardware.
There is worry among intelligence professionals, however, because this will be the first flight of the upgraded Orion class, following three years of delays in getting this specific satellite built and launched. That has pushed the span of time to five years between the launch of the last NRO geosynchronous eavesdropper here and this modernized version.
However, two different smaller NRO eavesdropping spacecraft have been launched during this period on Delta IV Medium boosters fired from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. Those satellites do not park in a single location, but rather cycle up and down in highly elliptical orbits that climb and descend over the northern hemisphere. Like NROL-26, they too can pick up clandestine radio traffic, but monitor it from different aspect angles than the geosynchronous satellites.
Since the last geosynchronous eavesdropping mission here in 2003, NRO has been widely criticized for mismanagement of projects like its Future Imagery Architecture program, and the in orbit failure of the advanced USA 193 imaging satellite. That spacecraft launched from Vandenberg in December 2007 and died almost immediately after launch. It was then destroyed in orbit by a U.S. Navy missile to prevent its frozen ball of hydrazine propellant from harming anyone on the ground (Aerospace DAILY, Feb. 22).
The failure was caused by a software problem that an investigation found was in other military satellites also awaiting launch.
The NRO also continues to be criticized for a lack of imagination since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Top-Secret Mission To Launch Tuesday Night
A giant Delta IV Heavy rocket is scheduled to blast off next Tuesday night with a top-secret payload, and the Air Force today released a five-hour launch window that narrows in on the time the behemoth booster will be taking off.
Now nestled within its mobile service tower at Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the rocket will be thundering aloft between 7 p.m. and midnight Tuesday. All indications now are that the T-zero time will be not too long after the opening of that window -- possibly around 7:45 p.m. The Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office are expected to release the scheduled launch time on Monday.
The Delta IV Heavy will carry a classified payload into orbit for the NRO, the super-secret organization that owns and operates the nation's constellation of spy satellites.
Those include photo and radar reconnaissance satellites, electronic eavesdropping spacecraft, ocean surveillance satellites as well as orbiters that relay imagery and data back to Earth.

We'll be broadcasting live coverage from United Launch Alliance, a joint partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing that was formed to launch U.S. government satellites, including pyaloads for the NRO, the Department of Defense, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The launch coverage will begin about 25 minutes before liftoff and continue through the time the rocket's payload fairing is jettisoned. The NRO will not release any information on the status of the mission after that time, and there will be no pre-launch or post-launch news conferences.
The U.S. Air Force 45th Space Wing is warning mariners to stay out of a Launch Hazard Area off the coast of Cape Canaveral between 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials with the Air Force's Eastern Range will clear the area prior to launch to make certain mariners are not exposed to falling debris in the event of an explosive failure early in flight.
People entering the danger zone during between 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and 12:45 a.m. Wednesday can be fined up to $250,000 and jailed for up to six years.

Launch Time For Secret Mission To Be Released
An exact liftoff time for the planned launch Tuesday of a top-secret mission aboard a Delta IV Heavy rocket will be announced later today, but the weather forecast for flight is a bit iffy.
The United Launch Alliance rocket and a classified National Reconnaissance Office payload are slated to blast off from Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station between 7 p.m. Tuesday and midnight Wednesday.
The U.S. Air Force and the NRO are expected to release the T-zero time at 4 p.m. today, and we'll update The Flame Trench when the launch time is made public. We'll also have updates throughout the day Tuesday and webcast live video coverage of the launch beginning 25 minutes prior to liftoff.
Mission managers, meanwhile, will be keeping close tabs on the weather. Air Force meteorologists issued a forecast today that calls for a 60 percent chance that conditions will force a delay.

Top-Secret Mission Delayed Until Wednesday
The planned launch tonight of a Delta IV Heavy rocket and on a classified National Reconnaissance Office mission is being delayed 24 hours for yet-to-be-specified reasons.
The United Launch Alliance booster and its top-secret payload -- the first to be launched on a heavy version of the Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle, or EELV -- had been slated to blast off of Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:49 p.m. tonight. There would have been a four-hour launch window.
The launch is now being targeted for liftoff Wednesday night. The exact launch time is expected to be released later today.
The weather forecast for launch tonight had been iffy at best. The Air Force issued a forecast Monday that called for a 60 percent chance conditions would be too cloudy and windy to proceed with launch.

Today's planned launch of a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy has been rescheduled for 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, four minutes earlier than today's targeted time.
The launch was delayed after minor damage was discovered during overnight close-out inspections to spray-on foam insulation on an access door between the rocket's first and second stages, according to the U.S. Air Force's 45th Space Wing.
The insulation was repaired but needs time to harden and could not be ready for launch today.
The 7:45 p.m. targeted liftoff time from Launch Complex 37 opens a four-hour launch window.
Weather conditions are forecasted to be excellent, according to Air Force meteorologists, with only a 10 percent chance of conditions that are too windy.

Delta IV Heavy 90 Percent "Go" For Saturday
A top-secret national security mission is scheduled to get under way Saturday evening with the launch of a giant Delta 4 Heavy rocket at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and the weather looks as if it will be good enough to go.
The United Launch Alliance rocket is scheduled to blast off from launch Complex 37 at 7:33 p.m. EST, and the launch window Saturday will extend to 11:33 p.m.
The weather forecast for launch is excellent: Air Force Weather Officer Joel Tumbiolo says there is a 90 percent chance that conditions will be acceptable for launch. The prime concern will be ground winds and the possibility of thick clouds over the launch complex.

Live at the Cape: Launch On Hold Again
A United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket remains bolted to its launch pad after another hold in the countdown at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
The 24-story rocket was ready blast off at 8:13 p.m. -- about 40 minutes later than originally planned. A technical problem prompted a hold in the launch countdown about 70 seconds before liftoff. No new launch time has been established. We'll update the blog when a new launch time is set.
Liftoff had been set for 7:33 p.m. But a technical glitch kept the launch team from sending up the rocket at that time.

This was the first Delta IV Heavy mission for the NRO. Designated NROL-26, the mission is in support of national defense. This was the third Delta IV Heavy launch in Delta program history. A Delta IV Heavy demonstration flight occurred in December 2004, and the first Air Force operational mission was launched in November 2007.
"This first Delta IV Heavy launch for the NRO is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by the combined NRO, Air Force, supplier and ULA team," said Jim Sponnick, ULA Vice President, Delta Product Line. "We appreciate the support from our mission partners in achieving this milestone. ULA is pleased to contribute to our nation's security, and to continue our strong partnership with the NRO. We look forward to launching many more NRO missions on ULA's Delta IV Medium, Delta IV Heavy and Atlas V vehicles."
The ULA Delta IV Heavy vehicle featured a center common booster core with two strap-on common booster cores. Each common booster core was powered by the RS-68 cryogenic engine. An RL10B-2 cryogenic engine powered the second stage. Both engines are built by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. The payload was encased by a 5-meter diameter (16.7-foot diameter) aluminum, tri-sector payload fairing. ULA constructed the Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle in Decatur, Ala.
This was the first launch for ULA in 2009. ULA's next launch is NASA's NOAA-N Prime mission currently scheduled for Feb. 4, aboard a Delta II from Space Launch Complex-2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
ULA program management, engineering, test and mission support functions are headquartered in Denver, Colo. Manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are located at Decatur, Ala., Harlingen, Tex. and San Diego, Calif. Launch operations are located at Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla., and Vandenberg AFB, Calif.

А то при предыдущем запуске спутника DSP Delta IV Heavy была сильно не догружена. Всё-таки спутник массой 2,5 тонны на геостационаре маловат для такой ракеты.

DSP-23 был в предыдущем запуске 11 ноября 2007 года. Масса его 2386 кг. Для такой ракеты явно мало.
Delta IV Heavy способно вывести непосредственно на геостационарную орбиту 6000 кг. Вот поэтому я и интересуюсь массой новичка.

Старт состоялся 18 января в 05:47 по московскому времени.
В официальном сообщении говорится, что новый аппарат расширит возможности США по прослушиванию коммуникаций в отношении враждебных правительств, таких как Иран, а также террористических организаций, таких как Аль-Каида.
По словам независимых военных экспертов, данный аппарат будет в числе прочих предоставлять сведения для Пентагона и ЦРУ, а эти ведомства в дальнейшем будут решать как распоряжаться информацией. Неофициально в военных кругах Штатов космические аппараты, аналогичные запущенному в воскресенье, называют "гигантскими наблюдателями". За последние 2,5 года со стартовой площадки во Флориде также были запущены несколько более мелких спутников при помощи ракеты Delta 4-medium. В минувшее воскресенье США с космодрома на мысе Канаверал была запущена тяжелая ракета-носитель Delta-4 c новым 5-тонным военным спутником NROL-26, который, как сообщили в Национальном разведывательном управлении США, уже вышел на заданную орбиту и развернул свою основную антенну. Старт состоялся 18 января в 05:47 по московскому времени.
Что-то меня терзают сомнения по поводу развёртывания антенны: ещё не выведен в точку, а уже раскрыли антенну (д.107м)?. Ваши предположения? Что там оптическая разведка видит?

Я подозреваю что кто-то решил подколоть cybersecurity и подсунул им утку.

Спутник давно уже найден, ползет примерно над 80°в.д. на запад и изумляет наблюдателей фантастическим блеском -- +4.5 и +6 прямо со стационара, нехило? А ступень на орбите увода резво мотыляет вокруг шарика, только кому она нужна?
