China to loft Beidou satellite pair on Sunday with seventh space launch of 2018 (https://gbtimes.com/china-to-loft-beidou-satellite-pair-on-sunday-with-seventh-space-launch-of-2018)ЦитироватьChina will launch a pair of satellites for its Beidou navigation system on Sunday, with a Long March 3B rocket being readied to carry the duo from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre to medium Earth orbit.
Launch from the site in the hills of the southwestern province of Sichuan is expected to take place on February 11, with airspace closures indicating that liftoff will take place around 13:10 local time (05:10 UTC, 00:10 ET).
The satellites will be the 28th and 29th for the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) which is China's own version of the Global Positioning System (GPS) developed by the United States.
Спойлер
The launch will also already be China's seventh of 2018, with the country potentially set to attempt around 40 missions, including government and commercial launches, with the return-to-flight of the Long March 5 and the Chang'e-4 lunar far side mission as highlights.
This will also be the second launch of Beidou satellites in 2018, with a previous duo of satellites launched to medium Earth orbit on January 11.
That mission was noted for a booster from the Long March 3B launch vehicle falling close to a village in Guangxi, with startling footage being captured by locals, and some even approaching the toxic and flaming wreckage.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Group (CASC), the main contractor for the space programme, says it will aim to launch up to 18 Beidou satellites by the end of 2018, most of them in pairs.
China's Beidou navigation system
Beidou is China's own Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), designed to remove reliance on and rival America's GPS, as well as Russia's GLONASS and Europe's Galileo constellations.
As well as civilian applications such as navigation for shipping and road traffic, and mapping and surveying, Beidou will provide the People's Liberation Army assistance from space in targeting, positioning and locating, and synchronising operations.
The system is also being touted as an important part of the Belt and Road initiative, providing coverage to countries involved in the signature project of Chinese president Xi Jinping.
The satellites to be launched are part of the third phase of deployment of Beidou satellites, which will allow the system - which currently offers regional coverage - to provide services globally by 2020.
The satellites are based on a new satellite bus that features a phased array antenna for navigation signals and a laser retroreflector, with a launch mass 1,014 kg, according to Nasaspaceflight.com.
The accuracy, stability and signal strength of the Beidou-3 satellites is improved over previous versions by developments in atomic clocks, laser communications and inter-satellite links.
Lei Fanpei, chairman of CASC, said late last year that the construction of the 35-satellite navigation system – with five in geosynchronous orbit, three in inclined geosynchronous orbits, and 27 in lower, medium Earth orbits - is to be completed by 2020.

ЦитироватьTwin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites sent into orbit by single rocket
Source: Xinhua | 2018-02-12 21:21:03 | Editor: Xiang Bo
XICHANG, Sichuan, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- China sent two satellites into orbit on a single carrier rocket for its domestic BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) on Monday.
The twin satellites, which form a network with four previously launched BeiDou-3 satellites, were the fifth and sixth satellites in the BeiDou-3 family. They entered orbit more than three hours after the launch from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
All of the BeiDou satellites were launched from Xichang and all of the missions were successful, said Dong Chongqing, Party secretary of the launch center.
Set up in 1970, Xichang Satellite Launch Center's major task is to launch geostationary satellites. It has launched more satellites than other centers in China.
The twin satellites were carried by the Yuanzheng-1 upper-stage on the rocket. Yuanzheng-1, or Expedition-1, is an independent aircraft installed on the carrier rocket with the ability of sending one or more satellites into different orbits in space.
The launch was the 267th mission for the Long March rocket family.Спойлер
China will send 18 BeiDou-3 satellites around the end of 2018 with Long March-3A rockets, according to the country's schedule.
Among eight of its 14 planned missions in 2018, the Long March-3A rocket will send twin BeiDou-3 satellites into space, said Cen Zheng, rocket system commander-in-chief of the mission.
"China developed a new generation of platform for navigation satellites that enable a single rocket to send two or more satellites into space in 2010," said Wang Ping, the chief designer of BeiDou-3 family. "The lightweight platform is easy to assemble and versatile, which fits the mission to send satellites on one rocket."
Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper, the BeiDou project was formally launched in 1994. It began to serve China in 2000 and the Asia-Pacific region at the end of 2012.
By around 2020, when the BDS goes global, it will have more than 30 satellites.

Two more Chinese Beidou navigation satellites successfully lifted off aboard a Long March 3B rocket Monday on China's seventh space launch in five weeks.
The Long March 3B rocket and a restartable Yuanzheng upper stage deployed the two Beidou navigation satellites — the 28th and 29th to join China's navigation network — nearly four hours after launch from the Xichang space base in Sichuan province, according to Chinese state media reports.
Propelled by 1.3 million pounds of thrust, the Long March 3B rocket lifted off from the Xichang launch base at 0503 GMT (12:03 a.m. EST) Monday.Спойлер
Four strap-on boosters and a core stage fueled by hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide fired for around two-and-a-half minutes. The Long March 3B dropped the spent booster tanks over Chinese territory as the rocket flew southeast from Xichang, and the launcher's second stage fell into the South China Sea after completing its burn.
A third stage engine placed the two Beidou satellites and the Yuanzheng upper stage into a preliminary elliptical orbit. The upper stage engine was programmed to place the twin payloads into a circular orbit approximately 13,700 miles (22,000 kilometers) above Earth.
Chinese state media confirmed the launch was a success, and U.S. military tracking data showed the Beidou satellites were orbiting on their planned trajectory inclined 55 degrees to the equator.
The satellites launched Monday are the fifth and sixth members of China's third-generation Beidou fleet, joining four similar craft launched since early November.
Named for the Chinese word for the Big Dipper constellation, the Beidou constellation achieved an initial operating capability with coverage over the Asia-Pacific region in 2012. Development of the Beidou program began in 1994.
The first Beidou test satellite launched in 2000. With Monday's mission, China has launched 29 Beidou navigation payloads into orbit, but not all of them remain operational.

When complete, the Beidou system will join the U.S. Air Force's Global Positioning System, Russia's Glonass satellite network, and Europe's Galileo fleet — which is still being deployed — as the world's four navigation services with global reach.
The third-generation satellites now being launched by China feature higher-performance rubidium and hydrogen atomic clocks, inter-satellite links, improved spatial signal accuracy, better compatibility with other countries' navigation satellites, and offer search-and-rescue services, according to a Chinese government release published on the Beidou program's official website.
Chinese officials aim to have 30 Beidou satellites operational by 2020, enough to offer independent global navigation services.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported up to 14 more Beidou satellites are due for launch before the end of 2018.
The completed Beidou constellation will consist of 27 satellites in medium Earth orbits, five in geostationary-type orbits around 22,300 miles (36,800 kilometers) over the equator, and three in inclined geosynchronous orbits that oscillate north and south of the equator.
Monday's flight was the seventh of up to 40 space launches planned by China this year.
Besides further deployments of Beidou satellites, China plans to launch a series of communications and Earth observation payloads for commercial and military users.
China has also scheduled the launch of the Chang'e 4 lunar probe later this year. Chang'e 4 will attempt to make the first landing on the far side of the moon.

Monday saw the seventh orbital launch of the year by China, with a Long March-3B/YZ-1 orbiting a new pair of navigation satellites. The launch took place at 05:03 UTC from the LC2 Launch Complex of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan province. It took over four hours to complete the mission.
It is expected that the Beidou-3MEO3 (Beidou-28 ) and Beidou-3MEO4 (Beidou-29) satellites were onboard. The MEO satellites are the Medium Earth Orbit component of the third phase of the Chinese Beidou (Compass) satellite navigation system. The satellites are part of a fleet that will expand the system to a global navigation coverage.
The satellites are using a new bus that features a phased array antenna for navigation signals and a laser retroreflector, with a launch mass 1,014 kg. Spacecraft dimensions are noted to be 2.25 by 1.0 by 1.22 meters. Usually, the satellites reside in a 21,500 – 21,400 km nominal orbit at 55.5 degrees.
The previous launch on the series took place on January 12th, when the Long March-3B/Y1 (Y45/Y5) launch vehicle orbited the Beidou-3MEO7 (Beidou-26) and Beidou-3MEO8 (Beidou-27) satellites. On November 5, 2017, the Long March-3B/Y1 (Y46/Y4) orbited the Beidou-3MEO1 (Beidou-24) and the Beidou-3MEO2 (Beidou-25) satellites.
