The satellite has a contractual lifetime of 15 years, but actual life may be longer and it demonstrates SSL's commitment to providing a high-performance platform for services that inform, entertain and connect people around the globe.

Azerspace-2 will help Azercosmos meet the growing demand for direct-to-home (DTH) television, government, and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is Azercosmos' second telecommunications satellite, and will expand on the service currently available from Azerspace-1.

"Our collaboration with SSL and Intelsat has been very successful," said Rashad Nabiyev, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Azercosmos. "This satellite will enhance our capacity, coverage, and service offerings to support growing demand for services and we look forward to its launch with great anticipation."

For Intelsat, the satellite will provide continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite, which was also built by SSL and was launched in 2000. At 45 degrees East longitude, it provides DTH platforms for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Asia-Pacific region. Intelsat 38 will also provide connectivity for corporate networks and government applications in Africa.

"SSL has been a trusted manufacturing partner to Intelsat for many years," said Stephen Spengler, chief executive officer of Intelsat. "The new Intelsat 38 satellite payload will enable our media customers to deliver enhanced service offerings across Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific. The satellite design is based on the highly reliable SSL 1300 satellite platform that provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances.

Payload preparations advance for Arianespace's upcoming Vega and Ariane 5 missions

The payload processing for Arianespace's two upcoming missions fr om French Guiana is moving ahead at the Spaceport, involving the European Space Agency's Aeolus wind-monitoring spacecraft for a Vega liftoff scheduled on August 21; and the heavy-lift Ariane 5's flight of September 7, which will orbit two telecommunications relay platforms: Horizons 3e for the joint venture of Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation; along with Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 for Azercosmos and Intelsat.

Keeping the launch pace with Flight VA243 in September

Arianespace's Flight VA243 on September 7 will be a milestone in the career of Ariane 5, marking the 100th liftoff of the workhorse heavy-lift vehicle. For this evening launch, the Ariane 5 ECA version – equipped with the ESC-A cryogenic upper stage – will be used on another of Arianespace's dual-payload missions to geostationary transfer orbit. The Ariane 5 is provided by ArianeGroup as production prime contractor.

Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 is moved into a mobile container for its transfer to the Spaceport's S3B facility, wh ere the satellite is to be fueled.

Horizons 3e, to be installed as Ariane 5's upper passenger on Flight VA243, is owned by a joint venture of Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. In completing Intelsat's EpicNG global coverage, it will provide coverage for aeronautical and maritime mobility, fixed and wireless operators, as well as mobility and government customers. Built by Boeing, this is the first Intelsat EpicNG satellite to feature entire Ku-band spot beams utilizing multiport amplifiers that optimize power across the satellite.

The Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 payload to be orbited by Flight VA243 from Ariane 5's lower passenger position is designed to provide a range of telecommunications relay duties at the service of its two operators.

For Azercosmos – a company owned by the government of Azerbaijan Republic – the satellite will support growing demand for Direct-to-Home (DTH), government, and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. For the Luxembourg-headquartered Intelsat, the spacecraft is to deliver continuity of service from the 45 deg. East longitude orbital location, which provides DTH platforms for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Asia-Pacific region, while also offering connectivity for corporate networks and government applications in Africa.

Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 was built by Palo Alto, California-based SSL.

August 8th began bright and early. The team departed fr om the hotel at 6 am so that we would not be late for the arrival of the Horizons 3e satellite at the Cayenne airport.

The Russian built Antonov is one of the only airplanes in the world large enough to haul our satellites. Our Antonov arrived at 8 am sharp, not long after a sudden rain storm blew through that left us with a beautiful double rainbow.

Removing the 30-ton satellite shipping container out of the airplane and onto a truck is an exacting process. Before we could even unload the satellite, the airplane crew needs to build a ramp which typically takes several hours to construct. Once that process is complete, they methodically inch the shipping container down the ramp. It's then picked up by a huge crane that can withstand the weight of the satellite and its container and then placed onto a truck. It was after 1 pm before we left the airport and the satellite was transported to France's Guiana Space Center (CSG) in a convoy that is limited to about 30 mph.

Once the satellite arrived at CSG, the shipping container was carefully lifted off the truck. Wheels were installed onto the container and it was pushed into the High Bay with a huge diesel forklift. There is much work to be done before our satellite launch on September 7th.

Move from 880 Cart to Vibration Table

It is fair to say that I was happy to land a few days before the Horizons 3e satellite was set to arrive. While I have worked on four launch campaigns for Intelsat, and about a dozen for Hughes and Boeing, it is very rare that I have a chance to venture far from the Space Center. During launch campaigns, my days are typically long and filled with preparations for the satellite launch.

Since I had some time before the satellite was scheduled to arrive, I took advantage and did some exploration. I was able to go to Cacao, a village founded by Hmong war refugees from Laos. On Sundays, they have a lively local market. As is typical in French Guiana, the food is an eclectic mixture from all over the world. I picked up some delicious beignets to eat with my Asian infused green papaya salad. Quite the combo!

I also took a tour to the Marshes of Kaw. This is a large, remote wetland located on both sides of the Kaw River. In the Marshes, we used a small motor boat to visit a village wh ere I encountered wandering chickens and water buffalo. There was a French naturalist who provided an overview of the types of plants and animals found on the island.

French Guiana's ecosystem is similar to Florida in the United States – with egrets, vultures, hawks, otters, manatees, and caiman, the cousin of the alligator. In addition, they have piranha, huge spiders, and electric eels. After visiting the village, we went up the river to seek out the local birds and vegetation. There were brilliant blue butterflies as well as large birds of prey. We ended the night cruising the river, searching for the caiman. While we never encountered a big one, I did get to hold a foot-long one year old. Riding in the boat in the dark with the jungle noises in the background, while looking up at the Milky Way, was a welcome way to end the evening.

Enough with my reminiscing. This week is busy with activity. Boeing will take Horizons 3e out of the container and prepare it for a test mating with the Ariane-5 adapter. Until next time.

The Intelsat 38/Azerspace-2 satellite, slated for launch on 7 September with Horizons 3e, carries a Ku-band payload that will provide continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite located at 45 degrees East.

Intelsat 38 will host leading Direct-to-Home television platforms for the fast growing Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific regions and support the growth objectives of our customers in these regions. Intelsat 38 will also provide critical broadband connectivity for corporate network and government services in Africa.

Preparations are Underway:
Intelsat 38 was transported from the airport two weeks ago by a convoy comprised of a pilot car, police, safety car and a tools truck, making one stop while en route. The spacecraft was unloaded from its container at the BAF (Final Assembly Building) to the payload processing facility of the Guiana Space Center (CSG). At this location, the satellite will undergo an adapter fit-check and upon successful completion of this test, the spacecraft will then be towed in the CCU-3 (huge environmentally controlled portable high bay) to the S3B complex for electrical testing and fuel loading. Then it's back to the BAF for combined operations.

Staying on Course:
To ensure that we maintain and execute against our mission timeline, a daily status meeting is in effect with CSG/CNES (the French space agency), Arianespace, SSL and Intelsat so that we can all stay up to date on the status of completed activities and enact a plan for the next steps of the mission. Intelsat team members are present to ensure the spacecraft and launch providers are executing appropriately and address any technical challenges that may arise.

Launch campaigns are a special forum for experiencing and practicing the art of teamwork. Every stage of the process is dependent upon another person or another company's mission team, so it's critical that the team on site maintains close communications and collaborates effectively with one another.

The first 10 days have been critical for SSL, as its team must complete three major milestones. Only after successful completion of these milestones will the spacecraft be authorized for the fueling stage.

A Look at the Three Major Milestones:

• Stage 1: Adapter Fit-Check to the spacecraft – This is the first time the launcher flight hardware is physically integrated to the spacecraft to ensure there are no electrical or mechanical issues. This check was completed successfully on 8 August. Later, the spacecraft will be installed on the adapter before this composite is mated to the launcher.
• Stage 2: Completing all electrical testing and verifying that the propulsion system does not leak – This phase validates that the spacecraft is operating flawlessly as it was prior to shipping from California. This phase also involves conducting final closeout inspections of the spacecraft and taking photographs.
• Stage 3: Measuring the dry mass of the spacecraft – This task is performed on a special measurement system (load ring) that must be accurately calibrated. This is an important parameter because when fueling, the total mass of the spacecraft with fuel cannot exceed the contractual mass, which for Intelsat 38 is 3,500 kilograms. Since the lifetime of the spacecraft is directly dependent on the amount of fuel available, it's important to utilize the remaining mass to its maximum potential by filling up the propellant tanks as much as the system allows.

The Horizons 3e satellite is fueled for a history-making dual-passenger flight on Ariane 5

The Horizons 3e telecommunications satellite has been fueled at the Spaceport in French Guiana, readying it for the 100th launch of a heavy-lift Ariane 5 – which also will carry the Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 relay platform on this milestone Arianespace flight planned for September 25.

Fueling activity for Horizons 3e occurred in the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility, readying the spacecraft for its subsequent integration in the upper position of Ariane 5's dual-payload configuration.

The upcoming mission to geostationary transfer orbit is designated Flight VA243 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system.

Ariane 5 reaches the "century mark" with Flight VA243

As the largest vehicle in Arianespace's launcher family, Ariane 5 is a true workhorse – performing missions that range from low-Earth and geostationary transfer orbits to escape trajectories that place spacecraft on their way for the exploration of deep space.

Delivered to Arianespace by industrial prime contractor ArianeGroup, Ariane 5 is operated from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch complex in French Guiana.

For Flight VA243, the Ariane 5 ECA configuration will be used, equipped with a cryogenic upper stage. This is the configuration utilized on missions to geostationary transfer orbit, typically carrying a payload of two telecommunications satellite passengers.

Flight VA243: The 100th Ariane 5 will carry Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 for Intelsat, SKY Perfect JSAT and Azercosmos

For its sixth launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit two telecommunications satellites using an Ariane 5 from the Guiana Space Center (CSG): Horizons 3e, installed as the upper passenger, for Intelsat and its partner SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation; along with Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, as the lower passenger, for Azercosmos and Intelsat.

With this 300th mission of its three-member launcher family – and the 100th utilizing the European-developed heavy-lift Ariane 5 – Arianespace once again serves the ambitions of leading satellite operators, both globally and regionally.

Flight VA243 will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Friday, September 21, 2018 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

Flight VA243 will be a significant milestone in the operational career of Ariane 5, marking the 100th liftoff of this workhorse vehicle, as well as the 300th launch for Arianespace's family of launchers.

To be installed as Ariane 5's upper passenger on Flight VA243, Horizons 3e is owned by a joint venture between Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT, marking the fourth collaboration between the two companies.

The satellite will complete Intelsat EpicNG's global coverage and provide broadband, mobility and government customers with unmatched performance, resiliency and redundancy, bringing the next level of high-throughput services to the Asia-Pacific region and expanding coverage in the Pacific Ocean.

The 6,441-kg. satellite will provide 30 gigabits per second of bandwidth for fixed and mobile customers, and it is to be stationed at the 169° East orbital location to replace Intelsat 805.

Built by Boeing, Horizons 3e will be the 60th Intelsat satellite, as well as the 20th for SKY Perfect JSAT, to be launched by Arianespace – and as such, it embodies the unique partnership between Intelsat, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation and Arianespace.

Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 is a multi-mission satellite to be located at 45° East.

For the second time, Arianespace will support the development of Azercosmos – the premier satellite operator in the South Caucasus region – by launching Azerbaijan's second geostationary satellite, Azerspace-2. It will be Azercosmos' second telecommunications satellite and is to expand on the current capacity of Azerspace-1.

The satellite will offer enhanced capacity, coverage and service offerings to support growing demand in the region for Direct-to-Home (DTH), government and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is ideally designed for smaller antennas and has cross-connectivity between East Africa, West Africa and Central Africa, Europe and Central Asia.

Intelsat 38 is a Ku-band satellite to be placed at the 45ºE orbital location. It will replace Intelsat 12 and host Direct-to-Home (DTH) platforms for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Asia-Pacific region. Intelsat 38 will also provide connectivity for corporate networks and government applications in Africa.

California-based SSL, a Maxar Technologies Company, is the prime contractor of Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38.

For its sixth launch of the year, Arianespace will orbit two telecommunications satellites using an Ariane 5 from the Guiana Space Center (CSG): Horizons 3e, installed as the upper passenger, for Intelsat and its partner SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation; along with Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, as the lower passenger, for Azercosmos and Intelsat.

With this 300th mission of its three-member launcher family – and the 100th utilizing the European-developed heavy-lift Ariane 5 – Arianespace once again serves the ambitions of leading satellite operators, both globally and regionally.

Ariane 5: Assembled and cleared for Arianespace's history-making 100th launch on September 25

Arianespace's upcoming mission from the Spaceport in French Guiana – which will mark the heavy-lift Ariane 5's 100th launch – has been cleared for liftoff next week with a dual-satellite payload.

The authorization was provided following today's Launch Readiness Review, which verified the heavy-lift Ariane 5's "go" status, along with its Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 passengers, the Spaceport's infrastructure, and the network of flight-following ground stations.

Liftoff of the mission – designated Flight VA243 in Arianespace's numbering system – is set for September 25 during a launch window that opens at 6:53 p.m. in French Guiana (21h53 UTC). Its two relay platforms are to be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit during a mission lasting 42 minutes. The payload mass is estimated to be 10,827 kg.

Dual-payload delivery

Activity at the Spaceport leading up to today's Launch Readiness Review included completion of the launch vehicle's integration in the Final Assembly Building for Ariane 5. During this process, Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 was mated to Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage, followed by installation of the ogive-shaped payload fairing containing Horizons 3e and the SYLDA dispenser system – enabling dual payloads to be carried by Arianespace's heavy-lift launcher.

Horizons 3e – to be deployed from Ariane 5's upper payload slot – is owned by a joint venture of Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. Built by Boeing using Intelsat's EpicNG design, it will provide coverage for aeronautical and maritime mobility, fixed and wireless operators, as well as mobility and government customers. In addition, Horizons 3e is the first satellite in Intelsat's EpicNG spacecraft series to feature entire Ku-band spot beams utilizing multiport amplifiers that optimize power across the spacecraft.

The Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 co-passenger to be orbited by Flight VA243 from Ariane 5's lower passenger position was produced by SSL, and is designed to provide a range of telecommunications relay duties at the service of its two operators – Intelsat and Azercosmos, a company owned by the government of Azerbaijan Republic.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace Flight VA243 moves into the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch complex in preparation for liftoff on Tuesday, September 25.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's dual-payload launch with the Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 telecommunications satellites has rolled out to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport, clearing the way for the milestone 100th flight of this workhorse fr om French Guiana.

Riding atop one of mobile launch tables for the heavy-lift vehicle, Ariane 5 today completed its transfer from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – wh ere payload integration occurred – to the dedicated ELA-3 launch complex. With this rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for a September 25 liftoff at the start of a 45-minute launch window opening at 6:53 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Tomorrow's mission is designated Flight VA243, and it has an estimated payload performance of 10,827 kg. – a total that factors in Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, plus the dual-satellite dispenser system and integration hardware. Both passengers are to be deployed to geostationary transfer orbit during a 42-minute flight sequence.

Boosting telecommunications with Flight VA243

Horizons 3e is the mission's upper passenger and will be released first in the flight sequence at 28 minutes after liftoff. Owned by a joint venture of Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, this Boeing-built spacecraft will provide coverage for aeronautical and maritime mobility, fixed and wireless operators, as well as mobility and government customers. Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, produced by SSL, is to be deployed 14 minutes later from Ariane 5's lower passenger position. Intelsat 38 will provide Ku-band capabilities and deliver continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite located at 45 deg. East.

As the fourth heavy-lift Ariane 5 flight so far in 2018, tomorrow's mission will continue an active year for Arianespace's full family of launchers, which also has included one flight each with the medium-lift Soyuz and the lightweight Vega.

Two U.S.-built communications satellites are ready to ride the 100th European-made Ariane 5 rocket into orbit Tuesday fr om the jungle of French Guiana. Liftoff is scheduled for 2153 GMT (5:53 p.m. EDT; 6:53 p.m. French Guiana time) at the opening of a 45-minute launch window.

The Ariane 5 rocket arrived at its launch pad at the Guiana Space Center on Monday following a 1.7-mile (2.7-kilometer) rollout from the spaceport's final assembly building, wh ere workers installed the mission's two commercial telecom payloads atop the rocket earlier this month.

Ground crews planned to connect the Ariane 5 and its mobile launch table to electrical and propellant supplies at the ELA-3 launch zone ahead of Tuesday's countdown.

The mission, numbered VA243 in Arianespace's flight sequence, will mark the 100th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since its debut in 1996.

The Ariane 5 is a workhorse of the commercial launch industry, hauling 205 satellites into space to date. Most of those payloads have been large geostationary telecom spacecraft -- typically launched two at a time to take advantage of the Ariane 5's heavy lift capacity -- in addition to European Space Agency science missions like the Rosetta comet chaser and the Herschel and Planck astronomical observatories, and 12 Galileo navigation satellites.

Tuesday's launch will also mark the 300th mission by Arianespace since its founding in 1980, a figure that includes flights by Soyuz and Vega rockets overseen by the French launch services provider.

The satellites aboard the 100th Ariane 5 rocket launch are Horizons 3e, a Boeing-built broadband spacecraft owned by a joint venture between Intelsat and Japan-based SKY Perfect JSAT, and the Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 communications payload, a "condosat" shared between Azerbaijan's national satellite operator and Intelsat.

The 14,200-pound (6,441-kilogram) Horizons 3e satellite, the larger of the two satellites, will ride into space in the upper position inside the Ariane 5's Swiss-made nose fairing. Horizons 3e carries an all-digital communications payload, allowing its operator to adjust power and capacity across the satellite's coverage zone as required by market demands.

The new satellite will provide 30 gigabits per second of C-band and Ku-band bandwidth for customers across the Asia-Pacific region from a perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator at 169 degrees east longitude. Horizons 3e is destined to replace the Intelsat 805 satellite launched from Cape Canaveral by an Atlas 2AS rocket in 1998.

The Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 satellite will launch in the lower berth of the Ariane 5's dual-payload accommodation. Once the Horizons 3e satellite deploys from the rocket, a Sylda adapter structure will jettison to reveal the roughly 7,716-pound (3,500-kilogram) Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 spacecraft for release.

Built by SSL in Palo Alto, California, a division of Maxar, the satellite enter service in geostationary orbit at 45 degrees east longitude to beam direct-to-home television broadcast services over Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South Asia. Azercosmos, the government-owned satellite operator of Azerbaijan, and Intelsat will share the satellite's communications capacity.

Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 will extend coverage currently offered by the Azerspace 1 telecom satellite. For Intelsat, the new spacecraft will replace the Intelsat 12 satellite launched by an Ariane 4 rocket in 2000.

The final countdown will commence at 1030 GMT (6:30 a.m. EDT), with clocks at the Guiana Space Center timed for a targeted liftoff at 2153 GMT (5:53 p.m. EDT; 6:53 p.m. French Guiana time). The launch window extends until 2238 GMT (6:38 p.m. EDT; 7:38 p.m. French Guiana time).

Electrical systems checks on the Ariane 5 are set to begin at 1120 GMT (7:20 a.m. EDT).

Workers will also put finishing touches on the launch pad, including the closure of doors, removal of safety barriers and configuring fluid lines for fueling. The flight program for Tuesday's launch will also be loaded into the rocket's computer.

The launch team will begin the process to fuel the rocket with super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants around 1715 GMT (1:15 p.m. EDT). First, ground reservoirs and the rocket's helium tank will be pressurized, then the fuel lines will be chilled down to condition the plumbing for the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, which are stored at approximately minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit and minus 298 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

It will take approximately two hours to fill the Ariane 5 core stage tanks.

A similar procedure for the Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage will commence at 1825 GMT (2:25 p.m. EDT).

Chilldown conditioning of the Vulcain 2 first stage engine will occur at 1835 GMT (2:35 p.m. EDT), and a communications check between the rocket and ground telemetry, tracking and command systems is scheduled for 2038 GMT (4:38 p.m. EDT).

A final weather briefing will come at T-minus 10 minues, and then the computer-controlled synchronized countdown sequence will begin seven minutes before launch to pressurize propellant tanks, switch to on-board power and take the rocket's guidance system to flight mode.

The Vulcain 2 engine will ignite as the countdown clock reaches zero, followed by a health check and ignition of the Ariane 5's solid rocket boosters seven seconds later to send the 1.7 million-pound launcher skyward.

Five seconds after blastoff, the rocket will begin pitching east from the ELA-3 launch pad, surpassing the speed of sound less than a minute into the mission. The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters will jettison nearly two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff.

Once above the dense atmosphere, the launcher's payload fairing will fall away at an altitude of more than 70 miles — about 112 kilometers -- at Plus+3 minutes, 19 seconds. The Ariane 5's first stage will shut down 8 minutes, 55 seconds, after liftoff, followed moments later by stage separation and ignition of the hydrogen-fueled cryogenic HM7B upper stage engine.

The rocket's upper stage will fire more than 16 minutes, accelerating to a velocity of 21,000 mph, or more than 9.3 kilometers per second, to reach an orbit with a planned high point of 35,726 kilometers (22,199 miles), a targeted low point of 250 kilometers (155 miles) and an inclination of 6 degrees.

The release of the Horizons 3e satellite will come first at Plus+28 minutes, 19 seconds.

Once Horizons 3e is deployed, the Ariane 5 rocket's barrel-shaped Sylda 5 dual-payload adapter will be jettisoned at Plus+35 minutes, 56 seconds.

Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 4 will separate from the lower portion of the payload stack at 42 minutes, 17 seconds.

Both satellites will use their own engines to raise their orbits to a circular perch along the equator at an altitude of nearly 22,300 miles (35,800 kilometers).

T-minus 100 minutes. The Ariane 5 rocket's first stage, known by the French acronym EPC, is currently being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The second stage, or ESC-A, should also be receiving the same mix of liquid propellants. The first stage Vulcain 2 engine and the upper stage HM7B engine both consume the super-cold fuel.

The cryogenic propellant will be gradually pumped inside the rocket to maintain proper levels as the fuel evaporates over the rest of the countdown.

The Ariane 5's supply of cryogenic liquid helium, used to pressurize the rocket's propellant tanks, was loaded aboard the launcher after Monday's rollout.

An Ariane 5 rocket emerged fr om the final assembly building at the Guiana Space Center in South America on Monday for the journey across the tropical spaceport to the ELA-3 launch zone, wh ere the 179-foot-tall (54.8-meter) booster will lift off Tuesday with a pair of commercial communications satellites.

What's special about Tuesday's mission is that it will be the 100th launch of an Ariane 5 rocket since the European heavy-lifter debuted in 1996. It will also be the 300th mission managed under the auspices of Arianespace, which has overseen launches by the Ariane family of rockets, in addition to Soyuz and Vega rocket flights.

Two U.S.-built communications satellites are fastened on top of the Ariane 5 rocket — the Horizons 3e broadband satellite developed under a joint venture between Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT of Japan, and the Azerspace 2/Intelsat 38 television broadcast payload, a "condosat" with capacity shared by Azerbaijan's national satellite operator and Intelsat.

Minus-40 minutes. The Ariane 5's first and second stages should now be loaded with cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants.

The 17.7-foot-diameter first stage's Vulcain 2 engine burns 149.5 metric tons, or about 329,000 pounds, of liquid oxygen and 25 metric tons, or about 55,000 pounds, of liquid hydrogen. The cryogenic upper stage's HM7B engine consumes about 14.7 metric tons, or more than 32,000 pounds, of oxygen and hydrogen.

The fluids are stored at super-cold temperatures and naturally boil off in the warm tropical atmosphere in French Guiana. More propellant is slowly pumped into the rocket for most of the countdown to replenish the cryogenic fuel.

The topping sequence ends in the final few minutes of the countdown as the fuel tanks are pressurized and the fueling system is secured.

Built by a consortium of European contractors led by Airbus Safran Launchers in Vernon, France, the Vulcain 2 engine generates up to 300,000 pounds of thrust during its 9-minute firing. It burns about 320 kilograms, or 705 pounds, of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant per second.

The engine's nozzle has an exit diameter of 2.1 meters, or about 6.9 feet. It weighs more than 4,600 pounds and its liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbopumps spin at 12,300 rpm and 35,800 rpm, respectively.

The Vulcain 2 replaced the Vulcain engine used on the initial version of the Ariane 5. The newer engine produces 20 percent more thrust.

The Ariane 5's upper stage is powered by an HM7B engine, a modified version of the HM7 engine used on the upper stage of the Ariane 4 rocket. The 364-pound HM7B engine is manufactured by Airbus Safran Launchers in Ottobrunn, Germany.

The HM7B engine produces more than 14,500 pounds of thrust in vacuum.

The Ariane 5 configuration with a Vulcain 2 engine and HM7B-powered cryogenic upper stage is known as the Ariane 5 ECA.

The Ariane 5's twin solid rocket boosters are packed with propellant near the launch site in French Guiana before they are assembled and positioned on each side of the cryogenic core stage.

With the rocket now fully fueled for launch, the vehicle weighs 1.7 million pounds. At liftoff, the rocket produces 2.9 million pounds of thrust.

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launcher has begun its milestone 100th flight from the Spaceport, carrying the Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 telecommunications satellites – which will be deployed during a sequence lasting 42 minutes from liftoff to final separation.

Payload lift performance for today's mission – which is designated Flight VA243 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – is estimated at 10,827 kg.

Arianespace's on-target mission with Horizons 3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 marked the milestone 100th flight of a heavy-lift Ariane 5, confirming this workhorse vehicle's role as the launch services industry reference in reliability, flexibility and performance.

With the deployment of its latest two passengers during a 42-minute flight from the Spaceport in French Guiana, Ariane 5's combined lift performance over these 100 missions exceeds 790 metric tons – including a total of 207 satellites for 68 customers around the globe. Overall, the launcher has achieved a remarkable 98.1% reliability rate during more than 22 years in service.

Tonight's success also marked the 300th flight by a member of the company's family of launchers, in which Ariane 5 is joined by the medium Soyuz and lightweight Vega in side-by-side operations at the Spaceport.

A success for loyal customers

Designated Flight VA243, today's heavy-lift success continues long relationships of trust between Arianespace and the mission's customers. Horizons 3e was released first in the flight sequence, being deployed from the upper slot in Ariane 5's payload configuration, followed by Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, located in the lower passenger position. Total lift performance to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) was estimated at 10,827 kg.

Horizons 3e was lofted for a joint venture of Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. Built by Boeing using Intelsat's EpicNG design, it will provide coverage for aeronautical and maritime mobility, fixed and wireless operators, as well as mobility and government customers. It also is the first satellite in Intelsat's EpicNG spacecraft series to feature entire Ku-band spot beams utilizing multiport amplifiers that optimize power across the spacecraft.

The spacecraft is a special payload on multiple fronts: Horizons 3e is the 60th Intelsat satellite to be launched by Arianespace, as well as the 20th for SKY Perfect JSAT. In addition, it is the 56th Boeing-built spacecraft orbited by the company to date.

Building on long-term cooperation

Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 – built by SSL, a Maxar Technologies Company – offers 35 active transponders in Ku-band and has designed lifetime of more than 15 years. With today's success, Arianespace has now orbited a total of 65 satellites produced by SSL.

Azerspace-2 will increase the coverage area and spectrum of services provided by Azercosmos, expanding on the current capacity of Azerspace-1 – the operator's first relay platform, launched on an Arianespace Ariane 5 mission in February 2013. The spacecraft's planned orbital position is only one degree away from the current Azerspace-1 orbital location at 46° East, which creates favorable opportunities for existing and new customers to start expanding their current satellite solutions.

The satellite will offer enhanced capacity, coverage and service offerings to support growing demand in the region for Direct-to-Home (DTH), government and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Intelsat 38 will provide Ku-band capabilities and deliver continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite located at 45° East. The satellite will host leading Direct-to-Home television platforms for the fast-growing Central and Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific regions, as well as provide critical broadband connectivity for corporate network and government services in Africa. It is the 61st Intelsat spacecraft lofted by Arianespace.

Continuing the launch pace

Following Flight VA243's liftoff and subsequent satellite deployment, Israël took the opportunity to acknowledge the industrial and infrastructure teams that continue to support Arianespace in its commercial Ariane operations – including the vehicle's production prime contractor (as well as Arianespace's main shareholder) ArianeGroup.

Flight VA243 was Arianespace's sixth launch in 2018, and it follows other heavy-lift Ariane 5 missions performed this year on January 25 (carrying SES-14 and Al Yah 3), April 5 (DSN-1/Superbird-8 and HYLAS 4) and July 25 (four Galileo satellites). Also conducted earlier in 2018 was Arianespace's medium-lift Soyuz mission on March 9 (with four O3b satellites); plus a light-lift Vega flight performed August 22 (Aeolus).

Arianespace's next launch – an Ariane 5 flight that will send the BepiColombo scientific mission on its way to planet Mercury – is planned for October 19, at the service of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Arianespace has successfully launched two communications satellites: Horizons 3e for Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, and Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 for Azercosmos and Intelsat.

The launch took place on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 19:38 pm (local time) from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana (South America).

This was Arianespace's sixth mission of the year, as well as the 100th mission by the Ariane 5 heavy launcher. In 22 years of operations, Ariane 5 has orbited a total of 207 satellites.

Today's launch also marked the 300th mission by the Arianespace family of launchers, reflecting the company's ongoing role in support of leading satellite operators, both regional and global.

Ariane 5 No. 100: a total success

Today's mission marks a double milestone in the history of Arianespace: the 100th launch of an Ariane 5 since this heavy launcher entered service in 1996, and the 300th launch for the Arianespace family of launchers, which currently comprises Ariane 5, the Soyuz medium launcher and the Vega light launcher. Including this latest mission, Ariane 5 has now orbited a total of 207 satellites for 68 customers, representing a combined weight of more than 790 metric tons.

In its 22-year career, Ariane 5 has been produced in five different versions: Ariane 5 G, G+, GS, ES and ECA.

The Ariane 5 ES has been launched eight times since 2008, while the Ariane 5 ECA has carried out 62 launches into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) since 2002. It has increased payload capacity by 15% since entering service and set a record for net payload weight into GTO on June 1, 2017, at 9,969 kg.

Over the years, Ariane 5 has clearly established itself as the benchmark launcher for geostationary missions, with 170 satellites injected into GTO, including 153 communications satellites. More than half of all satellites orbited by this heavy launcher were on behalf of non-European operators, making Ariane 5 an export champion.

Throughout its career, Ariane 5 has launched a number of emblematic European missions: XMM-Newton in 1999, Envisat in 2002, Rosetta in 2004, Hershel and Planck in 2009, five launches of the ATV resupply vessel for the International Space Station from 2008 to 2014, and three launches to date for Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system between 2016 and July 25, 2018. On October 19 of this year, Ariane 5 will boost the BepiColombo spacecraft towards Mercury, on a mission for the European Space Agency (ESA) in partnership with Japanese space agency JAXA.

The last batch of Ariane 5 rockets will be operated concurrently with Ariane 6 starting in 2020, before Ariane 6 reaches full operational capacity, which is slated for 2023.

A successful launch for three loyal customers: Intelsat, SKY Perfect JSAT and Azercosmos

Installed as Ariane 5's upper passenger on today's launch, Flight VA243, Horizons 3e is owned by a joint venture between Intelsat and SKY Perfect JSAT.

Horizons 3e completes the Intelsat EpicNG network's global coverage. Featuring unrivaled performance, redundancy and resilience, it will offer high-speed broadband connectivity to mobile service providers and government customers. Horizons 3e will bring the next level of high-throughput services to the Asia-Pacific region and expanding coverage in the Pacific Ocean. The all-digital Horizons 3e payload represents a continued evolution of the award-winning Intelsat EpicNG platform.

Chicago-headquartered Boeing is the prime contractor of Horizons 3e.

Ariane 5 once again seamlessly supports the unique partnership between Intelsat, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation and Arianespace, an alliance that reaches back over 35 years.

Installed as the lower passenger on this launch, Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 is a multi-mission satellite that will be positioned at 45° East.

For the second time, Arianespace will support the development of Azercosmos – the premier satellite operator in the South Caucasus region – by launching Azerbaijan's second geostationary satellite, Azerspace-2. It will be Azercosmos' second telecommunications satellite and is to expand on the current capacity of Azerspace-1. The satellite will offer enhanced capacity, coverage and service offerings to support growing demand in the region for Direct-to-Home (DTH), government and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Intelsat 38 will provide Ku-band capabilities and be located at 45° East. It will deliver continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite and host Direct-to-Home television platforms for the Central and Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. The satellite will also provide critical broadband connectivity for corporate network and government services in Africa.

California-based SSL, a Maxar Technologies company, is the prime contractor of Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38.

Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of the two satellites, Stéphane Israël, Chief Executive Officer of Arianespace, said: "With this sixth launch of the year, Arianespace is proud to have placed its 100th Ariane 5 mission at the service of our American, Japanese and Azeri customers."

An Ariane 5, on its milestone 100th launch, has delivered the Horizons-3e and Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 telecom satellites into their planned orbits.

Arianespace announced liftoff at 22:38 GMT (00:38 CEST on 26 September, 19:38 local time) yesterday from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The mission lasted about 42 minutes.

Horizons-3e, with a launch mass of 6441 kg, was the first to be released after about 28 minutes. The 3500 kg Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38 was released 14 minutes later.

Horizons-3e, owned and operated by Intelsat and Japan's SKY Perfect JSAT, will provide next-generation fixed and mobile communications to Asia-Pacific and the Pacific Ocean regions. Azerspace-2/Intelsat-38, a multi-mission satellite owned and operated by Azercosmos and Intelsat, provides improved communications for Europe, Asia and Africa. Both satellites have a design life of 15 years.

The performance requested for this launch was about 10 827 kg. The satellites totalled about 9941 kg, with payload adapters and carrying structures making up the rest.

Horizons 3e is the first Intelsat EpicNG satellite to feature a multiport amplifier that enables power portability across all Ku-band spot beams. With the multiport amplifier, power can be adjusted to each beam to meet customer throughput demands. This enhanced, advanced digital payload features full beam interconnectivity in three commercial bands and significant upgrades on power, efficiency and coverage flexibility.

(NYSE: I), operator of the world's first Globalized Network and leader in integrated satellite communications, and Azercosmos, the national satellite operator of Azerbaijan, announced the successful launch of the Intelsat 38 and Azerspace-2 satellite aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. Liftoff occurred at 6:38 pm EDT. The Intelsat 38 and Azerspace-2 satellite separated from the rocket's upper stage at 7:21 pm EDT. Signal acquisition has been confirmed.

Intelsat 38 is a Ku-band satellite to be placed at the 45ºE orbital location. It will replace Intelsat 12 and host Direct-to-Home (DTH) platforms for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Asia-Pacific region. Intelsat 38 will also provide connectivity for corporate networks and government applications in Africa. Intelsat 38 was built by SSL, a Maxar Technologies Ltd. company (formerly MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.) (NYSE and TSX: MAXR).

Azerspace-2 will help Azercosmos meet the growing demand for direct-to-home (DTH) television, government, and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. The satellite will also provide high power Ku-band connectivity to the African continent from 45 degrees East. Azerspace-2 is ideally designed for smaller antennas and will deliver cross connectivity between East Africa, West Africa and Central Africa, Europe and Central Asia.

"Azerpsace-2 is Azercosmos' second telecommunications satellite and will further expand the service
currently available from Azerspace-1," said Rashad Nabiyev, chairman and chief Executive officer of Azercosmos. "The satellite will also enable us to provide more reliable service by serving as back-up for Azerspace-1 located at 46 degrees East, which is only one degree away from Azerspace-2. Intelsat 38 and Azercosmos-2 are expected to enter into service in the first quarter of 2019.

На борту ракеты-носителя находится телекоммуникационный спутник Horizons 3e, принадлежащий Intelsat и SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, который будет размещен на орбитальной позиции 169 градусов восточной долготы.

Его "соседом" по ракете стал второй телекоммуникационный спутник Азербайджана Azerspace-2, который будет размещен на орбитальной позиции 45 градусов восточной долготы. Спутник, предназначенный для цифрового телерадиовещания, доступа в интернет и передачи данных, будет размещен на орбитальной позиции, арендуемой Азербайджаном у международной организации спутниковой связи Intelsat. В зону обслуживания Azerspace-2 войдут страны Европы, Юго-Восточной Азии, Ближнего Востока и Африки. Baku, September 26, 2018 – Today, under the leadership of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, the third Azerbaijani satellite Azerspace-2 was successfully launched into the orbit at 02.38 am GMT+4 from Kourou Spaceport in French Guiana. The satellite, launched by an Ariane 5 launch vehicle, successfully separated from the rocket's upper stage at the 42nd minute of the flight.

The satellite is designed on the basis of highly reliable SSL 1300 satellite platform by US-based company "Space Systems/Loral" (SSL). It will be placed at the 45º East orbital position and will provide services for minimum 20 years.

Ground infrastructure in Baku and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has been renewed for the new satellite's exploitation. After the successful testing processes and its placement into the final orbital position, the satellite operation will be handed over to Azercosmos to launch its commercial activity.

Azerspace-2 will provide highly-reliable broadband and broadcast solutions to its customers in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Along with increase of coverage area and spectrum of services provided by Azercosmos, Azerspace-2 will also serve as a back-up for the first telecommunication satellite Azerspace-1. The satellite will offer enhanced capacity, coverage and service offerings to support growing demand for network services of the public and private sectors in the region.

With this launch, there are now 90 satellites built by SSL in geostationary orbit.
