GPS-2F [Boeing]
 
GPS-2F (Global Positioning System) or Navstar-2F (Navigation System using Timing And Ranging) satellites are the fourth evolution stage of the second generation of the GPS (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sat/gps.htm) satellites. Improvements included an extended design life of 12 years, faster processors with more memory, and a new civil signal on a third frequency.
The GPS-2F satellites do not need to carry an apogee kick motor, in contrast to the earlier generations, as the launch vehicles provide direct insertion into the GPS (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sat/gps.htm) orbit. Originally the Delta-4M (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_det/delta-4m.htm) version was to be used for the Delta launches, but a mass growth of the satellites required a switch to the more powerful Delta-4M+(4,2) (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_det/delta-4m42.htm) version. For Atlas launches, the Atlas-5(401) (http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_lau_det/atlas-5-401.htm) version is used.
Boeing was contracted with options for up to 33 Block-IIF satellites in 1996, but in 2001 the contract was reduced 12 Block-IIF satellites. In July 2006, satellites 10, 11 and 12 were contracted. The first Block-IIF satellite was originally scheduled to launch in 2006, but was finally launched in 2010.

Viewing the Launch by Webcast: The live webcast will begin at 12:59 p.m. EDT.

Mission Description: GPS satellites serve and protect our warfighters by providing navigational assistance for U.S. military operations on land, at sea, and in the air. Civilian users around the world also use and depend on GPS for highly accurate time, location, and velocity information.

GPS IIF-8 is one of the next-generation GPS satellites, incorporating various improvements to provide greater accuracy, increased signals, and enhanced performance for users.

Launch Notes: GPS IIF-8 will be ULA's fourth GPS launch of 2014 and the 12th of the year. The mission will mark ULA's 89th mission since the company was founded in 2006.

США осуществили запуск ракеты Atlas V, которая должна вывести на орбиту навигационный спутник для ВВС США.
Ракета-носитель Atlas V 401 стартовала в 13.21 (20.21 мск) с мыса Канаверал (штат Флорида). Ракета выведет на орбиту третий спутник последнего поколения GPS IIF-8, который будет использоваться американскими ВВС, а также в мирных навигационных целях. Это пятидесятый запуск ракеты-носителя Atlas V.
