13.04.2012 09:55

IANS
Chennai, April 29, 2012

India will ferry two foreign satellites - French and Japanese - on board its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C21) rocket in August this year for a price, said a senior official. "The next rocket launch will be in August. We will be sending our PSLV rocket with French satellite
SPOT 6 (800 kg) and a small Japanese satellite weighing around 15 kg. Though the rocket is called PSLV-C21 it will go before PSLV-C20," P.S. Veeraraghavan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), told IANS.

The Thiruvananthapuram based VSCC is part of India's space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

ISRO's commercial arm Antrix Corporation Limited (Antrix) has entered into a commercial Launch Services Agreement with Astrium SAS, a company under EADS, France for launching SPOT-6, an advanced remote sensing satellite.

What is interesting is that the 800 kg SPOT-6 built by Astrium SAS will be the heaviest third party payload that ISRO will be carrying after the 350 kg Italian satellite Agile it carried in 2007, officials said.

As the total luggage will be around 815 kg, ISRO will be using its Core Alone variant of PSLV (rocket without its six strap on motors).

The mission will take ISRO's total tally of ferrying foreign satellites to 29.

ISRO has been carrying foreign satellites since 1999 initially as an add-on luggage to its own satellite.

It was with Agile satellite that ISRO started flying a full commercial rocket.

According to Veeraraghavan, the space agency would launch SARAL satellite - an Indo-French initiative - using PSLV-C20 rocket after the August launch.

PROITERES [OIT]

A team of students and faculty members of Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT) are now developing a small satellite called MicroSat with an electric propulsion rocket engine, which is installed with radio equipment. The project called PROITERES (PRoject of OIT Electric-Rocket-Engine Onboard Small Space Ship) aims to demonstrate powered-flight technology for an ultra-small satellite and to monitor the Kansai District with a high-resolution camera. PROITERES also aims to reduce development costs and shorten the development period drastically by miniaturizing the satellite and its component parts.

The project will focus on:

Experimental verification of two-way radio signal propagation characteristics using amateur radio-frequency bands.
Communication tests and their feedback aiming at improvement of satellite communication technology by using off-the-shelf consumer goods.
Tracking and communicating with our satellite by amateur earth stations all over the world.

The SPOT 6 Earth observation satellite is now ready for launch and will shortly leave Astrium's facility in Toulouse
SPOT 6 and its twin SPOT 7 will operate until 2024, ensuring continuity from SPOT 5 with a higher level of quality and major improvement in service performance
The SPOT 6 satellite, its instrument and the entire operational ground system have been developed and qualified by Astrium Satellites and their partners in 3.5 years, a benchmark at this level of quality

SPOT 6, the brand new Earth observation satellite built by Astrium, Europe's leading space technology company, is now ready for launch. It will be transferred in the coming days from the Astrium Satellites facility in Toulouse (France) to the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India where it will be integrated with the PSLV launcher that will carry it into orbit.

SPOT 6 is a high resolution optical Earth observation satellite. Like its twin SPOT 7, which is slated for launch early 2014, SPOT 6 will have a 60-km swath width and produce imagery products with a resolution down to 1.5 metres. M2 is planned is November.

Here might be the sequence :
1. C21 - Sept 2nd week
2. GSAT-10 - Sept (from Arian)
3. C20 - Oct
4. GSAT 14 (M2) - Nov

Toulouse, France (SPX) Jul 30, 2012

SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 will ensure service continuity from the SPOT 4 and SPOT 5 satellites, which have been operating since 1998 and 2002 respectively.

Both ground and space segments have been designed for improved performance compared with previous SPOT missions, especially in terms of responsiveness - from satellite tasking to product delivery - and collection capacity.

Moreover, SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 are "agile" as they can quickly be aimed at any point within 1500km of their position. The constellation SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 will actually provide a daily revisit everywhere on Earth with a total coverage of 6 million km" per day.

As soon as they are validated in orbit, SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 will be operated by Astrium Services in coordination with the two Pleiades satellites which will be in the same orbit.

The constellation will offer unique applications, in an unrivalled delivery time, to Astrium Services' customers. Every point on the globe will be able to be seen every day, once in high resolution and also in very high resolution.

In addition while SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 will provide a wide view over a large area, Pleiades 1A and Pleiades 1B will be able to offer, for the same zone, products with a narrower field of view but with an increased level of detail (50cm).

Based on the newly designed Astrium Astrosat 500 MklI platform, SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 offer enhanced performance compared with their predecessors and are also lighter (weighing 720kg against SPOT 5's 3 tonnes), thanks to the use of latest-generation technologies including silicon carbide, a brand-new detector for the instrument, and new avionics for the satellite. Both satellites will have a service life of 10 years.

In addition to the satellites, Astrium has complete responsibility for the design and manufacture of the ground segment, the launch of the satellites, qualification and maintenance of the system, and the satellite command and control operations.

The overall lead time for the whole system, 3.5 years, demonstrates that Astrium's improvement programs have delivered results, reaching benchmark efficiency, putting technology at the service of quality, speeding up manufacture and reducing the level of project risk.

All these improvements have contributed to the success of SPOT 6, from instruments to platforms and satellite assembly, integration and test (AIT), and from ground segment to data processing techniques.

ЦитироватьHAL delivers propellant tank for PSLV rocket
By:   Greg Waldron Singapore
04:53 23 Jul 2012

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has delivered an indigenously-produced fourth stage propellant tank for the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket.

Producing the tank locally resulted in foreign exchange savings of Indian rupees (Rs) 12 million ($217,000), HAL chairman RK Tyagi said in a statement.

"The PS4 tank is a part of the fourth stage of PSLV," added HAL. "It will carry 1.6t of liquid propellant mono-methyl hydrazine (MMH) as fuel and mixed oxides of nitrogen (MON-3) as oxidiser during the flight."

All machining was carried out at HAL, while the welding was carried out at ISRO's liquid propulsion centre and at HAL.

The PSLV has been India's launch vehicle of choice. It is a relatively small but capable launcher that has been used extensively by the Indian government and, in a few cases, to loft payloads for paying foreign customers. Much of the craft, although evolving, has been based on foreign technology.

In April, ISRO announced the signing of a commercial Launch Services Agreement between its commercial arm, Antrix, and the European satellite manufacturer Astrium, for the launch of the European remote sensing spacecraft, Spot 6.

The 800kg Spot 6 spacecraft is being built by Astrium and will be launched by the strap-on-less core alone (CA) variant of ISRO's PSLV during the second half of 2012.Some other undisclosed satellites will also be carried on this flight as co-payloads.

the "Mini Redent Strapon Inertial  Navigation System satellite" should read "mini Redundant Strapdown Inertial Navigation System" (aka mRESINS).

It is a test of an improved, miniaturized version of the Redundant Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (RESINS) already used on PSLV and GSLV rockets. It features an additional avionics box fixed to the fourth stage and not a free-flying satellite. For guidance, this PSLV mission relies on the standard RESINS. If successful, mRESINS will take over for future flights.

The SPOT constellation.

Astrium Services and the Mexican federal government's Ministry of agriculture, livestock farming, rural development, food and fisheries (SAGARPA), signed an agreement this spring to upgrade the ERMEX receiving station south of Mexico City. This station will enter service in September. Equipped with a high-tech antenna and new-generation SPOT terminal, it will initially receive SPOT 5 imagery and then SPOT 6 imagery when commercial operations get underway.

It will also receive data from SPOT 7 in 2014.The Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) operates the ERMEX receiving station, handling more than 70,000 images every year for the Ministry of Agriculture and sharing data through a multi-licence agreement with public research bodies, government agencies and international organizations.SIAP has already covered Mexico's territory eight times over with satellite imagery received by the ERMEX station.

It thus has a mosaic of geo-information to support comparative analysis of phenomena impacting production of food, textiles and energy.

This highly specialised task is conducted by a network of experts at 33 strategic locations around the country, working under SAGARPA's brand new geospatial command centre that opened in May.Data from the new satellites will boost ERMEX's Earth-observing capabilities, increasing the timeliness and spatial resolution of its products, as well as providing new features enabled by the satellites' latest-generation sensors.Mexico has the technologies and expertise to receive, process and analyse satellite imagery for agricultural statistics, climate risk management and other strategic aspects of agriculture and fisheries.

The station has been receiving satellite imagery from SPOT 2, SPOT 4 and SPOT 5 since 2003. To ensure SPOT data continuity, SIAP has signed an agreement with Astrium and invested in upgrading its cutting-edge facilities.

Through its GEO-Information services, Astrium is recognized as one of the leaders in the geo-spatial information market, not least thanks to the now fully integrated skills and resources of the former Spot Image and Infoterra. The company provides decision-makers with complete solutions enabling them to increase security, boost agricultural performance, maximize oil and gas or mining operations, improve their management of natural resources, and protect the environment.

It has exclusive access to data from the SPOT, TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites and Pleiades, coupled with a complete range of space-based data sources and airborne acquisition capability allowing it to offer an unrivalled scope of Earth observation products and services.

This extensive portfolio covers the entire geo-information supply chain, from the generation of images to the provision of high added-value information to end-users.By leveraging the synergies and expertise available across the whole of Astrium Services, its GEO-Information teams develop innovative, yet competitive, bespoke solutions based on the combination and integration of Earth observation, navigation and high-end telecommunications.

ISRO's 100th mission: PSLV rocket lifts off successfully
ЦитироватьThe country's space programme witnessed a historic milestone on Sunday with the launch of two foreign satellites by ISRO's workhorse PSLV rocket in the agency's 100th mission from the spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 110km from Chennai.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh witnessed the launch of PSLV C-21, that carried French advanced remote sensing satellite, the 720 kg SPOT-6 and its 15kg Japanese micro satellite PROITERES. The mission is without any Indian satellite.

From the time of its humble beginnings when it launched the indigenous 'Aryabhatta' in Russia on April 19, 1975, it has been a long and successful odyssey for ISRO.

SPOT-6 is the biggest commercial lift so far since India forayed into the money-spinning commercial satellite launch services after 350kg Agile of Italy was put in orbit in 2007 by PSLV. Twelve other foreign commercial satellites were less than 300 kg.

France's five earlier SPOT satellites were launched by European Araine rocket.

SPOT-6, built by ASTRIUM SAS,a subsidiary of EADS, France, is an earth observation satellite, while PROITERES, developed by students and faculty of Osaka Institute of Technology, will study Kansai region of Japanese island of Honshu.

First images from SPOT 6

13 september 2012

Just three days after its launch

ЦитироватьAstrium Services has posted the first images from the SPOT 6 satellite, just three days after its launch on 9 September.

This 1.5-metre-resolution image of Bora-Bora was taken over a 60-km swath.

SPOT 6 will assure continuity of data from the series of satellites operating since 1986, along with many technological innovations. Its unique responsiveness and acquisition capacity are set to benefit a broad spectrum of operational applications.

These first images present very varied landscapes, highlighting SPOT 6's potential for applications like urban and natural resource mapping or agricultural and environmental monitoring. The wide imaging swath (60km), identical to that of the other SPOT satellites, makes SPOT 6 an ideal tool for covering vast territories, while its 1.5m resolution - against 2.5m on SPOT 5 - enables it to distinguish smaller features than ever before.

To post the images, all operational systems swung smoothly into action, from satellite tasking to image acquisition, reception and processing.

In January 2014, the arrival of SPOT 7 will bring more new services including daily revisits. Together, the SPOT 6 and SPOT 7 constellation will assure continued availability of high-resolution, wide-area products through to 2024.

The first SPOT 6 images can be viewed in the image gallery on Astrium GEO-Information Services' website
