The cryogenic core stage for Arianespace's second Ariane 5 launch of 2010 is prepared for its erection (photo at left). This was followed by the rollout of its two solid boosters, which are mated to the core stage to form the launcher's primary propulsion system for liftoff and ascent.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace's second dual-payload flight of 2010 has begun its assembly as the Spaceport in French Guiana is once again the center of activity for two parallel missions.

This latest Ariane 5 began taking shape earlier in the week as its cryogenic core stage was positioned over a mobile launch table in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building.  It was then joined by the vehicle's two solid boosters for mating.

The second mission of 2010 will utilize a heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA version of Arianespace's workhorse launcher, and will carry two telecommunications satellites.

As the launch campaign begins for this flight, another Ariane 5 ECA is in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, where it is awaiting the integration of its two satellite passengers: ASTRA 3B & COMSATBw-2.  The liftoff of this year-opening Arianespace launch is set for March 24.

Arianespace is targeting a total of seven Ariane 5 missions during 2010 while preparations also continue for the upcoming introductions of the medium-lift Soyuz and lightweight Vega launcher in side-by-side operations at the Spaceport.

Arianespace's mission pace for its heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA is supported by a high level of activity at the Spaceport in French Guiana, where the second launch vehicle for 2010 has now completed its initial build-up.

During activity in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, the heavy-lift Ariane 5 was fitted with its ESC-A upper stage and the vehicle equipment bay – which were installed as a single unit. This combined integration step is part of the streamlining introduced in Ariane 5's build-up process to optimize the preparation workflow and support Arianespace's flight rate.

(In the top photo, at right, the combined ESC-A upper stage and vehicle equipment bay are raised inside the Launcher Integration Building for installation on Ariane 5, which is partly visible in the background.  In the lower photo, this combined component is lowered into position atop the Ariane 5's cryogenic core stage.)

Once additional integration and checkout steps are completed, the Ariane 5 will be ready for its transfer from the Launcher Integration Building to the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building, where it will be fitted with the mission's dual-satellite payload.

The passengers for this upcoming flight – designated V195, for the 195th mission of an Ariane family vehicle – will be the Arabsat 5A and COMS satellites.

Arabsat 5A is the initial fifth-generation spacecraft for Arabsat, which is one of the Arab world's leading satellite services providers.  This relay platform is designed to handle a full range of satellite communications services over sub-Saharan Africa, the North Africa and Middle East (MENA) region, and beyond.

COMS is a multi-mission satellite for the Korea Aerospace and Research Institute of South Korea, and carries payloads for meteorology, ocean observation and communications.  

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 with COMS and Arabsat 5A is targeted for late April.  This will follow the March 24 launch of Arianespace's first Ariane 5 ECA of 2010, which currently is in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building awaiting the integration of its ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2 satellite payloads.

Arianespace is planning a total of seven Ariane 5 missions this year.

The Arabsat 5A communications satellite is unloaded after its transport to Rochambeau International Airport, located near French Guiana's capital city of Cayenne.

The initial passenger for Arianespace's second Ariane 5 mission of this year is now in French Guiana following a trans-Atlantic flight from Europe earlier this week.

Arabsat 5A arrived at Rochambeau International Airport aboard an Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft, delivered from the Toulouse, France facilities of EADS Astrium – which built this communications satellite jointly with Thales Alenia Space as co-prime contractors.

Astrium supplied the Eurostar E3000 satellite bus on which Arabsat 5A is based, and also was responsible for its assembly and testing. The spacecraft's communications payload – which features 26 C-band and 24 Ku-band transponders – was provided by Thales Alenia Space. It will weigh 4,800 kg. at launch, and is designed for a nominal lifetime of 15 years.

Arabsat 5A is the initial fifth-generation spacecraft for Arabsat, one of the Arab world's leading satellite services providers. To be located at an orbital position of 30.5 deg. East, it will provide additional capacity for a full range of satellite communications services over sub-Saharan Africa, the North Africa and Middle East (MENA) region, and beyond.

For the upcoming Ariane 5 launch, Arabsat 5A will be joined by COMS – an Astrium-built multi-mission satellite for the Korea Aerospace and Research Institute of South Korea, which carries payloads for meteorology, ocean observation and communications.

This second flight of Arianespace's heavy-lift workhorse in 2010 is targeted for late April, and will follow the March 24 launch of ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2 by an Ariane 5 ECA.

COMS is fitted with payloads for meteorology applications, ocean observation and telecommunications, which will be operated from the South Korean satellite's geostationary orbital position.

The two satellites for Arianespace's second Ariane 5 flight of 2010 have begun their checkout at the Spaceport – which currently is hosting two parallel missions for the industry's workhorse launch vehicle.

Both Arabsat-5A and COMS are now undergoing processing in the Spaceport's S5 preparation facility following their deliveries to French Guiana this month.  

COMS is a South Korean multi-mission spacecraft developed by EADS Astrium and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).  It has the distinction of being the first European-built 3-axis stabilized geostationary observation satellite that carries payloads dedicated to meteorology applications, ocean monitoring and telecommunications.

For its weather mission, COMS' meteorology imager will perform continuous observations of world scale meteorological phenomena from geostationary orbit, along with the monitoring of specific local weather events such as hurricanes, monsoons and sandstorms.  

The COMS satellite's oceanography duties are to be handled by a multi-band ocean color imager – which will be utilized in particular by the fishing industry to track marine ecosystem changes.  In the telecommunications function, an experimental Ka-band module developed by the South Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) will help validate wide-band multi-media telecommunications services.

Arabsat-5A's relay duties will range from television backhauling and broadcasting, telephony, business communications to Internet trunking and the provision of VSAT and other interactive services.

COMS will be accompanied on the Ariane 5 mission by Arabsat-5A – the first in a series of fifth-generation satellites for Arabsat, which is one of the Arab world's leading satellite services providers. This spacecraft was built by an industrial team of Astrium and Thales Alenia Space acting as co-prime contractors, and will provide additional capacity at Arabsat's 30.5 deg. East orbital position.

The Arabsat-5A platform is designed to provide a large range of satellite communications services, including television backhauling and broadcasting, telephony, business communications, Internet trunking and the provision of VSAT and other interactive services over sub-Saharan Africa, the North-Africa and Middle East (MENA) region, and beyond.

Arianespace's mission with Arabsat-5A and COMS is planned for late April using a heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA.  It will follow the March 24 launch of another dual-payload Ariane 5 ECA – carrying the ASTRA 3B telecommunications satellite for SES ASTRA and the COMSATBw-2 secure relay platform for the German Bundeswehr (armed forces) – which is entering the final preparation phase at the Spaceport.

Власти Южной Кореи сегодня сообщили о том, что в июне этого года страна произведет запуск собственного телекоммуникационно-метеорологического спутника. Новый аппарат должен будет заняться прогнозированием морской погоды, а также обеспечивать беспроводную связь по всей стране.

В Министерстве образования, науки и технологий говорят, что запуск будет произведен при помощи Европейского космического агентства, французской авиационно-космической компании Astrium и Корейским аэрокосмическим исследовательским институтом. Старт ракеты-носителя со спутником на борту должен будет пройти 24 июня с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане.

Изначально новый корейский спутник Chollian планировалось запустить еще в марте, но в конструкции ракеты-носителя были обнаружены инженерные проблемы, на устранение которых потребовались недели. Сейчас в Astrium говорят, что значительная часть проблем устранена и ракету в собранном состоянии необходимо протестировать.

Когда Chollian окажется на геостационарной орбите высотой 36 000 км, то при помощи своих мультисенсорных камер он сможет прогнозировать цунами в океане, исследовать температуру воды в океане и собирать данные о составе и строении атмосферы и облаков.

В Корее говорят, что создание нового аппарата обошлось стране в 350 млрд вон или 293 млн долларов. "Новый аппарат позволит быстрее и точнее собирать метеорологические данные об атмосфере и океане около Корейского полуострова. Также спутник может функционировать как обычный коммуникационный аппарат. Срок работы аппарата составляет 7 лет", - сообщили в Корейском аэрокосмическом институте.

Arianespace has taken delivery of the Ariane 5 launcher for its next mission, which will orbit a dual-passenger payload in a liftoff scheduled on June 23.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA was transferred from the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building in French Guiana to the Final Assembly Building, where it will be fitted with the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellites.

This transfer marked Ariane 5's official handover from industrial prime contractor EADS Astrium – which was responsible for the vehicle's build-up – to Arianespace, which manages the payload integration, countdown preparations and launch.

COMS is a South Korean multi-mission spacecraft that will perform telecommunications duties along with meteorology and ocean monitoring.  It was developed by EADS Astrium and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

The next Ariane 5 flight has been given the go-ahead for its Wednesday liftoff following today's launch readiness review held at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

This milestone, which occurs before every Ariane 5 flight, clears the way for tomorrow's rollout of the heavy-lift vehicle with the Arabsat-5A and COMS spacecraft, followed by an evening launch from French Guiana on June 23.

The review confirmed the readiness of Ariane 5 and its two satellite passengers, along with the Spaceport's launch infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

Ariane 5's payload lift performance for this second Arianespace mission of 2010 is approximately 8,390 kg. to geostationary transfer orbit, which includes a combined mass of 7,315 kg. for the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellites, plus the launcher's SYLDA 5 dual-payload dispenser system and associated integration hardware.

Arabsat-5A was built by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space on a turnkey contract for the Arabsat telecommunications operator, and is to operate at an orbital location of 30.5° East.  It will be the seventh Arabsat satellite lofted by the Ariane family of launch vehicles since the orbiting of Arabsat 1A in 1985.

The spacecraft is based on Astrium's Eurostar 3000 platform, and its Thales Alenia Space-supplied payload has 24 Ku-band transponders and 28 C-band transponders.  Arabsat-5A will provide telecommunications and TV broadcasting services over the Middle East and Africa.

South Korea's COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is fitted with three payloads for meteorological observation, ocean surveillance and experimental broadband multimedia communications services.  Developed by program prime contractor Astrium based on the Eurostar 3000 platform, COMS is fitted with its multi-mission payload supplied by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute.

In the Ariane 5's dual-payload "stack," Arabsat-5A is riding in the upper passenger position and will be released first during the mission's deployment sequence.  COMS is installed in the lower slot, housed inside the SYLDA 5 dispenser, and is timed for separation at just over 32 min. into the flight.  (See the drawing, above).

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 is planned during a launch window that opens at 6:41 p.m. local time on June 23 at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

The 51st Ariane 5 has rolled out to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport, clearing the way for tomorrow evening's liftoff with a dual-passenger payload of the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellites.

Emerging under cloudy French Guiana skies at 10:30 a.m. local time today, the heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA was transferred during a one-hour process from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building to the launch zone, where it was locked in place.

With the transfer now completed, the final countdown will start for Ariane 5's June 23 liftoff at the start of a launch window that opens at 6:41 p.m. in French Guiana and continues until 7:45 p.m.

This will be the second Ariane 5 flight of 2010, and its payload lift performance to geostationary transfer orbit is approximately 8,390 kg. – which includes a combined mass of 7,315 kg. for the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellites, plus the launcher's SYLDA 5 dual-payload dispenser system and associated integration hardware.

To be released first during the mission's deployment sequence will be Arabsat-5A, which was built by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space on a turnkey contract for the Arabsat telecommunications operator.  The satellite has a mass at liftoff of about 4,940 kg., carrying 24 Ku-band transponders and 28 C-band transponders for telecommunications and TV broadcasting services over the Middle East and Africa.

The COMS satellite passenger will be separated at just over 32 min. into the flight to complete this mission – which will be the 195th flight of an Ariane family launch vehicle.  COMS is a multi-purpose spacecraft for South Korea, fitted with three payloads for meteorological observation, ocean surveillance and experimental broadband multimedia communications services.  It has a liftoff mass of 2,460 kg., and was built by Astrium as prime contractor. The payload was supplied by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute.

Activities began with this morning's electrical systems checkout for the heavy-lift launch vehicle, and are being followed by the fueling of Ariane 5's cryogenic main stage and upper stage.

After being orbited by Arianespace, Arabsat-5A will be utilized by the Arabsat telecommunications operator for telecommunications and TV broadcasting services over the Middle East and Africa.  COMS is a satellite for the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), which is to perform meteorological observations, ocean surveillance and experimental broadband multimedia communications services.

Due to a launch vehicle pressurization anomaly on the main cryogenic stage during final countdown operations for Flight 195, Arianespace has decided to postpone the launch.

The launch vehicle and its Arabsat-5A and COMS satellite payloads have been placed in stand-by mode and maintained in fully safe conditions.

A new date for the mission will be announced as soon as possible.

Первый раз эту фразу услышал от Поповкина: "Лучше поиметь проблемы на земле, чем в полете"
Случай с КСЛВ (пошли на пуск сразу после помывки ракеты) очередной раз доказывает это.
Лучше перестраховаться и дать отбой.

ПАРИЖ, 25 июня. /ИТАР-ТАСС/. Запуск с космодрома Куру /Французская Гвиана/ европейской ракеты-носителя "Ариан-5" с двумя спутниками на борту вновь отложен. Об этом сообщил сегодня представитель корпорации "Арианспейс", ответственной за коммерческие запуски с этого космодрома.

Отмену запуска в ночь со среды на четверг корпорация объяснила техническими причинами, в частности "проблемой герметизации на уровне основной, первой ступени" ракеты. Минувшей ночью обратный счет пришлось прерывать два раза. Первый раз за 17 секунд до старта, второй раз - за 16 секунд. В ночь со среды на четверг запуск был отложен "из-за резкого понижения давления, но только в верхней ступени носителя", объяснил представитель.

Он не сообщил возможной даты следующей попытки запуска ракеты.

In the two synchronized sequences performed during the launch countdown on Thursday, June 24, an atypical pressure value was observed in the pressurization system of Ariane 5's cryogenic main stage.  After precise analysis of this phenomenon, and complementary checks were carried out, Arianespace has decided to resume final countdown operations for Flight 195 with the Arabsat-5A and COMS satellite payloads.

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 launcher is now set for the night of Saturday, June 26, as early as possible in the following launch window:
From 6:41 p.m. to 7:52 p.m., local time in Kourou, French Guiana
From 5:41 p.m. to 6:52 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
From 9:41 p.m. to 10:52 p.m. UTC.

51st Ariane 5 launch, 37th success in a row

This latest successful launch of Ariane 5, the second in 2010, once again proves the launcher's operational capabilities. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads and handling a complete range of missions, from commercial launches into geostationary orbit to scientific satellites boosted into special orbits.

The 51st launch of an Ariane 5, and the 37th successful mission in a row, clearly confirms the launcher's reliability and availability. Arianespace's launch Service & Solutions continue to set the global standard and guarantee independent access to space for all customers, including national and international space agencies, private firms and governments.

Two loyal customers

Arianespace and Arabsat have developed close ties over the 25 years since the launch of Arabsat 1A in 1985. Arabsat 5A is the seventh Arabsat satellite to have chosen the European launcher.

The launch of South Korea's COMS satellite continues a partnership that started nearly 20 years ago with the launch of Kitsat scientific microsats for SaTRec, Satellite Technology Research Center, and continued with the launch of the Koreasat-3 communications satellite for the operator Korea Telecom.

 Arabsat-5A/COMS mission at a glance

The mission was carried out by an Ariane 5 ECA launcher from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Liftoff was on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 6:41 pm local time in Kourou (5:41 p.m. in Washington, D.C., 21:41 UTC, 11:41 p.m. in Paris and on Sunday, June 27, at 12:41 a.m. in Riyadh, 6:41 a.m. in Seoul).

Arabsat-5A weighed 4,939 kg. at launch. It was built by Astrium and Thales Alenia Space within the scope of a turnkey contract with satcom operator Arabsat, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Astrium provided the Eurostar E3000 platform and was responsible for satellite integration, while Thales Alenia Space supplied the payload. Arabsat-5A will provide telecommunications and TV broadcasting services in the Middle East and North Africa. Positioned at 30.5 degrees East, it has a design life exceeding 15 years.

COMS, the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite, weighed 2,460 kg. at launch and is fitted with three payloads. In addition to its meteorological observation and ocean surveillance missions, its orbital position over the Korean peninsula will enable it to provide broadband multimedia communications services. Program prime contractor Astrium built COMS under co-operative efforts with Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) using a Eurostar E3000 platform, fitted with a meteorological imaging system and an ocean observation payload. The Ka-Band telecommunication payload was developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea and was supplied by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

SEOUL, June 27 (Yonhap) -- The launch of South Korea's Chollian satellite marks a major leap forward for the country's space development program, a state-run aerospace agency said Sunday.

   The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in charge of the country's rocket and satellite projects said the liftoff of the communication, ocean and meteorological satellite (COMS) from the Guiana Space Center in South America represents a milestone in the country's "catch-up effort" with established leaders in this cutting technology field.

   The Daejeon-based institute, located 160 kilometers south of Seoul, said the satellite makes South Korea the first country in the world to operate an oceanographic observation satellite in geostationary orbit that can simultaneously provide weather-related information and communications services around the clock.

   The Chollian, which took eight years to build and will circle the globe at an altitude of around 36,000 kilometers, also makes the country the seventh in the world to operate an independent weather satellite after the United States, the European Union, Japan, China, India and Russia.

   "The COMS highlights what the country has achieved in the satellite field in the past two decades," KARI said. It pointed out that because the country sent up its first "Uribyol" or Korean Institute of Technology Satellite (KITSAT) in August 11, 1992, it entered the satellite race 40 years behind forerunners in this sector.

   Since the KITSAT launch program, which included two other machines, the country placed a total of 12 satellites -- including the Chollian -- into the Earth's orbit. These include four Mugunghwa or Koreasat telecommunication satellites operated by the private sector; two multipurpose Arirang satellites equipped with advanced, high resolution cameras; and a single Science and Technology Satellite-1 (STSAT-1) into space in 2003.

   SK Telecom Co., a local telecommunications service provider, had also placed the world's first digital multimedia broadcasting satellite called the "Hanbyul" in orbit in 2004 along in cooperation with Japanese partner Mobile Broadcasting Corp.

   "At present the country's satellite technology level and knowhow is around 70-80 percent of 'early starters' like the U.S. and Russia but it is reducing the gap," the space agency claimed.

   It said that at the current pace, the country should reach levels roughly on a par with some satellite technology leaders before 2030.

   KARI said that even if the Naro-1 rocket carrying the STSAT-2 was lost during liftoff, the country is in the process of developing or deploying at least four other satellites in the next few years to replace and augment four in operation. The Naro-1 also called the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 was the country's first locally assembled space rocket built with extensive support from Russia.

   Two satellites are to blast off in the second half of this year, including the Arirang 5, which will have a radar imaging device that can detect developments on the Earth's surface at night and in bad weather.

   The agency under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said that the ultimate goal is to develop comprehensive technologies to launch all of its satellites without relying on foreign rockets and launch pads.

   The country recently built the Naro Space Center off the country's southern coast to spur its space program.

   Seoul, meanwhile, is engaged in a space program that calls for the building of a 300-ton thrust rocket capable of carrying a 1.5 ton satellite into orbit by 2020 and to place a probe around the Moon five years later.

В Министерстве образования, науки и технологий Южной Кореи сегодня объявили о том, что первый корейский геостационарный метеоспутник успешно введен в эксплуатацию и работает штатно. В космос этот аппарат был запущен в июне с космодрома Куру во Французской Гвиане.

Аппарат весом 2460 кг представляет собой первый в мире геостационарный спутник для наблюдения за погодой в океане и мониторинга состояния воды. Сообщается, что данные с этого спутника позволят стране получать максимально точные и актуальные данные о перемещении водных масс, циклонах, температурах воды и воздуха, а также о широкой гамме изменений окружающей среды.

В Южной Корее говорят, что запуск данного аппарата делает Южную Корею 10-й страной в мире, способной полностью самостоятельно производить современные космические спутники. Сейчас новый аппарат находится на высоте 37 000 км строго над территорией Южной Кореи и период его вращения совпадает с периодом вращения Земли.

"Сейчас аппарат занимается тонкой подстрокой собственной орбиты и проводит пробные сеансы передачи данных", - говорят в подразделении развития космических программ. На данный момент спутник работает без ошибок, а его обслуживание проводится совместно с французским авиа-космическим концерном EADS Astrium.

Аппарат сконструирован таким образом, чтобы передавать океанографические данные каждые 15 минут, а в случае чрезвычайных ситуаций этот интервал можно сокращать до 8 минут. До недавнего времени Южная Корея получала каждые 30 минут метеорологические данные от Японии и каждые несколько часов от США.

Работать новый спутник должен семь лет, а в его создание было инвестировано около 288 млн долларов.

Очнувшись после очередного коматоза, NORAD выдало наборы на оба спутника: COMS уже на стационаре, Arabsat (признанный арабским, в отличие от своего собрата 5B) двое суток назад был ещё на исходной ГПО. Почему, не ясно.
