Following the launch of the Soviet Sputnik I on 4 October 1957, ABMA was directed to proceed with the launching of a satellite using the Jupiter C, which had already been flight tested in nose cone re-entry tests for the Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM). Working closely together, ABMA and JPL completed the job of modifying the Jupiter C and building the Explorer I in 84 days.
Once in orbit, the cosmic ray equipment of Explorer I indicated a much lower cosmic ray count than had been anticipated. Dr. Van Allen theorized that the equipment may have been saturated by very strong caused by the existence of a belt of charged particles trapped in space by the earth's magnetic field. The existence of these Van Allen Belts, discovered by Explorer I, was confirmed by Explorer III, which was launched by a Jupiter C on 26 March 1958.
The discovery of the Van Allen Belts by the Explorer satellites was considered to be one of the outstanding discoveries of the International Geophysical Year.

... Two of the fine wires in the Explorer's meteor-detecting grids have been broken, presumably by micrometeorites. The microphone inside the satellite also picked up the impact of an object against the satellite's skin.
The temperature inside the Explorer has been fairly moderate in spite of the contrast between the heat of sunlight and the intense cold in the shadow of the earth. It has ranged from 50° to 85° F., about the spread of temperature of an average spring day in the Southwest.
Cosmic ray intensity, the third space factor observed by the Explorer, is harder to interpret. Apparently the average increase above the intensity at the surface of the earth—twelve times—is about what was expected. More interesting are hints that cosmic rays in space may fluctuate considerably with time, and vary from place to place. Dr. James Van Allen of the University of Iowa says that a radio station in Tokyo that was picking up the satellite's signals last week noted a sudden increase in cosmic rays to as much as five times above normal....

А что там вспоминать? Тем более, что судя по некоторым "источникам", кроме американцев никто в космос не летал и не летает.
Вспоминать и поминать добрым словом надо. Тем более, что и роверы, и Messinger, и Phoenics, и многое другое с чем можно американских коллег поздравлять растут от Explorer-a.

А ведь для меня увлечение космонавтикой началось с советских марок 1978-79 годов и с шокирующего взрыва "Челенджера" в 1986 г.
(До 13 лет думал, что летают только наши, а в 86-м просто как озарение, мы не одни туда!!! и у них тоже есть!!! и идут в ногу в покарении!!! и даже обгоняют нас!!! и к сожелению мы отстаем...).

Что-то не шибко громко у нас отмечался наш праздник.
50 лет первому спутнику - как-то скромно прошло. Я в С-Петербурге 04.10.2007 был в музее космонавтики расположненный в Петропавловской крепости. Днем, за час было меньше десяти человек и скромная экспозиция которую уже лет 10 не обновляют.
Может в апреле 2011 будет несколько иное?

Будет. Когда на новой технике летать начнём и новые задачи в космосе решать. Ох, не дождаться этого никак...
