By Hemanth CS | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

The Radar Imaging Satellite-1 (RISAT-1), second in the series of India's radar imaging reconnaissance satellites, will be Indian Space Research Organisation's (Isro's) first launch next year.

RISAT-1, which will have the capability of imaging during day and night and in all-weather conditions including fog and haze, will be launched in January 2012 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, sources in the space agency told DNA.

The satellite, which will be launched aboard Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C-19 (PSLVC-19), will carry a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and can be used for observational purposes for national security and environmental applications.
According to Isro, SAR is an active radar sensor, operating in the microwave region of electromagnetic spectrum that provides target parameters such as dielectric constant, surface roughness, geometry.

The SAR payload is based on an active phased array technology using Transmit/Receive (TR) modules, which would provide necessary electronic agility for achieving the multi-mode capability, providing spatial resolutions of 1 m to 50 m, and a swath of 10 to 240 km caters to different applications.

Isro scientists said RISAT-1 will follow RISAT-2 in the sequence of the country's radar imaging reconnaissance satellites.Although ISRO has denied that the RISAT-2 (launched in April 2009) falls under the spy satellite category, it is rumoured that the satellite is being used for surveillance on areas on the western borders of India.

The pre-launch activities of RISAT-2 in 2009 had aroused a lot of curiosity with media reports stating that it was accelerated following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, with the help of the Israeli Aerospace Industries.

Apart from the RISAT satellites, Indian defence forces under the Integrated Space Command have been contemplating having dedicated satellites for quite some time now.

IAF chief NAK Browne, during his recent visit to Bangalore, had given top priority to having such dedicated satellites for all the three services under the Indian defence.

Indigenously developed remote sensing satellite RISAT-1, which can take images of the Earth in all weather conditions, would be launched by space agency ISRO anytime from March 15.

The 1850 kg RISAT-1, earlier slated for launch last year onboard PSLV-C19, would be a major milestone for the country and a boon for regions perennially under cloud cover.

"The launch of microwave remote sensing RISAT-1 is slated anytime from March 15," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters on the sidelines of an event here organised by the Indian Institute of Science.

Besides use in the agriculture sector, the satellite's all weather capability to take images of the Earth could also be used to keep an eye on the country's borders round-the-clock and to help in anti-terrorist and anti-infiltration operations, he said.

COIMBATORE: Within a few weeks, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is slated to launch a microwave remote sensing satellite, RISAT-1 (Radar Imaging Satellite). After the space vehicle enters its designated orbit, you can expect ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan to grin from ear to ear. Sharing the honours will be a little-known scientist, Valarmathi, who hails from Tamil Nadu. In fact, she is the project director of RISAT-1, the first woman from this State to head such a project.
Earlier, senior scientist R N Tyagi was the project director of RISAT.
A 1981-batch engineer from Government College of Technology in Coimbatore, Valarmathi took charge following the retirement of Tyagi. "I am a 1981-batch engineer from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Government College of Technology in Coimbatore," she told Express over phone from ISRO Satellite Centre in Bangalore. However, she declined to entertain further questions. Recently, Radhakrishnan had said that RISAT-1 could be launched anytime after March 15.
In fact, Valarmathi is the second woman scientist in India's space history to head such a mission.
T K Anuradha was the first woman scientist to head a space mission when GSAT-12 was launched on July 15, 2011.
Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) is a microwave remote sensing satellite that has a Synthetic Aperture Radar and weighs about 1,850 kg. It is slated for launch by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle- C19 (XL) this year into a 536 km orbit, the Indian Space Research Organisation website said.

India's spy satellite Risat-1 to be launched in April

CHENNAI: A wholly Indian-built spy/surveillance satellite - Radar Imaging Satellite (Risat-1) - that can see through clouds and fog and has very high- resolution imaging is slated for launch in April, a senior official of the Indian space agency has said.

An official of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said thorough tests were being done on the Risat-1. "The Risat-1 is put to thermal vacuum test (a test to check the satellite's functioning in space environment). It is a complex microwave satellite being built for the first time in India.

The satellite is expected to be launched in April," the senior official told IANS, not wishing to be named because of the organisational rules.

In earlier satellites, one major component, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was imported, but in Risat-1 that has also been developed in India.

He said Risat-1 is the first such satellite being built by India and is a bit complex compared to other remote sensing/earth observation satellites built and sent up earlier.

According to ISRO officials, Risat-1 at 1,850 kg is the heaviest microwave satellite to be built by India.

The satellite would be used for disaster prediction and agriculture forestry, and the high resolution pictures and microwave imaging could also be used for defence purposes.

Risat-1 will have all weather, day and night imaging capability.

The satellite's synthetic aperture radar can acquire data at C-band.

ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan had said last October that the space agency would launch two more satellites - Risat-1 and SARAL - before 2011-end. But that did not happen. He also said two more satellites - AstroSat and Aditya - will be launched in 2012-13.

Remote sensing satellites send back pictures and other data for use. India has the largest constellation of remote sensing satellites in the world providing imagery in a variety of spatial resolutions, from more than a metre ranging up to 500 metres, and is a major player in vending such data in the global market.

In 2009, ISRO had launched 300 kg Risat-2 with an Israeli built SAR enabling earth observation on all weather, day and night conditions. The satellite can look through clouds and fog.

With 11 remote sensing/earth observation satellites orbiting in the space, India is a world leader in the remote sensing data market. The 11 satellites are TES, Resourcesat 1, Cartosat 1, 2, 2A and 2B, IMS 1, Risat-2, Oceansat 2, Resourcesat-2, Megha-Tropiques.

According to ISRO officials, the rocket that would sling Risat-1 will be the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle's (PSLV) upgraded variant called PSLV-XL.

The rocket would weigh around 320 tonnes at lift-off and will be the third such expendable rocket to be sent up by ISRO, and first time to launch a remote sensing satellite.

ISRO had used the PSLV-XL variant (rocket with extended strap-on motors than what the base model has) for its moon mission (Chandrayaan-1) in 2008 and for launching its communication satellite GSAT-12 in 2011.

The PSLV is a four-stage (engine) rocket powered by solid and liquid propellants alternatively. The first and third stages are fired by solid propellant and the second and fourth stages are fired by liquid propellant.

ISRO has developed three PSLV variants. The first is the standard variant weighing around 290 tonnes with six strap-on motors measuring 11.3 metres with a fuel capacity of nine tonnes.

The other two rocket variants are the PSLV Core Alone without the six strap-on motors and PSLV-XL with longer strap-on motors measuring 13.5 metres having a fuel capacity of 12 tonnes of solid fuel.

India To Launch Home-built RISAT-1 Next Month

BANGALORE, March 14 (Bernama) -- India is expected to launch next month an indigenously designed and developed satellite that has the unique capability of imaging during day and night and in all weather conditions.
"The Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) is likely to be launched in the second half of April from Sriharikota space port," an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) official told Press Trust of India (PTI) here on Tuesday.
The spacecraft, country's first microwave remote sensing satellite, was originally scheduled to be launched this month but the ISRO row, the fallout of the punitive action against four former space scientists for their role in the Antrix-Devas deal, delayed the preparations.
Nearly two years ago, India launched a Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-2) with all weather capability and ability to penetrate through clouds but it was realised in association with Israel Aerospace Industries.
Bangalore-headquartered ISRO said RISAT-2 has enhanced the country's capability in the management of disasters.
RISAT-1, weighing around 1850 kg, is slated for launch by ISRO's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C19 (XL)) into a 536 km orbit.
Besides use in the agriculture sector, RISAT-1 could also be used to keep round-the-clock vigil on the country's borders and help in anti-terrorist and anti-infiltration operations.
The satellite carries a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload, operating in a multi-polarisation and multi-resolution mode to provide images with coarse, fine and high spatial resolutions respectively.

Place: Bangalore | Agency: PTI

Preparations are underway for this month's launch of an indigenously designed and developed satellite that has the unique capability of imaging during day and night and in all weather conditions.

ISRO is looking at 'lucky April 20' for the blast-off from India's spaceport of Sriharikota.

RISAT-1, a Radar Imaging Satellite with the capability to take images of the earth during day and night as well as in cloudy conditions, is a first of its kind by India and has already reached the spaceport having been transported from here.

India had launched RISAT-2, which it bought from Israel for $110 million, on April 20, 2009, and Resourcesat-2 mission took place on the same day last year. Both were successful ventures.

"April 20 is a lucky day for us", an ISRO official told PTI here. After back-to-back failures of GSLV -- one with Russian engine and another with homegrown one --, this statement did not come as a surprise.

RISAT-1, weighing around 1850 kg, is slated for launch by ISRO's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C19 (XL)) into a 536km orbit.

The launch of the spacecraft, the country's first microwave remote sensing satellite, was put off by at least a couple of months following the ISRO row, the fallout of the punitive action against four former space scientists for their role in the Antrix-Devas deal, that delayed the preparations.

RISAT-2 with all weather capability and ability to penetrate through clouds was realised in association with Israel Aerospace Industries. RISAT-2, primarily a spy satellite, is being used solely for Defence applications, keeping an eye on the borders and the country's neighbourhood.

"This satellite (RISAT-2) can sharply focus on metallic objects", an ISRO official said.

"The RISAT-1 will be useful for monitoring of agriculture and water resources management, among other applications", said the official, who added that this satellite would not be used for defence applications as RISAT-2 is already doing that job.

RISAT-1 carries a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload, operating in a multi-polarisation and multi-resolution mode to provide images with coarse, fine and high spatial resolutions respectively.

India ready with all-weather imaging satellite: ISRO
India is set to launch an indigenous satellite with the "unique" capability to capture images in all-weather conditions that will facilitate agriculture and disaster management, ISRO said on Wednesday.

India currently depends on images from a Canadian satellite as domestic remote sensing spacecraft cannot take pictures of the ground during cloud cover.

After nearly 10 years of effort, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has developed -- with a lot of participation from Indian industries -- a microwave satellite that has the unique capability of imaging during day and night and in all weather conditions, it said.

"This (Radar Imaging Satellite or RISAT-1) is about 1,850 kg. So, this will be heaviest satellite lifted by a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told PTI here.

"It's most likely to be launched on April 26 at 5.45 am," he said. "It has taken about 10 years of efforts in developing this (RISAT-1)".

The approved cost of RISAT-1, including its development, is Rs378 crore, while Rs 120 crore has been spent to build the rocket (PSLV-C19), making it a Rs498-crore mission.

RISAT-1 is a "complex satellite", Radhakrishnan said.

The satellite would be particularly useful in Kharif season when cloud-covered atmosphere is frequent. Images taken from the spacecraft of agricultural crops would enable planners with regard to production estimation and forecast, the space agency said.

During floods, aerial pictures would give a clear idea on the affected region and water level. In addition, this satellite can even "penetrate" the ground and throw light on soil moisture up to a few centimeters, Radhakrishnan said.

RISAT-1 would be launched into a 536-km orbit by PSLV, which is India's workhorse rocket.

The satellite carries a C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload, operating in a multi-polarisation and multi-resolution mode to provide images with coarse, fine and high spatial resolutions.

Radhakrishnan said ISRO had built two SARs in the past but these had been flown on aircraft.

CHENNAI: The Indian rocket that will carry the 1,850 kg indigenous surveillance satellite - Radar Imaging Satellite (Risat-1) - to the skies this month will be controlled by the new mission control centre at Sriharikota, said a senior official of Indian space agency ISRO.

"The second mission control centre was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil this January. The forthcoming rocket launch would be controlled and monitored from the new mission control centre. The rocket will fly off the first launch pad," S Satish, director (Publications and Public Relations), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said.

ISRO has its rocket port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh around 80 km from here.

A senior ISRO official not wanting to be named said: "The new mission control centre is modern and has larger area to accommodate more space scientists, officials, VIPs and others."

ISRO officials said that the rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) carrying remote sensing satellite Risat-1 is slated for launch from April 25-30.

"The exact launch date depends on the readiness of the rocket and satellite systems. Normally it will take 12-14 days for the rocket launch after carrying out all the tests," an ISRO official said.

ISRO officials said that Risat-1 systems are being checked at Sriharikota and it will be mated with the rocket later.

Once the satellite is loaded on to the rocket, the entire rocket systems would again be tested.

The PSLV rocket is in a fully assembled condition and is waiting for Risat-1, the heaviest microwave remote sensing satellite to be built by India. The satellite has all weather, day and night imaging capability.

The satellite would be used for disaster prediction and agriculture forestry, and the high resolution pictures and microwave imaging could also be used for defence purposes.

The satellite's synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can acquire data at C-band. In 2009, ISRO had launched 300 kg Risat-2 with Israeli built SAR enabling earth observation in all weather, day and night conditions.

Remote sensing satellites send back pictures and other data for use. India has the largest constellation of remote sensing satellites in the world providing imagery in a variety of spatial resolutions, from more than a metre ranging up to 500 metres, and is a major player in vending such data in the global market.

According to ISRO officials, the rocket that would sling Risat-1 would be PSLV's upgraded variant called PSLV-XL.

The rocket would weigh around 320 tonnes at lift-off and would be the third such expendable rocket to be sent up by ISRO.

Things are getting set for the launch of India's Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) from the spaceport at Sriharikota at 5.45 a.m. on Thursday. The four stages of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) have been stacked up at the first launch-pad built on the beachside on the Sriharikota island and the satellite is married up with the vehicle. The 71-hour countdown for the lift-off will begin at 6.45 a.m. on Monday. The RISAT-1 is essentially a remote-sensing satellite.

The RISAT-1, which has been ten years in the making, will be the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) first radar-imaging satellite. An ISRO satellite specialist said: "Radar imaging is a very complex technology. It is technologically challenging to build such a satellite." RISATs use synthetic aperture radars and the great advantage of RISATs is that they can take pictures of the earth at all times, through rain, sun, clouds, fog and cyclones.

According to ISRO spokesman S. Satish, "This is not only the first radar imaging satellite to be built by India but this is the heaviest remote-sensing satellite built by the ISRO. Besides, it is the heaviest satellite to be put in orbit by the PSLV. RISAT-1 weighs 1858 kg." A powerful PSLV-XL is being used to put RISAT-1 in polar orbit at an altitude of 480 km. The satellite's propulsion system will then be used to take it to the final orbit at an altitude of 536 km, Mr. Satish said.

The rocket is called PSLV-XL (XL stands for extra-large) because it uses six more powerful strap-on motors than those used in the standard PSLV version. If the normal PSLV version's six strap-on motors each use nine tonnes of solid propellants, each of them in the PSLV-XL use 12 tonnes of propellants. This is the third time the ISRO is using a PSLV-XL version. It was first used in October 2008 to put Chandrayaan-1 in orbit and again in July 2011 to during the GSAT-12 launch.

Mr. Satish said pictures from RISAT-1 would be used to estimate the crop yield — especially to monitor paddy crop, assess its acreage and predict its health during the kharif season, when the sky is covered with clouds. The satellite's images can be used for disaster management during cyclones and floods, to assess how much area has been inundated and so on. RISAT-1's life-span is five years.

M. Annadurai is the Programme Director for RISAT-1. N. Valarmathi is its Project Director.

ISRO scientists said that unlike the normal, optical remote-sensing satellites, the RISATs use a synthetic aperture radar (SAR). This radar emits waves in a special way and collects part of the reflected radiation. From this reflected radiation, images of the earth can be built and these images have excellent clarity. Since it is difficult to carry a radar/antenna with a big aperture on a satellite, an SAR is used because it can synthesise (that is, artificially create) a larger aperture electronically. Hence it is called a synthetic aperture radar.

Although this is the first time the ISRO is launching its own RISAT, it has twice launched Israel's RISATs in orbit using the PSLVs from Sriharikota. The ISRO first put Israel's RISAT, Tecsar, in orbit in January, 2008, and the agency deployed Israel's RISAT-2 in orbit in April 2009. Both Tecsar and RISAT-2 are reconnaissance/surveillance satellites. While Israel uses the images from Tecsar, India uses the images from RISAT-2 for surveillance.

Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) successfully placed in its final orbit
The Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1), launched by PSLV-C19 on April 26, 2012, has now been placed in its final Polar Sun-synchronous Orbit of 536 km height.

It may be recalled that PSLV-C19 had placed RISAT-1 in a polar orbit of 470 km X 480 km. As planned, on April 27-28, 2012, the satellite propulsion system was used in four orbital maneuvers to raise height of the orbit of RISAT-1 to 536 km. The satellite is now in its final orbital configuration and in good health. In the coming days, various elements of the C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar will be tested and calibrated as a prelude to payload operations.

As compared to the optical remote sensing satellites that depend upon sunlight, the Synthetic Aperture Radar of RISAT-1 transmits its own radar pulses (at 5.35 GHz) to study the objects on Earth. This facilitates

   1. cloud penetration and
   2. imaging even without sunlight.

For RISAT-1, imaging sessions around both 6 AM and 6 PM have been chosen.

Isro's RISAT 1 satellite has Amdavadi heart
AHMEDABAD: There is a lot more of Ahmedabad in India's latest satellite orbiting the earth than originally thought. Space Application Centre (SAC) of Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) of course designs payloads for satellites, but this time a Gandhinagar-based company has built the very heart of RISAT-1, launched last month from Sriharikota.

Effectively India's first indigenously built all-weather radar imaging satellite, RISAT-1 uses what is known as the synthetic aperture antenna, which has been designed and built by Sahajanand Laser Technology Limited (SLTL). The antenna captures images of earth using microwave. All previous satellites banked on optical and spectral sensors to capture images, which became ineffective at night and on cloudy days. The latest technology, however, captures images in all weather and light conditions.

"We chose not to make any profit out of this project as it is meant for the country," says Arvind Patel, managing director of SLTL. "The synthetic aperture antenna would have cost the country Rs 10 crore had it been imported from the US or elsewhere. We did it for a tenth of the piece."

Patel had been selected by TOI to give away the Social impact Award to Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VSCSC) in the education category on October 2 last year. Patel credits VSCSC with turning him into an innovator from a depressed 14-year-old who had failed his class VII exams.

In 2006-07, SLTL, a company with a Rs 100 crore turnover, was first given a contract to build an assembly fixer, which assembled the synthetic aperture antenna. The facility was set up at the company's factory in Gandhinagar. Isro later asked the company to build the antenna itself.

"This is a proud moment for India to indigenously design and develop the best technology at the most affordable price," Patel added. "This successful implementation will boost the morale for future partnerships between Isro and private technology companies."

RISAT-1 will have a number of uses, including crop estimation, climate estimation and advance warning systems for earthquakes and tsunamis.

No more delay in crop yield forecast after RISAT-1 launch
AHMEDABAD: Delay in forecasting of crop yield and acreage in the country can be avoided after the recent launch of Radar Imaging Satellite 1 (RISAT-1) by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The satellite for which the main payload was designed by ISRO's Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad was set in its final polar orbit on April 27. The satellite began taking images of the earth's surface from May 1.

An early estimation of the agricultural output for the year, before the arrival of the harvest season, helps the country in better planning and management of its economy. Earlier, these forecasting were done by analyzing data purchased from American satellites. However, due to the long procedure involved in the purchase, procuring such data would get delayed which further led to a delay in forecasting.

"Such data were purchased at various intervals of time.

The cost of purchasing such data amounted to around Rs 2 to 2.5 crore, a year. Other than the high cost, the other issue was also the delay in getting the data. A long process is involved in purchasing the data as it need clearance at various levels. Such a delay can be avoided now and we will be able to forecast well in advance," said SAC director A S Kiran Kumar.

The country's first of its kind satellite which uses microwaves will be able to capture earth images in any type of weather. As these microwaves can penetrate clouds, images of the earth could also be captured during the monsoon seasons as well.

Kumar also said that, because of the high cost, such data could not be very frequency. "With a satellite of our own we will be able to freely get the data as and when required. The satellite can cover the entire country in 25 days."

The satellite will also help scientists to calculate the areas affected during flood, surface change during earthquakes, tracking cyclones, glacier studies, estimating soil moistures of various places and so on.

"The analysis and estimation of these data used to be done by scientists at SAC. We have now trained various departments for the same purpose. For example, forecasting for fishing will be done by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad. The analysis for acreage and crop yield forecasting will be done by departments related to agriculture," said Kumar.
