EUTELSAT 172B in final testing
[Toulouse, 23/01/2017] - Construction of EUTELSAT 172B, the first high-power all-electric telecommunications satellite built in Europe, is now complete at the Airbus satellite assembly facilities in Toulouse. The fully fledged satellite for Eutelsat is now undergoing final testing before it is sent to Kourou, French Guiana, for an Ariane 5 launch scheduled in April.
EUTELSAT 172B breaks now ground as the first high-power satellite in the 3 tonne class. The satellite combines electric power of 13 kW with a launch weight of only 3,500 kg. This highly innovative satellite will host three distinct payloads that will strengthen Eutelsat's capability to serving Asia-Pacific markets: a C-band payload, a regular Ku-band payload and a high throughput payload specifically designed for in-flight connectivity along Pacific air corridors.
EUTELSAT 172B is based on the highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform from Airbus Defence and Space, in its latest EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) evolution. This version relies exclusively on electric propulsion for initial orbit raising and all on-station manoeuvres, with the consequent reduction in mass enabling the satellite to be launched in the Ariane 5 lower position, resulting in lower launch costs.

EUTELSAT 172B will deliver increased capacity for fast-growing applications that include in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video distribution and government services. It will be located at 172° East, a key neighbourhood providing exceptional Asia-Pacific reach over land and sea, from Alaska to Australia. Eutelsat's new satellite will replace the EUTELSAT 172A satellite to provide service continuity and improved performance via C and Ku-band payloads connected to a range of footprints.
Setting a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity over the Pacific
EUTELSAT 172B will also feature a new Ku-band multi-beam payload delivering 1.8 Gbps of throughput to serve the world's fastest-growing region for air traffic. The Asia Pacific represents the largest opportunity for in-flight entertainment and connectivity services, with over 8,000 aircraft to be delivered to the region by 2034.
The customised High Throughput payload on EUTELSAT 172B will be a major growth platform for in-flight connectivity, notably Panasonic Avionics Corporation, one of the leading suppliers of in-flight entertainment and connectivity services for commercial airlines. Eleven elliptical spotbeams will enable Panasonic to bridge the West coast of North America to Asia, and down to Australia, supporting rapid air traffic growth in the region and surges in bandwidth use across densely used flight paths.

Innovations abound EUTELSAT 172B satellite will be the first satellite to fly new features and capabilities devised by Europe's industry.
[/li]- The key enabling technology for the inflight connectivity mission is the Multi-Port Amplifier (MPA) that will dynamically distribute power between the 11 spotbeams in direct response to surges in capacity on-board aircraft.
- EUTELSAT 172B will also use innovative deployable robotic arms to orientate and control thrust direction during the approximately four-month ride to geostationary orbit and for station-keeping during its minimum 15 year life.
- The satellite will also fly structural components made with 3D-printing (Additive Manufacturing) techniques that reduce the cost and time required to build spacecraft parts.
EUTELSAT 172B is expected to enter service in third quarter 2017, replacing EUTELSAT 172A that will be relocated to another orbital position.

March 15, 2017 - Press release
All-electric propulsion for orbit-raising and on-station manoeuvers inaugurates significant mass savings on this class of mission
Toulouse, 15/03/2017 – EUTELSAT 172B, the first high power all-electric telecommunications satellite, is now ready for shipment on 20 March from the Airbus satellite assembly facility in Toulouse to Kourou, French Guiana for Eutelsat, one of the world's leading satellite operators. The satellite will be launched into orbit on an Ariane 5 in April, and will provide enhanced telecommunications, in-flight broadband and broadcast services for the Asia-Pacific region.
We are the first company to demonstrate full electric propulsion for satellites of this size and capacity," said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems at Airbus. "With this spacecraft we are clearly setting a new benchmark - enabling powerful and complex satellites to be launched in the most cost efficient manner."
EUTELSAT 172B combines electric power of 13 kW with a launch weight of only 3,500 kg. It hosts three distinct payloads that will strengthen Eutelsat's capabilities across Asia-Pacific markets: a C-band payload, a regular Ku-band payload and a high throughput Ku-band payload designed for in-flight connectivity along Pacific air corridors. The satellite also incorporates other state-of-the-art features, in particular the flexibility to dynamically distribute power between the 11 elliptical beams in the high throughput payload.
"Using electric propulsion for initial orbit raising and all on-station manoeuvres has led to a substantial weight reduction, enabling the satellite to be launched in the Ariane 5 lower position and offering more competitive launch costs," said Arnaud de Rosnay, Head of Telecommunications Satellites at Airbus.
Underpinning EUTELSAT 172B is Airbus' highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform in its latest EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) evolution.
Innovative deployable robotic arms will be used to orientate the satellite's electric propulsion thrusters and to control thrust direction and attitude as needed during the different phases of the mission. A proprietary network of ground stations around the world will allow Airbus engineers to control orbit raising operations until the satellite reaches geostationary orbit.
The development of Airbus' Eurostar all electric platform has been supported by ESA and space agencies of European countries, in particular in France by CNES in the framework of the PIA programme (Plan d'Investissements d'Avenir).

ViaSat-2 – Shattering the Coverage or Capacity Myth
With a planned launch in the first quarter of calendar 2017, ViaSat-2 is designed to combine both deep, high-capacity bandwidth and wide coverage, and flexibility to move bandwidth to where demand requires it. Challenging the conventional wisdom that our system had focused only on total capacity at the expense of wide area coverage, ViaSat-2 is designed to double the bandwidth economics advantage of ViaSat-1, double the throughput, and provide seven times the coverage.
Providing Access to the Best Available Network Worldwide
ViaSat-2 will be our first big step toward spreading high-capacity coverage worldwide for fixed broadband and mobility services for aviation and maritime. We already operate a global Ku-band network for thousands of mobile customers, including government and commercial aircraft as well as sea-going vessels.
Working with partners, we're now overlaying high-capacity coverage on our network in a similar manner to the build-out of 4G LTE mobile wireless on top of previous 2G and 3G services. As part of the plan, ViaSat-2 will include coverage bridging the North Atlantic, adding contiguous high-capacity coverage over all of North America, Europe, and the Mediterranean basin together with our partner Eutelsat. We invite you to become a partner in your part of the world.
To enable customers to seamlessly gain access to the "best available network" as they roam, we're now offering the first combination Ku/Ka terminals.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Protests roiling the South American home of Europe's primary spaceport prompted Airbus Defence and Space to send Europe's first high-power, all-electric satellite back to France until Arianespace resumes launching.
Airbus flew the Eutelsat-172b satellite to Cayenne, French Guiana last last month in anticipation of its upcoming launch.
But Arianespace has suspended launches from the Guiana Space Centre as labor strikes and civil protests have spread throughout the French overseas department, blocking roads and disrupting normal commerce.
"We decided with Airbus that under the circumstances it was best to bring [Eutelsat-172b] back to Toulouse," Eutelsat spokeswoman Vanessa O'Connor told SpaceNews April 3. "It is now stored at Airbus and we are waiting for a new launch date from Arianespace."
Airbus Defence and Space spokesperson Ralph Heinrich said Eutelsat-172b arrived back in Toulouse, France, March 30.
Protests that began in late March over working and living conditions prevented Arianespace from moving its Ariane 5 rocket to the launch zone (http://spacenews.com/kourou-labor-discord-further-postpones-ariane-5-launch/) in advance of a March 21 launch of Brazil's SGDC satellite and KT Corporation's Koreasat-7 satellite. After calling two 24-hour delays, Arianespace stood down March 23 without setting a new date for flight VA236.
Eutelsat-172b is next in line for an Ariane 5 launch.
CNES's Joel Barre declined to comment on the state of affairs at the spaceport.
According to France 24, activists in French Guiana are demanding 2.5 billion euros ($2.7 billion) from France, having rejected a 1.085 billion-euro aid package over the weekend. French Guiana has a population of about 250,000.
Unrest in the French territory is now compounding launch delays for Arianespace, which has 12 launches to complete this year.
For Eutelsat, the delays are likely to push back the expected in service date for Eutelsat-172b, a satellite the operator ordered ahead of its original schedule thanks to the backing of Panasonic Avionics as an anchor customer for in-flight connectivity in the Asia Pacific. Eutelsat-172b is a tri-band satellite the operator ordered in June 2014 as an early follow on for Eutelsat-172A.
As an all-electric satellite, O'Connor said Eutelsat-172b is expected to require four months of orbit raising to get from its drop-off point to its geostationary orbit some 36,000 kilometers above the equator.
Arianespace, however, could trim Eutelsat-172b's transit time by delivering an exemplary launch.
Eutelsat's first all-electric satellite, the Boeing-built Eutelsat 115 West B, entered service a month early thanks to an extremely accurate SpaceX Falcon 9 launch.

Open dams except at the space center
If the group "Pou la Gwiyann dékolé", which is driving the social movement initiated for almost a month, announced Thursday evening the opening of most of the barriers for the weekend of Easter, he warned that the dam Roundabout close to the Guyanese Space Center (CSG) will remain in place. The space center, the economic showcase of the territory, is considered by the collective as a symbol of the persistent inequalities in this overseas territory.
Three suspended launch campaigns
The blockages in progress "interrupted three launch campaigns for five different customers: the Brazilian government and the commercial operators ktsat (Korea), SES (Luxembourg), Viasat (United States), Eutelsat (France)," argued Stéphane Israel, in its letter of 12 April to the four parliamentarians fr om Guyana.
"Two different launchers - Ariane and Soyuz - are involved in these campaigns, as well as three satellite manufacturers: Thales Alenia Space, Airbus, Boeing," he also observed. The blockages have already delayed more than a month the launch scheduled for March 21 for Brazil and Korea. This lost month can cost millions of euros of additional costs for Arianespace and the manufacturers of CSG, "said Stéphane Israël. (See below the report of Guyane 1st on the difficulties of Arianespace).

Arianespace in the deadlock
Arianespace in pain
According to him, "the image of Arianespace and the availability of its launch services may suffer from this situation." "If the blockade were to persist, the launch of 12 launches in 2017 would be threatened, which would have serious financial consequences," warned the CEO of Arianespace, in his letter also addressed to Rodolphe Alexandre, president of the Territorial Collectivity Of Guyana. "The current situation is undermining Arianespace, in a context wh ere competition is more intense than ever," he added.
Stéphane Israël pointed out that "1,700 employees" work on the basis for Arianespace, Cnes, and 36 companies grouped within the Union of Employers of the Space Base (UEBS). Underlining that "our activity generates 9,000 jobs in total" and "represents 40% of the private sector payroll in Guyana", he said that "what is at stake is simply the permanence of these jobs in Guyana ".
"As with any activity ... the link between the space base and the host territories can be strengthened, but there is no doubt that space is an economic lung for Guyana," he said.

Arianespace
Arianespace

PARIS — The continued shutdown of Europe's spaceport threatens to scuttle launch-service provider Arianespace's plans for 2017 — a year when it hoped to distinguish itself fr om its competitors.
It is also a problem for those commercial customers whose planned launch dates in March and April are now scrapped, including Eutelsat and its 172B satellite customers, Panasonic Avionics; ViaSat Inc.'s business-crucial ViaSat-2; and SES's SES-15.
As of April 17, it was unclear whether the protest movement's decision to allow shopping over the long Easter weekend by opening roadblocks that have choked economic activity in French Guiana signaled an end to the protests, or whether circulation would be paralyzed again on April 18.
Roadblocks lifted for Easter — except for spaceport
In an indication of how the Guiana Space Center has come to symbolize the French state, the protesters maintained a roadblock of the spaceport access road while opening the others to traffic for the weekend.
The grounding of Europe's launch vehicles compounds an already stressed global commercial launch sector. Launches of Russia's Proton rocket have been suspended since June for technical defects, and a late-May return to flight has not been confirmed.
SpaceX's Falcon 9, recovering fr om a September failure, is juggling a crowded manifest. Whether it can ramp operations to its long-promised twice-per-month cadence is uncertain. China's Long March rocket family, in robust health, remains a minor player on the market because of a U.S. ban on launching U.S.-built satellite parts from China.
The Guiana Space Center, on the northeast coast of South America, has seen brief labor-related shutdowns before. Local law enforcement typically does not intervene, out of concern for creating martyrs and enflaming situations that end quietly after negotiations. This has worked in the past.
A broad-based protest, but is support eroding?
But not this time. A work stoppage March 20 at the spaceport, which prevented the Ariane 5 rocket from being rolled out to its launch pad for a planned March 21 launch, was followed by a broad movement in French Guiana protesting high crime rates, illegal immigration and the general degradation of conditions in the French overseas department.
The protest has been led not by a labor union but by a diverse collective that sometimes appears to speak with several voices. Local politicians, surprised by the movement's power, have struggled to keep up with it.
After initial days of tacit support for the movement, businesses that have been unable to function for weeks have begun to call for the movement to end. Whether local law-enforcement authorities will use these signs of strike fatigue to forcibly remove the trucks blocking the roadways was unclear.
A visit by French government ministers to negotiate an end to the crisis proved fruitless. The ministers represent a government that will leave office in May after elections and could not meet the protesters' demand of a 3-billion-euro ($3.2-billion) economic aid package.
French President Francois Hollande, who is not running for re-election and whose relevance to French politics is declining by the day, offered to meet a delegation from French Guiana in Paris. The offer was refused as too vague.
The protesters received support from the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, who said in a speech that "all my sympathy is on their side, because in Guiana, as elsewh ere, we have committed the error of inattention. And Guiana is not the only territory beyond continental Europe that finds itself in this situation. Many others, by the way, don't understand that these regions are fully part of Europe."
One French space industry official with long experience in French Guiana, while expressing irritation at Juncker's statement — the European Commission's negligible support for the spaceport is a sore point between Brussels and Paris — said it nonetheless illustrated the problem.
"There has been this idea that being in a French overseas department, the Guianese can hope for a lifestyle identical to that of metropolitan France. But that's impossible. This is South America — Brazil on one side, Suriname on the other, and an uncontrollable border.
"What's needed now is a political solution that accepts this reality while doing what we can to improve the life of the local population," this official said.
A modern spaceport in the Third World: What could go wrong?
A flourishing space-launch facility in a Third World setting has become a rallying cry for some of the activists, who have used the spaceport's strategic importance to the French government as a means of pressure.
Protesters conducted an all-night sit-in in a space center conference room after its director, Didier Faivre, admitted he could do nothing more than promise he would convey their message to CNES headquarters.
Protestors apparently hoped the power of the Guiana Space Center Director was such that he could pressure the French government to meet the demands for increased aid.
During this period, Arianespace and CNES have had zero leverage, admitting privately that they have no idea how long the paralysis will last.
CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, a former chief executive of Arianespace, told an April 4 session at the National Space Symposium in Colorado that he was "very confident that we will resume with the launches in the coming days."
Industry officials said that it would take CNES and Arianespace 10 days to prepare for a launch once the roadblock have been cleared and transit to and from the spaceport, and to French Guiana's airport, returns to normal.
Arianespace had planned six launch campaigns between January and April, and a record 12 launches for the full year: seven heavy-lift Ariane 5 rockets, three medium-lift Europeanized Russian Soyuz vehicles and two Vega small-satellite launch campaigns.
That schedule assumed a launch-free month of May. But with late-March and April launches of two Ariane 5 rockets and a Soyuz — all carrying commercial telecommunications satellites — now out of reach, May will be a catch-up month.
Even this scenario assumes the demonstrators accept the loss of face that would follow any decision to end their movement without a further government concessions beyond the 1 billion euros already promised.
Arianespace's appeal to French Guiana parliamentarians
Arianespace Chief Executive Stephane Israel on April 12 wrote the four French parliament members from French Guiana, reminding them that Arianespace's financial health is good for the territory.
"The loss of a month of activity is estimated to cost millions of euros in additional charges for Arianespace and the industry working at [the Guiana Space Center], and the customers are exposed [to costs] as well," Israel said.
"If the roadblocks continue, plans to conduct 12 launches in 2017 will be threatened, which would have heavy financial consequences for Arianespace and for the thousands of employees working at or for the spaceport.
Israel said 9,000 jobs in French Guiana are directly or indirectly supported by the space-launch activity, representing 40 percent of French Guiana's entire private-sector work force.
Arianespace did not immediately respond to requests for clarification about the "millions of euros" in additional charges — whether the revenue in question was lost or just deferred, and whether Arianespace and its contractors have insurance policies in place to cover events of this nature.
Given the state of the global launch market, Arianespace's customers for the most part are unable to take their business elsewh ere. They're just as stuck as the Ariane 5 rocket blocked in its final assembly building since March 20.

ViaSat-2: Getting Ready for Launch
A question the ViaSat program team is often asked is: what happens leading up to a satellite launch? Let's take you through the ViaSat-2 journey – now that we've shipped the satellite from the Boeing Satellite Systems International factory in El Segundo, Calif., to the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana. As you'll learn, a lot happens in the weeks leading up to its ride into space.
Shipping
As you can imagine, it's not easy to move a satellite that weighs over 9,000 pounds and is roughly the size of a school bus; especially when the launch base is in a rather remote location, such as French Guiana.
So, in order to transport such a large piece of equipment over such a great distance, you need a really big container and an even larger airplane. ViaSat-2 was so large that Boeing had to build a new container to accommodate the satellite. The container is designed to physically protect the satellite from damage, but also to keep the environment clean and the temperature and humidity within specified ranges. These are not just large crates, but very sophisticated environmental control chambers. For ViaSat-2, we chartered the largest available cargo plane in the world, the Ukrainian-built and Russian-operated Antonov AN-124. The satellite containers are carefully designed to fit in the cargo bay of an AN-124.
One thing to note is when we ship a satellite to the launch facility, we don't just ship the satellite, we also ship test equipment, handling hardware, fueling gear, and office equipment, among other items. Loading the container on an AN-124 takes about 4-6 hours, as does unloading it. The trip from the satellite factory to a launch base is about a 2-3 day trip. For ViaSat-2, the AN-124 flew from Los Angeles (LAX) to Houston and then direct to Cayenne, French Guiana. ViaSat-2 departed LAX on March 16, 2017.
Launch Campaign
A typical launch campaign usually spans about 30 days from satellite arrival to launch. The ViaSat-2 launch campaign is scheduled for 39 days from satellite arrival to launch, as Arianespace has two other launches scheduled at the Guiana Space Center (known by its French acronym as CSG) between the time ViaSat-2 arrives and its official launch date.
The other major phases of a typical launch campaign are:
[/li]- Unpack: This is unpacking the satellite, as well as the other test and fueling equipment we shipped.
- Test: Once the satellite is unpacked, we run the satellite through a series of tests to make sure there is no latent damage and that everything still works as intended. It's very important to verify that we have a healthy satellite prior to fueling it. Once we fuel it, we cannot easily offload the fuel and decontaminate the satellite propulsion system.
Fuel: Once we've verified the satellite is completely healthy, we will load the chemical fuel onboard. ViaSat-2 has a hybrid propulsion system, which means it is using traditional chemical propulsion as well as electric propulsion. The electric propulsion burns xenon gas, which is an inert gas. Because it's inert, the xenon is loaded at the factory before shipment to the launch site. So, at the launch base, we have to load hydrazine fuel and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer. Both of these chemicals are highly toxic and hazardous, so on fueling days, the facility is cleared of all but essential personnel.
Mate to Launch Vehicle
Up to this point in the launch campaign, we've been working on our own, and apart from some blackout days due to other hazardous operations or other launches, we've been pretty much free to work on our own schedule. That changes as soon as combined operations start. Combined operations begin when we mate the satellite to the payload adapter (the payload adapter is the structure that holds the satellite to the rocket). From this point on, the satellite team and the launch vehicle teams are integrated and all subject to a joint schedule.
For ViaSat-2, combined operations will start approximately six (6) days before launch when the satellite goes onto the payload adapter and will end upon conclusion of the launch. From this point on, there will be a very carefully scripted sequence of events that will see the satellite joined to the adapter, then mated to the Sylda (the dual payload carrying structure), encapsulated within the payload fairing, mated to the rocket, roll-out to the launch pad, launch rehearsal and finally, launch.
Launch
Launch days are inevitably long days. The initial call to stations is usually 10-12 hours ahead of the scheduled liftoff time. During this time, we'll follow a very carefully developed script and sequence of events for both the rocket and the satellite. We'll power-up the satellite and perform some health checks to ensure the satellite is still healthy. The integrated countdown sequence will progress and we'll receive weather updates and finally, during the terminal count, we'll give a final go or no-go for launch. For ViaSat-2, the last point at which we can abort the launch is 7 seconds prior to ignition of the first stage core engine.
The ViaSat-2 mission will take less than 30 minutes from liftoff to separation. Once the satellite separates from the rocket, the next major event is acquisition, which is the point at which the satellite first communicates with, and accepts, commands from a ground station. At this point, we consider the mission to be successful.

The basic three-stage Soyuz launcher for Flight VS17 is raised into position in the ELS launch zone, where it was fitted with the SES-15 payload and Fregat upper stage.
For the company's next liftoff, a medium-lift Soyuz is now in the Spaceport's ELS launch zone, fitted with its SES-15 telecommunications satellite payload. Undergoing the countdown for a morning departure on Thursday, May 18, this launch is designated Flight VS17 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – signifying the 17th mission with the Russian-built workhorse vehicle since it entered service at the Spaceport in 2011.
Flight VS17 will mark Arianespace's fifth mission so far in 2017, following two launches with the heavy-lift Ariane 5, and one each utilizing Soyuz and the light-lift Vega.
Preparing for the next two Ariane 5 flights
Elsewhere at the Spaceport, the next Ariane 5 has moved fr om the Launcher Integration Building to the Final Assembly Building, wh ere a dual payload of the Viasat-2 and Eutelsat E172B telecommunications satellites will be integrated. This mission is designated Flight VA237, denoting the 237th flight with an Ariane launcher since the family of European-built vehicles began Spaceport operations in 1979.

Activity also has begun for the subsequent Ariane 5 launch, VA238, which will loft the Hellas-Sat 3/Inmarsat S relay satellite and the GSAT-17 telecommunications spacecraft for the Indian Space Research Organisation.
GSAT-17 arrived in French Guiana this week aboard a chartered cargo jetliner that landed at Cayenne's Félix Eboué Airport. Separately, elements for Flight VA238's Ariane 5 launch vehicle were delivered to Kourou's Pariacabo port by the MN Toucan roll-on/roll-off transport ship, completing a trans-Atlantic sea voyage that also carried launcher components for Arianespace's next Vega mission.

What Happens After ViaSat 2 Launches: Step 1. Orbit Raising
First, a bit about orbital mechanics....
A rocket launching a commercial geostationary satellite generally leaves the satellite in what is known as a transfer orbit. These orbits may have apogees (high points) at geosynchronous altitudes, known as a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), above geosynchronous altitudes, known as a Super-Synchronous Transfer Orbit (SSTO), or with altitudes below geosynchronous altitudes, known as a Sub-Synchronous Transfer Orbit. From whichever orbit the rocket leaves the satellite in, it is up to the satellite to move itself to its final geostationary orbit.
Generally speaking, all transfer orbits have a number of elements in common:
[/li]- They're elliptical – there is generally a significant difference between apogee and perigee.
- They're inclined – geostationary satellites, like ViaSat-2, operate over the equator at 0° inclination, relative to the equator. Almost all transfer orbits are significantly inclined relative to the equator.
That being said, following launch, a satellite has to circularize its orbit and eliminate any remaining inclination prior to being able to provide service to customers. These maneuvers are accomplished through firing the satellite's onboard thrusters. In the case of ViaSat-2, the satellite uses its chemical propulsion system to circularize its orbit and then uses its electric propulsion to remove inclination and perform all station-keeping.
The differences between chemical and electric propulsion are significant in a number of ways, including:
[/li]- Mass of fuel – the fuel for chemical propulsion is much heavier and bulkier than electric propulsion for the equivalent work performed.
- Thrust – chemical propulsion provides much higher thrust than electric propulsion.
- Fuel efficiency – electric propulsion is much more efficient than chemical propulsion.
Within the last few years, fully electric satellites have become a reality. This breakthrough technology allows a significant mass reduction in satellites without sacrificing payload capabilities. This is incredibly important because it allows the use of a smaller and more cost-effective rocket to launch a satellite just as capable as a heretofore large satellite.
With ViaSat-2, we are performing a large portion of the orbit raising electrically as we didn't look to reduce launch mass, but instead our goal was to increase the payload capability. In other words, we increased capacity for the same launch mass. ViaSat-3 will utilize electric propulsion exclusively, thus allowing an even greater payload as a fraction of total launch mass.
One Critical DifferenceOne significant difference to electric propulsion is its extremely low thrust, which means it takes the satellite longer to reach its orbital slot. The difference is like comparing the acceleration capabilities of the most powerful Ferrari to that of a Prius. The Ferrari will out accelerate the Prius at the expense of fuel economy. The Prius will accelerate slowly, but more efficiently and will continue to build momentum over time. That's what electric propulsion is about – building momentum over time.
Instead of taking about two weeks to complete orbit-raising, which was the case with ViaSat-1, it will take several months for ViaSat-2 to reach its final orbital destination. The tradeoff is that we're going to have a satellite with over double the capacity of ViaSat-1 without having to resort to a much larger and more expensive rocket to launch it.

Arianespace to serve global connectivity for ViaSat Inc. and Eutelsat
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/223111.jpg)
For its sixth launch of the year, and the third Ariane 5 mission in 2017 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, Arianespace will orbit two satellites: ViaSat-2 for ViaSat Inc.; and EUTELSAT 172B for Eutelsat.
This mission – the 237th overall by an Ariane launcher – will mark a new all-time Arianespace record for a total payload weight orbited: 10,865 kg., including a net mass at liftoff of 9,969 kg. for the two satellites.
ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B are the 558th and 559th satellites to be launched by Arianespace.
With this 289th mission by the Arianespace family of launchers (Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega), Arianespace is serving global connectivity on Earth.
The launch will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.
The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.
is the first ViaSat satellite to be launched by Arianespace.
ViaSat Inc., a new customer for Arianespace and its Ariane 5 launch vehicle, provides international communities with broadband internet connectivity, accessible on land, at sea and in the air, at competitive rates in relation to other satellite or terrestrial services.
The ViaSat-2 satellite system should bring considerable improvements in terms of speed, lower costs and extended broadband coverage within its footprint, as well as along the main aeronautical and maritime routes linking North America and Europe (Atlantic Ocean).
ViaSat-2 will also provide nearly twice the capacity offered by previous generations of ViaSat satellites, along with seven times as much coverage.
Positioned at 70° West, ViaSat-2 will provide throughput of approximately 300 Gbps in Ka-band over its coverage zone, which includes North and Central America, plus the Caribbean, northern South America, and aeronautical and maritime routes in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.
ViaSat-2 was built by Boeing in El Segundo, California, using a 702HP platform.
EUTELSAT 172BСпойлер
will be the 32nd satellite launched by Arianespace for Eutelsat. Both companies have worked side-by-side since 1983, when Arianespace launched the Eutelsat-1 F1 satellite. Including this upcoming launch, more than half of Eutelsat's satellites will have been orbited by Arianespace.
Eutelsat is one of the world's leading and most experienced operators of communications satellites. The company provides capacity on 39 satellites to clients that include broadcasters and broadcasting associations; pay-TV operators; video, data and Internet service providers; enterprises and government agencies.
EUTELSAT 172B will deliver increased capacity for fast-growing applications that include in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video distribution and government services. It will be located at 172° East, a key neighborhood providing exceptional Asia-Pacific reach over land and sea, from Alaska to Australia.
EUTELSAT 172B is the first all-electric telecommunications satellite built in Europe. This key enabling technology has been implemented by Airbus in Toulouse, using the new all-electric Eurostar E3000 EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) platform.

What Happens After ViaSat 2 Launches: Step 2. In-Orbit Test
After we have designed, built and launched a satellite into space, and it has reached its geostationary orbital slot, we do not immediately call it operational. In fact, we commence the next phase of the process, known as In-Orbit Test (IOT), which evaluates the health of the satellite and characterizes its performance post launch.
IOT is the last major test on the satellite before it goes into service and is necessary for a number of reasons:- To make sure that the satellite meets all performance requirements in our contract with the satellite provider (in the case of ViaSat-2 that would be Boeing). If it doesn't, then there are contractual remedies for that.
- To make sure that nothing broke during launch or orbit raising phases.
- To characterize the satellite's actual, on orbit performance so that we more acutely determine the services that the satellite can provide to our customers.
In IOT, we thoroughly test all bus and payload systems and compare the results to the ground test results performed by Boeing prior to launch, in order to determine overall health and performance.
Additionally, we'll perform antenna mapping where the satellite is pitched and rolled to move each beam through a ground station so that we can measure its Radio Frequency (RF) performance. The trick here is to capture as many beams on each pitch or roll cut to minimize the time and fuel necessary to perform the cuts, but still characterize each beam.
Finally, once IOT is complete, the satellite provider will compile all of the data and will hold an IOT review with ViaSat. The goal of the review is to declare the satellite to be healthy and specification compliant. Once this occurs, the satellite provider will hand over control of the satellite to ViaSat.
At this point, the satellite is ready to deliver high-speed, high-quality broadband internet service.

Arianespace's Ariane 5 is "go" for liftoff on June 1 with the ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B satellite passengers
The sixth Arianespace launch of 2017 is approved for liftoff on June 1 fr om the Spaceport in French Guiana, with the heavy-lift Ariane 5 now complete with its dual-satellite payload of ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B.
The authorization for this week's mission – designated Flight VA237 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – followed today's Launch Readiness Review, which confirmed the "go" status for Ariane 5, its two spacecraft passengers, the Spaceport infrastructure and the network of tracking stations.
Flight VA237's dual payload is integrated in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, with EUTELSAT 172B positioned atop Ariane 5's core stages (at left), followed by the lowering of the "upper composite," consisting of ViaSat-2 and the SYLDA dispenser system, protected by the launcher's payload fairing.
Flight VA237's Ariane 5 is now ready for rollout from the Final Assembly Building, wh ere ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B were integrated on the launcher, to the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.
Liftoff will commence as soon as possible in a one-hour launch window that opens at 8:45 p.m. in French Guiana (between 23:45 and 00:45 Universal Time, during the night of June 1 to June 2).
ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B will be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit on a mission lasting just under 42 minutes.
Released first will be ViaSat-2, which is expected to bring considerable improvements in terms of speed, lower costs and extended broadband coverage within its footprint, which includes North and Central America, plus the Caribbean, northern South America, and the aeronautical and maritime routes in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe. As a global broadband services and technology company, ViaSat operates from corporate headquarters in Carlsbad, California.
ViaSat-2 was built by Boeing in El Segundo, California, using a 702HP platform, and will be positioned at 70 deg. West.
EUTELSAT 172B's deployment by Ariane 5 will complete Arianespace's Flight VA237. Operating at an orbital position of 172 deg. East for Asia-Pacific reach over land and sea from Alaska to Australia, the relay platform will deliver increased capacity for fast-growing applications that include in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video distribution and government services. This satellite will join the fleet of Paris-based Eutelsat, a leading satellite operator in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Using the new all-electric Eurostar E3000 EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) platform assembled by Airbus in Toulouse, France, EUTELSAT 172B is the initial all-electric telecommunications satellite built in Europe – and the first orbited by Ariane 5.
Flight VA237 maintains Arianespace's busy launch schedule in 2017, during which the company is targeting a total of 12 flights using its heavy-lift Ariane 5, medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega vehicles. The five missions already performed this year have utilized two Ariane 5s, two Soyuz launchers and one Vega.

Ariane 5 rolls out for Arianespace's heavy-lift mission with ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/223107.jpg)
The Ariane 5 for Flight VA237 moves into position at the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.
The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's sixth mission overall in 2017 is now at the launch zone, ready for a June 1 evening departure from the Spaceport in French Guiana to inject the dual-satellite payload of ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B into geostationary transfer orbit.
Installed atop one of two mobile launch tables in service for Ariane 5, the heavy-lift vehicle was transferred today from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to its ELA-3 launch zone.
ViaSat-2 will be released first during tomorrow's nearly 42-minute mission, which is designated Flight VA237 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system. The spacecraft – with a liftoff mass estimated at 6,418 kg. – will be operated from an orbital position of 70 deg. West by ViaSat, a global broadband services and technology company based in Carlsbad, California.
Boeing and Airbus-built satellite payloads for Flight VA237
The Boeing-built ViaSat-2 relay platform is designed to bring considerable improvements in terms of speed, lower costs and extended broadband coverage within its footprint, which includes North and Central America, plus the Caribbean, northern South America, and the aeronautical and maritime routes in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.
Completing Flight VA237 will be EUTELSAT 172B's deployment by Ariane 5. This spacecraft will join the fleet of Paris-based Eutelsat – a leading satellite operator in Europe, the Middle East and Africa – and has a liftoff mass set at 3,551 kg.
EUTELSAT 172B is to be located at an orbital position of 172 deg. East for Asia-Pacific reach over land and sea from Alaska to Australia, delivering increased capacity for fast-growing applications that include in-flight and maritime connectivity, cellular backhaul, corporate networks, video distribution and government services. The spacecraft was built by Airbus as the initial all-electric telecommunications satellite produced in Europe – and the first of its type to be orbited by Ariane 5.

Arianespace marks its 2017 mid-year launch milestone with a record-setting Ariane 5 mission at the service of ViaSat and Eutelsat
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/223113.jpg)
The Ariane 5 for Flight VA237 is shown at the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone, ready for liftoff with its ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B satellite passengers.
On its sixth successful launch during the first half of 2017, Arianespace's Ariane 5 set a new heavy-lift record tonight in delivering the ViaSat-2 and EUTELSAT 172B telecommunications satellites to geostationary transfer orbit.
This mission underscored the increased payload lift capability provided for the Ariane 5 ECA version during the heavy-lift workhorse's operational career, setting another record for the total mass carried into geostationary transfer orbit. The delivery involved a total payload of 10,865 kg. – of which 9,969 kg. was the net liftoff mass for the two satellites, with the other mass including integration hardware for Ariane 5's dual-payload deployment system.
"With this new mission, Arianespace once again demonstrates the availability and versatility of its launch vehicle family for customers," explained Arianespace CEO Stéphane Israël. "For the third time this year and the 79th time in a row, Ariane 5 performed flawlessly. Well done! Congratulations to all!"
Providing more lift capability to the workhorse Ariane 5 ECA
Speaking from the Spaceport, Israël noted the Ariane 5 ECA's payload lift capability has been given an overall performance gain of more than 1.5 metric tons since the beginning of this launcher program, and will be further increased in steps through 2019, boosting it by another 250 kg. – enabling Arianespace to meet evolving customer requirements. This enhancement involves support of the European Space Agency, the French CNES space agency and Ariane 5 industrial prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers, he added.
Tonight's mission – designated Flight VA237 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system – keeps the company on track for the 12 flights targeted in 2017. It follows the five previous launches this year – two by Ariane 5, two by Soyuz and one by Vega – and clears the way for Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission, scheduled for June 28, along with three more Ariane 5 liftoffs and two Vega launches planned during the second half of 2017.
The first passenger released during Flight VA237 was ViaSat-2, which is to be operated from an orbital position of 70 deg. West by ViaSat – a global broadband services and technology company headquartered in Carlsbad, California, USA.
ViaSat-2: enhancing connectivity over a wide coverage area
With the goal of improving global connectivity, ViaSat-2 is to bring considerable improvements in terms of speed, lower costs and extended broadband across its coverage zone – which includes North and Central America, plus the Caribbean, northern South America, and aeronautical and maritime routes in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.
ViaSat-2 was the second satellite to be launched by Arianespace for VisSat. Based on Boeing's 702HP platform, it also was the 54th Boeing-built satellite orbited by the company.
An electric satellite "first" for Ariane 5
Completing tonight's Flight VA237 was the deployment of EUTELSAT 172B – the 32nd satellite launched by Arianespace for Paris-based Eutelsat, a leading satellite operator in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
EUTELSAT 172B will increase Eutelsat's capacity for fast-growing applications, such as in-flight and at-sea connectivity, mobile network interconnections, video and government services. Built by Airbus, it will be positioned at 172 deg. East – a strategic orbital position for coverage of Asia-Pacific, on land and at sea, from Alaska to Australia.
As the 118th Airbus-produced satellite orbited by Arianespace, this spacecraft uses the Eurostar E3000 EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) platform – becoming the first all-electric telecommunications satellite orbited by an Ariane 5.

Arianespace confirms its advantages: reliability, performance, availability, flexibility
79th success in a row for Ariane 5, and a new performance record for the Ariane 5 ECA version
The payload for Flight VA237 set a new record for the mass carried into geostationary transfer orbit, totaling 10,865 kg. (9,969 kg. net for the satellites). With this performance, Ariane 5 beats its previous record of 10,737 kg. (9,856 kg. for the satellites), set on August 24, 2016 during Flight VA232. This launch brings the total performance gain achieved since the beginning of Ariane 5 ECA operations to more than 1.5 metric tons. This performance will continue to gradually increase during the coming years.
A sustained launch rate, thanks to the availability of Arianespace's launcher family
With six launches, all successful, between January 27 and June 1 (three by Ariane 5, two by Soyuz and one by Vega), Arianespace maintains a sustained pace of operations. To date this year, Arianespace has already orbited eight geostationary satellites, totaling 34.57 metric tons, and one Earth observation satellite.
The three successful launches in less than a month – two by Ariane 5 (May 4 and June 1) and one by Soyuz (May 18 ) – clearly show the operational maturity of Arianespace's family of launchers. The next Ariane 5 launch, planned for June 28, will bring the total number of launches in the first half of 2017 to seven. Three more Ariane 5 missions and two with Vega are planned during the second half of the year.
Arianespace at the service of in-flight connectivity
The in-flight connectivity market, boosted by strong development momentum, is expected to grow by 300% in the next 10 years, with the number of Internet-enabled aircraft increasing from 5,300 in 2015 to more than 26,500 in 2025. Arianespace clearly supports these new space-based applications designed to improve people's lives, with six geostationary satellites dedicated to in-flight connectivity in its order book for future launches, plus the OneWeb low-Earth orbit constellation.
Shortly after the announcement of the orbital injection of the two satellites on today's Flight VA237, Arianespace Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Israël said: "With this third successful Ariane 5 launch of the year, and the 79th consecutive success in a row, Arianespace proudly delivers its service excellence to our American and European customers in support of global connectivity. The new all-time payload weight record set by this launch, which also was the first orbiting of an all-electric satellite by our heavy launcher, confirms the power and flexibility of Ariane 5.
"We are very honored by the confidence shown by ViaSat Inc., which has chosen Arianespace for the second time, as well as that of the European operator Eutelsat, for whom we have launched 32 satellites since 1983. Our congratulations to Boeing, which built ViaSat-2, and to Airbus, which built EUTELSAT 172B – the first satellite to use Europe's all-electric Eurostar E3000 EOR platform.
"I would also like to thank all of our partners in this 93rd Ariane 5 launch: our majority shareholder Airbus Safran Launchers and the entire European launcher industry, for the exceptional reliability and availability of Ariane 5; the European Space Agency, which provides essential support for the Ariane program; the French CNES space agency and the Guiana Space Center; and our ground segment companies and all staff at the space center, who continue to work alongside us as we go from success to success. And of course, I would like to congratulate everybody at Arianespace for this successful sixth launch of the year!"
ViaSat-2 was built by Boeing in El Segundo, California, using the 702HP platform. Positioned at 70° West, it will provide about 300 Gbps of throughput in Ka-band for North and Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and the aeronautical and maritime routes in the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe. It weighed 6,418 kg. at liftoff and offers a design life exceeding 14 years.
EUTELSAT 172B was built by Airbus in Toulouse, France, using the new all-electric Eurostar E3000 EOR platform. Positioned at 172° East, EUTELSAT 172B will provide fixed and mobile services, as well as in-flight connectivity for the Asia-Pacific region. It weighed 3,551 kg. at liftoff and offers a design life exceeding 15 years. |

June 2, 2017 - Press release
All-electric propulsion for orbit-raising and on-station manoeuvers for the first time on a high power satellite inaugurates significant mass savings on this class of mission
Innovative payload technology will dynamically distribute power between spot beams to provide internet connectivity to aircraft over the Pacific
Kourou, 02/06/2017 –EUTELSAT 172B, the first high power all-electric telecommunications satellite worldwide built by Airbus for Eutelsat, one of the world's leading satellite operators, has been successfully launched from Kourou, French Guiana by Ariane 5. The satellite will provide enhanced telecommunications, in-flight broadband and broadcast services for the Asia-Pacific region.
"We are the first company to demonstrate full electric propulsion for satellites of this size and capacity," said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems at Airbus. "With this spacecraft we are clearly setting a new benchmark - enabling powerful and complex satellites to be launched in the most cost efficient manner."
EUTELSAT 172B combines electric power of 13 kW with a launch mass of around 3,500 kg only, thanks to the latest EOR (Electric Orbit Raising) version of Airbus' highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform.
(https://airbusdefenceandspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/eutel-2-682x1024.jpg)
Full electric propulsion for initial orbit raising and all on-station manoeuvres, with Xenon gas ejected at high speed using only electric power supplied by solar cells, relieves operators of the need to include tons of chemical propellant, leading to up to 40% mass savings on the satellite.
Customers can therefore either achieve a significant saving on launch costs, or a substantial increase of the payload power for a given mass. Furthermore the Hall Effect Technology used by Airbus makes transfer to the operational orbit significantly faster than other electric propulsion technologies.
Innovation solutions include two deployable robotic arms to orientate the satellite's electric propulsion thrusters to control thrust direction and attitude during different phases of the mission. In addition, WALIS (Wide Angle Localisation Integrated System) is a proprietary network of ground stations developed by Airbus around the world, to enable Airbus engineers to control orbit raising operations until the satellite reaches geostationary orbit.
The development of Airbus' Eurostar all electric satellites has been supported by ESA and space agencies of European countries, in particular in France by CNES in the framework of the PIA programme (Plan d'Investissements d'Avenir) and in the UK by the UK Space Agency.
EUTELSAT 172B hosts three distinct payloads that will strengthen Eutelsat's capabilities across Asia-Pacific markets: a C-band payload, a regular Ku-band payload and a high throughput Ku-band payload designed for in-flight connectivity along Pacific air corridors.in that regard, the satellite features an innovative multi-port amplifier (MPA) on the payload to distribute dynamically the satellite's power between its 11 spot beams to provide internet connectivity for aircraft flying across the Asia-Pacific region.
The flexibility of the MPA means that more power can be allocated to each spot beam as demand increases giving aircraft passengers a better service. The MPA technology was developed by Airbus as part of the European Space Agency's Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems programme and supported by the UK Space Agency.
Additive layer manufacturing, or 3D printing, is further exploited for several elements on this satellite, including for a single printed bracket that is 35% lighter than and quicker to manufacture than the complex component it replaced.

702SP (Small Power).

Richard A. Baldridge, ViaSat's president and chief operating officer, said the company is determined to launch 1-Tbps ViaSat-3 satellites over Europe and Asia even if the Eutelsat partnership does not materialize and that no Asian partner is found. He said ViaSat-3 was on schedule and on budget, and that ViaSat-2, launched June 1, should reach its geostationary-orbit position in October. A high-resolution photograph of ViaSat-2 is in the upper right of this picture. (Just kidding) Credit: ViaSat
Key takeaways:
— ViaSat-2 has completed its chemical burn, now on electric. All OK, it will reach GEO slot in October. You've likely never seen a detailed photo of ViaSat-2 and won't now.
...
ViaSat 2 is only partly electric.
Yes, the initial orbit raising is via chemical propulsion and the balance is electric, with electric station-keeping. So far, orbit raising is working just as planned.
How long until ViaSat-2 gets to final GEO position?
We finished the chemical part of the orbit raising and the current assessment is October arrival on station. Our co-passenger [Eutelsat's all-electric 172B] wasn't determined initially, and turned out to have greater mass than most. A lighter co-passenger would have allowed more chemical propellant and a shorter overall orbit raising time. But we're still happy with the trade-off, given that we'll have the use of the payload capability for far longer than the difference in the orbit raising time.
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/140058.webp)
You think this is ViaSat-2? It's not. ViaSat, concerned about IP theft, has scrubbed public images of most of the interesting features. Credit: ViaSat
When can we see pictures of ViaSat-2? Why is it still under a burka?
Because we're really protective of our design and don't want to expose any more than we have to.
The logo you're showing in your ViaSat-2 PR campaign in fact is not the actual ViaSat-2.
No, and neither was the photo you saw on the cover of Aviation Week. We obscured the sensitive parts.
This may be the first secret commercial satellite. We can't even see it.
What you will see is the performance it provides once in service, which will be as good or better than we said. Remember when we advertised ViaSat-1 as a 100-Gbps satellite. We delivered 140. Given the results of the ground testing on ViaSat-2, we're optimistic we'll get the same kind of effects there. I think the end result of ViaSat-2 will be better than 300 Gbps.

Airbus-built full electric EUTELSAT 172B satellite reaches geostationary orbit in record time
(https://img.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/240633.jpg)
New telecommunications satellite has completed the first electric orbit raising for a high capacity satellite in just four months after its launch in June, a world first
Paris / Toulouse, 11/10/2017 – The EUTELSAT 172B spacecraft, built by Airbus for Eutelsat, one of the world's leading satellite operators, has now reached geostationary orbit, breaking the record for the fastest satellite electric orbit raising (EOR).
EUTELSAT 172B was launched by Ariane 5 from Kourou, in French Guiana, on 1 June 2017. The Airbus spacecraft control centre in Toulouse took control for early operations, initialisation, deployment of the solar array and electric propulsion arms, and completed initial testing prior to initiating the Electric Orbit Raising phase on 8 June. During this four-month phase, electric thrusters smoothly and efficiently propelled the satellite to the targeted orbit, consuming almost six times less propellant mass than for a satellite with chemical propulsion.
Following completion of the payload in-orbit tests and drift to its operational location led by the Eutelsat team, the satellite is scheduled to enter commercial service in November to provide enhanced telecommunications, in-flight broadband and broadcast services for the Asia-Pacific region. Its life span is expected to exceed 15 years thanks to electric propulsion for in-orbit raising and station-keeping.
"We are the first company to demonstrate full electric propulsion for satellites of this size and capacity, enabling their launch in the most cost-efficient manner. Furthermore with our system design, operation strategy and the plasma thruster technology we implement, we have completed the fastest electric orbit raising ever from transfer to geostationary orbit, which will allow Eutelsat to put their electric satellite into service in record time", said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems at Airbus.
Yohann Leroy, Eutelsat's Chief Technical Officer, added: "EUTELSAT 172B confirms the relevance of Eutelsat's early adoption of electric propulsion technology to optimise capex. In combining electric propulsion, High Throughput capacity, robotic arms and 3D printing techniques, our new satellite also reflects Europe's capability to push the envelope of innovation in order to increase the competitiveness of our business. We look forward to bringing EUTELSAT 172B into service next month for our clients in the Asia-Pacific region."
EUTELSAT 172B combines 13 kW of payload power with a launch mass of only 3,550 kg, thanks to the latest EOR version of Airbus' highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform.
The EOR success and reaching orbit in record time was made possible by two Airbus innovations:
- A pair of deployable robotic arms which orientate the satellite's electric propulsion thrusters, and control thrust direction and attitude during different phases of the mission.
- The WALIS (Wide Angle Localisation Integrated System) network of ground stations around the world, developed by Airbus, which has enabled engineers to control orbit raising operations until the satellite reached geostationary orbit.
The development of Airbus' Eurostar all-electric satellites has been supported by ESA and space agencies of European countries, in particular in France by the CNES in the framework of the PIA programme (Plan d'Investissements d'Avenir) and in the UK by the UK Space Agency.

New satellite goes live at 172° East, delivering enhanced capacity and new HTS payload for in-flight connectivity
Paris, 21 November 2017 – Eutelsat Communications' (Euronext Paris: ETL) all-electric EUTELSAT 172B satellite that went into full commercial service this morning is now offering greatly enhanced flexibility, power and connectivity for users in a vast region stretching from the West coast of the Americas to Asia, Oceania and across the Pacific.
The transfer of services to EUTELSAT 172B from EUTELSAT 172A was completed seamlessly in a series of overnight manoeuvres, releasing EUTELSAT 172A for an alternative orbital position to serve customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
Launched in June this year, EUTELSAT 172B sets a new benchmark as the fastest satellite to reach geostationary orbit using electric propulsion (in only four months) and the first optimised for in-flight connectivity across the Pacific. Its innovative High Throughput payload, consisting of 11 spotbeams, will transform efficiency by enabling power to be dynamically allocated as aircraft fly high traffic routes in the Asia Pacific region. This step change will allow Panasonic, the major client of the HTS payload, to better meet passenger demand and cost-effectively ensure consistently high levels of service to airlines.
In addition to the HTS payload, EUTELSAT 172B significantly increases regular bandwidth at the 172° East position, with C-band capacity as well as flexible Ku-band capacity spread across five interconnecting Widebeam service areas. Beyond maritime, video, enterprise, cellular backhaul and government services, the Ku-band capacity will serve as an overlay to economically deliver live television to passengers in flight.
Rodolphe Belmer, Eutelsat CEO, said: "As EUTELSAT 172B begins commercial activity that will stretch into the 2030s, this is a key moment to thank the men and women at Eutelsat and our colleagues at Airbus for collaborating passionately on a programme that sets a new industry standard. In addition to taking our 172° East location to a new level of performance for clients in the Asia-Pacific, EUTELSAT 172B further validates the value of electric propulsion for high-capacity satellites that are core to providing cost-competitive services in the telecoms marketplace."

ViaSat-2 Satellite Reaches Geostationary Orbit; Successfully Receives and Transmits First Data fr om Space
CARLSBAD, Calif., Dec. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Viasat Inc. (http://www.viasat.com/) (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global communications company, announced today the ViaSat-2 satellite has successfully arrived in geostationary orbit at 69.9° west longitude, and has transitioned into orbit normal mode (earth pointing) with its reflector and radiator deployments now complete. The Company also confirmed the ViaSat-2 satellite has commenced in-orbit testing, including the key milestone of the first end-to-end system test, with the ViaSat-2 satellite transmitting and receiving data to and from the new Viasat ground segment.
ViaSat-2 was launched by Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana, on June 1, 2017. The ViaSat-2 satellite employed a hybrid propulsion approach, using both traditional chemical as well as electric propulsion. The chemical propulsion subsystem was responsible for initial orbit raising and performed according to plan, setting the stage for the follow-on ascent to geostationary orbit using electric propulsion, which was completed last week. Viasat spacecraft partner, Boeing Satellite Systems International, controlled and monitored ViaSat-2 throughout the orbit raising process, flying the satellite from its Mission Control Center in El Segundo, California.
Following completion of the in-orbit tests, the ViaSat-2 satellite is scheduled to enter commercial service in February 2018, wh ere it will enable the delivery of advanced residential, enterprise, government and in-flight internet services.
Successful Data Transmission from Space
Within days of reaching its geostationary orbit, the Viasat team was successfully transmitting data to and from the ViaSat-2 satellite, as well as streaming content providing an early demonstration of the satellite's power and flexibility. Watch the first few moments of contact here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B9YSbzKJQ4).
"This is a great achievement for the Viasat team, our customers and our partners," said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO, Viasat. "The ViaSat-2 system is the culmination of years of hard work and commitment to bringing a satellite platform to market that can deliver truly high-speed, high-quality broadband to many more people, and with a much greater geographic reach. ЦитироватьViasat Affirms Commercial Service Launch for February 2018; Provides Updates on In-Orbit Testing
CARLSBAD, Calif., Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Viasat Inc. (https://www.viasat.com/)(NASDAQ: VSAT), a global communications company, announced today it has begun beta service on the ViaSat-2 satellite, and affirmed plans for full commercial service launch in February 2018. The ViaSat-2 satellite system is expected to significantly improve speeds, reduce costs and expand the footprint of broadband services across North America, Central America, the Caribbean, a portion of northern
South America, as well as the primary aeronautical and maritime routes across the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.
To-date, Viasat has successfully completed a number of key performance tests on the ViaSat-2 satellite and end-to-end network, including demonstrating downstream speeds of over 100 Mbps to production consumer terminals. The satellite ground network and other networking technologies are performing better than initially planned as measured in successful alpha testing. The satellite will continue to undergo testing during the beta service period, as Boeing has identified an in-orbit antenna issue, which has caused some spot beams to perform differently than they did during ground testing. Boeing, with Viasat's support, is working to determine the root cause of the issue and to identify corrective measures. Based on measured
data and analysis of the current in-orbit performance of the satellite as well as the network as a whole, Viasat believes the issue will not impact the coverage area of the satellite, or materially impact the planned services and the expected financial results from the ViaSat-2 system.
Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO, Viasat said, "Our advanced ground network, coupled with the flexibility features of the ViaSat-2 satellite, will help us manage the impact from the identified antenna issue if needed. We look forward to launching commercial service next month and bringing new higher-speed fixed and mobile services to market."
The Company will provide an update on the status of the ViaSat-2 service launch plans and ViaSat-1 based market testing of these plans at the next regularly scheduled earnings conference call, planned for early February 2018.

"We didn't base our business plans on perfection. We had margins in there for problems," Mark Dankberg, ViaSat's chairman and CEO, said of ViaSat-2 after discovering a performance-inhibiting antenna problem.
WASHINGTON — Fleet operator Viasat's newest satellite could lose around 15 percent of its intended throughput due to an antenna problem discovered after launch.
Mark Dankberg, Viasat's Chairman and CEO, told investors Feb. 8 that the 6,400-kilogram ViaSat-2 satellite launched in June on an Ariane 5 rocket will likely have a maximum capacity of 260 gigabits per second, rather than 300 Gbps or more as initially hoped.
Viasat and satellite manufacturer Boeing are continuing to work on solutions to the antenna problem, Dankberg said, but cannot conclude whether any prospective fixes will help or hinder the satellite's performance. Insurers are involved to determine the impact, which could entitle Viasat to a partial-loss claim, he said.
Dankberg said ViaSat-2 will still be a very capable satellite regardless of whether the handicap can be fixed. Other parts of the ViaSat-2 system, like its ground network, are performing better than expected, he said, mitigating the impact of the antenna malfunction.
"We didn't base our business plans on perfection," he said. "We had margins in there for problems."
ViaSat-2 is readying for service now and will be nationwide over the United States by the end of February, he said. Once fully active, the satellite will cover most of North America, along with the Caribbean and a swath of the North Atlantic Ocean out to the United Kingdom.
