SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean geostationary environmental monitoring satellite that can closely check the movement of fine dust and ocean conditions is being moved to French Guiana ahead of its launch, the government said Sunday.

The 3.4-ton Chollian-2B, scheduled to be sent into orbit on Feb. 19, has been placed in a specially built non-vibration shipping container in Daejeon, 164 kilometers south of Seoul, where it was built by the state-run Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the Ministry of Science and ICT said.

The satellite will first be moved to Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, and then flown to the Guiana Space Centre in South America on a cargo plane.

"On arrival at Kourou, South Korean engineers will carefully inspect the satellite to make certain all of its systems are in working order and were not damaged during the shipment," the ministry said. After this, it will be placed on top of the Ariane-5 space vehicle that will take it into space.

Once it reaches the designated altitude of 35,786 kilometers from the Earth's equator and goes into a fixed orbit at 128.2 degrees longitude, it will carry out initial operations for a few months before sending real-time data on ocean conditions in October. This will be followed by atmospheric information on East Asia starting in 2021.

Chollian-2B, unveiled in December, is the first geostationary satellite in the world that is able to continuously check fine dust and other air pollutants.

KARI said it has a Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), to observe and track fine dust and various other pollutants with the cutting edge Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-2 (GOCI-2), permitting it to check for algal blooms and other water contaminants.

"The equipment on board will make it possible for Seoul to acquire important information it can share with other countries that can further advance space-related cooperation," the science ministry said.

The government allocated 386.7 billion won (US$331.2 million) to the Chollian-2B project, which began in 2011, with the ministry expecting the life cycle of the satellite to be 10 years.

JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B are prepared for their Ariane 5 launch to geostationary transfer orbit

The two satellite passengers for Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission – scheduled for liftoff in February – are advancing through their pre-flight preparations during parallel activity in French Guiana.

During activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility, JCSAT-17 is raised to the vertical position for removal from its protective shipping container (at left), while GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is installed on a dolly for its pre-launch preparations (photo, right).

Riding in the upper position of Ariane 5's dual-payload dispenser system will be JCSAT-17. This is a telecommunications satellite for SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, built by Lockheed Martin. Based on the A2100 platform, the spacecraft's main coverage zone will be Eastern Asia, including Japan.

South Korea's GEO-KOMPSAT-2B – produced by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) – will be deployed as the mission's second passenger from Ariane 5's lower payload position. Once in orbit, it will be used primarily for ocean and Earth environmental monitoring.

Both spacecraft, which will be deployed in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) during the Arianespace mission, are undergoing their preparation activity in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility.

Continuing the launch cadence

The launch of JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is designated Flight VA252 in Arianespace's mission numbering system – signifying the 252nd liftoff of an Ariane-series vehicle from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.

As Arianespace's second launch in 2020 from the Spaceport, Flight VA252 follows the company's year-opening Ariane 5 success performed on January 16 – which delivered the EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 satellites into GTO.

Arianespace is targeting a record mission count in 2020 – with up to 12 opportunities identified from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana using Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega; along with the maiden flights of the Ariane 6 and Vega C launch vehicles. Additionally, eight more Arianespace missions are possible from the cosmodromes at Baikonur and Vostochny.

Payload integration begins for Arianespace's next dual-payload Ariane 5 mission

The payload integration process has begun for Arianespace's upcoming Ariane 5 mission, which will place the JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B satellites in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) during a nighttime launch from the Spaceport in French Guiana on February 18.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B underwent its pre-launch fueling process in Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility, and has been transferred to the Ariane 5's Final Assembly Building for integration on the launcher.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is "topped off" in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility, readying the KARI-built satellite for its integration on Ariane 5.

Produced by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be installed in Ariane 5's lower payload position, to be deployed as the second passenger during this mission.

After arriving at its operational slot in geostationary orbit, the spacecraft will be used primarily for monitoring the ocean and the Earth's environment.

The mission's other passenger, JCSAT-17, will ride in the upper position on Ariane 5. Built by Lockheed Martin for operation by Japan's SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, it will deliver telecommunications services across a coverage zone that includes Japan and areas extending 200 nautical miles from the coast

Building upon success

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 launch with JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is designated Flight VA252 in Arianespace's numbering system, signifying the 252nd mission with an Ariane-series launcher. It will be Arianespace's second Ariane 5 flight in 2020 from the Spaceport, following the January 16 success that delivered the EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 satellites to GTO.

Arianespace's fast-paced launch cadence for 2020 also included a medium-lift mission with Soyuz from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which was conducted with its Starsem affiliate on February 7 to deploy 34 satellites for OneWeb's next-generation constellation.

Flight VA252: Arianespace at the service of SKY Perfect JSAT (Japan) and KARI (Korea) with JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B.

For its third flight of 2020, Arianespace will orbit two telecommunications satellites using an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guiana Space Center: JCSAT-17 for the Japanese operator SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation; and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B for Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

With this mission dedicated to space applications for telecommunications and environment monitoring, Arianespace once again contributes to the improvement of life on Earth.

Flight VA252 will be performed from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, February 14, 2020 in Kourou to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

JCSAT-17 will be the 21st SKY Perfect JSAT satellite to be launched by Arianespace. This geostationary communications satellite will deliver flexible, high-bandwidth communications to users in Japan and the surrounding region.

JCSAT-17 payloads incorporates S-band, C-band and Ku-band transponders, which will provide satellite communication services. The S-band and C-band transponders will serve NTT DOCOMO, Inc., the largest telecommunications company in Japan, for its flexible mobile communications services in Japan and the surrounding region under IRU contract (Indefeasible Right of Use). SKY Perfect JSAT will support NTT DOCOMO's satellite communication services.

JCSAT-17 will also be the 32nd satellite launched by Arianespace for Japan.

Built by Lockheed Martin Space, JCSAT-17 will be the 47th satellite made by this manufacturer to be launched by Arianespace.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be KARI's second satellite as a manufacturer – and its third as a client – to be launched by Arianespace.

The GEO-KOMPSAT-2 program is a national program of the Korean government to develop and operate two civilian geostationary satellites: GEO-KOMPSAT-2A for meteorological and space weather monitoring missions; and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B for Earth environment monitoring and ocean monitoring missions. The GEO-KOMPSAT 2 program also ensures the succession for the COMS program (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite).

The predecessor satellite, GEO-KOMPSAT-2A, was successfully launched by Arianespace in December 2018.

The satellite carries two main payloads: GOCI II (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager II), provided by Airbus Defence and Space; and the GEMS (Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer), provided by Ball Aerospace & Technologies.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be the eighth satellite launched by Arianespace for South Korea.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's next flight is now fully-assembled following the integration of its two satellite passengers – SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation's JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B for the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) – marking a key milestone in preparations for the February 18 mission to geostationary transfer orbit.

Encapsulated in the ogive-shaped protective fairing, JCSAT-17 has been positioned atop GEO-KOMPSAT-2B – which was installed on the launcher's cryogenic core stage during previous activity inside the Ariane 5 Final Assembly Building at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

These successive integration steps enable a new series of preparation milestones to begin. They include the launch readiness review on February 14, which is to be followed three days later by Ariane 5's rollout to the ELA-3 launch zone.

Liftoff is scheduled during a 1-hr., 2-min. launch window opening February 18 at 7:18 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with the two spacecraft to be deployed during a flight lasting 31 minutes.

Ariane 5 will deliver a total payload lift performance of more than 10,200 kg. during the mission – with this combined mass factoring in JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, plus the launch vehicle's dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

A dual-passenger delivery for Ariane 5

JCSAT-17 will be the 21st satellite for SKY Perfect JSAT to be launched by Arianespace. This geostationary-orbit communications platform is designed to deliver flexible, high-bandwidth communications for users in Japan and the surrounding region. Lockheed Martin produced the spacecraft using its LM 2100™ spacecraft bus.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B will be operated as part of Korea's GEO-KOMPSAT-2 program, and is to perform Earth environment monitoring and ocean monitoring duties. This spacecraft was manufactured by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and will be the organization's second satellite as a manufacturer – and its third as a client – to be orbited by Arianespace.

February 18's mission is designated Flight VA252 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, signifying the 252nd use of an Ariane-series launch vehicle. The heavy-lift Ariane 5 launcher is delivered to Arianespace by ArianeGroup as the production prime contractor.

Launch readiness confirmed: Approval is given for Arianespace's Ariane 5 flight on February 18

Arianespace's dual-payload mission with satellites to serve Japan and South Korea – JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, respectively – has been approved for next week's launch fr om the Spaceport in French Guiana.

The February 18 liftoff was authorized at the completion of today's launch readiness review, which confirmed the status of Ariane 5, its two passengers, the Spaceport's infrastructure, and a network of ground station's that will track the launcher's trajectory.

With this go-ahead, Ariane 5 will be transferred Monday (February 17) from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone. This will position it for liftoff the following day during a launch window that opens at 7:18 p.m. and continues until 8:20 p.m. (local time in French Guiana).

Ariane 5 "by the numbers"

The upcoming mission is designated Flight VA252 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, notating the 252nd Ariane launch since this series of European-built vehicles began operation in 1979. ArianeGroup is the Ariane 5's production prime contractor.

Next week's mission also will mark the 108th launch of a heavy-lift Ariane 5 from French Guiana, wh ere the vehicle is operated alongside Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega.

The sequence for launch success

Ariane 5 will deliver a lift performance of more than 10,200 kg. on the February 18 mission to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). This total includes the JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B satellite passengers, and also factors in the launcher's dual-payload deployment system and integration hardware.

SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation's JCSAT-17 – produced by Lockheed Martin – will ride in the upper position of Ariane 5's payload arrangement, to be deployed first during the 31-min. flight sequence. It will deliver flexible, high-bandwidth communications for users in Japan and the surrounding region from an orbital position at 136 deg. East.

Located below JCSAT-17 in the launcher payload arrangement is GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, which was developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). It was designed to conduct Earth environment monitoring and ocean monitoring missions, and will be stationed at the 128.2 deg. East orbital location.

The Ariane 5 that will lift off on Arianespace's Flight VA252 nears completion of its transfer fr om the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, Ariane 5 was transferred from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere payload integration occurred – to the dedicated ELA-3 launch complex. The heavy-lift vehicle is delivered to Arianespace by ArianeGroup as production prime contractor.

With this rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for a February 18 liftoff at the start of a 1-hr., 2-min. launch window opening at 7:18 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Tomorrow's mission is designated Flight VA252, and has an estimated payload performance of 10,109 kg. – a total that factors in the liftoff mass of its JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B spacecraft passengers, plus the dual-satellite dispenser system and integration hardware. Both passengers are to be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit during a 31-min. flight sequence.

Riding in Ariane 5's upper passenger position is SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation's JCSAT-17, built by Lockheed Martin Space. This relay platform is designed to deliver flexible, high-bandwidth communications for users in Japan and the surrounding region from an orbital position at 136 deg. East.

A European-built Ariane 5 rocket is poised for launch Tuesday with a U.S.-made communications satellite for Tokyo-based Sky Perfect JSAT and a South Korean environmental observatory.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 launcher is scheduled to take off fr om the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, during a 62-minute launch window opening at 5:18 p.m. EST (2218 GMT; 6:18 p.m. French Guiana time).

The Ariane 5 rolled out of its final assembly building for a 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) journey to the ELA-3 launch zone at the European-run spaceport Monday.

After arriving on the pad, teams configured the nearly 180-foot-tall (54.8-meter) rocket for Tuesday's countdown.

The Ariane 5 will loft the JCSAT 17 and GEO-Kompsat 2B satellites on a half-hour mission into geostationary transfer orbit, an elliptical, or oval-shaped, trajectory around Earth ranging in altitude between 155 miles (250 kilometers) and 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers), with an inclination of 6 degrees to the equator.

The satellites will use their own engines to reach a circular geostationary orbit over the equator, wh ere their speeds will match the rate of Earth's rotation, giving the spacecraft fixed geographic coverage zones over the Asia-Pacific.

The JCSAT 17 spacecraft was built by Lockheed Martin and weighs 12,912 pounds (5,857 kilograms) fully fueled for launch.

Designed for a 15-year mission, JCSAT 17 is owned by Sky Perfect JSAT, a Tokyo-based company. Once in orbit, the new satellite will unfurl a 59-foot-diameter (18-meter) S-band mesh communications antenna made by L3Harris Technologies, formerly known as Harris Corp., of Melbourne, Florida.

JCSAT 17 carries S-band, C-band and Ku-band transponders to provide data connectivity and broadcast services over Japan and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

The S-band and C-band payloads on JCSAT 17 will be used by NTT Docomo, a Japanese mobile phone company, to provide mobile connectivity across Japan and surrounding regions, according to Sky Perfect JSAT.

JCSAT 17 will ride in the upper position in the Ariane 5's dual-payload fairing. The smaller GEO-Kompsat 2B oceanography satellite for South Korea is awaiting launch in the lower berth.

The 7,449-pound (3,379-kilogram) GEO-Kompsat 2B spacecraft, built and owned by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, carries instruments to monitor the environment and oceans across the Asia-Pacific region.

The South Korean-built spacecraft hosts two sensors -- a European-built ocean color imager and a U.S.-made spectrometer -- to collect environmental data.

The GEO-Kompsat 2B satellite is designed to operate at least 10 years, collecting information on marine environments around the Korean Peninsula, fishery ecosystems, aerosol transport in the atmosphere, and air quality over Korea.

The GEO-Kompsat 2B mission follows the launch of GEO-Kompsat 2A on an Ariane 5 rocket in 2018. While GEO-Kompsat 2B is focused on observing the oceans and environment, the GEO-Kompsat 2A spacecraft is a dedicated weather satellite providing information to South Korean forecasters.

The countdown officially commenced at 1055 GMT (5:55 a.m. EST), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2218 GMT (5:18 p.m. EST; 7:18 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends for 62 minutes.

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 began at 1145 GMT (6:45 a.m. EST).

Workers also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for today's launch was also be loaded into the rocket's computer.

After a weather status report, the launch team began the process to fuel the rocket shortly with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1740 GMT (12:40 p.m. EST). First, ground reservoirs and the rocket's helium tank were pressurized, then the fuel lines were chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It was expected to take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage commenced at 1850 GMT (1:50 p.m. EST).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine began at 1900 GMT (2 p.m. EST), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is planned at 2103 GMT (4:03 p.m. EST).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison nearly two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers -- at Plus+3 minutes, 21 seconds. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 39 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 6 degrees.

The release of the JCSAT 17 satellite will come first at Plus+27 minutes, 40 seconds.

Once JCSAT 17 is deployed, the Ariane 5 rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned at Plus+29 minutes, 21 seconds.

GEO-Kompsat 2B will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 31 minutes, 9 seconds.

Вашингтон. 19 февраля. ИНТЕРФАКС - Ракета-носитель Ariane 5 тяжелого класса Европейского космического агентства в среду должна стартовать на орбиту с японским и южнокорейским спутниками, сообщает французская компания-оператор Arianespace.

Запуск ракеты-носителя Ariane 5 планируется осуществить с космодрома Куру во французской Гвиане в Южной Америке в 01:18 мск.

В рамках миссии на геостационарную орбиту будут выведены японский спутник связи JCSAT 17 и южнокорейский океанографический спутник GEO-KOMPSAT-2B с перигеем 250 км и апогеем 35786 км.

Это уже третий коммерческий запуск компании Arianespace с начала года.

Minus-40 minutes. The Ariane 5's first and second stages are fully loaded loaded with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Ariane Group's facility in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Ariane Group in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Flight VA252: Ariane 5 lifts off from French Guiana

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launcher has lifted off from the Spaceport in French Guiana carrying JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B – which will be deployed during a sequence lasting 31 minutes from liftoff to final separation.

Payload lift performance for today's mission to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) – designated Flight VA252 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – is estimated at 10,109 kg. This total includes the two satellite passengers, plus the workhorse vehicle's dual-payload deployment system and integration hardware.

Arianespace's Ariane 5 soars to success with JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B

Satellites for two operators based in the Asia-Pacific region – Japan's SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) – were successfully deployed to geostationary transfer orbit on Arianespace's latest Ariane 5 mission.

Lifting off from the Spaceport in French Guiana, today's flight delivered an estimated payload lift performance of 10,109 kg. JCSAT-17 was released first, separating from Ariane 5 at 27 minutes after liftoff; followed four minutes later by its GEO-KOMPSAT-2B co-passenger.

The numbers add up with latest success

"For the second Ariane 5 launch of the year, our heavyweight vehicle has performed flawlessly once again," said Luce Fabreguettes, Arianespace Executive Vice President Missions, Operations & Purchasing, in her post-flight comments. "Congratulations to all the operational and support teams for a job well done!"

Designated Flight VA252, today's mission was the 252nd launch of an Ariane-series vehicle since 1979, and the 108th using Ariane 5 – which is delivered to Arianespace by ArianeGroup as production prime contractor.

Flight VA252 also was Arianespace's second Ariane 5 flight in 2020 from the Spaceport, following the January 16 success that delivered the EUTELSAT KONNECT and GSAT-30 satellites to GTO. As the company's third mission overall this year, it also follows the February 7 Soyuz mission carrying 34 OneWeb constellation satellites – which originated from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The journey begins

Released from Ariane 5's upper payload position, JCSAT-17 is the 20th satellite orbited by Arianespace for Tokyo-based SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation – which is a leader in space-based broadcasting and communications.

JCSAT-17 was produced by Lockheed Martin Space using the company's LM 2100™ spacecraft bus. It incorporates S-band, C-band and Ku-band transponders to deliver flexible, high-bandwidth communications for users in Japan and the surrounding region from an orbital position at 136 deg. East.

The lower passenger in Ariane 5's dual-payload configuration was GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, which marks the second satellite Arianespace has launched for KARI as a manufacturer – and its third as a customer. Designed to conduct Earth environment monitoring and ocean monitoring missions as part of Korea's GEO-KOMPSAT-2 program, it will be stationed at the 128.2 deg. East orbital location.

Contributing to a record year of launches

Arianespace is targeting a record mission count in 2020 – with up to 12 opportunities identified from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana using Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega; along with the maiden flights of Ariane 6 and Vega C; plus eight more from the cosmodromes at Baikonur and Vostochny.

Arianespace orbits two satellites – JCSAT-17 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B – to support connectivity and environmental monitoring in Asia

On Tuesday, February 18 at 22:18 UTC (Universal Time Coordinates), Arianespace successfully launched two satellites using an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America): JCSAT-17 for the Japanese operator SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B for the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

Today's launch follows the successful missions of Ariane 5 on January 16 from Kourou, French Guiana, and Soyuz on February 7 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. In one month, Arianespace has launched a total of 38 satellites. Three more launches are scheduled in March from the space centers in French Guiana (utilizing one Soyuz and a Vega launcher) and Kazakhstan (with Soyuz).

Arianespace, the benchmark launch provider in Japan for communications satellites

JCSAT-17 is the 20th satellite orbited by Arianespace for SKY Perfect JSAT, a leader in space-based broadcasting and communications, which includes the most recent launch of DSN-1/Superbird-8 in April 2018. The Japanese operator broadcasts pay TV packages and supplies communications services via satellite, as well as a wide range of entertainment programming via its SKY PerfecTV! platform – the largest in Japan.

The JCSAT-17 geostationary satellite will offer flexible broadband communications services to users in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. Its payload includes S-, C- and Ku-band transponders. The S and C-band transponders will be used by NTT DOCOMO, Inc., the largest telecommunications company in Japan. With the support of SKY Perfect JSAT, NTT DOCOMO will offer flexible mobile communications services in Japan and surrounding areas, based on an indefeasible right of use (IRU) contract.

Built by Lockheed Martin Space, JCSAT-17 is the 47th satellite from this manufacturer to be launched by Arianespace.

With this latest success Arianespace continues to strengthen its exceptional partnership with SKY Perfect JSAT, a relationship that reaches back to JCSAT-1, launched in 1989.

Arianespace has operated in Japan for over 30 years, since opening an office in Tokyo in 1986. The relationship of mutual trust established with Japanese operators and public authorities has enabled Arianespace to win 34 of the 47 launch contracts open to competition, giving it a 70% share of the Japanese open market for commercial geostationary satellites.

Arianespace partners with South Korea to support the country's ambitious space program

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is the eighth satellite launched by Arianespace for South Korea.

In fact, since the launch of the first Korean satellites – KITSAT-1A in 1992 and KITSAT-2 in 1993 utilizing Ariane 4 launch vehicles – Arianespace has built a long-term partnership with public and private actors for the Korean government's space program, as well as within the framework of a fruitful collaboration with the national operator of satellites – kt sat – for commercial telecommunications.
GEO-KOMPSAT-2B is the third KARI satellite to be launched by Arianespace, following the multi-mission COMS (Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite) in 2010 and GEO-KOMPSAT-2A in 2018 – both orbited by Ariane 5.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2B has two main payloads: GOCI II (Geostationary Ocean Color Image), supplied by Airbus Defence and Space; and GEMS (Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer), supplied by Ball Aerospace & Technologies.

GEO-KOMPSAT-2 is a South Korean government program to develop and operate two geostationary satellites for civil applications: GEO-KOMPSAT-2A for meteorology and space environment monitoring missions; and GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, for environmental monitoring of both land and oceans. The GEO-KOMPSAT-2 program is a follow-up to the COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) program.

Arianespace also orbited three satellites for the telecom operator kt sat: KOREASAT-3 in 1999, KOREASAT-6 in 2010 and KOREASAT-7 in 2017.

In addition, Arianespace's backlog of orders includes another KARI satellite, KOMPSAT-7, to be orbited by a Vega C launcher.

KOUROU, French Guiana, Feb. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire (http://www.prnewswire.com/)/ -- Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT) third satellite based on the modernized LM 2100™ bus launched fr om the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 rocket and is traveling to its transfer orbit for a series of in-orbit tests before operations are handed over to Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation (TYO: 9412). JCSAT-17 will provide flexible mobile communications services to users in Japan and the surrounding region.

JCSAT-17 is the first Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) communications satellite built on the modernized LM 2100™, which includes 26 innovations that make the satellite more powerful, flexible and versatile in orbit. A reprogrammable mission processor adds flexibility as mission needs change. Lockheed Martin is currently manufacturing five modernized LM 2100™-based satellites for commercial and government customers.

"Advanced mobile satellite communications are necessary as the world consumes more and more data in the transition to 5G," said Guy Beutelschies, Lockheed Martin's Vice President for Communication Satellite Solutions. The satellite's payload incorporates S-band and C-band transponders with a flexible processor along with 18m mesh reflector, enabling assured communications continuity during high-volume events. The satellite also features robust Ku-band connectivity. JCSAT-17 is the eighth satellite built by Lockheed Martin for SJC, beginning with NSAT-110, JCSAT-9 through JCSAT-13 and JCSAT-110R.

Actually one object is in a 6.33 deg inclination orbit, 0.3 deg off from the others - that's more dispersion than we usually see in Ariane launches.

JCSAT-17 launched Feb. 18, completed 10 orbit raising burns, successfully deployed the 18-meter reflector and completed in orbit test. Congrats, team!
