Originally intended to launch on the Russian Soyuz launch vehicle, due to geopolitical factors this is no longer an option. CNES & DGA instead opted to launch aboard Ariane 62.

Mission Details
CSO-3
The French CSO (Composante Spatiale Optique) high-resolution reconnaissance satellites are the optical space component of the MUSIS program that will replace the current Hélios 2 military observation satellites.
CNES, the French space agency, has notified Astrium that the DGA (Direction Générale de l'Armement), the French arms procurement agency, has awarded the company a 795€ million contract for two satellites for the CSO program. The contract also includes an option for a third satellite.
As the prime contractor for the CSO satellites programme, Astrium will provide the agile platform and avionics, and will also be responsible for the integration work, testing, and delivery of the satellites to CNES. Thales Alenia Space will provide Astrium with very high-resolution optical instruments.

With this launch in support of French defense and the capability requirements of several partner nations, Arianespace will guarantee independent access to space for France and Europe, for the benefit of all our fellow citizens."

CSO-3 is the third satellite in the DGA-led MUSIS program (Multinational Space-based Imaging System), a constellation of three satellites dedicated to Earth observation for defense and security purposes...

The 2nd Ariane 6 launch, VA263, carrying the French CSO-3 spy satellite has been scrubbed for today. Arianespace has not yet provided an update why, however the "Ensemble De Lancement" (launchpad) turned red on the status panel shortly before the scrub was called.

Москва. 6 марта. INTERFAX.RU - Ракета Ariane 6 в четверг стартовала на орбиту с французским разведывательным спутником CSO-3 Космического командования вооруженных сил страны, сообщила компания-разработчик носителя Arianespace.

Запуск двухступенчатой ракеты был осуществлен с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане в 17:24 по парижскому времени (в 19:24 по Москве).

Спутник оптико-электронной разведки CSO-3 массой 3,5 тонн станет третьим во французской орбитальной группировке аналогичных аппаратов. Первые два из них были запущены в 2018 и 2020 годах с помощью российских ракет "Союз".

Новый аппарат разместится на солнечно-синхронной орбите высотой 800 км.

Предполагается, что Франция будет делиться изображениями, полученными CSO-3, с вооруженными силами Германии и Бельгии, которые инвестировали в создание спутников.

Ракета семейства Ariane 6 является новым носителем, разработанным компанией Arianespace. В июле прошлого года она совершила свой первый тестовый полет, придя на смену ракете Ariane 5.

В текущем году планируется осуществить пять запусков этой новой ракеты.

Ariane 62 - легкая ракета, оснащенная двумя твердотопливными ускорителями и предназначена для вывода небольших по массе спутников.

В тяжелой версии - Ariane 64 - ракета оснащается четырьмя ускорителями и предназначена для вывода на орбиту крупных спутников научного и военного назначения.
