WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. -- An Alliant Tech Systems suborbital rocket
carrying two NASA hypersonic experiments was destroyed shortly after
liftoff from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia Friday. No
injuries or property damage were immediately reported.

Most debris from the rocket is thought to have fallen in the Atlantic
Ocean. However, there are conflicting reports of debris being sighted
on land. This debris could be hazardous. People who think they may
have encountered rocket debris are advised not to touch it and to
report it to the Wallops Emergency Operations Center at 757-824-1300.

NASA is very disappointed in this failure but has directed its focus
on protecting public safety and conducting a comprehensive
investigation to identify the root cause. NASA is assembling a
multidiscipline team, along with the rocket's maker Alliant Tech
Systems, or ATK, of Salt Lake City, to begin the investigation
promptly.

The exact launch time was 5:10 a.m. EDT. The anomaly that caused the
failure occurred approximately 27 seconds into flight and is not
known.
Судя по времени полета - сошла с курса и сама подорвалась.
Надеюсь видео покажут, 27 сек это еще в зоне видимости. :)

ЦитироватьNASA lost $17 million worth of experiments and effort when a rocket had to be destroyed during liftoff from Wallops Island Friday morning. The cost of the rocket was not released.

During a teleconference, a spokesman for Alliant Techsystems, which was testing its first launch vehicle, said the rocket lifted off as planned, but instead of following its planned path, it continued south. It was destroyed by launch controllers about 27 seconds after liftoff.

Aug 25, 2008

By Frank Morring, Jr./Aerospace Daily and Defense Report

Rigorous trajectory requirements for a pair of NASA aeronautics experiments probably contributed to a loss of control that forced range-safety destruction of the experimental Alliant Techsystems ALV-X1 launcher early Aug. 22.

Kent Rominger, vice president for advanced programs at ATK, said the "very unique and demanding" trajectory imposed by the Hypersonic Boundary Layer Transition (HyBolt) experiment and the Sub-Orbital Aerodynamic Re-entry Experiment (SOAREX) may have overtaxed vehicle control systems.

"We flew a trajectory that anybody else stays away from," Rominger said. "The dynamic pressures were sixfold that of what some space vehicles see, that being the space shuttle... When you try to meet a trajectory like that you do innovative things to control systems and electronics. That's how it differs from a vehicle that's trying to do quite the opposite, which is get up out of the atmosphere... We intended to stay down in the atmosphere where we could have high dynamic pressures and look at the Reynolds numbers that HyBolt needed."

Range safety officers destroyed the suborbital mission after it veered south from Wallops Flight Facility, Va., and reached the edge of a safety zone that allowed the vehicle to go no more than 16 degrees off its nominal course. At the time - between 20 and 27 sec. after liftoff - the two-stage solid-fuel rocket had reached an altitude of 11,000 to 12,000 feet, according to a spokesman for the NASA facility on a barrier island near Chincoteague, Va.

Launch on what was to have been a 1,000-mile flight downrange occurred at 5:10 a.m. EDT. While no injuries or property damage was been reported, NASA said there were eyewitness reports of debris striking land, and one local news outlet received a report of a brush fire set by debris on an offshore island.

Part of NASA's Fundamental Aeronautics Program, HyBolt was designed at Langley Research Center to study boundary layer heating. Researchers at Ames Research Center built SOAREX to obtain basic aerophysics data for advanced planetary probes, with the goal of streamlining entry, descent and landing (EDL) payloads for future Mars missions.

Together those payloads cost NASA about $17 million, including development, integration and range costs. Rominger said ATK built the ALV-X1 launcher as a testbed for other launch vehicle programs, and termed its cost proprietary.

A third payload - the Naval Research Laboratory's Melonsat - was designed to test a GPS-based automatic identification receiver and transmitter system built for ocean recovery. The foam-filled sphere was designed to continue transmitting its coordinates for seven days, but an NRL spokesman said Aug. 22 it was too soon to tell if the experiment survived the range-safety destruct. ATK cites tight trajectory requirements for two NASA aeronautics experiments in range-safety destruction.

The failure marks the second time a vehicle making its first flight failed after leaving Wallops Island. On Oct. 23, 1995, the Conestoga commercial launch vehicle came apart 46 seconds after liftoff in an uncommanded self-destruct that was believed to have been caused by loss of hydraulic fluid for the control system.

Despite the reports of ALV-X1 debris striking land, the Wallops spokesman stressed that the Virginia range is safe for testing new vehicles.

"It's a very undeveloped area, and that's one of the reasons that we're here," he said.
