Written on 12 Apr 2018

SES-12, which has both traditional wide beams and high throughput capabilities, will meet diverse needs of fixed data, mobility, government and video customers across Asia-Pacific

Luxembourg, 12 April 2018 – The SES-12 spacecraft has arrived safely at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, in preparation for launch on board a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

SES-12, which is uniquely designed with both state-of-the-art wide beams and high throughput beams, will join SES-8 at 95 degrees East to serve SES video and data customers across the Asia-Pacific region. It will replace and augment services currently provided on NSS-6.
Спойлер
Like SES-14 and SES-15, which serve the Americas, SES-12's high throughput capabilities are SES's answer to soaring connectivity demand in the aeronautical and maritime segments in the Asia-Pacific region. SES-12 will also be pivotal in enabling governments that want to roll out connectivity programmes to bridge the digital divide and in allowing telcos, mobile network operators and internet service providers to deliver more reliable cellular backhaul and broadband services.

Together with SES-8, SES-12 will reach 18 million TV homes from its 95°E orbital position, and will provide pay-TV operators the reliability and scalability to deliver high-quality and immersive viewing experiences and address the ever-increasing audience demand for High Definition (HD) and Ultra HD content.

With six wide beams and 72 high throughput user spot beams, SES-12 is one of the largest geostationary satellites that SES has ever procured. The spacecraft also has a Digital Transparent Processor (DTP) that increases payload flexibility to provide much more customised bandwidth solutions to SES's customers. The all-electric SES-12 spacecraft was built by Airbus Defence and Space, and will rely fully on electric propulsion for orbit raising and subsequent in-orbit manoeuvres.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES said, "SES-12 was built to meet the dynamic needs of our customers across the Asia-Pacific region, and to empower them to capture massive growth opportunities in their markets. When co-located with SES-8, it will provide incremental high performance capacity and offer greater reliability and flexibility to our video and data customers."

The SES-12 spacecraft will join SES's network of seven geostationary satellites and 16 MEO satellites in the Asia-Pacific region to provide unparalleled coverage to over 20 countries.

Toulouse, 12 April 2018 – The SES-12 all-electric communications satellite, built by Airbus for SES, has been shipped from the Airbus Defence and Space facilities in Toulouse, France, to Cape Canaveral, Florida.
SES-12 is the largest and most powerful all electric satellite ever produced. It is based on the highly reliable Eurostar platform in its E3000e variant, which uses electric propulsion for orbit raising (EOR). The related mass saving enables SES-12 to combine two high-capacity missions, equivalent to two conventional satellites, in one satellite.

To fulfill its dual mission, SES-12 features both wide beams and high throughput spot beams to serve diverse connectivity needs.

The communications payload incorporates state-of-the-art solutions, in particular multi-beam antennas linked to a digital signal processor, which enable a multitude of basic spectral channels to be allocated to various beams in a completely flexible manner.

The satellite will provide expansion and replacement capacity to serve the data, mobility, government and video sectors in the Asia-Pacific region.

SES-12 will operate in the Ku and Ka-bands with a total of 76 active transponders and eight antennas. It will have a launch mass of 5,400 kg and an electrical power of 19 kW. It will operate in geostationary orbit at the 95° East location and has been designed to remain in service for more than 15 years.

SpaceX will follow next week's launch with one more Falcon 9 flight before the end of May from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad.

On that mission, which an SES official said is currently scheduled for no earlier than May 31, SpaceX will haul the Airbus-built SES 12 communications satellite toward a perch in geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

Officials had previously expected the SES 12 launch on May 24, at the earliest.

SES 12 is the largest and most powerful all-electric satellite ever built, allowing engineers to replace the mass of conventional liquid propellant with additional instrumentation for extra telecom relay capacity.

Equipped with eight antennas and 76 active Ku-band and Ka-band transponders, SES 12 will serve the direct-to-home television broadcast, mobile communications and high-throughput data relay markets across the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific regions, including India and Indonesia.

Like the Iridium/GRACE-FO rideshare launch, the SES 12 mission will fly on a reused Falcon 9 first stage booster refurbished after sending the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane toward orbit last September.

SpaceX has two missions planned for June, both from Florida, with the Telstar 19 Vantage communications satellite and the company's next Dragon resupply flight to the International Space Station.

SpaceX is expected to conduct a hold-down firing Thursday of a previously-flown Falcon 9 rocket booster at Cape Canaveral, ahead of a scheduled May 31 liftoff with an all-electric commercial communications satellite for SES.

The static fire test at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad is a major step ahead of next week's launch with SES 12, a high-power telecom payload which will provide data, mobility, government and video services in the Asia-Pacific region.

Built by Airbus Defense and Space, the satellite will carry an all-electric propulsion system, replacing the weight of conventional rocket fuel with extra payload capacity for additional communications transponders, antennas and other equipment.

SpaceX ground crews are expected to roll out the Falcon 9 rocket, without the SES 12 satellite on-board, to Complex 40 and lift the launcher upright ahead of Thursday's static fire attempt.

The two-stage rocket will be loaded with kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants, then its nine first stage engines will ignite for several seconds for a health check, as clamps hold the Falcon 9 on the ground.

Once the test is complete, technicians will remove the rocket from the pad and roll it back to the hangar for attachment of SES 12, before returning to Complex 40 ahead of next week's launch.

The launch window May 31 opens at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT).

The first stage set to launch SES 12 first flew last September with the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane. It's based on the older, discontinued "Block 4" version of the Falcon 9 rocket, and SpaceX does not plan to recover the booster on next week's mission.

The nine Merlin main engines at the base of a recycled Falcon 9 rocket booster ignited Thursday night for several seconds during a pre-flight test-firing on a Cape Canaveral launch pad, clearing a major hurdle ahead of a scheduled May 31 liftoff with a high-power communications satellite for SES.

The main engines fired at 9:30 p.m. EDT Thursday (0130 GMT Friday) as clamps held the Falcon 9 rocket firmly on the ground at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad.

SpaceX confirmed a satisfactory static fire test, a customary step in all of the company's launch campaigns, in a tweet published a few minutes later.

Thursday night's hold-down firing clears the way for ground crews to lower the rocket from its launch mount and roll it back to a nearby hangar, wh ere workers will connect it to the SES 12 communications satellite set to ride it toward a perch more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

The SES 12 satellite, nestled inside the Falcon 9 rocket's payload fairing, will be mated to the launcher's upper stage. The rocket will be returned to pad 40 next week ahead of a 58-minute launch window opening at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT) next Thursday, May 31.

The middle-of-the-night launch will mark SpaceX's 11th mission of the year, and the 13th time the company has flown a reused first stage booster since Falcon 9 flights with recycled rockets began in March 2017.

The first stage assigned to SES 12's launch first flew last September with the U.S. Air Force's robotic X-37B spaceplane, which remains in orbit on a top secret mission. The booster is based on a discontinued version of the Falcon 9 rocket, known as the Block 4, and SpaceX is not expected to attempt to recover the vehicle.

Driven by plasma thrusters instead of conventional rocket engines, the SES 12 satellite was manufactured by Airbus Defense and Space and assembled in Toulouse, France, before its shipment to Cape Canaveral last month.

SES 12 will be one of the largest satellites in a fleet of more than 50 spacecraft owned by SES, a Luxembourg-based company which is one of the world's biggest commercial satellite operators. Once in position in geostationary orbit at 95 degrees east longitude, SES 12 will provide HD and Ultra HD television broadcast services, data relay capacity, and broadband and cellular connectivity across more than 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

"SES-12 was built to meet the dynamic needs of our customers across the Asia-Pacific region, and to empower them to capture massive growth opportunities in their markets," said Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES. "When co-located with SES-8, it will provide incremental high performance capacity and offer greater reliability and flexibility to our video and data customers."

The spacecraft weighs nearly 12,000 pounds — about 5,400 kilograms — with its load of xenon propellant, significantly lighter than a satellite of comparable capability with conventional hydrazine fuel.

ЦитироватьSES-12: Elevating Experiences Today

Written on 25 May 2018

Come 31 May, SES will be launching its newest satellite, SES-12, onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9.

The satellite, when operational, will be elevating the experiences of people, communities and businesses throughout Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. SES-12 is uniquely designed with both state-of-the-art powerful wide beam and high throughput capabilities to provide satellite communications services across the region.

This sophisticated satellite will feature a payload of 6 wide beams and 72 high throughput user spot beams, making SES-12 one of the largest geostationary satellites that SES has ever procured. SES-12 is built by Airbus Defence and Space.

With high throughput capabilities that enable the rapid transmission of massive amounts of data, SES-12 is SES's answer to soaring connectivity demand in the aviation industry, especially across Asia-Pacific, where the number of connected aircraft will increase from more than 1,000 in 2017 to over 5,500 by 2026. The region will be the world's third largest in terms of connected aircraft, after North America and Europe.1

Over the next decade, high throughput satellites (HTS) such as SES-12 are also anticipated to be a driving force behind the steady roll-out of connected vessels and cruise liners. The total number of maritime in-service terminal in Asia will more than double from 73,000 in 2017 to over 175,000 by 2026.2

In the next decade, Asia will witness the largest growth in enterprise VSAT sites at 7% CAGR to reach almost 1 million by 2026.3 Governments who want to bridge the digital divide and launch connectivity programmes will be the key growth driver, followed by banking, and SES-12 will be key in meeting this demand. With over 1 billion people lacking 3G/4G coverage, Asia will lead the cellular backhaul via satellite growth.

SES-12, in combination with SES-8, will reach 18 million TV homes from its 95°E orbital position. The satellite provides pay-TV operators the reliability and scalability to deliver higher quality, richer and more immersive end-user experiences; anytime, anywhere and on any screen. SES-12's spot beams will also enable broadcasters to bring localised video content to specific cities and provinces in a cost-effective manner.

SpaceX has pushed back the launch of the SES 12 communications satellite until shortly after midnight Friday at Cape Canaveral.

The launch company announced the 24-hour delay via Twitter.

The launch on Thursday had been scheduled for a launch window opening at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT) and extending until 2:57 a.m. EDT (0657 GMT). Friday's launch window has not been confirmed, but is expected to be very close to the same time.

Meteorologists at the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron projected a 70 percent probability of weather prohibiting a launch attempt Thursday. Conditions were predicted to marginally improve Friday, with a forecast of a 60 percent chance of weather violating a launch rule.

The prime weather concern in Friday's forecast is with thick clouds over the Cape Canaveral spaceport.

SpaceX is gearing up for the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket with a previously-flown first stage booster carrying the SES 12 communications satellite, an all-electric, multi-band video and data relay platform to serve the Asia-Pacific region.

Liftoff from Cape Canaveral is set for 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT) Friday. The duration of the launch window is expected to be four hours, an extension of the window previously announced.

Weather conditions are expected to be iffy, but anvil and debris clouds from dissipating evening thunderstorms are expected to become less of a threat later in the launch window.
Спойлер
The official outlook issued by the Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron Wednesday suggests a 60 percent probability conditions will violate a launch weather rule during Thursday's early morning window.

"The coverage and duration of the storms will gradually diminish over the next few days as a deep upper-level trough weakens and begins to move east," the Air Force weather team wrote in Wednesday's forecast. "Expect inland storms to migrate towards the Space Coast as steering flow will remain from the south-southwest. Anvil and debris clouds from earlier convection should dissipate through the launch window.

"The primary weather concern is lingering clouds from the storms. Maximum upper-level winds will be from the southwest at 40 knots near 38,000 feet."

The official forecast predicts a few clouds at 2,500 feet, scattered clouds at 12,000 feet, and broken clouds at 22,000 feet, with surface winds from the south at 10 to 15 mph, and a temperature of 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

SES CTO Martin Halliwell: Looking at a 4-hour launch window Monday for #SES12 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/SES12?src=hash). Will stop the countdown at around T-minus 70 minutes, then look for a slot. Will "thread the needle," he says. Satellite is still in hangar. #Falcon9 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Falcon9?src=hash)

Halliwell: Stripped everything off #Falcon9 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Falcon9?src=hash), including landing legs, because it's an expendable mission. "Going straight for the ocean," he says while the #OCISLY (https://twitter.com/hashtag/OCISLY?src=hash) drone ship is in the background. (Event being held at Port Canaveral, where OCISLY is stationed.)

"It's a bold claim," SES CTO Martin Halliwell says on SpaceX's plans to fly #Block5 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Block5?src=hash) #Falcon9 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Falcon9?src=hash) twice within 24 hours. "I wouldn't bet against it."

"Never say never with Elon," he says.

SES CTO Halliwell: "Monster engine" in #Falcon9 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Falcon9?src=hash) upper stage will fire 3 to 5 seconds longer to get #SES12 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/SES12?src=hash) even higher. "Completely changes the dynamics of the project," he says. Those few seconds of burn time could get the satellite up to 7 more years of operational life.

ЦитироватьSpaceX to fly 'hybrid' Falcon 9 with Block 4 and 5 stages on June 4 launch

By Eric Ralph (https://www.teslarati.com/author/eric-ralph/)
Posted on May 31, 2018

According to SES chief technical officer Martin Halliwell, SpaceX intends to "thread the needle" with a unique hybrid Falcon 9 launch of his company's SES-12 communications satellite on June 4th.

In the case of this launch, Halliwell's "needle" refers to unsavory weather conditions present at Florida's Cape Canaveral launch facilities, although weather appears to be improving significantly over the next few days. Originally scheduled for launch on May 24, SES-12 was pushed to May 31, June 1st, and finally June 4th, according to a tweet from SpaceX earlier this morning. Minor difficulties with hardware in the Falcon 9's Block 5 upper stage required additional troubleshooting and were ultimately magnified by the fact that Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's range is technically supposed to be closed for launches at the moment, a shutdown of two or so weeks meant to allow the station's range to conduct routine maintenance and install upgraded hardware (radar, meteorology, helicopter maintenance, avionics, software, etc).
Спойлер
As such, it's unlikely that the minor upper stage hardware issues referenced by SpaceX literally entailed a 72 hour delay. In fact, it's fairly unique for the Eastern Range (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2018/04/spacexs-may-manifest-takes-shape-block-5-debut/) to go so out of their way to accommodate launches well within a closure period – May 28 to June 9 – scheduled months in advance. Once SpaceX's SES-12 mission is completed, the range will likely try to complete necessary maintenance ops.

In a press conference hosted by the satellite operator SES, CTO Martin Halliwell further discussed some of the more technical aspects of the imminent SpaceX launch, waxing poetic about the particular flight-proven rocket's fusion of a Block 4 Falcon 9 first stage and a Block 5 upper stage. With its "monster" Block 5 Merlin Vacuum engine, Halliwell noted that the extra performance provided by the upgraded second stage's higher thrust, the expendable first stage launch profile, and the removal of its grid fins and landing legs could enable as much as seven years of additional operational life for the massive communications satellite.

Although the CTO did not explicitly confirm it, his comments indicate that this launch of the Block 5 upper stage – likely the second after Falcon 9 Block 5's May 11 debut (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-falcon-9-block-5-returns-to-port-gallery/) – may operate at 5% higher thrust for the first time, something briefly discussed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in a press call before the Block 5 debut. In that call, the CEO stated that the upgraded vacuum version of Merlin (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-falcon-9-hundreds-launches-30-rocket-fleet/) would fly with its thrust downrated by 5% to avoid risking a customer's payload while ensuring that the hardware and software upgrades were functioning as intended. It appears that the data and experience provided by the Bangabandhu-1 mission's downrated thrust profile was extremely encouraging, leading SpaceX to open the throttle a bit more with the SES-12 mission, so to speak.

Falcon 9 B1042, the reused booster tasked with launching the second stage and satellite above Earth's atmosphere, previously flew on September 7, 2017, launching the USAF's secretive X-37B spaceplane (https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-squeaks-another-launch-land-ahead-hurricane-irma/) into low Earth orbit. Teslarati photographer Tom Cross will capture the booster's last hurrah around 12:30am on June 4th.

SpaceX has delayed the launch of the SES 12 commercial communications satellite fr om Cape Canaveral until Monday to conduct additional tests on the Falcon 9 rocket's second stage, officials said Thursday.

The liftoff from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad is now scheduled for Monday at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT), the opening of a four-hour launch window.

SpaceX announced the three-day delay in a tweet Thursday.

The launch will mark SpaceX's 11th mission of the year, and the 56th launch of a Falcon 9 rocket since the workhorse commercial booster debuted in June 2010.
Спойлер
SpaceX test-fired the reused first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket for the SES 12 mission May 24 at Cape Canaveral, and teams have encapsulated the commercial telecom payload and attached it to the launcher since the static fire test last week.

The Falcon 9 first stage slated to launch with SES 12 was previously used to send the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane toward orbit from the Kennedy Space Center in September 2017. The upcoming mission will mark the 13th time SpaceX has re-launched a previously-flown booster.

SpaceX does not plan to recover the first stage on next week's mission because the booster was built using an earlier design of the Falcon 9 rocket, known as the "Block 4." The second stage flying on the SES 12 mission is based on the upgraded "Block 5" version of the Falcon 9.

Built by Airbus Defense and Space, the SES 12 communications satellite will connect the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific, and Australia with Ku-band beams, providing video and data relay, television broadcast, and government services. In addition to the six Ku-band payload, SES 12 carries 72 high-throughput beams tailored for broadband connectivity, plus an on-board digital processor to adjust bandwidth to meet changing customer demand.

The Falcon 9 rocket will place the 11,867-pound (5,383-kilogram) spacecraft in an elliptical "supersynchronous" transfer orbit ranging between 182 miles (294 kilometers) at the lowest point to more than 36,000 miles (about 58,500 kilometers) at its highest point.

Plasma thrusters aboard the SES 12 satellite will reshape its orbit to a circular perch over the equator, and maneuver the relay station to a geostationary slot at 95 degrees east longitude, wh ere will join the SES 8 spacecraft and replace the aging NSS 6 satellite.

Forecasters from the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron predict a 70 percent probability of favorable weather during Monday's early morning launch window.

"Afternoon and evening storms are expected to continue over Central Florida for the next several days, though coverage and duration will lesson daily moving into the weekend," forecasters wrote in an outlook issued Thursday. "On Sunday, a weak surface boundary begins to move into the Southeast U.S., increasing the pressure gradient over the Space Coast. Winds will become gusty out of the west-southwest as the front approaches northern Florida during the launch window. The primary weather concern for the launch window on 4 June is liftoff winds."

The Falcon 9 rocket slated to blast off with the SES 12 communications satellite early Monday has been lifted vertical at Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) launcher is set for liftoff at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT) Monday at the opening of a four-hour window.

The weather outlook predicts a 70 percent probability of acceptable weather conditions during Monday's predawn launch window, with the primary concern with gusty surface winds.

"On Sunday, a short wave trough will pull a weak surface boundary into the Southeast, tightening the pressure gradient over the Space Coast," forecasters from the U.S. Air Force's 45th Weather Squadron wrote. "Winds will become gusty out of the southwest as the front approaches northern Florida during the launch window. The primary weather concern is liftoff winds. Maximum upper-level winds will be from the west at 30 knots near 35,000 feet."

Forecasters called for a few clouds at 2,500 feet, scattered clouds at 25,000 feet, westerly winds of 20 to 25 mph, and a temperature of around 76 degrees Fahrenheit at launch time.

June 3, 2018 (https://spaceflightnow.com/2018/06/) | Stephen Clark (https://spaceflightnow.com/author/stephen-clark/)

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for liftoff from Cape Canaveral on Monday, heading due east over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver the SES 12 communications satellite into orbit around 32 minutes later.

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket is poised for launch from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT) Monday at the opening of a four-hour launch window.
Спойлер
Perched atop the rocket is the SES 12 communications satellite, a spacecraft manufactured by Airbus Defense and Space and propelled by plasma thrusters, eliminating the need for large conventional liquid fuel tanks.

SES 12 weighs 11,867 pounds (5,383 kilograms) with its supply of xenon propellant for the electric thrusters, while a satellite with similar capability would weigh up to 10 metric tons if it carried the customary hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide propellants used by conventional spacecraft.

The weight savings allowed SES to fit SES 12 on a smaller, less expensive rocket, and permitted engineers to combine two communications missions into one spacecraft. SES 12 will provide direct-to-home television broadcasts, video and data relay services, and broadband connectivity across the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific, and Australia during its 15-year mission.

SES 12 will use its plasma jets to climb into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator after deployment from the Falcon 9 rocket in an elliptical transfer orbit.

The Falcon 9 rocket launching SES 12 will use a previously-flown "Block 4" version first stage refurbished after a September 2017 mission with the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane. The first stage will not be recovered on the SES 12 mission.

The newly-built upper stage includes upgrades introduced by SpaceX for the "Block 5" version of the Falcon 9 rocket.

The timeline below outlines the launch sequence for the Falcon 9 flight with SES 12.

At this point in the Falcon 9 countdown, the launch team is conducting checks of the rocket ahead of the start of fueling, which is se t to begin at 11:19 p.m. EDT (0319 GMT).

Super-chilled, densified RP-1 fuel will be loaded into the two-stage Falcon 9 rocket first, followed by cryogenic liquid oxygen at 11:54 p.m. EDT (0354 GMT).

Liftoff is timed for 12:29 a.m. EDT (0429 GMT).
Спойлер
After liftoff, the rocket's nine Merlin 1D main engines will pivot their thrust to guide the Falcon 9 east from Cape Canaveral to place the SES 12 communications satellite into a supersynchronous transfer orbit stretching more than 36,000 miles (58,000 kilometers above Earth at its highest point.

Assembled by Airbus Defense and Space in Toulouse, France, the SES 12 satellite carries plasma thrusters for all its in-orbit maneuvers, eliminating the need for large conventional liquid propellant tanks.

"This is basically two satellites in one," said Martin Halliwell, SES' chief technology officer. "If we built this thing years ago, we would have actually built two satellites, but we had the opportunity with Airbus together to bring them into one common bus by using the electric orbit-raising capability."

SES 12 will use its plasma jets to climb into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator after deployment from the Falcon 9 rocket into an initial elliptical transfer orbit.

A small tank of conventional chemical propellant will help nudge the spacecraft out of its initial transfer orbit, but most of the orbit-raising maneuvers will use the plasma thrusters, Halliwell said.

SES 12 will slide into an operating post along the equator at 95 degrees eest longitude for its commercial telecom mission.

"We've actually stripped everything off the first stage, so there are no landing legs on-board," Halliwell said. "This is going straight into the ocean. The first stage is a Block 4 and the upper stage is a Block 5.

"We get a lot of performance from this vehicle," he said in a pre-launch briefing with reporters.

The drawback of using low-thrust plasma jets for orbit-raising is it takes months, instead of weeks, to maneuver a communications satellite into geostationary orbit. But the high-altitude orbit targeted by the Falcon 9 rocket's upper stage will save some of SES 12's own fuel supply, adding years to its expected operational lifetime.

"The good side of all this is it actually extends our life capability from 15 to 22 years, so that's enormous," Halliwell said. "Secondly, it allows us to get into (geostationary) orbit a little bit quicker, so we're going to save about 20 days on our orbit-raising. This allows us to come into service in late January or February of next year."

"This is the most powerful spacecraft that we've ever had built for us," Halliwell said. "The total output power is around about 16 kilowatts on the payload, 19 kilowatts overall. It's really, really big."

This is the initial parking orbit. A 55 second burn will carry the second stage and SES-12 passenger to the desired geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), raising the orbit's apogee to the targeted deployment orbit. SES-12 then uses its SPT-140D thrusters to push on to GEO.

Powerful satellite serving Asia-Pacific and the Middle East will elevate viewing and connectivity experiences to meet diverse needs of video, fixed data, mobility and government customers

Luxembourg, 4 June 2018 – SES announced today that SES-12 was successfully launched onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket fr om Cape Canaveral in Florida, United States, at 00:45 local time.

SES-12, which is uniquely designed with state-of-the-art wide beams and high throughput beams, will join SES-8 at 95 degrees East to meet the diverse needs of video, fixed data, mobility and government customers across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. SES-12 is the latest satellite that SES has launched to that orbital position wh ere it will operate under the authority of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It will replace and augment the services currently being provided on SES' NSS-6 satellite.
Спойлер
Together with SES-8, SES-12 will reach 18 million TV homes from its orbital position. The satellites will provide pay-TV operators the reliability and scalability to elevate viewing experiences by adding more content and delivering higher-quality picture quality to address the ever-increasing audience demand for High Definition (HD) and Ultra HD content.

Like SES-14 and SES-15, which serve the Americas, the SES-12 high throughput payload is SES' solution for enhancing connectivity in the aeronautical and maritime segments across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. SES-12 will also be pivotal in enabling governments to provide connectivity programmes to bridge the digital divide, and in allowing telcos, mobile network operators and internet service providers to deliver more reliable cellular backhaul and faster broadband services.

Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES said, "More content. More immersive viewing experience. Blazing internet speeds. Reliable cell coverage. All of these dynamic customer requirements can now be met with the successful launch of SES-12, which will provide incremental high performance capacity and offer greater reliability and flexibility to our customers."

With six wide beams and 72 high throughput user spot beams, SES-12 is one of the largest geostationary satellites that SES has ever launched. The spacecraft also has a Digital Transparent Processor (DTP) that increases payload flexibility to provide much more customisable bandwidth solutions to SES's customers. The all-electric SES-12 spacecraft was built by Airbus Defence and Space, and will rely on electric propulsion for orbit raising and subsequent in-orbit manoeuvres. SES-12 will join SES' network of seven geostationary satellites and 16 MEO satellites across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

SES-12 MISSION

SpaceX successfully launched the SES-12 satellite to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) on Monday, June 4, 2018 from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. Liftoff occurred at 12:45 a.m. EDT. The SES-12 satellite was deployed about 32 minutes after liftoff.

Falcon 9's first stage for the SES-12 mission previously supported the OTV-5 mission from Launch Complex 39A in September 2017. SpaceX did not attempt to recover Falcon 9's first stage after launch.

ЦитироватьA large, state-of-the-art satellite such as SES-12, which will
weigh 4 tonnes without propellants, would weigh 10 tonnes
if it carried chemical propellant. A 10-tonne weight would
need a complete Ariane 5 launch rocket, which normally
carries two payloads. Even with a full Xenon supply, SES-12
will only weigh 5 tonnes and can be launched on mediumsized
rockets like Falcon 9 or paired with another similar
satellite on Ariane 5.

A powerful commercial communications satellite driven by plasma thrusters rode a reused SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster away from Cape Canaveral early Monday, climbing into orbit to connect companies, homes, airplanes and ships across much of the Eastern Hemisphere.

Cocooned inside the Falcon 9's nose cone, SES 12 satellite lifted off from Cape Canaveral's Complex 40 launch pad at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) Monday, around 16 minutes later than planned.

SpaceX previously delayed the launch from May 31 to conduct additional checks on the launcher.

The 229-foot-tall rocket pivoted its engines to steer east over the Atlantic Ocean, joining the rising waning gibbous moon in a starry sky as the rumble from its nine Merlin main engines rippled across the Florida spaceport.

The Falcon 9 dropped its previously-flown first stage into the Atlantic Ocean nearly three minutes after liftoff, and its modified Merlin upper stage engine powered up to generate more than 200,000 pounds of thrust.

SpaceX did not intend to retrieve the first stage on Monday's mission. It was based on an earlier-generation design no longer in production.

The launcher's payload fairing jettisoned a few moments later, and the second stage engine switched off nearly eight-and-a-half minutes into the mission, beginning a nearly 18-minute coast across the Atlantic Ocean.

The engine reignited at around T+plus 26 minutes as the Falcon 9 and SES 12 sailed over Africa, hurling the payload into an orbit arcing more than 36,000 miles, or 58,000 kilometers, above Earth tilted at an angle of 26 degrees to the equator.

SES officials confirmed ground controllers established contact with SES 12 a few minutes later, indicating the satellite was healthy following launch.

Assembled by Airbus Defense and Space in Toulouse, France, the SES 12 satellite carries plasma thrusters mounted to articulating robotic arms for nearly all its in-orbit maneuvers, eliminating the need for large conventional liquid propellant tanks.

"This is basically two satellites in one," said Martin Halliwell, SES' chief technology officer. "If we built this thing years ago, we would have actually built two satellites, but we had the opportunity with Airbus together to bring them into one common bus by using the electric orbit-raising capability."

SES 12 will use its plasma jets to climb into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator after deployment from the Falcon 9 rocket into the initial elliptical transfer orbit.

A small reservoir of conventional chemical propellant will help nudge the spacecraft out of its initial transfer orbit, but most of the orbit-raising maneuvers will use the plasma thrusters, Halliwell said.

SES 12 will slide into an operating post along the equator at 95 degrees eest longitude for its commercial telecom mission.

The Falcon 9 rocket launching SES 12 used a previously-flown "Block 4" version first stage refurbished after a September 2017 mission with the U.S. Air Force's X-37B spaceplane.

The newly-built upper stage included upgrades introduced by SpaceX for the "Block 5" version of the Falcon 9 rocket.

"We've actually stripped everything off the first stage, so there are no landing legs on-board," Halliwell said before the launch.

"More content. More immersive viewing experience. Blazing internet speeds. Reliable cell coverage," Halliwell said in a post-launch statement. "All of these dynamic customer requirements can now be met with the successful launch of SES 12, which will provide incremental high performance capacity and offer greater reliability and flexibility to our customers."

At 95 degrees east longitude, SES 12 will be co-located with the SES 8 communications satellite, which launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in 2013. SES 12 replaces telecom capacity currently provided by the aging NSS 6 launched by an Ariane 4 rocket in 2002.

The SES 12 and SES 8 satellites together will reach 18 million television homes, beaming HD and Ultra HD programming to customers in the Middle East, South Asia, the Asia-Pacific, and across Australia and neighboring islands.

The high-throughput payload aboard SES 12 will support broadband Internet and data services for remote users, airplane passengers, cruise ships and merchant vessels.

SES 12 will join a growing SES fleet, which includes satellites in geostationary orbit and 16 spacecraft and 16 O3b broadband stations orbiting at a lower altitude of around 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) over the equator.

"This is an incredibly flexible satellite that we're putting into our fleet," said John-Paul Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks. "By the time we get this up there, we're going to have nearly 70 satellites in our entire constellation across both geostationary and medium Earth orbit."

SES 12 has "wide beam coverage from the eastern parts of Europe and eastern parts of Africa all the way over to Australia, and up into the southern parts of Russia," Hemingway said. "It really is great coverage, and of course we've got the very focused high-throughput beams that we can lay down wherever we need to have that capacity."

The launch of SES 12 marks a pause in SES' geostationary fleet expansion and replacement campaign. The company's next geostationary satellite, SES 17, is set for launch in 2020 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.

Four additional O3b satellites are booked to launch into medium Earth orbit in 2019 on a Russian-built Soyuz booster provided by Arianespace, and SES has purchased seven next-generation O3b mPower broadband satellites for launches starting in 2021. Launch arrangements for the O3b mPower craft have not been announced.

The next SpaceX launch is scheduled for late June from Florida with a Dragon supply ship carrying several tons of supplies to the International Space Station.
