TRACERS
NASA's Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) mission, consisting of two identical satellites that will orbit Earth in tandem (one following the other), will help understand magnetic reconnection and its effects in Earth's atmosphere. Magnetic reconnection occurs when activity from the Sun interacts with Earth's magnetic field. By understanding this process, scientists will be able to better understand and prepare for impacts of solar activity on Earth.

NASA's TRACERS spacecraft have arrived at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Next destination: space! 🚀
TRACERS (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) are a pair of spacecraft that will orbit Earth to study magnetic reconnection — those sudden, spark-like moments when Earth's magnetic field links up with the Sun's. During reconnection events, solar particles and energy pour into our atmosphere, providing the power that ignites auroras and drives space weather on Earth.

ЦитироватьNASA's TRACERS Mission Launches to Study Earth's Magnetic Shield
NASA's newest mission, TRACERS, soon will begin studying how Earth's magnetic shield protects our planet from the effects of space weather. Short for Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites, the twin TRACERS spacecraft lifted off at 11:13 a.m. PDT (2:13 p.m. EDT) Wednesday aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Riding along with TRACERS aboard the Falcon 9 were NASA's Athena EPIC (Economical Payload Integration Cost), PExT (Polylingual Experimental Terminal), and REAL (Relativistic Electron Atmospheric Loss) missions – three small satellites to demonstrate new technologies and gather scientific data. These three missions were successfully deployed, and mission controllers will work to contact them over the coming hours and days.
Ground controllers for the TRACERS mission established communications with the second of the two spacecraft at 3:43 p.m. PDT (6:43 p.m. EDT), about 3 hours after it separated from the rocket. During the next four weeks, TRACERS will undergo a commissioning period during which mission controllers will check out their instruments and systems.
Once cleared, the twin satellites will begin their 12-month prime mission to study a process called magnetic reconnection, answering key questions about how it shapes the impacts of the Sun and space weather on our daily lives.
Сообщают об установлении связи со вторым из двух TRACERS.

Following a successful launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, NASA's Athena EPIC (Economical Payload Integration Cost) satellite was deployed on July 23. However, the small satellite has yet to send an expected beacon signal to help track its orbit.
Mission partners are collaborating at the NovaWurks data operations center in California to link with the satellite on each orbital pass. Teams are investigating received signals to positively confirm the location of Athena EPIC and its operational status. The team is also working to determine the cause of the initial missed signal acquisition and any factors that may have contributed to the delayed communication downlinks.
Athena EPIC is a pathfinder launch for a scalable satellite design to support future missions through partnerships. The U.S. Space Force and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are government partners for the test launch along with Athena EPIC's industry partner NovaWurks.

Teams for NASA's TRACERS (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) mission, which launched on July 23, are continuing recovery efforts for one satellite, called Space Vehicle 1 (SV1). The other satellite, called Space Vehicle 2 (SV2), remains in good health and has started the commissioning process.
An issue with the power subsystem on July 25 resulted in intermittent contacts and a loss of communication with SV1. Indications from earlier data suggest the spacecraft can only be active when it is receiving adequate power through its solar panels. Because of the spacecraft's current orientation, the next opportunity to reestablish contact and implement further recovery steps is later in August, when SV1's solar panels will receive more sunlight. The team is reviewing data collected from the spacecraft to diagnose and determine next steps. Following any contact with the spacecraft, the team will assess status and any impact to the mission's science goals.
The SV2 spacecraft is operational, and the commissioning for the spacecraft and instruments are progressing as expected. NASA anticipates completing commissioning for SV2 by the end of August.
The TRACERS mission launched to study magnetic reconnection and its effects in Earth's atmosphere. Magnetic reconnection occurs when activity from the Sun interacts with Earth's magnetic field. By understanding this process, scientists will be able to better understand and prepare for impacts of solar activity on Earth.
No significant updates on SV1 are expected for a few weeks. NASA will provide these updates at:

Они могут не только вызывать полярные сияния, которыми можно любоваться вечно, но и нарушать работу GPS, спутников и энергосетей. Миссия TRACERS поможет исследовать, как солнечный ветер взаимодействует с магнитосферой Земли и влияет на устойчивость современных технических систем — от навигации до связи и электроснабжения.
