China will next week carry out the first of around 40 space launches it has planned for 2018, with the Yuanwang-6 space tracking ship setting sail for open waters to assist missions.

First of many Beidou launches

Following this, a Long March 3B with a Yuanzheng-1 upper stage will lift a pair of Beidou-3 GNSS navigation satellites to medium Earth orbit, this time for the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwest province of Sichuan.

According the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), more than 10 and up to 18 Beidou satellites could be launched during 2018.

The Yuanwang-6 tracking ship set sail from harbour in Jiangyin city on the Yangtze River on Monday to support the mission, with launch set for 23:00 on January 11.

The satellite navigation system, China's answer to GPS (US), GLONASS (Russia) and Galileo (Europe) systems, will provide services for countries involved the Belt and Road initiative and form a complete global satellite navigation system by 2020.

"The intensive launches will pose a great challenge. We must exercise strict control over quality specifications to ensure each of them is a success," Yang said.

Aiming to promote international use, China will move to incorporate BeiDou into the international satellite navigation system, enhance international cooperation, and make it compatible with GPS from the United States, Russia's GLONASS, and the European Union's Galileo, he said.

The satellites and the rocket for Friday's launch were developed by the innovation academy for microsatellites at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, respectively.

Named after the Chinese term for the Big Dipper, the BeiDou project was formally launched in 1994. It began to serve China in 2000 and the Asia-Pacific region at the end of 2012. By around 2020, when the BDS goes global, it will have more than 30 satellites.
