На юге Сахалина ещё забавнее: бывшая ВПП используется под склад труб для нефтепровода, чтобы супостатский хозяин из космоса мог трубы пересчитать и убедиться, что уворовали пока не всё.

Самым большим кратером на Земле является кратер Вредефорт. Диаметр картера составляет 250—300 км, что делает его крупнейшим на планете (не считая неизученного вероятного кратера Земли Уилкса диаметром 500 км в Антарктиде). Кратер Вредефорт расположен в 120 км от Йоханнесбурга, ЮАР.

на предыдущем снимке североамериканский континент кажется слишком большим, занимает больше места на видимом диске чем скажем на глобусе- если смотреть под таким же ракурсом (вот прямо щас открыл google earth и при сравнении сразу бросается в глаза разница в размерах). то же относится и к Египту/Синайскому полуострову на одной из предыдущих страниц.
отчего так? видимо чего-то не знаю :oops:
В стартовом окне Google Earth Вы смотрите на шарик с высоты 11 тыс. км., а фото (точнее, коллаж) получено спутником с расстояния в 700 км. Соответственно, горизонт (край Земли) ближе.

The Sikhote–Alin mountain range in Russia's Far East is pictured in this image from Envisat.
The central portion of this mountain range is on the UNESCO World Heritage List because it contains one the richest and most unusual temperate forests of the world.
In this mixed zone between northern taiga and subtropics, southern species such as the tiger and Himalayan bear coexist with northern species such as the brown bear and lynx.
The area is also important for the survival of many endangered species, such as the Amur tiger.
In the lower-left portion of the image is the snow-covered Khanka Lake, which spans Russia's border with northeast China. With an area of over 4000 sq km, the area around the lake is an important wetland habitat and is the site of nature protection on both sides of the border.
East of the mainland is the Sea of Japan, which appears to have a feathery cloud-cover. This is due to the cold air coming from the mountains and blowing out to sea.
In the upper-right portion of the image is Russia's largest island, Sakhalin. This area is also mountainous.
During the Miocene period – from about five to 23 million years ago – Sakhalin formed part of a continent that comprised north Asia, Alaska and Japan, and enjoyed a comparatively warm climate.
This image was acquired on 27 January by the MERIS instrument on ESA's Envisat satellite.

Космонавты всегда с нетерпением ждут витков Международной космической станции (МКС) через Европу или через Объединенные Арабские Эмираты (ОАЭ), чтобы сделать наиболее красивые фотоснимки Земли из космоса, заявил во вторник журналистам космонавт Роскосмоса Олег Кононенко на пресс-конференции в Звездном городке.
Кононенко вернулся на Землю с МКС 1 июля вместе с астронавтом НАСА Дональдом Петтитом и астронавтом Европейского космического агентства (ЕКА) Андрэ Кауперсом.
"У нас на российском сегменте очень хорошая фотоаппаратура, и можно получать достаточно красивые снимки", - подчеркнул российский космонавт.
По словам Кононенко, во время экспедиции проблем внутри интернационального экипажа МКС не возникало. Космонавты и астронавты помогали друг другу выполнять эксперименты, а в свободное время занимались спортом на силовых тренажерах и фотографировали Землю из космоса. ...

Beyond the scientific information they supply, some Landsat images are simply striking to look at, presenting spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and islands as well as forests, grasslands, and agricultural patterns. By selecting certain features and coloring them from a digital palate, the U.S. Geological Survey has created a series of "Earth as Art" perspectives that demonstrate an artistic resonance in satellite land imagery and provide a special avenue of insight about the geography of each scene.

L2 is at a distance from the Moon of 0.167 times the Earth-Moon distance, meaning about 37 lunar radii. Thus, the angular diameter of the Moon at L2 is about 3.0 degrees, or 6 times larger than on Earth. The Earth is 70 Earth radii from L2, and so is about 1.6 degrees across at L2, or about half the size of the Moon. To have line-of-sight of the whole Earth then, the halo orbit must have minimum distance from L2 of 3100 km, which is pretty close. So, it should be very easy to have an L2 station in full view of Earth.
ПРи Клинтоне его вице-президент Гор лобировал Edusat - спутник в L1, который непрерывно бы снимал Землю, что использовалось бы прежде в образовательских целях.
Такой спутник лучше бы в L2 :)

Rare Clear View of AlaskaOn most days, relentless rivers of clouds wash over Alaska, obscuring most of the state's 6,640 miles (10,690 kilometers) of coastline and 586,000 square miles (1,518,000 square kilometers) of land. The south coast of Alaska even has the dubious distinction of being the cloudiest region of the United States, with some locations averaging more than 340 cloudy days per year.
That was certainly not the case on June 17, 2013, the date that the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this rare, nearly cloud-free view of the state. The absence of clouds exposed a striking tapestry of water, ice, land, forests, and even wildfires.

Snow-covered mountains such as the Alaska Range and Chugach Mountains were visible in southern Alaska, while the arc of mountains that make up the Brooks Range dominated the northern part of the state. The Yukon River -- the longest in Alaska and the third longest in the United States -- wound its way through the green boreal forests that inhabit the interior of the state. Plumes of sediment and glacial dust poured into the Gulf of Alaska from the Copper River. And Iliamna Lake, the largest in Alaska, was ice free.
The same ridge of high pressure that cleared Alaska's skies also brought stifling temperatures to many areas accustomed to chilly June days. Talkeetna, a town about 100 miles north of Anchorage, saw temperatures reach 96°F (36°C) on June 17. Other towns in southern Alaska set all-time record highs, including Cordova, Valez, and Seward. The high temperatures also helped fuel wildfires and hastened the breakup of sea ice in the Chukchi Sea.
