Measat Global Bhd will be launching its sixth satellite, the RM1.2 billion Measat-3B, in French Guiana, South America, in mid-May this year.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Measat-3B which covers Malaysia, Indonesia, South Asia and Australia will help to increase connectivity level up by between 10% to 20%, bridging the digital gaps in Malaysia.

"Currently, I would say the connectivity level in Malaysia is around 65%, whereby rural areas still have limited access for communication.

With Measat-3B we can have better and speedy connectivity," he told the media after visiting Measat Teleport and Broadcast Centre in Cyberjaya yesterday.

The minister also said that Measat-3B has 20 to 30 times more capacity than its previous satellites.

"Measat-3B is a powerful satellite that will more than double the current Ku-Band capacity operated by Measat and allow the Malaysian operator to meet the increasing requirements of direct-to-home and telecommunicat ions services in the region," he said.

Malaysia's venture into commercial satellite technology started in May 1994, when Binariang Sdn Bhd and Boeing Satellite System signed an agreement for the construction of Malaysia East Asia Satellite (Measat) System.

Measat-1, based on Boeing 376 satellite platform was launched on January 1996 at French Guiana via Arianne 4 rocket. Measat-2 was launched at the same location via similar rocket into space some nine month later.

The Measat-3, based on Boeing 601HP satellite platform was launched into space at Baikonur via Proton M rocket on Dec 12, 2006.

The Measat-3A on the other hand was based on Orbital Science's STAR-2 platform and was launched into space at Baikonur via Zenit-3SLB rocket on June 21, 2009.

Measat-3B is built by EADS Astrium based on Eurostar 3000 platform. All Measat series satellites are still in service. The Measat-1 and Measat-2 are now known as Africasat-1 and Africasat-2.

According to Measat Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd director Tun Dr Mohamed Hanif Omar, Measat-3B is the largest satellite ever ordered and that it is looking to launch Measat-3C in mid-2015 which will eventually bring the number of satellites operating by Measat to seven.

"Measat-3B is completed and being kept in France before it will be launch in May. For Measat-3C we collaborate with an Australian company. Works are on schedule and thus we are confident to launch it next year to provide better and upgraded connectivity to Malaysians as well as Africa, India and across the region," he said.

Measat-3B is designed to have a launch mass of 5.8 tonnes, and electrical power of 16kW and is planned for an operational lifetime of over 15 years.

As prime contractor for Measat-3B, EADS Astrium is responsible for the design and manufacture of the satellite, and the supply of both payload and platform.

March 10, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA218

Activity is continuing in French Guiana to support Arianespace's busy 2014 launch schedule, with initial launcher buildup procedures underway for Flight VA218's Ariane 5 vehicle.

As part of familiar pre-launch preparations inside the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, the launcher's core cryogenic stage has been removed from its protective shipping container and hoisted into position over one of two operational mobile launch tables available for Ariane 5.

Subsequently during separate rollouts, the vehicle's two solid propellant boosters were moved via rail on pallets from their dedicated on-site assembly facility to the Launcher Integration Building, in preparation for mating with the core stage.

This Ariane 5 launcher will be used on Arianespace's 218th Ariane-series mission – designated Flight VA218 – which is to carry two passengers: the Optus 10 spacecraft for Australian operator Optus, and Asia-Pacific provider MEASAT Global's MEASAT-3b satellite.

Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission from the Spaceport enters its payload integration phase

  September 3, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA218
Payload integration is underway for Arianespace's upcoming heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission, which is scheduled for next week from French Guiana with two commercial telecommunications satellites: MEASAT-3b and Optus 10.
Recent activity at the Spaceport included initial steps in creating the dual-payload "stack," with MEASAT-3b riding in the upper position.  This involved installing the relay platform – manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space – atop Ariane 5's SYLDA dispenser system in the launcher's Final Assembly Building.
MEASAT-3b was then encapsulated by Ariane 5's ogive-shaped payload fairing, completing the payload stack's upper portion and readying it for positioning over Optus 10 after this spacecraft is installed atop the launcher.
During the Ariane 5 mission, which is set for the evening of September 11, MEASAT-3b will be released first into geostationary transfer orbit, followed by separation of the SYLDA dispenser – enabling Optus 10's subsequent deployment.

MEASAT-3b is equipped with 48 high-power Ku-band transponders to expand direct-to-home broadcasting and VSAT (very small aperture terminal) services across Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia. Operated by MEASAT – a Malaysian-based premium supplier of satellite relay services to international broadcasters, direct-to-home platforms and telecom operators – MEASAT-3b will be co-located at the 91.5 deg. East orbital position along with the MEASAT-3 and MEASAT-3a satellites.
Optus 10, which was built by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) for Australian telecommunications service provider Optus, has been fueled at the Spaceport in the S5 payload preparation facility.  This satellite is outfitted with 24 Ku-band transponders to provide direct TV broadcast, internet connectivity, telephone and data transmission services for Australia and New Zealand.
The Ariane 5 mission with MEASAT-3b and Optus 10 is designated Flight VA218 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system. It will be the fourth launch of the heavy-lift workhorse from French Guiana in 2014.

 September 4, 2014 – Ariane Flight VA218
The heavy-lift Ariane 5 for Arianespace's next mission from French Guiana is now complete following integration of its full payload "stack," consisting of the MEASAT-3b and Optus 10 commercial telecommunications satellites.
Encapsulated by an ogive-shaped protective fairing, MEASAT-3b was lowered into place yesterday over its Optus 10 co-passenger – which had been installed atop Ariane 5's cryogenic core stage during earlier activity.
This latest preparation milestone clears the way for final steps that will include functional tests, launch rehearsal and launch vehicle arming – to be followed by the readiness review and rollout to the Spaceport's launch zone for a liftoff on September 11.
As the upper payload in Ariane 5's stack, MEASAT-3b will be released first in the flight sequence. This relay platform – which was manufactured by Airbus Defense and Space for operation by MEASAT – is equipped with 48 high-power Ku-band transponders to expand direct-to-home broadcasting and VSAT (very small aperture terminal) services across Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia.
Optus 10 is to be deployed from the launcher's lower passenger position, with its separation to follow that of MEASAT-3b. Built by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) for Australian telecommunications service provider Optus, the spacecraft is outfitted with 24 Ku-band transponders to provide direct TV broadcast, internet connectivity, telephone and data transmission services for Australia and New Zealand.
Designated Flight VA218 in Arianespace's numbering system, this upcoming mission will be the fourth Ariane 5 launch from the Spaceport in French Guiana during 2014.

Ariane 5 delivers MEASAT-3b and Optus 10 into orbit on its 61st consecutive successful mission

Arianespace's Ariane 5 launcher logged another heavy-lift mission achievement, orbiting commercial telecommunications payloads today for leading Asia-Pacific operators MEASAT and Optus on Flight VA218.

Lifting off fr om the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone in French Guiana, Ariane 5 successfully deployed MEASAT-3b and Optus 10 into geostationary transfer orbit – marking its 61st consecutive successful mission. Arianespace Chairman and CEO Stéphane Israël noted that a total of 100 communications satellites have been delivered to geostationary transfer orbits by Ariane 5 during this unbroken string of successes.

"I am particularly happy that this event came on the occasion of a launch for the Asia-Pacific region: a part of the world wh ere Arianespace has been very successful, as demonstrated by a market share constantly above 60 percent," he said in comments from the Spaceport's mission control center. "With tonight's launch, 70 payloads have been orbited by Arianespace for customers from Asia-Pacific region and this trend will continue as our order book currently includes 10 more satellites to be launched for customers in the region."

MEASAT-3b is the third spacecraft Arianespace has lofted for this Malaysia-based operator, and will expand MEASAT's telecommunications and direct-to-home broadcast services in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia. Built by Airbus Defence and Space, MEASAT-3b has a design life of 15 years and will operate from an orbital position of 91.5 deg. East.

Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Y.B. Dato' Jailani Johari, called Flight VA218's orbiting of MEASAT-3b a significant and historic event that represents "another milestone in the development of Malaysia's satellite system, which will benefit both Malaysia and the wider Asia-Pacific region."

Flight VA218's Optus 10 passenger was the sixth Arianespace has lofted for Australian operator Optus, which will utilize this satellite to provide direct TV broadcast, Internet, telephone and data transmission services for Australia, New Zealand and the Antarctic region. Optus 10 was produced by SSL (Space Systems/Loral) with a design life of 15 years and will be positioned at 164 deg. East in orbit.

Paul Sheridan, the Vice President of Optus Satellite, offered a special recognition of Arianespace for its continued support during the two companies' long-term relationship.  "This is our sixth launch with the Ariane team, and it is worth noting that it's been almost 30 years since the partnership commenced," he added.

Ariane 5's total payload performance for Flight VA218 was approximately 10,090 kg. – including its MEASAT-3b and Optus 10 payload and associated integration/deployment hardware.

In congratulating all who contributed to "making the difference" with tonight's success, Arianespace's Stéphane Israël added: "This difference enables Arianespace to remain the commercial space transportation leader.  Thanks to you, Ariane 5 keeps the pace; Arianespace is on the move."

Israël said the company's next launch is another Ariane 5 dual-passenger mission to geostationary transfer orbit in October.  It will carry ISDLA-1 for DIRECTV and Intelsat, which are two long-time customers of Arianespace; along with ARSAT's ARSAT-1 – the first geostationary communications satellite built in Argentina.
