The first 2016 delivery of an Ariane 5 to French Guiana for Arianespace's busy mission manifest this year has occurred, with elements of the heavy-lift vehicle arriving for an early March launch of Eutelsat's Eutelsat 65 West relay satellite.

After being unloaded from the MN Colibri sea-going ship at Pariacabo Port, Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage for Flight VA229 is readied for the transfer by road to the nearby Spaceport.
Completing a trans-Atlantic sea voyage from Europe, the Ariane 5's stages arrived aboard the MN Colibri – one of two roll-on/roll-off transport ships that support Arianespace's supply chain. The MN Colibri docked on Tuesday at Pariacabo Port adjacent to the city of Kourou, followed by the components' unloading and transfer by road to the nearby Spaceport yesterday.
Arianespace's mission with Eutelsat 65 West is one of up to eight Ariane 5 liftoffs planned for 2016 – which would mark a new annual record for this workhorse launcher. The March launch is designated Flight VA229 in Arianespace's numbering system, signifying the 229th mission with an Ariane vehicle since the family of European rockets entered operation in 1979.
Flight VA229 will follow Arianespace's year-opening Ariane 5 mission – Flight VA228 – scheduled for January 27 to loft Intelsat's Intelsat 29e. Ariane 5s are supplied by prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers, with Arianespace taking responsibility for the payload integration and launch operations at the Spaceport.
Overall, Arianespace is targeting up to 11 flights in 2016: as many as eight with Ariane 5, along with two liftoffs of the lightweight Vega, and one utilizing the medium-lift Soyuz.

Ariane 5's core cryogenic stage for Flight VA229 is moved into position over the mobile launch table during activity in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building.
The second Ariane 5 for launch by Arianespace in 2016 has begun taking shape at French Guiana, as build-up of the heavy-lift vehicle is now underway in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building.
Following a well-established assembly flow, the process began with this week's positioning of the launcher's central core cryogenic stage over one of two mobile launch tables utilized for Ariane 5. Next will be integration of the two large solid propellant boosters – which are installed directly on the launch table, followed by placement of the combined vehicle equipment bay and upper stage unit atop the core stage.
This activity is performed under the direction of industrial prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers, and will lead to Ariane 5's subsequent transfer to the Final Assembly Building, where Arianespace takes responsibility for payload integration, final checkout, and the launch operations.
Designated VA229 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, the upcoming mission is planned in early March with the EUTELSAT 65 West A relay satellite for Eutelsat. EUTELSAT 65 West A is to offer coverage for Latin America in C, Ku and Ka bands – providing video distribution and direct-to-home broadcasting, along with flexible high throughput for broadband access.
After deployment by Ariane 5 into geostationary transfer orbit, the Space Systems Loral-built (SSL) satellite will operate at position of 65 degrees West.
Arianespace is planning up to eight Ariane 5 missions in 2016 – which would be a new operational record for the heavy-lift launcher. Also on the company's manifest this year are one flight with its medium-lift Soyuz and two using the lightweight Vega launcher. The year-opening Ariane 5 flight is set for next week, with Intelsat's Intelsat 29e telecommunications satellite to be lofted from the Spaceport on January 27.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's second flight of 2016 has completed its basic build-up, marking a key milestone as preparations advance for this early March mission from the Spaceport in French Guiana – which will carry the EUTELSAT 65 West A relay satellite.
During activity this week inside the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building for Ariane 5, the "upper composite" – consisting of its cryogenic upper stage and equipment bay – was installed atop the workhorse vehicle's already-assembled components: the core cryogenic stage and two solid propellant boosters.

This process clears the way for additional integration and check-out, enabling Ariane 5's subsequent rollout to the Final Assembly Building for installation of its single passenger.
The upcoming mission with EUTELSAT 65 West A is designated Flight VA229 in Arianespace's numbering system. It will be the 229th launch of an Ariane vehicle since the European launcher series entered operation in 1979, as well as the 85th flight of an Ariane 5 overall.
Built by Space Systems Loral (SSL) for operator Eutelsat, EUTELSAT 65 West A will offer coverage for Latin America in C, Ku and Ka bands – providing video distribution and direct-to-home broadcasting, along with flexible high throughput for broadband access, from an orbital position of 65 deg. The telecommunications satellite for Arianespace's second Ariane 5 flight of 2016 has arrived in French Guiana with the delivery of EUTELSAT 65 West A to the Spaceport.

EUTELSAT 65 West A began initial pre-launch processing during the weekend, including a fit-check with the adapter that will serve as its interface with Ariane 5.

When operational at an orbital slot of 65 deg. West, the new relay platform will serve expanding markets in Brazil and across Latin America. Судя по весу SkyMuster, и к Intelsat 29e и к Eutelsat 65 West A можно добавить что-то типа Arsat2, весом 2,8 тонны. Значит проблема не в весе, а во времени-очереди.
Интересно, почему для одиночных не используют Ариан-5ES, было бы немного дешевле.

Но полагаю, что ежели из-за размеров, то тогда бы писали "непомерно большой спутник, влезет на Ариан без напарников". А тут сказали про Олимпийские игры...

Предполагаю, когда спутник был в изготовлении, он готовился к пуску даблшотом. Поэтому Ариан-ЕСА под него была. А когда, вероятно, не нашли быстро попутчика, и спутник стали готовить к пуску в одиночестве, Ариан-5ES к тому моменту не было: заранее не готовили, ATV все запустили, а единственная готовая 5ES - под 4х Галилео.

Liftoff of Ariane 5 with the 6,615-kg. EUTELSAT 65 West A telecommunications platform is set for March 9 on Arianespace Flight VA229 – the 229th mission with an Ariane family launch vehicle.
To be deployed into geostationary transfer orbit by Ariane 5, the SSL-built (Space Systems Loral) satellite will subsequently operate from an orbital slot of 65 deg. Ariane 5 will deploy the 6,615-kg. EUTELSAT 65 West A into geostationary transfer orbit during a mission lasting 27 minutes. This spacecraft was built by SSL and is to operate from a geostationary orbital slot of 65 deg. West, providing relay capacity for the Paris-based Eutelsat to expanding markets in Brazil and across Latin America.

The launcher rolled out today fr om the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone at this near-equatorial facility – wh ere Ariane 5 is scheduled for liftoff during a three-hour window that opens Wednesday at 2:20 a.m. local time in French Guiana.
Ariane 5's transfer followed the successful launch readiness review that validated the "go" status of the heavy-lift vehicle and its single payload, along with the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of tracking stations that will follow the flight.
The upcoming flight on March 9 is designated VA229 in Arianespace's numbering system, signifying the 229th mission of an Ariane-series vehicle to date. Its total payload lift performance is estimated at 6,707 kg., with EUTELSAT 65 West A – which was built by SSL for Paris-based operator Eutelsat Communications, and has a liftoff mass of 6,564 kg. – being deployed to geostationary transfer orbit during a rapid flight sequence of 27 minutes.
After its release by Ariane 5, EUTELSAT 65 West A will be maneuvered to an orbital slot of 65 deg. West, wh ere it is to serve expanding markets in Brazil and across Latin America. The spacecraft combines broad coverage in C- and Ku-bands for video distribution, cellular backhaul and direct-to-home broadcasting with a high throughput payload for broadband access in the Ka-band.
As the second Ariane 5 flight so far in 2016, this week's launch with EUTELSAT 65 West A will continue a busy year of mission activity for Arianespace's full family of launchers – with a combined total of 12 liftoffs planned using the heavy-lift Ariane 5, medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega.
